Please allow me this moment to thank you for your hard work, community support and generous donations to the mission of Restoring the Bay Every Day in 2014. This year, our focus was Terning the Tide of coastal habitat destruction in Tampa Bay’s estuary, and with great success! To all of us at Tampa Bay Watch, the bay is our home and it’s worth protecting. It is a nursery for hundreds of species. It’s a unique environment where salt and fresh water mingle to create the perfect environment for fishing, nature trekking and bird watching. It’s an outdoor classroom where we give thousands of children the opportunity to get their hands dirty and feet wet. It’s also an economic asset to not only our community, but the surrounding counties, making the quality of life in Tampa Bay unparalleled. These are only a few of the reasons we dedicate ourselves to restoring and protecting the bay through scientific and educational programs. These reasons are why we ask you to become a member of Tampa

Bay Watch today, renew your membership, or make an annual contribution. Your 100% taxdeductible onation marks the end of a destructive era in our estuary and continues Terning the Tide for a new year of marine restoration and education in Tampa Bay! Peter A. Clark- President Thanks so much for the wonderful article Steve wrote in the December issue of Paradise News about SPB Support Our Troops. It was so good to see that some of us have not forgotten about our troops serving in Afghanistan and now in Iraq again. It is hard to believe we have been sending boxes to our troops for almost 8 years and have seen postage go from $8.49 to $14.95 and donations dwindle because when people no loner see it in the news they believe it is not happening. Thanks for keeping our program front and center with this great article. And thanks to Renee and Peter for printing it. Terri Finnerty, V P - SPB Support Our Troops, Inc.

ESPN Bitcoin Bowl organizers held press events at sunset on the roof of the new Zamora Hotel. On Dec. 11 they introduced the competing teams and the sponsors. Here Paradise NEWS publishers Peter & Renee Roos pose with Jim Marshall of Sandler Training, Tampa Bay.

...Ken Hurley passed away on the eve of Christmas Eve, the second Patriarch of Pass-a-Grille to leave us in 2014. Gone, but not forgotten. …UCF (9-4) and NC State (8-5) played in the 2015 bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl the day after Christmas at the Trop. Junior quarterback Jacoby Brissett led the NC State Wolfpack to victory in the ACC’s first appearance in the annual St. Petersburg Bowl. Named NC State’s game MVP, Brissett completed 15-of26 passes for 262 yards and a touchdown. Matt Dayes added a pair of rushing scores to lead the Wolfpack to a 34-27 win over the University of Central Florida. While the day started grey, it cleared up into a beautiful sunset and perfect days. The bowl helps fill a bit of a pre-holiday void at some resorts. The Zamora, Sirata and Alden were host hotels this year. Madeira Beach hosted the Beach Bash December 24th. ...This edition of Tidbits includes a recap of some previous tidbits for our seasonal residents and those who may have missed it. ... Seen Billy Moore lately? He and his wife Carla have been cruising quite a bit. We ran into them at Beach Hair Affair on Corey before the holidays and received the picture of the two of them with our December issue, on Christmas morning in the square outside the 400-year-old Cathedral San Francisco, in San Juan. …Fresh Markets Abound. The proliferation of local fresh markets seems like it could be part of a global trend. An article by Sophie Langley in the Australian Food News (AFN) ‘Thought for Food Newsletter’ says that 14% of responding Australians typically shop for their fresh vegetables at a farmers’ market. Following a dozen years of success at downtown St. Petersburg’s Saturday morning market, other fresh markets have sprung up in recent years on Corey Avenue on Sundays, Gulfport’s art district on Tuesdays, Madeira Beach and the “Edge District” at 930 Central Ave. on Wednesdays and Treasure Island’s Community Park on Fridays. Another beach community Sunday Morning Market quietly opened December 7 at 19305 Gulf Blvd. on the grounds of the Indian Shores Town Hall center. The Corey Area Business Association (CABA) hired Tampa Bay Markets to run the Corey market this year. Cage free eggs direct from the farm, fresh baked artesian breads, plants, live music and a food court are just a few of the features of the new market

that spans two city blocks, with a minimum of 60 booths, according to market operators, who also run markets in Tampa and Dunedin. Mr. I Got-Em is there in top hat and tails with his wonderful bar-b-q and there’s plenty of farm fresh, organic and sustainable produce available. On a beautiful final Sunday of the year, we brunched at Jackie’s Bistro, strolled the market, and wished for the sake of the great merchants that you were there. A full-time fresh market can also be found at St. Pete Beach Produce & Deli, 6355 Gulf Blvd., with a Greek & Armenian flavor, open daily from about 9am – 8pm. Great salads & sandwiches, including a terrific Gyro for just $5.99 any day, fruits, salads and platters, Boars Head Meats and Cheeses as well as market fresh produce can be found here year-round to eat in or take out. The homemade hummus is awesome, as is the fresh Quinoa and other salads prepared daily with farm fresh produce. Odi’s deli prices are surprisingly low, often dollars per JANUARY 2015

The Coral Reef property will initially provide additional parking for hotel employees, which will free up more parking at Guy Harvey for Rumfish Grill patrons, with future development plans yet to be determined. …A recent Appeals Court decision that once again scuttled the city’s new comprehensive plan very likely put the property on the market at favorable rates. The prior owner/ developer had reportedly signed a contract for a new 300 room hotel on the site in 2006 or 2007 that could have been operating by 2010 as I recall from presentations. Owners of the bar, Jim and Charlotte Hunter, are no strangers to John’s Pass as they own and operate Wild Time Caribbean Trading Company, a retail boutique selling Margaritaville and Life Is Good

merchandise for over 30 years. Jim and Charlotte, as an authorized Margaritaville retailer, felt that it was a natural fit to have a tiki bar featuring Land Shark Lager and a selection of “frozen concoctions” right next to their retail store. The name Deck of Indecision was inspired from a Jimmy Buffett song and the Hunters thought the name fit the bar’s Margaritaville theme as well as the vibe that is John’s Pass Village and Boardwalk. Something to Think About

