The art of theatre inspires our imaginations, “ enhances our life experience, and helps us to see our

world and fellow humans in a different light. We have been entertained and enlightened by what we have seen on Zach’s stages, and want others—especially young people—to have that same opportunity.

How David Sedaris found the fame he craved By Robert Fulford, National Post

Living in the age of celebrity, he felt shut out. He was miserable, drank and did drugs. Then someone waved a magic wand.

ran on NPR. In 1995, when Glass started his regular program, This American Life, he assigned Sedaris regular appearances. In almost no time Sedaris had a contract with Little Brown for his first book of collected stories and essays, some of which had appeared earlier in The New Yorker or Esquire. Eight books followed. Me Talk Pretty One Day won the Thurber Prize for American Humor. Naked won the Randy Shilts Award for Gay Nonfiction. Sedaris also has a Grammy for a comedy record. He and his sister, the actor Amy Sedaris, collaborate on writing plays. American humourist, author and radio contributor David Sedaris was discovered while reading excerpts from his diary in an obscure club in Chicago. Photo: Anne Fishbein

He continues to search his own life for unusual (and essentially comic) incidents. He is not above eccentricity. He is, for instance, a militant activist in anti-litter. When he’s at home in Horsham, West Sussex (where he lives with his partner, Hugh Hamrick), he spends four or five hours every day patrolling the nearby highway, picking up trash that motorists have thrown from their cars.

For many years, David Sedaris yearned for fame. He didn’t call it that, but a pleasant measure of fame was what he hoped for. He felt he was a nobody and he wanted to be somebody, somebody who was talked about and well known. Living in the age of celebrity, he was shut out.

This devotion to his principles has been recognized by the Queen. Every year, she invites volunteer workers from across the kingdom to a garden party at Buckingham Palace. Recently Sedaris and Hamrick were there to be feted. Unfortunately, Sedaris noticed that a number of guests were placing empty ice-cream containers in planters or behind columns. Littering in the garden of Her Majesty! Sedaris was appalled.

He did not like obscurity, that quality movie stars often claim to desire. He thought wistfully of the time in the future when he might occasionally spot his own name in a magazine. While doing routine anonymous work, like decorating someone’s apartment, he often listened to the radio interviews of Terry Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air. Today, he admits to dreaming about being interviewed by Gross. He remembers well what it was like to be an unknown. It wasn’t fun.

In a recent interview (of course it was with Terry Gross) Sedaris was asked how his present life contrasted with the nobody’s life he lived for so long. He now goes on tours across the continent where people line up to get his autograph on books they’ve just bought, he tells his stories on the BBC, he’s delivered a convocation address at Princeton University. Was this acclaim, Gross asked him on air, what he had in mind all along? Of course, Sedaris said, this is exactly what he dreamt of from the beginning. It should happen just that way to every nobody.

Today he can’t imagine that there was anyone else who so badly wanted fame. For that reason or some other, he was miserable. He drank enough to qualify as an alcoholic, and did drugs as well. He considered suicide and wrote in his diary a list of reasons why life was (or perhaps could be) worth living. Finally, by good luck, he found a way to market his working life, his personality and his sense of humour. He was on stage in an obscure Chicago club, reading excerpts from his diary, when Ira Glass of NPR heard him. At that point, he said recently, “My life just changed completely, like someone waved a magic wand.” Sedaris had briefly played an elf in Macy’s department store at Christmas. His talk about that experience, Santaland Diaries,

The Santaland Diaries Director's Notes Welcome back to a very Merry Santaland Diaries! It is an honor to bring this tradition back to ZACH, which goes back to 1998, six years after David Sedaris first catapulted his career when first reading his essay on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition in 1992. We have done many wonderful productions under the incredible direction of Dave Steakley and Abe Reybold, most of which were played by the incredibly talented Martin Burke. While I have big shoes to fill, I’m excited to have been passed the torch and get a chance to work with the very talented Jimmy Moore and Kevin Pellicone to find our own take on this iconic show. It is also great to have this veteran and design team who's creativity helps bring the story to life. While the holidays are meant to evoke cheer and merriment, it is also good to laugh at ourselves and the things that make us a little bitter or on edge. We all experience the holidays many different ways. Some are lucky to be with the ones they love, some are obligated to be with the ones they love not as much. Many have to work long hours to support their family, and some are alone this time of year. No matter how you experience the holidays, it is great that we can get together in a dark room and laugh about it all. It is this laughter that reminds us that we are together and we are connected, though good and bitter times. Thank you for being here and being a part of this Austin tradition. Now, please, grab a drink and enjoy the show!

