President’s Message The skin is the largest organ in the body. It covers the entire body and has multiple important functions, most importantly of protecting the body against disease causing germs. Skin is the first line of defence against germs, it gives us the faculty of sensation. We feel touch, warmth, cold, pain and pleasure through our skin. Skin also gives us identity. The colour of our skin (varna) is a part of our ancestry and we must be proud of it.
Panchakarma is often mistaken as an exclusive process for diseased people, but the truth is that any person can benefit from Panchakarma.
It is important that we take special care of this important organ. Ayurveda has a very beautiful process known as Abhayanga which takes care of the skin on the entire body. Take a few minutes every day to massage the entire body with some sesame oil. Allow the body 10-15 minutes to absorb the oil and then take a bath. If you do not have the time for a daily massage, at least do so once every week. This will protect your skin from common skin problems like dryness, inflammation, itching, and roughness. It will also strengthen the muscles, nerves and joints as well as promote good circulation throughout the body. Panchakarma is also a very useful process to eliminate toxins from the body. This wonderful system of Ayurvedic massage is often mistaken as an exclusive process for diseased people, but the truth is that any person can benefit from Panchakarma. In fact, once in every 3 to 4 months you must
undertake a Panchakarma session to flush out toxins from the body, strengthens the immune system and makes you feel overall fit and healthy. Your diet also plays a very important role in how your skin looks. But first understand the Ayurvedic type of your skin. It is very essential to understand what food will be the best for you. Vata type people usually have dull and dry skin, pitta type skin is sweaty, prone to acne and blemishes, while Kapha type skin is moist and problems like clogged skin and eczema are common in this type of skin. When you eat according to your dosha not only do you keep your skin healthy, you also prevent diseases that are triggered by imbalanced dosha. Today, either because of wrong diets (virudh-ahaar), overuse of chemical-based cosmetics or other factors, skin diseases are becoming very common. Ayurveda is very effective in both preventing as well as treating skin diseases. Follow Ayurveda for overall beauty and good health. If you would like to share your personal experiences and thoughts on this topic, feel free to write in to me at rishi@jiva.com

Vitiligo The Ayurvedic Perspective, Remedies & Treatment
Dr Partap Chauhan
The Indian society is burdened by countless social dogmas. Some have deep logics and meanings to them, but in most cases, these dogmas arise out of false notions and myths. A very common problem is leukoderma. People think that this is a disease caused by bad karma of the previous life. Ayurveda takes a very stoic and practical stand on the matter. Let’s learn more.

Paramayu Apr 2018
Vitiligo is a disease that people do not often pay much heed at the initial stage. White spots are often overlooked because they do not cause any pain or discomfort to the patient. As time goes by, these white spots increase in size and cover more area on the body, especially the face, lips, thighs and arms. In other parts of the body, white patches do not cause any problem, but when they begin to appear on the face gossips begin and that causes embarrassment. At any age, this disease can lead to inferiority complex in the person. Certain steroidal drugs may seem to solve the problem for a while, but it leads to other problems like thinning of the skin, itching or formation of hard surfaces on the area of application. The explanation behind white spots in Vitiligo According to modern science, the white spots appear when the melanocytes become damaged. Melanocytes prepare melanin the substance that gives us the colour of our skin and protects us from harmful UV radiation. When the melanocytes do not
produce melanin, it leads to white spots or patches. Reasons of white spots on the skin • Consuming incompatible foods (virrudh-ahar) is a reason of white spot formation. Irregular meal timings, eating stale or old meats etc are also considered reasons of leukoderma. Eating incompatible foods creates impurities in blood (rakta dhatu) and this affects the skin, hence white spots are formed. • Presence of worms in the gut, or fungal infection on the skin can also lead to formation of white spots on the skin. • Chronic constipation or weak digestion is also among the recognized causes of vitiligo. • Vitiligo can also be caused of genetic reasons. • Excessive stress, mental anxiety impairs digestion and over time this can also lead to vitiligo • Hormonal imbalances caused hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism could also be the reason of white spots.

