From the Publishers Welcome to the August-September edition of Pinellas’ favorite community news magazine, published and distributed monthly from October to May and bi-monthly twice each summer. Paradise News supports arts, culture and entertainment and we’re thrilled to have Zubrick Magic Theatre on our cover this issue. We hope you will support our arts coverage by voting for us in the St. Petersburg Good Burger awards Sept. 5-Oct. 10 at www.paradisenewsfl.com/good-burger. When Paradise NEWS began in December of 1995, a goal was set to make each issue better than the prior one. Looking over the almost complete August-September edition, even we are impressed with how far we have come from those early years. We have an incredibly talented team that work independently to produce their contributions to each next edition. We also have a wonderful, growing, loyal group of advertisers who should get most of the credit for collectively bringing you the Paradise News everyone loves to read. Many Paradise NEWS readers have decided to sell their homes and downsize to a nearby retirement community, or somewhere away from the beaches. In June, we introduced Sandy Bartow, a realtor with Sotheby’s who has assembled a team to help smooth that transition. Sandy’s correct phone number is 678-859-3922. Aging with dignity is a big issue these days and in this issue on page 26, we introduce you to services designed to help with that, including visiting and live-in companion services.

PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

Good Deed, Bad Deed Over the more than 12 years that I’ve been writing this column, I have offered up numerous reasons that a non-lawyer should not write and/or execute his or her own deed. Examples include the fact that adding someone not presently on the title is interpreted as an irrevocable gift of a portion of the value of the property. Too bad if you decide later it wasn’t a good idea. You can’t take their name off the title without their signature. Inheritability of title between co-owners is also an issue, that is, joint tenancy versus tenancy in common. It is not easy to know what is best, or how to draft language that will guarantee that it works the way you want, in THIS state. Drafting issues also apply to the operative language of a deed. It is always possible that the deed itself may fail, because of a poor choice of words, or mistakes in execution or delivery. Many other issues pop up. Suppose you own a piece of property, which you plan to

leave to your children. Perhaps you put it in your will, or maybe you created a joint tenancy with the right of survivorship. Then one day, based on reading you’ve done about life estates, Lady Bird deeds, or some other novel idea, you decide that you’d rather not make your kids wait for you to pass away, or go through probate. Based on your reading, you’re convinced you know how to write it, so you do. Do you realize that you may have just cost those kids you were going to leave the property to a big capital gains tax bill, should they decide one day to sell the property? The issue is the difference between “carryover” basis and “stepped-up” basis. In your kids’ hands, the larger their basis in

the property, the less capital gains tax they will owe. Usually, a gift gives the receiver carryover basis (a low basis), meaning they will end up paying tax on the increases in property value over their time holding the property, plus the gains while you, the giver, held the property. If the property is inherited, or passes at death by joint tenancy, the receiver enjoys a stepped-up basis, that is, the (usually much higher) value of the property at the date of death. We recently saw a situation where careful plans to let their heirs inherit a valuable piece of real estate were accidentally tossed out the window by the impulsive decision to execute a deed. The difference in capital gains tax now, when the heirs need to sell the property, came to over $200,000. Not a small matter! The moral of the story? TALK TO A REAL ESTATE LAWYER! HOLISTIC HEALTH

By Camilla Nichols, M.S. food preservatives that may affect endocrine function.

Diet & Wellness Tips

You are what you eat, so it’s time to take control of your health by choosing your foods wisely.

Chemicals lurk everywhere. Choose wild-caught salmon instead of Atlantic farm-raised salmon. Baked goods may contain potassium bromate, which may cause kidney damage, cancer, and nervous system damage. Research has linked red dye 40, a synthetic food coloring, to many conditions.

Here are tips for taking control of your diet and health. Learn to read food labels. The first three ingredients should never be sugar, corn syrup, HFC or sucrose. Avoid foods with additives, dyes, chemicals, artificial ingredients, preservatives and bio-engineered or GMO foods.

Learn to read bar codes and PLUs. The first two or three numbers tell you what country it came from (690, 691, 692 = China; 50: UK, 30-37: France). PLU stickers: If the number starts with a 4 it’s conventionally grown; 9: organically grown; 8: genetically modified One day GMO foods will start with an 8. To avoid them, stick with 4s and 9s.

Avoid processed foods, often high in sugar, fats, sodium, and chemicals affecting organs, cell function and your immune system. They can be linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, metabolic syndrome, allergies, cancers, and asthma. Sodas and sports drinks contain brominated vegetable oil, originally patented as a flame retardant. Also avoid propylparaben, BHA and BHT

Use BPA-free plastic. Bisphenol-A (BPA) can leach into food and beverages. Research shows it binds to estrogen receptors and influences cell repair, reproduction, and other hormone function.

Many U.S. manufactured foods are banned in other countries because of health issues. U.S. beef, pork, and processed meats with hormones, ractopamine (pork), sodium nitrate, and other chemicals fed to animals may be linked to cancer. U.S. cheese and milk products as well as artificial sweeteners (aspartame, saccharine, sucralose) and trans fats which put you at risk for stroke and heart disease. So what can you do? Eat real food, drink water (not soda) and research what you eat. Learn to cook and eat at home, preparing in advance for the week. Avoid using the microwave to heat or cook. Know where your food comes from and support your local farmers markets. Book a Healthy Cooking Class, join me at The Centre for Nutrition Facts/Fiction (3rd Wednesday 5:30pm) or order a healthy meal from me. 727-534-1406 or info@simplethings.world.

