The Centre-St. Pete Beach By Michael Moses

Stop Suffering and Take Control of Your Well-being!

THE CENTRE-ST. PETE BEACH 7525 Blind Pass Road, St. Pete Beach FL 33706 727.258.2001 | www.TheCentreSPB.com

#1 PAIN (inflammation) #1 ANXIETY #1 SLEEP

Did you know….. A leading international physician at a recent Florida medical conference said the #1 reason people seek out Over The Counter (OTC) cannabis and medicinal cannabis is: Yes, there are THREE number 1 reasons. They go hand in hand, and they are intertwined. This was my takeaway…. Sleep - IF we don’t sleep well our bodies don’t self-heal resulting in more inflammation (pain) and more anxiety. Anxiety - IF we remain anxious then we don’t sleep and therefore our bodies stay more inflamed and have more pain. Pain (Inflammation) IF we don’t treat inflammation, we don’t sleep as well and increase our anxiety. The report showed the number 1 reason is all three: PAIN, ANXIETY and SLEEP. The Centre @ St Pete Beach, located at 7525 Blind Pass Road in St. Pete Beach 727-258-2001 is committed to normalizing the topic of OTC cannabis - CBD and medicinal cannabis. Triverde Health is the Centre’s medicinal certification partner. At the office of Dr. Luis Ycaza, located within The Centre, patients are seen and are guided through the journey of certification, recertification, and state card application, even if they’d previously gotten their recommendation somewhere else. Well, over a thousand patients have joined the Triverde Family and gotten their cards at The Centre and others are applying, renewing and transferring to their service there every week.

“I wanted to get my medicinal card, but I have avoided getting my recommendation because all I hear is it is so difficult…Then I went to Triverde Health at The Centre @ St. Pete Beach and it was easy peasy!” I am so much better now. - Thank you Triverde and Dr. Ycaza

Did you know….. That on average each day here in America on average 22 veterans commit suicide… Please, please, come out to The Centre SPB on Saturday, November 13th to support our service men and women in raising awareness of what they and we all can do to increase awareness of suicide and help prevent it in the future. Join Pablo Bicca @1620marine, some of the area’s best cannabis educators with booths representing some of the better dispensaries in Tampa Bay. Some of The Centre’s patients have been recorded, talking about how medicinal cannabis helped give them relief from debilitating asthma, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, anxiety, sleep issues and numerous other modalities. Patients are welcome to see these videos before committing to go for their own certification. The Centre has been featured on this page each issue for the past two years with information about benefits like: 1. Insomnia relief 2. Helping a lacking appetite

Manage the side effects of chemo that cause nausea and pain. 3. Cancer fighting Inhibit growth of aggressive cancer & neutralize tumor development. 4. MS pain management 5. Prevent alzheimer’s 6. Relieve arthritis 7. PTSD treatment The venue is also a terrific 5,000 square foot event location where they are holding educational sessions helping patients understand the benefits people are finding, not from getting high on pot, but from maintaining a micro-dose of the active ingredients in medicinal cannabis, CBD and THC active in their systems. Maintaining a micro-dose that does not cause the “out of control feeling” people remember from being high on marijuana. Monthly memberships are being offered with special privileges and discounts on The Centre’s products and services. The Centre is also home to Kuba En La Playa, an award-winning Cuban Fusion restaurant that moved here from Tampa’s Armature Works. It is open daily for dinner and there is a location-wide alcohol license as well, so you can have a beer, a sangria or your favorite cocktail with your meal as well. There’s a massage and meditation room and a large yoga room where classes are held several times each week. The Centre is also available for rent for holiday, birthday or anniversary parties and events. Kuba can do the catering, or you can bring in your own food and drinks and use The Centre’s kitchen if you wish. Call sooner rather than later to reserve a date, so you won’t be disappointed. Call or text 727-258-2001, stop in, or visit Triverde Health online at TheCentreSPB.com.

PERSONAL FINANCE

SETTING THE BAR

REEL HIGH CRAFT COCKTAILS & DELICIOUS DISHES he arrival of fall and cooler weather brings with it thoughts of Thanksgiving and the holiday shopping season, which, of course, kicks off with Black Friday. Last year, with stores limiting capacity and operating hours because of the pandemic, many shoppers turned to e-commerce websites. This year, with the majority of stores being open to the masses again, bargain hunters might be keen to get out of the house and trek to their favorite stores. Regardless of whether you intend to shop online or offline, here are some tips to help you check off all the items on your list without creating unnecessary financial stress. CREATE A BUDGET. Assign a spending limit for each gift recipient. Don’t forget to include expenses in your overall holiday budget. Taking out a flexible personal loan from Achieva during the holiday season can help you bridge budgetary gaps while not spending beyond your means. BE LIKE SANTA: MAKE A LIST. Shopping without a list can quickly lead to a busted budget. Stick to your list by tracking each purchase as you make it — and don’t forget to check it twice.

6000 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach 727. 329.1428 | RumFishGrill.com

DO YOUR RESEARCH. Online shopping savvy can be a game-changer. Look up prices before you shop and compare them to what’s being charged in stores — some of which will offer price adjustments to help you get the best deal. GET CREATIVE. Are you a maker or a baker? Don’t be afraid to give homemade presents. They can be a cost-effective yet heartfelt and meaningful way to show how much you care. SHOP INTEREST RATES. Before you use a credit card to buy gifts, make sure you’re getting the best interest rate. Using a card with a low annual percentage rate (APR) and transferring balances from high-interest cards can help you pay off holiday debt faster. Achieva’s Cash Rewards Mastercard offers lower interest rates for customers with good credit and allows you to earn cash back on purchases. Holidays should be joyful, not stressful. Achieva can help you navigate the holidays (and the rest of the year) with less financial stress, and we can help with things like helping you get a personal loan or transferring your credit card balance to an Achieva card with a lower interest rate. Visit one of our branch locations or call 800-593-2274 so we can learn about your needs and see how we can help. Insured by the NCUA. ParadiseNewsFL.com | OCTOBER 2021

