Half-a-Century Celebration Fifty years ago, Sarah “Renee” LaFountain and Peter Allan Roos were wed in St. Petersburg. It rained 8” that day. Renee, a Tampa native, was a ballerina and the acrobatic star with the Florida Ballet Theatre. She went on to teach dance for 30 years, helping to shape young minds and bodies. Peter was a recent immigrant, a graduate of Canadian high schools, an SPJC student who was helping his dad open a campground on Lake Tarpon and US19. They met at the Clearwater campus of St. Petersburg Junior College in a “Government” class. How he knew at such a tender age that Renee was the soul mate he could have spent his life searching for is still a mystery. Renee was older so Peter lied, and the couple celebrated his 24th birthday four months before he had to admit he was only 19. By then it made no difference.

They lived, played and even worked together for most of the past 50 years too, with 40 years of it in publishing. When asked what contributes to the longevity of their relationship, they most often say, “We learned to say, ‘You are probably right.’” That little phrase diffuses arguments over the most trivial things before they can form hard feelings. “Mutual respect and admiration are also critical.” Many people from our parent’s generation saved for retirement so they could “start to enjoy life.” Many never made it. Renee and I decided to enjoy how we make a living, and to really enjoy a lengthy vacation together every year. Our anniversary is August 15th and Renee’s birthday comes five days later. We have come to vacation in Colorado that time of year. With enough elevation, we can always find a cool spot to break up the humid 90 degree summers here. We call them “honeymoons” instead of vacations. In June we started our 50th honeymoon. Years ago we met a fellow from whom we borrowed a classic Saab convertible each summer for a dozen or so years. For our 50th anniversary gift we bought one almost like it on Ebay. In June, we picked it up in Tucson and drove it 3,000 miles before parking it at its new home near Frisco, Colorado. We were all over Colorado with it. We even drove 100 miles to Del Norte for lunch and to see Corey Hubbard (Hubbard’s Marina…) at her new “General Store” there. Our trip did not start out so well. If not for an extremely good Samaritan with skills who found us broken down, we likely would not have made it to our paid-for hotel room 100 miles away in Winslow, AZ, that night. This young home builder from Payson, Arizona, had a rack with tools nearby and was feeling generous with his time toward a couple his parent’s age. We admitted we were trying to enjoy a few weeks in our newly acquired mountain explorer. We “took it easy” and we made it to La Posada Historic Hotel in Winslow, Arizona, and to every other destination we set for ourselves. The following day we drove through Petrified Forest National Park and slept that night in Mesa Verde National Park.

ST PETE BEACH_____________________ Parking Study & Survey The city of St. Pete Beach is conducting a study to reevaluate the current off-street parking requirements in the Land Development Code. The current parking requirements were incorporated into the code in 2005, and since then many changes have occurred in the parking and transportation environment. Furthermore, outdated off-street parking requirements promote quantity over quality, focusing on ensuring an ample supply of parking. Corey Landing The development team behind the proposed $90 million mixed-use project in St. Pete Beach publicly unveiled conceptual renderings and plans for the first time. South Florida-based real estate firm Ram Realty Advisors presented glossy renderings of the planned waterfront development dubbed Corey Landing during a public meeting at St. Pete Beach Community Center. The images revealed a modern building that would have 243 Class-A residential units along with more than 10,000 square feet of retail space to the east end of Corey Avenue.

The project is still in its early stages, but construction could begin by the end of 2021 with move-ins in the fall of 2023.

COVER STORY It’s NO ILLUSION: The ZUBRICK MAGIC THEATRE in ST. PETE is OPEN NOW By Nanette Wiser
VOTED “BEST Family Magic SHOW!” Experience the wonder at St. Pete’s only magic theatre. Get your tickets now before they all ... DISAPPEAR!
Be prepared to be amazed when award-winning illusionists Chris and Ryan Zubrick perform at the Zubrick Magic Theatre this summer in the EDGE District in downtown St. Petersburg. Opening night was a huge success on July 29th and their ribbon cutting with the St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay Chambers of Commerce will be August 25th. This spectacular venue in shades of black, gold and purple (the colors of intrigue and wonder), studded with twinkle light and sophisticated glitter is giving audiences young and old a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds and sensations they’ve never experienced before. The Zubricks conjure up an exhilarating blend of sleight-of-hand, family-friendly comedy and breathtaking grand-scale illusions in a whimsical and elegant performance that captures the hearts and imaginations of multi-generational audiences. Originally from Michigan, Chris and Ryan were magic-obsessed youngsters who knew they loved magic from a young age. They met by accident in 2005 when they were both booked for the same event. The rest is kismet, from their astounding success overseas to their marriage and

happy days raising their son Oliver (now 4) and building the theatre with the help of their friends and family. Chris and Ryan returned from a 13-year run performing overseas on the islands of Saipan and Guam. After performing over 7,500 shows for more than 2 million people, they decided to bring their astonishing brand of magic and grand illusion back to the United States. They toured 26 states and chose St. Petersburg because they wanted to raise their son Oliver in a family-friendly community that supports diversity and LGBTQ parents. “St. Petersburg ticked off all our boxes,” explains Chris.“A warm climate with palm trees and beaches (no Michigan winters), a great place to raise our son, a worldclass arts and entertainment industry, a popular tourist destination and a great place to live and work. We believe that our theatre will draw people from all over the country (and the world) and is a refreshing addition to the local scene.” An intimate and unforgettable evening of magical entertainment fits the bill for date night, an opportunity to escape reality with a group of friends or the chance to seek a mind-boggling activity the whole family can enjoy together. “Chris and Ryan Zubrick cut a stunning picture with their unique and fresh look. Articulate and personable, they entertain and charm audiences with their winning personalities and impressive magic,” says David Copperfield’s co-director and choreographer Joannie Spina. Their St. Petersburg show is more personal. When they performed abroad, their audience spoke multiple languages,
so their commentary was minimal. In the new theatre, they weave together stories about growing up, their family, their heroes like Lance Burton and they perform illusions inspired by their history and love of magic. Be prepared for an ethereal firefly illusion reminiscent of summers in Michigan. Even Oliver gets into the groove, telling Daddy and Papa Zubrick that he will perform there one day and pointing out things at the store they need for the theatre. “Magic creates a childlike wonder in all of us,” says Chris. “After this year’s pandemic, we all need some magic in our lives. It’s the perfect time to open our theatre.” It’s no wonder the duo has been showered with awards such as “The Merlin Award” in 2018 for Best Family Magic Show, the industry’s highest honor. Previous recipients included Penn & Teller, Criss Angel and Siegfried & Roy. Other kudos include Magician of the Year, Best Stage Act, Best Costume and Trophy of Excellence from prestigious entertainment and industry groups. “We are passionate about creating a fantastic, one-of-a-kind experience for our audience,” said Chris Zubrick. “Our goal is to amaze and entertain people of all ages and create wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.” Ryan Zubrick added, “We look forward to entertaining guests at our magical venue which creates a new thrilling and mesmerizing experience for the St. Petersburg community and its year-round tourists.” No doubt, Zubrick Magic Theatre will be the hottest ticket in St. Petersburg for years to come.

