Summer storms are a fact of life in the tropics. We have been incredibly lucky in the past, and there are a lot of newcomers amongst our readership that have not even had to evacuate yet. So, it is good to remind residents that the “season” is starting. Sea level rise is happening too, more quickly affecting the Miami area than here, so we get to learn from their successes. A new subscriber recently asked if their issue could come sooner, because when it lands in the mailbox, half the month is over. We said yes, you can see it online, most months from the first of the month at www.paradisenewsfl.com, but I also said that if you keep and continue to refer to each issue until the new one arrives in the mail, you will miss little. You see, the magazine is designed so that if you find it online on the first, you will see what is going on this week, but if you get it in the mail, what you miss was in last month’s edition, so you should not have missed it at all, unless you threw last month’s away before this month’s arrived. The Best Beaches in the U.S. have two awesome groups, the Tampa Bay Beaches and the Treasure Island / Madeira Beach Chambers of Commerce. We have been active members of both for years. PINELLAS COUNTY Future seawalls to be higher, stronger and better Despite more natural innovations like “living” shorelines, seawalls aren’t going anywhere in Florida except up. With thousands of miles of coastline facing two feet of sea level rise by 2060, some cities and counties are already calling for raising the standard heights of seawalls. And many of the seawalls to come in the decades ahead promise to be different, not only stronger and more durable, but better designed to both absorb waves and reduce damage to the adjacent sea or bay bottom. Others are designed to encourage sea life to inhabit honeycomb portions of the design. A major advance will be a move from steel to fiberglass rebar, which is expected to vastly extend seawall life in the future.

Eckerd Hall and Vinik’s Imagine LLC, among others, are vying to manage the new amphitheater that will be built in downtown Clearwater. The amphitheater is part of the city’s $84 million Imagine Clearwater development, which aims to transform Coachman Park on Drew Street into an urban waterfront park development for recreation and entertainment uses that would help attract residents and tourists to an underutilized part of downtown.

Ascent St. Pete will celebrate its topping off on April 29. Rising higher than any other rental community in the Tampa Bay region, Ascent St. Pete provides residents incredible, 360-degree views of Tampa Bay as well as the Gulf of Mexico. The project will feature outdoor pool amenities at both the sixth and 36th floors. Ascent St. Pete is scheduled to open in January 2023 with final construction completion slated for May 2023. Tesla has proposed to transform the Kane’s Furniture

The 100,000+ square-foot facility will be converted into an automotive store where customers can learn about different Tesla models, test drive, purchase, lease and have their vehicles serviced. St. Petersburg-based Apogee Real Estate Partners, led by John Stadler and John Barkett, plans to build a $49 million 23-floor mixed-use tower at 155 17th St. S. adjacent the Pinellas Trail. The tower will have a café space, 204 apartments, a 300-space parking garage and a roofed “urban porch” along the trail, to include 4,600 square feet of retail space. The Pinellas County Commission, together with dozens of business and community partners, broke ground in mid-February for a new, 45,000 square foot state-of-the-art business incubator. The facility, slated for completion in 2023, will drive economic impact by catalyzing future startups and technology companies in the Tampa Bay region. Distracted Driving Awareness Month By Lauri Sullivan You wouldn’t drive with your eyes closed, would you? When you type a text, or even read a text, you’re taking your eyes off the road for several seconds. It doesn’t feel like a long time, but you may be surprised to know that in just five seconds, a car driving at 55 mph can travel the length of an entire football field. A lot can happen in the time it takes for you to write a text. A child can run into the road or the car in front of you might slam on their brakes. With your eyes on your phone, you might swerve into the bike lane. Driving a car demands your full attention and taking your eyes off the road can be fatal. The statistics about distracted driving are alarming. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that 424,000 people were injured in 2019 in crashes involving a distracted driver. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,142 people died due to distracted driving in 2020. That’s almost nine people every day dying because someone had to check their phone, put on lipstick, or adjust their radio. Approximately one in five of those fatalities were pedestrians or people outside a vehicle – joggers, bike riders, or people pulled over to the side of the road. Students also learn to be a good passenger. Passengers can be the designated texter and navigator, leaving the driver free to focus on driving. Teens can be pretty confident about their ability to multi-task. With so many attractions pulling them in different directions all the time, they may think that driving can just be added to the mix. Drivers can be stopped and ticketed for texting while driving. That includes typing, sending, or reading a message. You are allowed to text when parked, or when stopped at a red light. You can also use a phone in hands-free mode, for navigation, for receiving safety or traffic alerts, and some other exceptions. It’s still much safer to focus on driving than to look at your phone for any reason.What about law enforcement officers, many people ask? They sometimes have to operate a motor vehicle while using their in-car laptop, cell phone, or radio. Law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical professionals are exempt and they also receive special training to drive in higher risk situations.