On December 7, 2005, the life of Christine Olson was changed forever. Christine’s daughter Tiffiany Olson was involved in a traffic crash on U.S. 19 in Manatee County, Florida. Tiffiany received fatal injuries when the motorcycle she was a passenger on collided with another vehicle. Ms. Olson was not notified of Tiffiany’s passing for several hours and was not able to say her last goodbyes. Ms. Olson was heartbroken. She then found the silver lining to an otherwise dark cloud. Ms. Olson, with the assistance of State Representative Bill Galvano from Bradenton District 68, began pushing for emergency information to be added to a person’s driver’s license or identification card. Since the information could not be printed directly on a license, Ms. Olson and Rep. Galvano contacted the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) and took the next best route--to have the information included in the D.A.V.I.D. (Driver And Vehicle Information Database) system, which is a secured database used by most law enforcement agencies in the State of Florida. Ms. Olson and her family, and DHSMV, are urging all licensed drivers in the State of Florida to input their information so families can be contacted more quickly when a family member is seriously injured or killed in a traffic crash. Ms. Olson and her family have struggled to make emergency information readily available for law enforcement and their efforts have paid off so far. There have been thousands of hits to the website in the short period of time it has been active. To inform families first - Our mission is to improve notification of loved ones by law enforcement. When tragedy strikes . . . family and loved ones need to know. Go to www.ToInformFamiliesFirst.org.

Paradise NEWS PUBLISHER & EDITOR Peter Roos ............................sales@paradisenewsfl.com

From the Publishers... Happy, Healthy NEW YEAR to All Paradise NEWS Readers! You can’t say we weren’t warned! I was very young when I first wished I was old enough to do something I wasn’t ready for. I probably wanted to stay up until midnight on New Year’s Eve. I was told not to be in a hurry to grow up; that those days would come all too soon. Our grandparents warned us that time seems to go faster the older we get. It seems they were right again. I do not really believe time has speeded up. It still seems to take forever for certain traffic lights to change, but, at the end of a day. it seems there weren’t enough hours. At the end of a month, or a year, it seems like it just raced by. It doesn’t seem fair that as we pass midlife and start down the slippery side, that our perception of time changes like this. At the same time, it seems that our desire for rest overcomes our need to get the most out of every day, and we find ourselves retiring earlier in the evenings, or trying to catch a nap during the day. Some of the busiest people I know are retirees. Perhaps it has to do with the people we know. People settling on the barrier islands are by and large an extraordinary group of folks. They believe in getting the most out of their lives, treating themselves to winters full of “Sun, Sand and Postcard Sunsets” as Frank Hurley named his first book about our islands. Most beach lovers treat themselves to a week or two here a year, if they are lucky. Those of us who have found a way to live here most of our lives get to taking it for granted ... Don’t 1 Frank Hurley’s brother Ken shared some kind words about Frank when we celebrated his life in February of this year. In December it was Ken’s to leave us behind. They say you’re getting old when you attend more funerals than weddings. All I can say is I wish I would get invited to more weddings. The lesson is not to take life for granted. Live each day, week, month and year in such a way that you can be proud of yourself. Think about how you want to be remembered and follow the golden rule. Remember you only need enough stuff to get you through this life. You can’t take it with you, and no one is keeping score. Take time to walk on the beach if you are able, to enjoy the sunset. The sun is not setting any faster than it used to. It is hard to believe that we have been publishing Paradise NEWS for 20 years. Costs have gone up, and 2015 is a year when we will have to make some major changes in the way we do business. The post office is changing the way it handles bulk mail, causing further delays in delivery. We are responding by changing our mailing class. It means some people who have been getting Paradise News in the mail will have to pick it up in their condo lobbies, their library or their clubhouse. For others, vice-versa. We think it will work out for the best, but it may cause some confusion. If you want to be sure it keeps coming in your mail, as early as possible, buy a subscription. Or sign up on our website to receive it online. Time goes on. Things change. Don’t say you weren’t warned. Peter, Renee and the gang that tirelessly bring you the News from Paradise.

More Tidbits selection process unfolds. On Monday, December 15, the City of St. Petersburg unveiled eagerly awaited eight new design concepts for the city Pier. Each team received a $30,000 stipend to submit initial design concepts, complete with reports, renderings, cost estimates and descriptions. The concepts incorporate a variety of features, such as a waterfall, lagoons, and terraces. Of the eight submissions, six utilize the current inverted pyramid structure, while the others propose an entirely new shape for the city’s landmark. The concepts will undergo a technical review to reveal any issues with cost, construction or permitting. The public will be invited to see the designs, hear from the design teams, and take a non-binding public survey, results of which will go to the Pier Selection Committee. The committee will then make its recommendation to the Mayor and City Council in March. A contract is expected by late May, with groundbreaking this fall. Images of the designs, brief descriptions and additional background information are available by going to www.newstpetepier.com website and downloading images and information. …With great fanfare, the Locale Market recently opened December 17 at Sundial in downtown St. Petersburg. “The twostory, 20,000-square-foot collaboration between celebrity chefs Michael

Mina and Don Pintabona was a smorgasbord of sights and smells, with 11 different kitchens going full tilt to offer an experience unprecedented in St. Petersburg.” according to Tampa Bay Times food critic Laura Reilly. Catch the video on their website and it’s almost like being there for the opening. …Another gastronomic adventure, IL Ritorno, is celebrating its first anniversary downtown. IL Ritorno brings a new taste of fresh Italian cuisine to the community by introducing new, interesting flavors and combinations that add elegance to a traditionally rustic genre. Chef David Benstock opened Wolfgang Puck’s Spago in Colorado, worked at Michelin Star restaurant The Modern in New York City, Scarpetta in Miami and Boca in Tampa. He also traveled through Europe training under some of the best chefs in the world before making his return home to open Il Ritorn at 449 Central Avenue in St. Petersburg. With a successful and prosperous year behind them, Chef Benstock and his wife, Erica have plans for expansion on the horizon. “Turning away reservations is the greatest compliment to David and the culinary team, but we never want to turn away guests,” says Erica Benstock. “We are adding more seating to our outdoor space and our catering business hasdoubled in six months.”