Adventures in Paradise By Nanette Wiser
SWAMP-SENSATIONS Paradise News’ art director and photographer Janet Nummi loves national parks, and so far, has 14 under her tutu. Here is her recap from her latest adventure to the swamp at Midway Campground in the Big Cypress National Preserve, the Everglades and Biscayne National Parks in her Airstream, comfy and tricked out with wi-fi, laptop, pets, camera, water, bug spray and sunscreen. “The stars at night were brilliant and alligators were everywhere. Big Cypress National Preserve is just a few hours from St. Pete, bordering the Everglades National Park. The Oasis Visitor Center’s long boardwalk is a great spot for big gator sightings. On the way back to camp, we drove down the 22-mile gravel road known as The Loop, and stopped by Florida’s legendary Clyde Butcher Gallery to see his powerful black and white landscapes of the area. He is definitely the Ansel Adams of the swamp! “Our next stop was Biscayne National Park where 95% of the park is underwater. It’s a great place to boat, kayak, snorkel or dive the shipwrecks. www.biscaynenationalparkinstitute.org “On the way home, our collective sweet tooth (hubby, kids and fur-babies) detoured to Key Largo for the best key lime pie at Blond Giraffe Key Lime Pie Factory, followed by a romp and swim on Key Largo’s dog beach. Treats for all continued with a stop at a fabulous fruit market with an exotic petting zoo. Florida City’s Robert Is Here sells exotic homegrown fruits and shakes that are out of this world, and owner Robert was hand slicing fruit for a guest onsite.” www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgIvxPH-g2Q

GeckoFest (Sept. 4, 10am-10pm): The annual end of summer celebration in Gulfport is the quirky Geckofest, celebrating its 20th birthday and honoring this waterfront village’s unofficial mascot and favorite reptile, the Gecko! The Facebook vote for this year’s theme? “American Band Stand” will inspire musical inspired costumes, music, dancing, food and drink from 1950 thru the 1980s. Look for Elvis, Elton, disco queens and punk costumes by festival attendees and vendors. Parking and admission to Geckofest is complimentary and the event is pet and family-friendly.

Turning 65? Get the knowledgeable help
you need to navigate the Medicare minefield
Birthdays. Whether you love ’em or hate ‘em, they beat the alternative. But when the 65th birthday rolls around, it brings more than the usual baggage. It’s the time for thinking about Medicare.
Instead of something to dread or ignore, consider your 65th birthday as a time of opportunity. Among insurance and Medicare specialists, this milestone birthday is known as the Initial Enrollment Period, which – in its entirety – extends three months before and three months after your birth month. It is during this period that you can enroll in Original Medicare, as well as Medicare Advantage Plans, Prescription Drug Plans, and Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans – whatever makes the most sense for you and your unique circumstances. With limited exceptions, during this seven-month period you have special rights that enable you to enroll in any plan that you choose, regardless of any health conditions. Such decisions can’t be made lightly, as they will impact the remainder of your life. And Medicare can be tricky and confusing. So it is recommended that you
start the process with the guidance of a licensed insurance agent who specializes in this area, like Robert D. Inghram. An independent, licensed insurance agent for the state of Florida, Robert Inghram’s specialty is Medicare and Medicaid products offered by private insurance companies. These products include Medicare Advantage Plans, Prescription Drug Plans and Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans. With clients throughout the state, Mr. Inghram specializes in ensuring his clients understand the nuances, as well as the confusing aspects, of Medicare so that they can make a confident, informed decision about coverages, benefits and pricing that will meet their needs. The way he sees it? His role is to help you navigate the Medicare minefield. As confusing and complicated as it may already be, that minefield is made even trickier with COVID-induced limitations and CDC recommendations for social distancing and mask wearing of the unvaccinated (or recently vaccinated). The good news is Robert can help you review plan options, answer questions,

and sign up for the plan of your choice remotely in the comfort of your home through his web portal or if you don’t have internet access, by phone. As your 65th birthday approaches, there’s no need to feel anxious about signing up for Medicare. Center for Health Equity at 2333 34th St. S is Foundation headquarters.
Healthy St. Pete has new GOALS for ongoing SUCCESS
Story by STEVE TRAIMAN Photos courtesy of Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg
The Foundation for a Healthy St Petersburg
has roots going back more than a century to 1906 when a 15-bed clinic was built to serve as St. Petersburg’s first centralized health care facility. Soon after, the five-room Good Samaritan Hospital was built and by 1910 the city had raised $10,000 in bond issues to build a 22-bed facility called Augusta Memorial. The former Good Samaritan Hospital became a separate facility to serve the city’s African-American community. In 1923, the hospital became known as Mound Park Hospital, eventually with 725 beds, making it one of the finest hospitals in the southeastern United States at the time. In 1968, the city exited the hospital business and leased the then-existing facilities to Bayfront Medical Center, Inc., a private, not-for-profit organization, renaming the hospital,“Bayfront Medical Center.” Development continued in the mid-1980s with a new emergency and trauma center, new intensive care, neurology and cardiac care units, and a new obstetrics program with perinatal and

Welcome message at headquarters entrance. nursery facilities. In the years to come, Bayfront earned a Level II emergency/trauma center designation and implemented the Bayflite Emergency Helicopter Transport System. Today, the Bayflite program services 13 counties and is the only Medical Flight program in the southeastern United States to carry blood. In early 2013, Bayfront Health Systems, Inc., entered into a strategic partnership with Health Management Associates (HMA). After changing its name to Bayfront Health Education and Research Organization, Inc., it sold substantially all of the assets of the hospital and its related health care facilities to a newly formed company named Bayfront HMA Healthcare Holdings, LLC. HMA owned 80% of that company (through affiliates) and Bayfront Health Education and Research Organization, Inc. (through a subsidiary) owns 20%. HMA assumed management of the hospital, which was then re-named “Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.” In early 2014, Community Health Systems, Inc., one of the nation’s leading operators of general acute care hospitals, acquired HMA and its affiliates and subsidiaries, and took over HMA’s management responsibilities and 80% interest in ownership. From the very beginning, the hospital has had
a rich history of service to the community, annually providing many millions of dollars in charity care. In March 2015, Bayfront Health Education and Research Organization, Inc., renamed itself as Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg, Inc. The Foundation was converted from a public charity to a private health foundation, with Randall H. Russell as president and CEO. It has more than $180 million to fund its mission and is the largest grantmaking foundation in St. Petersburg. Russell heads a professional staff that includes Shannon Kalahar, Communications Manager; Kyandra Darling, Communications & Engagement Specialist; Keesha Benson, PhD, Director of Learning; Marcus Brooks, Community Engagement; Harold Bryant, Facilities & Events Coordinator; Belinda Childs, Controller; Gaylynn Driver, Office Administrator; Roxanne Fixer, Chief Activation Officer; Nathan Gil, Systems & Data Administrator; Carl Lavender Jr., Chief Equity Officer; Carol Martin Brown, Chief Financial & Administrative Officer; Carmen Price Carrillo, Operations Coordinator; Julie Rocco, Director of Strategic Investments; and Kewa Wright, Senior Administrator. A dedicated Board of Trustees is headed by Dr. Katurah Jenkins-Hall, Chair; with Dorrie Peterson, ScD, MHS, Vice-chair; Emery Ivery, secretary; Sharon Gardner, treasurer; Marianne Edmonds, Rev. Kenneth Irby, Kelly Kirschner, and Lorna Taylor.
Mission & Key Services . . . “The Foundation’s focus and mission are to improve the health and well-being of our community,” President/CEO Russell told Paradise News.“ This has been accomplished through initiatives that create sustainable, long-term improvements to quality of life – thus expanding its more than a century-old legacy of serving the community. “Advancing race equity to improve health in Pinellas County is a community-wide endeavor. Many have been working at it for years, others are coming to the issue with fresh curiosity and much to learn. Wherever you are on the journey – from basic awareness to seasoned activist – the Foundation is a community resource to support you.
“The energy and opportunity of this moment are remarkable – let’s make it count! Although the circumstances of COVID-19 have disrupted our lives and required adjustments to our work, the basic five categories of Foundation investment below remain consistent.” Equity Movement Building through empowering a healthier, more equitable community through inspiration, skills and action via Speakers Who Inspire lecture series, Courageous Conversation about race seminar, and strategic communications to shift understanding of race, poverty, health equity and social change … Convening People for Solutions by supporting people and organizations across sectors to change systems and solve problems including HIV/AIDS, housing, education … Equitable economic development and community food systems … Research & Data for Health Equity by understanding community health and health disparities, listening to and cataloging community needs, commissioning research about health and equity in Pinellas County, publishing and disseminating research data, and studying the impact of policy on people … Grantmaking & Capacity Building by investing in programs and projects to improve community health and equity through grants to nonprofits serving south Pinellas County, grants to multi-year collaborative initiatives to change systems, and nonprofit training and technical support.
Foundation Accomplishments . . . President/CEO Randy Russell told Paradise News, “The FHSP embraces a mission of race equity as the surest means of achieving health equity and improved population health overall. We’re proud of our work surrounding Equity Education as from November 2016 to February 2020, an estimated 2,600 attended our ‘Speakers Who Inspire and Courageous Conversation’ events. Randy Russell, Foundation president/CEO, welcomes attendees to 2017 two-day forum on “Beyond Diversity: An Introduction to Courageous Conversation”
“Since our initial launch in 2015 we graduated from ‘traditional grantmaking’ to ‘making strategic investments to advance systems change, specifically in the realm of race equity.’ From 2015-2017, 51,861 were reached within the sphere of Social Determinants of Health, a $3.7-million-dollar investment.”

