About the Artistic Team STEPHANIE BUSING (Scenic and Projection Designer) is a video projection and scenic designer for live performances and spaces. She graduated from the University of Texas with an M.F.A. in Theatrical Design: Integrated Media in 2014 and now designs for theatre, dance, opera, musicals, exhibits, and symphonies. Recent designs include: Disney's Mary Poppins (video, ZACH), Into the Wild (video/scenery, Encore Musical Theatre), Wanderlust Dance VC in Basque Country (video, ZAWP), Flight and Fall (exhibit, UMLAUF), Ragtime (video, Grand Rapids Civic Theatre), and In the Heights (scenery/video, Croswell Opera House). Stephanie has been designing and painting with ZACH since 2012, and honored to be designing one of her favorite plays for the Topfer Stage.

Several months ago I saw a documentary about a scientist named Robert Lang who worked as an engineer designing lasers for NASA spacecraft. In his work, he turned to origami, the Japanese art of folding paper without making any cuts, as a means to figure out difficult design solutions for NASA rockets. He was designing objects that could be compactly folded inside the cylinder of a rocket and then unfold once in space to meet a variety of needs; this technology also informed how our car airbags are designed.
artistic project. He is building individual molecule lanterns, which are added to a hanging origami light sculpture, that represents Christopher's very favorite thing, a constellation of stars. I love great storytelling told from the perspective of a person who is very different from my life experience. It helps me become more empathetic and thoughtful, and to appreciate the uniqueness of each individual. This play has brought me into conversations with extraordinary persons in our community with autism, who truly possess superpowers. Autism can often be seen in terms of a deficit, what is lost, rather than what is gained. Christopher has an urgent need to see the world as orderly, and he has a very low tolerance for disorder. He relies on logic to understand and navigate the world, but unfortunately for him, his story becomes more chaotic and uncertain as it progresses. In these times, we wake up each day to a new level of unpredictability, in our country and in our lives. It can feel very unsettling for many of us who are seeking to make sense of what is happening, as new events unfold. You may relate to Christopher's anxiety and need for order, and I hope his story will encourage you to be brave, and push through the fear to find new levels of personal triumph.
This real-life math-scientist genius instantly connected me to Christopher, the 15 year old detective and math-science savant in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Christopher aspires to be an astronaut exploring the galaxy, connecting to the complexity of our starry universe, which brings him such peace and joy. Paper is very important in this play's storytelling, and it manifests in pivotal moments in Christopher's life, including: the Sherlock Holmes inspired book that Christopher is writing, the detective notebook he carries with him to record evidence in the death of his neighbor's dog Wellington, the multitude of unopened letters from his mother that he discovers, and his crucial defining challenge – the "A level" math exam. In ZACH's production, we have been inspired by Mr. Lang's origami in our approach to the scenic and projection designs you will see on stage, and many of the props connected to Christopher will be made of paper, including the dog Wellington. Throughout the play you will see Christopher folding paper and working on his personal

Sensory Friendly Performances at ZACH
ZACH Theatre has always made inclusivity a mainstay of our productions. To continue this tradition, we have created a sensory-friendly performance. A sensory-friendly performance is specifically geared toward people or groups on the autism spectrum. The term “sensory friendly” is a common term for events and experiences at theaters and museums. For ZACH’s performance: • We will make environmental alterations including lighting, sound, and more relaxed house rules. • We will use glow sticks to indicate where potentially loud noises, big movements, or changes may occur. • Groups will have more space to spread out in the theatre before, during, and after the performance. • Groups will be allowed to come and go as needed during the performance. • We will provide quiet space in the lobby or on our plaza (should weather cooperate).

