yurveda considers the mind to be the root-cause of many diseases. Negative emotions such as fear, anger, greed, and jealousy are the seeds from which diseases germinate. These emotions create a web of negativity and despair which makes man unhappy.

Primary Psychological Diseases

Psychological diseases are of different types and are caused by different reasons. These diseases can be caused by stress, state of the mind, wrong diet or worrying excessively.

Most battles are won before they are fought. The victor has already won the battle in his mind, he goes in to the battlefield confident he will win the war. Everything in life begins with your mind. As long as you are confident in your mind of winning, your chances of winning are high. But if you feel defeated in your mind, then you may lose even an easy battle.

Here are some of the most common psychological diseases: Aparsmar (Epilepsy) Unmaad (Mania) Avsaad (Depression) Stress Addiction Fear Paranoia Loss of memory

Symptoms of Psychological Diseases

Being depressed most of the time Restlessness or lack of attention Fear Drastic changes in state of the mind Fatigue and weakness Escaping reality Change in dietary habits Excessive anger Suicidal tendencies

Physical manifestations of psychological problems

People with psychological problems often exhibit some common phys-

ical problems too. Gout, heart diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, stomach-ache, backache, headache are often seen in people with psychological diseases.

Causes of psychological diseases

There are several known causes of psychological diseases. Here are some of the most frequently known ones. Hereditary: Some psychological problem can have hereditary origins. Congenital heart diseases, Arythmia or high blood cholesterol are some diseases which may be inherited. Developed during pregnancy: During pregnancy, environmental stress, consumption of alcohol, drugs or wrong lifestyles can create psychological problems in the baby. Mental Trauma or Shock: Physical impact on the head, scary episodes, or emotional traumas are also associated with psychological diseases such as paranoia, stress or depression. The brain is a delicate structure which may become damaged due to physical injuries. Oct 2018 Paramayu

human mind – Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. These gunas define a person’s behaviour. Sattva guna signifies all positive qualities in a person such as self-control, knowledge and discretion. Rajas guna signifies jealousy, spite, desire and greed. Tamas guna signifies lethargy, weakness and numbness. Excess of Rajas and Tamas are considered negative, whereas Sattva is considered to be a positive. In addition to the gunas, the three different doshas (Vata, Pitta & Kapha) are also crucial in keeping the body and mind healthy.

Spirituality DEEPER AYURVEDA

Mind your gut

Dr. Satya Narayana Dasa

DEEPER AYURVEDA Spirituality

A

yurveda says that food has an influence on our mood. The Sanskrit word rasa means both taste of food as well as mood. The relation between food and mood has been confirmed by the modern science. We can also know it by our own experience. Everyone knows that sweets lift our mood. How does it happen? Our gut and brain are linked together. Gut is like our second brain and we often use the phrase “gut-feeling”. Gut and brain communicate with each other both physically and biochemically. They influence each other. If our gut microbes change, our brain and mood can change. The converse is also true. If our mood is influenced by stress, anxiety, desire, relation, circumstance, weather, job or anything else, our bacteria situation in the gut can be dramatically altered. Although we believe that it is our mind who is holding control over thoughts, actions, desires and physiological functions but microbes in the gut seem to have great role to play. Modern medical science has begun to accept what was known to Ayurveda. The gut microbes feed on various types of foods. Some of them thrive on fats while others on sugar, starch or carb. Therefore, the diet we consume is directly feeding and helping to flourish a certain type of microbe. If we have a liking for sweet and indulge in it quite often, then we have created a large population of gut microbes that love sweets. These, microbes send message to the brain to crave for sweets. Once they get their supply we feel very satisfied. This can make us addicted to the sweets which can further result in diabetes. Keeping this in mind, Ayurveda recommends a change of diet with each season. Supplying a different type of microbes to the gut with each change of season makes sure that our gut

is not flooded with only one type of microbe. Ayurveda also recommends to eat seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Rules on eating healthy

