YOUR MEET UOUR L T - Jack Hello everyone!
For those of you who may not know me, my name is Jack Miao and I will be serving as the Paradise Lieutenant Governor for the 2018-2019 term. I am going into my third year at San Diego State University as a Kinesiology - pre PT major. Outside of circle K I love hiking, music festivals, and traveling. For all new and returning members let me be one of the first to give you a warm welcome Paradise.

Paradise is one of the 9 divisions in the CNH Circle K district. Paradise comprises of all schools in Hawai’i and San Diego, currently at the time of writing this totals to nine schools: San Diego State University, Palomar College, Grossmont College, CSU San Marcos, UC San Diego, UH Hilo, UH Maui College UH Manoa, and Hawai’i Pacific University. Our divisional theme this year is the Hawaiian saying Kākou: The value of inclusiveness All of us. We are in this together, learn to speak the language of we. I hope you all find this division to be a place you can call home. I’m incredibly excited for all the things we’ll accomplish this year as a division and all the new heights each and every club is going to make this year. Remember I am always available to any of you, not just as your LTG, but as your friend. Good luck on the incoming school year, make sure to put yourself first, stay hydrated, and above all have fun this term in Circle K. Sincerely,
Jack Miao
YOUR MEETsunny UOUR governor
Hello Paradise Pineapples!!!!
For those of you I haven’t met yet, I’m Manuel Santiago and I serve the Cal-Nev-Ha District of Circle K International as the 2018-2019 District Governor! As summer is coming to an end, I hope you’ve all been able to make the most out of the school break and are ready for the new school year! Honestly, I could use a couple more weeks(or months) of break, but with the new school year comes new members, new memories, and a whole lot of fun for our CNH Circle K District! So I hope you’re all hyped and ready for it all!
As new and potential members attend meetings and events, take the time to remember your first Circle K event! As an incoming freshman in college, I started attending Orange Coast College Circle K events the summer before my first year, and I felt so welcomed from the very start. With my hectic work schedule, I was still able to keep up with Circle K through constant e-mail reminders, weekly service projects, and frequent meetings and social events! Through my experience as a first year, my passion for service was reignited with the addition of fellowship and leadership! The experiences my board and returning members gave me is why I decided to stick with CKI in the long run and the reason why I was inspired to apply and run for future leadership positions! So to all you returning members and board officers, whenever you start to feel tired, burnt out, or unmotivated, remind yourself why you stayed in CKI or why you went for that board position! And for every member reading this blurb, whether you’re new, returning, or on a board, give it your all when it comes to Circle K! Strive to do better things, provide better experiences, and create new memories with those who surround you!
MANUEL SANTIAGO district governor
With that, I’d like to also thank the Paradise Division for your support not only to the District, but personally through my 2018-2019 Governor’s Project: The WASH Project! Through your event “CKI Paradise Washed”, you’ve been able to raise money and gain awareness for those in the world who don’t have access to clean water, sanitation education, and hygiene care! I look forward to see what more you all can do to contribute to the WASH Project in the future! Lastly, thank you to Jack and Aaron for allowing me a chance to have this blurb in the Pair of Dice newsletter! I hope you’re all excited for our upcoming District events! In addition to webinars that will be held, CNH Circle K Week, Crazy Kompetition for Infants, Pediatrict Trauma Program Week, and Fall Training Conference will all be coming up very soon! So make sure to stay updated on all this CNH Circle K these next few months!! Have a sunny day! Manuel Santiago

mmm, deliciou s ! On Saturday, August 18th, 2018, I attended CSUSM Circle K’s Spaghetti Fundraiser Dinner with my good friend, Daniel, and it was honestly a great way to end my summer vacation!! Within the past few days, I have been feeling really overwhelmed due to the fact that my first day back to school is right around the corner so attending this event allowed me to relax and enjoy myself with amazing individuals from SDSU, UCSD, and of course CSUSM. Throughout the event I was able to develop new friendships, attend the August DCM, eat some yummy spaghetti and desserts, and take home some pretty cool plates :’)

The night was just filled with great laughs and conversations. I really enjoyed myself and I am really glad that I was make it out to the event that night. I wouldn’t want to end my summer any other way and I can’t wait for the next Circle K event!!

Walk 6K, Save 6K
by Jakob Woo-Ming Hi, hi! Your San Diego Executive Assistant (that’s me, Jakob) has some updates about our ongoing summer divisional project, Paradise WASHED! To reiterate what the WASH Project is, we are partnering with UNICEF to provide education, awareness, and funding to supply clean drinking water and sanitation education to schools and children in underdeveloped regions. This project will target Haiti’s emergency needs with a complete WASH response package; supporting emergency water access interventions for people in drought-affected areas; and providing internally displaced people with alternative sustainable sanitation strategies. To participate, lookup the Paradise WASHed Facebook group and either donate $6 at circlek.org/wash, or challenge yourself to walk 6 km at a time. Or both! Then, make a post tagging some of your friends to do the same! In just a month, members from not only Paradise, but from all over the district have participated in Paradise WASHed! As of writing, we have raised a lucky $77! I have also set up a Facebook fundraiser for my birthday that has matched this total! Thank you to everyone who has been apart of this project. To those who have been nominated to do the challenge, don’t wait! The challenge ends September 10th. So gather your loose change and get your running shoes on! If you have any questions, contact Jakob Woo-Ming or any of the Divisional Leadership Team members.

