Playwright’s Acknowledgments Almost nine years ago, early in the play’s march across the country, we were playing the Empire Theatre in San Antonio. Dave Steakley was in the house. He told us that in all his years running theatres, he observed that intermission in men’s rooms was always quiet, guys coming in briskly to take care of business and leave. But at ANN, there was loud yakking, the men going on and on about Ann Richards, the play, those times and what a ball they were having. We were all encouraged by Dave’s astute observation, and indeed, it was a unique clincher. It also made me pay attention when he said I should bring ANN back to Austin one day, to his theatre. The invite stuck and we came to ZACH. I wanted to set that men’s room afire. I am grateful to Dave, to all his superb staff, and the many folks who helped get ANN home again, this time with Libby Villari starring as Ann. As always, I remember Bob Boyett whenever I give thanks, as he is the man who decided long ago, that this play, and its subject, belonged on Broadway and that he would take it all the way there.

Special Thanks This play would not be possible without the generous support of the following people who served as the principal source of information and research. Jane Hickie (Political Strategist and close friend), Mary Beth Rogers (Chief of Staff, Campaign Manager and friend), Claire Korioth (Gubernatorial Appointee and longtime friend), Cathy Bonner (Director of Department of Commerce and friend), Barbara Chapman (Executive Assistant, Austin), Sandra Castellanos (Executive Assistant, New York), Betty McKool (longtime friend and supporter) Ave Bonar (Ann’s Photographer), Bill Cryer (Press Secretary), Martha Smiley (UT Board of Regents), Suzanne Coleman (Speech Writer), David Talbot (General Counsel), Cecile Richards (Daughter and former President of Planned Parenthood), Dan Richards (Son, Attorney), Clark Richards (Son, Attorney), Ellen Richards (Daughter), Lily Adams (Granddaughter), David Miller (Administration), Jaston Williams (Playwright, Actor and Supporter), Bud Shrake (Renowned Writer and longtime friend), Jennifer Treat (Head of Fundraising), Gail Huitt (life-long hair dresser), Wayne Slater (Journalist), Janet Allen (Administrative Aide), Chula Reynolds (Supporter and friend), Don Temples (Administrative Aide), Patrick Terry (Bluebonnet Club Administrator and whippersnapper in the day), Liz Smith (close personal friend in later years), Barry Bridges (DPS Security Officer), Maynon Laverne “M.L.” Routt (personal housekeeper), Karen Knippa (massage therapist in her last years), Billy Rhea (DPS Security Officer), Evan Smith (then Editor of Texas Monthly), Ali James (Texas State Capital Curator), Mark Strama (Texas House of Representatives). Other sources simply too numerous to mention. And finally - to those of my creative and producing team who have made the journey with me throughout these years, some even again for this production with Libby... Kevin Bailey (Executive Producer), Benjamin Endsley Klein (Director), Michael Fagin (Scenic Design), Matthew Richards (Lighting Design), Ken Huncovsky (Sound Design), Zachary Borovay (Projection Design), Julie Weiss (Costume Design), Paul Huntley (Wig Design), Robert Tolaro (Stage Manager), Amy S. Layton (Motley Crew Media), Julie White (my acting partner, aka “Nancy”), and Jeff Wilson and Wendy Orshan (101 Productions - General Managers).

47154 PAPI PROGRAM 3 7_24_2019

ANN Cast LIBBY VILLARI (Ann Richards) – Veteran Texas film and television actress Libby Villari, best known for her recurring role as Mayor Rodell in NBC's Friday Night Lights, and her turn as the Grandmother in Boyhood, for which she and the rest of the cast won the SAG Award, says the real genesis of her film career came with the notion Texas Governor (1991-1995) Ann Richards had to persuade California film and television producers to come shoot their projects in Texas, y’all! Texas became "the third coast" for filmmakers and Villari's screen career took off. She did 10 screen projects during Ann's four year tenure, and she hasn't stopped since. Villari's got a knack for being hired by legendary directors like Robert Altman, Clint Eastwood, Alan Parker, Lasse Halstrom, Robert Rodriguez, Richard Linklater, Peter Berg, and David Nutter. In 2002, after a 20-minute improv session with Ethan Hawke, Rick Linklater cast Libby as Patricia Arquette's mother Katherine in his epic film Boyhood, which shot over a period of 12 years and won Best Picture at The Golden Globes and the Independent Spirit Awards. In 2005, Peter Berg tapped Villari to play Mayor Lucy Rodell on Friday Night Lights because she reminded him of Ann Richards, and he fashioned her character accordingly - a hell on wheels politician. Villari has guest-starred on numerous television series, including Grey's Anatomy in 2015. (See her full resume on imdb.com) Libby's made over 40 films in her 30 years in the business, starred in numerous plays, toured with companies like the Southern Theatre Festival, and performed with the legendary Hip Pocket Theatre at the Edinburgh Theater Festival. Her latest film Yellow Rose, shot in Austin and starring Broadway star Eva Noblezada, is winning Grand Jury prizes at film festivals around the country. Look for it to be released soon. Libby is now focused on performing Holland Taylor's ANN around the country, with Taylor's blessing and support. Villari hails from Los Angeles. (She's not from Texas, but she got here as soon as she could!) She graduated magna cum laude from University of North Texas with a B.A. in Theatre, and did graduate studies at TCU. She splits her time between L.A. and Eagle Mountain Lake in Texas where she shares home and hearth with her husband of thirty years and her critters. Member of SAG and AFTRA.

