COLLECTOR’S DESK Sri Lanka’s Exclusive Series of Curated Art Events
Collector’s Desk, organized by ARTRA Magazine & Saskia Fernando Gallery in collaboration with The Residences at One Galle Face, Shangrila Hotel & Resorts, is a series of curated art events that takes place in the form of quarterly art talks, panels, tours and presentations by eminent international and local professionals in the field of art. The invitee only event caters to an audience interested in impacting the growth of the local art scene.
Saskia Fernando Gallery was established in February 2009 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The gallery expanded in December 2013 to a space where it now stands as the largest contemporary art gallery in the island, housing two exhibition spaces and a private viewing gallery of over 600 works. Artists represented are either Sri Lankan by nationality or have a connection with the local art scene. In addition to presenting exhibitions monthly in the Colombo space, the gallery has collaborated on exhibitions internationally in London, Dubai and Singapore.

CHAMILA GAMAGE, Five Men, Cement and Acrylic This sculpture was commissioned for the hotel based on a smaller ‘Five Men’ Candle Stand sculpture by the same artist, and is placed in the Men’s Lavatory on the Ground Floor of the Hotel. LOCATION - POOLSIDE
SASKIA PINTELON, Rat, Acrylic on Paper One of the artists’ few, very coveted, Rat paintings. The writing beneath the piece plays on the different quotes the artist came across in the local paper. Pintelon painted the Rat after disovering one in a her paint storage cupboard. LOCATION - POOLSIDE
SASKIA PINTELON, Series on Paper The work was purchased specifically for the Dining Room and belong to Pintelon’s early work, in which her subject matter often confronted objects from Sri Lankan life. Pintelon has resided in Sri Lanka since 1982 and her early work confronted subjects of Sri Lanka from the view of an expatriate, often finding beauty in the mundane and humour in the unfamiliar. SASKIA PINTELON, Life, Mixed Media on Paper In this early work by Saskia Pintelon the artist discusses the story of life, beginning with the union of two people and procreation, to death and finally returning to the earth, which is symbolised by the worm in the final image. LOCATION - LIBRARY

RM NAEEM, Mixed Media on Paper This work was gifted to Udayshanth Fernando after Paradise Road Galleries featured a solo show of the artist at Paradsise Road Galleries in 2007. RM Naeem is today one of the leading Pakistani Artists and continues to exhibit his work internationally. ‘The religious iconography which I have connoted through these sexless, bald-headed figures is a symbol of how religions impart the message of peace and it is the factor which binds mankind.’ RM Naeem LOCATION - STAIRWAY

JAGATH RAVINDRA, Reawakening, Acrylic on Canvas Commissioned for the space, the colour palette of this work was provided to the artist in order for it to fall well within the aesthetic of the space. In this early series Ravindra continued to depict the rising figure highlighting the turmoil in Sri Lanka. LOCATION - STAIRWAY
KINGSLEY GUNATILLAKE, Bath, Acrylic on Canvas A 2004 by Kingsley Gunatillake from an exhibition presented at Paradise Road Galleries. Gunatillake focuses almost primarily on abstract expression. LOCATION - FIRST FLOOR
