The first comprehensive biography of America’s bestknown sculptor

Monument Man The Life & Art of Daniel Chester French Harold Holzer V i s ua l & p op u l a r C u lt u r e — March 2019 6 x 9 in / 15.2 x 22.9 cm 368 pp / 127 b+w Hardcover with jacket 978-1-61689-753-6 $35.00 / £25.00 R i g h ts: Wo rld 53500 9 781616 897536

The artist who created the statue for the Lincoln Memorial, John Harvard in Harvard Yard, and The Minute Man in Concord, Massachusetts, Daniel Chester French (1850 –1931) is America’s best-known sculptor of public monuments. Monument Man is the first comprehensive biography of this fascinating figure and his illustrious career. Full of rich detail and beautiful archival photographs, Monument Man is a nuanced study of a preeminent artist whose evolution ran parallel to, and deeply influenced, the development of American sculpture, iconography, and historical memory. Monument Man was specially commissioned by Chesterwood / National Trust for Historic Preservation. The release will coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of Chesterwood, his country home and studio, as a public site and with a major renovation of the Lincoln Memorial. The book includes a comprehensive geographical guide to French’s public work. Harold Holzer, winner of the 2015 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize, is a Lincoln scholar and the author of numerous books on Civil War–era art and history. He currently serves as the director of the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, City University of New York. In 2008 he was awarded the National Humanities Medal.

Advance Praise: “As one of the foremost living authorities on Abraham Lincoln, Harold Holzer has long straddled the crossroads of history and art with his own inimitable brand of scholarship. Not surprisingly, in this grandly illustrated and beautifully written biography, he proves to be the ideal guide to the life of Daniel Chester French, who transmuted Abraham Lincoln and other historical figures into monumental sculptures of surpassing beauty, poetry, and inspiration. This book will surely rank as the authoritative life of a man whose creations in stone and bronze have become inseparable parts of our historical memory.” —Ron Chernow

THE WHITE CITY

A

Daniel Chester French with the head of The Republic for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition

n insignificant-looking, two-inch-high plaster cast of a turtle shell is the only surviving relic of Dan and Mary French’s idyllic 1891 summer vacation at a farmhouse near “Aspet,” Augustus and Augusta SaintGaudens’s country estate at Cornish, New Hampshire.1 Charming as it is, the tiny sculpture offers no hint of the enormous impact the visit exerted on French. On the most obvious level, it provided him a welcome escape from the brutal Manhattan heat and a chance to fraternize with fellow artists. And it offered both Frenches a novel, perhaps welcome, break from the inhibiting family tradition of annual summer reunions at the crowded family house at Concord. As it transpired, the trip provided—and the sculpted turtle shell symbolized— significantly more. In a way, it helped change the very arc of French’s personal and professional life, just as his youthful attempt to sculpt a clay frog, the result left on his bemused father’s dinner plate, had altered his life thirty-five years earlier. French’s visit to Cornish—really more of an artists’ colony than a cohesive village—brought him the opportunity to socialize, brainstorm, and even work alongside a revered contemporary in the glorious setting Saint-Gaudens had chosen as a conspicuous summer retreat. Saint-Gaudens had converted a onetime federal-style country inn into a unique mansion with a flourish of eclectic additions and details. Thus the sojourn showed French how an artist of real stature might aspire to live—in a word: grandly. The setting reflected confidence in success while providing further inspiration. At Aspet, French not only executed one of his smallest sculptures but, with SaintGaudens’s encouragement, began planning his very largest. Saint-Gaudens’s bucolic estate, near the picturesque Connecticut River dividing New Hampshire from Vermont, included near the main house a capacious studio, oriented to bring in the soft northern light. The setting was pastoral without being rustic, baronial yet utilitarian, and above all a showcase testifying to Saint-Gaudens’s taste and success. Here was a luxurious summertime arrangement that French could never hope to replicate at the now inadequate little studio he had once built alongside his Concord family home. Aspet offered the awed visitors plenty of space for family activities, too. Never physically strong, Mary French soaked up sunshine while