Keith & Tina Slater

Redefining The Real Estate Experience

Entrepreneurial at heart, real estate broker Keith and his real estate agent wife, Tina Slater, were confident they could create a better real estate experience for their clients by opening their own real estate office. They co-own Coastal Home Advisors Real Estate. ”I’ve been in the real estate business since the 90’s,” says Keith. He owned a mortgage and title company in addition to a commercial and residential development firm before becoming a licensed Realtor in 2007. Keith’s experience is a huge factor in keeping the process moving once under contract. He is hands-on throughout the process and assists in all aspects of the transaction from mortgage to title and everything in between. As for Tina, she earned her real estate license in 1993 before blazing her trail in the corporate world as an advertising and marketing consultant. She joined Keith in 2016, and they haven’t looked back. “Our commitment is to serve in the best interest of our clients and to support our agents with the tools and resources they need to be successful,” says Tina.“Our real estate brokerage business model easily adapts to the ongoing changes our industry is facing.” The location of our office was key,” says Keith. The office is strategically located in Dolphin Village between Publix and CVS in St. Pete Beach, which has 4,000 visitors/day. Coastal Home Advisors enjoys its fair share of activity. “We are thrilled with the walk-in traffic and have met a lot of homeowners from the area as well as people who want to purchase a home, second home, investment or commercial property. Some just stop in to chat about the market and our office,” says Keith.

“We go through about 600 property flyers/month” Keith continued. Coastal Home Advisors has printouts of local homes and condos for sale, as well as market stats with 24-hour access via bins outside the office. “We simply let people shop how they want to shop,” says Tina. They can come in our office to chat, take the printed information outside, or interact with our Window Vision touch screen. “They just call us when they are ready to buy or sell.” Window Vision is a 24/7 interactive touch screen, exclusive to Coastal Home Advisors in 33706. Simply insert a number for listings, market stats, community information, and more.“Our location promotes more exposure for our sellers than any other brokerage in the area as a featured listing on Window Vision.” Coastal Home Advisors Real Estate and their full-time knowledgeable agents are a great choice for your residential, investment, and commercial real estate needs. WHAT’S NEW

on Corey Avenue By Peter Roos

Two blocks east, Corey Landings, a proposed high-end apartment complex at the east end would add over 300 units, with studios renting for $2,000+. The street’s salons and saloons, boutiques, galleries, and gift shops have somehow largely survived the challenges of the past few years, although some proprietors are starting to talk about wanting to retire. Corey’s gift shops, Paradise Gifts and Home Décor and Simply Perfect Home Décor, Gifts and Accessories are looking forward to the return of our seasonal residents. Robbie Caan at Simply Perfect said she stocked up on almost all their most popular items early as soon as she heard about the global supply chain issues being caused by the virus. The most common thing heard from gift shoppers in their store is “That’s Simply Perfect.” Customers spending $20 can have a FREE Simply Perfect turquoise bag, which, on future visits promises them 10% OFF whatever fits in the bag. It is truly a gift that keeps on giving.

What’s new in the Corey area? You may not notice much but read on! Downtown St. Pete Beach has survived, and merchants are on the mend from the pandemic, red tide, and sewer road construction. The future of the area looks bright.

Corey’s finest glass and ceramics gallery, Vincent Williams, is having a sale, offering 20% off on every amazing thing in their gallery. Owen Sweet moved his jewelry store from Corey to South Pasadena last year. There is a new treasure of a sweet shop there, next to London Hair, with an incredible artist at work in an entirely different medium. Coco Addiction opens at 9am Wed.-Sun. for coffee and croissants, but the real treasure in the case are personal cheesecakes and chocolates that look more like collectable art. They even sell chocolate caviar.

At Corey and Gulf Blvd., Beverly’s was sold and completely rebuilt inside and reopened as La Croisette by a charming young French couple. They serve French and American breakfasts and baked goods with many popular items built around the amazing French croissants they bake in-house daily. If you are lucky enough to meet the owner, ask her about the history of the name.

Janine Ritchie and her daughter Cassidy Raasch recently re-branded the crystal and bead shop at 425 Corey Ave. as a metaphysical store named “As Above So Below.” They are scoring 5-star reviews for their selection, knowledge, and helpfulness. Like many Corey businesses they are there 10am-5pm Tues.-Sat., 9am-1pm on Sundays. Call 727-289-3223 with questions.

Kuba En La Playa opened at the Centre of St. Pete Beach, 2 blocks north of Corey. There’s a walk-up window on Blind Pass Rd. with picnic tables on 76th. There are ordering and seating options inside The Centre as well. See pages 30 and 32 in Paradise NEWS Aug.-Sept. issue, except Felicia’s phone number is 727-409-3009 (it was wrong in our August issue).

There are more watering holes in the Corey area than ever. The Swigwam Beach Bar is back to full strength, joined by its neighbor, the Twisted Tiki, which celebrated its first anniversary in September. The Shaded Keg, formerly Tapz, and the Shell Store had closed and are reopening as Grape’s Wine Café. Elizabeth has been serving wine to her boutique customers and selling them bottles and cases from her boutique for long enough, she says. She knows the boutique-and-wine bar combination will be an asset to the Corey area. She also plans for charcuterie boards and the like.

A new fine dining option opened as well, 82 degrees at the new Saint Resort, serving 3 meals and craft cocktails daily. See Paradise NEWS June-July. The historic Beach Theater has a new owner who has been asking the community for input and support for the building’s future. After sitting vacant since 2013, broker Hendrik Bisanz of Sea Salt Properties LLC, (with offices next door to La Croisette) was involved with the Beach Theatre’s sale to Christopher Scott. There were 10 competing offers. After a bidding war, Scott purchased the theater as-is for $652,000 – $173,000 over list price. 14

Two blocks north, Mastry’s Brewery and Kitchen is offering the freshest and some of the finest craft brews in all of Tampa Bay. To go along with your favorite brew, Mastry’s owner Matt Daum has partnered with Ramon Hernandez of Pipo’s Original Cuban Café across from the VA at Bay Pines to provide a selection of Pipo’s Cuban cuisine at the Mastry’s Kitchen Food Truck. With the weather cooling off a bit they are even serving lunch.