A Note from Holland Taylor

Holland Taylor as Ann Richards. Photo: Platon

There is no way to convey my love and appreciation for the hundred or so friends, associates, and members of Ann Richards’ family who helped me understand her in a way that would have been utterly impossible without them. I was compelled to write this play... the notion to do it at all, the idea for how to write it—its shape and style—came all in a rush, leaving me wide eyed with surprise. And in I plunged. During the darkest hours of trying to shape a tumultuous mountain of material– in a daydream I would see Ann in the fifth row, beaming happily and elbowing our mutual old friend, Liz Smith. Six years of work later, I made a journey I could never have imagined. But I went in whole hog, and stayed in— working hard and doing the best I could — which gave me a hint of how I’ll bet Ann Richards felt every single day. I hope Ann would like this. People loved to please her...one of her children said to please her was to get hit with a million suns. So, of course, now I want to please her, too. Texans have welcomed me in my endeavor, which I find incredibly generous (Yankee that I am), and I will always be grateful for their affection and fun and open hearts. As this is a piece of writing based on research, I should say something about the text itself. I had intended by now to annotate it, to say who told the story something was based on, what chunk was cobbled from this, what sliver was taken from that, and what large sections were stitched up out of whole cloth, though based on sure and certain knowledge of my subject. But, of course, the tide sweeps me along, and I haven’t done that yet. (I never did master footnotes in school.) Most of the play is based on years of overlapping stories told me in significant detail, including fragments of fabulous dialogue, by the players themselves. The office scenes in the play have been created based on many, many anecdotes and, in some areas, profound and lengthy study—though the play’s ending, for obvious reasons, is purely a dream — about someone I do think of now as a friend I know pretty well, and love.

ANN Director's Notes Three years ago I wrote this passage to begin my note welcoming the ZACH audience to our production of ANN: Picture this: It’s July 12, 2010. Sitting across from me at a busy cafe near Grand Central in New York is none other than the renowned actress Holland Taylor. Holland and I have met only once before, a few years prior in London. We are there to discuss a play she’s written about Governor Ann Richards. ... and little did I know that would be the day my life changed forever. I say this not because (as you may have already gleaned) I was able to secure the job, but because that was the day Governor Ann Richards would enter my life. And further down in my note I wrote: There are many memorable moments from our journey, but one in particular has always stuck with me: after one of our early performances in New York, I overheard an audience member exclaim, “I feel like I can do anything!” That statement, I knew was Ann Richards at work, or as I like to call it “The Ann Effect.” I never imagined that nine years after that initial meeting with Holland Taylor I would again have the privilege to help spread “The Ann Effect.” Of course, I also never imagined that we would be in need of it more than ever. After today’s performance I hope you too leave feeling, “I can do anything!” But more than that, I hope you leave ready to do something to make this world a better place. Ann wouldn't have it any other way.

ANN Artistic Team HOLLAND TAYLOR (Playwright) took Broadway by storm as writer and star of ANN, a one-woman show about the late Texas Governor Ann Richards, which resulted in rave reviews, a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress, and a filmed version of the 2016 production in which Holland starred at ZACH Theatre in Austin, Texas, bringing Governor Richards back home. The New Yorker has called Holland Taylor "the first vaudeville Gentile we ever saw." Her New York stage performances include Bess in Breakfast with Les and Bess, as well as the original productions of Butley, opposite Alan Bates, and A.R. Gurney's The Cocktail Hour. She still holds her head high after taking over for Eve Arden, opening the historic flop Moose Murders. She has performed narrations for the Los Angeles Philharmonic with Esa-Pekka Salonen and John Adams, and narrated the Harry Potter Suite for John Williams at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. ZACH Leadership

DAVE STEAKLEY (Producing Artistic Director) is now in his 28th season, and is dedicated to creating a theatre of, by and for Austin. Led by Dave’s vision, the creation of the Topfer Theatre came to fruition, opening in October 2012 with the acclaimed musical Ragtime. Dave is committed to a dialogue that is inclusive, because other voices and other perspectives enrich our lives, and help us to become more empathic and thoughtful people. He relishes the opportunity to engage our Central Texas region in a lively, meaningful dialogue to cultivate a greater sense of community for everyone who calls Austin home. Dave envisions ZACH as the meeting tent where our community gathers because it has investment, ownership, and representation in our creative work.