Reiki Maybe you’ve heard of Reiki but don’t quite know what it is or whether it’s right for you.

As a young adult I was first introduced to Reiki when I took my mom, who had MS, to a friend who did traditional massage and Reiki. Constant tremors caused Mom’s left arm and shoulder to shake. During her Reiki treatment, her shaking stopped.

Eastern healing traditions, like Reiki, focus on energy in many different modalities. Acupuncture unblocks your energy meridians. Tai Chi or Qigong helps realign energy and keep it flowing. Yin and Yang are also energy concepts, in a constant state of balancing and affected by emotion, stress, diet and health.

I started researching Reiki and in 1999, became a Reiki instructor and helped many people with various health issues. The Florida Orchestra has named rising star Chelsea Gallo as its new assistant conductor starting with the 2022-23 season in the fall. Before 45, it’s more common in men, and after 45, it’s more common in women.

LOCAL TOWNS HOST HURRICANE PREP EVENTS MADEIRA BEACH The city of Madeira Beach held its Hurricane Preparedness Expo Saturday, April 9, from 10am to noon. Visitors met with city representatives, local organizations, and businesses who provided information to help all prepare before, during, and after a storm. The event was open to all members of the coastal communities. Recreation Director Jay Hatch told Paradise News, “Our event was well-attended with about 100 in and out, and 50 who stayed for speaker presentations. Guest speakers included Madeira Beach City Manager Robin Gomez, Madeira Beach Flood Plain Manager, Madeira Beach Fire Chief Clint Belk, Representative from Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, and Pinellas County Emergency Management, and Mike Boylan from Mike’s Weather Page. Vendors included Madeira Beach Public Works with sandbags available for pickup, City Marina and Fire Station, City Staff for Access Passes & Parking Passes, Pinellas County Emergency Management, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Coast Guard Auxiliary and Mike’s Weather Page with information and giveaways.

ST. PETE BEACH The free 2022 St. Pete Beach Hurricane Preparedness Expo is Saturday, May 21, in Horan Park, with free parking at 7701 Boca Ciega Drive, from 10am to 1pm. City PIO Sara Lacuente told Paradise News,“This community event is aimed towards helping educate the local community about the importance of preparation and planning. All residents are encouraged to bring their families out to this great event to see what it takes to be prepared for this hurricane season. Every year, new products and services are introduced that may make you and your family even safer this storm season.” Find out what the city of St. Pete Beach and other agencies are doing to prepare this year. Already set are participating organizations including St. Pete Beach Fire Rescue, St Pete Beach Recreation/Aquatics, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Pinellas County Emergency Management, Pinellas County Animal Services, AAA, West Shore Construction, and Pebblestone Construction. Attendees can sign up for free services that are available from government and non-profit agencies. Business preparation tips: Take the necessary precautions. As a storm threatens, secure your building. Cover and move equipment and furniture to a secured area, always protect your data with backup files, make plans to work with limited cash and probably no water, sewer, or power for at least two weeks. Contact your customers and suppliers regarding your continuity plans. Protect windows and glass doors. Clear the property or tie down any items that could become flying missiles. Fill fleet cars and equipment gas tanks. Turn off electricity, water and gas. If your business is in a non-evacuation area, think about having your business serve as a host home shelter for employees. Employees need TLC: Communicate your business hurricane plan with your employees. Remember, too, that your associates may need some extra consideration. Probably all your employees need time to prepare their own homes and talk with their families about their own personal emergency plans. Business interruption insurance: Business owners need to think about what they would do if their buildings were unusable after a storm. Understand that business interruption insurance will compensate you for lost income if your company has to leave the site because of disaster-related damage; be sure that the policy will cover your company for more than a few days. After a disaster, it may take more time to get back up and running – ask what the waiting period would be before the insurance coverage begins. Explore the cost of adding this coverage to your specific business type. Some businesses, like restaurants, might have to pay a higher premium based on risk. Special note for home-based businesses: All businesses, large and small, are thinking about emergency preparedness. And, home-based business owners should be doing that too. “Home-based business owners should be aware that after a 24

