Targeting a demographics predominated with young singles, this housing proposal puts forth a 14-units complex that examines the notion of boundaries on several scales: urban: building blocks orients itself in introversion and defines a perimeter site strategy with a private courtyard being created as a result. communal: three constituent buildings compliment and contradict one another as generating agency of meaningful social interactions between the inhabitants. room: programs are loosely defined in singular domestic incubators so as to accommodate a diverse range of lifestyles.

Formal exploration was an important asepct of realizing this project. Operations such as stacking, connecting, cropping and arranging were utilized as various iterations were scrutinized both on the formal aesthetics and functional performance.

On the programmatic front, this museum is about its generosity to the public in terms of being more than just a destination for the viewing of art but more importantly for engaging with the realm of art and social gathering. On the architectural front, this museum is about challenging the conventional notion of display and viewing of art as here the art and the architecture coexists within a complementary relationship so as to formulate an experience of a truly sublime ‘art space’.

This project attempts to blend the artificial with the natural through strategic layering in both the x-y and the z direction as means to orchestrate a dramatic architectural experience. For the former, planes of materials abstractly categorized into solid; translucent; and transparent are superimposed so that the elevations become collages of varying opacities dissolving into the lush background. The latter looks at the connection of the superstructure with the ground and the effect of strata.

This project explores and exploits the possibilities of architectural and topographical systems. The initial figure/ground study thus became a critical starting point of the development. Here, issues of adjacency, residue space and interstitial space were investigated. Subsequent exercises include topological grading and solar shading. What arose from these initial studies gave emergence to an architecture that is constructed from two interlocking tectonic systems: earthwork and roof-work. The by-product of such interaction, as a result, became the point of departure in exploring the project architecturally, programmatically and environmentally.
