Fall 2017

Publisher’s Letter

In writing the texts for this catalog, I notice that my colleagues and I reach for one word more often than any other: beautiful. Beauty is a freighted word, loaded with cultural baggage, tinged with sentimentality, and tainted by its cousins fashion and glamour—artist and critic friends I know shy away from it completely. The late, great architect Michael Graves, and my professor at architecture school, didn’t have any such hesitations about beauty: I think he would’ve agreed with the Irish poet John O’Donohue’s definition of it as something in whose presence we feel more alive. Graves surrounded himself with beauty, in his paintings, product designs, and architecture, in the art and artifacts that filled his house, and even in the hospital equipment and wheelchairs he created after a paralyzing disease made him a spokesperson for accessible design. His creations were life-giving and brought pleasure, not only to him but also to millions of people who used or visited them. I’m proud to publish his biography, Design for Life. We all have connections to books in our lives that make us feel more alive, whether they seem to have been written directly to us, or are particularly pleasing to hold and read, or, sometimes, a combination of both. These are the kinds of books we strive to make here at Princeton Architectural Press, and I think you’ll find this catalog full of them, unapologetically beautiful books that will speak to you and are a pleasure just to pick up and look through. Increasingly, our books encourage you to create your own beauty, whether it’s whittling a fishhook from a branch, folding an elaborate origami starburst, building a dollhouse, starting a data visualization correspondence with a friend, or even making your own books, whether blank journals, or bound poems you tapped out on your Olivetti typewriter. Whether by inspiration or gentle instruction, these books, and all our books, will bring, I hope, moments of pleasure and beauty into your lives.

The definitive biography of the iconic designer

Michael Graves Design for Life Ian Volner Bio gr a ph Y & a rc h i t ec t u r e — October 2017 6.5 x 9.5 in / 16.5 x 24 cm 304 pp / 100 color & b+w Hardcover 978-1-61689-563-1 $30.00 / £21.99 R i g h ts: Wo rld 53000 9 781616 895631

One of the most prominent and prolific designers and architects of the late twentieth century, Michael Graves is best known for his popular product designs, including the world-famous Alessi whistling-bird teakettle, and controversial buildings, such as the Portland Building in Oregon, Humana Building in Kentucky, and Dolphin and Swan Hotels at Walt Disney World, Florida. Graves was widely seen as the leading voice of postmodernist architecture, which reintroduced human scale, color, and, sometimes, playful forms into the stark white vocabulary of modernism. Following a devastating illness that paralyzed him from the chest down, Graves became a tireless designer and advocate of improved health-care products and facilities before his sudden death in 2015. Shortly before this, he began a series of interviews with journalist Ian Volner, which form the basis of this biography of a remarkable designer. Volner also conducted numerous interviews with Graves’s family, patrons, colleagues, and friends. What emerges is a meticulously researched, anecdote-rich human story, as well as a primer on the American architecture scene of the past sixty years and a portrait of a man whose deep passion for his art brought pleasure to millions. Ian Volner has contributed articles on architecture, design, and urbanism to the Wall Street Journal, the New Republic, Harper’s and the New Yorker, and is a contributing editor at Architect and Surface. He is also the author of This Is Frank Lloyd Wright.

This delightful and dramatic collection of portraits reveals birds of prey as we never experience them: intimate and up close, photographed in Traer Scott’s signature style. Seventy spectacular color photos present twenty-five different species, from the familiar to the exotic and endangered: hawks, owls, falcons, a bald eagle, kestrels, a Mississippi Kite, a turkey vulture, and more. Joining their elders are a fluffy baby vulture and adorable baby and juvenile great horned owls. The birds in this remarkable collection emerge as personalities, not just types: wise and quizzical, graceful and enigmatic, serene and fiercely self-possessed. A personal introduction describes Scott’s process and connection to the birds, and captions detail the characteristics and habits of these incredible winged creatures. Traer Scott is the author of eight books of photographs. She lives in Providence, Rhode Island.