LIVE LIFE BETTER By Nanette Wiser SMART GARDENS Self-watering pots and LED lights keep indoor herbs and flowers blooming. For a small space, Amazon offers the Click and Grow Garden 3 with space to grow three plant pods at a time or seedless pods to use with seeds you buy elsewhere. It’s great for basil, lettuce and other herbs and you don’t have to worry about watering every day. For microgreens, I like Ingarden; it uses autonomous watering complete with a ventilation system and wicking structure. Simply place the included pads onto the growing beds, pour water over them, hold the light timer at the top for three seconds, and get fresh microgreens about a week later. MOOD BOOSTERS Get healthy and happy in a flash. A cool water foot bath with Epsom salts can restore your vigor according to research. Even brief dips in skin temperature prompt your brain to release hormones that energize muscles and boost oxygen-rich blood flow to tissues and stimulate the brain. A little reflexology at Paradise Foot Spa works wonders as well. Garden gazing can also boost focus and alleviate brain fog as does playing your favorite song or escaping into a book to restore calm. And the best? Connecting with friends daily. Send a text or an inspiring image to elevate your and their mood. Walking the dog? Call your far-away pal for a quick check-in. For more ideas, check out Own Your Morning by Liz Baker Plosser. FIT & FUN Too hot to run or bike outside? Check out some indoor adventures. Through October 2022, NYC’s Rockefeller Center’s ice rink is Flipper’s Roller Boogie Palace, an homage to the ‘70s popular Los Angeles roller rink and retro blue suede skates with red wheels to rent. Why not roll into this fitness craze at Pinellas Park’s Astro Skate Family Fun Center? Wednesday 8:30-11pm is Adult Night and you can learn to skate on Sat. 9-10am. Or take up bowling. At Seminole Lanes, you can enjoy the game room, laser tag and the hip light show and tunes of Galactic bowling Thurs. 9:30pm and Fri./Sat. 9pm to close, a great date night excursion. On Wednesdays, ladies bowl free after 9:30pm. At Pasadena’s Ten Pin Lanes, seniors can bowl Mon. and Wed. 11am-5pm for just $2/game; there’s a snack bar.

Join USF in the Fight Against Alzheimer’s Disease The University of South Florida PACT (Preventing Alzheimer’s with Cognitive Training) study needs healthy volunteers to join the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. The study focuses on using computerized brain training exercises with the hope to reduce dementia risk. If you or a loved one are interested in more info, please visit the PACT study website, pactstudy.org, or call 727-873-4090. The USF PACT team is looking for 3,000 healthy volunteers to combat the growing incidence of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease. PACT is currently enrolling adults aged 65 and older with no signs of cognitive impairment, dementia, or neurological disorders. Once accepted into the study, participants will begin their exercises at a PACT location such as Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota, Lakeland or Winter Haven. “We are very grateful to the 1,800 volunteers from Tampa Bay who have already joined our fight against Alzheimer’s disease by enrolling in PACT,” said principal investigator Jerri Edwards, PhD, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.

Long COVID Symptoms? We Can Help! YOU CAN FEEL BETTER

Without Taking DRUGS

If there was a way to

prevent Alzheimer’s disease, would you try it?

Past research shows that computerized training can help maintain mental and physical function. Healthy older adults who were prescribed 10 sessions of such training had a 29% lower risk of dementia after 10 years. Those completing additional training benefited even more: they were 48% less likely to show signs of dementia 10 years later. Alzheimer’s disease affects an estimated 6.2 million Americans, including 1 in 9 people aged 65 and older, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. This number is projected to nearly triple to 14 million by 2060. African Americans and Hispanics are especially encouraged to enroll in PACT, as they are nearly twice as likely to suffer from dementia. As of today, there are no proven cures or treatments that stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia. The few medications currently on the market only provide short-term management of symptoms for those who already have dementia. This is why studies like PACT are so important. For those currently enrolled in the study, the entire PACT team appreciates your contribution to science and your efforts in fighting Alzheimer’s disease.

"SHE GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK"

Local clinic has a medical solution for peripheral neuropathy. “It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down anticipating the yellow light. I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them but I couldn’t. I couldn’t feel my foot. The car kept moving forward and I just couldn’t get my foot on the brake. And CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the car in front of me.” This story was shared with us by John, a Tampa Bay area resident who has peripheral neuropathy. While no one was hurt in this accident, John had suffered almost everyday of his life with tingling and burning in his feet until numbness set it and he could no longer feel even the brake pedal beneath his foot. “Typically, the first stage is pain.” shares Dr. Rebecca Gibbons of AAIM| Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine. “You feel burning, tingling, sharp pains, or you feel like you’re walking on tacks or marbles. This pain eventually subsides and the numbness sets in. Unfortunately the numbness brings with it a whole other host of problems. We see people have to become reliant on their spouse or family, which is really difficult for both."

It is terribly common that peripheral neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms interfere with a person’s ability to live their life. John was now reliant on his wife to drive him around, What is even more common, John's general practitioner and several specialists told him there was nothing they could do other than prescribe him pills that would ease the pain of his neuropathy. That’s where Dr. Gibbons and her staff at AAIM come in. “About 75% of our current patients come to us suffering from the same condition as John,” tells Dr. Gibbons. "They’re in constant pain from neuropathy and it prevents them from not only living their lives but more importantly, it prevents them from enjoying it. Depending on the severity of their nerve damage, we typically see tremendous progress in 3-4 months of treatment. I like to say we’re in the business of making your golden years golden." "I can't lie," admits John "I was skeptical at first but I had run out of options. Nothing else was helping but after about four months into treatment, I was confidently able to drive myself to Publix and to my appointments. Dr. Gibbons gave me my life back." You can learn more about Dr. Gibbons and AAIM by visiting WWW.ACHIEVEACUIM.com. If you’re ready to schedule a consultation call (727) 272-3587.