New CROWDER BROTHERS HARDWARE

St. Pete Beach Welcomes

A new Hardware by Peter Roos

St. Pete Beach’s long-awaited new hardware store opened in the traditional location at 320 75th Avenue to rave reviews in early December. Stocked “to the gills”with an amazing variety of merchandise, Crowder Brothers True Value hardware has been worth the wait. They appear to stock everything you might imagine a hardware store should carry, but they do not stop there. Reportedly hot sellers before the holidays were the “Green Egg” line of high end bar-b-q’s, and the case full of sunglasses, a little better quality than those sold in most pharmacies and beach supply stores. Much of the merchandise we used to get in Kmart in South Pasadena is now available on the beach, from well stocked garden and pet departments to most everything for the home. They also plan a gold and jewelry department that is yet to be stocked. Owner J.C. Crowder gave his best crew the opportunity to come to the new beach store, to ensure they would be knowledgable and helpful for us. He says to watch for ads and inserts in upcoiming issues of Paradise NEWS. In the meantime, here is a peak inside. For questions call 727 - 873-6911. JANUARY 2015

The Florida Craftsman Gallery has been renewed, refreshed and reopened as Florida CraftArt. They just completed a magnificent renovation of our St. Petersburg headquarters. They are looking to keep the momentum going for the next phase of the renewal. Six terrific exhibitions with expanded programming, showcasing the best in fine craft, are planned for 2015. (Mindy Solomon is curating a Voodoo-themed exhibition!) ● The elevator was installed in 1941 and "modernized" in 1969. We have a great opportunity to finally replace the elevator with a matching grant from the State Division of Cultural Affairs. ● In partnership with USF, we are launching a major project to identify the best fine craft artists of Florida. Help bring great art from all 67 Florida counties to Florida CraftArt. Last year, your support initiated an amazing transformation. This year’s goal is to raise $60,000. Mahaffey’s 50 Anniversary th

Through the Lens exhibit spotlights Mahaffey past, present and future The Mahaffey’s 50th Anniversary season begins with a look at both where we’ve been, and where we’re going. Through the Lens: The Mahaffey at 50 – A Photographic Celebration of The Arts in St. Petersburg is an historic and entertaining timeline, featuring more than 70 canvas-mounted photographs of five decades of dazzling artists performing on our stage. Opening reception is 6:30-9pm, Thursday, Jan. 8, Through the Lens will be on view in The Mahaffey’s second-floor atrium gallery throughout 2015. In addition, it can be viewed during all publicly-ticketed events. Co-sponsored by the Tampa Bay Times, the exhibition of oversized photographs

consists of vintage images from the Times archives, dating back to the early 1960s. The earliest photo is of classical guitar great Carlos Montoya, taken at what was then known as the Bayfront Theater. on October 1st, 1965. The most recent shows Lyle Lovett and His Acoustic Group onstage this past Nov. 19. The January 8 reception is in conjunction with the inaugural Second Thursdays on the Plaza event. Featuring the best in local and regional live music, these free monthly celebrations will be held on the scenic outdoor plaza that links the Mahaffey with the Dali Museum. Consisting of a 7,500-seat arena and a theater with a capacity of 2,000-plus, the City of St. Petersburg’s Bayfront Center complex opened on May 6, 1965. A second photographic timeline in Through the Lens depicts the construction process, from the initial dredging along Tampa Bay to the massive renovations that created the beautiful Mahaffey Theater as we know it today.

The timeline includes many of the biggest performers of their respective eras, including popular singers such as Johnny Mathis, Dionne Warwick, Ray Charles and Liza Minnelli; stage and screen giants Jack Benny, Gene Kelly, Red Skelton and Carol Channing; rockers Chrissie Hynde, R.E.M., The Knack and Don Henley; comedians George Carlin, Steve Martin and Rodney Dangerfield; jazz and blues artists Sarah Vaughan, B.B. King and Wynton Marsalis; and perennial Bayfront favorites Fred Waring, Sandler & Young and the St. Petersburg Civic Opera. Those with fond memories of the Bayfront Arena, which was torn down in 2004, will find Through the Lens a nostalgic treat: A mini-exhibit focuses on the spectacular entertainers who performed there over the decades, including Elvis Presley, Liberace and Bruce Springsteen.

TA X NEWS by Clare Garaty

‘Tis the Season...Tax Season The decorations are packed away and now here comes tax season and with it some of the biggest changes in preparing and filing taxes we have seen for awhile. While some of the changes regarding the Affordable Care Act have been in the pipeline for a couple of years now, we were once again left waiting until mid-December 2014 to see if the government was going to extend some of the tax breaks that had expired in 2013. The biggest change this year is the requirement for all taxpayers to either have health insurance or pay a penalty at tax time. For those taxpayers that bought insurance through the Marketplace, a new form will be issued by January 31, 2015, form 1095A, which will allow qualifying taxpayers to receive a credit on their taxes. You must have this form in order to claim the credit. If you didn’t get insurance, then you may be exempt. There are eight exemptions provided for by the IRS and a further eight hardship exemptions that you may qualify for. If you have no insurance and not exempt, then there is a penalty for each member of your household that is not covered. Be warned, while these penalties are not aimed to be excessive in 2014, in 2015 they increase significantly and again in 2016.

Our late -reaking tax extenders include some old favorites. The $250 educator’s deduction is back, so for all those hardworking teachers who spend their own money on school supplies, you can whoop it up for your $250 tax deduction. Also, the deduction for education related expenses is reinstated. This can help if you are unable to claim an education credit. We don’t pay state income tax in Florida, so being able to deduct a sales tax deduction is a big help for us here. This deduction had also expired but was extended through 2014. For our business clients, bonus depreciation of 50% is back and the s179 allowance is increased from $25,000. Both these provisions help small business in our area to grow their business by buying the assets they need and then save at tax time. The tax extensions were only made for one year, so this time next year we will be in the same boat, trying to plan in the dark. If you would like any more information on any of the tax extensions or how you will be affected by the Affordable Care Act – please call us at:

COMMERCIAL MIGRATION…A SHORT STORY I moved to Miami after the USAF in 1965. As a young real estate agent I helped Miami grow. I then watched migration to Naples, then Long Boat Key/Sarasota, and now to our Pinellas Barrier Islands. Each migration brought higher prices and re-development of outdated properties. Our barrier Islands have the last stretch of white sandy beaches before the Panhandle… five hours away. Our 16 beach towns covering 27 miles of beaches are poised for redevelopment. If the U.S. economy strengthens this will happen quickly; if not, it will develop anyway. There will always be rich people worldwide who want to live on or near beautiful beaches. No beach real estate in the world has higher overall value than Florida beach real estate. Future flood insurance increases will precipitate teardown of pre-firm properties...75% of all barrier island properties are below the flood plain and

are candidates for re-building. The hundreds of outdated motels and apartments may be rebuilt, rezoned or consolidated with bigger players. Drive through Long Boat Key or Naples Beach to see what our local future may hold. High-end concierge rentals, new flagged hotels, massive beach mansions and new, built-up homes that cash flow for owners are sprouting up in our progressive towns. Short-term illegal vacation rentals are being reduced, giving more revenue to legal properties. Our net net-zero energy Eco-villages of Madeira Beach are examples of legal short-term rental cottages that can give positive cash flow to owners. Go to planetetgreenergy.com to check them out. Eco-village II is under contract, with Village III and IV coming soon. Our 16 beach communities are seeing migration to dynamic downtown St. Petersburg. They are

now creating new core developments to compete. When done, our island downtowns will have a trump card…27 miles of white sandy beaches a short walk away. If you own vacant land, motels, hotels, rental apartments or property zoned for short-term rentals, contact me for some creative options to maximize your investment. Once I earn your trust and evaluate your property, you may choose to investigate further. Our beaches have a very bright future. Can you be part of it? Find out how. GET REAL ABOUT PROPERTY Travels Through Real Estate Law

BY THOMAS A. BRODERSEN, ESQ.

FORCLOSURE DEFENSE Foreclosure defense is all about the details. When you have the burden of proof, as the banks do when they sue homeowners, they need to have a mastery of a mass of details. In our experience, they simply don’t! Lawsuits vary from the most basic rear-end car crash, on one hand, to complex, multi-party aviation or product liability cases on the other. A foreclosure ranks much closer to the deep end of that pool than the rear-ender. If you have any doubts, get out the mortgage on your home, and start reading. We’ll talk about it in the morning when you wake up. In addition to the basic terms of the transaction and the mass of details accounted for (or not!) at closing, there is the history of the loan, including all of your payments, and deposits into and payments out of escrow (for taxes, insurance, etc.). There are the multiple times your loan servicing rights were transferred from one entity to another (of which you were informed), along with the times the loan itself was sold (which was actively hidden from you). Chances are, a lot was going on in your life, personal and financial, during this long period, including your employ-

ment history, business affairs, health profile, and family additions and losses. You and your business were probably impacted (directly or indirectly) by the worst ecological disaster ever to befall the United States, the massive, (felonious) ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico brought to us by British Petroleum. It may be decades before we truly know the extent of that catastrophe. But if you were in business on one of the Gulf of Mexico barrier islands, you were profoundly affected.

www.bentleydenight.com

And that doesn’t even begin to address the worst economic dislocation since the Great Depression: The bank-induced foreclosure crisis, complete with widespread (again, felonious) predatory lending, that flavor of mortgage fraud known as robo-signing, and the unspeakable administrative incompetence of the banks and servicers in dealing with you, their customers. So, it’s not just about “are you current on your payments,” is it? Some people think it’s just that simple, and some of them wear black robes. Someone has to stand up in Court, and reestablish that perspective on your behalf, don’t they? That’s what foreclosure defense attorneys do!

Inshore- Sheepshead have become plentiful around Johns Pass. Dylan Hubbard and his friends were fishing Johns Pass Bridge around the pilings catching big sheeps on small pieces of shrimp. At slack tide the Mangrove Snapper became dominant at the bridge snapping up our shrimp. The Redfish have been thinner inside Johns Pass but the Trout have made a comeback into the area. Don’s Dock reports that Snook are still biting well at night, but have thinned out due to the cooler weather. The full moon will also cause the fish and bait to spread out. However, a new moon when it’s chilly will load up local dock lights not only for warmth but also for the bait attracting lights as well! When it’s cool, work your artificial slower because the fish will be more sluggish and typically deeper in the water column. Near shore - The Grey Snapper and Grouper have pushed in close recently. Half-day trips go past 10 miles, so we run into more Scamp and Porgies. The Red Grouper and Gags (season closed) have become a nuisance since they are hard to avoid due Eddie Sumrall aka Jig-head Ed from West Palm Beach Florida showing off a monster kingfish from the recent 39hour trip from Hubbard's Marina

to their high numbers close to shore! Hogfish have luckily not closed this year in federal waters and we are picking up quite a few daily as the water cools. They are loving the live shrimp. A recent 39-hour trip tore up the big Snapper! The large Mangrove Snapper was nearly 9 lbs again and second and third place were not too much behind. We also had some monster Porgies and plentiful Kingfish. The Kings were hitting the trolling tackle mostly but we did get a large one while flat-lining as well. The Beeliners were hot this trip and we brought in nearly 300 of them! Check out our Facebook page for photos and videos from this recent successful fishing trip with Hubbard’s Marina! STATE the CITIES 20 1 5 STORY STEVE TRAIMAN

Cities of St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island and Madeira Beach are looking ahead to a bright new year. Their respective key executives highlight their financial condition

and major issues.

St. Pete Beach Mayor Maria Lowe was elected last March and new City Manager Wayne Saunders was hired and began in early December. “We’ve reached the tipping point to move forward and put the city in a good place,” the Mayor observed. “The primary issue is our vital infrastructure needs. Sewers are at the top of the list and under the Court’s consent order, some are completed with others identified and budgeted for completion. We have a full plan in process and will be well ahead of the consent order timeline. Pump Station Number 1 at Boca Ciega has been completed and Pump Station Number 2 at Gulf Boulevard and 55th Avenue is almost finished. An engineering contract was approved at the Commission meeting on December 16 for Pump Station Number 3 in Lazaretto Park. Also budgeted are funds for an Inflow & Infiltration (I & I) study to determine ground water seepage into the system that costs many needed dollars.