The Corey Sunday Market operated in a smaller footprint an hour earlier all summer long, and just returned to their full footprint and 10am-2pm schedule this month. The Corey Area Business Association (CABA) is host for the market which has been expertly run by Susan Schiber of Tampa Bay Markets. CABA also hosts the Arts and Craft festivals, which bring out residents and visitors to enjoy the live music and wonderful things to see and buy. The first few dates for these festivals include this month, October 23-24 and December 4-5 for pre-holiday shopping and January 8-9 and April 9-10, 2022. On Art Festival weekends, the Corey Sunday Market sets up in the post office block. There is prime ground floor office space available across the street from the post office with plentiful off-street private parking, where Keller Williams outgrew the space and moved to Treasure Island’s old Bank of America building. For leasing inquiries, building management is upstairs in the back at Native Properties. CABA has been saving up proceeds from the market and craft shows through the challenging times, and is about to begin an aggressive marketing program, including additional monthly events with street closures and parties in the streets. Annabel’s boutique on the Beach Theatre side of the block is stocked for season, and its neighbor, Natural Comfort Shoes, has transitioned its Corey location into a full-line retail store with new styles of some of the world’s best shoes and fashionable Florida style casual clothing. There are also newer boutiques north of Wells Fargo, including JoJo’s and High Tide, carrying fashions for both men and women, surrounding Beach Hair Affair and the new Gym Barbershop. You may know that everyone’s favorite downtown restaurant, bar and entertainment venue, Chill, changed hands last year. It was rescued by Ken Hautmann and his fiancee’ Kim Beidelschies, who have tried to maintain the menu and operating formula based on prior owner Ruthie Hill’s most popular concepts. “The menu still features such favorites as shrimp and grits,” said Ken. “We have had the same hiring challenges as everyone else, although we still have a number of great, loyal, hardworking people that you have seen at Chill for years. Live entertainment is featured Wednesday through Saturday with the popular Motel Funk playing every other Friday.” Although the pandemic put an end to the buffet, a popular brunch menu is served Friday through Sunday. Dining outside at Chill on Sundays, when the market is on, is truly unique experience. The premium full liquor bar is fully stocked and mimosas are featured. The weather is getting perfect for outdoor dining and there is more outdoor seating than ever, even extending into the street, with strategically placed umbrellas. Check out Chillstpete.com for a complete menu and a link to the current entertainment lineup. Everyone’s favorite Oyster Bar, PJ’s is ready for season. We recently joined a milestone birthday party for (one of several enjoyed by Pat Packer (of Harp & Thistle fame) there in their “private party room”. The restaurant did an amazing job of satisfying the 30 or so there selecting from the entire menu.

Pat invited everyone to come join her at the Blue Parrot, next to city hall on Corey for a dance with the 16-piece Tomkats Orchestra that plays there on Monday night from 7-9pm. Pat said she is there every Monday. A new shop Koncrete Party Skateboards indoor skate plaza and skate shop is located at the mouth of Gulf Blvd next to PJ’s Oysters. A full-service skate shop specializing in all the new products that are hard to find, KPSB focuses on building community bonds through youth skateboarding culture and more. Equipped with a half pipe inside and street section to skate, ping pong, video games, a snack shack and more. This is the newest premier sports spot on the beach offering mentorship and skateboarding lessons with a safe place to enjoy your day or evening. 7470 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach. koncreteparty.com Facebook, Instagram @koncretepartyskateboards A few doors south just off Corey Ave., Ted Stice and Craig DeBernardo opened Category 36 Taphouse and Kitchen, 7430 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach, 727-575-7317. They are open at 11am Tues-Sat. Fresh dough made in-house daily along with homemade marinara sauce makes arguably the finest stombolis and pizzas plus wings five ways; numerous salad options and more are available along with St. Pete Beach’s largest selection of beers on tap, 36 rotating taps including many local craft options. There are indoor as well as outside seating options and you can pick up your meal, eat there, or have it delivered by Door Dash. Just order for delivery from SPBPizzeria.com to get the same amazing quality. More like a brew pub menu than a bar menu, it keeps growing: Fried Shrimp, Buffalo Chicken Subs and Chicken Parm subs were recently added. Covid due to “tremendous growth in parking revenue at our top-ranked beaches and an upsurge in building plan reviews and permits as the city’s building moratorium comes to an end.” City Manager Alex Rey said,“The fiscal year 2021-22 budget generally holds the line on expenses, with the few areas that we’re adding money to related to strategic initiatives. General fund revenues had a nice level of growth … that allows us to increase the amount toward capital infrastructure.

Good news for 2022,

from taxes to new developments. Story by STEVE TRAIMAN

With increased property values the past few years, resulting in more income from county property tax revenue, key barrier island towns including St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island and Madeira Beach are mostly maintaining current millage rates and holding down major property tax increases for the new fiscal year that began October 1. ST. PETE BEACH City commissioners voted to adopt the same millage rate since 2015 at 3.15 mils – putting emphasis on being able to fund expensive capital improvements in 2022 and beyond. Assistant City Manager/Finance Director Vince Tenaglia told the commission the city was able to handle any drop in revenue during the height of

“This year the city has been extremely successful in pursuing federal and state funds. We got awarded a $1.5 million grant from the state to assist in the road restoration as part of the sewer force main project, $4.8 million from the federal American Recovery Program and we are hopeful to receive a $2 million grant from the state for a sewer project for a total of over $8 million in support.” “Of course, we have a big risk in terms of what we are doing as a result of the water threats analysis, ” Mayor Al Johnson added. “This analysis is what scares me as we have a huge subaqueous line replacement coming down the pike that will be close to $10 million.” Tenaglia told commissioners that keeping the millage rate at 3.15 should raise about $10,980,696 because the city’s property values are up 5.07%. Among the new projects are the opening of The Bellwether in the former Grand Plaza Hotel, opening of the new Saint Resort and 82 Degrees restaurant, renovation of the former Holiday Inn on Gulf Boulevard into the new Hilton Garden Inn, and a recent proposal by a development group for the east end of Corey Avenue for a new complex with a 234-unit condo/apartment building, parking garage, 5,000-square-foot restaurant and about 3,950 square feet of retail space.

Public hearings on the proposed budget were set for Sept. 13 and Sept. 27, with a final vote on the new budget at the Sept. 27 commission meeting.