ZACH Leadership

DAVE STEAKLEY (Producing Artistic Director) is now in his 29th season, and is dedicated to creating a theatre of, by and for Austin. Led by Dave’s vision, the creation of the Topfer Theatre came to fruition, opening in October 2012 with the acclaimed musical Ragtime. Dave is committed to a dialogue that is inclusive, because other voices and other perspectives enrich our lives, and help us to become more empathic and thoughtful people. He relishes the opportunity to engage our Central Texas region in a lively, meaningful dialogue to cultivate a greater sense of community for everyone who calls Austin home. Dave envisions ZACH as the meeting tent where our community gathers because it has investment, ownership, and representation in our creative work. With Dave as artistic leader, ZACH has produced multiple World Premieres by Terrence McNally, Anna Deavere Smith, Steven Dietz, Jaston Williams, Everett Quinton, John Walch, Allen Robertson, and The Flaming Idiots. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. Dave created the first bilingual adaptation of Webber and Rice’s musical Jesucristo Superstar, and set The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Katrina-ravaged New Orleans with a jazz/R&B reinvention, which received national acclaim from The New York Times. Dave has directed many ZACH productions, and some favorite experiences include: The Ballad of Klook and Vinette; Notes From the Field; Sunday in the Park with George; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time; The Great Society; All the Way; Disney's Mary Poppins; Tribes; Mothers and Sons; The Who’s Tommy; The Gospel at Colonus; Next to Normal; August: Osage County; Rent; Metamorphoses; Caroline, or Change; The Clean House; Take Me Out; Crowns; Omnium-Gatherum; Jelly’s Last Jam; The America Play; Dreamgirls; Angels in America; and the first professional repertory production of The Laramie Project, and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. His regional directing credits include Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, New Stage Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, WaterTower Theatre, and Pittsburgh’s City Theatre. He is the playwright of ZACH’s A Christmas Carol, Rockin’ Christmas Party, and Keepin’ It Weird, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and American Theatre. Dave has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, Texas Medal of the Arts, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. The City of Austin Mayor declared, May 18, 2001 and October 22, 2011 as “Dave Steakley Day” on the occasion of his 10th and 20th ZACH Anniversaries. He is the recipient of the 2015 First Tee of Greater Austin Courtesy Award, the 2013 Human Rights Campaign Austin Visibility Award, 2010 Kick Ass Award, 2005 Austin Circle of Theaters’ “Outstanding Contribution to Austin Theatre” Award, eight Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin Best Stage Director” awards, the 2000 Austin Under 40 Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Award. In 2009, he was crowned Austin Dancing with the Stars Champion, and he has a cameo in Richard Linklater’s film Bernie. 48

ZACH Leadership

Photo: KirkTuck.com

ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) just completed her 12th year at ZACH Theatre as Managing Director, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built, and opened the Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread acclaim, completing the largest capital campaign in the theatre’s history and transforming ZACH’s role in both Austin and the national theatre landscape. Other accomplishments during her dozen years at ZACH include the creation of a multi-year strategic plan that is moving the organization into the next phase of its commitment to new work, increasing revenue from ticket sales by 165%, and growing annual contributed revenue by 199%. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to more than $10 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure! Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. 2019–20 Season The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show January 18–April 26, 2020 | The Kleberg

Roe April 8–May 3, 2020 | The Topfer

Created by Jonathan Rockefeller Based on the books by Eric Carle Directed by Shannon Fox

