Stephen Mills, Sarah & Ernest Butler Family Fund Artistic Director Known for his innovative and collaborative choreographic projects, Stephen Mills has works in the repertoires of companies across the United States and around the world. From his inaugural season as Artistic Director in 2000, Mills attracted attention from around the United States with his worldpremiere production of Hamlet, hailed by Dance Magazine as “...sleek and sophisticated.” The Washington Post recognized Ballet Austin as “one of the nation’s best-kept ballet secrets” in 2004 after Ballet Austin performed Mills’ world premiere of The Taming of the Shrew, commissioned by and performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The Company was first invited to perform at the Kennedy Center in January of 2002 with Mills' production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and at The Joyce Theater (NYC) in 2004. In 2005 after two years of extensive research, Mills led a community-wide human rights collaboration that culminated in the world premiere work Light / The Holocaust & Humanity Project. In 2006 Light / The Holocaust & Humanity Project was awarded the Audrey & Raymond Maislin Humanitarian Award by the AntiDefamation League. In September of 2013, the work made its international debut with a tour in three cities across Israel. In October 2016, Mills led his company of dancers through another "first," a 16-city tour of the People's Republic of China, which included performances in China's largest city, Shanghai, an international economic and cultural center. In 1998, Mills was the choreographer chosen to represent the United States through his work, Ashes, at les Rencontres chorégraphiques internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis in Paris. Mills was awarded the Steinberg Award, the top honor at le Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur International Choreographic Competition for One / the body’s grace. Mills has created more than 40 works for companies in the United States and abroad. His ballets are in the repertoires of such companies as Hong Kong Ballet, Ballet Augsburg, American Ballet Theatre Studio Company, Atlanta Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Washington Ballet, Cuballet in Havana, Cuba, BalletMet Columbus, Dayton Ballet, Sarasota Ballet, Ballet Pacifica, Dallas Black Dance Theater, Louisville Ballet, Nashville Ballet, Colorado Ballet, Texas Ballet Theater, The Sacramento Ballet and Dance Kaleidoscope. He has worked in collaboration with such luminaries as the eight-time Grammy Award-winning band, Asleep at the Wheel, Shawn Colvin and internationally renowned flamenco artist José Greco II. As a dancer, Mills performed with a wide variety of companies such as the world-renowned Harkness Ballet and The American Dance Machine under the direction of Lee Theodore. He also performed with the Cincinnati Ballet and The Indianapolis Ballet Theatre before becoming a part of Ballet Austin. Mills has danced principal roles in the Balanchine repertoire, as well as works by Choo-San Goh, John Butler, Ohad Naharin, Vicente Nebrada, Domy Reiter-Soffer and Mark Dendy. In addition to his work as a choreographer, Mills is a master teacher committed to developing dancers. He has been invited as guest faculty at many pre-professional academies including Jacob’s Pillow, Goucher College, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts in Dallas, The Virginia School of the Arts, The New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, Stephens College and Point Park University in Pittsburgh. Mills is a member of the national dance service organization Dance/USA and has served both in leadership roles and on the board of trustees for the organization. In 2013, Mills was a participant in the Chief Executive Program of National Arts Strategies.

Cookie Gregory Ruiz, C.F.R.E., Executive Director Cookie Gregory Ruiz has more than 30 years of experience in the areas of strategic planning, organizational development, and nonprofit fund-raising/ management. Since 2002, she has held the professional designation of Certified Fund Raising Executive (C.F.R.E.) by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Her community honors include Austin Business Journal’s "Profiles in Power" Award, Leadership Austin’s Polly Scallorn Community Trustee Award, Austin Community Foundation’s Beverly S. Sheffield Award for Excellence as a Nonprofit Executive, The American Red Cross "Clara Barton Medal of Honor," Volunteer of the Year for the Austin Independent School District, the Lone Star Girl Scout Council "Women of Distinction" Award, the Junior League of Austin’s Volunteer Extraordinaire Award and is a 2016 Austin Arts Hall of Fame inductee. Ruiz served as the city-wide Chair of CreateAustin, a City Council appointee to ImagineAustin’s Citizen’s Advisory Task Force, and is a graduate of the Austin’s City Works Academy. As a graduate of Leadership Austin, Ruiz served four years on its board of directors. Ruiz is a currently president of the board of Texans for the Arts, a member of the executive committee of the board of trustees and former national chair of Dance/USA, the national board of directors of the Performing Arts Alliance, the board of directors of Housing Works Austin, the president of the board of directors of the Mayor’s Better Austin Foundation, and is a member of the Austin Area Research Organization (AARO). She is also a Fellow of the National Arts Strategies International Chief Executive Program. Ruiz joined the staff of Ballet Austin in 1996 as Development Director, became General Manager in 1997, and Executive Director in 1999.