Sanding Ovations

TREASURE ISLAND “The city’s focus has been on streamlining services delivery, on infrastructure and sustainability, updating the comprehensive plan and rewriting the Land Development regulations, securing funding for the maintenance of the bridge, and presenting a phased approach towards the replacement of the remaining city facilities,” City Manager Amy Davis told commissioners at August 4-5 budget hearings. “Reconstruction and elevation of the Master Lift Station for wastewater is one of the various projects focusing on infrastructure improvements. “The city’s tax base increased by 5.69% as a result of continued building and renovation activity that has been consistent throughout the last couple of years throughout the county. The property value increases this budget year is largely due to an increase in housing values. “The city also will see more benefits from such additions as the new Crabby’s on the Pass, replacing the iconic Gators that had been a fixture for more than 30 years. Also, the opening of the new City Hall Center, built in the transformed former Allied Insurance building with five floors of streamlined offices and services to include a large community room and smaller rooms that will be available to the public to rent for events, meetings or programs, with move-in completed in 2022.“ Davis continued,“The iconic Sanding Ovations sculpture event will be held in November over two weekends this year (18-21 & 26-28) to help promote social distancing and give more time to enjoy the sand sculptures. The event is held on the beach behind the Bilmar Beach Resort and draws many thousands of area residents and tourists.

“The 2022 budget proposes the city adopt a property tax rate of 3.8129 mills, 2 mills higher than the current millage rate of 3.6129. This will enable the city to achieve the 0.5 mill required to fund the Causeway Bridge capital maintenance into the future. The city also plans to raise most parking meter rates from $2.75 to $3.00 an hour and increase non-resident City Marina boat slip rates by $275 to $600 a month. It will also increase garbage pick-up fees by 4%, increase both recycling and stormwater fees by 10%, plus an average 5% increase in sewer rates. “By FY 2023, the last year of a five-year-plan to generate revenue In the stormwater fund that will be sufficient to mostly support the level of stormwater improvements needed. The budget reflects the anticipated American Rescue Plan Act funds, state and federal legislation requests, Southwest Water Management District grants and various other grants that total about $10.1 million.” Second reading and public hearing for the official ordinance was set for Sept. 20, before the regular commission meeting to establish the tentative property tax rate for the new fiscal year starting Oct. 1. MADEIRA BEACH Before he resigned September 1 when his contract was not extended, Bob Daniels, Madeira Beach City Manager, told Paradise News,“Our property values are up about Madeira Beach Interim City Manager 8.5% so we’re able to keep the Bob Daniels same millage rate as the past fiscal year. New properties like the Cambria Hotel opened, we should have groundbreaking for the Schooner Hotel in the third quarter, movement on the triangle property at Madeira Way and 150th Ave., and we will be celebrating our 75th anniversary all year long. “Among highlights, we’ll celebrate in 2022 with one major monthly event, kicking off with the Seafood Festival at John’s Pass in January. Through my career, I’ve always believed ‘we have to show progress every day’, and with HEART – H is for Honesty, E is ethics, A is Accountability, R is for Ready (every day), and T is for Teamwork.” At a special Sept. 7 meeting, the Commission extended a new city manager contract to Lee Staab, former county manager of Grand County, Colorado, and a city manager in Minot, North Dakota, with Daniels the second choice. However, on Sept. 10, Mayor John Hendricks announced that Staab had turned down the job due to personal reasons.

Bob Daniels agreed to stay on as interim city manager on a month-to-month contract while the commission decides whether to extend him a new contract or start another review of the original 28 candidates, a number of whom have taken themselves out of the running. Mayor Hendricks told Paradise News,“As a result of this situation, at a special meeting September 22, the commission decided to reopen applications for the City Manager position. Bob Daniels will not reapply and was extended the 40-day notice, staying on as interim city manager through October and possible later if necessary.” The mayor also has a very positive outlook for 2022 and beyond, adding to Daniels’ prior comments. “We will continue to consider a joint venture on a Hi-Dry storage facility for the City Marina, extend efforts to establish a restaurant, and install a surrounding marina privacy fence to help dress up our city entrance; continuation of undergrounding of utilities on Gulf Boulevard; continue vital talks with the county for solution to John’s Pass sand channel issue, possible Village parking garage, Gulf Boulevard street signal at entrance to

Experience the Difference with

Breast Cancer Screening: More Than Mammograms

Ryan L. Baker, M.D.

by Ryan Baker, MD, FAAFP

Family Medicine

“The best physician-patient relationship is always based on shared decision making.”

Mammograms are the gold standard for breast cancer screening, and often a woman is starting her regular mammograms at a stage of life when she may not be seeing her gynecologist once a year. Ideally, your primary-care provider is already seeing you at least annually for a physical, so that’s a great opportunity to talk about breast health. Up to 15 percent of breast cancer cases are diagnosed when a patient themselves or their physician feels a palpable breast mass not detected on mammography. And 30 percent are diagnosed with a breast mass found during the interval between mammograms. If you’re not comfortable doing the physical exam portion of a breast health screening, that’s an opportunity for your primary-care provider to refer you to someone you are comfortable with. I’m not offended at all to make a referral. I don’t want patients to not do it or not talk about it because they’re not comfortable. I always put the decision-making power in the patient’s hands to talk about it as little or as much as they want to. When it comes to breast self-exams, the best recommendation is for you to have a conversation with your primary-care provider about how often to do it and what to look for. If you do feel or notice a concerning change in your breast, discuss it with your physician. Most breast lumps are caused by other non-cancerous medical conditions. While a lump or palpable mass in your breast or armpit is cause for further examination and possibly testing, it’s not the only thing to look for. Other possible signs of breast cancer can include: • A change in your breast shape or size • Nipple changes or discharge • Skin changes, including redness, inflammation, or dimpling like the skin of an orange Cancer isn’t the only thing that can cause changes in a woman’s breast. Menstrual cycles, having children, losing or gaining weight, menopause, and taking certain medications can affect how your breasts look and feel. Breasts also tend to change as you age. It’s important to note that breast changes are very common, and most are not cancer. Early breast cancer detection is the key to a better outcome. I recommend having an honest conversation about it every year with your primary-care physician. The best physician-patient relationship is one based on shared decision making. BODY – FUNKY FITNESS IDEAS: Fall into autumn with a new fitness challenge beyond biking, walking, yoga and Pilates. Cardio drumming is all the rage for both men and women at local rec centers (St. Pete Beach, Madeira, Oldsmar), The Y, SoulFit and other gyms. Melt calories and be one with the rhythm of the music. Drumming is not just fun, it can actually be a moderate to intense workout. A person who weighs 185 pounds (about 84kg) will burn about 250 calories per hour of drumming. It can also elevate your heart rate to high levels with enough intensity. If you like Zumba, you’ll love Hula Hoop exercising. Hula hooping is a safe and fun way to burn calories and body fat, improve your balance, strengthen your core muscles, and boost your cardiovascular fitness. And the best part? It’s inexpensive and easy to start, and you can do it anywhere. It’s an amazing low impact work-out. Enjoy free hula hoop dance class every first Sunday of the month at St. Pete’s Cage Brewing; dance hoops provided and no experience necessary. Spin into wellness and fun in Breezi’s hoop dance classes. Learn supreme hoop dance and trick content for beginners to advanced spinners while receiving a total body workout. "I can walk barefoot on the beach again." Local acupuncture clinic is treating the untreatable peripheral neuropathy with incredible results. Pain comes in many shapes and sizes. One of the most debilitating being the burning and tingling that comes with peripheral neuropathy. A disease that comes with years of shooting, stabbing pain that gradually ends in numbness, balance problems and on occasion, amputations. A disease that was once classified as irreparable. Jan Z. of St. Pete was facing such a fate. “I stopped golfing. I wasn’t taking walks on the beach with my husband. I was living on gabapentin and antidepressants and everywhere I went; my doctor, the specialists, the pain institute, told me there was no cure. How are you supposed to live your life knowing that everyday brings pain and suffering?” Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves, commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet. This causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. Most peripheral neuropathy sufferers experience a heightened sensitivity to touch making it almost impossible for those diagnosed to even wear shoes, much less enjoy life. That is until she found Dr. Rebecca Gibbons of Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine here in St. Petersburg, FL.

