CHANEL* Klook ......................................................................................................................................... RODERICK SANFORD* CHANEL (Vinette) – ZACH: Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill (Billie Holiday), Raconteur in Sophisticated Ladies, followed by the Ghost of Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol and a Diva in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, for which she won Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. Chanel was raised in the rich musical environs of New Orleans, Louisiana, and grew up singing in churches and alongside jazz greats in the music halls of the French Quarter. Discovered by Quincy Jones while she was still a teenager, CHANEL became a founding member of the gospel trio, Trinitee 5:7. The girl group spent almost two decades entertaining audiences on four continents in arenas ranging from Madison Square Garden to the Staples Center to England’s Wembley Stadium. As lead singer of Trinitee 5:7, CHANEL has released seven albums and has received two Grammy nominations and won two Dove awards. Her albums have sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide; her first album went Platinum and spent almost 50 weeks on Billboard’s top R&B albums chart, while both of her first two albums debuted at #1 on the Billboard Gospel chart. In addition to performing with Destiny’s Child and TLC at the BET awards, CHANEL also shared the stage with Aretha Franklin at the 50th Anniversary Grammy Awards show. CHANEL currently lives in Berkeley, California with her husband, Dr. Gregory Schwartz and her two sons Alexander Von Schwartz and Zion Schwartz.

The Ballad of Klook and Vinette Director's Notes

Ché Walker

Anoushka Lucas

In the fall of 2017, I attended the National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) New Musical Festival with my ZACH Theatre colleagues and Trustees. There was a reading of a new work called Klook’s Last Stand, and I felt myself drawn into this hypnotic, poetic world that reminded me of the writing of my favorite contemporary singer, Jill Scott. The prose in the storytelling melded seamlessly into the music, and the story focused on an adult romance, passionate and messy, wrapped in elevated, evocative, and at times, erotic language. The musical’s form and content was different from anything I had ever experienced in a contemporary musical, but it is something I have often experienced from neo-soul artists like Erykah Badu, India.Arie and Ms. Scott in concert. After the reading, I met one-half of the composer team Anoushka Lucas, a young soulful British singer-songwriter, who wrote all of the music for the female character Vinette. The music for the male character, Klook, was written by Omar Lye-Fook, who is an established British soul singer. The two were paired together by the book writer Ché Walker, an English actor, playwright, and theatre director who conceived the idea for this unique musical collaboration. While there have been other notable male/female writing teams like Aherns and Flaherty (Ragtime, Once on this Island), and Betty Comden and Adolph Green (Singin’ in the Rain, On the Town), this is the first time I’m aware that a team has written specifically for the character of their own gender, to give the character an authenticity of expression.

Omar Lyefook

When I watch a new work I am always casting the play as I watch it, which I think most directors do. I kept hearing Roderick Sanford’s voice, who has been onstage performing at ZACH for 25 years, as Klook, and Chanel, who has been in the ZACH family of artists for the past four years, as Vinette. Both of these artists move easily between the theatre and a concert stage, and can be found fronting bands on occasion, which is a style this work requires. I’m delighted that these two ZACH audience favorites are premiering this brand new musical for you. They are also debuting a brand new song just written for this show, which is being performed in the musical for the very first time. ZACH is making an increased commitment to the development and creation of new musicals and plays. This new musical was preceded this season by the first regional production of Anna Deavere Smith’s Notes From the Field, and it will be followed by the world premiere of legendary American playwright Terrence McNally’s latest play Immortal Longings. Theatre is a collaborative art form, and new work can't be properly developed without you, the audience, engaging in it and responding to it. We are excited about this moment, as well as what the future holds in store for us, in our new artistic explorations with you.

