President’s Message acquired with the association of knowledgeable people, by listening to their invaluable words and by watching their actions. Things we hear are opinions, not facts, and we have no control over opinions of others. But what we see is true.

Nature is made up 5 basic elements that are called Panchamahabhut. These five elements are Prithvi (Earth), Jal (Water), Agni (Fire), Vayu (Air) and Aakash (Space). In the human body that is made of Panchamahabhut, there are five gyanindriyas, the 5 knowledge acquiring senses viz. sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch.

There is nothing higher than wisdom. But wisdom begins with our senses of sight(eyes) and hearing(ears)

Our ears and eyes are directly connected to the mind. These are gateways to our soul. When our eyes see a ripe mango, the brain is tickled and at once saliva starts flowing and improves our appetite. Similarly, when we see something negative, there is an instant negative reaction in our body. As food nourishes our body tissues, sensory organs feed and nourish the mind. The right ingredients strengthen our body, similarly the information we acquire through our senses strengthen our conscience and thoughts. When the sensory organs are in good condition, they can filter out negative sensory inputs and positively influence our minds. Sounds and sights are collections of information which is converted into knowledge. Knowledge creates questions and the answers we seek to those questions is wisdom. Wisdom can be

So, it is very important to keep our senses of sight and hearing healthy. In this issues, we are going to share experience on how you can keep senses active and strong lifelong and enjoy your life to the fullest. Now that summer season is slowly setting in, it is high time to ensure proper care and protection to your eyes against risks of UV exposure, conjunctivitis and dry eyes. Ayurveda suggests many treatments to prevent Drishti Dosha (failing vision). Applying Kajal, washing eyes regularly with clean cool water, drinking Amla juice and consuming Triphala are simple things that you can do to keep eyesight strong. There is no doubt in my mind that if we keep our gyanindriyas strong and healthy, we will gather correct information which will lead to knowledge of the truth, and based on that knowledge we will become enlightened with priceless wisdom. If you would like to share your personal experiences and thoughts on this topic, feel free to write in to me at rishi@jiva.com Wishing you peace, health and happiness.

THE SHASTRA

Dr. Partap Chauhan

of SHALAKYA TANTRa A brief history of Shalakya Tantra

Ayurveda is that tree of immortality in which each branch contains a cure that can alleviate an ailment in our body. There are a total of 8 branches in Ayurveda and they are together known as Ashthanga Ayurveda. One of those branches is Shalakya Tantra. Today, let us take a look at Shalakya Tantra.

Ayurveda is a combination of 8 different branches, one of which is Shalakya Tantra. The origin of the name can be traced to the word Shalaka which means ‘to investigate’. Shusruta was an expert in all 8 branches of Ayurveda, he was known to have done reconstructive surgery on detached nose, cataracts and other complicated diseases of the ear, nose and eyes. He pioneered the process of sterilizing his tools before operation to prevent the risk of eye infection caused by contamination. Back in the days when the world was yet to understand the need for organized surgery, Sage Shusruta was already treating patients with the help of painless eye surgery. He administered Ayurvedic anaesthesia to reduce the sensation of pain. Besides operating on cataracts, the sage also prevented the spread of eye infections with the help of Ashyoanjan Vidhi (a

process of putting Ayurvedic medicines on the eye) and Putpak Vidhi (a process of covering the eye with leaves of certain trees or medicated clothes) to offer long term relief against some of the most common eye infections and diseases. Both of these processes were very beneficial in several eye diseases and has been mentioned in the Shusruta Samhita. The benefits and procedures of Shalakya Tantra can be found in other Ayurvedic scriptures too. Shalakya Tantra deals with more than just the serious aspects of the ears, nose and throat. There are also mentions of treatment for common diseases of the eye, neck and ears. This proves that Ayurveda does not deal with simple diseases but also major aliments of the eyes, nose and throat. To briefly summarize, Shalakya Tantra addresses all problems, big or small, above the neck. This includes the eyes, nose, throat, mouth as well the head in general and offers solutions for a vast range of diseases. Apr 2017 PARAMAYU