Michelle Martin, Associate Artistic Director Michelle Martin had her early dance training at the Alberta Ballet School and danced professionally with the Alberta Ballet Company, Indianapolis Ballet Theatre, Hartford Ballet and Ballet Austin. During her tenure with these companies she performed soloist and principal roles in a range of classical, contemporary and modern works. Martin’s teaching credits include guest teaching engagements in Canada and across the nation, as well as five years on the faculty of Jordan College at Butler University in Indianapolis. Martin began her tenure with Ballet Austin in 1991 as a dancer with the Company and in 1992 she was appointed ballet mistress and curriculum director of the Academy. In 1999 she founded Ballet Austin II, Ballet Austin’s apprentice program, followed by the Trainee Program (now the Butler Fellowship Program) in 2000. In addition to her work in the rehearsal studio, Martin supervises the curriculum and faculty of Ballet Austin Academy, designs arts education and audience engagement programs and writes grants. She has served on the Texas Commission on the Arts peer panels for Arts Education, and Music and Dance and has been a juror for the American Ballet Competition for the past nine years. Martin was the 2001 recipient of the Austin-Under-40 award for contributions in the area of Arts and Entertainment.

Allisyn Paino-Martin, Rehearsal Assistant Allisyn Paino-Martin started her dance training in New York with Ali Pourfarrokh and Kaleria Fedicheva. She has performed principal roles with the Fedicheva Ballet Company, the Indianapolis Opera and Butler Ballet. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Butler University. Since joining Ballet Austin in 1996, Paino-Martin has performed works by choreographers, including Stephen Mills, George Balanchine, Dwight Rhoden, Thaddeus Davis, Twyla Tharp, David Parsons and Agnes DeMille. She has danced The Chosen One in Mills’ The Rite of Spring, Kate in The Taming of the Shrew, Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Painter in Cult of Color: Call to Color. In 2005, Paino-Martin debuted the role of The Survivor award-winning Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project. In May of 2009, she retired from the stage dancing the lead role in Stephen Mills’ Cinderella. Her teaching credits include being on the faculty of the Ballet Austin Academy and working as guest faculty at Butler University and Austin Metamorphosis Dance Ensemble. In 2015, she co-created Dancing Into Science, an interactive workshop that teaches physics to elementary school students through dance.

Bill Sheffield, Director of Production / Stage Manager Bill Sheffield’s long tenure with Ballet Austin extends back to the late 1980s when he served as the first director of production for the organization. Sheffield rejoined the company as production stage manager in 2002 and added the duties as director of production in 2006. An Austin native, Sheffield also produced the summer musicals at Zilker Park, including the recent hits: Seven Brides, Annie Get Your Gun, Into the Woods and the award-winners Crazy for You and Big River. Sheffield formerly worked with the Austin Musical Theater, where he was stage manager for many of their productions. He has worked with many Austin arts groups, serving as stage manager, lighting designer or master electrician. Some of these groups include Austin Opera, Bruce Wood Dance, Conspirare, Roy Lozano Ballet Folklorico, ZTP, Austin Shakespeare Festival, Slavin-Nadal Dance, ADE, ART, ZST and Tapestry.

Tony Tucci, Lighting Designer Residing in Austin, Tony Tucci has been the resident lighting designer for Ballet Austin’s repertory, for more than 25 years and also currently serves as resident lighting designer/director for Ben Stevenson’s Texas Ballet Theater and Bruce Wood Dance. Tucci created the lighting designs for Leonard Bernstein's Mass at the Long Center in June 2018. In September 2018, Tucci will design a new production of Cinderella, choreographed by Ben Stevenson for the National Ballet of China. Tucci has created designs for national and international dance companies: Mejia International Ballet, Washington Ballet, Houston Dance Salad, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Colorado Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Cirque Ziva, the Golden Dragon Acrobats, National Ballet of Canada, Royal Danish Ballet, Winnipeg and Swedish Ballets, Hong Kong Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre, Ballet Contemporaneo de Caracas, Christopher Bruce's Kingdom-Geneva Ballet, Flemming Flindt's Caroline Mathilde and Lucifer's Daughter-Royal Danish Ballet. Tucci has designed for musical theater, including Austin productions of Damn Yankees, Carousel, West Side Story, Annie, Gypsy, Jesus Christ Superstar, Music Man, Oklahoma, A Chorus Line, and Sound of Music as well as Charles Duggan’s productions of Dames at Sea in San Francisco and at the Goodspeed Opera House. For 1996 Summer Olympics, Tucci designed for the Cultural Olympiad, showcasing national and international companies. He is the recipient of two Iden Payne Awards and Critics Table awards for lighting in Austin.