In the Dharma-shastra, there are various rules regarding food. These rules are quite often doubted by the modern practitioners who judge the value of food only from the point of protein, vitamins, minerals and calories. Their understanding is not wrong but only limited to the effect of food on the physical body. Dharmashastra has a deeper vision. They consider the effect of food not only on the gross body but also the mind. And for them protecting the mind is greater priority. It is for this reason that they put restriction on certain foods which are vegetarian and may have many medicinal qualities, such onion, garlic, carrots. One of the three types of treatment, according to Ayurveda, is sattva-avajaya, or keeping the mind in balanced state. For this Ayurveda recommends sattvika lifestyle. Living a Sattvika lifestyle includes consuming only sattvika food that will populate positive thought-provoking microbes in our guts. Another important factor of sattvika lifestyle is regular introspection of one’s own diet, behaviour, thoughts, and feelings. For example, if you are eating too much sweet tasting food, you can ask yourself, “Why do I eat too many sweets? Why can’t I control my tongue? There must be some deeper reason? What emotions are causing my tongue to crave the sweet taste?” A person who asks these types of questions of themselves might come to realize that they are actually

missing sweetness of a more subtle kind in their life. Are they having bitter or strained relations with their spouse or mother-in-law or child? One way the body compensates for bitter relations is by eating too many sweets. Introspection to the root cause of the problem can then help you make a change in your diet and lifestyle also at the root cause. So, in this case, you could try to cultivate more loving relationships, first by becoming more gentle, kind, and loving with yourself. And ultimately you begin to choose to open your heart fully only to those who can reciprocate your love.

Did Ayurveda know about microbes?

One may raise a doubt, “Did Ayurveda know about microbes? Or is it that we are now interpolating modern knowledge into Ayurveda?” Indeed Ayurveda knew about microbes and called them krimi. They are found in milk, butter, yogurt, soil, body, pots and pans and in many other places. Ayurveda gives an extensive description of krimis found in food and guts. Poor hygiene was described as one of the cause of krimi proliferation in the guts. Many of the principles of hygiene found in Ayurveda as well as in Dharmashastras are to ensure that only beneficial krimi would proliferate in our guts, respiratory tract and skin. Besides this Ayurveda also recommends a sattvka lifestyle. This includes being non-violent, truthful, compassionate, regular in eating and sleeping, not exerting excessively, being content, not over-indulging in sensual pleasures, maintaining a positive attitude about life, being godly and so on. Modern science also has come to accept that our behaviour breeds microbes in our guts and the microbes influence our behaviour. If some of these basic principles about food and lifestyle can be accepted our mind will be more peaceful, balanced and happy. There will not be so much crime in the society. People will have healthy, loving relations.

Sexual Health DEEPER AYURVEDA

Desires, good or bad, should be kept under control. Our mind keeps a balance on our emotions and desires, but when the mind is itself out of control, staying healthy becomes a challenge. One such condition of the mind is known as Hysteria. In an advanced stage, Hysteria can mess up life and create obstacles on the path of leading a fulfilling life.

I

n Ayurveda, Hysteria is known as Yoshapsmar. This is a condition of the mind when it becomes very excited or irrationally emotional about certain matters that are seemingly normal to others. A person suffering from Hysteria does not have control over his emotions. Women are more likely to be suffering from Hysteria than men. The formative years of childhood and transition from teenage to adulthood can bring certain changes in the mind of a person which leads to this ailment. Let us take a look at the causes of Hysteria.

Reasons of Hysteria Emotional pressure

Hysteria can disturb your sexual life

Hysteria, in simple words, is a state of the mind when it becomes excessively emotional or excited even with simple matters. Oct 2018 Paramayu

DEEPER AYURVEDA Sexual Health

Fear or sense of insecurity Suppressing the urges for sexual release Disturbed relationships in the family Suffering from stress or tension Long term diseases or trauma Depression Addiction to drugs

Effect on sexual health

A hysterical person often exhibits symptoms such as hallucinations, nervousness, partial paralysis, breathlessness and despair. Naturally, a person with such mental states cannot engage in a healthy sexual congress. In a conjugal life, if one of the partner is hysterical, it strains the relationship. In extreme cases, this may lead to non-functional relationships or divorce

Treatment

One of the major reasons of hysteria is loneliness. Therapy and counselling plays a very big role. The most effective way to help a person with Hysteria is to take him or her to a registered therapist. If that is financially not viable, family members can help in such cases by consoling or listening to what the person has to say and patiently explain the reality. The first practical step to towards solving the condition is by identifying the cause for hysteria and approaching it with logic. Medicines are necessary to strengthen the mind and nervous system. Brain Rasayanas are effective in rejuvenating the brain and strengthening the logical functionalities of the brain effectively. In addition to medicines, psychological support is also necessary. Yoga, meditation and aromatherapy can help. Meditation allows the brain to release tension and rejuvenates the brain cells. It increases Prana energy in the body.