disaster, they may qualify for SBA Disaster Loans and possibly unemployment benefits, if they are unable to work,” said Corey McCaster, senior manager, Small Business & Diversity Suppliers in Pinellas County Economic Development (PCED). A To-Go Box is another critical item every home-based business owner should pull together. One action to take right now is to back up computer information on CDs or another portable medium. Store those backups in the To-Go Box too. Take photos of your home office, both inside and out, to take along. “Just like all business leaders, home-based business owners should ensure they safeguard essential business documents and information in a Go Box,” said McCaster. “Ideally, that box should be backed up in an alternative location in the event the home is destroyed.”

RE-ENTERING THE COUNTY Sheriff Gualtieri emphasizes,“If you live in a barrier island community, make sure you are registered for and know where you’ve placed your Emergency Access Permit. When a mandatory evacuation order is lifted, law enforcement officials will scan these permits at designated re-entry points. Barrier island residents may register directly with their city government during its general office hours year-round, so don’t wait until an evacuation order has been issued to secure yours. “If you registered for and still possess your Emergency Access Permit from years prior, you DO NOT need to register again. If you don’t know if you need a permit, visit www.pcsoweb.com/ emergency-access-permit or call the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 727-582-6200.” The County Emergency Management website notes that if you have evacuated out of the area, returning home can have some challenges if a storm has done significant damage to the county. Bridges and roads may be closed due to damage, flooding, or debris. Officials may have entire areas closed off to everyone, even residents. It’s important to remember that coming home is not a guarantee. So before heading home, be sure to watch or read the news to learn the latest information about road conditions and damage reports for Pinellas County and surrounding areas.

Applebutter Express’s song “Hey My Brotha,” was featured in the Ron Howard film “The Good Lie” starring Reese Witherspoon (2015). The band’s story begins in 2004, when Kyle Biss met his future wife Shannon while working at a record store in Bradenton. Still a focused bass player, Kyle picked up a ukulele in 2010 and began to write songs, with the idea of singing with Shannon (his then girlfriend) for fun on the couch. Pretty soon the duo began making a name for themselves among the open mic community; in no time, the eclectic, tuneful duo – now known as The Applebutter Express – were the talk of Tampa. Kyle and Shannon married in 2011. Zach Rogers (bass) joined in 2015 and newest member Jason Baker (fiddle) started in 2020. Since then, The Applebutter Express has performed at such prestigious festivals as Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, Hulaween, Suwannee Springfest, and many others.

The Tampa Bay Rays’ mission is to energize the community through the magic of Rays baseball. After coping with a shortened season and social distancing restrictions due to the pandemic the past two years, the Rays are bringing back the fun. Located just a few blocks from downtown St. Petersburg and a short drive from Tampa is Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays. Tropicana Field’s 1.1 million square feet include unique design features and fan amenities found nowhere else in the Major Leagues. It’s the last dome stadium in baseball and a place where both fans and players

can escape the summertime humidity and constant threat of rain. One of the most unique features at Tropicana Field is the Rays Touch Tank, a 35-foot, 10,000-gallon tank, where fans can touch live rays. It is located just beyond the fence in right-center field. Upon entering the seating area, fans view a sea of blue seats. The Tampa Bay Rays are motivated to fill those seats. A Lifeline For Cash Strapped Small Businesses by Peter Roos

Most businesses suffered substantial economic losses during the pandemic. Government at all levels pitched in to help. The most help came from the Small Business Administration (SBA) in the form of loans, which were distributed through banks. Many business owners are still desperate for cash to cover rising costs for everything. While the SBA ‘PPP’ money is gone, help is available through a less known program called Employee Retention Tax Credits (“ERTC”). The ERTC is a part of the Cares Act legislation that made credits available to eligible businesses whose business took a hit, based on wages paid to their employees. Jake Welsh, owner of Payroll Vault St. Petersburg helps small companies with their payroll and has been finding many businesses that qualify don’t even know about the opportunity to get credits based on their payroll. They have to be applied for and will expire in 2023 (for 2020 credits) and 2024 (for 2021 credits), so procrastinators will lose out.