Methods of treatment mentioned in Shalakya Tantra

There are 6 different solutions mentioned in the Tantra. Each of these deal with a different aspect of the problem. Let’s take a look at each of them in details. Nasya Karma: This treatment is administered via the nasal passage and is also known as Nasya Therapy. The therapy has known benefits in problems of the nose, ears, eyes and neck. The therapy has a direct effect in reducing mucus from the nasal channels. Shirodhara: The word is a combination of two words: Shir (head) and Dhara (flow). In essence this means a process which defines the process of letting a fluid drip constantly on the forehead in between the brows. Shirodhara is very effective in reducing stress, insomnia, restlessness, irritation and anxiety. Shirovasti: This process means pool-

ing of oil over the head by creating a compartment to hold the oil. The compartment is made of banana leaves or a similar container which is then placed over the head before pouring in medicated oil to fill the compartment. Karnapurana: Karnapurna is a process where medicated oil is poured inside the ear canal to balance Vata. This process is very beneficial in curing problems such as insomnia, Tinnitus, headaches or anxiety. Gandusha: This is another process that uses medicated oil to gurgle for relief in oral infections, lubricates the throat and restores pH balance of the mouth. Takradhara: Takradhara is a combination of two words: Takra (butter milk) and Dhara (flow). This is effective in insomnia, chronic headaches like migraine, ear nose diseases, neuropathy and spondylitis. This is also known as Sarbaag Takradhara.

Shalakya Tantra is also known as Urdhavarga Chikitsa which deals with the ailments and problems of the parts located above the neck. This deals with problems of the nose, ear, eyes and the neck. Shalakya Tantra can be compared with E.N.T and ophthalmology in western medicine. 12

When is Salakya Treatment Useful? Salakya therapy is particularly useful for people suffering from problems of the nose, ears, throat and eyes. The therapy is effective in more than 72 different diseases (including cataracts and glaucoma) for the eyes alone. Besides that, this therapy has known benefits in 28 ear diseases, 31 nose diseases and 65 diseases of the throat and mouth.

Making a Difference Expert Speak

When infants begin to put their hands on everything in sight, parents respond by telling them, “Don’t touch.” When children get older and start asking “too many questions”, they are instructed to “keep quiet”. In most schools, the scenario is not much better; students are packed inside classrooms and forced to memorise countless volumes of unrelated information, for the sole purpose of passing exams. Education must encourage student’s interests, opinions, and life skills. It must enable them to cultivate passion and unique abilities. For it is only when they have competence in an area of work, they are enthusiastic about it as well, will live on to lead a life with gusto and achieve something extraordinary.

How Can You Help Your Child to Explore?

Parents are usually afraid of letting their children out of sight because they fear that their children will get hurt. But, it is important for parents to realize that it is not possible to protect the child from every bit of danger that he or she could possibly confront in life. So, instead of being overprotective, it’d be better to allow children the right amount of freedom to explore the world without worrying about their safety since children automatically develop a balanced sense of caution. Here a few pointers that will help you encourage your child to explore better.

According to the Vedas, humans have an inbuilt drive to “know” – natural urge to want to understand the world around them. Unfortunately, adults do not always keep up with a child’s insatiable appetite to learn. 18

Paramayu Apr 2017

UNDERSTAND AND EXPLAIN CHILDREN THAT MISTAKES ARE PART OF THE GAME

DON’T RIDICULE THE RIDICULOUS

In the process of exploring their worlds, children will sometimes wind up saying what seems like the dumbest things. You need to recognise their comments as an attempt of their developing brains to make sense of their world in the best way that they know how. Take this as an opportunity to help them clear their misunderstandings. When they come out with something amiss, avoid discouraging or insulting them because that can make them feel guilty for their lack of understanding, and inadvertently erode their self-confidence – even, suppressing their desire to learn. When children don’t understand something, it means they have not had enough exposure to that concept. Instead of criticising them, ask them questions about what they have understood so you can provide more accurate perspectives or additional information that will clear up the misconceptions. Tip: Do not hide behind your ego if your child asks a question and you do not know the answer to it. Admit that you do not know by saying “you know, that’s a good question but I don’t know the answer.” In the process, they will learn that not knowing an answer does not make you dumb, and that smart people are those who turn a lack of knowledge into an opportunity to learn something new.

