Subdudes tues & Wed, Sept 24 & 25 @ 8 pM Over the course of 25 years and ten albums, the Subdudes have quietly become one of America’s national music treasures. The new Orleansformed group is a living encapsulation of American music, a vibrant cauldron of sounds that stirs together meaty grooves and jazzy dynamics, soulful r&B swagger, easy vocal harmonies, cheeky rock ‘n’ roll attitude and folky social consciousness — not to mention some of the sharpest musicianship and ensemble playing you’ll ever hear from any five musicians. The group is led by singer/guitarist Tommy malone and accordionist, John magnie, but their sound is also notable for the band’s substitution of a tambourine player, Steve Amedée, for a drummer. Tim Cook rounds out the band on bass. The Subdudes draw most of their inspiration from the sounds of their native new Orleans, blending blues, gospel, funk, and r&B with their own harmony vocals.

Gino Vannelli fri & Sat, Sept 27 & 28 @ 8 pM Since his debut release of Crazy life in 1973, Gino vannelli has remained one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary music. With a voice as memorable as his hair, he has been dubbed, “The Canadian singer/ songwriter with a lion’s mane.” But vannelli’s evolving music has kept his fan base growing for over 40 years. From rock, to jazz, to soul, and even classical, this Triple Threat (vannelli is a prolific producer as well) has left no musical stone unturned. With an amazing 19 albums under his belt, most hitting the Billboard chart, his 2015 release, live in lA hit number one on Amazon. Adding to the 20 million records he has already sold worldwide, vannelli will be releasing his 20th album in 2018. A brand new collection of recently written songs on his acoustic guitar, this release will most certainly add to his pantheon. Whether performing piano-voice concerts in theaters, singing before symphony orchestras in concert halls, big bands or a pop ensemble, to throngs of enthusiastic fans, vannelli remains impassioned and true to his art as ever. his standing as a powerful and innovative live performer, his well-hewn musical skills as composer, poet, producer, arranger, and bandleader, keep his career rising to greater heights. vannelli is a living legend, and his live shows should be seen to be believed.

Eddie Palmieri thurs, Oct 17 @ 8 pM Known as one of the finest pianists of the past 60 years, eddie palmieri is a bandleader, arranger, and composer of salsa and latin jazz. his playing skillfully fuses the rhythm of his puerto rican heritage with the complexity of his jazz influences: Thelonious monk, herbie hancock, mcCoy Tyner as well as his older brother, Charlie palmieri. palmieri perfected his arranging skills in the 1970’s releasing several impressive recordings that reflected his unorthodox approach to music. his unconventional style would once again surprise critics and fans with the 1970 release entitled “harlem river drive.” This recording was the first to merge what were categorized as “Black” and “latin” music into a freeform sound that encompassed elements of salsa, funk, soul and jazz. in 1975, palmieri won the first-ever GrAmmy for Best latin recording for The Sun of latin music (he’s won ten GrAmmys altogether to date), including two for his influential recording with Tito puente, Obra maestra/masterpiece. recognizing palmieri as an American icon, the Smithsonian’s national museum of American history in Washington, dC, recorded two of palmieri’s performances for its archives. in addition to the GrAmmys, palmieri has received numerous honors: eubie Blake Award; most exciting latin performance, presented by the BBC in london; yale university’s Chubb Fellowship, usually reserved for international heads of state, but given to palmieri in recognition of his work building communities through music; harlem renaissance Award; and the Jay mcShann lifetime Achievement Award. in 2013, eddie palmieri was awarded the coveted Jazz master award by the national endowment of the Arts (neA). The neA Jazz master award is the highest honor an American Jazz artist can receive and was awarded a lifetime Achievement Award by the latin Academy of recording Arts & Sciences.

adrian belew Sat, Sept 7 @ 7 pM There are many ways to describe Adrian Belew. Some say he is the world’s greatest experimental whammy twang bar, czar rhino and stunt guitarist extraordinaire. Over the course of his career, he has released 20 critically acclaimed solo records and was the front man, singer, co-writer and guitarist for progressive rock powerhouse King Crimson for 30 years. With a resume that features some of the biggest names in music including david Bowie, nine inch nails, Talking heads, paul Simon, Frank zappa, paul Simon, nine inch nails, Tom Tom Club, Talking heads and Tori Amos, Belew is famous for pushing the boundaries of the guitar in both technical and tonal exploration. Known for his inventive guitar sounds, he has begun mixing his unique sound, complex time signatures, witty lyrics, wild sound and technical mastery into his newest app creations, Flux:Fx and Flux by belew.