For 2021, the maximum credit is 70% of wages up to $10,000 for a maximum credit of $7,000/employee/quarter for the first three quarters of 2021 – so a total maximum credit of $21,000/employee in 2021. . Recovery Startup Business Eligibility Businesses which started after 2/15/2020 with annual revenues less than $1,000,000 qualify for credits even if they are ineligible under the government ordered shutdown or revenue reduction eligibility requirements. The maximum credit is 70% of wages up to $10,000 for a maximum credit of $7,000 per employee/quarter, capped at $50,000/ quarter for a Recovery Startup Business. Q3 and Q4 2021 are eligible. Producing Art News for Paradise NEWS has led me to some interesting places. And my love of coffee has led me to others. 2D Café combined both into one fantastic journey. My friend Mary and I needed to do some planning for an organization we belong to. Why not venture into that new cafe on Central Ave. in St. Pete? You cannot honestly say that the 2D Café stands out amid the other shops on the 2100 block of Central Ave. The sign is flat, just white letters outlined in black, nestled between the you-can’t-miss-’em signs for Wendy’s Closet and Speakeasy Kava. What draws you in are the doodles on the facade, the unmistakable cartooning of local muralist Chad Mize. Mary and I were enticed by the aromas of hot java and steaming baked goods wafting into the afternoon sunlight. Once inside it was hard to tell if the black and white decor was real or more of Mize’s imaginings. After ordering our cappuccinos (courtesy of Dancing Goats) and empanadas (made in-house by owner Maria Merello) we found an actual table and chairs, all white with black outlines, on which stood a black wire “vase.” Beyond my companion I saw a comfy fireplace alcove. Could one sit in the chairs and place drinks on the tables? Hard to tell until the optical illusion was broken when a couple did just that. The cafe’s motto is “be the art.” According to Merello, the drawings are meant to give visitors the feeling they are inside their own comic book. An hour of strong coffee and tasty empanadas later, plans were set in motion by we two comic book heroes.

Try to make vinegar your top choice for cleaning everything. It has the same cleaning strength as commercial cleaners, but none of the harsh chemicals that you are trying to avoid. With a pH of 2.0 and the acetic acid content, vinegar is an unfriendly environment for microorganisms, so it is a great cleaner for your home. Just think about how well it does at inhibiting bacteria and mold from growing in pickles. Studies have tested how effectively it kills bacteria and viruses. A 2010 study showed that a 10 percent malt vinegar solution was effective in killing the Human Influenza A/H1N1 virus. Other studies have found that vinegar is an effective mycobactericidal disinfectant.