Symptoms of white spots • Small, white dots begin to appear on the ankles and spread over the entire limb. • Premature greying or whitening of hair Ayurvedic Explanation of Vitiligo Ayurveda considers the reason of vitiligo and leprosy to be the same. There are different names of this disease in Ayurveda. The primary reason described in Ayurveda is vitiation of all three doshas, but the primary dosha that is out of balance is Pitta. There are five different types of Pitta in the body and one of them, Bhrajak Pitta is responsible for the pigmentation of skin. This Pitta subtype is responsible for many functions such as improving the texture and sheen of the skin and protecting it against the pathogens and germs in environment. When Bhrajak Pitta goes out of balance, it creates impurities in the Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa and Lasika. All of these together contribute to damaging the melanocytes on skin. Ayurvedic treatment focuses on pacifying the doshas first and then eliminating the toxins, both of which will together contribute to recalibrating the natural function of these melanin creating cells.
Diet and Lifestyle Advices • Prefer wholegrains over refined or packaged grains. Prepare or purchase flour from wholegrains. • Avoid sour foods, fruits and pickles if you have white spots on the skin. • Minimize the use of non-veg food items. You may also consult with your doctor to know more about the right diet for vitiligo. • Minimize the use of alcohol, coffee, tea or eggs – these increase body heat and cause more imbalance to pitta dosha. • Add more neem in your diet. You can chew a few fresh leaves every day or mix 2 teaspoons of neem juice in a glass of water and drink in the morning.
Leukoderma is skin disease in which the skin becomes discoloured at places and white patches appear. In some cases, this is described as leprosy. Home remedies • Store water in a copper vessel overnight and drink it the next day. This will be help your melanocytes function normally and reduce white spots. • In 5 tsp turmeric mix 250 ml mustard oil and apply on affected area twice every day. For good results apply this remedy for 1 year every day. • In 2 tsp garlic juice mix the pulp of hartaki (Terminalia chebula) and apply on the affected area. • Use the leaves of Bathua to extract juice and apply on the affected area. • Don’t scratch with your nails if spots become itchy. Keep your bowels clear.

ur skin is equally important as other body are like heart, lungs etc. Therefore it is equally important to take care of the skin.
Understand the integral part of the skin
Emotions and Skin Relation Clean, soft and beautiful skin is not gifted to everybody. There are very few people who have a fair, beautiful, spotless skin without any patches or scars. Some have acne, blemishes, spots and scars on their skin, these problems are not just because of external factors but also emotional reasons.
The skin is the largest and sensitive part of the body. This is one of the sensory centers through which we make the knowledge of touch. The skin between all the organs of the body is unique because it is connecting us with the external world. All parts of our body work in a balanced and secure environment, where the temperature is not more than 37 degrees Celsius. Skin protects us in every kind of environment and in order to do this, it is able to withstand the temperature of the dry desert from extreme cold.
Emotions and its relation with the skin
Not only mental but also physically, our skin is connected to the external world with a limit. To understand and respond to the outside world, the skin is closely related to the nervous system, which is related to the body control center i.e. the brain. Due to this connection, the effects on the skin Apr 2018 Paramayu

are also affected by our emotional progress. According to the Sankhya philosophy, the skin is related to air, which is also the air, which is also related to Anahata or heart chakra, which is the place of emotions. Thus, it is seen that the skin changes according to our emotions, such as when our face shines during happiness and is faded when we are unhappy.
Scars and spots on the skin are a reason for emotional tensions and stress that one is going through. As long as we don’t come out of our personal emotional tensions till the skin depurates.
Words are also important
Today, modern medicine has also accepted the connection between brain and body proved by Ayurveda thousands of years ago. Because the skin has a special relationship with our nervous system, it also has emotional and health effects. The word “bintu” is derived from the word “Sanskrit”, which means skin. Apart from this, Varnashram, which is derived from the word Varnaashram, is also the same, that personality can become automatically by nature.
Relation of skin and emotions
Many skin related problems such as hives, itching, wart, eczema etc. are related to the person can be linked to emotional aspects too. Even if the problem is due to any other reason such as physical, hereditary or infections, then its solution is only control over emotions. The skin has its own distinct emotional world, which is filled with emotions. She also laughs; she is crying and even moaned with pain. The following relationships have been found in the skin’s effects and emotions in modern medicine. Emotions Skin connection Anger or Anxiety- Hives, Allergies, Itching, Swelling Increased Stress- Redness And Rashes

Painful Incident - Exima or Psoriasis, Acne Chronic Stress- Rashes and Redness Depression Dryness, Lethargy Old Chronic - Sensitivity, Stress Dehydration, Dryness Strained Anger- Dryness Suppose you cannot eliminate the problems caused by heredity or fungal infections such as watts or herpes, but by staying away from stress, you can definitely reduce these problems to a great extent. Understand the skin By closing the tendency to blame ourselves, we can get rid of skin related problems to a great extent. This is a great way to remove skin diseases. Skin symptoms show your mental state. In such a situation, you should try to understand the signs of the skin
and find out the weak weaknesses within them, find their solution. The use of only drug or cosmetic products can spoil the situation.
Treatment in Ayurveda
Ayurveda physicians also try to identify the hidden emotions along with related causes before treating skin diseases. To know that skin diseases are due to emotional reason, pay attention to the following thingsDo symptoms appear on skin only when emotional problems occur? Changes in the social environment also change what symptoms? Is there any cure that cannot prove to be effective or is it not for a long time? Second symptoms appear as a symptom? If so, try to know and remove your emotional weakness. Believe that the medicines will prove to be more effective at the time.

