s we write this letter from the directors, winter winds are howling, snow blankets the ground and we can’t wait for spring to arrive. Pretty much every weekend during the winter we make a big pot of soup. Sometimes it starts with a recipe, but often the flavors are determined by the rich assortment of ingredients we have on hand. The backbone could be a little exotic, like roast duck or smoked turkey. There’s always a complement of healthy, tasty vegetables and homemade stock. We might add the chickpeas that never made it into a salad, or some tortellini from dinner the night before. A solid dash of salt, pepper, cumin, rosemary and maybe a spoonful of pesto or cilantro chutney give it pizzazz.

The exhibition is funded in part by The Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts; the National Endowment for the Arts; Massachusetts Cultural Council; the Carlyn Steiner ‘67 and George Steiner Endowed Fund, in honor of Joan Smith Koch; the Suzannah J. Fabing Programs Fund for SCMA; and the Publications and Research Fund, SCMA. Image: Mary Bauermeister. German, born 1934. #175 The Great Society (detail), 1969. Mixed media optical box. What makes the soup so wonderful is that all of the different ingredients blend together into a delicious, nourishing and comforting meal which changes every time you make it. This is kind of how we approach putting together a Paradise City show. It has a lot to do with the variety and balance of the exhibiting artists, and how we put them all together to create an edifying experience that simply isn’t your usual craft show. We start with a base of fabulous jewelers, functional and sculptural ceramists and a dash of talented young clothing designers. We enrich the pot with some remarkable painters, photographers and printmakers, and then thicken it with sculpture – which has become one of the most popular categories among our patrons. This spring’s “soup” has the added flavor of a great many incredibly creative furniture designers, whose work ranges from Shaker or Japanese-inspired to wildly imaginative sideboards, beds and tables that use traditional craftsmanship as a jumping off point to what can only be described as functional art. At last November’s Paradise City Arts Festival in Marlborough, we got into a conversation with an animated couple who seemed to be having a great time. We stopped them to ask, “Are you having fun?” The woman replied, “It’s more than fun. It’s nourishing!” That’s exactly what we aim for at every Paradise City show. To be nourished, you need to take in a broad, diverse diet that’s well-balanced. To truly enjoy the experience, you need to spice it up with fresh ingredients and imagination. They say variety is the spice of life… so if you like spice, you’ll love this spring’s Paradise City Arts Festivals. See you around the fairs!

umans have always reached for the stars to free themselves from their physical and spiritual connection to the earth. Icarus built himself wings of feathers and wax and flew too close to the sun. Da Vinci had a prescient fascination with the invention of a flying machine. Kubrick’s haunting celestial imagery in 2001, A Space Odyssey expressed the galactic yearnings of an entire generation. Artists have always been there to chronicle this desire.

he sky is truly the limit at this spring’s special exhibition, “Up in the Air!” Paradise City’s artists will give you the moon and the stars! They will draw, sculpt, weave and dream up flying figures and rockets, birds, winged dragons and skies filled with billowing clouds. If it isn’t tethered to the ground, it’s fair game. ”Up in the Air!” explores all that defies gravity, whether it flies, floats or is suspended in space. So let your imagination soar in this uplifting show!

ibel Alpaslan exclaims, "I am Turkish and I am born of clay!" Her passion is made manifest in ceramics inspired by her background: bowls in the warm saturated colors of her native country, covered dishes inspired by the Ottomans, large amphoras traditionally used to transport wine or olive oil. Alpaslan has also designed a series of porcelain bowls inspired by her childhood home, Kusadasi, which means "dove island." Each piece in this collection is accented with white doves and the sublime blue of the Aegean Sea. Alpaslan received her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Marmarra in Istanbul. For over ten years, she ran a ceramics gallery in Kusadasi on the Aegean Coast of Turkey. Now living in Massachusetts, Alpaslan enjoys mixing her Turkish past with American influences in her designs. "I love the new artistic recipe that I am creating! And now, I have become a sort of Turkish artistic ambassador to America. I think it is part of my artistic responsibility to draw from the previous generations and – through my hands, eyes, and heart – carry that wisdom and spirit into the future.” Please say karşilama to this talented ceramic artist at both Paradise City shows this spring. "Aegean Sunset", hand thrown stoneware, hand carved and painted. 9" diameter, 7.5" height.