Meet Jeannine from Mystical Silk! At home in Wisconsin, Jeannine was trapped in the corporate world. She hung in as the recession left many without jobs. A lover of song and dance, Jeannine always had an urge to create and share happiness. For Christmas 2009 her sister gave her a girl’s day out, including a silk scarf painting class! Jeannine fell in love with the mixing of colors, the brightness, and how happy it made her feel. A new adventure was born! She knew this was her medium to share brightness and happiness with as many people as she could. Her creations include silk scarves and wraps, eyeglass holders, bamboo headbands and caps, even printed cards and bookmarks. All pieces are lovingly painted freehand with a brush, and she uses a “Gutta Resist” for her drawing. Each piece takes about 3-5 days start to finish depending on the intricacy of the drawing. She has built wonderful relationships with so many market customers and is now also creating custom orders. Jeannine joined Tampa Bay Markets in 2017. Celebrated worldwide, the Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival (RPPF) launches its 10th Season The University of South Florida (USF) School of Music will host RPPF June 28 - July 18, 2022. Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival is supported entirely by private donations to Rebecca Penneys Friends of Piano, a non-profit 501c3 organization. The students are joined by 23 world-class faculty who work closely with them during the three-week festival. RPPF provides each participant with a semester’s worth of private lessons, nightly masterclasses, special topic classes, faculty presentations, performance opportunities, and abundant practice time on Steinway pianos. “Our goal is to offer each student – and the world of piano – a unique view of many different philosophies in teaching and performing styles,” said Penneys. In this 10th anniversary season, the tuition-free festival will bring together 39 of the world’s aspiring collegiate classical pianists from 17 countries who were selected from a very large applicant pool. This summer’s landmark season has as its theme, Legacy of Piano and Planet. Award-winning American composer Kenneth Frazelle will unveil a 5–7-minute work for solo piano composed and dedicated to RPPF “celebrating the legacy, enthusiasm, and imagination of its 10th anniversary season.” To further commemorate the 10th year, Rebecca Penneys Friends of Piano Inc. donated $1,000 to two non-profit organizations to further the health and legacy of our world: $1000 to One Tree Planted Inc. to plant 1,000 trees in North America to help with global reforestation efforts; $1,000 to United National Women’s League of America, Inc. to give humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine. As part of her continuing personal mission to boost education and art in the Tampa Bay area, Rebecca, who is founder and director of RPPF as well as Professor Emerita of Piano at Eastman School of Music, created the Rebecca Penneys Graduate Collective at USF which guarantees five tuition-free graduate awards to five lucky students for their two-year Master of Music degree program. By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones Many people will do anything to avoid dealing with, not only the pain, but the linear process of learning the lesson. We embody the lesson buried in the pain by remaining mindfully connected to the moment at hand and staying with the experience rather than running from it.

How Often Do You Repeat the Same Mistake? A learning experience is one of those things that says, “You know that thing you just did? Don’t do that.” ~ Douglas Adams Upon moving to Florida, I discovered we have an abundance of venomous snakes. This motivated me to take my dog MacDoodle, to a Snake Avoidance Class, where they used live venomous snakes to give the dogs a “learning experience” they, hopefully, did not soon forget. With the snakes safely and humanely muzzled, the handler placed an electric shock collar on Mac and then led him to the first snake. Mac moved as near as he could for an up-close and personal experience of what “snake” is. When he was within striking distance of the snake, the handler delivered a mild “buzzzz” electrical impulse to Mac’s collar. He immediately received a lesson etched directly in his puppy mind, which was that “Snake” equates to a certain degree of unpleasantness. It took two more “learning

experiences” with different snakes and he was a believer; the third time the trainer tried to bring him near a snake, Mac wanted nothing to do with it. This only happened because the trainer kept Mac present and engaged with the experience until he learned the lesson. How about you? Are you ever challenged to stay engaged with your “life-learning lessons?” Have you noticed there is a correlation between how many times you make the same mistake and the unpleasantness or pain you experience? The more pain involved, the fewer times you make the same mistake – or, at least in theory, that is how it is supposed to work. The problem with this theory is that, while it may work well for dogs wearing shock collars, humans seem more difficult to train. This theory doesn’t consider the pull of denial and instant gratification to which humans are so susceptible. Often we avoid, deny, or numb the pain rather than allowing it to be our teacher.

When we cannot lean into the moment and embrace the lesson that is being offered, we are signaling the universe saying, “Hey... I want more of the same.” As an example, many of us have gone from one disastrous relationship or unsatisfactory job to the next, and then the next, ad infinitum, never stopping long enough to explore the possibility that each failed experience has something to teach us. While the next person’s name and hair color may change, the “issues” don’t; while the next job may appear to have different coworkers, amazingly enough, the same “problem” people show up in different bodies. We can’t outrun our self-limiting behaviors and beliefs because they will follow us like our own shadow; however, we can transcend them by exposing them to the light of awareness. The practice is to pay attention to what is going on in the moment and learn what it has to teach you. While the unpleasant impulse of a shock collar stimulated Mac’s motivation to change his behavior, the learned response from the shock (in that moment) probably saved him from much worse pain and suffering in the future; that is called delayed gratification. What lesson is life trying to teach you today about repeatedly recreating the same unpleasant experiences? Odd as it seems, that is the purpose of pain – to get your attention. Hey, if a dog can learn the meaning of “You know that thing you just did? Don’t do that,” there is hope for you and me. The lesson from my master teacher Mac is that life doesn’t need to be so “ruff” – we only need to be present and teachable in the moment... and what better time to start than right now? Consider yourself buzzzzed.