a car nival like no other! The annual Relay for Life East County debuted a few miles away from Grossmont College at Cuyamaca College. This was a 24 hour event to fundraise money for the American Cancer Society. Kiwanis was no stranger to this event! Grossmont CKI President Olivia Mercado served as team leader for Team Tyler during the full day event. Named after her boyfriend Tyler, this was not her first time participating during Relay for Life. She announced the instructions for the Road to Recovery Car Show to the hundreds of attendees. She invited members from Paradise Division to be a part of her team and show support!

Olivia and her team had been planning for weeks. Earlier in the month, she held an Applebees breakfast fundraiser. She and her volunteers served breakfast to patrons to fundraise money for her team. Several members of her Kiwanis Family dropped by to support her! This year, Relay for Life East County was carnival themed. All of the different teams had different booths with carnival themed challenges and snacks. One could watch their cotton candy be whipped up, try their luck at ring toss, and win some circusy prizes! With themed laps and live music playing, this Relay for Life was truly an unforgettable carnival!

As Paradise Spirit Chair, it is my honor to spotlight UH Hilo Circle K International for their extraordinary commitment to service. As summer starts, member involvement starts to dwindle as people are going back home but this was not a problem faced by UH Hilo as they have had a jam packed summer. Their commitment to one of the tenants of Circle K is truly inspiring as they volunteered with Pu’uhonua o Puna. In May 2018, Hawaii was hit with tragedy as the volcanos erupted leaving many people homeless without any resources to get back onto their feet. This is where Pu’uhonua o Puna steps in as a refuge for those effected by setting up locations in Pāhoa to had out info and supplies. The community is what drives as well as funds this organization and UH Hilo has done a phenomenal job of volunteering at these locations multiple times over the summer. They have gone at least 5 times within the summer to help those who were effected and it is truly admirable to see them help their community in the time of crisis. I am also proud to call them Circle K’ers as they continue to serve with Pu’uhoua o Puna even after the eruption. I hope that I can take after their passion for service and apply to my own club as well as the Paradise Division. We have many great clubs with multiple ways they are unique but UH Hilo really embodies the motto, “Live to Serve. Love to Serve.”

a weekend of spontaneous fun...
by H ANANO YA MAZAKI

As President of California State University, San Marcos Circle K International, I hosted a board retreat with my board over the summer. CSU San Marcos’ board is not as big as UCSD’s but we are just as busy and so we had a hard time blocking out dates for our board retreat. Our board finally decided on a date which was July 27 to the 29 and the location was at a little house in the mountains. The drive up to Lake Arrowhead had to be the best bonding experience I had with the people in my car. We sang together, talked together and had anxiety going up the mountain to Lake Arrowhead. There was a moment in our drive up the mountain in which my car was not moving an inch even though I was stepping on the gas pedal because of how steep the hill was. But that didn’t stop us from going up the hill because once we started moving again, we were at our cabin in no time.
After going up the hill, we had a spontaneous team bonding experience as we came across a dog with a collar walking around the mountain. All of us was confused as the dog came to the driver’s side door and jumped in without question. The collar said his name was Tobi and there was no one in sight to claim him. Tobi was taken to our cottage where he had lots of fun messing around with our members while his parents came to pick him up. This occurrence led to a more relaxed environment. Throughout the whole weekend, we did numerous activities that brought the members closer together. Our Media Technology Chair, Brian Uran and I were the cooks for our club which earned us the title of Chef. It was just in general a weekend of driving around the mountains, eating and talking. I learned that even though it is good to have set activities, these activities were just there to promote communication.

Hello Everyone! My name is Courtney Ip, Vice President of Circle K International at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo! I am so excited to take our club to new and soaring heights and connect with all of the amazing Circle K clubs in Paradise this year! A little about myself: I am a 4th year (woo!) Biology/Pre-Med student at UH Hilo who loves travelling for the food, reading for the adventure, and watching anime/playing video games for the geeky conversations afterward! As you are all aware, Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawai'i has erupted, destroying hundreds of homes and changing the lives of families forever. However, many within the community have kokua for those affected by the eruption. CKI at UHH has had the opportunity to volunteer with Pu'uhonua o Puna, a place filled with donations of food, clothes, and supplies for those who have been displaced by the lava; a place of refuge. It is definitely a humbling experience and I hope that the spirit of generosity and aloha there will continue for this coming year and beyond! I believe that everyone has a little bit of hero inside of them. Yes, even you!! The theme for our club this year is SUPERHILOS! My entire board has been crafting our hero-selves complete with our power, hero name, and even hero costume this summer! What would your hero look like? I would love to hear about it! I look forward to be meeting and working with you all this coming term!! Go beyond, PLUS ULTRA! Best, Courtney Ip

