In ancient India, the fundamental principle of family was not based on economic development or material enjoyment but devotion to the Supreme, the source of all creation. But why Indian family values are eroding, explains Dr. Satyanarayana Dasa.
Charity
Deeper Ayurveda
C
harity begins at home is an old adage but this charity is very much missing in our homes at present. Family is the foundation and core of any society since society is in itself a combination of many family units. Sadly, but truly, the current problems of the society are rooted in the unit called the family. In Sanskrit, there is a law called sthali-pulaka nyaya, 'the law of rice in a pot'. If you want to check whether the rice is cooked or not, just take few grains from the cooking pot and check them by pressing with your fingers. Similarly, the plight of a society is known by studying a few families. Whether you live in America or in India, the family is the building block of any society or nation. Though we give much importance to economic development, community development, disease eradication, drug control, animal protection, environmental conservation and others, there is no institution or project to save the family, the very foundation of society. There are colleges and universities to study all types of subjects except an institution to train how to lead a healthy and happy family life.

Family relationships are tense and are devoid of love, therefore having a good time, taking drugs and drinking will not give you any satisfaction Charity & Happiness – Both Begins at Home
The Erosion of Indian Family Values
We still seek happiness like we use to do in the past, but modern society does not honour the fact that it comes from a loving and caring family. According to Stephen R Covey, author of the bestseller book 'The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People', happiness is a 'homemade' product and you can't get it elsewhere. Partying, going for a holiday, taking drugs or alcohol, shopping and living in luxury will not satisfy you if there is strife, tension and disharmony in your family relations. This is definitely true in today’s world where family members are often at odds with each other and do not have the time and energy to sympathise or empathise with each other. During the earlier days, due to the presence of a joint family system this problem was not acute, but nowadays with nucleus families becoming in vogue this problem has accentuated to a great deal.
The Indian family system is gradually seeing an erosion of values. In the past one century, the political, economical and social situation of India, the birthplace of the institution called the family has changed drastically. The fundamental principle of family in the Vedic age was based on the Supreme Power, the very source of creation. The family was the building block of this society. The primary purpose of the family was not economic development or material enjoyment, but devotion to the Supreme. Everything else was arranged around this fundamental principle. It may sound preposterous to the modern mind, but it is a principle that has stood the test of time successfully for centuries. All the Hindu ceremonies, the rituals, festivals etc. were propagated with this one single principle in mind. We can still feel a trace of it in the Indian festivals and rituals, today.
A child is not born with a stressful mind. The mind becomes polluted and burdened as the child grows in a disturbed and disharmonious family. If relations are affectionate and nurturing, then family members will have a balanced personality. The members of such a family carry an aura of peace and their mood spill into all other aspects of their life. The contrary is also true. We can give to others only what we have. If we are disturbed in our family life, we will carry that negative energy everywhere and infect whomever we meet. Young people, who usually lacks discrimination, is easily influenced by this negative energy, which they seek to cure by taking drugs, alcohol, being violent and indulging in highly risky behaviour.

Problems like premature ejaculation can really affect a man's confidence and can lead to an unsatisfactory marital life. Ayurveda can be a man's real friend in such a stage and help him restore his manhood and confidence without the harmful sideeffects of many drugs.

The purpose of marriage was not just to enjoy sex but to become partners and assistants in the act of devotion to the Supreme. This being the case, the individual egos and prides naturally took a second position. Cooperation is not possible without a common goal. As we see at present, the individual members of a family have different aims in life and thus there is no harmony. It is like a cart harnessed by many horses each pulling in different directions; or a boat being rowed by different members without any coordination. Families whose members have a common goal put up with each other just for sake of business. The only thing which can unite the family together, and then the society is devotion to the Supreme Person or God. Oct 2014 – Paramayu – 23

To protect your child from allergies, you need to ensure that the following things are done: & Strengthen the child's ojas & Maintain balance of doshas in child's body & Ensure that the child's digestive fire remains strong enough to digest food
Ayurvedic View: From Ayurvedic point of view, allergies reflect imbalanced immunity levels. The factors that hold significance in this context are ojas, doshas and agni.
Ojas: According to Ayurveda allergies are caused by low ojas. Ojas is the essence of all body tissues which are prepared with special chain of metabolism. Low ojas causes imbalance of doshas and your child becomes prone to allergies and allergic reactions.