CBD & WELLNESS By Margo Gilliland

ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS ALL CDC GUIDELINES FOLLOWED, PLUS SOCIAL DISTANCING

Using CBD To Reduce Anxiety? One of the most studied and scientifically supported benefits of CBD is its ability to help us deal with stress and anxiety! Without clear FDA guidance, optimal CBD use for anxiety varies from person to person. Our systems process CBD differently. You may find one method works better for you over another. CBD is available in the following forms: Oils and Tinctures: which come in dropper bottles and are consumed by mouth Gummies: which are chewable, sweet, often fruit flavored Capsules: soft gels or tablets, taken individually by mouth like a pill Vapes: which heat CBD oil without igniting it, resulting in an inhalable vapor Flower: dried hemp plants that are typically ignited and smoked Creams and Gels: introduce CBD topically (through the skin) as a more localized treatment You may have to try different forms to determine what works best in addressing your anxiety. Some methods provide relief immediately while other methods take longer to feel the effects. The World Health Organization deems CBD a safe and generally well-tolerated substance. However, if you are taking other medications you may want to check with your doctor. We also have dog treats with high quality CBD that are helpful if these afternoon thunderstorms are bothering your pup! I just had a friend buy some of the treats for her pups who were so scared by the thunder. She said it is like a miracle for them. You can buy CBD just about anywhere now, but not all CBD is equal, and neither is the labeling. My commitment to my customers is always to provide a safe, clean product and education. I am committed to providing organic, high-quality, and third-party lab-tested products for my clients. I help customers with combining solid cannabis science and my own lived experience. HEALTH & WELLNESS

By Nanette Wiser home or in their caregiver’s home. In preparing for your aging parent and bringing in a caregiver, you may need to make some home modifications. Here are some tips for choosing a caregiver. Learn more www.aarp.org/caregiving/home-care. Assess what your parent needs. Is it home health care (physical therapy, medication management), personal care (bathing, dressing, bathroom, meal prep), house cleaning/maintenance, errands, driving or a companion for activities? It’s best to keep the bill paying and money management with a trusted family member who has the parent’s POA. Write a job description that includes days and hours, level of health care training (HNA, CNA, Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse), ability to lift or operate special equipment and a list of duties that also includes unacceptable behaviors (smoking, tardiness, rudeness) and wages.

For most seniors, continuing to live in their home for as long as

possible can be a struggle. Sometimes, a family member or friend isn’t available or needs respite in caregiving. Shared housing and assisted living are one option, but finding a good caregiver, visiting nurse or agency to help with independent living at home may be the answer. Many seniors and their families see the benefits of hiring a caregiver who can help them stay safely and comfortably in their homes. According to AARP’s “Home and Community Preferences” survey, 3 out of 4 adults 50+ want to stay in their homes and communities as they age. And many do live in their own home, in someone else’s

Ask doctors, colleagues, friends, pastors and neighbors for an agency referral or prospective caregiver. Research the agency or individual, ask for references and get a criminal background check. Prepare a list of questions and ask a friend or another family member to sit in on the interview. Be sure the person has experience with your parent’s issues, such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. Once you’ve identified the right person, involve your parent in the final decision to make sure it’s a good fit for them. Look for someone experienced, patient, compassionate, attentive, dependable, trustworthy and a good communicator. And only hire a licensed, bonded caregiver. Once you’ve decided, you’ll prepare an action care plan with the agency or caregiver that details all duties to be performed, set the wages and payment schedule and sign a contract. It’s important to monitor the caregiver’s services by calling/texting or making regular home visits. You can also hire an independent geriatric care manager to do this for you. Be sure to have a back-up plan if your caregiver doesn’t work out.

HANGING AROUND Summertime, when everyone’s fancy lightly turns to … ice cream!

Despite our doctor’s cholesterol cautions, My Darling and I cannot resist the temptation. Recently we embarked on an extensive taste test, and are pleased to report every contestant is a winner. Downtown Gulfport’s Let It Be Ice Cream is tiny but mighty. It serves up a limited selection of small-batch ice cream, so what’s on the menu is always a surprise. When Darling and I braved the bugs to stroll in one evening two of my favorites – Pistachio and Coffee Crunch – were available. While I ordered a two-flavor single scoop, Darling went for a colorful Blueberry/Strawberry combo. While he enjoyed the fresh-fruit flavors, he admitted he wished he had chosen one of the chocolate options. On another buggy evening we ventured to Treasure Island for some sunset action and wound up at Ice & Cream Creamery. This local chain began in Clearwater and now boasts six venues up and down the Pinellas beach communities. The waiting line was long and varied, ranging from walker-pushing seniors to tattooed bodybuilders to small children insisting they wanted to try Smurf. I went for tried-and-true Premium Coffee, while Darling’s chocolate choice was the daring Mexican Hot Chocolate.

By Caron Schwartz

While mine was predictably wonderful, Darling said the cayenne and cinnamon made for a memorable treat. Meanwhile, we got a good laugh watching kids marching around with Smurf-blue faces. Larry’s Ice Cream and Gelato was the first local ice cream shop I was introduced to when I moved to Pinellas, so I was eager to take Darling to the locals’ favorite. The sky was dark and threatening when we arrived. Despite the weather, the place was mobbed, mostly with groups of teenagers and young families. When we finally got to the counter, Darling beat me to the punch by ordering a shareable double scoop of two flavors he knew I’d like – Kahlua Almond Fudge and Cappuccino Chip. The ice creams were both rich and coffeelicious, but the pièce de résistance was the homemade waffle cone – an amazing combination of crunchy and chewy, sweet and savory. By the time we left, smiling and sated, the line streamed across the parking lot even as the raindrops began to fall.