Alexey Korygin, Wardrobe Master Alexey Korygin was born in Donetsk City, Ukraine. He earned a master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Kiev State Ballet School of the Ukraine, and following his graduation in 1984, he danced with Donetsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater as a soloist and toured extensively throughout the USSR, Europe and United States. In 1992 after auditioning in New York, Korygin joined and danced for four seasons with Ballet Austin. At the same time, he began designing and building costumes for the company. In 1996, Korygin finished his dancing career and assumed the position of Ballet Austin’s wardrobe master. His costumes can be seen in Stephen Mills’ My Wall of Names and Bolero, as well as Lambros Lambrou’s Remembrances, Lady of the Camellias, Evolution of An Angel: Part II, Homecoming and Ulysses. He is also credited for his costumes in Ballet Austin’s production of Fokine’s Les Sylphides, Balanchine’s Pas de Dix, the pas de deux from Le Corsaire, and the principal costumes for Ballet Austin’s Swan Lake production. In 1996, Ballet Austin unveiled a new production of The Nutcracker with costumes designed by Tommy Bourgeois; Korygin masterfully constructed 40 of the new costumes, while also building all of the costumes for Not Afraid of the Dark—The Show that Glows!® in 2001. Additionally, Korygin has served as resident costume designer and co-designer for Ballet Austin’s New American Talent / Dance competition and has designed and co-designed costumes for 32 fulllength and one-act ballets, while supervising costume construction and wardrobe operations for more than 100 Ballet Austin productions.

Lar Lubovitch, Guest Choreographer Lar Lubovitch trained at The Juilliard School and founded the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company in NYC in 1968. Now celebrating its 50th season, it has gained an international reputation as one of America’s top dance companies. His works are also included in the repertoires of major dance companies throughout the world. Othello—A Dance in Three Acts, created for American Ballet Theatre and San Francisco Ballet, appeared on PBS’s “Great Performances” (Emmy nomination). Film and television dances include Fandango (International Emmy), My Funny Valentine for Robert Altman’s film The Company (American Choreography Award nomination), and Concerto Six Twenty-two and North Star for BBC. Lubovitch has also made a notable contribution to the advancement of icedancing with pieces for numerous Olympic skaters, as well as ice-dance specials for television: The Sleeping Beauty (PBS), The Planets (A&E) (International Emmy nomination, Cable Ace Award, Grammy Award). His work on Broadway includes Into the Woods (Tony nomination), The Red Shoes (Astaire Award), and Tony Award-winning revival of The King and I. In 2007, Lubovitch founded the Chicago Dancing Festival, in collaboration with the City of Chicago, which presents a full week of performances, in four different theaters, in downtown Chicago by American and international companies. The festival reaches over 18,000 people annually and is completely free to the public. In May, 2016, he premiered a new dance, The Bronze Horseman, at the Mikhailovsky Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia. In the fall of 2016, he was named a Distinguished Professor at the University of California-Irvine. Recent awards: 2007, Chicagoan of the Year (Chicago Tribune); 2008, Chicagoan of the Year (Chicago Magazine); 2011, Ford Fellow (US Artists); 2011, Dance / USA Honors Award; 2012, Prix Benois de la Danse for Choreography, Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow; 2013, American Dance Guild Lifetime Achievement Award; 2014, Honorary Doctorate from The Juilliard School; 2015, named one of America’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures by the Dance Heritage Coalition; 2016, American Dance Festival / Scripps Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Katarzyna Skarpetowska, Répétieur Katarzyna Skapetowska is a native of Warsaw, Poland. She is an alumna of the NYC High School of Performing Arts and received a B.F.A. from The Juilliard School in 1999 under Artistic Director Benjamin Harkarvy. In 1992, she performed on Broadway in Metro, directed by Janusz Jozefowicz. Kate was a member of Parsons Dance (1999–2006), where she performed lead roles in the company’s repertory including the iconic Caught. She danced for The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company (2007–2014), performing at many reputable venues such as New York’s City Center, The Kennedy Center, and The Bolshoi Theater, and was a guest artist with The Battleworks Dance Company and Buglisi Dance Theater. Kate was named Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2016. Her choreography has been performed by Richmond Ballet, Ailey II, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Parsons Dance, Buglisi Dance Theater, Houston METdance, Hubbard Street 2, and Bruce Wood Dance Project, among others. Peter Bay, Music Director / Conductor Maestro Peter Bay became music director and conductor of the Austin Symphony Orchestra in 1998. He is also music director of the Hot Springs Music Festival (Ark.), and Conductor of the Big Sky Festival Orchestra (Mont.). Bay has appeared with 80 different orchestras including the National, Chicago, St. Louis, Houston, Dallas, Baltimore, Bochum (Germany), Carinthian (Austria), Lithuanian National, and Ecuador National Symphonies; the Minnesota and Algarve (Portugal) Orchestras; the Louisiana, Buffalo, and Boca del Rio (Mexico) Philharmonics; the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Eastman and Aspen Opera Theaters. Summer music festival appearances have included Aspen (Colo.), Music in the Mountains (Colo.), Grant Park and Ravinia (Ill.). Bay is the primary conductor for Ballet Austin. He has conducted four Austin Opera productions and returns for La bohème in April/May 2019. A native of Washington, D.C., Bay is a graduate of the University of Maryland and the Peabody Institute of Music. In 1994, he was one of two conductors selected to participate in the Leonard Bernstein American Conductors Program and was also the first prize winner of the 1980 Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Young Conductors Competition. He conducted the Hanan Townshend score for the 2016 film The Vessel and led performances of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass as part of the Bernstein100Austin celebrations. Bay was inducted into the Austin Arts Hall of Fame in May 2016.