With Dave as artistic leader, ZACH has produced multiple World Premieres by Terrence McNally, Anna Deavere Smith, Steven Dietz, Jaston Williams, Everett Quinton, John Walch, Allen Robertson, and The Flaming Idiots. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. Dave created the first bilingual adaptation of Webber and Rice’s musical Jesucristo Superstar, and set The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Katrina-ravaged New Orleans with a jazz/R&B reinvention, which received national acclaim from The New York Times. Dave has directed many ZACH productions, and some favorite experiences include: The Ballad of Klook and Vinette; Once; Sunday in the Park with George; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time; The Great Society; All the Way; Disney's Mary Poppins; Tribes; Mothers and Sons; The Who’s Tommy; The Gospel at Colonus; Next to Normal; August: Osage County; RENT; Metamorphoses; Caroline, or Change; The Clean House; Take Me Out; Crowns; Omnium-Gatherum; Jelly’s Last Jam; The America Play; Dreamgirls; Angels in America; and the first professional repertory production of The Laramie Project, and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. His regional directing credits include Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, New Stage Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, WaterTower Theatre, and Pittsburgh’s City Theatre. He is the playwright of ZACH’s A Christmas Carol, Rockin’ Christmas Party, and Keepin’ It Weird, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and American Theatre. Dave has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, Texas Medal of the Arts, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. The City of Austin Mayor declared, May 18, 2001 and October 22, 2011 as “Dave Steakley Day” on the occasion of his 10th and 20th ZACH Anniversaries. He is the recipient of the 2015 First Tee of Greater Austin Courtesy Award, the 2013 Human Rights Campaign Austin Visibility Award, 2010 Kick Ass Award, 2005 Austin Circle of Theaters’“Outstanding Contribution to Austin Theatre” Award, seven Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin Best Stage Director” awards, the 2000 Austin Under 40 Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Award. In 2009, he was crowned Austin Dancing with the Stars Champion, and he has a cameo in Richard Linklater’s 2012 film Bernie with Jack Black. 50

ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) just completed her 10th year at ZACH Theatre as Managing Director, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built, and opened the new Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread acclaim completing the largest capital campaign in ZACH’s history. In August 2014, ZACH celebrated the successful conclusion of the $23.5M campaign. Other accomplishments during her ten years at ZACH include the creation of a new multi-year strategic plan that is moving the organization into the next phase of its significant expansion, increasing revenue from single ticket sales by 157 percent and grown revenue from season ticket sales by 139 percent. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to more than $10 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure! Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She led Montalvo’s growth from a small, communitybased organization into a major presenting venue and home to an internationally acclaimed Artists’ Residency Program. During nearly two decades at Montalvo, her other accomplishments included increasing ticket sales from less than $500,000 to more than $4 million, expanding the patron base from 6,000 to 80,000 and raising more than $20 million for capital projects. Earlier in her career, Elisbeth served as Administrative Director for the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Education/Outreach Director of the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf and as department chair and faculty member of the performing arts department of The Purnell School in New Jersey. Elisbeth graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama and Musical Theatre. She attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program, The Center for Excellence in Nonprofit Management Leaders Institute in San Jose, California and served in leadership roles for the American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Saratoga Rotary Club, and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. She has been honored by San Jose Magazine, the Austin Business Journal, and the State of California for her work in the arts. Elisbeth is the current President of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre in New York City, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the creation, development, production, and presentation of new and classic musicals. She has been a panelist for The Houston Arts Alliance, City of Austin, National Alliance for Musical Theatre, National Fund for New Musicals, and Theatre Communications Group. Elisbeth has always had a passion for the theatre and performed for many years in summer stock, dinner theatre, and semi-professional productions on the East Coast and in California. 51

The love list flourishes as he matures to adulthood, and when life deals a bitter blow, it proves valuable in ways he could never have predicted. Hilarious and uplifting, Every Brilliant Thing is an interactive, improvisational play about life, loss, and the lengths we’ll go to for the ones we love.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show January 18–April 26, 2020 The Kleberg

Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch February 29–April 4, 2020 The Whisenhunt

Created by Jonathan Rockefeller Based on the books by Eric Carle Directed by Shannon Fox

Book and Music by Allen Robertson Based on the book by Eileen Spinelli Directed by Allen Robertson Musical Direction by Allen Robertson

The Very Hungry Caterpillar and his menagerie of animal friends have arrived at ZACH! Little ones will go wide-eyed with excitement as they recite along to their favorite Eric Carle classics like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, 10 Little Rubber Ducks, and The Very Lonely Firefly. Each story is brought to life by an array of faithfully recreated puppets that will enchant and engage both adults and children as they leap off the page and onto the stage.