hroughout the early 1880s, while French worked away in different parts of the country on his portrait busts of Charles Lowell, Henry Wilson, and John Sherman, the Columbia Institution for the Deaf was campaigning in earnest in Washington to raise the full ten thousand dollars needed to finance its proposed memorial to Thomas Gallaudet. After years of fund-raising, the institution finally amassed three thousand dollars to pay French, and another seven thousand to cast in bronze the statue he designed. With the contract to portray Gallaudet, French all but cornered the market on statues of longgone ministers who had turned their attention to education. Like John Harvard before him, Gallaudet had encouraged the establishment of a school he did not live to see reach full flower. Born in 1787, the year of the Constitutional Convention, Rev. Gallaudet had been raised in Connecticut and educated at the divinity school at Yale. He had abandoned the ministry early in the nineteenth century after a life-changing encounter with a nine-year-old deaf girl named Alice Cogswell, the daughter of a neighbor, whom he tried to teach reading and writing. Inspired by the experience, Gallaudet determined to devote the rest of his life to educating deaf people. Alice’s grateful parents paid to send him to Europe to study the experimental teaching methods recently introduced there. In 1817, Gallaudet returned home to help found the pioneering Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons. Later he passed on his calling to his son, Edward Miner Gallaudet, born in 1837. Next to enter the story was a colorful old newspaperman, politician, and entrepreneur, the Jacksonian-era postmaster general Amos Kendall, who had earned a fortune in the 1840s and 1850s from investing in the Morse telegraph. In the latter decade, notwithstanding the distractions of the growing national discord over slavery, Kendall had unexpectedly developed an interest of his own in educating deaf children. It began when twenty homeless deaf orphans from New York found themselves stranded in Washington. The old gentleman came to their rescue, took some of them into his own District of Columbia home, and soon founded the Kendall School for the deaf, naming Edward Miner Gallaudet as its first superintendent.

The perfect gift for the gardener of all seasons

The Gardener Says Quotes, Quips, and Words of Wisdom Compiled and edited by Nina Pick V i s ua l & p op u l a r C u lt u r e — February 2019 5 x 7 in / 12.7 x 17.8 cm 160 pp Hardcover with ribbon marker 978-1-61689-776-5 $15.95 / £10.99 R i g h ts: Wo rld 51595 9 781616 897765

The Gardener Says invites readers to a festive garden party where guests ranging from Gertrude Jekyll and Henry David Thoreau to Michelle Obama and Michael Pollan share their insights and words of inspiration. Ranging from the humorous to the poignant, these quotes from gardeners, poets, philosophers, and landscape designers highlight both the joys and challenges of gardening—the exhaustion at the end of a long day’s work, the satisfaction of seeing a flower blossom, the peace and happiness of time spent in quiet contemplation. A delightful hobby, a potent tool for ecological and social transformation, and a crucial reminder of our place in nature, gardening is, in the words of Mirabel Osler, the one occupation where “if you were to creep up behind someone at their work, you would find them smiling.” Nina Pick is a writer and editor who divides her time between New York and Connecticut. She has served as an editor at Princeton Architectural Press, the New Farmer’s Almanac, and the Inverness Almanac. She has been an enthusiastic quote collector since the age of four.

The first book on a pioneering woman in design

A Colorful Life: Gere Kavanaugh, Designer Louise Sandhaus and Kat Catmur De s ign — April 2019 7.5 x 10 in / 19.1 x 24.5 cm 224 pp / 375 color & b+w Hardcover 978-1-61689-762-8 $40.00 / £28.99 R i g h ts: Wo rld 54000 9 781616 897628

The designer Gere Kavanaugh is an irrepressible force of nature who epitomized the craft and folk vibe of the ’60s and ’70s California design scene and remains a larger-than-life personality today. Raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Kavanaugh became in 1952 only the third woman to earn a degree in Cranbrook Academy of Art’s design program. After successful stints as one of GM’s so-called Damsels of Design and as director of interiors for Victor Gruen’s architecture and planning firm, she opened Gere Kavanaugh/Designs. There, Kavanaugh put her unique stamp on textiles, furniture, toys, graphics, store and restaurant interiors, holiday decor, housewares, and public art—even designing and curating exhibitions. But perhaps her most enduring project has been the joyful, openended, ongoing experiment of her own lifestyle and homes, a dream of color and handcraft. Kavanaugh was awarded the AIGA Medal in 2016, recognizing her “prodigious and polymathic approach to design.” Louise Sandhaus teaches in the graphic design program at California Institute of the Arts and is the author of Earthquakes, Mudslides, Fires & Riots: California and Graphic Design, 1936–1984. Kat Catmur is a graphic designer and illustrator. Recent clients include the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, California Institute of the Arts, and the BBC.

