43262 PAPI PROGRAM 12 3_20_2019

Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical Director's Notes Welcome to Matilda The Musical. This brilliant adaptation by Tim Minchin, Dennis Kelly, and artists at the Royal Shakespeare Company, originally comes from the dark, weird and outrageous imagination of master storyteller Roald Dahl. First published in 1988, this children’s literature staple came late in Dahl’s writing career. While researching his life to find inspiration for this production, I discovered that during his twilight years he developed a genuine fear that books were going to disappear. In hopes of proving their need for existence, Dahl, therefore, created a heroine who finds sanctuary in them. In both the original story and the musical, books ignite Matilda’s journey of self-knowledge and give her the strength to tackle immense obstacles.

Digging deeper into Dahl’s life, I disappointingly found more heartbreak than inspiration. Yet, it was fascinating to see how throughout his life the author overcame many challenges, much like the young heroes and heroines of his stories who turn their bleak circumstances from tragedies into triumphs. In the end, it was his personal philosophy on writing for young people that gave our team a way into this fantastical world and guided us to, hopefully, be “unconventional, funny, inventive, magical, eccentric” and above all “quick paced”. Though I’ve finished my research, I’ve made further personal revelations about Matilda since rehearsals began. During this time in our nation where fairness and intelligence are not always valued and consequences don’t always commiserate with actions, Matilda’s particular brand of “street justice” is personally satisfying. And as I prepare for new adventures in my own life, Matilda’s revelation that “Nobody but me is going to change my story” has resonated. In closing this chapter at ZACH, I am left wiser, more empowered and extremely grateful for being supported in doing what I always dreamed of “When I Grow Up”.

Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical Director's Notes This show is also a celebration for Abe Reybold, who I have had the honor of directing this show with, and who will be missed greatly as he moves on to the next chapter of his life. Abe has been essential in growing our Theatre for Families program that buses in over 40,000 kids each year, over 60% from low income schools, many seeing theatre for the first time. Having Abe's professionalism, humor, and vast experience has made every show he directed as high quality as any show you would see for adults. Many young people in Austin have benefited from the gift of his talents. Finally, this show celebrates young people. In the show, Matilda sings "Mustn't let a little thing like little stop you." The character of Matilda and the young people in the play represent the resilience, intelligence, and compassion of the next generation. Whether it's fighting to save our planet or make a world that is more fair and kind, she represents of the generation to come. This story reminds us, that when they grow up, we are in good hands.

Thank you for being a part of this celebration!

Matilda The Musical is a celebration of many things for me. At its core, it is a celebration of the Education program and the tremendous growth it has with my team: Chad Dike, Jen Young, Kate Shaw, Josh Wechsler, Shannon Fox, and Hannah Enright. You will see the impact and growth of this program onstage in the talent and training of our students. I owe an extra acknowledgment to Jen Young for growing the Pre-Professional Program which has become one of the best musical theatre training programs in the country.

DAVE STEAKLEY (Producing Artistic Director) is now in his 28th season, and is dedicated to creating a theatre of, by and for Austin. Led by Dave’s vision, the creation of the Topfer Theatre came to fruition, opening in October 2012 with the acclaimed musical Ragtime. Dave is committed to a dialogue that is inclusive, because other voices and other perspectives enrich our lives, and help us to become more empathic and thoughtful people. He relishes the opportunity to engage our Central Texas region in a lively, meaningful dialogue to cultivate a greater sense of community for everyone who calls Austin home. Dave envisions ZACH as the meeting tent where our community gathers because it has investment, ownership, and representation in our creative work. With Dave as artistic leader, ZACH has produced multiple World Premieres by Anna Deavere Smith, Steven Dietz, Jaston Williams, Everett Quinton, John Walch, Allen Robertson, and The Flaming Idiots. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. Dave created the first bilingual adaptation of Webber and Rice’s musical Jesucristo Superstar, and set The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Katrinaravaged New Orleans with a jazz/R&B reinvention, which received national acclaim from The New York Times. Dave has directed many ZACH productions, and some favorite experiences include: Once; Sunday in the Park with George; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime; The Great Society; All the Way; Disney's Mary Poppins; Tribes; Mothers and Sons; The Who’s Tommy; The Gospel at Colonus; Next to Normal; August: Osage County; RENT; Metamorphoses; Caroline, or Change; The Clean House; Take Me Out; Crowns; OmniumGatherum; Jelly’s Last Jam; The America Play; Dreamgirls; Angels in America; and the first professional repertory production of The Laramie Project, and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. His regional directing credits include Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, New Stage Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, WaterTower Theatre, and Pittsburgh’s City Theatre. He is the playwright of ZACH’s A Christmas Carol, Rockin’ Christmas Party, and Keepin’ It Weird, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and American Theatre. Dave has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, Texas Medal of the Arts, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. The City of Austin Mayor declared, May 18, 2001 and October 22, 2011 as “Dave Steakley Day” on the occasion of his 10th and 20th ZACH Anniversaries. He is the recipient of the 2015 First Tee of Greater Austin Courtesy Award, the 2013 Human Rights Campaign Austin Visibility Award, 2010 Kick Ass Award, 2005 Austin Circle of Theaters’“Outstanding Contribution to Austin Theatre” Award, seven Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin Best Stage Director” awards, the 2000 Austin Under 40 Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Award. ZACH Leadership

ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) just completed her 10th year at ZACH Theatre as Managing Director, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built, and opened the new Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread acclaim completing the largest capital campaign in ZACH’s history. In August 2014, ZACH celebrated the successful conclusion of the $23.5M campaign. Other accomplishments during her ten years at ZACH include the creation of a new multi-year strategic plan that is moving the organization into the next phase of its significant expansion, increasing revenue from single ticket sales by 157 percent and grown revenue from season ticket sales by 139 percent. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to more than $10 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure! Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She led Montalvo’s growth from a small, communitybased organization into a major presenting venue and home to an internationally acclaimed Artists’ Residency Program. During nearly two decades at Montalvo, her other accomplishments included increasing ticket sales from less than $500,000 to more than $4 million, expanding the patron base from 6,000 to 80,000 and raising more than $20 million for capital projects. Earlier in her career, Elisbeth served as Administrative Director for the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Education/Outreach Director of the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf and as department chair and faculty member of the performing arts department of The Purnell School in New Jersey. Elisbeth graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama and Musical Theatre. She attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program, The Center for Excellence in Nonprofit Management Leaders Institute in San Jose, California and served in leadership roles for the American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Saratoga Rotary Club, and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. She has been honored by San Jose Magazine, the Austin Business Journal, and the State of California for her work in the arts. Elisbeth is the current President of the National Alliance of Musical Theatre in New York City, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the creation, development, production, and presentation of new and classic musicals. She has been a panelist for The Houston Arts Alliance, City of Austin, National Alliance of Musical Theatre, National Fund for New Musicals, and Theatre Communications Group. Elisbeth has always had a passion for the theatre and performed for many years in summer stock, dinner theatre, and semi-professional productions on the East Coast and in California. 55

In the past we have found it a waste of advertising dollars to attempt to reach our small target audience via the expensiveFor mass media. For the past several years the Performing Arts Advertising Information,Visit Program has proven to be a very cost-effective way for us to inform potential patients www.papiaustin.com about the more personal medical service we provide.
