At some point, deep into the second or possibly the third decade of our performing in the Tuna plays, someone informed Joe Sears and me that we had become the longest running comedy team in the country. We, of course, were thrilled and humbled, although humility was never one of our strong suits, but being known as a comedy team had never been the intention or the goal for either of us. We were quite confident that our work on the page was not some outlet or skeletal structure of a comedy act. We wrote painstakingly constructed plays that could, should, and have been done by others. The fact that one well-known artist and aspiring playwright referred to us as an “act” was especially galling. This was the same person whose sidekick’s claim to fame was performing a monologue while doing a headstand. Now that was an act—an act a little farther down the bill than the monkey with a bow and arrow but an act nonetheless.
It was not easy to convince the producers that the show could even be done with more than two actors. The image of a comedy team is hard to erase, but they stood by me and the same three actors will be performing here tonight, and I adore them and what they bring to our play. Something else to consider with these plays is that although they were originally intended as cutting-edge satire of a political fringe, they now read more like the Congressional Record. I never really imagined that there were people to the right of the average "Tunaite." That misconception has been sadly dispelled by the behavior and rhetoric of current members of the Texas Ledge, hailing from such diverse locales as Deer Park, Katy, and New Braunfels. Sometimes it’s hell being a prophet. Another interesting point regarding the Tuna plays is that they were penned in a time when political correctness had not managed to show its surly head, and if anyone in the audience is of a tendency to seek out things of which to be offended, you might want to stock up on baby aspirin. If there is anyone we don’t potentially offend in these plays, it’s not from a lack of trying.
When a group of well-regarded producers expressed the desire to remount the Tuna plays in the markets which we had played for so many years, Joe and I were adamant that we should have a hands-on relationship with the productions, and, although I had tired of doing the plays to the point of suffering a slight tremor at the mere mention of the titles, the joy of directing the tour of Greater Tuna last spring was just that, a joy.
The great comic genius Jonathan Winters once told me to remember that, “Nothing is sacred.” That has been our mantra since 1981. We intend to prove it again tonight. From Tuna, with love. Jaston Williams 41

About the Artistic Team JASTON WILLIAMS (Director, Co-Author) is thrilled to be back at ZACH. Jaston is known nationally as the co-author, co-star, and producer of the four award-winning plays in the Greater Tuna cycle. His performances have played on and off Broadway at the Kennedy Center, the Edinburgh International Arts Festival, the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. and all over America. Jaston received the L.A. Dramalogue Award for both Greater Tuna and A Tuna Christmas. A Tuna Christmas was published in "Best Plays of 1995." For several years, he toured in Larry Shue's The Foreigner. He performed in The Fantasticks and directed the musical Bad Girls Upset By The Truth. Jaston received the Texas Governor’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts by a Native Texan and has performed at the White House on three occasions. He has appeared at Austin’s State Theatre in Eugène Ionesco's The Chairs and at ZACH in Jay Preston Allen's Tru, for which he received the Austin Critics Table Award for Best Actor in a drama. He has also appeared at ZACH in The Laramie Project and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Jaston’s autobiographical play, I'm Not Lying, was the first of his five solo shows, all receiving critical acclaim in performances across the country. The others are Cowboy Noises; Camping With Gasoline; Blame it on Valentine, Texas; and his latest Maid Marian in a Stolen Car. Jaston is the recipient of the 2013 Texas Medal of the Arts and has been inducted into the West Texas Walk of Fame.