“On the litigation front that has cost SPB taxpayers over $2 million the last 10 years, the Second Court of Appeals upheld that the City had violated the Sunshine Law, and on the procedural issue on notifications, the City filed a motion for Rehearing and Clarification that was denied.” She added that litigant James Anderson and his attorney Ken Weiss appear willing to compromise in bringing the main lawsuit to a conclusion, in a sense of cooperation and responsibility shared by our city. “We are discussing some options to move forward and I’m very hopeful about the situation,” she said.“We’re all extremely grateful to new City Attorney Andy Dickman whose goal is to keep the city out of court and litigation. I’ve personally learned that it’s always better to handle problems in-house for a decision to benefit the whole city. Once the redevelopment issue has been settled, there are a number of proposals ready to go.” On the move to the Sheriff’s Office

from the former Police Department for public safety, the Mayor emphasized that most residents are very positive: “We’ve never felt an absence of constant patrolling and policing with a seamless changeover that was enveloped by the community.” Saunders added, “Our budget has been substantially affected, and the savings go a long way in helping us address other issues. The pension situation has also been positively affected, although some former police opted to stay in our system Deputies assigned here have embraced the community.” Saunders met with consultants in mid-December to get cranked up on the possible conversion of City Hall to the new Library, with City Hall staff moving to the former Police Department building. They had formerly determined that City Hall will work fine for the Library, and by February should have a final answer on a City staff move to the Police building. They have determined that the JANUARY 2015

a d i o r l F d n l a s I e r s u a Tr e building is structurally sound, with all non-load bearing walls easy to take down for needed staff space.” The Mayor emphasized,“The real challenge is to be sure the moves are financially prudent for the whole city. Our Library really is a media and arts center – it needs to be a modernized, multifunctional facility as an investment for the next 15 to 30 years. It is truly a Pinellas County Library and we’ve got a consortium going forward that includes South Pasadena and Tierra Verde who also want to make it a viable part of a truly community library for all three cities.” Saunders added,“Our library in Clermont joined with the county

and local community college to provide expanded facilities for the entire community. I spent some time with Library Administrator Phyllis Ruscella and was very impressed with the proposed plans.” The Mayor’s short-term goals are headed by completing necessary improvements in the sewer and stormwater systems, and working with the County on the potable water system. ‘We are budgeted to support these efforts, so residents won’t have to suffer any added costs for our very aggressive capital improvements,’ she said.“Also in the works this year are the Blind Pass Road stormwater project that has been about five years in the planning, with design funds committed, and Pass-a-Grille repairs that may start this spring. “Mid-term goals are topped by a new compre L to R: new City Manager Wayne Saunders & Mayor Maria Lowe.

hensive plan for redevelopment so residents will know we can and maintain the character of our community while helping our businesses to flourish.” Saunders added,“We have a plan in the works to see how quickly this can be done.” The Mayor continued, “The I & I study addresses the PAG Way situation as the old ceramic pipes are very degraded, with the concrete connections breaking down and allowing water to seep in. This decreases capacity, adding to higher costs “Long-term I’m looking for a safe and healthy home for our residents that also is a quintessential destination location on the Gulf Beaches.” Saunders added,“My prime goal is to understand the overall fiscal and strategic situation of the city, and getting to know the Commission and our great city staff. We’re looking for the best ways to meet our needs and implement the course that’s been set. There are a lot of positive things in the works and I’m confident we’ll get these goals accomplished.”

Treasure Island Mayor Bob Minning and City Manager Reid Silverboard have a very positive outlook. The Mayor said,“Overall we’re very sound financially, with a March ballot issue for increased height and density in planned development zones. These are the west side of Gulf Blvd. between 104th Avenue (Gulffront Park) to 119th Avenue (Marriott Residence Inn) and north of 127th Avenue on both sides of Gulf Blvd., including the current Gators property.” Silverboard added,“We have a number of redevelopment proposals. Included is the Buccaneer property across from the Gulf Blvd. Shell station that was withdrawn as they needed more height. Another is the current Gators property whose owner also has land across Gulf Blvd. We know others are ready to redevelop existing properties once added height and density are possible.” On the vital issue of the drawbridge repairs, Silverboard reported that all 16 cylinders were rehabbed and reinstalled with a city cost of about $220,000. There was a flaw in the

original design, with that cost to be paid by the contractor.“We’re in the process of fine tuning the software to readjust the span operation so they open and close together,” he explained.“We’ve also done normal major maintenance including concrete repairs and repainting of the drawbridge and other two fixed bridges for about $800,000. Another $150,000 is budgeted for hydraulic maintenance, computer system repairs and lighting issues. Additional maintenance will come later.”

Related to a possible shift from the current city Police Department to the Sheriff’s Office, Minning observed,“There is very little resident demand. One petition got about 170 names of the 5,500 registered voters. The Commission has said that without a demonstrated groundswell of interest, there is no reason for any change at this time.” Added Silverboard,“Our bottomline savings would be much less both initially and annually than that in St. Pete Beach. It would take a three-fifths vote by the Commission to disband the Police Dept. and then negotiate with the Sheriff’s Office

The Mayor noted that current millage is 3.3368, the same as fiscal 2013-14: “One-tenth mill is dedicated to fund Mayor Bob Minning, left, and City Manager Reid Silverboard major maintenance, another one-tenth for other infrastructure rehab and maintenance, and for the past three years .045 mill to replace the Capri and Palms bridges, and rehab the Central Beach Trail, with pledged utility tax receipts.” Silverboard added, “We provide more services with our millage.” JANUARY 2015

for safety and security. The issue last came up in 2006, with a big resident response to keep our police.” Looking ahead, the Mayor said, “We’ve also seen a good revival in our residential areas, with new homes and a lot of rehabbing and expansion projects. We’re working with the City of St. Petersburg to complete a bike trail connection from the Beach to the Bay along the Pinellas Trail.

Silverboard summed up,“Our city has immense potential, with some of the best public beaches on the barrier islands. We have an engaged citizenry and a progressive Commission, with all the resources for a continuing bright outlook.”

Madeira Beach

City Manager Shane Crawford & Finance Director Vince Tenaglia are working with Mayor Travis Palladeno and L to R: City Manager Shane Crawford & Mayor Travis Palladeno the Commission to keep the momentum going strong.“Madeira Beach is a place you want to be,” Crawford emphasized. “Our tourism season used to peak from mid-February and end with backto-school in August but now it extends into October. When I came here about three years ago the town had fallen askew with not much done on infrastructure or fees.