Cleanse your real home
this Diwali!
Diwali is a time when you put all your efforts in cleaning, tidying and beautifying your home and surroundings. But, don't forget to go for a short internal cleansing as well— after all, your body is your real home.
T
he festive season is on. Diwali is round the corner. In India, this festival holds a lot of significance; it is more than fancy lights, sweets, gifts and crackers, it is a time when families bond together to share love, camaraderie and happiness. As Diwali approaches people generally tend to put their health in the back burner. Ayurveda experts believe that this is the right time for you to go for an internal cleansing, including cleaning your body, mind and spirit. For what is the use of all the cleanliness and beauty of the outer environment, when you are not clean and beautiful inside? Below are some tips that will help you enjoy this Diwali in a new spirit and make the best of this wonderful festival.
Follow a Detox Diet Eat ama-reducing foods. Go for vegetables that are light, warm and freshly cooked. Eat freshly made chapattis (rotis), dal soups, leafy green vegetables, spices and whole grains. Avoid foods such as leftovers, packaged, fermented, canned and frozen foods. Eat fruits such as figs, apples, pears, pineapple and papaya.
Abhyanga Abhyanga, a full body massage, helps loosens deeply-embedded impurities, allowing them to flow into the digestive tract, from where they can be easily eliminated through the bowel. Go for abhyanga massage with a trained Panchakarma doctor and specialist. You can call 0129-4040404 for details.
Panchakarma Therapy (internal cleansing) While it is good to follow a detoxifying diet and oil massage, it is also important to cleanse the toxins which are seated at deeper levels in our body. Ayurveda suggests Panchakarma treatments such as vamana (induced vomiting), virechana (purgation) and vasti (medicated enema) for deeper cleansing. In addition to deep physical cleansing, we should also focus on cleansing the mind and the sub conscious mind. Breathing exercises, pranayama, observing silence (maun), meditation, prayers, and chanting mantras are simple ways to cleanse our subtle parts. Do not forget that we all are souls and we live in this body. It is our home. So while we clean our houses this Diwali, do not forget to clean the 'real house' in which we live. ates are known to be a favourite among fruitarians (people who solely survive on fruits). It contains 15 minerals and 23 types of amino acids, as well as unsaturated fatty acids. Studies done on dates have concluded that it could be considered almost a complete food since it contains a wide range of essential nutrients. Date is also a preferred fruit, especially among Indian women, during days of fasting. But, its high nutritional content also warrants it a place in our daily diet. The sadhus and sanyasis of India have long since included dates in their diet because of its sattvic and nutritious nature. Dates can meet most of the nutritional needs of an individual and is also recommended for people aiming to lose weight. Dates contain more complex carbohydrates than most fruits, meaning its sugars break down slowly and release energy gradually into the body. Thus, it can be included as a part of the diet while treating obesity, because it satisfies sweet cravings and provides essential carbohydrates without being fattier like icecream, sweets and chocolates. Dates, however, are not recommended for diabetics because of its high sugar content.

How are dates beneficial The therapeutic, nutritional and nourishing properties of dates have been elaborately described in Ayurveda texts. Foods that are sweet to taste are usually known to pacify vata and pitta while increasing kapha. However, dates are an exception to this rule since they pacify vata and pitta without increasing kapha. Regular consumption of this fruit balances vata, provides good nutrition to the tissues without causing excess weight gain. Due to its unctuous property, it protects the body from dryness and makes the tissues soft and strong.