Dr. Gibbons and her staff have pioneered a cutting edge, medical solution to treat neuropathy, eliminate or greatly reduce its symptoms and give people their lives back. They’re doing it without the use of prescription medications and invasive surgeries. “Acupuncture is incredible at restoring blood flow and stimulating damaged nerves preventing them from dying off,” tells Dr. Gibbons. “We take our treatments a step further by integrating ATP Resonance BioTherapy™ which targets specific nerves in the body using microcurrent. ATP therapy is like watering a plant. This treatment will stimulate the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair.” The number of treatments needed to allow the nerves to fully recover will vary from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained more than 85% nerve damage Achieve Acupuncture offers hope where there once was none. Three months later Jan Z. is thrilled with her progress, “I can walk barefoot on the beach again!”

Coast Brothers’ Delish Keto Pumpkin Pie For a boo-tiful holiday dessert that’s low in carbs, why not whip up this easy Keto Pumpkin Pie for Halloween or Thanksgiving? The pumpkin is a symbol of harvest time, but we like it all year round. The fall season is all about pumpkin spice, from java to desserts. If you are on the keto diet, can you partake? The good news is, yes! Pumpkin can be keto-friendly without sacrificing flavor. Pumpkin boasts extra vitamins, minerals and fiber, and this easy keto pumpkin pie recipe is low on sugar. Early American settlers of New England’s Plymouth Colony may have made pumpkin pies, of sorts, without crusts. They stewed pumpkins or filled a hollowed out pumpkin shell with milk, honey, and spices, and then baked it in hot ashes. This almond flour crust is rich in vitamin E and other antioxidants and is an excellent source of manganese, magnesium, copper, calcium, and iron. EASY KETO PUMPKIN PIE WITH ALMOND FLOUR CRUST Pie Crust Ingredients 1 1/2 c. almond flour

3 tbsp. coconut flour 1/4 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. kosher salt 4 tbsp. butter, melted 1 large egg, beaten Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350°. 2. In a large bowl, whisk together almond flour, coconut flour, baking powder, and salt. 3. Add melted butter and egg and stir until a dough forms. 4. Press dough evenly into a 9” pie plate, then use a fork to poke holes all over crust. 5. Bake until lightly golden, 10 minutes.

Pumpkin Filling Ingredients 1 (15-oz.) can pumpkin puree 1 c. heavy cream (or coconut cream) 1/2 c. packed keto-friendly brown sugar 3 large eggs, beaten 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/4 tsp. ground cloves 1/4 tsp. kosher salt 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract Whipped cream, for serving (optional)

Make The Pie 1. In a large bowl, whisk together pumpkin, cream, brown sugar, eggs, spices, and vanilla until smooth. 2. Pour pumpkin mixture into lightly baked crust. 3. Bake at 350 degrees until filling is slightly jiggly in the middle and crust is golden, 45 to 50 minutes. 4. Turn off oven and prop door open. Let pie cool in oven for 1 hour, then refrigerate until ready to serve. 5. Serve with whipped cream, if desired. PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

Love Is Not Enough partner is not to blame for your past mistakes, only their own. But to fail to plan for the needs of both parties is a mistake.

People today have the freedom to live their lives in many different ways. Some make the choice to forego getting married, even though they are in committed relationships, which they intend to honor. Perhaps, having felt the great pain of going through a divorce, they don’t want to ever again, and for good reason. Almost everyone who’s been divorced felt like they were “screwed to the wall.” Also, the emotional trauma of all those broken dreams is more than people think they can endure again. But life is about learning and growing. Part of that growth needs to be learning to heal, but even more, learning not to make the mistakes

that led to that pain and suffering in the first place. Sincere people of good conscience can put personal trauma aside and learn to trust again. We’re older, we’re wiser, and we’re less likely to choose the wrong person again. Hopefully, we’re a lot less likely to contribute to the destruction of our relationships, as when we were younger. Getting stuck in the past is a disability, which we all need to overcome. Meeting later in life, each partner perhaps having had a previous family, there are plenty of forces that would discourage us from conquering our fears. But happiness, as well as a simple sense of fairness, requires that we do. Your new