DAVE STEAKLEY (Producing Artistic Director) is now in his 27th season, and is dedicated to creating a theatre of, by and for Austin – a place where our entire community gathers to share an intimate and extraordinary theatre experience. Led by Dave’s vision, the creation of the Topfer Theatre came to fruition, opening in October 2012 with the acclaimed musical Ragtime. Anna Deavere Smith says, “Dave is the future. The YES in his theater’s walls is as palpable as the walls themselves. That YES, I believe, will lead to something brand new, to connect with a broader, more global audience.” With Dave as artistic leader, ZACH has produced multiple World Premieres by Anna Deavere Smith, Steven Dietz, Jaston Williams, Everett Quinton, John Walch, Allen Robertson and The Flaming Idiots. ZACH served as the Central Texas hub of the nationwide 365 Plays/365 Days Festival by Suzan-Lori Parks. Dave created the first bilingual adaptation of Webber and Rice’s musical Jesucristo Superstar, and set The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in Katrinaravaged New Orleans with a jazz/R&B reinvention, which received national acclaim from The New York Times and about which Todd Gershwin says, “It was Dave’s creative production of Porgy and Bess that really opened my eyes to the need to finally allow a creative team to interpret the opera in a fresh manner, which led to the recent Broadway production.” Dave has directed many ZACH productions, and some favorite experiences include: Million Dollar Quartet, The Great Society, Disney's Mary Poppins, Tribes, Mothers and Sons, All the Way, A Christmas Carol: A Rockin’ New Musical, The Who’s Tommy; The Gospel at Colonus; Harvey; 33 Variations; Ragtime; Next to Normal; Hairspray; August: Osage County; RENT; Metamorphoses; Our Town; Caroline, or Change; The Clean House; Take Me Out; I Am My Own Wife; Urinetown; Crowns; Omnium-Gatherum; Hedwig; Jelly’s Last Jam; The America Play; Dreamgirls; Angels in America and the first professional repertory production of The Laramie Project, and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. His regional directing credits include Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, New Stage Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, WaterTower Theatre, and Pittsburgh’s City Theatre. He is the playwright of ZACH’s A Christmas Carol, Rockin’ Christmas Party, and Keepin’ It Weird, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and American Theatre. Dave serves as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. City of Austin Mayors Kirk Watson and Lee Leffingwell declared, respectively, May 18, 2001 and October 22, 2011 as “Dave Steakley Day” on the occasion of his 10th and 20th ZACH Anniversaries. He is the recipient of the 2015 First Tee of Greater Austin Courtesy Award, the 2013 Human Rights Campaign Austin Visibility Award, 2010 Kick Ass Award, 2005 Austin Circle of Theaters’ “Outstanding Contribution to Austin Theatre” Award, seven Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin Best Stage Director” awards, the 2000 Austin Under 40 Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Award, and multiple Austin Critics’ Table and B. Iden Payne Awards for “Outstanding Director/Choreographer.” In 2009, he was crowned Austin Dancing with the Stars Champion, and he has a cameo in Richard Linklater’s 2012 film Bernie with Jack Black. 54