I hired Vince about three months into my first year and together we worked closely with the Commission. Parking is our life’s blood and we had one of the lowest meter fees on the beaches. These were adjusted and now our overall revenue is up due to increased fees and the end of the recession. “Our municipal building complex is almost completed, with $10 million in construction costs. It was our first bond issue in many years, with a goal to maintain debt service on the $4.5 million in bonds to $300,000 or less annually. The rest of the funding was in cash from the city. The Recreation Center staff should move in by early January, with the ballfields nearing completion in February. City Hall should be ready to go by early March as well as the new Fire Station. It’s been a challenge but we should have some of the best facilities on the Beaches by the end of the first quarter of 2015. The Archibald Park renovation is complete and the Snack Shack and Beach Services have new concessionaires who both are doing very well.

“We’ve also seen a lot of new development, with the new, larger Publix open on the Tom Stuart Causeway, and the nearby new Marriott by early February. Jim Holton, who owns the former Leverocks site, has several proposals for mixed use development; Bob Lyons has a new 12-unit condo going up just south of Kitty Stuart Park; a new CVS is going up across from Archibald Park on the old Mobil station site; and there’s the possibility of a new flagship hotel in the Johns Pass area.” On the city’s infrastructure needs, Crawford calls it “a real challenge. Along Gulf Blvd., from 150th to the Johns Pass Bridge, we hope to use County beautification dollars to bury utilities under the sidewalks instead of ‘trenching’ alongside, to save costly easement purchases. If this doesn’t work, the Commission might fund only east to west wires running under the sidewalks, leaving wires running only north and south.”

In terms of storm water repairs, he said,“Al Carrier from Deuel Associates has done a superb job in assisting the city to bring us up to speed on our ‘triage’ list. Our underground infrastructures as well as our roads need attention, as curbing is unusable in many areas. The city got a $1.2 million matching grant from SWFWMD to start the vital repair work.” Tenaglia noted,“From a financial viability standpoint, our city fares very well. Our millage rate had been 1.89 for some time – one of the lowest in the County. We raised taxes for the first time last year (from a 1.89 millage rate to 1.99). We got mostly praise from residents who see the results of our efforts and that the Commission is responsibly using their tax dollars for good projects.” Looking ahead, Crawford is very positive.“The Commission is grabbing the issues and no longer ‘kicking the can down the road.

’The staff understands their respective roles and department heads will be rewarded in the new year.” Mayor Palladeno summed up: “During the last four years we’ve seen a lot of improvements in our City. This includes infrastructure improvements, beautification, older properties being renovated and new houses built on lots vacant for years. This is not the result of one person’s efforts, but was accomplished by the City working together as a whole. The Commission and employees have a ‘can do’ attitude with the ability to get things done efficiently. There’s been a push to think outside the box in bringing more revenue into the City through more grants, promoting our City to create more parking revenue, and attracting new businesses. We are a family-friendly community and have been able to attract young families to move here, buy homes and create a better Madeira Beach for all to enjoy.” PN

Ever Heard of SHIPWORMS? Study says shipworms could be new biofuel source. The tubular creatures are weird-looking clams found around the world, including Tampa Bay Eckerd College Assistant Professor of Marine Science and Biology Koty Sharp, Ph.D., co-authored a research paper that is getting national attention because its findings point to a new way of producing environmentally friendly biofuels. The research, published recently in the prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, focused on the digestive properties of a species of shipworm, known as termites of the seas for their ability to destroy wooden ships and docks. Shipworms, which are actually a type of clam, have destroyed everything from Columbus’ ships to the wharves of San Francisco. It turns out that shipworms break down the wood with the help of bacteria that live in their gills, not their guts. More importantly, however, the research identified which bacteria produce enzymes to break down the cellulose, and it characterized the enzymes that degrade cellulose. That could lead to new industrial methods to turn cellulose into biofuel. Sharp conducted the research as a postdoc from 2008 to 2011 at the Ocean Genome Legacy at New England BioLabs. She noted it was a truly collaborative effort involving researchers from multiple institutions around the country. “Gene-mapping enabled researchers to identify the particular types of bacteria at work in the shipworms’ gills, which take up about one-third of their strange bodies,’’ according to an article in the Minneapolis Post. Documenting the bacteria used by the shipworm was a breakthrough for the study, which was funded partially by the U.S. Department of Energy. The discovery would make the process of turning cellulose into fuel a much more efficient and cost-effective method than is used today. Shipworms are animals whose closest relatives are the Ipswich Steamer clam. They are weird, tubular

in centimeters

creatures that look more like worms than clams and are found in submerged wood in seawater all over the world, including Tampa Bay. The shipworms used in the research were from Puget Sound. “First, the researchers used genomics to sequence the genomes of the gill bacteria and to identify the genes predicted to be involved in breaking down plant matter,” according to Science Daily. “Then, they searched the gut in hopes of finding proteins there that were encoded in genomes of the gill bacteria. From their examination, the researchers did, in fact, find these proteins.” “This was a very exciting project and the findings hold tremendous potential,” Sharp said. “The approaches used in this project, including metagenomics sequencing and analysis, are powerful new techniques that allow researchers to describe how organisms function. Just as we have learned much more about human health and ecology through the sequencing of the human genome, we now are able to describe how organisms function in the environment and interact with one another using environmental metagenomics.” “All of us at Eckerd are proud of the work Dr. Sharp did on this project and pleased that our students benefit,” said Dean of Students Suzan Harrison, Ph.D. “She has brought her expertise and the tools of metagenomics to her laboratory and teaching at Eckerd College. Now, the students are able to use these leading-edge technologies to research the ecology and evolution of organisms in threatened marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs.” PN

Other support for the research was provided by the National Science Foundation, the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health and New England BioLabs. The principal investigator was Dr. Dan Distel, director of the Ocean Genome Legacy Center, now based at Northeastern University. JANUARY 2015

January 2015 Astrology Article 2015 begins with a whirlwind of activity. There is so much that goes on with each sign during the whole year, it is hard to sum it up in a few sentences. However, there are some definite highlights that can be noticed. There are only two eclipses affecting the Cardinal signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn this year. Natives of these signs have had both easy and difficult transformations over the last several years; the last of which will occur in March. Fixed signs, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius are almost off of Saturn’s hook; and except for June – September will actually have it easier than in the past two years. The mutable signs of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces get two eclipses and a visit from taskmaster Saturn that reminds them to get serious about life on all levels. Read on for a monthly preview and check back every month for specifics!