Making mistakes is a part of the learning process. If your child is making mistakes, they are not learning. Avoid scolding or punishing children for making errors, especially when they are related to exploring their worlds. If your son is trying to do a trick on his bicycle and has a crash, instead of yelling at him for being careless, ask him instead what he was trying to do, how could he have avoided it – and what he learned in the process. If you merely scold him, he will continue to do crazy things on his bike, but he will just hide them from you.

HELP THEM MAKE MEANING

These days, kids are really smart. They are the ones adults turn to when they need help operating the TV, DVD player or the computer. Keep in mind, however, that while your kids might be far ahead of you in certain areas, you are still much more experienced than them in “life issues”. They lag far behind you in how to solve social problems and make effective life decisions. Your children desperately need your experience and wisdom to make meaning out of the barrage of information that overloads their minds daily. The key to encourage your children to explore more is to make sure they are challenged. If kids find activity too easy, they will quickly lose interest. On the other hand, if the task is too difficult, they may become stressed out and give up. So, you need to play the role of a facilitator, constantly modifying your children’s activities so that they are just above their current ability level.

Spirituality DEEPER AYURVEDA

ROLE OF ENT IN

hUMAN RELATIONS AND SPIRITUALITY An old English proverb says, “A good speaker should be a good listener.” This means, to speak knowledgeably, one has to be a good listener first. Listening attentively is a skill and the person who acquires it becomes successful in all aspects of life.

DEEPER AYURVEDA Spirituality

An Introduction to senses

For a successful life, material or spiritual, health is very important. Health does not mean just a good-looking body, but proper functioning of the senses and the mind. In Bhagavad Gita (3.42), Shri Krishna says that the senses are superior to the body. This is because we deal with the external world through our senses. The soul is encaged in the body and the senses are like the windows to the external world. We have two types of senses, the working senses called karmendriya, and the cognitive senses called jnanendriya. Both categories have five senses each. Ear and nose are the part of jnanaedirya, and throat, which has the vocal chords, is a karmendriya.

Importance of the sense of hearing

Hearing is one of the most important sources of knowledge. Although we gain a lot of knowledge by seeing through our eyes, and there is popular saying, “Seeing is believing,” we cannot gain knowledge of past events through the sense

22

PARAMAYU Apr 2017

of seeing. All knowledge of the past or future events comes by hearing. Thus, sense of hearing has a wider range than sense of sight. Even when we see things, such as watching a movie or a show on TV, we need to hear along with watching to get a clear understanding of the scene. Thus hearing plays an important role in acquiring knowledge about the world around us. The faculty of seeing has further limitations. We cannot see objects in the dark, or objects that are obstructed by some medium such as a wall. But we can still hear under these conditions. When we are sleeping we do not see things around us, but we can be woken up by sound. This tells us how important our ears are. God made eyelids over our eyes and thus we can close them at our will. But ears are always open day and night, whether we are awake or sleeping. This means the ears are put to use more than other senses. If our hearing faculty is not functioning properly we can hear things wrongly, which can lead to misinformation and misunderstanding. Therefore, it is very important to keep our ears in good health.

Listening is more important than Hearing

There is a difference between hearing and listening. Many times we hear others but we do not listen. Listening is an art that seems to be lost at present. One of the major causes behind broken or unhealthy human relations is lack of proper listening. One of the common complaint between partners is, “He (She) never listens to me.” Human beings have a great need to express themselves, especially to their nearest relation. Expressing our ideas, feeling and emotions to others makes us feel connected and gives a sense of relief and makes us happy. We want to be understood by our dear ones. Otherwise we feel lonely and miserable. The yearning to be listened to and understood is a yearning to escape our separateness and bridge the space that divides us. It is said that a normal human being needs to speak between 4,000-8,000 words per day. Women, in general, have a greater need to speak because it is by speaking that they relieve themselves of their stress.