Drive-up Food Pantry volunteer at Foundation headquarters. Foundation staff provided a sampling of successes from 2015-2017: Disabled persons helped with permanent and movable ramps for rental units, permanent homes and vertical porches for permanent homes; Methadone program for mothers, with 134 individuals receiving methadone treatments, counseling and support coupled with family case management; LealmanFamily Dream Center – two vans provided over 1,000 residents in poverty transportation in one year, with vans now used for service for COVID testing and vaccinations; Reached 6,000 South St. Pete residents through events focused on Community Navigation highlighting available services previously unknown by residents; Bought a new walk-in cooler and freezer, two refrigerated box trucks, two forklifts and two pallet jacks for St. Pete Free Clinic, expanding their capacity to serve people by 400%; Healthy Schools for Healthy Children – worked with Pinellas County School District to update teacher practice and expand physical activity with increases in grades for prior lower-performing students, reaching 45,000 students in 61 schools. A sampling of successes from 2017-2019 includes: Strategic shifts – listening showed that capacity support was needed to help manage grants regarding evaluation of hiring needs, financial, program delivery and goals and objectives. This influenced the Foundation’s Capacity Building effort to help support dozens of nonprofits and their boards. The Foundation also recognized that race equity data collection was needed. It launched “convening” sessions among providers, funders and learning partners including a shift in funding to BIPOC-led organizations, funded master class facilitation classes, invested in the Equity Atlas and Community Health Needs Assessment with the Health Department, education reports, Housing Scan, Health/Race Equity Supplemental Report and began requiring disaggregated race data collection. This led to 2017=29 grants, 2018=21 grants, and 2019=41 mini grants ($5,000 each to 100% BIPOC-led). The 2018-2020 empowerment grants reached 23,819 individuals (from 74% of agencies reported numbers); Assisted with legal services for people facing eviction, enabling more than 300 families to maintain housing; Civics Education - South Pinellas Youth were trained to advocate and published St. Pete Civic Health Index including race equity; League of Women Voters– financial literacy for immigrants (predominantly LatinX) was provided to 500 families through Project Prosper; Increased

the ability for funded partner organizations to fundraise more effectively resulting in approximately 1,000,000 new dollars in fundraising by smaller nonprofits; 24 Head Start and Early Head Start centers in St. Pete received counseling and support to increase care and outcomes for children through improved care of staff and leaders; 150 Jordan Park residents were supported through after-school tutoring and weekend activities through the Police Athletic League; Through the Lighthouse of Pinellas, over 80 persons with serious mental illness employed; and Pinellas County Homeless Leadership Board collaborated with eight agencies allowing for a “housing first” model instead of using shelters as the first place of residence for homeless persons. The foundation strongly supported the St Pete2020 goals and will continue its support for the StPete2050 initiative.
Looking Ahead . . . Praising the Foundation, Mayor Rick Kriseman said,“The City of St. Petersburg appreciates the work of the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg and anticipates our partnership with them making a difference in our community for generations to come. There is much work to do to build a healthier, more equitable society.” President/CEO Randy Russell emphasized,“We thank the mayor for his continuing support of our work. Improving outcomes for all by creating positive social change is a key initiative at the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg and we believe that prioritizing race equity to achieve health equity improves health for all. “We approach these inequities in our community by not only evaluating the latest data, but by also bringing together the people who are affected by systems change as well as those truly motivated to change the systems. For those of us who have experienced race or class privilege, the time has come to use the same passion and fervor we’ve previously engaged to protect ourselves to also lift others.” [Editor’s Note: Special thanks to Julie Capobianco, Vistra Consulting; President/CEO Randy Russell and Shannon Kalahar, FHSP; and Mayor Rick Kriseman, for their excellent information, photos and comments.] [Feature editor Steve Traiman is president of Creative Copy by Steve Traiman, providing professional business writing services since 1993. HEALTH & WELLNESS Protecting Your Largest Organ by Ryan Baker, MD, FAAFP
Experience the Difference with
Ryan L. Baker, M.D. Family Medicine
“Your primary-care physician may be the first clinician to see signs of this potentially deadly disease.” Your skin is the largest organ in your body, but people don’t think of it as another system that needs to be maintained and cared for. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and early detection of serious skin conditions like melanoma is crucial. For some, your primary-care physician may be the only doctor you visit regularly. Because of this, your primary-care physician may be the first clinician to see signs of this potentially deadly disease. While a dermatologist is the expert, your family doctor can be a starting point in evaluating your skin for cancer. In fact, according to a study conducted at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, skin care screenings performed as part of a routine primary-care provider visit resulted in increased detection. My patients typically bring up any concerns about a strange bump or mole as an afterthought during an appointment for another issue, and I’m more than happy to check it out for them. It’s very reasonable to ask your primary-care doctor to take a look. If you have a mole or other growth that concerns you, your family doctor can usually let you know if it’s normal or needs further investigation. I can at least offer some level of peace of mind. As with any serious disease or condition, prevention is so important. Even minor sunburns cause lasting damage, and repetitive sun injury causes skin breakdown which can lead to skin cancer. Living here in Florida definitely increases your risk for developing skin cancer. Research has shown that having five or more sunburns actually doubles your risk for melanoma. Also, keep in mind that some medications, like antibiotics, can increase your sun sensitivity. The bright side? With early detection and treatment, almost all skin cancers can be successfully removed without complications. So prevent damage first, and then catch it early, The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends seeing a dermatologist at least once a year for a professional skin exam, and you can remember this as “on your birthday, examine your birthday suit.” About Millennium Physician Group: Millennium Physician Group is the largest comprehensive, independent physician group in Florida with more than 550 healthcare providers at 150 locations in 19 Florida counties serving nearly half a million patients. By Nanette Wiser to you or you imagine that they might occur, see whether these feelings healthfully follow from your wishes and desires to have better things occur. Or are you creating them by going beyond your preferences and inventing powerful shoulds, oughts, musts, demands, commands, and necessities? If so, you are turning concern and caution into overconcern, severe anxiety, and panic. Observe the real difference in your feelings!” - Albert Ellis, Ph.D. Body: Pucker up for better health. According to “Kissing: Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Life’s Sweetest Pleasures” by author Andrea Demirjian, a kiss a day can keep the doctor away. A smooch burns 2-3 calories per minute, up to 5-26 calories for makeout kissing. A kiss can boost self-esteem, causing the brain to release happy-making neurotransmitters (oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin) and lower cortisol/stress. According to the book research, once a person starts kissing, blood pressure decreases and heart rate increases. Sip This, Not That: According to the New York Times, in 2021 U.S. consumers spent $6.7 million on supplements of chlorophyll and chlorella (a type of algae), a 17 percent increase. Sales of water with chlorophyll also jumped 356 percent. But the science doesn’t support the claims, yet, that chlorophyllin may have antioxidant properties, which help to combat the damage to our cells caused by an excess of harmful molecules known as free radicals. With no human trials or research to support this claim, it got its start in the 1950s as an additive to toothpaste and Clorets chewing gum for sweet breath. For mild dehydration and other health benefits, sip aloe juice mixed with chilled juice or in a fruit/veggie smoothie. Health Tip: Battle the skeeters with catnip ingredient nepetalactone by mixing 20 drops of catnip and citronella essential oil to 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup witch hazel in a spray bottle.