THE FIREBIRD SYNOPSIS In the enchanted garden of Kastchei the Immortal, the Firebird appears, pursued by Prince Ivan. The Firebird tries to pluck golden apples from the magic tree, but Ivan seizes her. Ivan will not release her until she gives him one of her feathers as a pledge of help should he ever need it. She flies off. The darkness dissolves, and Ivan finds himself at the gate of an old castle. Eight maidens enter, led by the beautiful Tsarevna, who tells Ivan that this is the castle of Kastchei, a magician who waylays passing travelers by casting spells on them. After exchanging tender glances with Ivan, Tsarevna leads her companions in a lively dance. She and Ivan kiss. It is now dawn and the maidens must return to the castle. In spite of Tsarevna’s warning, Ivan decides to follow them. As soon as he opens the gates, bells ring out and a crowd of strange figures rushes from the castle, followed by Kastchei, before whom they prostrate themselves. Kastchei advances on Ivan and tries to turn him to stone, but Ivan waves the Firebird’s feather in his face, invoking her aid. She reappears and forces the crowd to dance until they fall, exhausted, to the ground. Suddenly, Kastchei reappears and mortally wounds the Firebird. As she lies dead, Ivan steals the great egg that contains Kastchei's soul. He throws it to the ground. Kastchei dies, and his spell is broken. The crowd of captives is restored to human form and the Firebird is reborn. Tsarevna and Ivan are married, and everyone rejoices.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES Max Azaro BAII: 2017–2018 | Joined Company: 2018 Max began dancing under Risa Kaplowitz, Director of Princeton Dance and Theater (PDT) Studio in Princeton, N.J. In 2014 Max began studying at American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School after winning a full scholarship through Youth American Grand Prix. He trained at the JKO School from 2014–2017, first under Franco De Vita and then Cynthia Harvey. In 2016 Max was awarded the prestigious Northern Trust Scholarship. Max spent his summers at PDT, Orlando Ballet School, the Chautauqua Institute, and American Ballet Theatre, N.Y. He also studied at the Amsterdam International Summer School, IBStage in Barcelona, and International Ballet Masterclasses in Prague. He began performing at age 12 with Princeton Youth Ballet. While at the JKO school, Max performed Jeremy McQueen’s original work, Garden of Dreams, at the Ballet Across America Gala. He performed the Paquita Grand Pas de Deux and George Balanchine’s La Source at JKO’s year-end performance.

Ian J. Bethany BAII: 2008–2009 | Joined Company: 2009 Ian is from Long Island, N.Y. He started dancing as a tap and jazz student at Robert Mann Dance Centre. He started ballet at Tap to Pointe Dance Center, continuing at the Frank Ohman School of Ballet, the School of Ballet Chicago, Ballet Academy East, and Pacific Northwest Ballet School. With Ballet Austin, Ian performed in George Balanchine’s Agon and Allegro Brillante, Nicolo Fonte’s Lasting Imprint, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Requiem for a Rose, Gabrielle Lamb’s Dovetail, Bradley Shelver’s The Last Just, Stephen Mills’ Carmina Burana, The Magic Flute, and The Nutcracker, as the Master of Ceremonies in Mills' Cinderella, and the Bluebird Pas de Deux in The Sleeping Beauty. He has performed with project-based company Performa / Dance, has sung with the Austin Opera, was seen in ZACH Theatre's Mary Poppins, in Zilker Theatre Productions' Oklahoma! as Dream Curly, and does numerous juggling gigs around Austin. Ian has choreographed and taught for the Ballet Austin Academy, for Harmony School of Creative Arts, and for Agni Entertainment.

Orlando Julius Canova Joined Company: 2005 Orlando began his ballet training with Lawrence and Sarma Rosenberg at the Anaheim Ballet School. At age 16 he moved to New York City to train at the School of American Ballet (SAB). There he received a full tuition merit scholarship and was sponsored by Debbie Allen. Orlando furthered his ballet training with Miami City Ballet School. In 2001, Orlando became an Arpino Apprentice with the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago and in 2003 he joined as a full company member. While at Joffrey, Orlando played the part of apprentice in Robert Altman's film The Company. At Ballet Austin, Orlando has danced lead roles in The Nutcracker, Cult of Color: Call to Color, Truth & Beauty: The Bach Project, Romeo & Juliet, Nine Sinatra Songs, silence within silence, and The Magic Flute. He has worked with such choreographers as Stephen Mills, Twyla Tharp, KT Nelson, Dominic Walsh, Nicolo Fonte, Sonya Delwaide, Toni Bravo, Michelle Thompson, Reginald Harris, and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. Orlando has also danced for Molly Lynch’s National Choreographers Initiative in 2012 and 2013. There he worked with Darrell Moultrie, Melissa Barak, Val Caniparoli, Frank Chavez, Kitty McNamee, and Susan McCullough. In addition, Orlando teaches dance at Ballet Austin Academy, The Butler Center for Dance & Fitness, Saint Mary’s Hall, Austin City Ballet, and Alamo Heights High School.