The role of ‘Listening’ in Human Relationships Shri Rupa Gosvami, a medieval saint and scholar of Vrindavan, says that to speak in confidence and to question in confidence are two of the six characteristics of love, (the other four being to give a gift, to accept a gift, to eat with and to feed the lover). The essence of good listening is empathy. This can be achieved only by suspending our own preoccupation in order to enter into the world of the other person. Usually when we are listening to someone there is chatter going in our own head. We may be thinking of our problems, anxieties, or we are planning to reply or to question what the other person is saying. We rarely listen in a neutral, unbiased manner and have preconceived ideas about the person speaking and based on that we make judgments even before the speaker has spoken completely. A listener’s empathy builds a bond of understanding and transforms relationships.

Be an emphatic Listener to Attain Perfection It is by listening properly that one attains perfection. After attaining perfection, one relishes listening even more than before. If we really want to feel heard by another, the trick is to give this gift of empathetic listening to them first. Then, they will naturally want to do the same for you. Additionally, in giving an account of our experience to someone who listens, we are better able to listen to our selves and thus refine our own understanding. In spiritual life, listening is the first step, but not the last. Thus hearing from a master is recommended in the Upanishads as well as by Krishna in Bhagavad Gita. Scriptures such as the Gita are in the form of a dialogue which highlights the importance of listening over speaking. Only by being an emphatic listener, one can attain perfection.

Sexual Health DEEPER AYURVEDA

WEIGHT LOSS shouldn’t become loss of sexual health

Misled by images of super thin models in media, many among us have wrongfully chosen size zero as an ideal path to looking good. In the mad rush to achieve poster perfect figure, are you losing your sexual health? Anything in excess is detrimental. Weight or rather body mass is one of those topics. Blame it on the media and how skinny thin people are portrayed in glamorous lead roles, an average person connects success and glamour with being thin. In the same way, obese people are often portrayed in comical roles which sets a negative impression on viewers. To avoid being compared with such unglamorous examples, people usually take unhealthy shortcuts to shed weight. Being obese takes a toll on self-respect but severe weight loss definitely reduces overall energy levels and libido. Are you taking the fight against obesity too far?

Signs of Unhealthy Weight Loss

Following diet plans that promise outlandish things such as ‘lose 100 calories’ or ‘lose weight in one week’ is very unlikely to give any real benefits. Instead there will be severe repercussions on your libido and health. Here are some signs of unhealthy weight loss: Visible bones on the neck and chest Loss of immunity Severe weight loss in thighs & buttocks Unhealthy body mass index Very tall cheek bones and eye brows

Ayurvedic Perspective on Weight Loss

Ayurveda focuses on the importance of maintaining a healthy weight. Excessively thin or excessively heavy physique isn’t considered ideal in Ayurveda. Being skinny can lead to other health related issues and even be a cause of death. According to Ayurveda, the digestive fire (Jatharaagni) has to be maintained for overall health. For the lack of eating timely, the digestive fire becomes weak and affects the formation of necessary elements in the body such as blood (Rakta), muscle fibres (Mans), bones (Aasthi), marrow (Majja) and sperms (Shukradhatu). This also affects the production of other necessary nutrients in the body. This imbalance is caused by both eating very less or overeating.

Effect on Sexual Health

To maintain sexual health one has to consume a proper nourishing diet and stay physically active as well. Ayurvedic scriptures say that for the formation of sperm and ovum, one has to be healthy in every aspect. For the lack of a nourishing diet, energy levels drop and affects sexual pleasure and performance. This can also lead to muscular strains, tiredness and poor performance in bed.

Celebrate Akshaya Tritiya The Celebration of Wellness & Prosperity with Good Health

Akshaya is a Sanskrit word which means ‘never diminishing’. It is an auspicious day which is considered perfect to initiate new things, solemnize weddings, start a new business, or begin new construction. As Spring season fades away and summers begin in good earnest, the weather gets drier by the day, hot dry air sucks the spirit out of even the most cheerful person and the relentless sun forces us to stay indoors and get bored. This is when Akshaya Tritiya comes and gives us a moment of joy to celebrate with our friends and family. Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated in the month of Baisakh (second half of April and first half of May), on the third day of Shukla Paksa (moving towards a full moon). Hindus consider this day very auspicious to start a new business, solemnize weddings, make pious donations, or start sowing seeds in farmlands.