On January 21st Mercury will make its first of three retrograde stations to slow us down. This will occur in Aquarius the sign of technology; so prepare accordingly. If you need tips on how to work with this time period I have a page on my website with the info to assist you. Big news for Sagittarians this year! Saturn, planet of karma and position, will begin its stay in your sign bringing rewards and asking for settlement of debts. An old cycle ends and a new one begins for you. No shortcuts, easygoing Sag; or you will have to answer for it later! Mercury moves direct on February 11th. March 20th we have our first Solar Eclipse of the year in Pisces. These sensitive natives will feel the strong vibrations of this phenomenon as all eclipses bring necessary changes to our lives in a rather abrupt fashion. Two weeks later on April 4th the Lunar eclipse will fall in Libra. These natives will continue to experience great change as their life paths are modified. Everyone on the planet will feel the eclipse energy wherever these signs fall in their birth chart. Our next Mercury retrograde occurs on May 18th in communication sign Gemini! Watch out for misunderstandings and mix-ups and be flexible with travel plans until June 11th when the energy moves forward again. Scorpios get their last visit from Saturn as it retrogrades back into their sign, beginning on June 14th. This last transit will finish issues that have been occurring over the last two years; as it brings endings and completions to your sign over the next three months. In July, Venus stations retrograde affecting love, money and beauty matters! You may find yourself going back

to a lover, forgotten style, or finding some hidden cash! But moving forward over the next few weeks into new territory in these matters is not advised! Postpone all plastic surgery or elective beauty treatments that alter your appearance unless it is fixing a current problem. Watch your finances and don’t try to meet someone new for now. It is best to fix problems in these areas when they arise; and they will. Leos say goodbye to Jupiter’s blessings on August 11th, as the giant planet moves on to visit Virgo for the next twelve months. It is Virgo’s turn for Jupiter to bring opportunity, expansion and abundance to natives of this earth sign; as they begin a new cycle of growth. Venus finally moves forward on the 6th of September. This is a busy month in the cosmos! On the 13th a solar eclipse occurs in Virgo, sign of health and duties. Then two weeks later the lunar eclipse in action sign Aries on the 27th brings awareness to areas needing to be changed during this first week of autumn! In between the eclipses, Mercury will make its final retrograde station on the 17th in Libra, sign of relating. It is a good idea to slow down and give attention to your partner; practice good listening habits and reconnect. Scorpios can celebrate with passion as Saturn finally leaves their sign on September 17th; however Sagittarians need to get ready again for karmas unfolding. On October 9th Mercury stations direct! We will go into the holiday season this year with no planetary setbacks or stressful energy in the cosmos! A nice way to leave the old year behind as we once again count down the days to a new one! CAPRICORN: Partnerships are in the spotlight. You begin to let go and clear out all that no longer serves your wellbeing. Energy is focused on conversations and daily trips. New financial plans are in order with beneficial support. Regenerate and renew YOU! AQUARIUS: Health, both physical and mental gets attention; make the needed changes now. Both children and friends need support. Expenses are likely. New beginnings for you come by month’s end. Review your life and make plans to break free of obstacles. PISCES: Romance takes the spotlight; differences in values and social interests may cause conflict. You are energized and in control by mid-month. Career brings new position but with more responsibility. A personal private retreat will do you good. ARIES: Home and family situations have your full attention as the month begins. Do take some down

time for you as well, to recharge and gain peace of mind. Your social calendar is full and a new focus on friends and future plans take you to the end of month. TAURUS: Conversations bring matters to light. You connect to siblings and put energy into friendships. A new focus on who you are in the big picture of life helps you set goals for the year. You start to let go of old worn-out thoughts, patterns and habits. GEMINI: Income and spending concerns take the spotlight early on as you focus on resources and finances. Take charge in career and be helpful to your partners as they need your support. New energy highlights education options; travel and legal matters go well. CANCER: You take the spotlight moonchild! Relationships benefit from makeovers. Work may bring added responsibilities. Health issues will surface and demand attention. New beginnings in finances as you look at needed changes in your old patterns, behavior. LEO: Spotlight on issues behind the scenes. Health transformations and breakthroughs in legal matters are likely. Fun becomes serious on all levels this year; creatively and romantically. New beginnings in partnerships with ease in relating and communicating. VIRGO: Full moon focus is on friends and social activities as the year unfolds. Energy will shift to partner soon; have patience. New beginnings in the workplace; wellness goals are planned. Keep letting go of anything or anyone that should be left behind. LIBRA: A spotlight on status and career begin your year. Stimulation to family and home concerns bring a release of tension. Communicate clearly. Energy is focused on wellness, habits and duties. New beginnings in romance and creative pursuits are likely. SCORPIO: Education, beliefs and philosophy of life are highlighted as you learn about habits and transforming them. Income goes to obligations and necessities instead of fun. Family matters and home life go well with new plans to be made. Take some play time. SAGITTARIUS: Saturn brings a reality check; responsibilities and productivity for the next two years. Finances are highlighted as your year begins as you juggle expenses. New energy lights up your travel house with pleasant trips and communication with all.

from meeting is Eric Lawton, an active Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce member. His store, Max Muscle, a locally-owned, familyoperated nutrition center, opened just south of Tyrone Mall in June 2013. They are offering exclusive supplement lines for health, sports nutrition and weight loss. A visit to Max Muscle involves an introduction to the ‘In-Body 230 Body Composition Assessment machine’. This high tech device measures and analyzes body fat, lean muscle and hydration. NESTA-Certified Fitness nutrition coaches on staff educate and guide the proper use of the Pharmaceutical Grade supplements they sell. Eric promises clients they can lose weight and never be hungry with his Nutrition Coaching and Planning for Results. Custom meal planning helps clients ‘stick to a healthy food plan’ from morning to night six or seven days a week to achieve desired results. There is even a shopping list provided to get whatever is needed. Benefits include fat loss, improved energy, better sleep, lean muscle support, and better performance. The scientific methods used are safe and effective for all age groups. “The secrets are portion control and proper food combinations,” he says. “We can prove our systems work in a matter of weeks. To have permanent results, however, often requires at least subtle lifestyle changes.” To learn if this program is for you and how to get started, call Eric Lawton, NESTA-Certified Fitness Nutrition Coach, Max Muscle St. Pete, 727-343-3648, stop by the store at 6848 22nd Ave N. in St. Petersburg or visit online at www.maxmusclestpete.com or on Facebook at maxmusclestpete.