as this ever happened with you, that you were all dressed up for a party and was ready to spray that expensive new perfume you had bought, and then suddenly after a while your body is filled with rashes? This is a common occurrence with people who are prone to skin allergies. While some people are chronically allergic, there are thousands of people who experience allergies at one time or another in life. Though allergies can manifest themselves in a variety of manners, a large number of allergies make their presence felt on skin. Women and children are more prone to skin allergies because there skin is sensitive. Women are especially terrified of this problem because it can seriously damage their looks.
Overcoming
Skin Allergies 30 – Paramayu – Oct 2014
Many people are allergic to a few things and few are allergic to many things. Some of the things that causes skin allergies in women include fabrics, soaps, shampoos, detergents, perfumes, deodorants, nail paint, lipstick, skin lotions, cleansing milk, masks, creams and other things that include chemicals. However, some women are subjected to allergies from something harmless such as sunlight, flowers, change in temperature, and exposure to metal, dust, pollen and plants. Apart from these, some food items and medications too can cause allergies that manifest themselves on the skin. If a contact with a particular thing causes rashes, swelling or itching on your skin, then it's possible that you are allergic to that thing. Such reactions can cause a variety of skin allergies such as allergic dermatitis, eczema, etc.
What Ayurveda says about skin allergies? The fact that insect bites or some environmental factors can generate strange skin reactions was observed by Ayurveda thousands of year ago. So Ayurvedic texts have discussed such conditions quite well. Such allergic conditions have been given various names like sheetapitta, koth, udarda and utkoth in Ayurveda. The imbalance of doshas is of course responsible for such skin allergies but the factors that play important role in such pathologies are: Bhrajak Pitta: This is a subtype of pitta dosha and it resides in skin. Bhrajak pitta is responsible for complexion, luster and quality of skin. Allergens that are capable of vitiating bhrajak pitta can cause skin allergies. Appearance of rashes and change in colour of skin. Rasa dhatu: This plasma like fluid that hydrates the entire skin is very mild, watery and cooling in properties. Allergens trigger release of some chemicals in body. If these chemicals mix with rasa dhatu, then rasa dhatu becomes corrosive and affects the skin leading to allergic reactions. Appearance of itch and scales generally indicate vitiation of rasa dhatu. Rakta dhatu: Blood is very closely associated with skin. Ayurveda has described the delicate balance of five elements (Ether, wind, fire, water & earth) seen in blood. The chemicals released by allergens can disturb this balance which then gets reflected on skin in the form of allergic reactions. Rashes, redness and swelling indicate impairment of rakta dhatu. No matter which allergen has caused you the skin allergy, your Bhrajak pitta, Rasa &
Rakta dhatus need correction to cure the problem. In some patients agni might be also disturbed and therefore requires attention.Herbs such as manjistha, amla, kamadudha, guduchi and turmeric are helpful in skin allergies.
How to avoid skin allergies? -Be careful while choosing soaps, cosmetics, detergents, perfumes and oils. As far as possible, try to opt for herbal and organic products. Read the label before you buy and try cosmetics, soaps and perfume on a small part of your skin if you are prone to skin allergies.
Wear clothes according to season. Avoid tight clothes and clothes made of synthetic material. Avoid sour foods, tomatoes, pickles, fermented items, tea, coffee, alcohol and nonvegetarian foods because they tend to aggravate pitta and impair rasa and rakta dhatus.
-Apply make up only when it is really necessary and do not keep it on face for too long. Consume grains, vegetables, salads, pulses with less oil and spices Avoid staying for too long in air-conditioned, humid, hot or unhygienic surroundings Oct 2014 – Paramayu – 31

How it works? Since oil is supposed to be the prime agent for pacifying vata dosha in Ayurveda, it plays a pivotal role in treatment of most of the joint diseases caused by vata dosha. Warm oil kept stagnant on knee joint in this therapy penetrates into the deeper joint tissues, lubricates the joint, nourishes the synovial fluid and pacifies the aggravated vata dosha. Repeated sessions of the therapy rejuvenate the joint tissues and repair wear and tear suffered by the joint.
Method: To perform this therapy, the patient is asked to lie down on
therapy table. A dough is prepared by mixing sufficient amount of water in chana dal flour. A thick wall is constructed using this dough around the knee joint where the therapy is to be performed. Then, warm medicated oil is poured slowly in this constructed reservoir and allowed to remain there until it's warm enough. When the oil starts cooling down, it is replaced by warm oil. This process is repeated for 20 to 45 minutes.
