STRESS and Its Effect on Physical Systems

Stress is a universal problem that affects all of us at some point in our lives. Learning to identify when you are under stress, what is causing it, and how you can cope with it can greatly improve both your mental and physical well-being.

S

tress is the body's way of responding to any kind of demand, and can be brought on by both good and bad experiences. When people are stressed by something, their body reacts by releasing chemicals into the blood, which gives them more energy and strength. This can be a good thing if it happens occasionally; however, if you take on stress too frequently, you will end up feeling weak and drained.

EFFECT OF STRESS ON DIFFERENT PHYSICAL SYSTEMS MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM When the body is stressed, the muscles tense up. This muscle tension is almost a reflex reaction, the body's defence mechanism against injury and pain. When muscles are tensed for a prolonged period of time, they may release harmful chemicals into the blood, causing pain, stiffness, sprains, and other related disorders in the affected part of the body.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Stress makes breathing fast and irregular and the airways become constricted. This may trigger dyspnoea, asthma, emphysema, or other lung diseases, where it becomes difficult to breathe properly due to lack of oxygen. 6 – Paramayu – Jul 2016

Sympathetic nervous system response is fairly sudden. It prepares the body to react in a dangerous condition or acute stress. Body shifts all its energy resources toward fighting against a life threat or fleeing from an enemy.

CARDIOVASCULAR Repeated acute stress and persistent chronic stress may also contribute to inflammation in the circulatory system (particularly the coronary arteries), paving the way for a heart attack. Stress can also affect cholesterol levels, increase the heart rate, and lead to irregular spasms in the heart muscles.

ENDOCRINE When you’re stressed, the hypothalamus signals the autonomic nervous system and the pituitary gland, which then start to produce stress hormones like adrenaline, epinephrine, and cortisol.

GASTROINTESTINAL Stress affects not only the digestion process, but also the absorption of nutrients. This can lead to a variety of symptoms like repeated acidity, flatulence, pain, abdominal discomfort, nausea, mouth ulcers, diarrhoea, and constipation.

NERVOUS SYSTEM Autonomic nervous system has a direct role to play in the physical response to stress. Sympathetic nervous system response is fairly sudden. It prepares the body to react in a dangerous condition or acute stress. Body shifts all its energy resources toward fighting against a life threat or fleeing from an enemy.

CAUSES OF STRESS

Stress can be brought on by many factors, ranging from the physical (such as fear of something dangerous) to the emotional (such as worrying about the family or stability of your job). Some of the most common triggers of stress are: 1. SURVIVAL STRESS You may have heard the phrase "fight or flight" . This is a common response to danger that is exhibited by people and animals alike. It prepares your body to either face danger or run from it.

2. INTERNAL STRESS Some people develop the habit of living a hurried, tense lifestyle that results from being under stress. Sometimes, they look for stressful situations and take on stress about things that may not even be stressful.

3. ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS

REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

This is a response to things around you that cause stress, such as noise, crowds, and work or family pressure.

In men, chronic stress can affect testosterone production and sperm production and maturation. It can even lead to erectile dysfunction or impotence.

4. FATIGUE AND OVERWORK

Among women, high levels of stress may be associated with absent or irregular menstrual cycles, worsening premenstrual symptoms, more painful periods and changes in the length of cycles, disturbed menopausal phase with increased complications, or conception related problems. As you can see, stress is like a silent saboteur that enters our life unseen and wreaks untold havoc on it, if not controlled. 8 – Paramayu – Jul 2016

This kind of stress builds up over a long period of time and can take a toll on your body. It can be caused by working too hard at home or office and is one of the hardest kinds of stress to avoid because many people feel this is out of their control.

or nature to function properly, it is imperative that all its essential elements work in harmony. Not following a well-balanced approach virtually guarantees negative side effects. Everyone plays a role in this, but man is especially important because, in comparison to all other animals that rely on their instincts, man depends on his intellect!

Meaning of Life To fully understand stress, it is essential to first understand life. According to Ayurveda, life is not just a combination of various organs and bodily systems, like blood, digestion, breathing, etc. It's a complex composition that consists of 24 elements, including the mind, the senses, the intellect, and the soul. Stress can have an adverse effect on all of them. However, stress can also develop if there is an imbalance in these components of the body.

The Mind: A Treasure Trove of Ideas

AYURVEDA AND STRESS — Dr. Partap Chauhan 10 – Paramayu – Jul 2016

The mind is the master of all senses. It helps you execute day-to-day actions (like thinking, meditating, concentrating, and taking decisions) by using a combination of various internal processes. Of all this, probably the most important function is the production, retention, and perpetuation of thoughts. It is because of the mind's ability to think that it is called the fastest organ in the world. It can transport you anywhere instantaneously, unhindered by either space or time. The constant changes that take place around us give rise to desires, which the mind then tries to fulfill using the sensory organs of the body. These desires can produce both positive and negative

impacts. It is the duty of the intellect to decide which desire to pursue and which to let go. All creatures in the universe are created from the elements found in nature. There are three core essences (gunas) that encompass all those elements - satvaguna, rajoguna, and tamoguna. These gunas define if the object under their influence is going to create a positive or negative effect. All three of them are present in every living being in varying degrees. Whichever guna happens to dominate determines the overall quality of the person/thing.