San Francisco at its most mysterious

San Francisco Noir Fred Lyon arts & Pho to gr a ph y — October 2017 8.5 x 11 in / 21.6 x 28 cm 224 pp / 200 duotones Hardcover 978-1-61689-651-5 $40.00 / £30.00 R i g h ts: Wo rld 54000 9 781616 896515

Following in the footsteps of classic films like The Maltese Falcon and The Lady from Shanghai, veteran photographer Fred Lyon creates images of San Francisco in high contrast with a sense of mystery. In this latest offering from the photographer of San Francisco: Portrait of a City 1940–1960, Lyon presents a darker tone, exploring the hidden corners of his native city. Images taken in the foggy night are illuminated only by neon signs, classic car headlights, apartment windows, or streetlights. Sharply dressed couples stroll out for evening shows, drivers travel down steep hills, and sailors work through the night at the old Fisherman’s Wharf. Stylistically, many of the photographs are experimental—the noir tone is enhanced by double exposures, elements of collage, and blurred motion. These strikingly evocative duotone images expose a view of San Francisco as only Fred Lyon could capture. Fred Lyon studied under famed photographer Ansel Adams and has been called “San Francisco’s Brassai.” A lifelong resident of San Francisco, he has contributed to numerous fashion, home, and garden magazines. His work has been exhibited in San Francisco at the Museum of Modern Art, the Legion of Honor Museum, and the Leica Gallery, as well as the Art Institute of Chicago, and was the subject of a Life magazine retrospective.

The colorful street signs of Barcelona

Gràfica de les Rambles The Signs of Barcelona Louise Fili gr a ph ic De sign — September 2017 8.5 x 10.5 in / 21.6 x 26.7 cm 264 pp / 375 color & 10 b+w Hardcover 978-1-61689-561-7 $40.00 / £27.99 R i g h ts: Wo rld 54000 9 781616 895617

From the labyrinthine paths and serene squares of the Gothic Quarter to the stunning art nouveau architecture of the Eixample, Barcelona is a place of irresistible charm. Throughout this beloved Catalan city by the sea, dazzling signage is everywhere: glowing mosaics and stained glass, intricately carved stonework and brilliantly gilded placards that herald the city’s eclectic mix of commerce, all documented with affection and a dash of obsession by celebrated graphic designer Louise Fili. Gràfica de les Rambles is Fili’s travelogue and photographic diary of the most striking and inventive signs for restaurants and hotels, farmàcias and pastisserias, the workshops of artisans, and grand department stores. This follow-up to Graphica della Strada: The Signs of Italy and Graphique de la Rue: The Signs of Paris is a love letter to Barcelona and a trove of inspiration. Louise Fili was art director of Pantheon Books before establishing her own studio, Louise Fili Ltd, in 1989. She is a member of the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame and a recipient of medals for lifetime achievement from both the AIGA and the Type Directors Club.

creations since 1966. Although best known for her delicate embroidery, she also makes beautiful nightgowns and bathrobes in a variety of colors, styles, and lush fabrics. This enchanting space, with highly polished floors and rose-garland-frescoed ceilings, features racks of lovely lace christening gowns, flower girl dresses, gossamer blouses, beribboned hats, and smocked outfits. The signature embroidery graces tablecloths, pillows, bedspreads, napkins, and guest towels. Caponi tells of one client who sent over a porcelain dinner plate to have its wisteria design replicated on an oversized tablecloth and napkins. Then there was the rush order for a golf-themed tablecloth that “had us embroidering blades of green grass late into the night.”