For legendary singer songwriter, Felix Cavaliere, making people feel good is primary to his illustrious 50-year career that includes the rock & roll hall of Fame, Songwriter hall of Fame, vocal Group hall of Fame, and GrAmmy hall of Fame. in 1965, he formed the young rascals with dino danelli, eddie Brigati and Gene Cornish. The group quickly caught the attention of fans, as well as Atlantic records with their high-energy sets. Soon after changing their name to The rascals, they struck number one on the pop charts with their mega hit, “Good lovin’.” They followed suit with a string of hits like “i’ve Been lonely Too long,” “Groovin’”(which also reached number one), “how Can i Be Sure,” “A Girl like you,” “A Beautiful morning,” and “people Got to Be Free” (their third number one in just two years). To this day, The rascals are considered the best ‘blueeyed soul’ group to come out of the 1960s, as well as one of the groups with the most record sales. Few artists can claim they defined a generation, but Cavaliere continues to remind us to keep listening for the world’s beauty.

John Sebastian Sat, Sept 22 @ 8 pM For over four decades, the songs of John Sebastian have been a part of our American musical fabric. his group, The lovin’ Spoonful played a major role in the mid-’60s rock revolution with their first seven singles reaching the Top 10. This was unprecedented, and utterly unthinkable at the height of Beatlemania. By taking roots music and making it sound modern, Sebastian, created thoroughly modern music that sounded like it contained the entire history of American music. Songs you know by heart, like, “do you Believe in magic?,” “you didn’t have To Be So nice,” “daydream,” “younger Girl,” “did you ever have To make up your mind?,” “Summer in The City,” and more – did more than simply answer the British invasion, they carried the musical tradition into the future. Sebastian’s skills on guitar, harmonica and autoharp have made him a sought-after accompanist since the village folk scene, working with mississippi John hurt, Judy Collins, Bob dylan and many others. But perhaps his most indelible mark on American culture is when producers of a Tv show called Welcome Back Kotter commissioned a theme song in 1976. Sebastian’s “Welcome Back” became a chart-topping solo record. Being inducted into the rock ‘n roll hall of Fame in 2000 hasn’t slowed him down. Whether the stage is Carnegie hall or a folk festival in some far-flung locale, Sebastian is still out there spreading his gospel of American roots music.
texicana Mamas
tish hinojosa, patricia vonne & Stephanie urbina Jones Sun, Sept 29 @ 7 pM Separately their musical influences include folk, conjunto, Americana, flamenco, country, Tex-mex rock ‘n’ roll, the Texas singer-songwriter tradition, the mariachi, corrido and norteño traditions of the border, and lone Star country-rock. Together, melding these inspirations with their own distinct sounds and personalities, the Texicana mamas are creating something new, fresh, vibrant and distinct. A collaborative effort between three of the state’s most celebrated latina musicians—Tish hinojosa, Stephanie urbina Jones and patricia vonne—the newlyminted trio has already created a buzz that complements the kudos their individual careers have collected. debuting at nashville’s famed Bluebird Café last fall, the Texicana mamas have also performed at the latinapalooza showcase during this year’s South By Southwest music festival and have other dates in the pipeline. All three women are San Antonio natives with deep roots in the latino/Anglo culture of South Texas. And though they came to music by different routes, each is governed by a passion for storytelling and cross-cultural musical fusion.

acoustic alchemy fri, Oct 18 @ 7 & 9:30 pM Acoustic Alchemy have spent thirty years making music and, in that time, they have not only received critical acclaim for their albums (including three GrAmmy nominations) but have built a reputation for being one of the most exciting live bands in the business. For the last decade, the band lineup has featured Greg Carmichael on nylon guitar, miles Gilderdale on steel string acoustic and electric guitar, Fred White on keyboards, the powerhouse rhythm section of Greg Grainger on drums and his brother Gary Grainger on bass. Since 1987, Acoustic Alchemy has pushed the limits of the acoustic guitar’s potential by embracing a spectrum of musical styles ranging from straight-ahead jazz, to folk, to rock, to world music and beyond. Through it all, the overriding mission of Acoustic Alchemy has been to reach the broadest possible audience by pushing the potential of instrumental music to embrace a broad spectrum of styles without being limited to any specific genre.