Written by Lisa Loomer

At age 27, Austin attorney Sarah Weddington won the landmark 1973 case Roe v Wade that legalized abortion, making her the youngest person to ever successfully argue a case before the Supreme Court. A national debate ensued, and a divide in America endures over this controversial issue. What most people don’t know is that after the case, Ms. Weddington and Norma McCorvey, “Jane Roe” the plaintiff, took divergent life paths that reflect this complicated polarization in our culture. Poignant, surprising, and with unexpected humor, Roe illuminates the difficult choices women make and the passion each side has for its cause.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar and his menagerie of animal friends have arrived at ZACH! Little ones will go wide-eyed with excitement as they recite along to their favorite Eric Carle classics like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, 10 Little Rubber Ducks, and The Very Lonely Firefly. Each story is brought to life by an array of faithfully recreated puppets that will enchant and engage both adults and children as they leap off the page and onto the stage.

A Night with Janis Joplin January 29–March 8, 2020 | The Topfer

Reunion ‘85 May 27–June 28, 2020 | The Topfer at ZACH

Created, Written, and Directed by Randy Johnson Original Choreography by Patricia Wilcox Musical Direction by Allen Robertson Starring Mary Bridget Davies

Created by Susan Draus, David Larson, and Cody Jamison Strand In collaboration with Becca Anderson and Dan Marshall Directed by Dave Steakley Musical Direction by Allen Robertson

The legendary queen of rock-n-roll, Janis Joplin, explodes onto the stage in a concert experience that celebrates the Texas musical marvel, and shines a spotlight on the trailblazing female blues and soul vocalists who influenced her. Starring Broadway's Tony®-nominated Mary Bridget Davies (who originated the role) A Night with Janis Joplin is packed with enduring hits like “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Mercedes Benz,” and “Summertime,” plus hit songs by icons Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Etta James, and more. It’s sure to take a little piece of your heart!

We got the beat! It’s YOUR 1985 class reunion. Party back to when we were living in a material world of scrunchies, shoulder pads, and parachute pants. Reunion ‘85 is a totally immersive concert experience that starts when the Reunion Committee welcomes you with your name tag and new identity. Whether Pretty in Pink or Risky Business, Preppy or New Wave, discover who you were back in the day. Grab a funky cold medina, cut footloose to the live band rocking the 80’s hits, and party all night long with the class of 1985. It’s the time of your life!

Every Brilliant Thing February 5–March 29, 2020 | The Whisenhunt By Duncan Macmillan, with Jonny Donahoe Directed by Nat Miller Starring Martin Burke

The Sound of Music July 15–September 6, 2020 | The Topfer

A boy sets out to count his blessings one-by-one and list every single special, ordinary thing about living to lift his Mom’s spirit. The love list flourishes as he matures to adulthood, and when life deals a bitter blow, it proves valuable in ways he could never have predicted. Hilarious and uplifting, Every Brilliant Thing is an interactive, improvisational play about life, loss, and the lengths we’ll go to for the ones we love.

Music by Richard Rodgers Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse Suggested by “The Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp Directed by Dave Steakley Musical Direction by Allen Robertson Choreography by Jen Young Mahlstedt

Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch February 29–April 4, 2020 | The Whisenhunt

The hills are alive in this immersive re-imagining of the beloved classic! You will hear the Tony, Grammy, and Oscarwinning score presented with updated arrangements, lending a new sound to old favorites like “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and “Climb Every Mountain.” Maria’s sunny nature and passion for music brings joy and laughter back to the Von Trapp family, and melts the Captain’s heart. Love triumphs, and light wins in the darkest of times.

Book and Music by Allen Robertson Based on the book by Eileen Spinelli Directed by Allen Robertson Musical Direction by Allen Robertson

From the Emmy Award-winning creator of The Biscuit Brothers and Tortoise and Hare comes a world premiere musical based on the beloved children’s book. Mr. Hatch is a lonely man leading a ho-hum life, until one Valentine’s Day he receives a note that reads “Somebody loves you”... and everything changes. With a contemporary score and playful audience interaction, Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch is a funny, heartwarming story celebrating friendship, acceptance, and self-esteem that will delight all ages.
