victor Wooten featuring: The Wooten brothers band fri, april 10 @ 7 & 9:30 pM victor Wooten is a multi-talented bass guitarist, record producer, educator, and recipient of five Grammy awards. He has been the bassist for béla fleck and the flecktones since the group’s formation in 1988 and a member of the band smv with two other bassists, stanley Clarke and marcus miller. not one to be limited by genre, Wooten has also played bass for the metal band, nitro. He has won every major award given to a bass guitarist including being voted bassist of the year in Bass Player Magazine’s readers poll three times (the only person to win it more than once) and in 2011, Rolling Stone Magazine voted Wooten one of the Top Ten bassist of all Time. His sought-after skills and growing popularity have led to recordings and performances with artists such as Chick Corea, The dave matthews band, bootsy Collins, branford marsalis, mike stern, Prince, india arie, keb mo, susan Tedeschi, Gov’t mule, bruce Hornsby, stanley Clarke, marcus miller and many more.

The Weepies tues, april 7 @ 7 & 9:30 pM singer-songwriters deb Talan and steve Tannen began writing together the night they met and soon formed indie band The Weepies. On the strength of their simple yet insightful songwriting and distinctive harmonies, they quietly sold more than 1.5 million records with over 54 million streams on spotify, 25+ million views on youTube and over 110k social media followers. in 2014, Talan beat cancer and The Weepies recorded the best album of their career. sirens shows a band at the height of its powers. The couple was unable to travel while deb was in treatment, so they worked at home, inviting guest musicians to record remotely wherever each musician happened to be, resulting in an unlikely superstar backing band. Players from across the spectrum jumped in, including, Pete Thomas and steve nieve (Elvis Costello), Gerry leonard (david bowie), rami jaffee (foo fighters), Tony levin (Peter Gabriel), Oliver kraus (sia) and matt Chamberlain (Pearl jam), plus a horn section from new Orleans. “no one song could capture that year,” says Tannen. “…It was intense, but there was beauty and inspiration, too. Deb made it back. And we’re still here.”

Crash Test dummies fri, april 24 @ 7 pM With their clever lyrics and folk-tinged melodies, the Crash Test dummies were a perfect rock band for affluent ’90s college students and yuppies. Their first album was a multi-platinum hit in their native Canada. and thanks to former Talking Head jerry Harrison’s radio-friendly production, the follow-up album, God Shuffled His Feet, broke big in the states and, in turn, Europe. The first single from the record, “mmm mmm mmm mmm,” became a worldwide Top Ten hit, making the group a minor sensation with their self-consciously bizarre lyrics and singer/songwriter brad roberts’ deep baritone. A Worm’s Life was released next followed by a threeyear hiatus until the Crash Test dummies returned with Give Yourself a Hand, which found roberts sharing vocal duties with bandmate Ellen reid. frontman brad roberts resurfaced in fall 2000 with a solo album, Crash Test Dude, a collection of acoustic hits from the Crash Test dummies and eclectic covers. it was also during this time that roberts suffered a serious car crash, almost losing his arm. seven months later, however, he returned to the Crash Test dummies circuit to issue I Don’t Care That You Don’t Mind, a brand-new batch of songs written with lobster fishermen/ musicians whom roberts met during his rehabilitation. Having just passed the 25th anniversary of “ mmm mmm mmm mmm,” it is good to see the Crash Test dummies back in action.

eliza gilkyson & carrie rodriguez las hijas de cancion Sun, March 1 @ 7 pM Carrie rodriguez and Eliza Gilkyson have teamed together to celebrate their familial roots in song. rodriguez, the daughter of musician/activist david rodriguez, and Gilkyson, daughter of folksinger Terry Gilkyson, each have built their sound on the music that surrounded them growing up. from Houston/austin to los angeles/santa fe the two women have each forged a musical identity that that is recounted in stories and songs. Onstage they create an atmosphere of intimacy and friendship, with loving acknowledgment of their musician fathers and family elders.

the atlanta rhythm Section Sun, March 8 @ 7 pM for more than 30 years, members of The atlanta rhythm section have entertained audiences all over the world with their hits. The members of atlanta rhythm section originally came together as a session band at studio One, an atlanta area studio recording artists like lynyrd skynyrd, al kooper, dickey betts and .38 special. The band put out 15 albums and were paired with contemporaries lynyrd skynyrd as the successors to the allman brothers – carrying the mantle of “southern rock” in the late 70s. but performing songs that were more musically diverse and having hits that had a softer, pop flavor, they had a sound all their own. influenced by music coming out of England and sharing the musical stylings of groups likes The Eagles and fleetwood mac, the members of ars were accomplished musicians who constantly tried to evolve – think steely dan or little feat. They have multiple Gold and Platinum albums to their credit, the band had top hits, “so into you,” “imaginary lover,” “doraville,” “i’m not Gonna let it bother me Tonight,” “Champagne jam,” angel,” “do it Or die” and “spooky.“