Edward Carr BA Trainee: 2006–2007 | BAII: 2007–2008 | Joined Company: 2008 Growing up in Pittsburgh, Penn., Carr received his first 12 years of ballet training at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater School. After graduating high school, he continued his training at Canada’s National Ballet School in Toronto, where he had the privilege to work with choreographers including James Kudelka, Toer van Schayk, and Rudi van Dantzig. Carr moved to Austin in 2006 to attend Ballet Austin’s trainee program and joined the main company in 2008 after one season as an apprentice. Since joining Ballet Austin, he has been featured in Stephen Mills’ Light / The Holocaust and Humanity Project, premiered as The Beast in Mills' Belle REDUX / A Tale of Beauty & the Beast, and has been featured in work by George Balanchine, Twyla Tharp, Lar Lubovitch, Pam Tanowitz, Pontus Lidberg, Nicolo Fonte, and Jennifer Hart. Carr recently appeared in visual artist Rodney McMillian’s film Untitled (neighbors), part of McMillian’s first solo exhibition Against a Civic Death at The Contemporary Austin. Carr also serves as the associate director to local contemporary dance company Performa/Dance, founded in 2014 by Carr and local choreographer Jennifer Hart. Performa/Dance continues to expand its reach and produce dance for the Austin scene and has been recognized with several Austin Critics Table Awards.

Katherine Deuitch BAII: 2016–2018 | Joined Company: 2018 Katherine is originally from St. Paul, Minn. She began her pre-professional training at Minnesota Dance Theatre under Lise Houlton. She became an apprentice with MDT in 2013, where she danced in works by Loyce Houlton, Lise Houlton, Elliot Feld, and Emery LeCrone, among others. In 2014, she was invited to attend the School of American Ballet. While at SAB, she participated in multiple Choreographic Institute’s where she originated roles by Dana Genshaft and Peter Walker. She also appeared in SAB’s annual Workshop performance in Jerome Robbins' Fanfare as well as George Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments. As an apprentice with Ballet Austin, she has had the opportunity to dance in works by Stephen Mills, Michelle Thompson, Thang Dao and Septime Webre. Most recently, she appeared in Jennifer Hart’s Fellow Travelers with Performa/Dance.

Constance Doyle BAII: 2015–2017 | Joined Company: 2017 Born in Frankfurt, Germany, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Constance trained until age 17 under Gigi Hyatt and Janusz Mazon. At 17, she was invited to study year-round at the School of American Ballet in New York City, where she was thrilled to complete her final years of training. She performed George Balanchine's Serenade, Western Symphony, and Valse Fantaisie during the school's Workshop performances, featured in a 2015 PBS Live from Lincoln Center national broadcast. She was repeatedly invited to dance in the annual New York Choreographic Institute and to participate as both dancer and choreographer in SAB's Student Choreographic Workshop. In 2015 she began her apprenticeship with Ballet Austin, and 2017 was invited to join the main company. At Ballet Austin, she has particularly enjoyed dancing the principal couple in Stephen Mill's Touch, George Balanchine's Allegro Brillante, and was honored to join the company in their monthlong tour of China. She is thankful to her parents, whose love and sacrifices made her career possible, and she dances to glorify God and magnify His beauty.

Hailey Dupont BAII: 2016–2017 | Joined Company: 2017 Hailey Dupont, originally from Lafayette, La., began her ballet training at The Ballet Studio and later at Lafayette Ballet Theatre. She attended the summer programs of American Ballet Theater, Houston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Boston Ballet, the School of American Ballet (SAB) and Ballet Austin. At age 15, Hailey was awarded a full scholarship to study year-round at SAB where she trained for three years. There she performed in the Student’s Annual Workshop performances and performed "Dance of the Little Swans" in George Balanchine’s Swan Lake, and danced in Balanchine’s Danses Concertantes and The Four Temperaments as well as Jerome Robbins’ Fanfare. She also participated in SAB’s Student Choreographic Workshop and was selected to participate in lecture demonstration programs for New York Public schools. Hailey has been featured in lead roles for Ballet Austin II performances, including Michelle Thompson’s Planets and has danced corps de ballet roles in Ballet Austin main stage productions, including The Nutcracker, The Magic Flute, and ALICE (in wonderland).

