The YLC is celebrating another successful year of dynamic programming for exceptional high school students—the leaders of tomorrow! On September 17, YLC members were inspired by former UT and NFL football player, Cory Redding. Winner of the 2013 ed Block Courage Award and the Indianapolis Colts’ 2012 Man of the Year, his Cory Redding Foundation provides educational opportunities for low-income and at-risk students. On October 22, the YLC was honored to welcome Cecilia Abbott, our cherished First Lady of Texas. She discussed her focus on service, culminating in the creation of her “Texanthropy Initiative” to promote volunteerism. 2018 launched with two remarkable YLC guest presenters. Long-time voice of NewsRadio KLBJ, Ed Clements, spoke of his career in entertainment and his tireless activism on behalf of Alzheimer’s research. Mr. Clements was joined by Beau Armstrong—Chairman, President, and CeO of Stratus Properties, and a nationally-recognized pioneer in environmentally sustainable building and responsible land stewardship. Our final guest for the 2017–18 program series was internationally renowned recording artist Andrew Heller, named the 2015 Breakthrough Artist of the Year by New Music Weekly. Mr. heller is also a former IBM Fellow and president of IBM’s Business Unit. On April 14, the members of the Youth Leadership Council will be recognized at a special pre-concert reception for their participation in a year of tremendous personal growth and community service. One outstanding senior YLC leader will be awarded the $500 Book Scholarship Award. Membership is open to all Austin area high school students in 9th–12th grades. Please visit www.wslaustin.org for more information.

31305 PAPI PROGRAM 13 4_6_2018 nOTes On The prOgram Michael Torke (b. 1961) Bright Blue music composed 1985 (approx. 9 minutes) michael Torke’s music has been called some of the most optimistic, joyful and thoroughly uplifting music to appear in recent years. he has written works in virtually every genre, combining a restless rhythmic energy with melodic lyricism. Torke graduated in composition and piano from the eastman school of music in 1984, and pursued further studies in composition at the yale school of music in 1984–85. he has a benign neurological condition called synesthesia that causes people to automatically and unconsciously associate images from one of the senses to those of another; many people, for example, associate colors with numbers, tones or odors, letters of the alphabet or days of the week. when Torke hears or thinks of music, he sees vivid colors or other images. as a result, many of his compositions have titles that include color names. his first orchestral work, ecstatic orange, was commissioned by ascap and the “meet the composer” program. it was premiered by lukas foss and the Brooklyn philharmonic in 1985. Torke composed Bright Blue music in 1985. like many other Torke titles, it is partially a product of his synesthesia. The composer writes: “inspired by wittgenstein’s idea that meaning is not in words themselves but in the grammar of words used, i conceived of a parallel in musical terms: harmonies in themselves do not contain any meaning, rather, musical meaning results only in the way harmonies are used… if the choice of harmony is arbitrary, why not then use tonic and dominant chords—the simplest, most direct, and—for me—the most pleasurable? Once this decision was made and put in the back of my mind, an unexpected freedom of expression followed… The feeling of working was exuberant; i would leave my outdoor studio, and the trees and bushes

seemed to dance, and the sky seemed a bright blue. “That bright blue color contributed to the piece’s title, but in conjunction with another personal association. The key of the piece, D-major… has been the color blue for me since i was five years old. Bright Blue music continues the compositional development of my past two pieces, but does so with a newfound freedom and lyricism, and a new language: tonality.” Bright Blue music recalls the joie de vivre of a Johann strauss waltz, a factor that may be related to wittgenstein’s nationality. ludwig Josef Johann wittgenstein (1889–1951) was an austrian philosopher who worked in many areas, including the philosophy of language. he is generally regarded as one of the twentieth century’s most important philosophers. Leonard Bernstein (1918 –1990) Serenade (after plato’s symposium) for solo violin, strings, harp, and percussion composed 1954 (approx. 30 minutes) all his life, leonard Bernstein vacillated between the two sides of his musical personality, producing such popular musical fare as Candide, Fancy Free, and West Side Story on the one hand, and the mass, the three symphonies and the Serenade on the other. composed in 1954 on a grant from the Koussevitzky foundation, Bernstein’s Serenade could be called a five-movement violin concerto in all but name. according to the composer the inspiration came from a reading of plato’s dialogue, Symposium. Download the app: Connect: Bernstein wrote: “The music, like the dialogue, is a series of related statements in praise of love, and generally follows the platonic Download the app: Connect: form through the succession of speakers at the banquet. for the benefit of those looking for literary allusions, Bernstein gave the following guideposts to the five movements, but one should not think of each movement as a musical portrait of the speaker nor a description of his spin on the topic. “phaedrus; pausanias (lento; Allegro). phaedrus opens the symposium with a lyrical oration in praise of eros... pausanias continues by describing the duality of lover and beloved.” The movement opens with an intensely romantic solo for the violin, an introduction to the dance- like allegro that recasts the theme in a more playful vein. “aristophanes (Allegretto). aristophanes does not play the role of clown in this dialogue, but, instead, that of the bedtime story teller invoking the fairy-tale mythology of love.” The movement takes off on the energy of the preceding allegro but is lightly textured. “erixymachus (presto). The physician speaks of bodily harmony as a scientific model for the workings of love- patterns. This is an extremely short fugato scherzo, born of a blend of mystery and humor.” “agathon (Adagio). perhaps the most moving speech of the dialogue. agathon’s panegyric embraces all aspects of love’s power, charms and functions. This movement is a simple three-part song.” This movement recalls the romanticism of the introduction with the violin in a dialogue with the orchestra. “socrates; alcibiades (molto tenuto; Allegro molto vivace ). socrates describes his visit to the seer Diotima, quoting her speech on the demonology of love... The famous interruption by alcibiades and his band of drunken revelers ushers in the allegro which is an extended rondo ranging in spirit from agitation through jig-like dance music to joyful celebration.” The first part of the movement has a dark, melancholy cast. The writing is more chromatic in both orchestra and solo violin setting up the abrupt change in mood. The allegro is suffused with a jazzy energy, almost a contest of wills between the orchestra and the romantic violin. although the soloist is soon caught up in the spirited dance, he