The unmarried partner can be put at a huge disadvantage as changes in life come. That person you love (and actually do trust) might not have their name on your shared home. If you don’t have proper documents, medical professionals might not be able to talk to them when it counts the most. The person who may have the best insight into the choices you would make might be locked out of the process. And your children, who might never accept someone new taking the place of their natural parent, cannot be expected to automatically respect your new partner as you do. What would happen to your partner if you should die tomorrow? Would he or she be homeless? Many are. Would they be without sufficient funds to meet everyday expenses? Most are! Would they even have use of the car you might have shared? Simply put, can you live with the thought that your lack of planning contributed to their ultimate demise? CASTLES MADE OF SAND (SANS JIMI HENDRIX) All it takes is a pile of sand, some buckets of water, and lots of imagination to build a masterpiece – at least for the master sculptors who return to Treasure Island for Sanding Ovations. Enjoy their sculpting talent at Sandlantis, a Sand Sculpting Exhibition and Competition, Nov. 18-21. There’ll be plenty of room to spread out at the beach food court, beer garden, and arts and crafts marketplace. Fireworks Saturday evening at 10pm! MEANWHILE ELSEWHERE: Conservation workers have embarked on a new round of work at the famous Stonehenge site in southern England. The stones have cracked and fallen over several times in modern history, according to one report. And, at the turn of the 20th century, a strong winter storm caused one of the monument’s horizontal lintels to crash to the ground. TAKE ME OUT TO THE There’s something special about baseball in Tampa. It started with a little boy dreaming of playing baseball. This boy, Al Lopez, became Tampa’s first major league

The Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement (MAACM) is the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to the American Arts and Crafts movement. The five-story, 137,000 square-foot museum is a work of art itself, with a grand atrium, skylights, and a dramatic spiral staircase – all adorned with period art, light fixtures, windows, fireplaces, and more. CAMILLE TRUST, SINGER/ SONGWRITER In late September, Tampa native and celebrated singersongwriter Camille Trust released her debut full-length album, “ NY to FL,” and performed Sept. 24 at Floridian Social Club. The album is available on all streaming platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify. During the pandemic, Camille lived at home with her family, pivoting to find new ways to create her music. The songs on this album were written and produced over Zoom with her NYC producers. While home in Florida, she assembled a large local creative team – including director, photographer, wardrobe designer, hair & makeup artists – to produce music videos for this project. Her music video “Florida” features the lush landscapes of Odessa, St. Petersburg and Lutz, where she grew up. Trust says that this album is “a narrative of the times leaving a city I loved to move back home to a place I left many years ago. I am excited to share my story of transition, love

To know Camille is to love her soul-baring, unapologetic music. The NYC-based singer/ songwriter released her debut EP “No Other Way” in May 2018 and has quickly established herself as a strong female force in the music scene, garnering praise from the likes of Billboard, Nylon, DuJour, Popdust. Camille is also a proud member of the Resistance Revival Chorus, performing and recording alongside Jim James, Kesha, Carly Simon, Phillip Glass, Ani Difranco, and receiving recognition from eminent artists like Shawn Mendes. As of recently, she has done backup vocals for Mendes and Nathaniel Rateliff on Saturday Night Live as well as the MTV Video Music Awards. With an intoxicating blend of 60’s Soul, 70’s fun, and contemporary Pop, Camille has a sound that is both nostalgic and avant-garde. AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

FLORIDA HISTORY: On Oct. 26, Jason Vuic will speak at Tombolo Books about his riveting look into The Swamp Peddlers: How Lot Sellers, Land Scammers and Retirees Built Modern Florida and Transformed the American Dream. Florida has long been a beacon for retirees, but for many, the American dream of owning a home there was a fantasy. That changed in the 1950s. In The Swamp Peddlers, Jason Vuic tells the raucous tale of the sale of residential lots in postwar Florida. Vuic will be in Tombolo’s courtyard with Craig Pittman to discuss the people who “completely transformed the landscape and demographics of Florida.” “The Swamp Peddlers brings to life an astonishing rogues gallery of crooks and hustlers, each one of them a Florida Man seemingly sprung from the pages of a Carl Hiaasen thriller,” says Craig Pittman, author of Cat Tale: The Wild, Weird Battle to Save the Florida Panther. UNDER THE BIG TOP: On Oct. 20th from 3-4pm local author Deb Carson and PN contributor will talk about her new book at the St. Pete Beach Public Library. Becoming FLO, A Mostly True Story is the inspiring, real-life story of one of Ringling’s most famous clowns. Albert White was a sixteen-year-old Orthodox Jewish boy who fled from his abusive, homophobic Baltimore home in 1920, joined the circus, found fame, and her true self as a performer named Flo who appeared in movies, on stage and who, until 40 years after her death, was known to her family, including Carson, as Uncle Albert. Here’s what people are saying about the book: Gerald Notaro, USFSP Emeritus Librarian: “FLO is a work of love and a revelation of untold Queer history. These are stories too often lost when those who lived in less tolerant times pass on. Carson has woven her own indelible family history and memories with meticulous research to create a compelling and engaging story that meshes the fabulous cultures of circus, fashion, travel, LGBTQ survival, Florida and even immigration. It is going to make a great film someday.” Gary Mormino, author and historian: “Deb Carson has written a great American story. Only in America could Abraham, the son of Orthodox Jewish immigrants, change his name to Albert White, question his sexuality, live life on her own terms, join Ringling’s Greatest Show on Earth! and achieve fame as Flo, a beloved circus clown. Carson takes readers from the Russian shtetl under the Czar’s thumb to under the big top of circuses around the world, and to colorful places such as Sarasota’s ‘Turquoise Temple,’ La Tosca Trailer Park.”

EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN RETROCHIC: Grand Millennial Style is this fall’s hottest design

trend. Young adults are returning to vintage styles, embracing traditional designs and mixing them with modern looks. Hot right now are wicker and rattan pieces, skirted and bow bedecked furnishings (tables, beds, vanities), china and china cabinets, classic floral/chintz wallpaper and upholstery and setting a nice table for entertaining. “Grand millennial style is a generational rebellion against the sleek minimalism of midcentury modern design,” says Rebecca Breslin, senior design manager for Wayfair Professional. It’s also a fashion “thing,” from vintage crochet sweaters to eyeglass chains. Expect to see this and eco-design styles flourish, from sustainable materials for clothes and bedding (bamboo, cotton) such as those we found at downtown’s trufulla eco boutique and Belleair’s Illume Apparel.