James Fuller Joined Company: 2010 James Fuller is from Irvine, Calif., and was trained at Ballet Pacifica Conservatory. In 2004, James received a Youth America Grand Prix scholarship to study at the Boston Ballet School, where he completed his final year of training. James apprenticed with Oregon Ballet Theatre for a year before enrolling at Harvard University. At Harvard, James performed works by choreographers such as Paul Taylor, Martha Graham, George Balanchine and Alvin Ailey. In the summers, James studied modern dance with the Paul Taylor Dance Company, American Dance Festival, and Beijing LDTX. James directed the Harvard Ballet Company in 2009 and graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of the Arts in Philosophy, a secondary field in dramatic arts, and a language citation in Urdu-Hindi. Since joining Ballet Austin, James has performed in original works by Stephen Mills, including Luminaria and Though the Earth Gives Way, danced in Balanchine’s Agon, performed with the National Choreographers Initiative, and choreographed for Houston City Dance.

Oliver Greene-Cramer BAII: 2013–2014 | Joined Company: 2014 An Austinite by birth, Oliver was raised in southern Vermont and received his early training at the Brattleboro School of Dance and Burklyn Ballet Theatre. He graduated from the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Dance with a BFA—Ballet Concentration and was given the award for Outstanding Senior in Modern Dance. While at Purchase, Oliver danced in works by George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, Lar Lubovitch, Nicolo Fonte, John Heginbotham, and Gabrielle Lamb. Immediately after graduation, he joined the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company in New York City. Since joining Ballet Austin, Oliver has been featured in works by Stephen Mills, Lar Lubovitch, Pontus Lidberg, Pam Tanowitz, Septime Webre, Jimmy Orrante, and Nelly van Bommel. In the summer of 2017, he toured Thang Dao's award-winning duet We Circle the Night to the Danza in Arte a Pietrasanta Festival in Italy. Oliver was recently a performer in Rodney McMillian's Untitled (neighbors) as part of Against a Civic Death funded by the inaugural Susan Deal Booth Art Prize exhibited at the Contemporary Austin. He is also a member of Performa/Dance, an Austin-based dance company directed by Jennifer Hart and Edward Carr.

Courtney Holland Joined Company: 2016 Courtney Holland was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, and at the age of 11 began her professional training at Canada’s National Ballet School. After graduating from NBS in 2010, Courtney moved to New York City to continue her training at the Dance Theatre of Harlem on a full scholarship. In June 2012, she was a finalist at the Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition. She was awarded a full scholarship to the Banff Centre’s Professional Dance Program where she appeared as a guest artist in the Arts Summer Festival, performing George Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco and Christopher Wheeldon’s Souvenirs. In 2013, Courtney joined Charlotte Ballet II where she performed works by George Balanchine, Dwight Rhoden, Sasha Janes, Mark Diamond and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux. There she had the privilege to perform featured roles in The Nutcracker and the role of the Autumn Fairy in Cinderella, under the direction of Kennedy Center Honoree Patricia McBride. Since joining Ballet Austin in 2016, Courtney has had the pleasure of dancing several of Stephen Mills’ ballets as well as works by Septime Webre and Pam Tanowitz. She enjoyed performing Justin Peck’s In Creases and was featured in Paul Vasterling’s Peter Pan as Tinker Bell. Courtney feels very blessed to have the love and support of her family and is excited for her third season with Ballet Austin.

Aara Krumpe BAII: 1999–2001 | Joined Company: 2001 Aara Krumpe is originally from Corpus Christi, Texas. She received her early training from Nancy Sulik and studied for three years at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School under David Holladay. Since joining Ballet Austin, Aara has enjoyed dancing in many Stephen Mills ballets, including the title roles in Belle REDUX / A Tale of Beauty & The Beast, Romeo & Juliet, The Firebird and The Taming of the Shrew, as well as the Desire Pas de Deux, Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, Gertrude in Hamlet, Fairy Godmother in Cinderella and The Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker. She has also danced the principal roles in the classics Swan Lake, Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty and Bournonville’s La Sylphide. Aara is most thankful for the opportunity to perform the role of the Survivor in Mills’ Light / The Holocaust & Humanity Project in Austin, Miami and Israel. Aara and her husband, Ambrose, are the proud parents of two wonderful boys, Leo and Lucas.

Paul Martin BAII: 2015–2017 | Joined Company: 2017 Paul Martin has been promoted to the main company after joining Ballet Austin II in 2015 and dancing as an apprentice for two years. Paul began his ballet and dance training in West Des Moines, Iowa, under the tutelage of Hank and Beth Adams. With their guidance, Paul earned scholarships to notable summer intensive programs, including Kansas City Ballet School, Nutmeg Conservatory, San Francisco Ballet School and Ballet Austin. In 2014, Paul received a scholarship to study full time at Kansas City Ballet School where he advanced his training, culminating in a performance opportunity with Kansas City Ballet II. As a Ballet Austin II apprentice, Paul performed lead roles, such as The Judge in Nick Kepley’s Season of Innocence and The Prince in Nelly Van Bommel’s Snow White. Additionally, he’s performed in Jennifer Hart’s Spaces and Stephen Mills’ Touch and The Nutcracker.