By Nanette Wiser

Wouldn’t it be nice to wave a magic wand, say“abracadabra,”

and open your eyes to the perfect family vacation in Florida? That kind of sorcery is near impossible at many crowded tourist attractions, but Zubrick Magic Theatre in downtown St. Pete is perfect for visitors, a date night, families, and business events.

“We give our patrons an experience they won’t soon forget,” says Ryan.“The 70-minute performance is immersive and interactive. From video mapping and projection technology to audience participation, the theatre comes to life. But the real magic are the wonderful and lasting memories families and friends create together.”

Chris and Ryan Zubrick, award-winning illusionists who have wowed crowds in more than 7,500 performances across the globe, have created a world-class stage for their Vegas-style performance at the state-of-the-art Zubrick Magic Theatre. The popular performances sell out quickly, with repeat patrons curious to see what new illusion the Zubricks have added.

The intimate theater seats no more than 90 people so everyone is close to the non-stop action.“You don’t just sit and watch the show, but you become involved in the magic that happens all around you,” says Chris.“And it’s always fun to see someone from your group get pulled up on stage to participate!”

Magic is universal, transcending age and culture. It’s impossible to peel your eyes away from the trick’s big reveal. You’ll smile at the “Oooooooo, wow” you hear from adults and children, followed by,“How did they do that?” The Zubricks blend the old with the new, mixing magic and technology to create a one-of-a-kind immersive experience. Witness classics of magic along with new, cutting-edge grand illusion. Their expansive repertoire and rotating acts keep the show feeling fresh for those who attend time and again. 34

Million Dollar Quartet Dec. 4 1956 at Sun Studio - Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash Life size Elvis welcome to Graceland Mansion & Museum

Cruising the Mississippi from Memphis to New Orleans on a paddle wheeler Story by STEVE TRAIMAN Photos by Bonnie & Steve Traiman

Cruising the lower Mississippi River on an authentic

paddle wheeler has long been on our bucket list. In the post-pandemic, we finally made it from July 11 to 22. Flying from Tampa to Memphis, we spent two days in Memphis, staying at the Graceland Guest House and touring Elvis Presley’s Graceland Mansion. That first night we were picked up by a pink ’58 Cadillac limo to famous Marlowe’s Ribs for the best barbecue in Memphis, with photos of Elvis all around and some veteran waitstaff who knew him personally. During my Billboard writing years from 1974-80 I made my first trip to Memphis to interview Elvis. I never met a more generous, down-to-earth guy who was a gracious host. The Mansion, which he bought in 1966, has been fully restored with his original furnishings and memorabilia and is a delight to tour. From the grand entrance living room with his grand piano, through the kitchen where he would go at night for his favorite peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, to the billiard room with its stunning chandelier and pleated fabric ceiling and walls, and the jungle room with his safari memorabilia, it’s a great tour. The saddest reminder was my contribution to his obituary a few years later in August 1977 when heart disease took his all-too-short life at 42. The next day (12) we took the city bus tour that went past the extensive St. Jude medical complex and visited the 36

still-operating Sun Studios. It was where owner Sam Phillips discovered Elvis in the early 1950’s and gave him his first break. It was a habit that whoever was in the studio any day would be part of a recording session. It was Dec. 4, 1956, when the later-named “Million-Dollar Quartet” recorded a historic album–Elvis with Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash!

Aboard the Ship The next morning (13) we boarded the American Cruise Lines’ American Splendor paddle-wheeler. With five decks and a capacity of 185 passengers, we only had 121 on this trip. Each spacious stateroom had a balcony, where we enjoyed breakfast. We got a nice rundown about the ship from Engineer Telly Harper. He told us the ship, built in 2016 and renovated earlier this year, is 333 feet long and 53 feet wide with an 8-ft. draft and top speed of 15 mph. It’s powered by two 1750-HP Cat diesel engines, two marine azimuth thrusters, and two bow thrusters. The paddle wheel is just for show, as it turns but has no propulsion! The Mississippi was down 30 to 50 feet so that most landings had steep climbs to the road, with an assist from golf carts for passengers. The crew headed by Capt. Robert Harrigan, a former Coast Guard officer, included hotel general manager Xander Westwood, cruise director Fernando Duran,

guest speaker/historian Jim Schweickart, excursion director Rick Tyson, restaurant manager Kay Smith, and executive chef Angel Mendez.

Entrance to historic Memphis’ Sun Studio

Nightly entertainment was outstanding. Piano virtuoso Jon England can’t read a note but played every song by ear! Historian Jim Schweickart had an interesting bit of knowledge in every port. Guest entertainers included black humorist Judy Davis from New Orleans who gave us non-stop laughs with her witty bon-mots. Husband-wife team Michael & Jennifer McClain as the Banjocats gave us music with a bluegrass kick. Final night brought in trumpet legend Wendell Brunious and renowned jazz clarinetist Carolyn Fromell for a trip to New Orleans jazz greats’ music.

Vicksburg We traveled on three American Cruise Lines buses that were with us from Memphis to New Orleans, with the local tour guides very knowledgeable about every city. The working Whitney cotton gin at Frogmore Plantation

Battle diorama at Vicksburg Civil War Museum

Our first stop was Vicksburg on Thursday (14) where a turning-point Civil War battle was fought. The Vicksburg Civil War Museum gave equal space to both North and South, with a great diorama depicting the battle. Also noted were portraits of two female spies – one Union, one Confederate. We then stopped at the nearby Coca-Cola Museum where the first Coca Cola was bottled in 1894! Exhibited were a lot of Coke memorabilia including trays and other knick-knacks. On Friday (15) we had a memorable trip to the Vicksburg National Military Park, operated by the National Park Service. More than 63,000 Confederate and Union soldiers are buried in the park, with appropriate ceremonies for each during the year. There is a replica 0f the USS Cairo, the first ironclad gunboat sunk by Confederate forces at Vicksburg.