THRIFTING & GENTLY USED: The resale revolution

is here, and it’s not just about local consignment or resale shops such as Designer Consigner, Designer Exchange, CASA, Wendy’s Closet, Revolve Clothing Exchange, RETreat, Goodwill and other thrift boutiques. According to a recent ThredUp report, the secondhand market is expected to double to $77 billion by 2025. That big number, plus the low overhead of a peer-to-peer platform, is attractive. Retailers are hopping on the bandwagon as well. Retailers such as URBN (parent to Anthropologie, Free People, Urban Outfitters, BHLDN, and Terrain) invite their customers to sell used apparel on Nuuly Thrift, a peer-to-peer platform. While eBay and Amazon also offer gently used clothes to buy (or sell), this trend is good for the planet and trumps fast fashion, reducing our individual carbon footprint.

BORROW, NOT BUY: Your local library is full of treasures, and many offer more than books, audio and videos to borrow. Around the U.S., there are libraries that lend tools, ukuleles (https://pplc.us/ ukulele-program/) and sporting goods. Seed sharing programs are blossoming, especially local flowers, veggies and plants. One unique program pairs students and mentors, a sort of rent-an-expert. Locally, you can join book, Scrabble, mah jong and writing clubs, take tech classes or watch films. The Clearwater Public Library System’s Maker Studios offers hands-on learning and experimentation spaces where community members can design, prototype, and create works. Visit one of the 15 Pinellas County libraries or go here: https://pplc.us/ ParadiseNewsFL.com | OCTOBER 2021

By Nanette Wiser

From St. Pete’s Museum of Fine Arts to NYC high rise offices, the world’s abuzz about bees.

The arts museum boasts rooftop beehives and their own honey brand. And according to the New York Times, offices dangle beehives and garden plots to lure workers back from remote. In midtown Manhattan, one company devoted the 22nd floor terrace to two beehives and a garden. Bees have long been a part of fashion and lifestyle history. Consumers’ concern for the declining bee population and climate change has increased the popularity of our buzzy friends. Bee motif jewelry, bee-friendly products and skin care, local honey and bee-friendly pest control are all trending. Food as medicine advocates tout the benefits of organic honey for gut health, immune system boosts and other ailments. Some say when the bees go, we go. After all, 1/3 of our food source comes from bees pollinating plants. Scientists know that bees are dying from a variety of factors–pesticides, drought, habitat destruction, nutrition deficit, air pollution, global warming and more. There’s a lot you can do to help bees do their jobs. Plant bee friendly plants including Florida wildflowers (Spanish needle, yellow primrose and spiderwort), citrus and fruit trees, berries and trees like bottlebrush, powderpuff, crape myrtle or golden rain.

Bees like ground covers (Mexican clover and shrubby false buttonweed) and flowering plants such as purple porterweed, sweet almond, salvia, and bee balm. You can see many of these in the Florida Botanical Garden’s Butterfly Gardens. From downtown St. Pete to Gulf Beaches, explore local beekeepers’ sweet treats from Eden’s Nectar Honey, Tarpon Springs’ Bayshore Bees and Queen & Colony (Blush Tea). At Rolling Oats, we discovered A Bee’s Place LLC with hives in St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park, Seminole, Dunedin and Tierra Verde. An interview with their beekeeper explained how bees make different honey flavors: “All of our honey is all natural from the bees, the nectar that bees go out and gather is what they bring back, and that’s what flavors the honey. So even our spring, summer and fall honey from the same yard, will taste a little different because of the flowers that they’ve actually gone out and gotten the nectar from. To get a single source honey such as orange blossom or blackberry honey beekeepers move their bees to the fields so the bees can forage primarily on their blossoms which produce the lovely varieties. Honey from all different parts of the country is like fine wine, all have wonderful color and taste differences.” You can find many local honeys and bee products at St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market, Corey Avenue Sunday Market and other local markets that reopen in the fall including

Rebecca’s Bees & Honey (www.rebeccasbees.com). Enjoy her exquisite honey, lip balm, candles, deodorant, soaps and Propolis healing products from their three apiaries (St. Petersburg, Largo, Redington Shores). The mother-daughter team, Gail and Rebecca are proud of their operation. “Our bees pollinate millions of flowers within a 5-mile radius, connecting us intimately to the ecosystem we live in. We believe in working with the bees naturally and holistically. We manage bee diseases and pests without chemicals, and we don’t feed soy pollen substitute, corn syrup or sugar. We carefully harvest honey by hand and always leave our bees plenty for themselves.”

PET HEALTH The symptoms could range anywhere from vomiting and diarrhea to seizures and possibly death.

First of all we would like to say it is great to be able to share our knowledge and expertise with the Paradise News community to help improve the health of our local pets. Halloween is fast approaching with a number of different risks that could threaten the health and well-being of your pets. Here are a few more common things that we see around this time of year for you to be aware of to help keep your pet safe. • Chocolate candy - Chocolate is toxic to your pets. The amount and concentration of the cocoa (milk or dark) that your pet ingests will determine the severity of the toxicity.

• Sugar free candy - Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that is found most commonly in sugar free gum but can be found in candy and even sugar free peanut butter. Small amounts can be very toxic and cause symptoms such as low blood sugar, seizures, liver failure and death. Keep all candy in a safe place away from your pet’s reach and if ingested seek emergency veterinary expertise and care. • Toys and candy wrappers - Toys may be tempting for your pet to chew on and candy wrappers could be ingested along with the candy. If either are ingested, size shape and quantity could create a large enough object that could obstruct your pet’s stomach or intestine. Symptoms could include vomiting, diarrhea, straining to defecate, lethargy, inappetance, and more. Should you note any

By Dr. Jonathan Pierce of these symptoms seek emergency veterinary expertise and care. • Flight or fight risk - Opening the door to greet trick-or-treaters may present the opportunity for your pet to escape. It is also possible your pet may become territorial or scared of the costumed kids, eliciting an aggressive reaction. Your pet may be better off in a separate room or place a barrier such as a strong baby gate to prevent access to the front door during trick-or-treat hours. Be careful out there and have a Happy Halloween – from the veterinarians and staff of Island Life Animal Hospital! “Get Sirius About Your Future”