Significance of Akshaya Tritiya

There is a huge significance of Akshaya Tritiya among Hindus all over the world. Businessmen all over India, replace old accounts keeping ledgers with new ones on this day. According to Hindu scriptures, this was the day when Ved Vyas began authoring The Mahabharata, Lord Vishnu came to earth in his 6th avatar as Bhagwan Parashurama, Lord Krishna gifted the ‘Ak-

shaya Patra’ to Yudhistira, a plate that perpetually refilled with food, and this is also the day when The Ganges flowed down to earth. Don’t miss out on celebrating the day. Here is how to avoid falling unwell because of common summertime illnesses.

Here is what to do Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration Consume fresh fruits like bananas, watermelon, wood apple (Bael), sweet lemon (mausambi) and green fresh salads Do not drink refrigerated water immediately after coming from under the sun. Drink water at room temperature When venturing outdoors, keep your face and head covered to prevent heatstroke

Here is what not to do Do not eat in excess. Avoid eating fried, spicy or rich foods. Do not drink contaminated water, this may cause diarrhoea or upset stomach. Do not step out under hot sun.

Tonsillitis childhood under threat The sweet chuckles, squeals and babbles of a child fills the home with happiness. But ailments of the throat can put a veil of silence on your child and rob you off the joys of listening to those priceless sounds. One of the common throat ailments that affect young children is tonsillitis.

Apr 2017 PARAMAYU

25

DEEPER AYURVEDA Kid’s Special

T

onsillitis is an infection of the tonsils - the lymphoid tissues in the neck on either side of the tongue. Long bouts of tonsillitis or a chronic form of the disease can be detrimental to the overall wellbeing of the child. If you observe tonsillitis occurring in your child after every 2-3 months, it is said to have taken a chronic form and must be given necessary medical attention.

What are tonsils?

Tonsils are a pair of soft tissues which are located at the rear of the throat and is part of the lymphatic system. This helps in fighting infections and are different in size in different individuals. Tonsils swell as a response to infection and the condition is then called tonsillitis. The condition affects people of all ages, but is most common in children of schooling age. Tonsillitis is triggered when the body encounters bacteria and virus infections. These must be treated on time to prevent this from becoming a serious health issue.

Why are children more susceptible to tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis can happen to people across all age groups but children and young teens (below the age of 14) are more at risk because according to Ayurveda, this is when the amount of Kapha is naturally more in them. Tonsils can become enlarged because of allergies caused by dust, and the age group under con26

sideration is quite likely to spend the majority of their time outdoors where they are more likely to come in contact with dust and other irritants. The third reason is low immunity in children below a certain age group. Cases of tonsillitis increase especially during season transitions, such as during the months of March or September.

Often we do not give simple ailments the due importance they deserve and unfortunately these turn into serious ailments and cause a lot of trouble, especially for children. Case in point: Tonsillitis.

Kid’s Special DEEPER AYURVEDA

Symptoms of Tonsillitis

The primary reason behind tonsillitis is either bacterial or viral infection. The most common symptoms are: Very sore throat Difficulty in swallowing Scratchy tone in voice Fevers, chills, stomach and body aches Stiff neck and jaws Low energy levels Poor appetite Excessive drooling For the lack of proper medication, children can become very ill, miss school and in the worst case scenario, surgery may become necessary to remove the tonsils.

How does Tonsillitis affect children?

The tonsils and adenoid glands get enlarged due to bacterial or viral infections. In both cases, this leads to pain and discomfort. Additional effects include fever, cold chills, puss and phlegm formation and general malaise caused by inability to breathe properly. Chronic issues hinder proper growth and mental development of the kid. Since the nose and ears are connected, enlarged adenoids may cause accumulation of fluids behind the ears or ear infections. Because of pain in swallowing, children often eat less and lose weight or suffer from malnutrition.

The lens of Ayurveda on Tonsillitis

In Ayurveda, the cause of tonsillitis is said to be accumulation of toxins in the body or because of poor digestion. Another reason is poor immunity which fails to prevent the body from being affected by viruses or bacteria. Treatment focuses on improving the immunity system through balancing doshas and by strengthening the body against further attacks. Treatment combines herbs, proper diet and lifestyle recommendations.

Different types of tonsillitis

Infection of the tonsils can manifest in different forms. Here are the three most common types of infections.