Inside, you will find il meglio di Firenze: quite simply, “the best” in fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables, artisan cheeses, salumi, and fragrant crusty bread that the couple routinely picks up from their own baker on the way to the shop each morning. The overflowing antique shelves beautifully showcase artisan pastas, biscotti, jams, sauces, chocolates, olives, crackers, artisan beers, and carefully selected wines (along with the occasional Italian proverb). Quips and quotes from the world’s greatest innovators

The Inventor Says Quotes, Quips, and Words of Wisdom Kevin Lippert V i s ua l & p op u l a r C u lt u r e — October 2017 5 x 7 in / 13 x 18 cm 160 pp / 2-color Hardcover 978-1-61689-622-5 $14.95 / £9.99 R i g h ts: Wo rld 51495 9 781616 896225

The sixth in our popular Words of Wisdom series, The Inventor Says invites readers to a gathering of history’s most brilliant creative minds, where inventors past and present jostle, compete, contradict, and compliment each other. Groundbreakers such as Leonardo da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin, Henry Ford, Ada Lovelace, the Wright Brothers, and Sejong the Great converse with the twentieth century’s most ingenious tinkerers and thinkers, from Buckminster Fuller, Ruth Handler (creator of the Barbie doll), Nikola Tesla (who cuts Thomas Edison down to size for his lack of scientific discipline), and Apple’s Steve Wozniak to contemporary figures like Lisa Seacat DeLuca, IBM’s most prolific female inventor. These intrepid innovators discuss their childhood, inspirations, working habits, failure as a productive stage in the creative process, and much more, in a collection that will inspire readers to hatch a few brilliant ideas of their own. As Edwin Land advised: “Don’t undertake a project unless it is manifestly important and nearly impossible.” Kevin Lippert is founder and publisher of Princeton Architectural Press, and author of War Plan Red.

In their search for an easy technique they could implement in their own home, they came across French artist Émilie Aizier-Brouard’s ingenious Kitchen Lithography, which uses aluminum foil, cola, and oil-based crayons as its main materials, and quickly became ardent fans of and experts in the process, which is eco-friendly, inexpensive, and easy to do. In this book, the first on the subject, they share what they’ve learned through a process of trial and error in an easy-to-follow guide on turning your kitchen into a creative studio. Hand print your own buttons, bags, pillowcases, posters, cards, T-shirts, and labels using simple household ingredients with surprising and bold results. First published in Italy in 1956, Bruno Munari’s In the Darkness of the Night tells the tale of an interconnected, intimate yet expansive journey across three settings—in the darkness, through a meadow, and into a mysterious cave— through a spellbinding combination of paper stocks, transparencies, cutouts, and simple but lively characters. This timeless artist’s book, available in a new English edition, is a must-have for Munari fans, designers, bibliophiles, and lovers of exceptional book design. Bruno Munari (1907–1998) was one of the most groundbreaking and influential designers of the twentieth century. His seventy-year career stretched across the fields of graphic, book, and industrial design; painting, sculpture, film, and photography; literature, poetry, and more, prompting Picasso to call him “the Leonardo of our time.”

Joan Miró’s meditation on creativity

Joan Miró: I Work Like a Gardener Joan Miró, compiled by Yvon Taillandier Foreword by Robert Lubar arts & Pho to gr a ph y — October 2017 5 x 7 in / 12.7 x 17.8 cm 80 pp / 10 color Hardcover 978-1-61689-628-7 $19.95 / £14.99 R i ghts : Wo rld En g lis h 51995 9 781616 896287

In 1958, artist Joan Miró and critic Yvon Taillandier sat down for an in-depth discussion on Miró’s life and work. Their conversation, one of the most illuminating and insightful looks into Miró’s philosophy and creative process, was first published in a limited edition of seventy five copies in 1964. Though long out of print, this bilingual “treasure,” in the words of Maria Popova, “remains the most direct and comprehensive record of Miró’s ideas on art.” This beautiful new edition presents an updated English translation of Miró’s invaluable text in an elegant and striking package. In addition to Taillandier’s original foreword, a new preface by preeminent Miró scholar Robert Lubar provides wider context and insight. An appendix includes the original French text in its entirety. Joan Miró: I Work Like a Gardener brings to life the words and work of one of the most beloved and influential artists of the twentieth century. The world-renowned Catalan artist Joan Miró (1893–1983) is known for his abstract and surrealist paintings, prints, sculptures, and ceramics, characterized by biomorphic forms, geometric shapes, and playful abstracted tableaus. Yvon Taillandier is a French artist, author, and critic who has published extensively on the history of art. Robert Lubar is associate professor of fine arts at New York University, the director of NYU Madrid, and a trustee of the Fundació Joan Miró.