seems determined to steer the discussion back on course with brief phrases of the first movement theme. in the final moments of the piece, however, the whole orchestra transforms the violin’s statement, redefining and energizing it until it gets swept away in the festivities. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) symphony no. 5 in c minor, Op. 67 composed 1808 (approx. 31 minutes) The four most clichéd notes in classical music were once the most revolutionary. for the first time a rhythm, rather than a melody, became the main subject of a symphonic movement—and not merely as a first theme to be stated and picked up again for a while in the development and recapitulation sections. Beethoven wove the rhythm into the entire fabric of the first movement, and subsequently into the rest of the symphony. The motive first appears as a repeated demand, subsequently expanded into a genuine melody in the first theme. it recurs as a throbbing accompaniment in bass and timpani in the second theme, all the way to the final cadence of the exposition. such an original symphonic structure did not come easily, especially to a composer who lacked the ever-ready melodic genius of a mozart, Bach, or haydn, who all produced copiously on demand. a collection of the composer’s sketchbooks bears witness to the lengthy and often painful gestation of some of his greatest music. The fifth symphony took four years to complete, between 1804 and 1808. But Beethoven also had to eat, and during those four years he also produced the fourth symphony, the fourth piano concerto, the three string Quartets, Op. 59, the mass in c major and the violin concerto. although Beethoven had already been at work on what was to become the fifth symphony, he composed the fourth in fairly short order in 1806 on commission from

31305 PAPI PROGRAM 15 4_6_2018 nOTes On The prOgram count franz von Oppersdorff. The count eventually paid the 500 florins agreed upon for the work and in 1807 commissioned another symphony with a down payment of 200 florins. Beethoven notified Oppersdorff in march 1808 that the fifth symphony was ready and that he should send the remaining 300 florins. But the count sent only another installment of 150 florins, and by november Beethoven, in one of his less than ethical moves, apparently felt justified in selling the score to the publisher gottfried härtel. upon finally paying in full, Oppersdorff received a copy. The symphony no. 5 was premiered at one of those monster public concerts common in the 19th century; on the program were premieres of the sixth symphony (“pastorale”), the fourth piano concerto, the aria, “ah! perfido,” the choral fantasia, and several movements of the mass in c major. One can only imagine the bewilderment of the audience on its first encounter in a single evening with the “pastorale” and the fifth. Because the fifth symphony is now so familiar, it is difficult to think of it as innovative, but it was not only the integration of the four-note rhythmic motif into the entire fabric of the first movement that was new. The second movement, Andante con moto, involves its own kind of novelty. it is made up of two short juxtaposed, contrasting themes: the first in dotted rhythm in the strings, the second a slow, almost military, theme in the brass. Beethoven produces from the two themes a double set of variations. and it should be noted that the second theme contains within it in augmentation (in longer note values) the germinal four-note rhythm of the first movement. for the scherzo, Beethoven again prominently takes up the motivic rhythm in the horns, this time in augmentation. The Trio is a fugue. The repeat of the scherzo theme is scored for clarinet and bassoon over pizzicato strings playing pianissimo. symphony no. 5 has frequently been referred to as a struggle from darkness to light, but it is a commonplace that has

v

The AuSTin SyMphony

palpable grounding in truth. not only does the symphony begin in c minor and end in c major, but there is also the magnificent transition between the third and fourth movements, a kind of sunlight breaking through the clouds with violins stammering over the timpani as it throbs out the motto. The emergence into the triumphant finale paved the way for the symphonic writing of the future, including Beethoven’s own ninth symphony, mendelssohn’s Third (Themass in c major, Op. 86“scottish”), and Brahms’s first. program notes by: Joseph & elizabeth Kahn wordpros@mindspring.com www.wordprosmusic.com

Join us for the 2018-2019 season The season marks new beginnings and continued traditions at Austin Opera.