SPIRITS
DRINK IN THE SUNSHINE.
By Nanette Wiser
To Japan, With Love: Go beyond Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire to tipple Japanese gins in homage to the Tokyo Olympics. They are fabulous in a Negroni, Martini or with tonic. Most are made from rice, barley or corn-based neutral spirits, but some use sweet potato or sugarcane. Infused with indigenous botanicals distilled separately before blending, they are both aromatic and flavorful. Two Japanese gins (Ki No Bi, Suntory Roku) blend with six flavor categories: Base, Citrus, Tea, Herbal, Spice and Floral. These gins use native botanicals such as sakura (cherry blossom), hinoki (Japanese cypress), gyokuro (a shade-grown green tea), sanshō (similar to Sichuan peppercorn) and many local citrus varieties. Look for Nikka Coffey Gin, Ki No Bi Kyoto-Style Dry Gin, Etsu Gin and other exquisite summer sips. One Chicago bar layers the flavors of Japan (yuzu saki) with Scotland’s Botanist Gin with tonic, another Oriental twist on a classic hot weather cocktail. Martini Madness: With the sleek, art deco Pure Martini Bar moving into the bottom floor of the emerging Vantage condos downtown, it’s a shaken or stirred spirit apocalypse. From lychee martinis to elderflower Cosmos, new twists on old faves are all the rage. The 90s’ espresso martini is back, made with fresh brewed espresso, Kahlúa and vodka, shaken and served in a chilled martini glass garnished with three roasted coffee beans. Sip this at Middlegrounds in Treasure Island, one of the best spots other than Social Roost, Flute & Dram, Clear Sky and Seaweed for a two-martini afternoon.
Gazing out over the Gulf of Mexico with a stellar view of the setting sun, 82 Degrees provides nature imbued interiors and fresh Southern coastal cuisine to launch you into the decadence of an unhurried coastal vacation. Enjoy craft cocktail-sipping, fine wine tasting, and local beer distilling with alfresco dining options and locally sourced fare at a premier location destined to become a favorite.

Mudslides: Speaking of Kahlua, publisher Renee’s favorite sip is also in vogue, a Mudslide best made with homegrown Kahlua. Island Grill, Rumfish, Caddy’s and Bongo’s make some of the best Mudslides in town. Whip up Kahlua with this simple recipe pinched from a Tijuana bartender. Ingredients: 2 cups vodka, 2 cups white sugar, 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon vanilla and ½ cup Café Bustelo instant coffee crystals. Directions: Bring the water to a simmer and stir in the sugar, vanilla and coffee crystals. Simmer at low heat for about ten minutes until the mixture resembles a syrup. Let syrup cool. Pour vodka into a Mason jar and add syrup. Refrigerate. Italian Holiday: Thanks to Jarrett Sabatini at Intermezzo, I’m a huge Italian aperitif fan of Aperol and Campari. While he is currently purveying tiki cocktails, I’ve made my summer of love drink the Cardinale with Campari, club soda and Aranciata, a bitter orangeade. Campari’s strong bittersweet flavor with a hint of orange peel, cherry, clove, and cinnamon is a perfect picnic cocktail and I love daSesto Italiano’s take on both this and Aperol Spritz.
DINING Carry-Out Cuisine
By Nanette Wiser Asian dishes and sushi are always a favorite, especially from Nori Thai and Basil Leaf while gourmet Italian meals from Da Sesto Italiano or Villa Gallace served by candlelight will woo your loved one. You can also pick up Italian meals ready to heat at Ippilito’s or Mazzaro’s.
Best Pot On The Beach (red bliss potatoes, an ear of sweet corn, spicy andouille sausage, sweet onions and jumbo shrimp all layered and seasoned served with lemon and Matt’s homemade cocktail sauce) or the Maine-Lander lobster tail pot.
Nosh Charcuterie: Like to graze? Pick up fish spread from Nachmann’s or Ted Peters, add olives from Kalamazoo, cheeses and charcuterie meats from Mazzaro’s or Brooklyn South, or order for pick up from Annata, Bacchus, Lolita or Hawthorne Bottle Shop. Add a Sancerre, crusty French bread and sliced melon and cue the Michael Buble.
Delivery and take-out dining are here to stay, even if people are flocking to restaurants. UberEats, DoorDash and other delivery app services, mail order or chef-made meals and take-out dining popups (Pipo’s To Go, Kuba, Two Dads) are thriving. Dining at home with gourmet restaurant food is the cool trend during hot summers whether it’s for two or 10 people. Hungry? Let’s eat!
Comfort Food: I love Two Dads to Go in Gulfport for the Southeast Asian beef sandwich made with shaved roasted NY Strip with sweet soy, pickled vegetables, sriracha mayo and sesame seeds, pork belly tacos and meatloaf dinner. Meatlovers enjoy Aloha To Go’s Hawaiian BBQ or Sonny’s Ribs with two sides. Delight in Uptowns Eats’ homemade soups and savory sandwiches such as herbed goat cheese, roasted veggies, fig balsamic reduction and arugula on toasted focaccia. Chef-Made Meal Services: 727PREP is a family-owned business specializing in prepared meals that just need heating and come in eco-friendly containers. Order ahead for the week for dishes such as All-American steak or ethnic delights (pan-seared chicken breast, Israeli couscous, and fresh tomato salad with creamy tzatziki or braised chicken with coconut-curry sweet potatoes, jasmine rice, and chana masala).
You can find delicious ready-to-heat meals at Belleair Market (Wonderland chicken, chicken enchiladas, beef stroganoff, mahi fresh spread), Fresh Market, Rollin’ Oats, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Publix and Earth Fare. In addition to Publix and Whole Foods, Kroger will soon deliver food and meals as well in the Tampa Bay area. Ethnic Delights: Gourmet pizzas from Coastal Kitchen (shrimp), Slyce (Greek or mushroom meatball), Gennaro’s or Bavaro step up the pie game. Turn up the salsa and order Cuban dishes beyond the sandwich from Kuba, Pipo’s To Go near Mastry’s, Pipo’s or Havana Harry. With La Segunda Bakery opening downtown, there will be no shortage of good Cuban bread and desserts.
Sea-Soned Fare: For seafood, Outer Banks Boil Co. offers an authentic Coastal Low Country Boil in a pot to-go. Just add liquid (water, beer, white wine), place on your stovetop, steam and serve. We like the
FitLife Foods in downtown St. Pete is crave-worthy, with chef-prepared dishes delivered to your door or available for pick up. World-Class Cuban Cuisine @ SPB Monday, August 23rd, is national Cuban sandwich day, and September is Latin Heritage month, so August and September is the perfect time to talk about this. There is a Cuban infusion of St. Pete Beach underway. As evidence of the growth of the Cuban community in Pinellas, longtime Ybor City bakery famous for their Cuban bread, La Segunda Bakery, just announced a new Fourth Street St. Pete location coming soon. On the beaches for years, until recently, The Floridian in Treasure Island was reader’s choice for the best Cuban sandwich. St. Pete Beach’s Barracuda Deli has also offered a delicious version, made with their own roasted pork recipe.