October 2021 Astrology A New Moon in relationship sign Libra on the 6th begins the lunar cycle this month with new energy highlighting partnerships and social activities. There is also a strong theme of transformation in personal and business relationships that need a new start. Clear out old patterns and you can have success going forward. Love planet Venus visits the adventurous sign of Sagittarius on the 7th when we become outgoing, pleasure-seeking, and freedom-loving! Spending can get out of hand, too, if we aren’t careful. Mercury moves direct on the 18th in Libra giving us clearer communication and the go-ahead for fall, winter, and holiday projects and planning. Saturn, planet of responsibility, position and corporations, moves direct on the 10th. Jupiter goes direct on the 18th when freedom, travel, and wealth are accented. These two planets affect big decisions on a global level and we can be sure to see a lot of things move forward in these areas now. The Full Hunters Moon on the 20th is in dynamic Aries and will bring the modifications that began two weeks ago to a peak! Letting go is a strong theme that will prepare us next for the rebuilding phase. The Sun brings vitality and strength to Scorpio the sign of metamorphosis on the 23rd that will assist in our undertakings. Then on the 30th action and energy planet Mars enters Scorpio, lending its much-needed courage and assertiveness.

LIBRA: Your new year begins now Libra! Action, activity, and learning assist with changes you want to make. The full moon highlights partners in personal and biz situations questioning their direction going forward.

ARIES: New beginnings in personal and business relationships come from reconnecting. Travel can be enjoyed with or without company. You are in the Full Moon spotlight and in charge of bringing balance with partnerships.

SCORPIO: New plans are made in private and conversations are also kept in confidence. Your income area is supported. The spotlight will fall on health concerns and work or duties as information comes to light now.

TAURUS: You may start a new job or return to work ready for a new start. Income and resources are enhanced. Revise health and wellness routine; both physical and mental. Information revealed requires action; resolution.

SAGITTARIUS: Your social calendar fills quickly and time with friends both old and new is highlighted as you are favored and popular this month. The Full Moon spotlight falls on love, romance, creativity, and time with children.

GEMINI: Reconnecting to a lost love may bring a new beginning. Others are agreeable now. Enjoy recreation and hobbies. The spotlight will accent social life and friendships with action-oriented transformative influences.

CAPRICORN: New beginnings in status or career are likely and profitable. You enjoy private time with or without someone special. Later, the Full Moon focus falls on home life and family matters as revelations take place.

CANCER: Homelife is the hub of activity with new beginnings and many projects. Health improves and work becomes more pleasant. Career or position is highlighted when Full Moon energy peaks, bringing closures.

AQUARIUS: New plans include travel to either an old favorite place or fresh destination. You will likely include friends or go with a group. Learning and conversations both will be revealing and motivating for change now.

LEO: Daily life is action-packed with communication and short trips. Love life, recreation, and hobbies are enjoyable. Modify health plans and purge old habits. The spotlight falls on your beliefs, education, and travel.

PISCES: Resources and financial support from others get a new start; as options are reconsidered. You are favored by superiors this month. The Full Moon focuses on personal values that assist in transformative change.

VIRGO: New energy fills income and financial areas and you revise your current plan. Family members are pleasant and time at home enjoyed. The Full Moon’s energy has you letting go of old patterns in all areas of life.

ENCOURAGING WORDS Pay Close

By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones

Attention

To Your

Intention

“Each intention—anger, greed, compassion, understanding—sets energy into motion... What you intend is what you become...Power is energy that is formed by the intentions of the soul. It is light shaped by the intentions of love and compassion guided by wisdom. It is energy that is focused and directed toward the fulfillment of the tasks of the soul upon the Earth.” ~ Gary Zukav, The Seat of the Soul

If you were to think of your life as a

journey, how happy, how fulfilled, how peaceful would you be at this point in your life? Is it possible that, as my friend Gary Zukav infers, our intentions shape our experiences, which, at the end of the day, comprise the sum of our time spent on the planet? Is it really plausible that what we intend we become? Opening our mind to this question has profound implications because it beckons us to consider how conscious (or not) our intentions for the life we are living have been. Courageously exploring this question enables us to see that we play a crucial part in determining where the journey of our life will take us in the future. Irrespective of the current state of our life, we can meet the new day with immense optimism by embracing the fact that our future is shaped by our deepest, consciously made intentions. Too often, in the busyness of our lives, our intentions are semi-unconscious, meaning they slip unnoticed directly through to the reactive habit-mind, circumventing the deeper contemplative self. As a result, we may make choices which spawn consequences we may not expect.

OCTOBER 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

There is a direct correlation between the choices we make and our intentions. Every choice we make announces our intention to the Universe about what we desire and puts energy in motion to make it so. The root word for intention is intent, which means, “An aspiration to do something on purpose with an objective goal or target in mind; by design.” Whether we are aware of it, we each live by intention. While many of us believe otherwise, our intentions, whether our highest or our basest, conscious or unconscious, are always being served. If we find our lives to be “off course” it is only through becoming consciously “self-aware” that we can challenge and change the compass coordinates set for our journey. How conscious are the choices you have been making? Are they propelled by the light, wisdom and energy of love and compassion, or something of a lower, more base vibration where the ego quietly lingers in the shadows–such as fear and doubt? Are your intentions arising from the infinite depths of your soul, or the shallows of a reactive mind operating just under the radar of the fully aware self? It’s easy to discern. Just witness your feeling nature as you ask yourself these questions and you’ll know from where your intentions arise:

Are my daily choices driven by unconscious habits, fears, doubts, and insecurities, or love and trust? Do my choices incorporate harmony, sharing, cooperation, and reverence for life? Do my choices create authentic power within, or do they cause me to look to other people and external things for my power, purpose, and direction? Do my choices include intentions that honor my body, my relationships, my world, and my soul? THE TAKE AWAY: You really are on a journey of a lifetime. Mindfully pay attention to your intentions is the rule of the road. Know that where your life heads now is not predestined by where it has been. You are at choice. Take time to plumb the depths of your innermost being and listen carefully to the wisdom and guidance, for what you intend today is what you shall become tomorrow. May your journey be a sacred one, where the intentions of your deepest Self rise and commingle with your daily doing, serving as the compass that points the way to the life you truly deserve.