avanaugh began printing textiles and wallcoverings as a young art student in Memphis. Her passion for pattern and color and for learning new techniques would endure throughout her career. Certainly it was encouraged by her faculty at Cranbrook, where a love affair with textile design was embedded in its tradition of experimentation. In this environment, Kavanaugh was saturated with inspiration. ¶ Shortly after graduating from Cranbrook and while she was working for General Motors in Detroit, Kavanaugh designed textiles for Isabel Scott Fabrics. Over the years her relationship with the company expanded into diverse projects, including the design of various promotional materials. Most significantly, in 1968 she helped establish an Isabel Scott factory in South Korea, working with the facility on the production of woven silk textiles of her own design that would appeal to American tastes. ¶ “Color really hit me when I moved to California,” Kavanaugh said of her relocation from Detroit to Los Angeles, where in 1972 she launched her own line of brightly patterned textiles, Geraldine Fabrics. ¶ In a follow-up to the playful wallpaper designs of her early school years, the 1970s was a fruitful decade for Kavanaugh’s wallcovering and paper designs. She created stenciled and silkscreened wallcoverings for manufacturers Bill Keliehor Designs and Bob Mitchell Designs and used the wallpapers in some of her own interior design projects, such as Joseph Magnin stores. They were included in the Pasadena Art Museum’s famed California Design exhibitions, which put handmade and manufactured West Coast design on the national stage. Kavanaugh wrapped up the decade with a collection of metallic wrapping papers for CPS Industries.

Hedda Sterne with Poussin

Berenice Abbott holding a cat

Romanian-born Hedda Sterne (1910–2011) was a key figure (and one of the few women) in the legendary New York School of abstract painters. In this photograph, Sterne—in an elegant black dress—affectionately scratches the chin of her cat Poussin, in the courtyard of her home at 179 East Seventy-First Street, New York City. Poussin was the model of many sketches and a few paintings by Sterne. Her husband, New Yorker illustrator Saul Steinberg, drew a portrait of Poussin inside the cabinet under their kitchen sink; the idea was to keep away mice.

Berenice Abbott took unforgettable photographs of New York City with her wide-format camera in the 1920s and ’30s. As she shaped how countless people saw the modernizing urban landscape, she also redefined gender roles. Abbott unapologetically wore ski pants rather than skirts and lived with her life partner, art critic Elizabeth McCausland, and their cats for decades. Here, we see Abbott on the other side of the camera. Fellow photographer Arnold Crane captured Abbott posing with a furry feline in Maine.

A tribute to architectural drawings in a digital age

Single-Handedly Contemporary Architects Draw by Hand Nalina Moses Foreword by Tom Kundig A rc h i t ec t u r e — May 2019 8 x 10 in / 20.3 x 25.4 cm 256 pp / 220 color Hardcover 978-1-61689-726-0 $50.00 / £35.00 R i g h ts: Wo rld 55000 9 781616 897260

Part of the generation of architects who were trained to draw both by hand and with digital tools, Nalina Moses recently returned to hand drawing. Finding it to be direct, pleasurable, and intuitive, she wondered whether other architects felt the same way. Single-Handedly is the result of this inquiry. An inspiring collection of 220 hand drawings by more than forty emerging architects and well-known practitioners from around the world, this book explores the reasons they draw by hand and gives testimony to the continued vitality of hand drawing in architecture. The powerful yet intimate drawings carry larger propositions about materials, space, and construction, and each one stands on its own as a work of art. Nalina Moses is an architect and writer in New York City. Her writing on art, architecture and design has appeared both in print and online.

As far back as the earliest Greek temples, color has been an integral part of architecture but also one of its least understood elements. Color theory is rarely taught in architecture schools, leaving architects to puzzle out the hows and whys of which colors to select and how they interact, complement, or clash. Color for Architects is profusely illustrated and provides a clear, concise primer on color for designers of every kind. This latest volume in our Architecture Briefs series combines the theoretical and practical, providing the basics on which to build a fuller mastery of this essential component of design. A wealth of built examples, exercises, and activities allows students to apply their learning of color to real-world situations. Architect Juan Serra Lluch is a lecturer and member of the Color Research Group at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, with expertise in modern and contemporary architecture.