Marshall charloff & the purple Xperience Sat, March 14 @ 9 pM Prince personified musiCal EXCEllEnCE. To pay TribuTE to Prince’s artistry with any level of authenticity, TruE musiCiansHiP is rEQuirEd. since 2011, minneapolis-native marshall Charloff has established his dominance as the world’s premier artist paying tribute to Prince. an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer in his own right, marshall delivers the legitimacy and credibility that Prince’s music— and his discerning fans—require. marshall Charloff’s musicianship has led him to front 25 of north america’s finest symphonies, to headline at red rocks amphitheatre, to play keys for the atlanta rhythm section, to Tour Europe, and most notably—to be directly licensed and authorized by the Prince Estate and Prince’s Publishing Company. marshall and his minneapolis-based band of all-stars, The Purple Xperience, are coming to the iconic One World Theatre in austin, Texas for one night only, saturday march 14th, 2020. Come and celebrate the music of Prince played live on a level elevated above mere tribute.

albert cummings thur, March 26 @ 8 pM Entertaining audiences from his phenomenal guitar work to his incredibly impassioned lyrics and overall songwriting prowess, one thing has certainly become clear about albert Cummings’ music: He is far more than simply just the guitarist or the bluesman he’s often painted as by fans and the media alike. He offers the complete package. Though undoubtedly a masterful guitar player who burst onto the blues rock scene in the early 2000’s and almost immediately began gaining praise in that realm, Cummings’ latest release “Live at the ‘62 Center” further portrays not only his versatility as singer/ songwriter and live performer but as an artist first and foremost. Cummings first big opportunity came in the form of a chance to work with double Trouble, the late stevie ray vaughan’s rhythm section. so taken with his fire and passion were bassist Tommy shannon and drummer Chris layton that they volunteered to play on and produce his solo debut recording, 2003’s self-released From the Heart. soon tours and shows with blues legends b.b. king, johnny Winter, buddy Guy, and others brought his music to a much larger audience. like many greats before him who’ve been painted into a corner as merely great blues players, guitar players, or singers, Cummings seeks to rise above these labels and be praised for the devotion to his overall craft as a true musician.

ricky Skaggs fri, March 27 @ 7 & 9:30 pM fifteen-time Grammy award-winner ricky skaggs’ career is easily among the most significant in recent country music history. His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres, from where it all began in bluegrass music, to striking out on new musical journeys, while still leaving his musical roots intact. skaggs legendary album, bluegrass rules! swept major music awards, topped the charts, and cemented his reputation for bringing the genre to the masses. He, along with kentucky Thunder, are 8-time winners of the international bluegrass music association instrumental Group of the year. in the past decade, skaggs has been honored with inductions into the Gospel music association’s Gospel music Hall of fame and the musicians Hall of fame. in 2018, a landmark year, he was also awarded membership into the national fiddler Hall of fame, the ibma bluegrass music Hall of fame and country music’s greatest honor, the Country music Hall of fame. He struck his first chords on a mandolin over 50 years ago, and he continues to do his part to lead the recent roots revival in music. Clearly his passion for it puts him in the position to bring his lively, distinctively american form of music out of isolation and into the ears and hearts of audiences across the country and around the world. ricky skaggs is always forging ahead with cross-cultural, genre-bending musical ideas and inspirations.

cécile Mclorin Salvant Sun, april 5@ 7 pM shortly before the release of Cécile mclorin salvant’s debut album WomanChild, critic ben ratliff made a bold prediction in the pages of the New York Times. mclorin salvant, he claimed, “is still mostly unknown to jazz audiences”—then added: “though not for much longer.” mclorin salvant has more than validated that forecast. The last 24 months have been a whirlwind of success and acclaim for the young vocalist, who first came to the attention of jazz fans with her triumph at the 2010 Thelonious monk international jazz Competition. WomanChild went on to earn a bevy of honors, including a Grammy nomination and selection as jazz album of The year by the downbeat international Critics Poll. That magazine also honored mclorin salvant in three other categories including best female jazz vocalist. a few months later, the jazz journalists association selected mclorin salvant as upand-Coming jazz artist of The year and as Top female vocalist. nPr also took, honoring WomanChild as the best jazz vocal album of The year in its annual critic’s poll. in short, no jazz singer of recent memory has garnered up more honors more quickly than Cécile mclorin salvant.