Natchez

Marlowe’s 1958 pink Cadillac limo picked us up for dinner

Next stop was Natchez on Saturday (16) with an eye-opening “Cotton & Music” tour to the Tanner Frogmore Plantation and Cotton Gin in nearby Ferriday, La. Owner Lynette Tanner gave us a great tour of the property, starting with a working model of the first cotton gin, patented by Eli Whitney in 1853. When the new electric gins are down, it still can separate cotton seeds from cotton bolls before the cotton is packed into average 490-pound bales for shipping. Lynette is the fifth generation of the family that has operated the plantation over the past 50 years, and it still turns a nice profit every year. She gave us a tour, with a stop to hear some lovely gospel ballads by a local schoolteacher, who provided a lovely interlude on our visit.

Audubon photos for his “Birds of America” at Audubon State Historic Site in St. Francisville

Lynette also edited and contributed to an enlightening book, Chained to the Land: Voices from Cotton & Cane Plantations. Over 15 years, she and her staff researched the stories of more than ParadiseNewsFL.com | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2022

200 slaves who worked on plantations throughout the state, editing their comments, and dedicated the book to her late mother.

St. Francisville On Sunday (17), we visited the Audubon State Historic Site operated by the Louisiana State Parks. A knowledgeable park ranger took us through stately Oakley House built around 1806. In 1830, notable birder John James Audubon stayed at the house for almost four months, tutoring the owner’s young daughter. During this time, he completed sketches for more than 30 of the 127 birds in his “Birds of America” compendium. Examples of many of his sketches can be seen on the walls during the mansion tour. The owner still resides there, so his rooms are private. The site includes a Welcome Center and two slave cabins, giving a glimpse into the farm laborers’ way of life and impact on the development of early America from 1790 to 1830.

Baton Rouge The state capitol on Monday (18) offered a bus tour that passed some of the 17 colleges and universities, including LSU, Xavier and Louisiana State College. The only tour disappointment on the trip was our anticipated Cajun Pride Swamp Adventure boat ride in the Manchac Swamp – sidelined when a tire blew on the bus enroute to the site, about 40 minutes from the boat. It took an hour for a repair truck to change the tire, and then it was too late to get to the tour site as the captain had ended his day. We then learned the swamp was haunted – probably why we had that very flat tire!

Houmas House Landing On Tuesday (19), we were able to walk from the boat to Houmas House, known as the “Sugar Palace.” Both it and the extensive grounds were purchased by Australian John Burnside in 1858 for $1 million. He grew cotton, tobacco, sugar and corn, making it a profitable investment. The mansion’s 16 rooms are preserved, with many of the original furnishings, art and memorabilia. We walked through the beautiful gardens as well. 38

Historic memorabilia at New Orleans’ Museum of Southern Jewish Experience

New Orleans We said goodbye to our ship and fellow passengers as we had booked two days in our third favorite city that we had not been to since the early ‘90s. It was our culinary delight as we were able to return to some of our favorite restaurants. We visited the new Museum of Southern Jewish Experience, opened here this past May after its original launch at the Henry Jacobs Camp in Utica, Miss. Our knowledgeable volunteer guide helped us navigate the Jewish memorabilia, artifacts, and artwork throughout the three museum rooms. Gallery 1 highlighted “From Immigrants to Southerners,” followed by Gallery 2: Fiel Family Atrium, presenting “Foundations of Judaism;” and then Gallery 3 showcasing “The 20th Century & Beyond.” One notable exhibit was a life-size rendition of a seated Ruth Bader Ginsburg that has been on the two Jewish Krewe Mardi Gras floats. We also returned to the historic Audubon Zoo, opened in 1885 and still dedicated to protect and preserve its 3,000-plus animals and birds, and to educate the public on their vital importance. Our culinary tour included The Court of Two Sisters, shaded by wisteria vines, whose original building was the residence of the second royal governor of New Orleans, operated as a restaurant by the same Fein family the past 50 years. Our first dinner was at Commander’s Palace, originally a truly grand estate, with its stunning chandeliers, artwork and etched wall coverings. Our last dinner was at Antoine’s, across the street from our hotel, with excellent cuisine but a bit disappointing in the lack of artwork and wall coverings. Before our return to Tampa, we had a memorable visit to the historic Café Du Monde on the waterfront where mule-drawn carriages take visitors on a downtown tour. A breakfast of the Café’s noted beignets and café au lait was a lovely end to a truly great trip on the Mississippi. HOME COOKING

By Nanette Wiser

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is a time to reflect on the

past year – and look forward to the coming one. The holiday’s celebratory meal can include favorites like yeasty challah, honey cake, gefilte fish, matzo ball soup, classic beef brisket in a slow cooker, pot roast with thyme-glazed carrots and apples dipped in honey. One of the most popular Rosh Hashanah customs involves eating apple slices dipped in honey, sometimes after saying a special prayer. Ancient Jews believed apples had healing properties, and the honey signifies the hope that the new year will be sweet. The second night of Rosh Hashanah is time to enjoy new seasonal fruit symbolizing gratefulness for being alive such as a pomegranate (one of Israel’s seven species). CHICKEN & TZIMMES 1 onion, 4 tbsp. oil, 2 cloves garlic crushed, salt, 2 lb. carrots, 1 medium sweet potato grated, ¼ cup raisins, ¼ cup dried cranberries, 1 orange, 1 lemon, 4 chicken thighs, 4 chicken drumsticks Directions: Preheat the oven to 400°F. Slice the onion in half rounds. Peel the carrots and slice thinly. Pour the oil into a large frying pan (use a pot if you don’t have a large enough frying pan) and sauté the onions over medium heat until translucent.

