Once Director's Notes Sometimes you need to be thrown a lifeline. ONCE came into my life when I was coming off a breakup, and I didn’t know how much I needed this show. I had never seen the indie film that the musical was created from, so I didn’t know the story, but from the opening chords when the character Guy sings the song “Leave” with such passionate intensity that it feels like it may be the last song he will ever sing, I was drawn fully into the intimacy of this surprising and heartfelt journey.

the first time. Creating work that connects to people’s souls in the communal experience of live theatre, and being an agent of inspiration, solace, encouragement, delight, elation, and revelation through our storytelling is immensely rewarding work.

There is some very special alchemy in the music that Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová wrote that never fails to move me, no matter how many times I hear it. I learned early on when my Mom died too young how to compartmentalize difficult personal life events, in order to move on with living. ONCE created for me a valuable lesson in which I learned, perhaps for the first time, how to confront my hurt feelings around a dissolved relationship, grieve its’ ending, and see the path to move on. Since the musical premiered I have seen it many times – some people go to therapy, I went to ONCE – and it has provided a vehicle for catharsis and personal growth in my life.

Eric and Maria Groten

I often talk about the transformational power of theatre because I’ve experienced it multiple times, and I’ve seen it manifest in so many different ways for audience members over my time creating ZACH’s programming. Patrons have shared with me why a show expanded their heart and thinking in a significant way, or challenged a long held belief, or why it was particularly meaningful to their family, or how it gave them courage to do something for

I know this is true for Maria and Eric Groten, who are long time ZACH supporters at the very heart of the ZACH family, and are one of our treasured sponsors of this production. It is fitting because over the years they have quietly and lovingly provided a lifeline to so many ZACH artists, myself included, whose talent they admire and whom they have gotten to know personally. Their open-hearted generosity and kindness impacts so many in our community. Now it’s our turn to give back. Eric is facing a health challenge right now, and I’d ask that you join me in throwing the Groten's a lifeline in the form of a prayer, good energy and love for his successful healing and recovery. How we receive and pay the love forward is perhaps our greatest lesson in ONCE.

A note about the scenic design

McSorley's Old Ale House, New York City

Donald Eastman’s scenic design for ONCE was inspired by McSorley’s Old Ale House, New York City’s oldest continuously operating saloon. This poetic theatrical set is one where the world is fractured–old pressed tin ceiling tiles and lighting fixtures become the floor, and the decorated walls of paintings, signs and memorabilia have transformed into a ceiling. The space reflects how Guy’s world has been turned upside down by the breakup with his girlfriend and the recent appearance of the magical Girl who enables him to see life anew through a different lens. And like Ireland, the main playing area is an island floating unto itself.

ZACH Leadership

DAVE STEAKLEY (Producing Artistic Director) is now in his 28th season, and is dedicated to creating a theatre of, by and for Austin. Led by Dave’s vision, the creation of the Topfer Theatre came to fruition, opening in October 2012 with the acclaimed musical Ragtime. Dave is committed to a dialogue that is inclusive, because other voices and other perspectives enrich our lives, and help us to become more empathic and thoughtful people. He relishes the opportunity to engage our Central Texas region in a lively, meaningful dialogue to cultivate a greater sense of community for everyone who calls Austin home. Dave envisions ZACH as the meeting tent where our community gathers because it has investment, ownership, and representation in our creative work. With Dave as artistic leader, ZACH has produced multiple World Premieres by Anna Deavere Smith, Steven Dietz, Jaston Williams, Everett Quinton, John Walch, Allen Robertson, and The Flaming Idiots. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. Dave created the first bilingual adaptation of Webber and Rice’s musical Jesucristo Superstar, and set The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Katrinaravaged New Orleans with a jazz/R&B reinvention, which received national acclaim from The New York Times. Dave has directed many ZACH productions, and some favorite experiences include: Sunday in the Park with George; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time; The Great Society; All the Way; Disney's Mary Poppins; Tribes; Mothers and Sons; The Who’s Tommy; The Gospel at Colonus; Next to Normal; August: Osage County; RENT; Metamorphoses; Caroline, or Change; The Clean House; Take Me Out; Crowns; Omnium-Gatherum; Jelly’s Last Jam; The America Play; Dreamgirls; Angels in America; and the first professional repertory production of The Laramie Project, and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. His regional directing credits include Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, New Stage Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, WaterTower Theatre, and Pittsburgh’s City Theatre. He is the playwright of ZACH’s A Christmas Carol, Rockin’ Christmas Party, and Keepin’ It Weird, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and American Theatre. Dave has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, Texas Medal of the Arts, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. The City of Austin Mayor declared, May 18, 2001 and October 22, 2011 as “Dave Steakley Day” on the occasion of his 10th and 20th ZACH Anniversaries. He is the recipient of the 2015 First Tee of Greater Austin Courtesy Award, the 2013 Human Rights Campaign Austin Visibility Award, 2010 Kick Ass Award, 2005 Austin Circle of Theaters’“Outstanding Contribution to Austin Theatre” Award, seven Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin Best Stage Director” awards, the 2000 Austin Under 40 Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Award. In 2009, he was crowned Austin Dancing with the Stars Champion, and he has a cameo in Richard Linklater’s 2012 film Bernie with Jack Black. 52