Site Marmol Radziner in the Landscape Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner Foreword by Mona Simpson l a n dsc a pe ARC HITEC TURE — May 2019 10 x 13 in / 25.4 x 33 cm 312 pp / 228 color Hardcover 978-1-61689-816-8 $60.00 / £45.00 R i g h ts: Wo rld 56000 9 781616 898168

The spectacular houses of Marmol Radziner merge interior and exterior life as they engage the built and natural environment. With lush photography and an expansive format, Site: Marmol Radziner in the Landscape focuses on the evolving relationship between house and landscape, revealing what the architects describe as “the gradual erasure of boundaries between indoor and outdoor” spaces. This collection of nineteen houses, shown in over two-hundred full-color photographs that will make readers swoon, is organized by habitat—desert, urban, canyon, and woodland—and includes projects in Arizona, Southern California, Utah, Nevada, and the Netherlands. A foreword by novelist Mona Simpson provides a personal reflection on her experiences in a Marmol Radziner house, while an interview with Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner and detailed descriptions of their projects offer insights into the architects’ philosophy and process. Marmol Radziner, a California-based architecture firm established in 1989 by Leo Marmol, FAIA, and Ron Radziner, FAIA, is known equally for its own designs and its restoration of modern masterworks, including homes by Richard Neutra, R. M. Schindler, and John Lautner. The design-build practice is the recipient of numerous local, regional, and national awards.

MOLESKINE BOOKS

The Design of Words Francesco Guerrera Foreword by Paul Antonio

Both lifelong practitioners of calligraphy and recent converts to the art form are finding vibrant expression and new outlets for the design of words. While pen and paper remain essential tools, the digital world has taken on a central role, creating global communities of calligraphers to exchange work and ideas. The Design of Words celebrates the work of one such group, the Calligraphy Masters, whose far-flung members— Calligrafreaks, as they are affectionately known— filled forty Moleskine sketchbooks for an exhibition in Milan. This book is a curated collection of those sketchbooks, celebrating the different styles and personal interpretations of calligraphers in fifteen countries and reflecting the world of calligraphy today. Francesco Guerrera is an art director by profession and maker, photographer, and calligrapher by passion. He is a partner of Milan-based communications agency Le Balene and founder of its Acqua su Marte exhibition space. Previously, he worked at Saatchi & Saatchi, DDB, Arnold Worldwide, Armando Testa, and TBWA / Italy.

The objective of Kengo Kuma is to erase architecture: finding harmony between natural and artificial and mediate the encounter between man and the environment. The drawings collected in this book tell the fading of architecture through textures drawn in graphite that overlap different layers of land, building and sky, in a harmonious whole. Initial sketches go alongside with the study of the technical details that helped to achieve the final result. The use of natural materials - wood, bamboo, stone, rice-paper – merged with technological innovation and compositional skill combines Eastern traditions and look to the future.

Then, while he was making a cup of warm milk, Otto heard a noise outside. Oh! The ball had cracked open!

“You’re too big! You’re going crush me!the branch. The whole afternoon, theto ball sat on I’m leaving!” cried Otto. He couldn’t stand it anymore.

“MOMMY!” cried a creature—very small, very round, and very furry—from inside the ball.

“Whose idea was it to dump a big furry creature at my house?! I was fine on my own!”

Birds build nests in all shapes and sizes, and in all kinds of places, from small burrows underground to sprawling platform nests in the tops of trees. Birds use branches, sticks, twigs, and grass as well as mud, stones, and even spiderwebs to structure and insulate their homes. Some birds, such as orioles and weavers, make pendant nests that hang from trees ( 1 ). Some, such as woodpeckers, inhabit cavities in trees ( 2 ), while others build giant mounds of soil, sticks, and leaves—effectively giant compost heaps that give off heat as they decompose, warming the eggs. The most common and familiar nest is the cup nest. It is built by many passerines as well as hummingbirds and is often found on tree branches ( 3 ) or in tree forks, or even nestled on the ground ( 4 ).