An irreverent history of the ubiquitous typeface

Never Use Futura Douglas Thomas, with a foreword by Ellen Lupton gr a ph ic De sign — October 2017 5.5 x 8 in / 14 x 20.3 cm 208pp / 105 2-color & 67 b+w Paperback 978-1-61689-572-3 $24.95 / £17.99 R i g h ts: Wo rld 52495 9 781616 895723

It’s everywhere, including the moon (on the commemorative plaque left by Apollo 11 astronauts), Nike sneakers, the artworks of Barbara Kruger, Ed Ruscha, and Jenny Holzer, 2001: A Space Odyssey credits, Domino’s Pizza boxes, Absolut Vodka bottles, and Red Bull cans. Richard Nixon used it for his presidential campaign, as did Hillary Clinton. Indeed, Futura is one of the most used fonts in the world today—the typeface of modern design—more so even than Helvetica. This fascinating book explores the cultural history and uses of a face that’s so common you might not notice, until you start looking, and then you can’t escape it. Douglas Thomas traces Futura from its Bauhaus-inspired origin in Paul Renner’s 1924 design, to its current role as the go-to choice for corporate work, logos, motion pictures, and advertisements. Never Use Futura is illuminating, sometimes playful, reading, not just for type nerds, but for anyone interested in how typefaces are used, take on meaning, and become a language of their own. Douglas Thomas is a graphic designer, writer, and historian. He holds an MA in history from the University of Chicago and an MFA in graphic design from the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he also taught. He currently teaches at Brigham Young University. His design work has been featured in Communication Arts, Print magazine, and Graphis.

Essential readings and a manifesto for future design

Graphic Design Discourse Evolving Theories, Ideologies, and Processes of Visual Communication Edited by Henry Hongmin Kim, foreword by Steff Geissbühler gr a ph ic De sign & t h eor y — October 2017 6.125 x 9.25 in / 15.5 x 23.4 cm 480 pp / 18 b+w Paperback 978-1-61689-558-7 $45.00 / £35.00 R i g h ts: Wo rld 54500 9 781616 895587

Hardcover 978-1-61689-639-3 $75.00 / £55.00

If the aim of graphic design is to communicate meaning clearly, there’s an irony that the field itself has struggled between two contradictory opposites: rote design resulting from a rigorous, fixed set of rules, and eccentric design that expresses the hand of the artist but fails to communicate with its audience. But what if designers focused on process and critical analysis over visual outcome? Through a carefully selected collection of more than seventy-five seminal texts spanning centuries and bridging the disciplines of art, architecture, design history, philosophy, and cultural theory, Graphic Design Discourse: Evolving Theories, Ideologies, and Processes of Visual Communication establishes a new paradigm for graphic design methodologies for the twenty-first century. This illuminating anthology is essential reading for practicing designers, educators, and students trying to understand how to design in a singular, expressive way without forgoing clear and concise visual communication.