While Tampa’s Ybor City earned the reputation for being the center of Cuban culture and cuisine in Tampa Bay, two new venues, just a block apart on Blind Pass Road in St. Pete Beach offering “World Famous” Cuban sandwiches, have definitely raised the bar. “Our favorite restaurant at Armature Works in Tampa was KUBA,” said Richard Nummi, “now we can pick up dinner at KUBA Cocina on Blind Pass and enjoy a sunset at the beach.” KUBA ‘en La Playa’ (at the beach) opened a walk-up service window last month at 7525 Blind Pass Road. It was big news for Tampa Bay, with a photo of KUBA’s proprietor Felicia and the art on the side of the Centre of St. Pete Beach given the entire cover page of the Tampa Bay Times Taste section one Sunday. Recently added picnic tables, shaded by sun shields, are available on a first-come basis. Open daily Monday-Saturday 10am-10pm and Sundays 10am-7pm.
There is also limited indoor seating and access to restrooms is available at The Centre of St. Pete Beach. KUBA’s Cuban sandwich won a coveted prize in a Tampa competition and is considered a world-class Cuban sandwich. They even have a breakfast Cuban. KUBA just opened at the Centre of St. Pete Beach in June and is already attracting attention. Amenities continue to improve the dining experience, which includes a traditional Cuban coffee maker offering top quality coffee specialties including our favorite Café Con Leche. KUBA has also submitted an application for a liquor license and plans a premium full liquor bar by the time summer is over. Just one block north of KUBA’s new location is the other new venue for Cuban cuisine in St. Pete Beach. Enjoy Pipo’s Pronto, “Latin Street Food,” which includes some of the favorites from Pipo’s Original Cuban Café, at Mastry’s Brewery, 7701 Blind Pass Road, St. Pete Beach (www.mastrysbrewingco.com). Mastry’s was the beaches’ first craft brewery and has won more than its share of statewide quality competitions since they started brewing in a converted gas station five years ago. Mastry’s Kitchen, an onsite food truck, has recently joined the Cuban infusion by partnering with Pipo’s Original Cuban Café on Bay Pines Blvd. across from the VA hospital. Pipo’s founder and owner, Ramon Hernandez has wished for a location on the beach for years. He enthusiastically made Mastry’s Brewery the first location for Pipo’s Pronto.
SHARABLES are a half dozen appetizers, including such favorites as boneless wings with your favorite sauce, crispy calamari, sweet and spicy grilled pork belly, empanadas, mojo cotija fries, and fresh corn chips and choriqueso (cheese) made with melted award-winning Mastry’s brown ale. PLATES include popular quesadillas with choice of protein or vegetables, a taco salad with optional meat, shrimp or grouper, Pipo’s roasted mojo pork served with a creamy slaw mix and cotija cheese served on fresh tostones. HANDHELDS include an appealing variety of sliders, tacos and wraps, featuring everything from chorizo burgers to Mastry’s Blonde Ale grouper sliders. Pipo’s won the Cuban sandwich competition in Ybor City, amongst other awards, so many times they put them in the Hall of Fame so they could no longer compete. The opportunity to enjoy a combination of Pipo’s cuisine with one of Mastry’s award winning brews is very appealing. I for one am looking forward to judging for myself which is the best Cuban sandwich. By the way, both the chef/owners at Pipo’s and at Kuba are really happy to cater parties. For Kuba catering, call Felicia or Chris 727-409-4009. For Pipo’s, call Ramon 727-394-7476. Tell them you read about them in Paradise NEWS.

La Croisette Restaurant and Bakery. . . Born Again By Peter Roos La Croisette reopened in early June 2021 at 7401 Gulf Blvd. on the corner of Corey Ave. in St Pete Beach, after a year of rebuilding, almost from the ground up. The new owners, Mickael, Nathalie and their two children are recent arrivals from France. It was Beverly’s La Croisette for the past 20 years, but before that, a photo hanging in the building proves it was a breakfast and lunch place with a French bakery called La Croisette in 1986. Nathalie is the curator of La Croisette Museum. She got history photos of the building and the family over the years from both Beverly and her mother-in-law. If you have questions or kind comments, by all means, ask for Nathalie. La Croisette serves both French and American breakfast and lunch daily from 6:30am-1:30pm. The brand-new venue features both indoor and outdoor service. Breakfast is served all day, including real French Croissants and pastries, a variety of eggs any way you like, from a dozen 32

omelets to a dozen benedicts, plus toast, French or conventional, Belgian waffles, frittatas, biscuits and gravy, hash and eggs and what many reviewers describe as “home fries to die for.” The “star” of the breakfast menu, according to Nathalie, “are the croissant sandwiches.”
If posts online are reasonable measures of La Croisette’s success so far, I’d say they are SUPERSTARS! Hundreds of recent 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor and Yelp, along with some delicious looking food photos are evidence that La Croisette’s menu is a hit with customers from everywhere.
Real French croissants are baked each morning by Mickael in a special oven. These fresh-baked flaky pastries are offered a dozen ways including a veggie, a meat lover, with fried chicken or with cream cheese, capers and lox and served with a side of those home fries. Lunch is served weekdays from 11:30am-1:30pm.
Now that the craziness of the height of season is behind us for a little while, plan to check out this new gem. Many of the reviews mention the great food, but also the friendly staff, some of whom you will recognize from Beverly’s if you dined there in the past.
There are a dozen wraps and sandwiches and a half dozen salads $10-12.There is also a French bakery that sells out daily by 2pm and a list of sides you could make a meal out of. While seating ends daily at 1:30pm, pastries are sometimes available until 2pm.
Next time you are thinking of going to the Corey area for breakfast, aim for La Croisette. You will not be disappointed. La Croisette Restaurant and Bakery 7401 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach, FL 33706 727- 851-9845

Market Grower Spotlight Florida Fresh Live Herbs
By Susan Schiber
What would we do without our growers? John and his son Matt grow herbs year-round in Plant City and bring them to the Corey Ave. Market every Sunday! Growing up in Massachusetts Matt knew that sunshine was where he wanted to be year-round. He was accepted to the University of Tampa and the sunshine state became his home. Working various part time jobs during his studies he met a local small herb grower that hired him. He instantly found his passion! The benefits and beauty of fresh live herbs! In 2012 Matt ventured out on his own but needed his dad’s help, so he asked John to come to Plant City and spend 6 to 9 months to help get things growing. Soon they were wholesaling to local sellers. They joined Tampa Bay Markets as vendors and have been on Corey Ave. since opening day October 2014. Today they grow on 2.5 acres with a 4000-sq.-ft. greenhouse. John stayed in Florida and is the face you see at the market, providing you not only with fresh herbs but growing tips, benefits and maybe he will share a recipe secret or two! The Summer Market on Corey Ave. is operating 9am-1pm every Sunday through the end of September with 40+ vendors. • 2019 Hall of Fame Award • Tripadviser.com

PROPERTY LAW
Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.
Concrete Issues floors and other structural elements to provide tensile strength the concrete would otherwise lack. If the Pantheon had rebar, it would probably be in ruins today, like so many other Roman wonders – not taken by the hands of men, but by time itself.
Many Americans grew up like I did, marveling at the amazing history of concrete, which goes back to about 1400 BC for the Greeks. The Roman architectural revolution was based on concrete, and to this day the Pantheon is the world’s largest unreinforced dome, relying totally on concrete for its strength and longevity. We learned that concrete “sets” even under water, and gets harder and harder, year after year, century after century. Western civilization itself, at least as regards to architecture, is a creature of the history of concrete. So, losing so many people in the Surfside, Florida, collapse of the 12-story Champlain Tower as a result of concrete failure came as a great shock to many.