If you are looking for help with your physical workout, Dave Smith might be your guy. Dave is a fitness coach specializing in corrective exercise and performance enhancement. He operates SmithBuilt Fitness in St. Petersburg, where he offers private coaching, personal training, corrective therapy and group fitness programs to individuals of all levels. He brings his services directly to his clients, either in their home gyms or at his private, state-of-the-art studio. “Odds are likely that you’ve tried and failed to reach your fitness goals, whether they were to lose belly fat, get toned, build strength or even train for a sporting event,” he says. “But, this year, things can be different. It’s all in your approach. Regardless of age, fitness is for everyone; success depends on setting expectations appropriately, picking the right type of exercise, working with someone qualified and correcting old injuries or mucular imbalances. Overcoming the latter is, as I see it, the biggest obstacle to getting and staying fit. “Everyone has muscular imbalances. Simply put, this is when one part of your body is much stronger than an opposing part. When opposing muscles place different amounts of tension on a joint, you feel pain. That knee pain you have? It’s not due to your knee, rather the muscular imbalance in your leg. This happens when your hip flexors and hamstrings become tight but their opposing muscles (your butt and quadriceps) are weak or less active. That chronic back pain you have? It’s due to a weak core. And what about that sciatica pain? A tight outer thigh might be to blame. Before signing up for Boot Camp, enrolling in Cross Fit or lacing up a pair of sneakers, seek out the right program for your age and fitness level. SmithBuilt Fitness customizes training programs for the individual. When it comes to fitness, just like weight loss, one size does not fit all.” Visit smithbuiltfitness.com for more info, call Dave at (315) 383-7040 or email smithbuiltfitness@gmail.com. PN

F INAL Word by Julian Fant

An Earlier Invasion

The recent spectacular Paradise NEWS Cover Story (Oct. 2014) concerning the alarming invasion of Florida waters by the beautiful, but ravenous, Lionfish, prompts memories of another invader. Some time following the early settlement of our beautiful peninsular paradise, a foreign visitor appeared in Florida waters. Unlike the Lionfish, it originated in fresh water, and was uniform in color. Introduced quite innocently into the state, however, it soon became a menace, and grew into a major problem in our lakes, ponds and streams. It prolifitated so rapidly and so extensively that it has cost the state untold millions of dollars in largely futile attempts to control or eliminate it. Many ingenious ideas have been attempted .....sprays....weighted nets....conversion into

cattle feed.... log booms.....none of which provided control. Florida history records that the invader was brought into the state by a female visitor to South America who thought the tiny green inhabitant of area streams and ponds was unique. She correctly assumed that they would enhance her residence and it’s adjoining lily pond, but incorrectly assumed that the aquatic plant, with it’s shiny green leaves, would never grow into the huge and expensive problem which still exists in many of our waterways. The culprit? The invading South American visitor? The insipid choker of hundreds of formerly open waterways? It was (and is) the Water Hyacinth, and, many years later, It is still very much with us!

TOMORROW’S FLOORS

at Woody’s TODAY!

Woody’s Kitchens & More, at 4737 34 St. (US19) S., has long been known to have the latest and greatest renovation products. Owner John Gerelus has been in the renovation industry a long time, and recognizes new trends early on. Having experienced problems with each of four different kinds of floors in the recent past, I found John’s enthusiasm over his new line of flooring products quite fascinating. “Carpets are cheap flooring solutions, but dirt, especially sand, pet hair and dander is hard to vacuum up,” says John. “Many people are allergic. Pets can be a problem with virtually any floor, even the perceived top quality products, like ceramic tile. Keeping grout clean is a constant struggle. Moisture, from leaks, pet bowls or accidents, drips, condensation, even from a leaky trash container or grocery sack can ruin any wood floor, especially laminates..” If you haven’t looked at vinyl floors lately, you may have an image of self-adhesive tiles or rolls of linoleum, but the industry has progressed dramatically since those days. The state of the art, regardless of the finish you are looking to achieve, is available in Luxury Vinyl Tile. LVT is beginning to be seen in finer homes. Choosing from the seemingly endless selection available might be your biggest challenge. Exceptional Realism & Durability Luxury vinyl tile floors are designed to capture the timeless look of natural stone, tile flooring, wood planks and ceramic tile floors, while providing an extremely durable and comfortable surface for everyday living. Luxury vinyl tile flooring comes in many extremely fashionable designs ranging from contemporary to rustic. Many styles feature deep embossing for stunning realism. Many of the luxury vinyl tile designs can be installed with grout or without grout or glue, unlike any other floor. Woody’s Kitchens & More is the area’s only Gold Level Dealer of Karndean Luxury Vinyl Tile products and offers floors either installed, often done on a single day, or cash and carry for the do-ityour-selfer. Quality is way better than cheaper products carried by the big box stores, offering a far superior appearance and longevity. Woody’s has flooring displays and catalogs, so you can choose from a huge variety of options. Call John at 727-864-4819, or just stop in to look at the displays and take a catalog home with you. DAYSTAR LIFE CENTER NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

W hat do these folks have in common? A grandmother raising three grandchildren who needs a grocery boost to make it to the end of the week. A single dad who lost his job and temporarily moves in with his mom. A teenager lands employment with the Tampa Bay Rays and needs help applying for a personal ID card. These are all people recently finding help at Daystar Life Center, the non-profit - where 96 cents of each $1 donated goes directly to client services. Daystar offers several ways to get over rough times. Daystar is there to meet basic needs for families and individuals during a crisis, and to guide clients toward a better life. Next volunteer information session - January 13, 1:30 p.m. Daystar is conveniently located at 226 6th St. S in downtown St. Petersburg.

Can’t make this session? Call Kitty Rawson, Community Relations Manager, at 727-498-8794 or email kitty.rawson@daystarlife.com to set up another time. Future volunteer information sessions will take place on third Tuesday of each month at the agency. Services include: food pantry, clothes closet, local transportation, utility assistance, rent/mortgage assistance, Travelers Aid, personal ID, hygiene needs, online benefits assistance, confidential and secure mail service, USDA food distribution and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). Daystar also provides information/referrals for other services plus offers haircuts during certain times.

“Start with good people, lay out the rules, communicate with your employees, motivate them and reward them. If you do all those things effectively, you can’t miss.” Lee Iacocca