Grace Morton BAII: 2012–2013 | Joined Company: 2013 Grace Morton is from Seattle, Wash. She received her early training at Dance Fremont under the direction of Vivian Little and Mary Reardon. In 2010, she continued her study under Damara Bennett in Oregon Ballet Theater’s professional division. As a member of Ballet Austin II, she enjoyed performing featured roles in Stephen Mills’ Luminaria, Jennifer Hart’s Wavemakers and Nelly van Bommel’s Snow White. After joining the company, Grace has appeared in lead roles such as Snow Queen and Lead French in Stephen Mills’ The Nutcracker, Puss ‘n Boots in The Sleeping Beauty, and has also been featured in Stephen Mills’ One / the body’s grace and CARBON53. She has had the pleasure to appear in repertoire by George Balanchine, James Gregg, Jennifer Hart, Gabriel Lamb, Pontus Lidberg and Pam Tanowitz. Grace has danced in project-based company Performa / Dance, and appeared in Zilker Theatre Production’s presentation of Oklahoma! as Dream Laurie. She is also a teacher in the Ballet Austin Academy.

Kevin Murdock-Waters BAII: 2013–2015 | Joined Company: 2015 Originally from Roseville, Calif., Kevin began his dance training at The Hawkins School of Performing Arts. He then went on to train at the San Francisco Ballet School for six years, with teachers such as Lola De Avila, Jean-Yves Esquerre, Parrish Maynard, and Jeffrey Lyons. Kevin then joined Ballet Austin II, and later the professional company. He has enjoyed dancing in roles such as Mercutio in Stephen Mills' Romeo and Juliet, the Dodo Bird in Septime Webre's ALICE (in Wonderland), as well as other works by Lar Lubovitch, Pam Tanowitz, Pontus Lidberg, and Justin Peck. Kevin has also worked with the Austin-based company Performa/Dance under the direction of Jennifer Hart and Edward Carr.

Preston Andrew Patterson BAII: 2008–2010 | Joined Company: 2010 Preston Andrew Patterson was born in Atlanta, Ga., and began his dance studies at the Ballethnic Academy of Dance. At age 17, he attended the School of American Ballet and later the National Ballet School of Canada. As a member of Ballet Austin, Preston Patterson has had the privilege of performing in Stephen Mills’ Wolftanzt, Light / The Holocaust & Humanity Project, Belle REDUX / A Tale of Beauty & The Beast, George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, the Peasant Pas de Deux from Giselle and the Blue Bird in Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty.

Elise Pekarek BA Trainee: 2007–2009 | BAII: 2009–2011 | Joined Company: 2011 Elise Pekarek is originally from the Chicago area and began her early ballet training with the Judith Svalander School of Ballet under the direction of Judith Svalander and Greg Begley. Since joining the company in 2011, Elise has been honored to have been featured in several works by Stephen Mills' as well as Annabelle Lopez-Ochoa, George Balanchine, Lar Lubovitch, Pam Tanowitz, Septime Webre, and Jimmy Orrante. She participated as a dancer in the National Choreographer's Initiative in 2017 and 2018. Elise has also performed in Austin-based projects such as Michelle Thompson's Illusory Impressions as well as with Performa/Dance, directed by Jennifer Hart and Edward Carr. In 2017, she performed Thang Dao's award-winning duet, We Circle The Night, for the Danza in Arte a Pietrasanta festival in Pietrasanta, Italy. Elise teaches classes for Ballet Austin's Pilates Center.

Chelsea Marie Renner BA Trainee: 2005–2007 | BAII: 2007–2008 | Joined Company: 2008 Chelsea Marie Renner, originally from Bozeman, Mont., received her early training from Ann Bates of Montana Ballet and Campbell Midgley of Queen City Ballet. Since joining Ballet Austin's main company, Chelsea has enjoyed performing principal roles in Stephen Mills' The Nutcracker as the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Paul Vasterling's Peter Pan as Wendy. She has also enjoyed performing in Stephen Mills’ Light / The Holocaust & Humanity Project, The Magic Flute, Kai, Hamlet, and as Rosalyn in Romeo & Juliet, along with George Balanchine's Agon, Nicolo Fonte's Lasting Imprint, and works by Nelly van Bommel, Gregory Dolbashian, Gabrielle Lamb, Jimmy Orrante, and Pam Tanowitz. In June of 2013, Chelsea was honored to travel to Washington, D.C., to perform Stephen Mills' Hush for Ballet Across America III at The Kennedy Center, and in September of that year joined the company in Israel for a three-city tour of Light / The Holocaust & Humanity Project. Chelsea was the first recipient of the Sarah and Ernest Butler Scholarship in 2006. When not in the studio, Chelsea loves spending her time with her three-year-old son, Landon, her husband, Aaron, and running her home-based skin care business with Rodan & Fields. Chelsea would like to thank Aaron, her parents, and her grandparents for their endless love and support.