These diseases are transmitted from one infected person to the next. Common sexually transmitted diseases: Both males and females are equally likely to be affected by sexually transmitted diseases. Here are some of the most common STDs. Syphilis: This disease is caused by a
bacteria known as Treponema pallidum. Patients suffering from this disease experience painful sores in the mouth or rectum. Childhood Memories of Monsoon and Health A famous bard once sang, “Take away all of my wealth and take away my achievements, but let me relive those precious years of my childhood. Once again let me sail my paper boats in the rain stream flowing by my childhood home”. Today we, parents, are overprotective of our children and prevent them from coming in contact with the rain, but did you know that coming in contact with the rain has many health benefits – physical and emotional?
What different should you do this monsoon?
Let your children play in the rain. Most children today are deeply engrossed in their TV programmes, video games and mobile phones. There is very little incentive for them to go out and see the rain, experience the reinvigorating transition of nature from being parched to becoming inundated with water and
24

gaze at the joy of nature coming to life after the showers.
How is this going to benefit your child?
When the drops of rain fall on the skin, it does a few things to the body, mind and soul: • It reduces acid levels in the body since rain water is alkaline • The mind becomes calmer and the body gets de-stressed • The smell of rain has a calming effect on the body and mind • It clears the air of dust, dander and pollution, so the air becomes fresh to breathe • Rain water has no chemicals, so it is good for the hair • Precautions • The air in cities is heavy with pollutants, so there are a few precautions that you can take to make things healthier for your kid.
•
Wait for 10-15 minutes after the rain starts to allow the dust and pollutants to be washed down to the earth. • A good spell of 15-20 minutes of enjoying the rain is enough for your child to get all the benefits. Staying wet for too long can make them catch a cold. • Have your child take a bathe and shampoo the hair afterwards. Once you have taken your bath, serve something healthy and enjoy the rain pitter-pattering outside.

Dab the affected spot with a cotton swab dipped in Sandalwood oil. 8. Keep the nails of your child welltrimmed so that there is no adverse effect of itching. You can also take the additional precaution of putting on socks or light mittens on the hands so that the nails don’t come in direct contact with the bumps. 9. Make sure to wash all of your child’s clothes with antiseptic liquid and dry them under the sun. Keep clothes separate, especially if you have another child at home, this is necessary to stop the infection from spreading. AYUR Life
Water The Basis of Life The human body is made of five cardinal elements. Ayurveda as well as religious scripture mention of the presence and role of these five elements. For the sustenance of life, all five of these basic elements must be maintained in the right balance. Water and air are the most vital of these elements. 28
Paramayu Apr 2018
A
lmost 60% of the human body is made of water. So, if you weigh 70 kilograms, about 40 litres of it is water. This makes it amply clear that water is very essential for survival and existence. As soon as the amount of water begins to drop the body sends a signal to the brain, which triggers the sensation of thirst. Lack of potable water has led to countless conflicts, especially in the Middle East and Africa. The United Nations and World Trade Centre has special units that look into proper management of water resources and to manage conflicts. So vital is the role of water for survival of human civilizations that many think the next big war will be fought over water. So what does Ayurveda say about water? Let’s find us.
Types of water according to Ayurveda
Three fourth of the earth is covered in water. It is found in different states, for instance, water is present as vapour in the clouds, in liquid form it is in the seas, oceans and rivers, in the solid form it is on mountain tops as ice. In Ayurveda, water is broadly classified in two groups: Divya (transcendental) and Vyom (terrestrial), these are further divided into several subtypes. Divya water has four forms, viz; • Dhaar jal • Kar jal • Toshar jal • Hem jal
AYUR Life
Dhaar jal Dhaar jal is considered the most beneficial among all forms of water. Dhaar jal has two further subtypes - Ganga jal and Samudra jal. To establish the purity of water, there is a very simple way. Take a bowl of rice and put the water you want to test, and bring it to a boil. If the colour and state of the rice does not change, then the water is clean, if the rice becomes dirty or smells foul then the water is not clean. Ganga jal is considered to be pure. Among its many properties, Ganga jal is light, cool, digestive, improves cognitive functions, and heals conditions like loss of consciousness, burning sensation and fatigue. On the other hand, Samudra jal has opposite properties, for example it induces thirst, damages vision, mental faculties and energy. Samudra jal should be avoided for internal uses.
Kar jal
This is the form of water that comes down from the skies accompanied by lighting and strong gusts of winds. In most cases this comes down in a solid state and is known as hailstones. It is harmful for humans and all forms of flora and fauna. Kar jal is very cold and
aggravates Vata-Pitta if consumed.
Toshar jal
Potable water is known as Toshar jal. It is light, clean and has the potential to balance Pitta, Kapha and other diseases in the human body. Ayurveda recommends this form of water all purposes of consumption and preparing food.
Hem jal
The water which melts down from glaciers and ice caps on mountains is known as Hem jal. Hem jal is light, sweet, pure and is known to relieve discomfort in many diseases. In skin diseases, bleeding disorders, indigestion, depression and other psychological problems. In addition to the four forms of Diviya jal, there are three forms of Vyom jal: • Jangal • Anup • Sadharan
Jangal jal
Water found in dry, arid areas where there are no trees is known as Jangal jal. People inhabiting these areas suffer from Pitta and Rakta related diseases. Jangal water is salty, rough and
Everything alive in nature needs water to survive. Plants, animals, human beings, even the microscopic organisms need water to live. Water is present in different forms all around us. light. This form of water strengthens digestive fire and has the potential to heal indigestion. However, in excessive amounts this can be harmful to the human body.
Aanup jal
Geographical areas that have an abundance of trees is known as Aanup and the water available in that area is known as Aanup jal. This type of water is delicious and substantial, however in excessive amounts this water can become a reason for weak digestion.
Sadharan jal
Normally, water that flows regularly without any obstruction is known as Sadharan jal. Water sourced from underground reserves or from clean rivers is known as Sadharan jal. It is effective in reducing thirst, burning sensation, fatigue, vomiting, balance all three doshas. As far as Vyom jal is concerned it is sourced from wells, lakes, ponds and other similar sources. According to the location, the qualities of Vyom jal is different.