Strunz & farah thur, april 2 @ 8 pM strunz & farah’s new studio recording, Tales of Two Guitars (2018), is the latest chapter in the continuing story of the two virtuoso guitarists who have created an original and enduring body of guitar music. rhythmic and colorful, and recorded with 11 guest musicians, Tales is a musical storybook of a fully evolved style of playing and composing which has been highly influential among guitarists everywhere. The new recording has 13 original pieces, full of contrasts both compositionally and instrumentally, ranging from rhythmic to romantic to jazz, incorporating in varying degrees their classic mix of latin, middle Eastern and jazz influences. Performing together since 1979, Grammy nominees strunz & farah are the innovators of an entirely new expression for the acoustic guitar. Well ahead of their time they created an original style that now is widely influential. Originally from Costa rica and iran respectively, jorge strunz and ardeshir farah have brought the musical influences of their native lands into their highly virtuosic, rhythmic, and improvisation-rich original instrumental compositions, inspiring fans and many guitarists worldwide.

arturo Sandoval fri, april 17 @ 7 & 9:30 pM six-time billboard award winner arturo sandoval was born in artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on november 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring latin influences into american jazz. He went on to become one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer. sandoval is one of the most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time, and has been seen by millions at the Oscars, at the Grammys and billboard awards. He has been awarded 10 Grammy awards, and nominated 19 times; he has also received 6 billboard awards and an Emmy award. sandoval’s versatility can be heard on recordings with everyone from dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Woody shaw, michel legrand, josh Groban, Tony bennett, bill Conti, and stan Getz to johnny mathis, frank sinatra, Paul anka, rod stewart and alicia keys amongst many others. One frequently speaks of sandoval’s virtuoso technical ability or his specialty in high notes, but he who has seen him on the piano, lyrically improvising a ballad, or has had the opportunity to enjoy the diversity of his music, through his compositions from the most straight ahead jazz, latin jazz or classical, knows that arturo sandoval is a prominent musician, and one recognizes that he is one of the most brilliant, multifaceted and renowned musicians of our time.

Jane Monheit Sun, april 19 @ 7 pM blessed with “a voice of phenomenal beauty” (New York Times), jane monheit has had plenty of milestone moments in establishing herself as one of today’s best and most important vocalistmusicians. Her 2016 album, The Songbook Sessions: Ella Fitzgerald monheit pays joyous tribute to Ella while sharing a definitive portrait of herself. Throughout the recording, monheit’s gorgeous upward swoop and earthy wordless phrases pure Ella, but this album is a classic example of a singer leading her influences rather than being led by them. she pours herself into each and every lyric with sultry savoir faire. monheit burst on to the scene when she became first runnerup in the 1998 Thelonious monk institute’s vocal competition when she was only 20 years old. soon after, she released her stunning debut album, Never Never Land, an album was voted best recording debut by the jazz journalists association and stayed on the billboard jazz chart for a year. Her next album, Come Dream with Me debuted on the number one spot on the billboard jazz chart. since then she has released numerous albums to popular and critical success and performed with sergio mendes, Toots Thielemans, Paul simon, burt bacharach, Terrance blanchard, fiona apple, and david benoit.

the Waifs Wed, april 22 @ 7 pM just one look at the beautiful cover photo on The Waifs’ new album Ironbark says a lot about who they are and what they are about; friends and family bound together by their love of music, of performing and of australia. it’s 25 years since West australian sisters donna and vikki simpson joined forces with josh Cunningham to create one of the country’s best-loved bands. One can’t imagine a better way to commemorate this significant landmark in the band’s career than with a double album of 25 original songs, one for each year, all of them recorded in the kitchen of Cunningham’s childhood home. since releasing their debut, self-titled album in 1996 The Waifs have established a strong and loyal fan-base worldwide, built on the relentless touring they did in australia in those formative years, playing in any town that would have them, honing their stagecraft and their song writing skills along the way. ironbark, the group’s eighth studio album, is a thank you to those thousands of fans who have stuck with them at home and overseas, and a fitting one given the quality of the material. in a catalogue of many great songs, from early favourites such as london still and lighthouse to black dirt Track and dark Highway from their most recent album, Beautiful You, Ironbark is an embarrassment of riches. These are just some examples from what is the biggest and strongest collection of studio recordings in The Waifs’ amazing career.