Ashley Lynn Sherman Joined Company: 2002 Originally from the Chicago area, Ashley received her pre-professional training from Sherry Moray. She began her career with Alabama Ballet under the direction of Wes Chapman and Roger Van Fleteren. Since joining Ballet Austin, her personal highlights have been dancing the roles of Giselle, Odette/Odile, Juliet, and Ophelia in Stephen Mills’ Hamlet, receiving an Austin Critic’s Table Award for her performance. Ashley had the honor of originating the role of Pamina in Mills’ The Magic Flute, as well as premiering many of his contemporary works, and touring with the company to China, Israel, Italy, Slovenia, The Joyce Theater, and The Kennedy Center. She has also danced the principal pas de deux in Balanchine’s Agon, Lar Lubovitch’s Dvořák Serenade, and Pontus Lidberg’s Stream. Ashley has made guest appearances with National Choreographer’s Initiative, Dominic Walsh Dance Theater, and Performa/Dance. She is an alumna of St. Edward's University, and a private yoga instructor with specialization in Restorative yoga and Ayurveda. When she is not dancing or teaching, Ashley enjoys spending time with her new baby boy. She would like to thank her husband, Joshua, and her family for their generous support.

Morgan Stillman Joined Company: 2017 Morgan Stillman began his ballet training with Project Ballet in Fort Wayne, Ind., and attended Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. In 2014, he joined Nevada Ballet Theatre and performed principal and soloist roles in James Canfield and Balanchine repertoire. Morgan joined Ballet Austin's professional company in 2017.

Brittany Strickland BA Trainee: 2007–2008 | BAII: 2008–2010 | Joined Company: 2010 Brittany Strickland is originally from Winston-Salem, N.C. She attended the North Carolina School of the Arts (now the University of NCSA) from 2001– 2007, where she trained under Melissa Hayden, Nina Danilova, and Kee-Juan Han. With NCSA, Brittany was privileged to perform George Balanchine’s Serenade at the Hollywood Bowl, as well as performing featured roles in The Nutcracker, La Fille mal Gardee, La Sonnambula and Jardin Anime. Following graduation, she continued her training with Ballet Austin under full scholarship. With Ballet Austin II she was privileged to perform featured roles in works such as Thang Dao’s Quiet Imprint and Stephen Mills’ Touch, as well as performing with the company in Mills’ Coppelia and his world premiere of The Firebird. Since joining the company, she has enjoyed performing in works such as Mills’ The Taming of the Shrew, The Nutcracker, Carmina Burana, and Light / The Holocaust & Humanity Project. In her free time, Brittany also teaches in the Butler Center for Dance & Fitness.

Christopher Swaim BAII: 2004–2006 | Joined Company: 2006 Christopher Swaim is originally from Bryant, Ark., where he began his training with Kirt and Linda Hathaway at the Academy of Ballet Arkansas. He then went on to graduate with distinction from the University of Oklahoma with a B.F.A. in Ballet Pedagogy. Christopher has danced principal roles in The Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia, The Nutcracker, Agon and Valse Fantaisie, and has been featured in works by George Balanchine, Twyla Tharp, Stephen Mills, Thaddeus Davis, Amy Seiwert, James Clouser, Miguel Terekhov, Septime Webre, Nelly van Bommel, Gina Patterson, Nicolo Fonte, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Jimmy Orrante and Ben Stevenson. He has also performed at the 2010 San Francisco International Arts Festival as a guest with Amy Seiwert’s company, Imagery, with The Suzanne Farrell Ballet at the Kennedy Center in 2008 and again in 2013 with Ballet Across America III, with Ballet Arkansas as a guest in 2012 and 2014, and at the 2011 Festival des Arts de SaintSauveur. Christopher teaches in the Butler Center for Dance & Fitness and Ballet Austin Academy and has guest taught across the country.

Jaime Lynn Witts BA Trainee: 2001–2003 | BAII: 2003–2004 | Joined Company: 2004 Jaime Lynn Witts is originally from Bucks County, Penn., where she received most of her training from Maxim Ponomarenko, Oleg Briansky and Mireille Briane. She attended summer programs at CPYB, Boston Ballet and Ballet Austin. There, she continued her studies with Truman Finney in Ballet Austin’s Trainee program and as a member of Ballet Austin II. Since joining the company, Jaime has performed in works by numerous choreographers, including Pontus Lidberg, Pam Tanowitz, KT Nelson, Nicolo Fonte, Loni Landon, Jennifer Hart, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Gabrielle Lamb. She has enjoyed performing principal roles in George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante and Agon.