Salt to taste. Add the crushed garlic and fry for a minute. Add the grated sweet potato, carrots, raisins, and dried cranberries. Stir. Add another tablespoon or two of oil if necessary. Reduce heat slightly. Zest the orange and the lemon directly into the carrot mixture. Then cut and juice the orange and pour in the juice. Simmer for a couple of minutes until carrots are just steamed through but still firm, then remove from heat. Taste and add salt as needed.

ARTISTS & WRITERS BOOK NOOK Strolling through Tombolo Books, I picked up Paul Wilborn’s hilarious novel Florida Hustle (2022) and Craig Pittman’s quirky essays The State You’re In (2021). Both are great beach reads. With a folksy style, an eye for the absurd, and a passion for the history and environment of his home state, Pittman describes some of Florida’s oddest wildlife as well as its quirkiest people and exotic animals including a love story involving the most tattooed woman in the world, a deep dive into the state’s professional mermaid industry, and an investigation of a battle between residents of a nudist resort and the U.S. Postal Service. Another great summer read from Florida-born Stephen Burdick is The Gray Detective, available on Amazon. A retired civil servant living in Tampa Bay, his first book, Deemer’s Inlet, was published in 2020. Burdick shared the plot with us: “Homicide detective Joe Hampton and his wife, Joyce, had planned to move to Clearwater Beach, Florida, once he retired from the Philadelphia Police Department. After Joyce unexpectedly passes away, Joe goes ahead with the move. Once he’s settled into the Crimson Conch condominiums, his hopes of starting over again are realized—until a series of murders upends his plans for a peaceful retirement. Finding the body of a resident in the channel behind the condominiums, Joe is drawn back into the world of criminal investigation. A rocky beginning with Detectives Carly Truffant and David Sizemore develops into a successful partnership as Joe assists them in their search for the killer.”

GET CREATIVE When the kids go back to school, it’s time for the adults to learn some new tricks as well. Why not get crafty with me? Recently I learned the art of flower hammering, creating cards by tapping pigment out of flowers, very soothing. Next up for me is rag basket making @Beach House 5317, 9/17 in Gulfport. Taught by Lakeland artist Heidi Wineland, a folk artist who works with a variety of materials, including a number of fiber techniques. Her “Kitty Allen” brand soft stuffed dolls and monsters are sold in galleries and shops throughout the U.S. All supplies are included; reservations required. VIRTUAL ARTS Presented by The St. Pete Arts Alliance, Curate St. Pete showcases online video series highlighting St. Pete’s art galleries, studios and talented artists in the seven arts districts. Here you can meet in a Virtual ArtWalk, bid for art from local artists in a Virtual Auction, and enjoy dance, music, theatre, and film including artists at Creative Clay, Mize Gallery, Soft Water Studios, Zen Glass Studios, Florida CraftArts, Duncan McCllelan and more. www.curatestpete.com/explore

PET HEALTH

Teaching Your Child Pet Care Basics FEEDING Caring for a pet offers many benefits for children, encouraging responsible and compassionate behavior. Children can add food and water to dishes, give treats, and handle cleaning duties. When shopping for food, explain the need to choose a food that has the nutrients your pet needs to stay healthy. Too many fillers or unnecessary ingredients may be bad for your pet’s health – just like junk food is bad for people. Children can help clean pet dishes. It’s important to wash them every day to prevent bacterial growth. If bacteria remains, your pet could become ill. By the time children reach 9 or 10, they may be able to handle feeding or cleaning with little supervision.

BRUSHING Many pets benefit from weekly brushing. Brushing removes loose hair and debris from your pet’s body and can prevent hairballs in cats and rabbits. Demonstrate how to use gentle strokes in the direction the hair grows. Coach young children to understand how much pressure to use by trying out the brush on their arms. If your pet has long hair or sheds heavily, more frequent brushings are helpful. Older children can help sweep or vacuum hair from floors, carpets, and furniture. Dogs need frequent baths to remove odors and keep them clean. Your child can help lather and rinse the shampoo from your pet. WALKING OR EXERCISING YOUR PET Unlike adults, kids may never grow tired of playing fetch or Frisbee with your dog or entertaining Tigger with a kitty fishing rod. Exercise improves socialization while keeping your pet healthy. Teach your kids how to walk your dog or cat on a leash or harness in a fenced yard. When your child is comfortable and can control your pet safely, let them control the leash occasionally while you’re out for a walk. Don’t leave young children alone with pets