DAVE STEAKLEY (Producing Artistic Director) is now in his 28th season, and is dedicated to creating a theatre of, by and for Austin. Led by Dave’s vision, the creation of the Topfer Theatre came to fruition, opening in October 2012 with the acclaimed musical Ragtime. Dave is committed to a dialogue that is inclusive, because other voices and other perspectives enrich our lives, and help us to become more empathic and thoughtful people. He relishes the opportunity to engage our Central Texas region in a lively, meaningful dialogue to cultivate a greater sense of community for everyone who calls Austin home. Dave envisions ZACH as the meeting tent where our community gathers because it has investment, ownership, and representation in our creative work. With Dave as artistic leader, ZACH has produced multiple World Premieres by Anna Deavere Smith, Steven Dietz, Jaston Williams, Everett Quinton, John Walch, Allen Robertson, and The Flaming Idiots. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. Dave created the first bilingual adaptation of Webber and Rice’s musical Jesucristo Superstar, and set The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Katrinaravaged New Orleans with a jazz/R&B reinvention, which received national acclaim from The New York Times. Dave has directed many ZACH productions, and some favorite experiences include: Once; Sunday in the Park with George; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime; The Great Society; All the Way; Disney's Mary Poppins; Tribes; Mothers and Sons; The Who’s Tommy; The Gospel at Colonus; Next to Normal; August: Osage County; RENT; Metamorphoses; Caroline, or Change; The Clean House; Take Me Out; Crowns; OmniumGatherum; Jelly’s Last Jam; The America Play; Dreamgirls; Angels in America; and the first professional repertory production of The Laramie Project, and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. His regional directing credits include Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, New Stage Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, WaterTower Theatre, and Pittsburgh’s City Theatre. He is the playwright of ZACH’s A Christmas Carol, Rockin’ Christmas Party, and Keepin’ It Weird, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and American Theatre. Dave has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, Texas Medal of the Arts, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. The City of Austin Mayor declared, May 18, 2001 and October 22, 2011 as “Dave Steakley Day” on the occasion of his 10th and 20th ZACH Anniversaries. ZACH Leadership

ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) just completed her 10th year at ZACH Theatre as Managing Director, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built, and opened the new Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread acclaim completing the largest capital campaign in ZACH’s history. In August 2014, ZACH celebrated the successful conclusion of the $23.5M campaign. Other accomplishments during her ten years at ZACH include the creation of a new multi-year strategic plan that is moving the organization into the next phase of its significant expansion, increasing revenue from single ticket sales by 157 percent and grown revenue from season ticket sales by 139 percent. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to more than $10 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure! Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She led Montalvo’s growth from a small, communitybased organization into a major presenting venue and home to an internationally acclaimed Artists’ Residency Program. During nearly two decades at Montalvo, her other accomplishments included increasing ticket sales from less than $500,000 to more than $4 million, expanding the patron base from 6,000 to 80,000 and raising more than $20 million for capital projects. Earlier in her career, Elisbeth served as Administrative Director for the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Education/Outreach Director of the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf and as department chair and faculty member of the performing arts department of The Purnell School in New Jersey. Elisbeth graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama and Musical Theatre. She attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program, The Center for Excellence in Nonprofit Management Leaders Institute in San Jose, California and served in leadership roles for the American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Saratoga Rotary Club, and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. She has been honored by San Jose Magazine, the Austin Business Journal, and the State of California for her work in the arts. Elisbeth is the current President of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre in New York City, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the creation, development, production, and presentation of new and classic musicals. She has been a panelist for The Houston Arts Alliance, City of Austin, National Alliance for Musical Theatre, National Fund for New Musicals, and Theatre Communications Group. Elisbeth has always had a passion for the theatre and performed for many years in summer stock, dinner theatre, and semi-professional productions on the East Coast and in California. 47

Holiday Add-On Shows Roe April 8–May 3, 2020 The Topfer

A Christmas Carol November 20–December 29, 2019 The Topfer

Written by Lisa Loomer

At age 27, Austin attorney Sarah Weddington won the landmark 1973 case Roe v Wade that legalized abortion, making her the youngest person to ever successfully argue a case before the Supreme Court. A national debate ensued, and a divide in America endures over this controversial issue. What most people don’t know is that after the case, Ms. Weddington and Norma McCorvey, “Jane Roe” the plaintiff, took divergent life paths that reflect this complicated polarization in our culture. Poignant, surprising, and with unexpected humor, Roe illuminates the difficult choices women make and the passion each side has for its cause.