I’ve lived in a number of condominiums over the years, from the 100-story John Hancock building in Chicago, to five stories over parking at Silver Sands condominium in St. Pete Beach, and several in between. I’ve served on the boards of condos, and various committees, so I learned all about concrete damage and restoration, as have many Floridians, primarily in the context of balcony issues. There are several basic differences between the Pantheon and the modern American residential condominium. While the exact contents of the cement itself is quite different, that’s not really the issue. What absolutely IS the major issue is the use of rebar, a steel product that is universally placed in concrete walls,
AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com
The reason rebar is so problematical is that concrete (unless carefully sealed) is porous. Water penetrates the surface, and travels through concrete over time. If a building is on the ocean (or Gulf of Mexico), there is a substantial amount of salt in the air, and that ends up in the rainwater. Together with steel rebar, they create rust. The problem is, rust expands as it forms, and the stress it creates inside a concrete slab causes cracking and fractures. And that brings down buildings. Engineers know all about this stuff, and have for a long, long time. Surfside condo officers and directors received engineering reports all about it, but they were delayed by the millions of dollars in cost to address the issues facing them. And when issues aren’t faced, disaster results. ANDERSON & BRODERSEN, P.A., 350 Corey Avenue, St. Pete Beach, FL 33706 (727) 363-6100 • www.PropertyLawGroup.com

Setting Teens up for Savings Success Learning to manage the flow of money depends on there being money coming in as well as going out.
2)
I
t’s not just adults looking at their savings accounts these days. Kids and teens are looking to kick off their own accounts, too. Achieva Credit Union shares four key tips for success that any teen (and parent) should know when setting up a savings account.
1)
Establish whether there will be a steady income. Many teens may want a debit card, but only set up a checking account if the account holder is bringing in regular money with some kind of job.
Know the fees involved.
Once you start moving your money around – taking money out at ATMs, spending with a debit card or setting up online payments – fees can add up fast. ATM use is a common pitfall. But with a credit union like Achieva, you can easily avoid the fees just by being sure you’re using a partner ATM like the ones at Publix’s Presto locations or in a nationwide shared branch network.
3)
Get used to checking on your account, regularly. Checking your account regularly to see your balance is at the heart of managing your finances. Technology has made spending money easier, but not necessarily managing your money. Seeing their money and how quickly it can go slows their spending. It teaches kids individual responsibility.
4)
Treat this as the foundation for your financial future. Establishing credit is not as easy to start these days as it once was, so consider something like a credit card to build your credit. Your credit score is one of the most important numbers in your personal finances as you get older. Achieva’s “credit builder”credit card (available to those 18 years and older) allows a responsible teen to become accustomed to what having a credit card means and allows them to learn good habits. To learn more, contact Jerri Paul, Achieva Universal Advisor, Certified Financial Counselor in St. Petersburg by calling 800-593-2274, or visit Achievacu.com to make an appointment with one of our St. Petersburg branch locations.

ARTISTS IN PARADISE
Everything’s Coming Up Sunflowers: Local artist Alyssa Marie’s paintings of pelicans, flamingos, sea birds, ocean waves, octopuses and whimsical portraits of sunflowers on murals around town just make you happy. With her husband Braden Everly, you can bask in the visual power of positivity at The Alyssa Marie Gallery. Originally from Colorado, she moved to St. Pete in 2017. “From the get-go, I have had a love for art that I have a difficult time finding words to explain. Growing up, my parents’
beautiful kitchen table was covered in scratches and dents from art projects, residue from hot glue and of course, every color of paint I could get my hands on,” says Alyssa. “As I grew, my love for art cultivated as I went on to pursue my BFA in Communication Design with an emphasis on Fine Art at Metropolitan University of Denver.” Not too long after graduation, the couple embarked on an adventure with their two dogs, parrot and chameleon and made the big move to Florida. Psychology Jamie Goldenberg. Featuring Audrey Hepburn, Frida Kahlo, Amanda Gorman, Stacey Abrams, Aretha Franklin and Lee Miller (whose photos are currently on display at The DALI), Goldenberg’s tee’s are a fashion statement. “The idea was to make the art more accessible. Not everyone can afford original art, but the tees are affordable,” says Goldenberg. “So, it’s another way to get my art out there and celebrate these women.”

It was meant to be, says Alyssa. “I remember one day in 2nd grade, I got in trouble by the teacher in class for doodling palm trees all over my notebook. The funny thing is, I had never been to the ocean to see them in person! Needless to say, I have had a tremendous pull toward the wondrous ocean and all things nautical for as long as I can remember, which is what made my move to Florida that much sweeter... (or saltier?).” Learn more about her art and their Happy Mural Project. www.alyssamariegallery.com discussed the psychology behind boundary breaking women throughout history in July. The subject matter of Goldenberg’s art shows a trajectory from women depicted as objectified to agentic, with her current series featuring progressive women who are changing the world. She recently painted a portrait of Kamala Harris with shattered glass in the background; a picture of the art, the artist, and a t-shirt featuring the art went viral on the Facebook group Pantsuit Nation. moved the delicate work from an upper gallery to cooler basement storage to protect it from rising temperatures while the museum was closed during lockdown. Wax sculptures “start sweating and looking uncomfortable” and staffers “get anxious” during a heatwave, said Peta Motture, the museum’s senior curator.
Scott Bolendz is a photographer of dark natural environments. This exhibition brings together two related bodies of his award-winning work.
“The galleries are south facing and in summer there can be sustained heat.” Five months later, the sculpture was returned to the galleries, when curators noticed a fingerprint on the figurine’s buttocks, which had likely become visible thanks to changes in the chemical composition of the wax.
Against the Sea is a series of elegiac, meditative studies of time-sculpted trees succumbing to the eternal surf, a series Bolendz began as his father succumbed to Parkinson’s Disease. These images give photographic form to a search for solace, understanding, and acceptance during a period of great personal loss. Dark Mountains transports the viewer to remote, high-altitude environments, brimming with awe and anxiety. A survivor of a rare childhood disease, Bolendz engages with the specter of his own mortality in a series of cathartic, personally transformative, photographic journeys into the mountains. The museum holds a large art collection created by survivors, children and grandchildren of survivors, and those who may not have a direct connection to the Holocaust but have been moved to confront the subject in their art. Throughout the 19th century, Doulton Lambeth was well-known for its industrial ceramics. The company then presented a small selection of purely decorative vases, bowls, and jugs at the 1867 Paris world’s fair. These artistic works, later collectively termed Doulton Lambeth ware, were the genesis of a new, uniquely British ceramic style. These sturdy yet beautiful pieces of stoneware fascinated British society. Like the long artistic tradition of British landscape, rural genre scenes, and sporting imagery, Doulton Lambeth ware’s designs are tied to the countryside. Decorated in subtle earth-toned glazes, the line imitates nature. Much of the wares’ delicate incised and applied designs owe to the work of sisters Hannah and Florence Barlow. Access to museums and other cultural venues in France is now contingent on visitors being able to prove that they have been fully vaccinated or have recently tested negative for the coronavirus. The pass sanitaire or “health pass” will be required for venues with more than 50 people. Visitors over 18 will be required to show a QR code with a record of full vaccination, or a negative PCR or antigen test from the previous 48 hours. For children over age 12, the pass will become mandatory after Aug. 30. “If we do not act today, the number of cases will continue to increase,” French President Emmanuel Macron said in an announcement of the change on July 12.
An organization or entity may apply for only one of the programs, which will be rolled out in a phased schedule and reviewed on first come, first complete basis. For information, dates, and application requirements, visit www.stpete.org/ resilience-retention.

The Shaun Hopper Trio is one of my favorite Tampa Bay groups. Shaun Hopper’s fingerstyle acoustic guitar performances will dazzle you both on his original and cover songs (Chet Atkins, Andres Segovia, The Beatles, Queen). Accompanied by Chris Barbosa, a dynamic instrumentalist and composer with 20 years of experience, Barbaso has played as the first chair violist with several orchestras and has performed in Carnegie Hall. Singer/songwriter Jessica Rose’s smooth melodies and captivating and lyrics cover jazz and trendy pop, from Sinatra to Rihanna. Catch them at Ringside Café, The Hideaway, Stirling Wine and other songster hangouts.