Verdi's Otello Puts & Campbell's Silent Night Puccini's La bohème 82

512-472-5992 AUSTINOPERA.ORG THE LONG CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS Saturday Nov. 10, 2018 7:30 PM Thursday Nov. 15, 2018 7:30 PM Sunday Nov. 18, 2018 2:30 PM

As a crackling storm rolls into Cyprus, we are introduced to a trio of figures, each based on Shakespeare’s iconic characters: the victorious naval warrior Otello, his faithful wife Desdemona, and his trusted officer Iago. But soon after the rain subsides, the duplicitous Iago preys upon Otello’s insecurity and suspicion by hatching a plot to have Otello question Desdemona’s fidelity, unleashing a passionate tempest of gale force, with powerfully tragic results. This thoughtful tale of personal and political jealousy is a rarely performed masterwork that will leave Austin audiences breathless.

THE LONG CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

This company premiere of the Pulitzer Prize–winning modern classic Silent Night, with music by Kevin Puts and a libretto by Mark Campbell (The Manchurian Candidate, 2016), is based on the 2005 film Joyeux Noël, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Saturday Jan. 26, 2019 7:30 PM Thursday Jan. 31, 2019 7:30 PM Sunday Feb. 3, 2019 2:30 PM

Silent Night recounts a miraculous moment of peace during one of the bloodiest wars in human history. The year is 1914 and as Christmas Eve falls, soldiers in French, German, and Scottish trenches begin recalling songs of home, stepping into no-man’s-land for a spontaneous truce.

THE LONG CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Puccini’s sweeping story of young bohemians struggling to fulfill their dreams and find true love contains some of the most beloved music in all of opera. La bohème is frequently referenced in popular culture—from the Academy Award– winning film Moonstruck to the Tony–winning musical Rent— making the story and its music instantly recognizable to even newcomers to opera.

Saturday April 27, 2019 7:30 PM Thursday May 2, 2019 7:30 PM Sunday May 5, 2019 2:30 PM

Austin Opera audiences will soon discover why the Pulitzer committee hailed Silent Night for “displaying versatility of style and cutting straight to the heart.”

This exquisite production is a traditional telling of the classic tale. The City of Light’s snowy streets, drafty tenements, and nightclub diversions come to life in a production certain to linger in the memory long after its final heartrending scene. 83

Opera ATX, powered by Austin Opera, will bring groundbreaking new works, emerging artists, exciting composers, and dynamic directors to Austin. By tapping into our city’s live music DNA, Austin Opera will continue to reflect the spirit of the city and the pioneering image it’s known for. Opera ATX will explore alternative venues and partnerships around town, starting at the historic Paramount Theatre. We will create the conditions for operatic experiences completely new to Austin, and perhaps completely new to the art form. Driven by Austin Opera’s love of opera, love of audiences, and love of Austin, Opera ATX shows how Austin is shaping its opera company and inspiring innovative experiences.

David T. Little's Soldier Songs PARAMOUNT THEATRE

Friday Saturday Apr. 5, 2019 8:00 PM Apr. 6, 2019 8:00 PM Soldier Songs combines elements of theater, opera, rock-infused concert music, and video by filmmaker Bill Morrison to explore themes of loss, the exploitation of innocence, and the difficulty of expressing the truth of war. The libretto, created by the composer, was adapted from recorded interviews with veterans of five wars. Soldier Songs traces changing perceptions of war in our society and by those who experience it. It is a chilling and realistic view of our media-crazed, war-machine culture, and of the nature of power in war.

A NEW INITIATIVE POWERED BY AUSTIN OPERA

84

With its poignant libretto, driving music, and surprising visual counterpoint, Soldier Songs perfectly represents the promise of Opera ATX: bringing innovative new works, sensational artists, and visionary creative teams to Austin.

A World Apart, A Moment Together One World & TRIAD funds of the San Antonio Area Foundation Connecting Central Texas Military Families One World’s innovative performing arts summer camp program provided scholarships through TRIAD funds of the San Antonio Area Foundation to give kids the opportunity to be a part of the musical production of “Wizard of Oz.” When the campers took the stage every parent, no matter where they were located, including Iraq was able to see their child perform. Using amazing video technology generously provided by a partnership with LifeSize Communications, seven military bases were connected to One World Theatre, so that parent and child could see, talk and interact with each other as if they were in the same room. After the performance, each child and their family was given the opportunity to talk privately with their loved one, keeping the bond of family alive across the miles.