K

en Salem was inspired to create wooden furniture after helping his family transform a 1700s farmhouse into a restaurant. The history of wood is critical to the work he does, as 80% of the lumber he uses is reclaimed or salvaged. Much of it is American chestnut, abundant in the US before a blight in the early 1900s. Salem also works in other native North American woods, including cherry, walnut and maple.

Salem's furniture is inspired by the wood itself. "All wood tells a story, has a history, and has a feel to it that gives us direction in the design," he says. Sometimes the shape of an interesting burl will be the inspiration for a one-of-a-kind headboard, table or desk. Traditional joinery methods are used to ensure that pieces will last for generations. Salem crafts pieces for all rooms of your home, from stunning chests, armoires and cabinets to striking bed frames, dining tables and benches. He even makes special furniture for offices, restaurants and bars, and enjoys designing custom items to the exact specifications of his customers. Salem lives and works in Massachusetts. "Live Edge Desk", big leaf maple burl inlaid with river stones in resin "streams." 65" x 44" x 30".

P

aige Carter produces whimsical hand-painted canvas floorcloths, which bring beauty and intrigue to any room. Her designs are bold and bright, inspired by the sea life, flowers, birds and colors of her native Maine. Carter explains, “I grew up on Duxbury Bay with its vast expanse of mud flats where seabirds of all types congregate. My long love of all waterfowl began along the banks and marshes of the magnificent Back River which transforms into a golden refuge for migrating birds each autumn. Now I reside beneath one of the coast’s loveliest lighthouses in southern Maine. Carter's floorcloths are made from sturdy canvas with water-based primers, paints and varnishes. They are tough enough to withstand boots, dog claws and scraping chairs, but pretty as any painting on the wall. Carter's business, Bog Dog Floorcloths, also offers table runners, placemats and pet mats. She enjoys working with clients to create pieces that resonate with the palettes of their homes or reflect a personal interest. "Bird Whimsy", canvas with acrylic paint and water-based varnish. 48" diameter.

L

isa Van Allsburg's collection of sacred objects, Forgotten Judaica, harkens back to a time when these items were innately narrative. They often depicted a passage found in the Torah or Talmud. They might recall a popular Yiddish folktale. More often, Judaica from this era simply celebrated nature itself. Van Allsburg's Jewish ceremonial objects, such as mezuzahs, menorahs, Kiddush cups and Seder plates, are embellished with leaves, pomegranates, rams, lions and doves, motifs found in Jewish lore.

Lisa often collaborates on pieces with her husband Chris Van Allsburg, the Caldecott Medal award-winning children's book author and illustrator. Traditional craftsmanship and materials, including sterling and nickel silver, copper and bronze, produce items that become family heirlooms honoring the Jewish heritage for generations to come. "Jeremiah's Dove", mezuzah, cast bronze. 5" long.

P

eter Petrochko's impressive wood sculptures, vessels and furniture are the serendipitous product of his combined studies in architecture and fine arts. His fascination with structure and design is apparent, as is his interest in exploring color, pattern and texture.