Ice Cream Delights: In “Zoey’s Adventures to the Ice Cream Shop,” the hit first story in the Zoey’s Adventures children’s book series, Zoey eagerly anticipates her visit to the Super Awesome Ice Cream Shop on National Ice Cream Day. This beautiful, brightly colored, fun-filled adventure of the adorable, lovable, quirky Golden Retriever rescue pup Zoey is a super sweet tale that provides a valuable lesson for both little ones and grown-ups about patience and good things come to those who wait. “Zoey’s Adventures to the Ice Cream Shop” is written by Ilene Lieber and illustrated by Scott LaFortune and Zohreh Riyahi. A portion of book sales is donated to different animal charitable organizations quarterly. Available on Amazon. His new book, “Beth: Legacy of Love,” is the coming-of-age novel based on a true story of two best friends navigating high school in the late 1970s. Intertwined with a story of corrupt politics and government bureaucracy, “Beth: Legacy of Love” guides us on a journey of life-changing decisions and self-discovery by best friends Beth Davis and Marjorie Williams, both athletic and charismatic. Marjorie succumbed to the temptations of young adulthood while Beth found solace in Christianity. When Beth dies, Marjorie learns that the superficial nature of popularity and beauty are illusionary and ultimately finite. As a family and a community mourn the loss of her friend, the tragedy inspires Marjorie to move on with her life and embrace Beth’s spiritual calling. Events ON-GOING EVENTS Red titles denote Paradise News recommendations. Through Sunday, August 8 – Postcards for Democracy: Mark Mothersbaugh and Beatie Wolfe 10am-4pm Monday-Friday / 11am-3pm Saturday. Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at FSW, 8099 College Parkway SW, Fort Myers. Pop artist and DEVO band member Mothersbaugh collaborated with singer-songwriter Beatie Wolfe to create Postcards for Democracy, a collective art campaign in support of the United States Postal Service and its essential role in our elections. The pair received thousands of cards from the public covering themes such as COVID, democracy, capitalism, the environment, social justice, science and even insomnia. Together, these postcards form a time capsule reflecting our collective experience personally, socially, societally, politically, and environmentally. The exhibition is the first public showing of Postcards for Democracy. 239-489-9313 www.rauschenberggallery.com Through Sunday, August 8 – The Rose and the Beast: Fairy Tales Retold Wed-Fri $39/Sat-Sun $49, appointments available from 3-8pm. freeFall Theatre Co., 6099 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. Adapted from the novel by Francesca Lia Block, this interactive narrative adventure lets you step into Block’s stunning retellings of nine classic fairy tales. Through a series of nine spaces, designed by a team of scenic designers, audiences will have the opportunity to interact with the environments in surprising ways. Guests will move through the experience with their own party. This marks the return to freeFall’s indoor theater. 727-498-5205 www.freefalltheatre.com Through Sunday, August 15 – Emerging Artists Exhibition Wed-Fri, Noon-5pm, Creative Pinellas, 12211 Walsingham Rd., Largo. Ten of Pinellas County’s rising artists are presenting new original work: Tatiana Baccari, Chelsea Catherine, Nick Davis, Nikki Devereux, John Gascot, Mason Gehring, Gabriella Krousaniotakis, Yuly Restrepo, Sara Ries, and Emily Stehle. Each of the artists has been awarded grants from Creative Pinellas. This is the first large-scale public reception at the gallery since COVID-19 hit. 727-460-5477 www.creativepinellas.org Through September 19 – COVID Ribbon Memorial 7am-5pm daily, free, Creative Pinellas Courtyard, 12211 Walsingham Road, Largo. The COVID Ribbon Memorial was created by photographer and visual artist Cathy Tobias to offer people a tangible and visual way to honor the lives that were lost, to remember, and to mourn loved ones. It consists of colorful ribbons tied, one at a time, onto a strong twine. Each ribbon represents one person who has died in Florida due to this deadly virus. The memorial has more than 37,400 ribbons and spans the length equivalent to three football fields. The memorial has previously been exhibited on the beach at Anna Maria Island and the Morean Art Center in St. Petersburg. 727-460-5477 www.creativepinellas.org
EVENTS CALENDAR Friday, August 6-September 12 – Against the Sea/Dark Mountains $10 adults, Noon-5pm/7pm Fridays, Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, 400 N Ashley Dr., Cube 200, Tampa. This exhibition by Scott Bolendz brings together two related bodies of his award-winning work. Against the Sea is a series of elegiac, meditative studies of time-sculpted trees succumbing to the eternal surf. These images give photographic form to a search for solace, understanding and acceptance during a period of great personal loss. Dark Mountains transports the viewer to the sublime reaches of remote, high-altitude environments. This series brims with awe and anxiety. 813-221-2222 www.fmopa.org

WHAT’S HOT: Electric Bikes By Nanette Wiser
Photo: Ebike Adventures of St. Pete / Mural by @tatunga
According to The New York Times, two-wheeled adventures took off in 2019-2021. Regular bike sales were up 65% and electric bikes rolled in a 145% increase 2019-2020. Bikes were hard to purchase during the pandemic, and two-wheeled adventures continue to be popular. I got hooked when I heard musician David Byrne had a fold-up ebike he used while on tour to explore neighborhoods. For older folks 65+ who like to be active, an electric bike is a gift. For people of any age, the eco-appeal of an electric bike is another draw, sometimes as an alternative to local errands or a daily commute by car. Rad Power Bikes from Seattle are the most popular, with fat tires perfect for riding rough terrain or the beach or trails where permitted. Fast Company, Time and cycling magazines rank them as one of the best ebikes. I also like the Electric Bike Company’s Model X, assembled in the U.S. and customizable, with little motor noise, Schwalbe Fat Frank tires, aluminum frame and a comfortable saddle and retro hand bar. But they are not cheap, starting at $1299 and up. The best value may be the Aventon Pace 350, starting at $1,099. Things to consider when buying an e-bike include performance, price, comfort, handling, value, reliability, fun, aesthetics, and overall e-factor; how fast the motor will propel you; and battery life. Good disc brakes and durable wide tires are important. You might want a battery that unlocks from the bike (preventing theft) and can be charged off the bike; also safer for hauling on a bike rack or carrying upstairs. You can attach a bike light instead of an integrated lighting system that is powered by the bike or a rear rack as an optional feature. Interested in riding the trend? At Finish Line Scooters, you can rent an electric bike to see if it suits you for $25/hour, minimum two hours. Buy an ebike there or at Pedego Electric Bikes, Action Wheelsports and other local bike dealers. Also check out Ebike Adventures of St. Pete for an ebike tour of downtown murals and The Pier. www.ebikeadventuresofstpete.com FYI: Know where you can ride your electric bike in Florida. www.gelchlaw.com/blog/cycling-law/ florida-law-for-e-bikes-electric-bicycles ParadiseNewsFL.com | AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2021

