Started in 2003, The Celma Mastry Ovarian Cancer Foundation, (CMOCF) commemorates 20 years and announces its annual One Step Closer to the Cure 5K or 1K race on 9/9, starting at 7:30am and ending at 10 am from Albert Whitted Park. Individuals and teams may walk, run, or jog with fellow supporters along downtown St. Pete’s waterfront and help provide hope to local women suffering from ovarian cancer.

The Foundation has given nearly a million dollars to women who need childcare, lost wages, housekeeping, transportation to doctor visits, groceries, rent or funds to keep the electricity and water running while they undergo treatment, as well as support for research, prevention, and education in this community. “One Step assures survivors a community cares for them,” said Claudette Carlan, chairman of the foundation, created in her mother’s name to help other women who were also suffering with this disease. Register for the One Step Closer to the Cure 5K run, the 1-mile run or the sleep-in option at cmocf.org/onestep and receive a unique referral code to pass along to friends and family.

On 9/16 at Hilton St. Petersburg Carillon Park, help celebrate and raise funds at the NAACP St. Petersburg Freedom Fund Gala. This banquet is an opportunity to honor those who have fought for civil rights and equality, and to continue the fight for a better future. Join community members, activists, and leaders to celebrate our progress and inspire change and hear keynote speaker attorney Benjamin L. Crump, a highly recognized civil rights and trial lawyer speak about advocating for the voiceless of society. From personal injury, labor and employment matters, class actions, and other lawsuits, he is dedicated to holding the powerful accountable for their actions.

On 10/7, the 2023 Walk to End Alzheimer’s Pinellas County is part of the annual national walkathon in more than 600 communities nationwide and is the world’s largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease. Located at Poynter Park in St. Pete, the event begins at 8am and the ceremony/ walk kicks off at 9am.