Petrochko uses a variety of conventional and exotic woods in his work; black walnut, ash, sycamore, beech, maple, madrone, cocobola, birch, poplar, zebrawood, cherry, mahogany and many more appear throughout his oeuvre. His pieces range from geometrically patterned band-sawn vessels to more natural vessels which are hand carved from a single log. The use of band saw, laminating, hand carving and disc sanding techniques allow him to create three dimensional forms, namely wood vessels, directly from flat lumber. His work resides in the White House Collection of American Crafts, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Yale University and the Mint Museum, as well as numerous public and private collections around the world. We are pleased to welcome this Connecticut-based artist to his first Paradise City Arts Festival in Northampton. "Window Vessel", White Ash. 7" diameter x 17".

yesha Mayadas says, "My work is informed by the pathway of a single line. If I am successful in following that line to its logical conclusion, l have designed successfully." Movement and fluidity are key elements of her work. Curved and coiled metals form spirals, flowers, loops and circles, laying sinuously along the throat or wrist. Swirling discs interconnect to embody waves. Embedded accents of diamonds wink like delicate stars. Pearls, lapis and green onyx stones hang like tear drops. Born in Calcutta, India, Mayadas spent years as a textile engineer before pursuing her Masters degree in Metals and Sculpture at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She now creates stunning necklaces, earrings and wedding rings in her combined studio/gallery in New Jersey. Be sure to check out her handsome men's line, which includes distinctive cuff links and rings. Cocktails, anyone? Mayadas even offers fanciful Martini skewers! "Firefly Earrings", sterling silver accented with 18k gold and diamonds. "Shadow Necklaces", 18k gold, 16" long.

my Meltzer creates scarves, shawls, pillow cases and neckties from silk. She is a master of the Shibori technique, an ancient Japanese method that involves binding, twisting or folding cloth to achieve various patterns. Time, temperature, water and pressure all affect the way the dye attaches to the fabric, which makes each piece unique. Her vibrant palette is endless and ever-changing, as she unveils new hues each season. The shapes of leaves, petals, zigzags and circles emerge kaleidoscopically. Soft edges bleed like watercolors. Some motifs seem dappled with sunlight, others textured as snakeskin. Still more seem to glow internally, luminous as the Northern Lights. An ardent environmentalist, her Cambridge studio is powered by sun and wind. Meltzer will be happy to show you multiple ways to tie a scarf with special knots, rosettes and loops at both Paradise City shows this spring. "Scarf Collection", Shibori-dyed silk chiffon.

L

ynn Yarrington is a fourth generation weaver, transforming the traditional craft of her English great-grandfather into refreshingly contemporary designs. She hand weaves distinctive coats, capes, jackets, vests and shawls in dynamic colors ranging from bright jewel tones to deep earthy hues. Each piece is lovingly created in her Vermont studio on a Macomber floor loom with rayon, silk, cotton and chenille yarns.

Yarrington says, “It is important to me that there is a balance of visual appeal, the marrying of color and texture within the silhouette. She pays loving attention to the finishing details, such as silk piping, outsized buttons, beautiful linings and Mandarin collars. Garment shapes are designed to move with ease, elegance and style, fitting in with the complex lifestyle of women today. Yarrington was honored in October as a Paradise City Founding Exhibitor, and has participated in Paradise City shows for twenty years. "Sleeved Cape", woven rayon, cotton, silk and bamboo, and "Changing Color Pattern Shawl", woven bamboo and rayon with twill pattern silk accents and patterned silk finishing.

atthieu Cheminée’s striking jewelry draws inspiration from many cultural and ethnic influences. Parisian born, he moved to Taos, New Mexico at the age of 19, where he first learned metal working from Navajo, Hopi and Zuni silversmiths. In Mali, West Africa, he studied with Touareg and Bambara jewelers. He received a classical education in professional jewelry-making in Montreal, where he now lives.

Cheminée employs a stamping technique, prevalent among indigenous artisans around the world. With this technique, he creates detailed textural patterns on gold and silver rings and bracelets, embellished with precious stones. Many designs are not fully closed circles, but cuff-like, with nearly overlapping bands. “For many years now, I have been working to give back to the West African jewelers who have given me so much,” writes Cheminée. “One of the ways I have been doing this is through a teaching collaboration. I have been filming old techniques in Guinea, Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso and then creating a course from those videos. I offer these classes in Montreal and split the proceeds with the African jewelers. The revenue created by this equitable collaboration is leading to significant changes in the lives of these wonderful and skillful jewelers.” He has published a book, Legacy, honoring the tradition of these artisans. Cheminée will make his Paradise City debut in Northampton over Memorial Day Weekend.