PET HEALTH
By Dr. Scot Trefz, D.V.M. 2 to 8 Weeks: Sense of smell and hearing will improve dramatically by week four. Steady on their feet with improved vision, kittens in a litter start playing together. Teeth begin to appear around three weeks. They learn how to use the litter box and groom themselves. They still rely on their mother for feedings but will gradually become more independent. Kittens learn how to interact with other animals and people. They can be gently handled for short periods and play sessions with people should increase.
Kitten’s Developmental Milestones Birth to 2 Weeks: Kittens can’t see or hear when they’re born but develop those senses quickly. During their first two weeks, kittens mostly sleep. They identify mom by scent and snuggle close to her and their littermates. Kittens mostly sleep. Toothless newborns rely on their mothers for food. Mothers lick them, which also helps them go to the bathroom. Kittens’ eyes and ears open for the first time.
8 to 12 Weeks: Young cats can begin to eat kitten food and may be separated from their mothers to join new homes. Play becomes a favorite pastime. Kittens enjoy pouncing on invisible prey, zooming through the house, chasing their tails, and play fighting with their littermates, or other cats. 3 to 6 Months: Baby teeth begin to fall out preparing for permanent teeth. Now is the time to catproof your home. Teething kittens like to chew on all sorts of objects! Kittens begin to change from fluffballs into lean, muscular young cats. Although your kitten is still young, it will soon be able to reproduce.
6 to 18 months: Your kitten will grow from teenager to adult during this stage. When your kitten is a year old, switch to adult cat food. It no longer needs the increased calories and nutrients that kitten food provides. Otherwise, your cat may develop a weight problem. Start the switch by mixing cat and kitten food together, gradually decreasing the amount of kitten food. Visit your veterinarian within the first several weeks after your new addition arrives for a checkup and to put kitty on the vaccine schedule to stay healthy. Cats can become sexually mature as young as six months. Spaying and neutering also reduce your pet’s risk of developing certain types of cancers, including breast and testicular cancer. Spaying or neutering should be scheduled for no later than five months to prevent pregnancy. If you enjoyed this article, visit Dr. Scot M. By Nanette Wiser Looking to invite butterflies? Plant species with nectar needed by adults. Butterflies are attracted by sweet-, pungent- and acrid-smelling flowers that are orange, yellow, pink, purple and red. Plants with deep throated, drooping or enclosed flowers are unsuitable for nectar-gathering. Some of these, especially white flowers that are fragrant at night, may attract moths. Shell Game: Award-winning author Cynthia Barnett’s new book, The Sound of the Sea: Seashells and the Fate of the Oceans, “will have you marveling at nature.” (New York Times) Acclaimed environmental author Cynthia Barnett blends cultural history and science to trace our long love affair with seashells and the hidden lives of the mollusks that make them. Spiraling out from the great cities of shell that once rose in North America to the warming waters of the Maldives and the slave castles of Ghana, Barnett has created an unforgettable account of the world’s most iconic seashells. She begins with their childhood wonder, unwinds surprising histories like the origin of Shell Oil as a family business importing exotic shells, and charts what shells and the soft animals that build them are telling scientists about our warming, acidifying seas. Barnett is an Environmental Journalist in Residence at the University of Florida Gainesville and author of Rain.

“Get Sirius About Your Future”
August 2021 Astrology Summer is still in full swing with everyone enjoying vacations and getting ready for school again. The New Moon in sunny Leo on the 8th begins the lunar cycle this month with a fun vibration and creative expression! We are chatty and friendly and vacillate between responsibilities and downtime. When thinking planet Mercury visits practical Virgo on the 11th, logic takes over and decisions will be from factual findings instead of emotional desire. Love planet Venus goes home to relationship sign Libra on the 16th when partners and friendships become more important than duties and we won’t mind spending a little to enjoy making memories with those we love. On the 22nd, the Sun moves on to industrious Virgo keeping us grounded and focused. We will analyze information before making decisions, stay on our routine and find contentment in the necessary daily patterns of our life. A Full Red Moon in the progressive sign Aquarius on the 22nd will peak the lunar cycle on the same day that the Sun changes signs! This full moon aspects Jupiter, the planet of philosophy and higher learning. This is a great time to expand our knowledge of what comes to light and work on ways to improve humanitarian organizations and connections to foreign countries. Communication planet Mercury leaves logic behind and gets friendly in Libra beginning the 30th. We judge things in complete fairness and need time to make important decisions. Our minds are creative and enjoy pleasant conversations with others and about their interests.
LEO: Your personal new year begins now with a fresh perspective and open mind. Energy goes into earning; income enhanced. Mid-month enjoy short trips, conversations. Later, relationships take the spotlight; enjoy!

LIBRA: Energy goes into private interests; privacy is enjoyed. New paths open for socializing; networking. Mid-month you gain favor and enjoy popularity. Romance and recreation are highlighted as the month closes.
ARIES: New paths open for romance and creative outlets. Spending is likely. Energy is focused on work, improving health, and habits. Later, the spotlight falls on social activities, friendships, and your future goals.

Homelife and family are in the spotlight later with expansion and growth opportunities. SAGITTARIUS: You have favor in career areas and assert yourself in gaining position. Travel or learning can bring new opportunities. Mid-month socialize. Later, conversations and short trips may bring many benefits. CAPRICORN: You are ready to travel and enjoy an adventure now! A new plan with finances and resources is helpful. Mid-month career or position is enhanced. Then, the focus falls on earning and the many options you have.
TAURUS: Home and family life are active with new options; let go of old patterns. Active hobbies are enjoyed. Health improves and work goes well. Career and status are in the spotlight with opportunities for growth possible. GEMINI: Daily life is busy with new options; short trips and conversations. Projects at home get your attention; redecorate, enjoy family. Mid-month the fun begins. Your spotlight is on travel and expanding your understanding! September 2021 Astrology The last three weeks of summer are here and will be over before you know it! The New Moon in studious, organized Virgo on the 6th begins the lunar cycle and gets us on task for any details we need to address as the season ends. New energy flows into work, finances, and position as well as health and well-being now. We can start new patterns and habits by letting go of old values and interests. Love and money planet Venus visits passionate and resourceful Scorpio on the 10th. We get serious about what and who is important to us and how we want to invest our time and energy ahead. Action and energy planet Mars visits relationship sign Libra on the 14th and spends the last two weeks of this month focused on fairness and what we want to create with both personal and business connections. This will be an excellent time to network with friends, groups, and organizations, too. The Full Harvest Moon in the psychic, creative sign Pisces makes its grand appearance on the 20th. This will illuminate our inner, private world and a need to search within. A retreat from the daily grind to quiet the mind can allow our innermost thoughts and feelings to be revealed to us. It is a great time to consider our dreams and if we are willing to make them happen. The Autumn Equinox occurs as the Sun enters Libra on the 22nd and fall begins! A new season that’s filled with fresh energy as we leave behind the many daily duties to connect in our relationships. It is a social time, a time for love, beauty, and entertaining others in all areas of our lives. On the 26th, we are ready to reach and REconnect as Mercury will Retrograde its last time this year. A REunion or REvisit with others would be enjoyed. REview, REdo and RElease the next three weeks and then it 68

ENCOURAGING WORDS
By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones
We All Shine On Last night after watching the nine-o’clock news (not recommended) I took McDoodle, my dog, out for a late evening stroll. I couldn’t help but stop and stare at the full moon; it was exquisite. I thought, “Wow, that is stunningly bright–I don’t even need my flashlight.” Knowing that the moon has no light of its own, other than what it reflects off the sun, I thought, “I am quite literally standing in sun light right now.” What a perfect metaphor for the interconnectedness of all things–even when it isn’t visible to the human eye. After gazing at the moon for several more moments, I realized humans (and probably animals) have done the same thing for countless millennia–staring at that same mystical light in awe and wonder. In a heartbeat I forgot about the pandemic and the nine-o’clock news and instantly felt a kinship with humankind, animals, the planet, and a universe expanding at the speed of light spanning eternity. THE TAKEAWAY: In uncertain and challenging times it can be a wise practice to pause and seek to align with something larger than the news of the day to aspire to. The key is Photo Courtesy Earth.com
to remember we are all part of something far greater than ourselves which extends far beyond our capacity to comprehend; something that affirms we are one with the sacred continuum of life–even if we can’t always see it. With all that is going on in our world today, which seems to contradict our oneness, that is something worth remembering. We all shine on, indeed.
