Fly Strike in Rabbits This is a particularly nasty problem for pet rabbits and unfortunately it’s quite common during the summer for rabbits kept outside. It can occur when the rabbit’s skin gets moist, dirty and matted with faeces. This can arise from several different causes, including wrong diet, a gut infection leading to diarrhoea, obesity, dental problems, housing in unsanitary conditions etc. Flies lay their eggs in the faeces, which hatch into maggots which then burrow into the rabbit’s flesh, damage the skin and muscles, cause infection and gangrene and release toxins. Without rapid veterinary treatment, this condition can be fatal. As with most things prevention is better than cure and along with checking pet rabbits regularly (twice daily) and trying to prevent risk factors like obesity and dental disease, we also recommend all outdoor rabbits be treated with fly repellent specially designed for this problem. This can be purchased from most veterinary practices. If you have a pet-related question for this column, please email it to:

DALSTON SHOW & PARAGON SUMMER FAYRE DALSTON SHOW

& PARAGON SUMMER FAYRE They were two fantastic days and the weather was kind for both!

At the Summer Fayre we had displays by Dakota Gun Dogs, a bouncy castle and face painting fun for the youngsters, Animal Concern, Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue were there to tell us about the great work they do - and from the Animal Refuge at Wetheral we had a special guest apperarance by Blake the Lurcher, whose good looks were saved by Paragon Vets after he suffered severe facial injuries. Paragon Vets and Nurses took our guests on guided ours to see our hospital facilities and to learn a little about life behind the scenes. And of course Charlie the Macaw was the brightest star of the whole show!