T
he human skin is a 2 square metres flexible film that covers the entire body from the head to toes. In addition to protecting the musculature, bones, ligaments and tendons, the skin also maintains our body temperature even when the environment gets cooler or hotter. It also assists the toxin elimination mechanism of the body and maintains the balance of salts in blood. Skin is sensitive to the impulses of pressure, temperature, touch and pain which is why it sends signals to the brain and forms an important part of the body’s defence mechanism. The skin is also a part of the nutrition system of the body which draws vitamin D from the sun rays which is then used by the body to mix with calcium and form bones which is the basis of the body structure. In Ayurvedic diagnosis and treatment, doctors depend a lot on the symptoms they gather from the skin. Whenever there is a disease in the body, the first signs begin to appear on the skin. Disease of the liver, abdomen, nervous system, hormonal imbalance etc. first become clear on the skin. Red marks on the skin, purple discoloration or spots, white spots or repeatedly occurring boils or pimples on the skin may be indicative of some serious disease. Skin diseases are usually caused by when the rakta dosha becomes impure. Ayurveda reckons that skin diseases occur when the pitta and the three doshas become imbalanced. Indian astrology considers the Budh planet (Mercury) the origin of skin diseases. This is a tridoshic planet. A person who has Budh planet strongly
in their birth chart is more likely to have beautiful skin. In case a person has the planet in the wrong position or is displeased, then the person become prone to the risk of skin diseases. Bacterial and fungal disorders are commonly reported by people who have the mercury planet in the wrong position. A person’s lagna and the master planet has a complete command over the person’s health, including the skin. Mars is the guardian planet of fire or Pitta. So, it must be noted that if Mars is displeased on an individual then the blood becomes impure and due to this skin diseases can happen. According to Ayurveda, there are different types of skin diseases. Some
of them are dryness of skin, pimples & itching. Kustha roga is also a type of skin disease mentioned in Ayurveda. Let us discuss a little about Kustha roga. This is somewhat similar to Leprosy in western medicine, there are two diseases that match this diseases viz: Sweta Kustha and Krishna Kustha. Sweta Kustha does not have any resemblance to leprosy and is more like a skin disease.

Enjoy the monsoons with a
cob of corn
The combination of season and diet is very important. Ayurveda mentions the significance of eating according to seasons to prevent diseases. In winters, gajar ka halwa (a sweet dish made of carrots and milk) is a favourite delicacy and in monsoons when the droplets of rain starts pitter-pattering on the window sills, a roasted cob of corn is the healthiest delicacy you can get. 34
