ABOUT NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON Neil deGrasse Tyson was born and raised in New York City where he was educated in the public schools clear through his graduation from the Bronx High School of Science. Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia. Tyson's professional research interests are broad, but include star formation, exploding stars, dwarf galaxies, and the structure of our Milky Way. In 2001, Tyson was appointed by President Bush to serve on a 12-member commission that studied the Future of the US Aerospace Industry. The final report was published in 2002 and contained recommendations (for Congress and for the major agencies of the government) that would promote a thriving future of transportation, space exploration, and national security. In 2004, Tyson was once again appointed by President Bush to

thelongcenter.org

serve on a 9-member commission on the Implementation of the United States Space Exploration Policy, dubbed the Moon, Mars, and Beyond commission. This group navigated a path by which the new space vision can become a successful part of the American agenda. And in 2006, the head of NASA appointed Tyson to serve on its prestigious Advisory Council, which will help guide NASA through its perennial need to fit its ambitious vision into its restricted budget. In addition to dozens of professional publications, Dr. Tyson has written, and continues to write for the public. From 1995 to 2005, Tyson was a monthly essayist for Natural History magazine under the title Universe. And among Tyson's thirteen books is his memoir The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist; and Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution, co-written

28723 PAPI NDT 4 12_28_2017

with Donald Goldsmith. Origins is the companion book to the PBSNOVA 4-part mini-series Origins, in which Tyson served as on-camera host. The program premiered on September 28 and 29, 2004. Two of Tyson's recent books are the playful and informative Death By Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries, which was a New York Times bestseller, and The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America's Favorite Planet, chronicling his experience at the center of the controversy over Pluto's planetary status. The PBS/NOVA documentary "The Pluto Files", based on the book, premiered in March 2010. In February 2012, Tyson released his tenth book, containing every thought he has ever had on the past, present, and future of space exploration: Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier. For five seasons, beginning in the fall of 2006, Tyson appeared as the on-camera host of PBSNOVA's spinoff program NOVA

thelongcenter.org

ScienceNOW, which is an accessible look at the frontier of all the science that shapes the understanding of our place in the universe. During the summer of 2009 Tyson identified a stable of professional standup comedians to assist his effort in bringing science to commercial radio with the NSFfunded pilot program StarTalk. Now also a popular Podcast, and a limited-run Television Series on the National Geographic Channel, StarTalk combines celebrity guests with informative yet playful banter. The target audience is all those people who never thought they would, or could, like science. In its first year on Television it was nominated for a "Best Informational Programming" Emmy. Tyson is the recipient of twenty honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest award given by NASA to a non-government citizen. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by

28723 PAPI NDT 5 12_28_2017

the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid 13123 Tyson. On the lighter side, Tyson was voted Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive by People Magazine in 2000. Tyson's latest book, released in May 2017 is Astrophysics for People In A Hurry. This adorably readable book is an introduction to all that you've read, and heard about that's making news in the universe -- consummated, in one place, succinctly presented, for people in a hurry. Recently Tyson served as Executive Editor and on camera Host & Narrator for Cosmos: A Space Time Odyssey, the 21st century continuation of Carl Sagan's landmark television series. The show began in March 2014 and ran thirteen episodes in Primetime on

thelongcenter.org

the FOX network, and appeared in 181 countries in 45 languages around the world on the National Geographic Channels. Cosmos, which is also available in DVD and BluRay , won four Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, two Critics Choice awards, as well as a dozen other industry recognitions. Tyson is the fifth head of the worldrenowned Hayden Planetarium in New York City and the first occupant of its Frederick P. Rose Directorship. He is also a research associate of the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History. Neil deGrasse Tyson lives in New York City with his wife, a former IT Manager with Bloomberg Financial Markets, and their two kids. ■

ABOUT MICHAEL POLLAN For the past twenty years, Michael Pollan has been writing books and articles about the places where the human and natural worlds intersect: food, agriculture, gardens, drugs, and architecture. He is the author of the bestsellers In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto and The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, which was named one of the ten best books of 2006 by the New York Times and the Washington Post. Pollan’s book, The Botany of Desire: A Plant’s-Eye View of the World, was also a New York Times bestseller, received the Borders Original Voices Award for the best non-fiction work of 2001, and was recognized as a best book of the year by the American Booksellers Association and Amazon.com.

thelongcenter.org

Pollan is also the author of A Place of My Own (1997) and Second Nature (1991). His book Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual, was an immediate # 1 New York Times bestseller upon publication; an expanded, illustrated edition of Food Rules was published in November 2011. His most recent book is the New York Times bestseller Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation (April 2013). He is currently working on a new book titled How to Change Your Mind (May 2018, Penguin). His essays have appeared in many anthologies, including Best American Essays (the 1990 and 2003 editions), Best American Science Writing (2004), and the Norton Book of Nature Writing. In addition to publishing regularly in the New York Times Magazine, his articles have appeared in Harper’s (where he served for many years as executive editor), Mother Jones, Gourmet, Vogue, Travel + Leisure, Gardens Illustrated, and The Nation. He also wrote the fore- word to the tenth anniversary edition of Marion Nestle’s Food Politics. Michael Pollan was chosen by Time Magazine for the 2010 Time 100 in the Thinkers category. The James Beard Foundation named him as a recipient of their

thelongcenter.org

2014 Leadership Award. In 2014 Michael Pollan was awarded the Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. In 2003, Pollan was appointed the John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, and the director of the Knight Program in Science and Environmental Journalism. In addition to teaching, he lectures widely on food, agriculture, and gardening. Michael Pollan, who was born in 1955, grew up on Long Island, and was educated at Bennington College, Oxford University, and Columbia University, from which he received a Master’s in English. A World Apart, A Moment Together One World & TRIAD funds of the San Antonio Area Foundation Connecting Central Texas Military Families One World’s innovative performing arts summer camp program provided scholarships through TRIAD funds of the San Antonio Area Foundation to give kids the opportunity to be a part of the musical production of “Wizard of Oz.” When the campers took the stage every parent, no matter where they were located, including Iraq was able to see their child perform. Using amazing video technology generously provided by a partnership with LifeSize Communications, seven military bases were connected to One World Theatre, so that parent and child could see, talk and interact with each other as if they were in the same room. After the performance, each child and their family was given the opportunity to talk privately with their loved one, keeping the bond of family alive across the miles.