Reunion ‘85 May 27–June 28, 2020 The Topfer at ZACH

By Charles Dickens Conceived and adapted by Dave Steakley Directed by Dave Steakley Music Direction by Allen Robertson

Austin’s most rockin’ holiday tradition returns to make merry with new music and surprises to get the party started. ZACH’s inspired adaptation of the Dickens’ classic is a musical sleigh ride through rhythm and time, infusing the traditional Victorian story with a score that spans all genres and eras. This family-friendly spectacular creates an infectious spirit that has everyone dancing in the aisles. Celebrate the season with the loving Cratchit family and three soulful ghosts as they take Ebenezer Scrooge on a joyride to rediscover his heart and love for human kindness.

The Santaland Diaries November 27–December 29, 2019 The Whisenhunt

Created by Susan Draus, David Larson, and Cody Jamison Strand in collaboration with Becca Anderson and Dan Marshall

We got the beat! It’s YOUR 1985 class reunion. Party back to when we were living in a material world of scrunchies, shoulder pads, and parachute pants. Reunion ‘85 is a totally immersive concert experience that starts when the Reunion Committee welcomes you with your name tag and new identity. Whether Pretty in Pink or Risky Business, Preppy or New Wave, discover who you were back in the day. Grab a funky cold medina, cut footloose to the live band rocking the 80’s hits, and party all night long with the class of 1985. It’s the time of your life!

The Sound of Music July 15–September 6, 2020 The Topfer

By David Sedaris Adapted by Joe Mantello Directed by Nat Miller Starring J. Robert “Jimmy” Moore

David Sedaris’ ever-irreverent and cynical Crumpet returns! The outlandish tale of a Macy’s elf merrily jingles to life in this holiday cult-classic. Crumpet sarcastically expounds on the talent it takes to juggle tinsel, tearful tots, and eccentric Santas at the most wonderful time of the year. With a pre-show cabaret on weeknights, and 75 minutes of rollicking (and not so politically-correct) fun, this laugh-‘til-you-spill-your-cocktail evening will delight adult elves who like it more naughty than nice!

Holiday Heroes December 7–14, 2019 The Topfer

Music by Richard Rodgers Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse Suggested by “The Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp

Written and Directed by Shaun Wainwright Branigan and Jerome Schoolar

The hills are alive in this intimate, heartfelt re-imagining of the beloved musical classic! Maria’s sunny nature and passion for music brings joy and laughter back to the Von Trapp family, and melts the Captain’s cold heart. Your spirits will soar to the Tony, Grammy, and Oscar-winning score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Every Mountain,” and, of course, the title song. Love triumphs, and light wins over the darkest of times.

51

Kids of all ages can’t get enough of this hilarious singalong. In this ZACH holiday tradition, Rufus and Ernie get caught up in their usual musical shenanigans and celebrate seasonal traditions from around the world. A joyous, toe-tapping good time, Holiday Heroes gives a glimpse of how other cultures share good tidings, including Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, and more. With daytime performances, it’s the perfect way to make merry with the whole family.

Individual Contributors ZACH Theatre thanks the following individuals and family foundations for their generous gifts to support the work on our stages and in the community. This list reflects individual contributions to our Annual Fund from April 1, 2018 to April 1, 2019. To join our family of supporters, please contact Brittney Woolley at 512-476-0594 x270, or email bwoolley@zachtheatre.org. The Great Scotts are a group of individuals and couples who substantially support ZACH Theatre with annual gifts of $1,500 or more. The enhanced financial commitment made by the Great Scotts enables ZACH to bring important culture opportunities to our Central Texas community, and in turn through year round social events and behind-the-scenes activities, the Great Scotts have a tremendous amount of fun! We deeply appreciate and thank our current Great Scotts and annual fund members.

Preorder your drinks at the bar, and they will be waiting for you at intermission and postshow. Our bars accept all major credit cards, and you may run a tab during your visit. ZACH’s lounges and bars offer a selection of wines, cocktails, and craft beers. Our Kleberg and Topfer bars offer a wide range of liquor selections including our popular wells and single malt scotches. Gourmet appetizer plates and small bites are also available.