Health through devotion

Navratri is the beginning of the major festive season. There is happiness all around. The weather becomes mellow and the light chill in the wind gives people less reason to squint and sweat and more reasons to enjoy the outdoors and meet friends outdoor. But among all these fun and frolic, it is important to stay grounded and fasting is the best way to practise austerity and allow the body to connect with nature.

N

avratri is celebrated twice in a year. Once in the month of Chaitra (March/ April) and again during Sharad (October/November). The celebrations during Sharad is special. The entire nation celebrates this in their own cultural way with great pomp and gaiety. The most popular among these celebrations is Durga Puja, when the entire east India welcomes Goddess Durga to earth and worship her for freeing mankind from the clutches of evil. In Gujarat, people celebrate Garba and in central and northern India, this is the time for Navratri celebrations. One thing that connects Indians, irrespective of where they are in the country is the ritual of fasting. What is the reason for fasting during this time? Let’s take a look.

Benefits of fasting

Toxin elimination: Fasting allows the body to eliminate toxins. Of all organs, the liver is most benefited during a fast. The digestive system also works better on a lower load and this allows Agni to digest

ama and eliminate it. Digestion becomes strong: For most of us, our digestive systems never get rest. A complete digestion cycle takes 8 hours, during which we may have already eaten 5 times! So there is not time for the digestive system to complete digest the previous meal. Fasting strengthens digestion and the digestive fire. Reduces inflammation: Problems that are caused by inflammation of the joints, bones or muscles become less during a fast. Blood sugar balance: Fasting is beneficial for people with high blood sugar levels. In people who have low blood sugar, fasting is not recommended as this may lead to serious health problems. Improves Immunity: Fasting improves metabolism, which in turn helps in converting dhatus into Ojas – the essence of immunity. But again, there is a fine balance between fasting right and excessive fasting.

Kid’s Special DEEPER AYURVEDA

Childhood stress Childhood is that special time in life when everything is just so simple. There are no worries, just fun. Or is it? Children today are burdened by the pressure of performing from a very early age. They are expected to outshine their peers in sports, arts and studies. Young minds are not prepared to handle pressure, so when they reach preteens, they exhibit moodiness, violence or unsocial behaviour. Oct 2018 Paramayu

eing under pressure can be detrimental to the health of adults, more so for young children. This contributes to the ever-increasingly reported cases of childhood depression or teenage crimes and anti-social behaviour. Because of depression, children become inapt at concentrating on studies, aloof and uninterested in things that are normal for their age or exhibit deviant behaviours.

Reasons of stress in children There could be several reasons for childhood stress. Let us take a look at the several common reasons.

Physical ailments: Health issues during childhood can become a reason for stress in the long run for a child. This is not just limited to the child. If one or both of the parents are chronically ill for long periods of time, it may impact the child’s psyche too. A child’s mind is very impressionable, so when they see sadness, pain and depression around them, they reflect those too. Overuse of gadgets: An unsupervised child can become exposed to very bad things on the internet other than porn which can have a very deep impact on the way he or she thinks. Overtime, this scar can become bigger and more serious reason for psychological diseases. Pressure to be a good student: The first and most significant pressure a child experiences is when his or her parents expect high scores. By the age of 14, they are under too much pressure to score good marks, get admitted to a good school and get a high paying job. This is not healthy. Standards of living: In addition to the pressure of performing in stud-

26

ies, children are also under constant pressure to feel and be equal to other children, some of which can come from richer families. When they are around richer kids, they feel inferior and sometimes, they may have to endure insult. This leaves a deep scar on their young minds. This may be a problem even for adults, but children are more likely to be impacted by such childhood experiences. Working parents: A child needs support, so it is very important for one of the two parents to be around the child especially during the formative years.

