Welcoming words Dear Colleagues On behalf of the organizing committee, it is a great pleasure and honor to extend our warmest welcome to all participants to the 8th International Congress on the Amelioration of the Quality of Lίfe in chronic neurological diseases, which is held in one of the most historical and cultural places of the world, the most sacral place of the ancient Greece, the city of Delphi, regarded as the omphalos, the 'navel of the world', the symbol of unity among people. The ruins of Ancient Delphi, located at the foot of Mount Parnassos, range in date from the Neolithic period (4000 BC), to the early Christian era. The sanctuary of Delphi, established in the eighth century BC, dedicated to Apollo, was the cultural and religious centre of the Hellenic world and the symbol of unity of all Greek city states of the world. The sanctuary was the centre of the Amphictyonic League, characterized by the high religious, political, financial and cultural influence in the ancient world. The Amphictyonic League organized the Pythian Games, comprised musical and athletic competitions, which were the second important games in Greece after the Olympics. The Delphic oracle, which has gained a high reputation, fame, prestige and authority, was regarded by men as the most valuable, real and important and decisive motivation for making plans and taking any serious decision for the future. The oracle was released by the priestess Pythia, in an ecstatic condition and was further interpreted by the priests of Apollo. The Byzantine emperor Theodosius abolished the sanctuary and barbarian invasions destroyed the precinct in 394 BC. The city of Delphi is characterized as a world heritage place by UNESCO. In the museum of the city the "Charioteer of Delphi" is going to welcome us, with an admirable dignity and modesty, demonstrating the eternal beauty of the Greek art and the unique harmony of the idealized realism. Fron the scientific point of view, the 8th International Congress on the Amelioration of the Quality of Lίfe in chronic neurological diseases, will again aim to be a workshop of new expectations in the research and treatment of the chronic neurologic diseases, such as Alzheimer's diseases, Parkinson’a disease, Vascular Dementia and Multiple Sclerosis. Outstanding leaders in the fields of Dementia, Neurogenetics, Cerebrovascular diseases, Neurodegeneration, Neurorehabilitation and Neuroethics have been invited in order to inspire in junior researchers and young scientists the enthusiasm, the devotion and the ethics in the crucial field of the chronic neurological diseases. According to the spirit of all the previous congresses, a special effort has been produced by the Organizing Committee for promoting young neuroscientists to participate with platform presentations and posters on the main topics of the congress, as well as with free communications. As always, our congress is an opportunity for an ideal harmonization of the scientific collaboration with the history, the culture, the spirituality, the vision and the real friendship among people. We are very grateful to all of you for your valuable contribution and efforts for the success of this Congress and we hope that the picturesque winter atmosphere of Delphi, with the superb landscape, amalgamated with the scientific fever of the Congress will be a lasting memorable experience for all of us. Yours Sincerely Stavros J.Baloyannis Chairman