ZACH Leadership

Photo: KirkTuck.com

ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) just completed her 10th year at ZACH Theatre as Managing Director, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built, and opened the new Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread acclaim completing the largest capital campaign in ZACH’s history. In August 2014, ZACH celebrated the successful conclusion of the $23.5M campaign. Other accomplishments during her ten years at ZACH include the creation of a new multi-year strategic plan that is moving the organization into the next phase of its significant expansion, increasing revenue from single ticket sales by 157 percent and grown revenue from season ticket sales by 139 percent. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to more than $10 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure! Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She led Montalvo’s growth from a small, communitybased organization into a major presenting venue and home to an internationally acclaimed Artists’ Residency Program. During nearly two decades at Montalvo, her other accomplishments included increasing ticket sales from less than $500,000 to more than $4 million, expanding the patron base from 6,000 to 80,000 and raising more than $20 million for capital projects. Earlier in her career, Elisbeth served as Administrative Director for the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Education/Outreach Director of the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf and as department chair and faculty member of the performing arts department of The Purnell School in New Jersey. Elisbeth graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama and Musical Theatre. She attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program, The Center for Excellence in Nonprofit Management Leaders Institute in San Jose, California and served in leadership roles for the American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Saratoga Rotary Club, and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. She has been honored by San Jose Magazine, the Austin Business Journal, and the State of California for her work in the arts. Elisbeth is the current President of the National Alliance of Musical Theatre in New York City, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the creation, development, production, and presentation of new and classic musicals. She has been a panelist for The Houston Arts Alliance, City of Austin, National Alliance of Musical Theatre, National Fund for New Musicals, and Theatre Communications Group. Elisbeth has always had a passion for the theatre and performed for many years in summer stock, dinner theatre, and semi-professional productions on the East Coast and in California. 53

David Sedaris’ ever-irreverent and cynical Crumpet is baaaack! The outlandish tale of a Macy’s elf merrily jingles to life in the intimate Whisenhunt at ZACH Theatre. In this holiday cult-classic, Crumpet sarcastically expounds on the talent it takes to juggle tinsel, tearful tots, and not-so-sober Santas during what is hailed as the most wonderful time of the year. 75 minutes of rollicking (and not so politicallycorrect) fun, this laugh-‘til-you-spill-your-cocktail evening will delight adult elves who like it more naughty than nice!

Ancient versus modern. Brain versus brawn. Peace versus war. Reptile versus mammal. The ultimate culture clash between two tribes and a fantastical race to decide the fate of them all. Written by the talented Allen Robertson and Damon Brown, with modern music and energetic reimagining of the ancient fable that will delight turtles and hares of all ages!

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

HOLIDAY HEROES

Written by Charles Dickens Conceived and Adapted by Dave Steakley Directed by Abe Reybold Musical Direction by Allen Robertson Choreographed by Jim Cooney

December 8, 2018 The Topfer

Written by Shaun Wainwright Branigan and Jerome Schoolar Due to demand, the original Holiday Heroes returns with some new songs and surprises! In this hilariously fun holiday sing-along, students get into the spirit with Ernie and Rufus. Celebrate the season with singing, laughter, and cheer.

Austin’s most rockin’ holiday tradition returns to make merry with new music and surprises to get the party started. ZACH’s inspired adaptation of the Dickens’ classic is a musical sleigh ride through rhythm and time, infusing the traditional Victorian story with a score that spans all genres and eras. Celebrate the season with the loving Cratchit family and three soulful ghosts as they take Ebenezer Scrooge on a joyride to rediscover his heart and love for human kindness.

WAKE UP, BROTHER BEAR!

Three young sisters are left in the forest by their woodcutter father. From this fairytale beginning, three resolutions are made – one sister will walk one way, one the other, and the third will stay right where she is. Twenty years later, having circumnavigated the globe, fought vikings, crossed oceans, tamed wilds, and achieved greatness, the three meet again, as women. Told with innovative puppetry, live music, and creative storytelling, this modern-day fairy tale is not to be missed.