A child's mind is not mature enough to handle pressure, but more worryingly, they are unable to express the effects on pressure on their psyche. So, while you may think that your child is an exception, he or she may be under life-altering pressure that will definitely rob their innocence and mirth, if not worse!

Kid’s Special DEEPER AYURVEDA

Symptoms of childhood stress In most cases, children and teenagers are not even aware when they begin slipping from stress towards depression. Children are unable to recognize their problem, or realize that they are under the spell of depression. Therefore, it becomes crucial for the parents to watch for signs and take remedial actions. Here are some physical signs that gives away the state of a child’s mental health. Dyspepsia, loss of appetite Headaches Bed wetting Nightmares Loss of sleep Stomach pain

How can parents help?

Parents are in the best situation to help their stressed child. At this young age, friends and peers are also way too young to recognize the signs of stress or depression. Hence it all comes down to the parents to see what their child are up to and act fast. If you are a parent, here are some things that you must be careful about: 1. Create a safe and secure household environment for the child. Abusive parents fighting in front of the child leaves deep scars. If you anticipate a heated argument, remove the child from the room. Both parent must understand the importance of a safe and secure home for a child to grow. If your spouse disregards this, sit down and have a serious discussion. If your spouse is incapable of understanding that, consult a counsellor. 2. Strictness should not smother

your child. Discipline is good, but strictness will make your child weak, unconfident and fearful of others. You must also consider the fact that your child will have to grow up and face a world that is largely unfair. Prepare your child for that. Excessive rebuking or physical punishments don’t do much good either. 3. Social connect is also vital in building a child’s social skills. You can arrange family get-together, picnics, sleepovers etc. that exposes them to others in the society. If your child has been asked by his or her friends to come visit them on their birthdays, do not prevent them. 4. Listen to what your child has to say. Often their problems are hidden in their mumbles. Encourage them to speak their mind. Unless you listen

to what your child has to say, you will not be able to give them sound advice. 5. Be mindful of what your child is doing. TV, computers, games, mobile phones, books, friends are all sources of information both good and bad. A close watch lets you anticipate troubles and prevent them. 6. Physical health is an often overlooked aspect of mental health in children. The act of playing games is very relaxing and rewarding for a child. Do not prevent your child from going out and having fun with their friends. But at the same time, teach them of the dangers of the playground. Often unsocial elements hang around playground to victimize kids. The best way is to oversee their sports and protect them while they enjoy. Oct 2018 Paramayu

Risk of excessive consumption Anything in excess, even good things can become harmful for the body. Although walnut is packed with nutrients, there are some direct harms of eating too many walnuts, either in a day or over a period of many days. Let’s take a look at those risks: Walnut increases Pitta, so it should not be consumed in summer or by people who have high Pitta dosha. You may be allergic to the oils or nutrients in walnut. If you observe pain, discomfort or swelling in the mouth or throat, difficulty in breathing – seek immediate medical attention and do not consume walnuts. If you have iron or zinc deficiency, consult your doctor before consuming walnuts. An ingredient known as phytic acid in walnuts can prevent the body from absorbing iron or zinc from food. Laughing reduces stress, blood pressure, makes your heart healthy and strengthens your immunity. Need more reasons? Laugh and find out yourself. 4. Stay active, physically and mentally: Do you play Sudoku or Crosswords? It’s never too late to start. Start with simple puzzles. Go to a kid’s store and try out a few puzzle books. You would never guess how satisfying it is for your brain to find answers to puzzles. Playing chess and other board games also work. Don’t spend all of your time solving puzzles, take some time to exercise and workout. 5. Say NO to negatives: The world is full of negativity, but it also has positivity, learn to seek positivity. Stress, anxiety, pointless criticism,

comparisons, and anger – all of these are bad for the mind’s beauty. When you face such situations, tackle them with positivity. 6. Sleep well: The brain is a powerhouse of activity, even when you are not working or doing something intellectually challenging, your mind is still working and trying to take care of things, without which you will probably die! So, the brain deserves some rest. Give yourself at least 7-8 hours of sleep. Some people sleep less than others, which is fine, but don’t force yourself to stay awake for movies, parties or silly cat videos on Facebook! 7. When did meditate last? : Meditation is like sunlight for sunflowers. It makes your brain ‘wake up’ in the true sense of the word. You do not have to be an expert. Just sit down in a peaceful place in peaceful, comfortable position and focus your mind on the breathing and how your mind moves. That will give your mind enough to focus on.