Acute Tonsillitis: Acute tonsil-

litis begin gradually with fever and throat infection. Throat discomfort is caused by the Streptococcus Virus and is accompanied by several symptoms such as swollen lymph nodes, drooling, difficultly in swallowing and fever. Tonsilloliths (Tonsil Stones): Chronic tonsillitis can lead to the formation of small stones in the back of the neck. These stones are comprised of sulphur which causes foul smell of rotten eggs. Peritonsillar Abscess: This is another infection of the tonsils which is characterized by accumulation of puss around the tonsils. In severe cases this leads to breathing problems

Diet and Lifestyle Recommendations Drink plenty of water. Warm soup, warm milk with honey or warm turmeric milk is helpful in reducing pain and discomfort. Choose easy-to-swallow and soft food items. Kichadi and boiled lentils are easy to consume. Avoid cold drinks and spicy foods. Yogurt, lassi and buttermilk should also be avoided to prevent aggravation of infection. Prevent being in an air-polluted area. Give your child a mask when going to school or when going outdoors.

Home Remedies Mix 1 teaspoon of common salt to half a glass of lukewarm water and gurgle. Add equal amounts of Mulethi (liquorice), Vaksha & Kulanjana (Alpenia galanga) powder with honey. This is effective in treating infection and reducing discomfort. Apr 2017 PARAMAYU

SALT

THE KING IN YOUR KITCHEN The story behind processing salt from sea water is around 8000 years old. Some of the earliest mentions of the process of salt making speaks of ancient Romanians boiling stream water to extract salt. The Chinese were also extracting salt from specially designed salt lakes. Salt was a popular business commodity and sea faring merchants ferried salt all over the world. Many wars were fought to occupy salt sources and history is witness to salt being accepted as tax.

S

alt production is mainly done from sea water which has 3.5% by weight of salt, or in other words, 1 litre of sea water contains 35 grams of salt. Another big source of salt are

the salt mountains which are formed because of lakes and seas drying up. Sodium in salt is necessary to balance electrolyte balance.

Properties & Structure of Salt According to Ayurveda, the nature of salt is made of water and fire elements. Because of water element, salt is heavy in nature and fire element in salt leads to aggravation of Pitta Dosha. 28

Types of different salts and their descriptions In Ayurveda, salt has been primarily divided into 5 different types which are Saindhya Salt (which is best among salts), Sea Salt (table salt), Widh Salt (a type of Black salt), Souwarchal Salt and Romak Salt. Let’s see more of these salts in details: 1. Saindhya Salt: Sage Charaka says that of all salts, this is the best. This is also known as “Chloride of Sodium”. This has a white or reddish appearance. In Ayurveda this is used to improve appetite and digestion and also for relief in other ailments. By nature, this is cool. 2. Sea Salt: When sun rays strike the sea water, it evaporates leaving salt behind. This exists as white cubicles and the chemical name is “Sodium Chloride”. Sea salt increases the production of saliva and gastric juices in the stomach. 3. Widh Salt (Black Salt): This salt does not exist naturally and is made from a mixture of several ingredients. Elements like Sodium Sulphate, Alumina and Magnesium are found in it. 4. Souwarchal Salt: This dark brown salt is made by mixing common salt with crude soda and evaporating the solution. It has a hard crystalline form and looks like a big lump. 5. Romak Salt: This is found only in Ajmer in Rajasthan. It has sodium chloride, total chloride and sodium bicarbonate in it and the round crystals have a brownish colour.

Black Salt

Primarily, salt is extracted from sea water or from naturally occurring sodium halite. Sea water salt contains over 80 different minerals which are essential for the body. And in the human body more than 27% of salt is found in the bones.

Black salt which comes in dark brown coloured crystals is a rich source of iron and other minerals. In Ayurveda it is considered to have a cooling effect on the body. Black salt is used in many Ayurvedic formulations and is a popular ingredient in Indian cuisine.

