It is smart to look into how to properly take care of an animal before deciding to make a commitment to owning one. Dogs have different needs than birds, and for that matter different breeds of dogs will have different needs than other breeds, and the same is true for most animal types. A person, or at least a well informed person, wouldn't expect a salt water fish to thrive in a fresh water guppy bowl. When it comes to considering an iguana as a pet, they are no exception. The most popular pet iguana in the United States appears to be the green iguana. Some common things to think about when it comes to iguana care, are what type of cage or habitat does the pet iguana need. A good rule of thumb in iguana care, is that the cage should be three times the length of the pet iguana, and the cage's height should be four times the iguana's length. Baby iguanas usually start off in a cage that is seven feet long. Another important factor in iguana care is that iguanas must have sunlight and humidity. This makes a place like southern Florida an excellent location for the pet iguana. However, a person can create the environment necessary for proper iguana care by purchasing lights specially made for reptiles and purchasing a humidifier. But, honestly, the best environment for an iguana is one that is uncomfortably hot and humid to most humans, so this is something to keep in mind. Another important aspect of iguana care is what to feed the pet iguana. Luckily, their diet is not too exotic, green leafy vegetables are best, things like green cabbage, kale, collard greens, and the dandelion flower. And, just like with many other animals it's a good idea to keep a pet iguana's nails clipped, in fact one can use clippers that are designed for a dog or cat to do this. A few other things to keep in mind regarding iguana care, is that iguana's do carry Salmonella bacteria, so it's not a good idea to have young children clean their cages, and a person should always wash their hands after handling an iguana or cleaning their cage. Also, an iguana doesn't do better in a team, it prefers to be the only iguana on the premises.