8. Do not put a lid on your emotions: Many of us are frightened of self-expression. If you have a thought or something that you want to say, express yourself. What happen at the worse, your opinions will not be heard, but that is better than keeping your thoughts inside you. But there are moments when it is smarter to not speak out. In such cases, it is better to just write them down in a notebook. Oct 2018 Paramayu

Astrological reasons of diseases

The fourth and fifth expressions of the birth chart which deals with emotions, logic and relationships, becomes influenced by sins and this leads to psychological problems. The Moon is the ruling astronomical body that controls the mind. When the Moon is positioned in a powerful position, it makes the person mentally and psychologically active and intelligent. On the contrary when it is positioned in a weak position, it becomes the cause of mental and psychological disorders. Jupiter is the ruling planet of intellect, it is responsible for sending emotional stimulus to the brain. Saturn rules the nerves and increase of Vata in the nerves mean a problem with the action of Saturn. If the Moon or Jupiter is in a weak position, then treatment and medicines do not act properly. If both of these are severely affected then the chances of psychological disorders become high. There are different types of psychological disorders, but here are the most common psychological disorders: Phobias, Depression, and Schizophrenia.

Phobias

Phobia is a problem when a person suffers from illogical fear and anxiety, so much so that the person becomes startled by his or her own shadow or the slightest sound. Phobias usually start when a person has been through a traumatic experience in the past.

Ayurvedic explanation of phobias:

1. Phobias happen if the lagna or lagnesh is weak and the Moon and Jupiter are in the central sin position 2. Mars symbolizes courage and victory. If this is positioned in a lower position then the person becomes fearful and easily scared. 3. The combination of Jupiter and Saturn also makes a person more fearful.

AYUR Life Panchakarma

virechan In addition to food, our mouths take in a lot of dirt, dust and other things that ar simply not supposed to be ingested. Germs, pesticides, chemicals and general pollutants that go inside the system are too much for the body to digest or eliminate. Over time, this starts accumulating inside the body and creates a toxic environment. The only way to get rid of this is through detoxification. Panchakarma defines a specific karma (process) for this purpose, and it is known as Virechan.

Purpose of Virechan

Digestion has a crucial role in keeping the body healthy. Good digestion is fundamental to all functions working properly and without any glitch. This is essential in forming Dhatus and Ojas. But none of this can happen if digestion is not working properly due to the presence of toxins in the intestines. Hence, in this process, Ayurvedic medicines are used to remove toxins from the body through the anal route. In Ayruvedic treatment, this is an important treatment therapy.

When is the best time for Virechan

Ayurveda experts believe that the Sharad Ritu is the best time for undergoing Virechan. During this time, the body accumulates a lot of toxins which start from the monsoon season and gradually keeps on increasing over time. This is the reason why this season is considered the best time to undergo the Virechan process.

psychological diseases and Ayurveda We all know that the state of your body has a direct impact on the mind, and likewise the state of the mind has a direct impact on the body too. Ayurveda, considers the state of both the body and the mind while treating diseases. Mind is the link between the sense organs and the brain. This is what processes the information flowing in through the senses and converts it into knowledge. Without the sense organs, the mind would become useless.

The reason behind psychological diseases

When we are born, we have all three gunas – Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. One of these gunas can be slightly more than the other two depending on the diet and lifestyle of our parents, but this begins to change as we grow older and our mind becomes developed to process inputs form sense organ. What we see, listen and experience in life becomes the basis of our innate nature. If the mind observes a lot of positives, Sattvic elements, it eventually becomes Sattvic. Likewise, with negative inputs, the mind processes those and makes you either Rajasic or Tamasic. People who develop psychological problems are mostly of Tamasic or Rajasic qualities. When a person with either of these personalities face adversities in life, they tend to seek the wrong path of reaching their goals, or even when they are treading on the right path their minds are not in the ideal state to solve the problem. Hence they become stressed, anxious and in the long run diseased. There are fewer exceptions such as genetic

predisposition or physical or emotional trauma. Majority of the other cases are a result of a Rajasic or Tamasic mind.