"Stampclastic" ring, sterling silver, 18k gold, champagne diamonds.

oldyfish, J.J. Reichert's line of handbags, includes both "Everyday" and "Fancy" collections. Practical and hip, the former is created with bold colors, black and white patterns and black anchoring pieces of fabric. Simple hobo bags, large totes, cross-over bags, small clutches and even wristlets are all available for carrying any variety of things from laptops to lipsticks. The evening bags in Reichert's dressier collection are made of sumptuous velvet, satin and raw silk, decked out with the shimmering feathers of peacocks and dramatic plumes of ostrich. You may ask why "Goldyfish"? Reichert says, “Goldfish are the symbol of hope and good fortune. I like to think that goldfish represent the notion that it is possible for anybody to achieve whatever they want in life.” Her handbags are made one at a time at her studio in Ohio and each piece incorporates the finishing touch of a goldfish charm. We are excited to welcome this new exhibitor to Paradise City Northampton. "Peacock Clutch", peacock and stripped coque rooster feathers, raw silk, tie-dye velvet and faux crocodile.

"Extra Large Tote", velour upholstery fabric, black and white patterned upholstery fabric, and velvet black micro suede with stiffener fabric.

N

ancy Kubale's arresting stoneware sculptures marry classical human busts and figures with the iconography of today, including graffiti, abstract design and symbols. Whether a solitary figure or an existential crowd of people alone in their nakedness, all are imbued with a universal language that speaks to the human condition. Some characters seem to be from a surreal circus, adorned with whimsical body decorations and props; others look like they are simply waiting for a ride. This North Carolina sculptor layers the surfaces of her pieces through multiple firings with terra sigillata, oxides, underglaze, glaze, and underglaze pencil. Final figures are assembled with wood, metal, fiber and/or found objects. “Within the figures there is the visual message and the deeper meaning,” explains Kubale. “The use of metaphors such as windows, wings, or ladders express ambiguity, determination and aspiration. I am intrigued by what we think, do and say, by who we are and how we live - primarily at the soul level.” Please welcome this extraordinary artist to Paradise City Northampton for the first time this spring. "Artifact", hand built earthenware, terra sigillata, oxide and underglaze, spray paint and permanent marker. 10" x 10" x 59".

R

ather than merely portraying a setting, R. Michael Carr captures the essence of it. His oil paintings depict luminous landscapes and provocative interior rooms. Light plays an integral role, shimmering off of water, bathing gardens in sunlight, illuminating clouds and casting shadows across tabletops. Carr's palette is lush and organic. Compositions are minimal and open, often revealing a wide expanse of sky. Carr says that he is "preoccupied with fields of color and how they can both harmonize in a beautiful way and mimic a particular light." This Rhode Island painter will show at Paradise City Marlborough for the first time. "Kitchen Window", oil on canvas. 46" x 42".

oxane Chardon uses muted tones to create her understated landscape and still life paintings. Working in pastels and oil paint, she produces images that are representational, but that sometimes soften to the point of near abstraction. Her scenes are consistently tranquil and atmospheric. Each piece in the collection "Mediations" points viewers to a quiet spot somewhere far away on the horizon. "Their perceived simplicity is deliberate, allowing the viewer's mind to clear all thoughts," she says. "The objective is a sense of solitude and peace, a place of refuge." Chardon's "Earth" series frames the landscapes of New England, where she travels year round to work en plein air. These images include tree lined waterways, fields, marshes, barns, cows and swaths of hazy skies. Once a successful software engineer and consultant, Chardon has effectively traded technology for the world of nature. You can see the work of this New Hampshire artist as she joins Paradise City for the first time at both spring shows. "Catching a Moment", pastel on paper. 24" x 24".