LINDA FISHER (Costume Designer) created the original costumes for the Greater Tuna at Hartford Stage Company, then Off-Broadway 1982, and later for the Embassy Communications/Norman Lear Television special which aired on HBO. Her Broadway productions include A Tuna Christmas, Painting Churches, Bus Stop, Foxfire, and Morning's at Seven for which she later designed tours and the film version for CBS Cable. Ms. Fisher received a B.F.A. in costume design from the University of Texas and her M.F.A. from Yale School of Drama. She is a 1961 recipient of Zachery T. Scott scholarship. MICHAEL KRAUSS (Scenic Designer) is a recent graduate with his M.F.A. in Scenic Design from the University of Texas where his credits include: The Pillowman, Fame! The Musical, Refugia (in collaboration with The Moving Company), Enter a Woman, Pretty Enough, and Three Decembers/At The Statue of Venus (UT Butler Opera Theatre). Since graduation, he has continued to work in the community through Butler Opera Theatre (Suor Angelica/Gianni Schicchi) and the ZACH Theatre as a scenic designer for Charlotte's Web, JJ's Arcade (ZACH/Teatro Vivo), and designing the regional tour of Greater Tuna (directed by playwright Jaston Williams). He recently worked in the Art Department as a Production Assistant on National Geographic's The Long Road Home. He is currently working on Seven (Concordia), Musical Thrones (Tour), and Leonard Bernstein's Mass (The Long Center).
RACHEL ATKINSON (Lighting Designer) is happy to be returning for her fifth year of designing lighting at ZACH where recent credits include Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; and Buyer & Cellar. As a lighting designer based in Austin, Rachel has designed recent productions for Mary Moody Northen Theatre, paper chairs, Alanté Flamenco, Trouble Puppet, Glass Half Full Theatre Company, Penfold Theatre Company, Jarrott Productions, The Long Center for Performing Arts, Theatre En Bloc, GALE Theatre Company, Mouth Radio, and GenEnCo. Nationally, she has designed productions for New York Live Arts, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company, and Seattle Children’s Theatre. She has her M.F.A. in Lighting from the University of Texas at Austin. 43

DAVE STEAKLEY (Producing Artistic Director) is now in his 27th season, and is dedicated to creating a theatre of, by and for Austin – a place where our entire community gathers to share an intimate and extraordinary theatre experience. Led by Dave’s vision, the creation of the Topfer Theatre came to fruition, opening in October 2012 with the acclaimed musical Ragtime. Anna Deavere Smith says, “Dave is the future. The YES in his theater’s walls is as palpable as the walls themselves. That YES, I believe, will lead to something brand new, to connect with a broader, more global audience.” With Dave as artistic leader, ZACH has produced multiple World Premieres by Anna Deavere Smith, Steven Dietz, Jaston Williams, Everett Quinton, John Walch, Allen Robertson and The Flaming Idiots. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. Dave created the first bilingual adaptation of Webber and Rice’s musical Jesucristo Superstar, and set The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Katrinaravaged New Orleans with a jazz/R&B reinvention, which received national acclaim from The New York Times and about which Todd Gershwin says, “It was Dave’s creative production of Porgy and Bess that really opened my eyes to the need to finally allow a creative team to interpret the opera in a fresh manner, which led to the recent Broadway production.” Dave has directed many ZACH productions, and some favorite experiences include: Million Dollar Quartet, The Great Society, Mary Poppins, Tribes, Mothers and Sons, All the Way, A Christmas Carol: A Rockin’ New Musical, The Who’s Tommy; The Gospel at Colonus; Harvey; 33 Variations; Ragtime; Next to Normal; Hairspray; August: Osage County; RENT; Metamorphoses; Our Town; Caroline, or Change; The Clean House; Take Me Out; I Am My Own Wife; Urinetown; Crowns; Omnium-Gatherum; Hedwig; Jelly’s Last Jam; The America Play; Dreamgirls; Angels in America and the first professional repertory production of The Laramie Project, and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. His regional directing credits include Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, New Stage Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, WaterTower Theatre, and Pittsburgh’s City Theatre. He is the playwright of ZACH’s A Christmas Carol, Rockin’ Christmas Party, and Keepin’ It Weird, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and American Theatre. Dave serves as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. City of Austin Mayors Kirk Watson and Lee Leffingwell declared, respectively, May 18, 2001 and October 22, 2011 as “Dave Steakley Day” on the occasion of his 10th and 20th ZACH Anniversaries. He is the recipient of the 2015 First Tee of Greater Austin Courtesy Award, the 2013 Human Rights Campaign Austin Visibility Award, 2010 Kick Ass Award, 2005 Austin Circle of Theaters’ “Outstanding Contribution to Austin Theatre” Award, seven Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin Best Stage Director” awards, the 2000 Austin Under 40 Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Award, and multiple Austin Critics’ Table and B. Iden Payne Awards for “Outstanding Director/Choreographer.” In 2009, he was crowned Austin Dancing with the Stars Champion, and he has a cameo in Richard Linklater’s 2012 film Bernie with Jack Black. 52

ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) is celebrating her 10th year at ZACH Theatre as Managing Director, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built, and opened the new Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread acclaim completing the largest capital campaign in ZACH’s history. In August 2014, ZACH celebrated the successful conclusion of the $23.5M campaign. Other accomplishments during her ten years at ZACH include the creation of a new multi-year strategic plan that is moving the organization into the next phase of its significant expansion, increasing revenue from single ticket sales by 157 percent and grown revenue from season ticket sales by 139 percent. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to more than $9 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure! Elisbeth has led her team in developing innovative new offerings on ZACH’s expanded campus including full-service bars and nightly pre-show entertainment; an exclusive skyline lounge in the Topfer Theatre for donors; and making the theatre available as a red-carpet venue for SXSW, The Daily Show, as well as other major community events. Several years ago, ZACH proudly launched The Dave Steakley Dream Fund designed to enhance the artistic vision of ZACH’s Producing Artistic Director and to maintain production quality and the facility needs of ZACH’s Topfer Theatre and campus. Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She led Montalvo’s growth from a small, communitybased organization into a major presenting venue and home to an internationally acclaimed Artists’ Residency Program. During nearly two decades at Montalvo, her other accomplishments included increasing ticket sales from less than $500,000 to more than $4 million, expanding the patron base from 6,000 to 80,000 and raising more than $20 million for capital projects. Earlier in her career, Elisbeth served as Administrative Director for the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Education/Outreach Director of the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf and as department chair and faculty member of the performing arts department of The Purnell School in New Jersey. Elisbeth graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama and Musical Theatre. She attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program, The Center for Excellence in Nonprofit Management Leaders Institute in San Jose, California and served in leadership roles for the American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Saratoga Rotary Club, and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. She has been honored by San Jose Magazine, the Austin Business Journal, and the State of California for her work in the arts. Elisbeth currently serves on the Board of Directors and is President Elect of the National Alliance of Musical Theatre in New York, and has served on NAMT’s Festival of New Musicals Committee and Executive Committee. She has been a panelist for The Houston Arts Alliance, City of Austin, National Alliance of Musical Theatre, National Fund for New Musicals, and Theatre Communications Group. Elisbeth has always had a passion for the theatre and performed for many years in summer stock, dinner theatre, and semi-professional productions on the East Coast and in California. 53

Latecomers and Seating At show time, all empty seats are released back to the house to seat those patrons on stand-by. If you are running late to your performance, phone the Box Office so that we are aware that you are on your way and can hold your seats. Any patron arriving after curtain will be seated at the discretion of House Management. Our ushers will show you to your seat, if it’s easily accessible. If the seat is not accessible, you will be shown to an available seat at a break. At intermission, you’re welcome to relocate to your ticketed seat location.
Special Needs A Box Office Associate will be pleased to assist you with any special seating needs when you purchase your tickets. We have wheelchair and limited mobility seating in all of our theatres, and provide accessible restrooms, entry doors, and walkways. To access the second-level Serra Skyline Lounge in the Topfer Theatre, you many use the elevator located in the lobby. Assisted listening devices are available at the Box Office free of charge. Drinks and Dining ZACH’s bars and lounges open 90 minutes prior to show time. The Topfer lounge remains open post-show for an opportunity to meet and mingle with the cast. Preorder your drinks at the bar, and they will be waiting for you at intermission and postshow. Our bars accept all major credit cards, and you may run a tab during your visit. ZACH’s lounges and bars offer a selection of wines, cocktails, and craft beers. Our Kleberg and Topfer bars offer a wide range of liquor selections including our popular wells and single malt scotches. Gourmet appetizer plates and small bites are also available.