Enrique Norten is often hailed as Mexico’s most dynamic architect, but, with several new buildings in the United States, he might more properly be called one of the Americas’ most exciting architects. Celebrating thirty years of practice, this bilingual survey of recent projects includes BAM Downtown Brooklyn Cultural District, the Rutgers University master plan, Amparo Museum, Centro University, Universidad Panamericano, and a dozen others. With offices in Mexico and New York, TEN Arquitectos mines the forces— migration, trade, economic and information networks—shaping our cities, creating bold forms that mark skylines and activate streets from Mexico City to Brooklyn. This book explores the firm’s evolution as an international practice and the three “lines of investigation” that propel its work—architecture as public space, infrastructure, and territory. Contributors include a who’s who of Mexican and American design thinkers: curator and educator Barry Bergdoll; architect Elizabeth Diller; architect and editor Alejandro Hernández Gálvez; architectural historian Xavier Guzmán Urbiola; historian, essayist, and publisher Enrique Krauze; and architect Thom Mayne. Enrique Norten is founder and director of TEN Arquitectos. His many awards include the Mies van der Rohe Prize of Latin American Architecture, the Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts, and the Richard J. Neutra Medal for Professional Excellence.

Exquisite New England houses

Northern Exposure Works of Carol A. Wilson Architect Contributions by Enrico Pinna and Juhani Pallasmaa a rc h i t ec t u r e — October 2017 9.25 x 11 in / 23.5 x 28 cm 208 pp / 130 color & 40 b+w Hardcover 978-1-61689-611-9 $50.00 / £40.00 R i ghts : Wo rld 55000 9 781616 896119

This intimate portrait of eight houses by the Maine architect Carol A. Wilson illustrates how “local” is an idea as close to architecture as it is to food. Focusing on climate, seasons, views, local materials, the ecological history of building sites, and collaborations with local artisans, Wilson crafts exquisitely designed and built houses that celebrate the beauty of New England and the power of architecture to combine modern forms with a traditional built landscape. Following introductory texts by Enrico Pinna and Juhani Pallasmaa, and a conversation between Wilson and John Leroux, each project opens with a foldout of plans—transitioning from hand-drawn to computer-aided—and information about the house, before culminating in brilliant exterior, interior, and detail photographs. The book closes with an interview in twenty questions that elaborates on Wilson’s working principles and the history of her studio for the past thirty years. Carol A. Wilson, FAIA, is principal of Carol A. Wilson Architect, in Falmouth, Maine. Her modern and environmentally responsive buildings have been honored with numerous design awards and published extensively. She has taught at the University of New Mexico, Montana State University, Bowdoin College’s Coastal Studies Center, Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, and Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.

John Muir Notecards Known in his lifetime as Mountain John, nobody else did as much to foster appreciation for the natural beauty of the American landscape than John Muir. The Scottish-born naturalist walked thousands of miles across the United States, but loved, above all, California, the Sierra Nevada, and Yosemite. His prolific writings—three hundred articles and ten books—and passionate prose about nature and our place in it were read by millions of nineteenth-century Americans, leading to the creation of our national park system. He also founded the Sierra Club, which carries on his program of conservation and preservation 125 years later. His words ring truer than ever today, potent reminders to protect the natural splendors of our land and to root our spirits in nature. • Includes insert with biographical sketch October 2017 4.75 x 6 x 1.5 in / 12 x 15 x 4 cm 12 notecards (4 quotes repeating 3 times) with full-color envelopes 978-1-61689-652-2 $14.95 / £10.99 R i g h ts: Wo rld 51495 9 781616 896522

TATARELLA

The labyrinth is one of the world’s oldest symbols, its meaning often shrouded in myth and mystery or tied to religious rites. Today, this enigmatic form inspires artists to create their own innovative interpretations from such varied materials as ice, snow, salt, wood, stone, glass, cement, and metal. This new collection features both classical examples and the best contemporary projects, showcasing work by artists, landscape artists, and architects from around the world. The diverse and stunning examples include pavement labyrinths of thirteenth-century French cathedrals, a historic English turf maze, Renaissance hedge mazes, and numerous present-day projects by artists and architects including BIG | Bjarke Ingels Group, Chris Drury, Richard Fleischner, Dan Graham, Robert Irwin, Arata Isozaki, Robert Morris, Yoko Ono, and Billie Tsien and Tod Williams, among many others.