S

usan Valentine paints botanicals that are so hyperrealistic, the viewer can practically smell the flowers. Sunlight glows through oversized blossoms; fat water droplets perch precariously on petals; shy buds hide in the shadows. These luscious garden specimens are in spectacular focus, blown up to explore the deep hearts of blooms, the delicate tendrils of stamens and the green undersides of flower heads. Some images are so large, she uses diptychs and triptychs to portray them. Working from her studio in Leverett, Massachusetts, Valentine also brings to life the landscapes of New England, celebrating its seasons, farming industry and wide open spaces. She composes scenes with snow covered expanses, summer lakes, tobacco barns, rock walls and asparagus fields. "My view of things usually concentrates on the details," she says. "I'm attracted to the larger view only in that it offers the gift of more to discover if I can look closely enough." Valentine will present her work for the first time at Paradise City Northampton over Memorial Day Weekend. "Hydrangea 2", triptych, oil on canvas. 60" x 108".

Paradise City Marlborough March 20, 21 & 22

Royal Plaza Trade Center • Marlborough, Massachusetts

We've always loved Mark Del Guidice's one-of-a-kind milkpainted furniture, but this step away from color is very intriguing. He'll have lots of new work to show you, like this remarkable credenza. His work showcases unusual forms and gorgeous hardwoods highlighted with incised carvings. Booth 225

Teresa Crowninshield believes that an elegant, well-fitting coat or jacket can transform the everyday into a special occasion, and that skillful pattern work and fine handtailoring is the key to unlocking the unique beauty of each woman’s figure. Booth 204

Illinois jeweler Jonathan Rutledge loves high karat gold for its deep, rich, yellow color, the warmth of the metal, and the visual contrast between gold and vibrant gemstones. Granulation, an ancient technique traced back to the Sumerians in 2500 BC, provides texture and depth. Booth 227

Don Reed put down his paintbrushes in 2007, picked up a palette knife, and never looked back. The thick, buttery paint in his vivid landscapes visually sculpts the forests, marshes and cities of New England onto square canvases, making us see them anew. He says, “It has been a process of discovery, joy and evolution.” Welcome Don to his first Paradise City show. Booth 102

This season’s special exhibition mounted in the café is “Up in the Air!”, a show of works exploring all that defies gravity. For your listening pleasure, Paradise City presents cool jazz, hot vocals, swing and American standards from a different band every day in the Sculpture Café. Paul Arslanian, Green Street Trio

Show Spotlights Just in time for the first weekend of spring, we give you Beatrice Gilbert’s “Blossoming Bulbs” art quilt. Vibrant silk enhances the traditional piecing and hand-appliquéd trapunto creates dimensionality. The quilting patterns highlight the “bulbs” to unify them with the “blossoming” colors. Booth 232

Dale Rogers turns his musings about life into large-scale steel sculpture. This one is “Think and Be Free”, a massive stainless and Cor-Ten steel head standing almost 10 feet tall, outfitted with moveable gears. Booth 231

Friday: JD Jazz Trio features amazing bass accompanied by blazing keyboards and inspired percussion. Jeff Dostal brings a juicy repertoire of jazz standards and tunes from the Great American Songbook. Saturday: The O-Tones’ dynamic renditions of Swing and Motown music will keep you tapping your feet for hours. Soulful lead singer Mary Witt is accompanied by bass, guitar, percussion and three-part harmonies. Sunday: Green Street Trio. Pianist, composer and dance accompanist Paul Arslanian, the founder of the Jazz Tap Ensemble, leads this remarkable band, back by popular request. Arslanian is joined by noted bassist George Kaye and percussionist Jon Fisher.

Sweet! These adorable ceramic “Flower Bowls” are the perfect size for ice cream. No two pieces by Erin Moran are ever the same. Each bowl, cup, plate and pendant lamp is hand built and glazed in sunny colors, with a wonderfully tactile surface. Booth 450

Paradise City Northampton Paradise City Arts Festival May 23, 24 & 25 • Memorial Day Weekend May 23, 24, 25

2015

Three County Fairgrounds • Northampton, Massachusetts

Special Exhibit "Up in the Air!"