david Wilcox Wed, Oct 23 @ 8 pM david Wilcox is now 20 records into a career marked by brilliant guitar playing, stirring vocals, and masterful songwriting. his lyrical insight is matched by a smooth baritone voice, virtuosic guitar chops, and creative open tunings, giving him a range and tenderness rare in folk music. Wilcox released an independent album in 1987, was a winner of the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival new Folk Award in 1988, and by 1989 he had signed with A&m records. his first release on the label, How Did You Find Me Here, sold over 100,000 copies the first year largely by word of mouth. his latest record, The View From the Edge (2018), is a collection of powerful new songs, many of which Wilcox has been performing at live shows for the past several years. it’s an album that reflects four years of thinking, writing, crafting, playing, and life. Considered a ‘songwriter’s songwriter,’ his songs have been covered by artists such as k.d. lang and many others. in addition to Wilcox’s writing prowess, his live performances hold audiences rapt with nothing more than a single guitar, thoroughly written songs, a fearless ability to mine the depths of human emotions of joy, sorrow, and everything in between.
Jd Souther tues, Oct 29 @ 8 pM GrAmmy nominated Jd Souther has penned countless hits for the eagles, linda ronstadt, roy Orbison, James Taylor, don henley, George Strait, Trisha yearwood, Brooks & dunn, and found success as a solo artist. This led him to being inducted into the Songwriter’s hall of Fame in 2013 and become one of the most celebrated songwriters of his generation. On Souther’s latest studio album, Tenderness, this masterful singer/songwriter creates a perfect balance of understated jazz with the ineffable pop narratives that have been the backbone of much of his greatest work. his classic albums John David Souther, Black Rose and Home by Dawn have been released as expanded reissues due their overwhelming popularity with fans and critic alike.

david bromberg Quintet thurs, Nov 7 @ 8 pM For Americana godfather david Bromberg, it all began with the blues. his incredible journey spans five-and-a-half decades, and includes adventures with Bob dylan, George harrison, and Jerry Garcia. A musician’s musician, Bromberg’s mastery of several stringed instruments (guitar, fiddle, dobro, mandolin), and multiple styles is legendary, leading dr. John to declare him an American icon. Bromberg even co-invented a genre: newgrass. But now, with his latest release, The Blues, the Whole Blues, and Nothing But the Blues, he focuses on the music he discovered in high school, when, circa late 50s, he was introduced to a friend’s dad’s collection of blues 78s. The album is both blues primer and an opportunity to witness a master embracing this distinctly American music with passion and grace. Bromberg’s guitar work remains a marvel; amped electric lead – both slide and fretted – and delicately powerful acoustic fingerpicking. you do not want to miss this eclectic and electric show!
Jon Mclaughlin fri, Nov 15 @ 8 pM everything in Jon mclaughlin’s life makes its way into his music, whether he’s conscious of it or not. The artist, raised in indiana and based in nashville, brings all of his experiences and beliefs into each song he creates. mclaughlin released his debut album, indiana, in 2007, attracting fans with his heartfelt, hook-laden songwriting and impassioned delivery. he’s released five fulllengths in the twelve years since and revealed a true evolution in both his piano playing and singing. he’s played shows with Billy Joel, Kelly Clarkson and Adele, collaborated with longtime friend Sara Bareilles, co-written with demi lovato and even performed at the Academy Awards in 2008. mclaughlin’s album, Like Us, dropped in October of 2015, and he spent the past few years touring extensively before heading back into his nashville studio to work on new music. in november of 2018 mclaughlin released his album Angst & Grace which features “Still my Girl” written for his youngest daughter. As with everything he does, mclaughlin’s goal is to create connections. he wants to translate his experiences and ideas into music that reaches fans everywhere. his passion for music and playing is evident in each note he plays.

Ottmar liebert fri, Nov 22 @7 & 9:30 pM Ottmar liebert’s global success can be attributed to a myriad of things – his creative vision, his determination, and a strong sense of melody. Before the age of 19, liebert had intended to stay in Germany and pursue a career as a designer and photographer, soon realizing he could not escape a life of music. her founded the first incarnation of his band, luna negra, in 1989. his debut album began as a self-produced release called marita: Shadows and Storms, but it soon made its way to radio stations, generating a buzz among programmers, and receiving unprecedented response among listeners. The fully remastered version, Nouveau Flamenco, was recorded for less than $3,000 on an old analog machine in a shack beside a gravel pit, and went on to become an international sensation, establishing liebert’s unique border-style flamenco, and becoming the best-selling instrumental acoustic guitar album of all time. Nouveau Flamenco was 14 times certified platinum in the uSA/latin genres, went platinum in Australia and new zealand, as well as Gold in Canada and mexico. liebert has since become one of the most successful instrumental artists of the past decades, entertaining audiences around the world, and releasing a catalog of 33 classic albums including live recordings, an orchestral album for Sony Classical, a binaural surround sound recording, remix albums, a lullaby, and a flamenco-reggae album.