From the Emmy Award-winning creator of The Biscuit Brothers and Tortoise and Hare comes a world premiere musical based on the beloved children’s book. Mr. Hatch is a lonely man leading a ho-hum life, until one Valentine’s Day he receives a note that reads “Somebody loves you”... and everything changes. With a contemporary score and playful audience interaction, Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch is a funny, heartwarming story celebrating friendship, acceptance, and self-esteem that will delight all ages.

Holiday Add-ons A Christmas Carol November 20–December 29, 2019 The Topfer

April 8–May 3, 2020 The Topfer Written by Lisa Loomer

At age 27, Austin attorney Sarah Weddington won the landmark 1973 case Roe v Wade that legalized abortion, making her the youngest person to ever successfully argue a case before the Supreme Court. A national debate ensued, and a divide in America endures over this controversial issue. What most people don’t know is that after the case, Ms. Weddington and Norma McCorvey, “Jane Roe” the plaintiff, took divergent life paths that reflect this complicated polarization in our culture. Poignant, surprising, and with unexpected humor, Roe illuminates the difficult choices women make and the passion each side has for its cause.

Reunion ‘85 May 27–June 28, 2020 The Topfer at ZACH

Written by Charles Dickens Conceived and adapted by Dave Steakley Directed by Dave Steakley Music Direction by Allen Robertson Choreography by Jen Young Mahlstedt and Christa Oliver

Austin’s most rockin’ holiday tradition returns to make merry with new music and surprises to get the party started. ZACH’s inspired adaptation of the Dickens’ classic is a musical sleigh ride through rhythm and time, infusing the traditional Victorian story with a score that spans all genres and eras. This family-friendly spectacular creates an infectious spirit that has everyone dancing in the aisles. Celebrate the season with the loving Cratchit family and three soulful ghosts as they take Ebenezer Scrooge on a joyride to rediscover his heart and love for human kindness.

The Santaland Diaries November 27–December 29, 2019 The Whisenhunt

Created by Susan Draus, David Larson, and Cody Jamison Strand In collaboration with Becca Anderson and Dan Marshall Directed by Dave Steakley Musical Direction by Allen Robertson

We got the beat! It’s YOUR 1985 class reunion. Party back to when we were living in a material world of scrunchies, shoulder pads, and parachute pants. Reunion ‘85 is a totally immersive concert experience that starts when the Reunion Committee welcomes you with your name tag and new identity. Whether Pretty in Pink or Risky Business, Preppy or New Wave, discover who you were back in the day. Grab a funky cold medina, cut footloose to the live band rocking the 80’s hits, and party all night long with the class of 1985. It’s the time of your life!

The Sound of Music July 15–September 6, 2020 The Topfer

Written by David Sedaris Adapted by Joe Mantello Directed by Nat Miller Starring J. Robert “Jimmy” Moore

David Sedaris’ ever-irreverent and cynical Crumpet returns! The outlandish tale of a Macy’s elf merrily jingles to life in this holiday cult-classic. Crumpet sarcastically expounds on the talent it takes to juggle tinsel, tearful tots, and eccentric Santas at the most wonderful time of the year. With a preshow cabaret on weeknights, and 75 minutes of rollicking (and not so politically-correct) fun, this laugh-‘til-you-spillyour-cocktail evening will delight adult elves who like it more naughty than nice!

Holiday Heroes December 7 and 14, 2019 – Two Performances Only

The Topfer

Music by Richard Rodgers Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse Suggested by “The Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp Directed by Dave Steakley Musical Direction by Allen Robertson Choreography by Jen Young Mahlstedt

Written and Directed by Shaun Wainwright Branigan and Jerome Schoolar

The hills are alive in this immersive re-imagining of the beloved classic! You will hear the Tony, Grammy, and Oscarwinning score presented with updated arrangements, lending a new sound to old favorites like “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and “Climb Every Mountain.” Maria’s sunny nature and passion for music brings joy and laughter back to the Von Trapp family, and melts the Captain’s heart. Love triumphs, and light wins in the darkest of times.

55

Kids of all ages can’t get enough of this hilarious singalong. In this ZACH holiday tradition, Rufus and Ernie get caught up in their usual musical shenanigans and celebrate seasonal traditions from around the world. A joyous, toe-tapping good time, Holiday Heroes gives a glimpse of how other cultures share good tidings, including Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, and more. With daytime performances, it’s the perfect way to make merry with the whole family.