By Dr. Johnathan Pierce during exercise or any other time. They may be tempted to tease a pet or pull its hair or tail when you’re not around. CLEANING UP Cleaning the litter box or cage and picking up poop in the yard isn’t the most fun pet care task, but it’s essential. When your children are about 9 or 10, they may wish to help with these tasks. Show them how to dispose of waste properly and wash their hands thoroughly afterwards. SOME THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND Every child is different. Some may enthusiastically participate in pet care while others need prodding. Ultimately, your pet’s health and wellbeing depend on you. If your children forget to feed your pet or take it for a walk, you’ll need to step in and do these things yourself. Rose of Sharon - All Natural Health and Beauty Products Althea was born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica. When she moved to New York she developed dry skin issues that steadily got worse no matter what she tried. Althea began researching nut butters and was introduced to shea. “I am still amazed about the many benefits of this little nut.” The formula for her own body butter is mostly shea butter with various butters and oils. Althea moved to Florida in 2016, continued working on her product and gave it to friends, family and co-workers and received rave reviews! When the pandemic struck in early 2020 she got to work on perfecting her line with the focus on using natural high quality ingredients that are affordable to all. Sales were strictly word of mouth until she joined the Corey Ave. Market in 2021. Althea wants you to ‘feel good about the skin you are in.” Her products, filled with shea and other great ingredients, nourish and moisturize your skin. “If we all were more moisturized, the world would be a better place!” Meet Althea Sundays at the Corey Ave. Market June-Sept. summer hours 9am-1pm • Oct.-May 10am-2pm

By Nanette Wiser THE BUTTERFLY WHISPERER Donna Sinicrope, 70, has lived at The Fountains at Boca Ciega Bay since 2019, and immediately founded a Garden Club that year. When someone pointed out a milkweed plant – the sole food source of a monarch caterpillar – growing on a first-floor rooftop near the courtyard, the club’s mission became clear: to start a butterfly garden. During the last few years, Sinicrope and the Garden Club planned, planted and nurtured a butterfly garden that meets the criteria of a MonarchWatch.org “monarch waystation,” locations where the butterflies stop during their annual migration from Canada to Mexico. Monarchs also live in The Fountains’ garden year-round. The Garden Club raised and released nearly two dozen butterflies from caterpillars during a special community celebration in May. You can too. Planting milkweed and nectar plants in a 100-square-foot or larger garden that gets at least six hours’ sun exposure each day is a great place to start. Learn more at www.monarchwatch.org/waystations. START EARTHING Do you remember the last time you walked barefoot at the beach or in the grass? Little did you know that when your bare feet come in contact with the earth, free electrons are taken up by the body. Years of extensive research has shown that connecting to the Earth’s natural energy, by walking barefoot on grass, sand, dirt, or rock can diminish chronic pain, fatigue and other ailments that plague so many people today. When your bare feet or skin comes in contact with the earth, free electrons are taken up into the body. These are nature’s best antioxidants and help neutralize damaging excess free radicals that can lead to inflammation and disease in the body. The Earth’s energy helps the body cope and repair, promoting wellbeing, vitality, and better sleep. It also harmonizes and stabilizes the body’s basic biological rhythms, knocks down chronic inflammation and reduces and eliminates associated pain. Some other ways to get earthing? Swim in ocean or lakes, garden with bare hands, lay on the Earth, hug or lean up against a living tree and wear natural leather-soled shoes instead of plastic or synthetic rubber. “Get Sirius About Your Future”

AUGUST ASTROLOGY Action and energy planet Mars holds steady in slow-moving Taurus until August 20th. We are practical and determined in all undertakings and able to accomplish much with this influence. Mercury visits practical Virgo from the 4th until the 25th bringing logical thinking to plans and projects. These two planets work together to bring about many creative changes with lasting results. This will be the best time to check items off of the to-do list! Love planet Venus leaves sensitive Cancer and visits romantic, dramatic Leo on the 11th. We want to look our best, enjoy social events and do things in a big way the rest of the month. Creative energy is also high. The Full Red Moon in Aquarius is also on the 11th with emotions running high but disciplined. Issues that come to light now can be solved with unusual methods and have lasting outcomes personally or on a humanitarian level. On the 20th Mars visits active, changeable, restless Gemini and will stay there until March of 2023! This is great for multitasking but can send our minds off in too many directions at times resulting in a scattering of our energy. We are easily excited and need a bit of adventure. Enjoy the fun until Mars retrogrades from October to January 2023; more on that later. Two days later on the 22nd, the Sun lights up logical, studious Virgo and we focus on the details as our last month of summer slowly winds down. Thinking planet Mercury moves into creative, diplomatic, Libra on the 25th. We want balance and fairness but can be indecisive. Art and refinement are enjoyed; others are friendly and courteous. The next lunar cycle begins on the 27th with a New Moon in Virgo. Practicality wins as we analyze and discern options, and use original creativity to bring lasting transformations. 64

LEO: Your own personal new year has begun; position or career accented. The full moon highlights relationships; brings clarity. You are popular and social. A new cycle begins with income options and balanced work plans.

AQUARIUS: Relationships are enjoyable. The full moon in your sign focuses on health; brings concerns to the surface. Sudden disruptions in home life are possible. A new start in finances comes at month’s end.

VIRGO: Social time gives way to a full moon focused on health and work issues that surface. New beliefs help you change patterns. Late month the new lunar cycle signals fresh starts with creative changes; transformations.

PISCES: Health seems to improve as the full moon can bring out hidden challenges; reveal obstructions. Defensive driving is needed; conversations explosive. Professional and personal relationships go in new directions.

LIBRA: You are popular with superiors and have a full social calendar. The full moon brings a serious vibe to romance and recreation. New ideas come in meditation for creative changes in home life and financial matters.

ARIES: Home life is enjoyable; creative ideas flow. Energy is focused on earning. The full moon lights up social life but may bring obligations. After the 20th you are restless, and a new path opens for work and wellness.

SCORPIO: You are favored and shine in career; position. The full moon brings home and family obligations to the surface. Relationships change suddenly. Then a new focus on friends, social activities, and future plans.

TAURUS: Your energy is high and directed. The full moon highlights your career and position. Siblings, conversations, and family time is enjoyed. A new cycle begins with romance, children, and creative ideas that work well.