Health benefits of Salt

On one hand salt is good for digestion, but too much of it can be harmful. Let’s learn about the benefits of salt: Salt contains minerals such as magnesium, calcium, sodium and bromide. Washing hands and feet with salt water penetrates skin hair follicles and gives you shinning skin. Salt is effective in reducing muscle pain and swelling caused by Arthritis or other injuries. According to Charaka Samhita, salt helps in digestion, constipation, Gulya (formation of air bubbles in stomach) and stomach aches. This also helps in maintaining the body’s salts and minerals. Using warm salt water to gurgle helps to reduce toothache and pain because of tonsillitis. Salt added water helps in insomnia and keeps bones strong.

Negative Health Effects of Salt

1. Excess consumption of salt is bad for cardiac health, high blood pressure, obesity, dehydration, swelling, weakness of bones. 2. Ayurveda says that excessive salt can cause an imbalance of Kapha and Pitta which increases thirst, burning sensation, weakness in muscles, skin diseases, tooth problems, blood diseases, wrinkles, hairfall etc. 3. Absence of iodine causes goitre and thyroid related diseases. Iodized salt is the primary source of iodine for most people. Apr 2017 PARAMAYU

Don't let your sweat dissolve you

Summers mean a lot of beauty problems. Of all summertime problems, perhaps the most common is excessive sweating. Not only does excessive sweating cause discomfort, in certain circumstances this can become a cause of embarrassment. To enjoy summers to the fullest, it is important that you stay fresh and keep the problem of sweating at bay.

30

PARAMAYU Apr 2017

D

uring summer our body responds to the excess heat by sweating. As soon as the sweat dries up, it leaves behind a layer of salt or urea which attracts disease causing microbes and also causes malodour. For the lack of care, this can lead to several problems.

What causes excessive sweating?

Sweating profusely can deplete your energy levels and lead to feelings of exertion. This is called hyperhidrosis and is broadly classified as: primary hyperhidrosis and secondary hyperhidrosis. When your palms, feet and underarms are wet with sweat the condition is known as primary hyperhidrosis. In some cases, this is normal, but the causes of this are usually stress, heart or lung diseases. Secondary hyperhidrosis happens because of an underlying health condition, such as obesity, gout, menopause, tumour, diabetes or hyperthyroidism.

Causes of Primary Hyperhidrosis

Primary hyperhidrosis has no significant cause other than mental or emotional stress. To prevent this, keep your mind calm and avoid stressful situations. Causes of Secondary Hyperhidrosis Problems of the spinal column Addiction Fear & Anxiety Diabetes Heart Disease Hyperthyroidism Pregnancy Respiratory system Cancer Human Immunodeficiency Virus

(H.I.V) Tuberculosis (T.B) Dry Skin Other diseases caused by Hyperhidrosis Nail Infection Skin Wart Bacterial Infection Prickly Heat Stress Mineral Deficiency Dry Skin

Sweating isn’t a problem in itself. Sweating helps the body get rid of toxins and keeps the body cool. But when sweat becomes the cause of body odour, it negatively affects our personality.

Ayurvedic Reasons

According to Ayurveda, excessive Pitta Dosha is the reason behind excessive sweating. Stress and emotional turmoil are also other reasons that contribute to the problem of hyperhidrosis. There are multiple solutions in Ayurveda for this. Ayurveda also mentions a condition that is known as ‘Svedadhikya’ which in essence means excessive sweating.

How to Prevent Hyperhidrosis Prevent physical exertion. Strenuous work out in the gym during summers isn’t advisable. Ayurveda advises that during exercise if you start sweating profusely or feel extreme exertion and rapid breathing then stop working out immediately. When the weather is warm avoid wearing figure hugging tight

clothes. Choose cotton clothes which are very good in absorbing sweat and should be your first choice in summers. Using scented tissue papers to wipe off sweat can be helpful in preventing odour. To smell fresh all day, you can use a body wash with the essence of lemon in it. A good home remedy to smell fresh all day is to dip slices of lemon and rose petals in your bathing water at night and bathing with it the next morning.

After taking your bath, use talcum powder to prevent malodour. You may also use deodorant in your underarms. Avoid using too much spice in your food because this effects the smell of your sweat too. Sweat contains propionic acid which smells like vinegar. To reduce the concentration of propionic acid in your sweat drink 12-15 glasses of water a day. Apr 2017 PARAMAYU