ELISBETH CHALLENER (Managing Director) is celebrating her 10th year at ZACH Theatre as Managing Director, with responsibility for strategic planning, management, finances, marketing, and fundraising for the organization. Under Elisbeth’s leadership, ZACH successfully designed, built, and opened the new Topfer Theatre, which has won significant awards and widespread acclaim completing the largest capital campaign in ZACH’s history. In August 2014, ZACH celebrated the successful conclusion of the $23.5M campaign. Other accomplishments during her ten years at ZACH include the creation of a new multi-year strategic plan that is moving the organization into the next phase of its significant expansion, increasing revenue from single ticket sales by 157 percent and grown revenue from season ticket sales by 139 percent. At a time when many arts organizations in Austin and around the nation have been struggling, ZACH has grown its operating budget from $3 million to more than $9 million dollars and has operated “in the black” throughout Elisbeth’s tenure! Elisbeth has led her team in developing innovative new offerings on ZACH’s expanded campus including full-service bars and nightly pre-show entertainment; an exclusive skyline lounge in the Topfer Theatre for donors; and making the theatre available as a red-carpet venue for SXSW, The Daily Show, as well as other major community events. Several years ago, ZACH proudly launched The Dave Steakley Dream Fund designed to enhance the artistic vision of ZACH’s Producing Artistic Director and to maintain production quality and the facility needs of ZACH’s Topfer Theatre and campus. Before moving to Austin, Elisbeth was Executive Director of Montalvo Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. She led Montalvo’s growth from a small, communitybased organization into a major presenting venue and home to an internationally acclaimed Artists’ Residency Program. During nearly two decades at Montalvo, her other accomplishments included increasing ticket sales from less than $500,000 to more than $4 million, expanding the patron base from 6,000 to 80,000 and raising more than $20 million for capital projects. Earlier in her career, Elisbeth served as Administrative Director for the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Education/Outreach Director of the Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf and as department chair and faculty member of the performing arts department of The Purnell School in New Jersey. Elisbeth graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama and Musical Theatre. She attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program, The Center for Excellence in Nonprofit Management Leaders Institute in San Jose, California and served in leadership roles for the American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Saratoga Rotary Club, and the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. She has been honored by San Jose Magazine, the Austin Business Journal, and the State of California for her work in the arts. Elisbeth currently serves on the Board of Directors and is President Elect of the National Alliance of Musical Theatre in New York, and has served on NAMT’s Festival of New Musicals Committee and Executive Committee. She has been a panelist for The Houston Arts Alliance, City of Austin, National Alliance of Musical Theatre, National Fund for New Musicals, and Theatre Communications Group. Elisbeth has always had a passion for the theatre and performed for many years in summer stock, dinner theatre, and semi-professional productions on the East Coast and in California. 55

Latecomers and Seating At show time, all empty seats are released back to the house to seat those patrons on stand-by. If you are running late to your performance, phone the Box Office so that we are aware that you are on your way and can hold your seats. Any patron arriving after curtain will be seated at the discretion of House Management. Our ushers will show you to your seat, if it’s easily accessible. If the seat is not accessible, you will be shown to an available seat at a break. At intermission, you’re welcome to relocate to your ticketed seat location.
Special Needs A Box Office Associate will be pleased to assist you with any special seating needs when you purchase your tickets. We have wheelchair and limited mobility seating in all of our theatres, and provide accessible restrooms, entry doors, and walkways. To access the second-level Serra Skyline Lounge in the Topfer Theatre, you many use the elevator located in the lobby. Assisted listening devices are available at the Box Office free of charge. For more information about any of these services, please contact the Box Office at 512-476-0541.
Drinks and Dining ZACH’s bars and lounges open 90 minutes prior to show time. The Topfer lounge remains open post-show for an opportunity to meet and mingle with the cast. Preorder your drinks at the bar, and they will be waiting for you at intermission and postshow. Our bars accept all major credit cards, and you may run a tab during your visit. ZACH’s lounges and bars offer a selection of wines, cocktails, and craft beers. Our Kleberg and Topfer bars offer a wide range of liquor selections including our popular wells and single malt scotches. Gourmet appetizer plates and small bites are also available.
Transportation ZACH’s Box Office staff will happily assist you in arranging a taxi for post-show.

A World Apart, A Moment Together One World & TRIAD funds of the San Antonio Area Foundation Connecting Central Texas Military Families One World’s innovative performing arts summer camp program provided scholarships through TRIAD funds of the San Antonio Area Foundation to give kids the opportunity to be a part of the musical production of “Wizard of Oz.” When the campers took the stage every parent, no matter where they were located, including Iraq was able to see their child perform. Using amazing video technology generously provided by a partnership with LifeSize Communications, seven military bases were connected to One World Theatre, so that parent and child could see, talk and interact with each other as if they were in the same room. After the performance, each child and their family was given the opportunity to talk privately with their loved one, keeping the bond of family alive across the miles.