SAGITTARIUS: Health and work bring sudden developments. The full moon brings travel and serious conversations. Your career has many options and new beginnings in work and income this next lunar cycle.

GEMINI: You are restless and on the go. Travel and education are the full moon focus, but with obligations. After the 20th you become energized and motivated. Then, new energy fills your home life and family time later on.

CAPRICORN: Most of the month revolves around financial planning with the full moon focusing on income. Be careful with speculation. Romance can be unpredictable. The new lunar cycle will open travel and education.

CANCER: You are popular, social, and communicative. The focus will be on financial obligations and earnings. Later on, you are busy with private matters. As the month ends, conversations and visits highlight relationships.

ENCOURAGING WORDS

By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones Anger needs to be identified, understood, ventilated, and released in a manner that is proactive rather than reactive. The operative word in the prior sentence is “released.” Why? As Buddha wrote, “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal intending to throw it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.” The misguided missiles of anger we fire at others always come home to roost. It is the acidic energy of long-term resentment that does a slow burn underneath our conscious awareness that does the actual damage. Anger “expressed” mindlessly is simply an outward sign that the fire of resentment is burning within, below the surface, and needs to be extinguished. The question is, where do we begin the process?

Taking the DANGER out of ANGER Is it just me, or have you also noticed an increased level of anger being expressed by many people who might not normally have such a short fuse? These are intense times. Maybe it’s the pending mid-term elections, horrific mass shootings, Mother Nature’s wild unpredictability, or a seemingly endless pandemic – or perhaps a mixture. My empathic side tells me it is not something I should deny or try to avoid because I too feel a bit of anger. So, how do we approach such a “hot” topic as the anatomy of anger? Is it possible to take a peek behind the curtain that shrouds the energy of anger?

Over the years, I have become an avid student of energy and how it moves. What I have discovered is that as human beings, not only are we made of pure energy, we are also conduits through which it flows. Once we understand that thought is energy in one of its purest forms, we’ll understand the thoughts we think make us energy directors. Thus, when we have misguided thoughts fueled by the energy of anger, our words (and actions) can be very destructive. To be clear, there is really nothing wrong with anger when expressed healthily, in a way which does no one (or thing) harm.

Anger often comes from a deep sense of powerlessness. Consider the idea that all fear arises from a concern of loss. Now, consider the idea that anger is an outward manifestation of an inner fear of loss of power; a loss of control over something or someone, including their behavior. The metaphysical writings known as A Course in Miracles, states, “Anger is a cry for love.” When I flash back to my childhood experiences around anger, (which were legion) I can see that it really was a cry for love and acceptance; all coming from a shame-based belief that somehow, I wasn’t good enough (lovable) just as I was. Love seems to be the universal antidote for the toxin of anger once we understand it – especially in these most challenging times. So perhaps the next time we come across the energy of anger ascending within ourselves or another, we might first consider taking a deep intentional breath; and before we react, pull back the curtain and silently ask ourselves, “Who (or what) needs to be loved here?” This is how we can take the danger out of anger. In the process we might just save ourselves from making the best speech we’ll ever regret.

“Get Sirius About Your Future”

SEPTEMBER ASTROLOGY Beautiful Venus visits Virgo on the 5th and we get practical with money and relationships. We will analyze and critique, making logical decisions in spending, finances, and in relationships. Streamlining is easy now as we sort out the unnecessary. It is a good time for detailed work or volunteering to help others. Mercury stations REtrograde in impartial Libra on the 9th. Reconnecting with others, reviewing, and redoing will all be beneficial now. The Full Harvest Moon in Pisces falls on the 10th signaling that it is time to reap what we have sown this year. There is a strong spiritual energy that helps us focus on assisting others and making a difference where we can. The Sun moves into Libra on the 22nd and brings the Autumn Equinox. It is the season of togetherness when we enjoy being with others. We love to entertain and have a good time personally and professionally. Mercury still REtrograde moves back to exacting Virgo on the 23rd. This energy further assists in the details of REevaluation and REleasing that which no longer serves us. Communication and transportation may also have delays. Remember to put off anything new during this cycle. It’s only nine more days before we can safely start moving forward again. The New Moon in Libra on the 25th begins the first lunar cycle of the season. The next two weeks are all about balance, relating, and making inner changes for outer progress. Love and money planet Venus goes home to Libra on the 29th. We wear our hearts on our sleeves and enjoy the things that money can buy. We love beauty, the arts, and being with others. Indecisiveness can be an issue while weighing options.

On the 25th you begin to turn inward to revitalize, meditate and refocus for fall. SAGITTARIUS: Career is enhanced; you are popular with superiors. Home life and family matters are in the full moon spotlight. Work with partners. Your social calendar gets new energy beginning on the 25th. CAPRICORN: Energy is focused on work. Travel is enjoyable as the full moon highlights trips and conversations. Clarify plans and be flexible. New paths open in career or position in the new lunar cycle; you call the shots. A new interest in education and beliefs arise later. PISCES: Partners are agreeable, and relationships are enjoyed. Home is where the action is. The full moon in your sign puts you in the spotlight. Finances are reviewed and enhanced, starting a new cycle on the 25th.

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2022 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

GEMINI: You’re motivated and pulled in many directions. Career, position is in the full moon spotlight. Home life is pleasant, family time enjoyable. A new cycle begins with romance and fun later this month as you reconnect. CANCER: Short trips are pleasurable but the full moon highlights long-distance travel, too. Prepare for unforeseen delays, disruptions. Family relationships have new beginnings later this month as you reconnect. LEO: Income is enhanced, and the full moon focuses on finances and resources.