Bienvenido! 歡迎! Willkommen!

ILI Graduates

Welcome this show’s silent auction beneficiary, the International Language Institute of Massachusetts (ILI), which provides free English classes for new arrivals from all over the world so they can utilize their skills in this country and successfully integrate into the local community. The campaign for this program is called Giving Voice. A different selection of beautiful donations by Paradise City exhibitors will open for bidding each day at the Silent Auction Tables. The tables will close at exactly 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, and 3pm on Monday. Arena Building

This spectacular "Monarch Vase" depicting fluttering butterflies is ceramist Stephanie Young’s entry for the special exhibit “Up in the Air!” in the Gazebo. A longtime Paradise City exhibitor, her work is inspired by nature, turn of the century crafts (her mother dealt in antiques) and historic architecture. Booth 630

The Festival Dining Tent provides a delicious sampling of Northampton’s vibrant restaurant scene. This is your chance to check out some of the area’s best chefs, with exciting menus from around the world. While you’re dining, enjoy a great lineup of new musical talent on the Soundstage: NEW! Saturday: Juke Joint Jazz plays their own hard-driving and melodic arrangements of the classic jazz repertoire, with influences ranging from Miles Davis to the Grateful Dead, from Monk to Funk. The quintet of piano, guitar, saxophone, bass and drums has played widely throughout New England. NEW! Sunday: Sugar Ray and the Bluetones! Sugar Ray Norcia cut five albums with the legendary band Roomful of Blues, and has received three Grammy nominations and five Blues Music Awards. Sugar Ray and the Bluetones’ newest album, Living Tear to Tear, was released last summer and debuted #1 on The Living Blues Radio Charts. NEW! Memorial Day: Powerhouse vocalist Evelyn Harris recorded 10 albums over 18 years with the internationally acclaimed Sweet Honey in the Rock. Harris, along with a backup trio, explores an extensive array of musical styles, interpreting African-American traditional and contemporary material, freedom songs from around the world, jazz, pop, rock ‘n’ roll, gospel and blues.

Show Spotlights Megan Brogden has developed a steadfast following for her lightweight, fashion-conscious and very wearable clothing. Shimmering, embroidered silks are combined with lush cottons and velvets to make her vests, shawl-collared tunics and travel-ready reversible jackets. Booth 310

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES BUILDING Dorothy Fagan spent a six week residency in France, painting en plein air in Provence, Brittany, Normandy, Giverny and Paris. Combining thinned oils with charcoal and pastel, she was thrilled to discover a new and exhilarating way of fusing drawings with large washes of painted color. Booth 706

So you think you’ve seen it all in rustic furniture? New exhibitors Bob and Jesse Brown build bedroom sets, dining room furniture and astonishing pool tables that would all be at home in either cabins or castles. Their Indiana property is filled with gorgeous hardwood trees that provide raw materials and inspiration. Booth 735

Terri Talas’ work provides an extraordinary window into the natural world through carvings created in rare fossilized material and naturally shed antlers. Her work ranges from museumquality sculpture, celebrated for its intricacy and realism, to miniature carvings worn as jewelry, like this "Polar Bear" pendant, hand carved in 15,000-years-old Alaskan mammoth ivory. isting artists by their media LISTINGS KEY categories can be deceptive. Marlborough, MA Booth# Northampton, MA Booth# Art isn’t static; fine art and contemporary craft often overlap, and neither is easy to categorize. Artists, by their very nature, experiment with many different ideas and materials.

Frost • Carved "Hummingbird"

Last year you may have found your favorite Paradise City artist under Metal; today, by expanding the scope of his work, he may be listed under Furniture or Sculpture – or even Mixed Media. Likewise, a printmaker may have turned to painting, or a ceramist to glass. Keeping all of this in mind, the following list should be used as a loose and variable guide to the amazing diversity of Paradise City artists.