I initially joined CKI as a way to find more opportunities to be social among the students of CSUSM and seek out like-minded people who have a passion for helping the community. Not much was expected so, if the overall experienced panned out negatively, there would not be much emotional stress placed upon myself. Coming from a few semesters of trying to adjust to the civilian life postmilitary and the various mental health symptoms that accrued over the years, I found it extremely important to find a group who can accept others even in their rawest of forms. After spending a number of months with CKI, I believe I have found such people. Each member deals with their own emotional, physical, and mental struggles, but at the end of the day there is a level of support which transcends traditional merits that can not possibly be provided by our amazing college’s faculty and services. As such, it is these distinct connections that are made through our deep desire for the service of others, the strength that erupts within to seek out achievements for the greater good, and the optimism it takes to remember that even the smallest of organizations are definitely capable of prosperity to flourish further than the eyes can see. Now that I am a part of CKI, I know in my heart and soul that not only have the hopes of finding emphatic and community driven individuals are found, but also true, lifelong friendships whom will always have each others support for any possible endeavors that may arise in the foreseeable future.

Hi Hello Paradise Division! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Joshua Ranario and I proudly serve as the Capital Division Lieutenant Governor. Our division includes the following schools: CSU Chico, Sacramento State, Folsom Lake College, Sacramento City College, Lake Tahoe Community College, San Joaquin Delta College, UN Reno, UC Davis, and the University of the Pacific. With divisional borders extending to a grand diameter of 150 miles, there is no mountain or terrain that can ever separate us! This past month, we have recently hosted our July DCM Member Retreat: Brighter than the Stars, where members had the opportunity to come out to Indian Springs and compete in various activities in their respective teams. On top of that, our Stockton Circle K Clubs, University of the Pacific and San Joaquin Delta College, hosted their annual week-long Salvation Army Kids College. Members had the opportunity to become mentors or teachers to elementary school students, teaching them various topics to encourage fun learning and an open atmosphere. As we continue through the term, I encourage you all to reach out and meet someone new! Remember, it only takes a simple hello to change someone’s life! Take the time you have in CKI to cherish these moments with the Ohana you love! Leave your imprint in the world we serve! I hope to see you around Paradise!

CKIx Circle K International Convention was an amazing experience. Although flight complications led to me missing the first day, the rest of the week was extremely productive, insightful, and exciting. I was able to learn about the administrative side of Circle K through the House of Delegates, spend 10 hours in Chicago humidity to help the community during the Day of Service, and learn more about what I can do for my home club through workshops. But I think the most memorable aspect of the event was all the people I met. Being surrounded by so many like-minded, serviceoriented people really reminded me of the love I have for Circle K and the Kiwanis Family as a whole. During CKIx, I was lucky enough to have been selected to serve on two CKIx committees: Resolutions Committee and Elections Committee. As Resolutions Committee Chair, I was able to build a close relationship with two other members from British Columbia and Indiana. This small, yet diverse, team filled my time with laughter and smiles, and I even left them with some CNH memorabilia from our spirit packs. The elections committee, while larger, also helped me develop budding friendships. I even got to befriend the recently elected International Vice President, Julia Dressler! Even my service team was filled with a variety of people — with representatives from all over the US and even from the Caribbean, it's hard not to befriend people. Finally, I can't forget about all of the people I got to meet from CNH. From the district dinner to sitting together during awards night (shout out to my great-grand predecessor, Esther Wang, for getting Distinguished District Chair!), my CNH pride has truly grown. I'm looking forward to next year's CKIx in Orlando, and the CKIx after that in Vegas (Go CNH!)!

why Pair of Di ce? EDA
I’m still shaking a bit from making all the pages, but I wanted to make sure this letter was the last addition to the newsletter. There was a lot of heart and soul put into each and every page, with hours upon hours of thoughtful design and creative pumping. I had to find out what photos belonged where, what shape they would be carved in, what colors to choose from, many more details to draw out. Despite the long process, my one goal was to create a newsletter that was both informative and fun to flip through, and I hope I accomplished just that. Even if making the newsletter consumes my life, I absolutely love it. It combines my love for graphic design with my passion for service, all in one neat bow tie. But why Pair of Dice? I chose the name Pair of Dice because I enjoy seeing the world as it unravels around me, a watcher’s journey. Like the pair of dice plushy you keep in your car, doesn’t drive, but follows you on your adventures, watching where you go.
44
CHA S N TIO A L RE C I L That’s me, PUB because I can’t drive. Also, I love puns.
IR
Above all, I want to say thank you. It is truly an honor to be serving as your Paradise Public Relations Chair this year and presenting me with the opportunity to create these wonderful newsletters. It goes without saying that Paradise brings upon a whole new meaning to the word “inclusiveness”. What was the word? Oh, right, it was Kākou. Serving as as both Co-Marketing Director for Masquerade Ball and the Graphics and Programs Chair for DCON Committee, it is safe to say I will be pretty busy these upcoming weeks. But as the Public Relations Chair, I can now connect myself to schools across the district better than I ever could, see what they are accomplishing, and discover what inspires them to do so. That is my source of inspiration, and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired as long as there’s service going around. With that being said, I sincerely hope you’ve had fun taking a look at the newsletter, and I’ll see you in the next one!