anyone to make concise, readable forms at a larger scale. Stencils can serve as a guide for clear and efficient lettering, freeing the user from the technicalities of handwriting, which can often be inconsistent, highly personal, and subjective in its communication. Besides their utilitarian use, stencil letters have come to signify a scrappy d i y aesthetic sensibility. s t e n c i l e t t e r is built on a simple premise: by deconstructing letters into simpler shapes, users are free to explore an infinite amount of combinations to create letterforms. The work of two designers in particular, W. A. Dwiggins (1880–1956) and Joan Trochut (1920–80), exemplifies the range of expression that simple repeated geometric shapes can serve in the creation of letterforms. Dwiggins employed stencils heavily in the creation of his illustrations, lettering designs, and typeface designs. He understood that the foundation of the alphabet lies in the repetition of shapes, that deconstructing and rearranging these shapes could yield new designs, new forms, and new means for graphic communication. Trochut, meanwhile, focused his energy on mak-

ing a modular shape–based toolset available to letterpress printers as Super Tipo Veloz. This allowed printers to offer their customers unique designs. Included in this s t e n c i l e t t e r kit are four stencils: two stencils of purely geometric shapes, a stencil of ornamental shapes, and another stencil of a full premade alphabet of characters. We hope you enjoy playing with s t e n c i l e t t e r and encourage you to use these stencils as a way to explore the endless creative possibilities within a modest framework! —charles &thorn

As the first comprehensive encyclopedic survey of Western architectural theory from Vitruvius to the present, this book is an essential resource for architects, students, teachers, historians, and theorists. Using only original sources, Hanno-Walter Kruft has undertaken the monumental task of researching, organizing, and analyzing the significant statements put forth by architectural theorists over the last two thousand years. The result is a text that is authoritative and complete, easy to read without being reductive. “I am as astonished to find this book written, so great was the scholarship and labor involved, as I am to find it previously unwritten, so great is the need for it. Its scale and scope is unique.” —Philip Tabor, Architectural Review “A remarkably accessible description of the succeeding intellectual visions that have governed architecture through the ages.” —Thomas D. Sullivan, Washington Times “[T]his is probably the best single-volume summary of architectural theory available to students.” —Newsletter of the Institute for Urban Design “[Kruft] presents lucid descriptions of theories from those of Vitruvius and Alberti to those of Venturi and Alexander, along with guides to primary sources and with more than a little information about the practice that followed the theory. A wonderful resource.” —Interior Design

A History of Architectural Theory from Vitruvius to the Present Hanno-Walter Kruft

Francesca Tatarella is an architect and designer based in Milan. She is the copublisher of 22Publishing, editor of Natural Architecture (2007), and author of Natural Architecture Now (2014).

The labyrinth is one of the world’s oldest symbols, its meaning often shrouded in myth and mystery or tied to religious rites. Today, this enigmatic form inspires artists to create their own innovative interpretations from such varied materials as ice, snow, salt, wood, stone, glass, cement, and metal.

Also available from Princeton Architectural Press:

This new collection features both classical examples and the best contemporary projects, showcasing work by artists, landscape artists, and architects from around the world. The diverse and stunning examples include pavement labyrinths of thirteenth-century French cathedrals, a historic English turf maze, Renaissance hedge mazes, and numerous present-day projects by artists and architects including BIG | Bjarke Ingels Group, Chris Drury, Richard Fleischner, Dan Graham, Robert Irwin, Arata Isozaki, Robert Morris, Yoko Ono, and Billie Tsien and Tod Williams, among many others.

PUNCTURE

If you’re one of the billions of people worldwide who begin the day with a cup of take-out coffee, you may have marveled at the ubiquitous plastic coffee cup lid. With its clever combination of indentations, protrusions, tabs, and score lines that can be peeled, pinched, and punctured to create an opening for sipping, this design artifact allows coffee drinkers to take their beverage on the road while guarding them from the hazards of cascading, piping-hot liquid. Louise Harpman and Scott Specht have collected these humble triumphs of industrial design, in their many variations, for decades, creating the world’s largest collection of coffee cup lids. In addition to life-size specimen photographs, Coffee Lids includes essays charting the history, development, and categorization of the coffee lid; a field guide to lid features; and numerous original patent drawings. This quirky design exploration will delight anyone who takes note of the small bits of genius that surround us every day. You’ll never look at your drinkthrough, disposable hot-beverage lid the same way again.