Stress and the Mind In general, stress arises in one of two cases: a) When you don't get something you like, or b) When you get something you don't like. Each person is a member of different social groups and, as such, assumes different roles in his life. He is a parent, a boss, a son, a teacher, and a friend all rolled into one. Through these varying facets of his personality, man tries to achieve pleasure and happiness. However, more often than not, these roles clash with each other, creating tension for the person. People with dominating rajas and tamas gunas have the tendency to take on more stress. Because of the dominance of these gunas, the mind imposes its will over the intellect, leading to bad decisions. Their ability to tell right from wrong is greatly diminished and they wander around aimlessly, caught in their web of desires and searching hopelessly for peace. Over time, the negative effects of stress start showing on their body and they usually end up falling ill.

When I realized that I was more than this body of mine, I started questioning what real beauty was. It was different from the image propagated by the mass media and fashion industry because that beauty fades easily. Inner beauty, on the other hand, stays with us throughout our lives.

ll parents want the best for their children. They want to see them healthy, happy, and wellmannered. And, most of all, they want to see them turn out as achievers. But, parents often feel frustrated in the process of raising children from infancy to adulthood, constantly searching for the elusive strategy to deal effectively with each problematic situation. Parents tend to draw on past experience; but, at the same time, they feel overwhelmed by the complexities of the changed times, a world radically different from what they grew up in. They feel unsure and uncertain whether their parents' methods would still be applicable in an age of satellite TV, computer games, and junk food. Confused, they turn to books and the Internet to find advice from leading psychologists and experts. However, they often find the solution to be fragmented, vague, complicated, impersonal, or incomplete. What parents today need, instead, is a simple set of rules to guide them at every step, so that whatever challenge they may face, they know exactly what to do. These rules have to be easy to remember as well as intuitive. They also need to be all-encompassing, so that they can provide the requisite solution for an over-energetic seven year old as well as a confused fifteen year old. After more than two decades in the field of education, working with thousands of children, parents and teachers, I have developed a set of principles which I call the 10 Laws of Learning. I have derived these laws from proven, universal principles that have stood the test of time, and have created a simple framework that is both

Treating Depression A Jiva Case Study Depression is real. It affects over 16% of the urban population. Read how Jiva successfully treated one such patient using Ayurveda.

Dr. Sanjay explained to the patient that depression and stress were caused by the aggravation of vata dosha, which leads to an imbalance in sattva, rajas, and tamas. This imbalance affects the heart – the seat of the manas srota, making the person emotionally sensitive. More critically, the brain also gets negatively impacted owing to disruption in chemicals known as neurotransmitters. They are responsible for delivering messages between brain cells, so any imbalance can disturb communication and leave you in a poor emotional state.

Typical Line of Treatment At Jiva, we treat depression at different levels because this illness affects not just the mind, but also the body and spirit. Typically, the emphasis is on calming the vata dosha and boosting sattva guna in the body, which returns peace and stability to the mind. The physical aspect of the condition is treated using medication while the mental and psychological aspects are treated using yoga and pranayama. Patients see best results when the treatment is supplemented by dietary and lifestyle changes.

Dietary Recommendation for the Patient Excessive consumption of katu (pungent), amla (sour) and spicy tastes, and intake of vidahi (hot), tikshna (dry) foods are causes of mental disorders. Same is the case with heavy and processed foods. Therefore, such foods were strictly forbidden for the patient. The patient was asked to follow a vata pacifying diet, of which fresh fruits and fresh vegetables were a large part. Milk and milk products were also recommended. Foods like butter, ghee, buttermilk, etc. are essential for enriching sattva, which in turn energizes the mind. They also provide the body with essential nutrients and proteins. The patient was asked to avoid deep fried dishes, spicy and hot food, tea, coffee, chocolate, and meat products, especially if they were pre-cooked and packaged. Emphasis was laid on consuming organic and fresh foods. Yoga Advice for the Patient Breathing has a direct connection to the mind. And because depression originates from the mind, regulating the breathing process forms a large part of the healing process. The patient was taught various breathing techniques. He was told to breath through the stomach in a way that the diaphragm expanded while breathing in and contracted while breathing out. Deep breathing properly oxygenates the brain, thereby calming it down. Other basic pranayama techniques and yoga postures were prescribed to improve blood circulation and help digestion. Patient was also advised to take long walks, especially during the early hours of the day. Apart from the physical benefits of the activity, breathing in fresh air and enjoying the stillness of dawn would help calm his brain.

The Result After just four months of undergoing treatment at Jiva, the patient showed marked reduction in stress levels. By his own admission, he felt 50% less depressed than before. His dependence on allopathic medication was gradually reduced. Eventually, he experienced significant relief from the condition.

Lord Krishna has given us a golden rule to fight stress. He tells us not to worry about things that we cannot change or events that are certain to happen.

O

ur mind is a fountain of feelings and desires. It believes that these very desires ensure its survival. Like an ocean that churns out waves endlessly, the mind, too, never tires of wanting things. And in the rare event that these desires do get fulfilled, we experience a fleeting sense of satisfaction.

Stress: A Modern Disease Medical science has proved beyond a shadow of doubt that the root cause of most of our ailments today is stress. The World Health Organization (WHO) has predicted that by 2020, stress will have become the world's deadliest disease, overtaking even cancer and AIDS in the process! This news in itself is a cause for stress, but, more importantly, it's a deadly reminder to all of us that we need to learn how to deal with stress better.

Psychosomatic Effects of Stress Unless we are completely rid of stress and as long as we have some unknown fears lurking ominously in the dark corners of our mind, we are at risk of experiencing emotional upheaval. In this situation, we start losing touch with the ordinary things in our lives. We tend to get

forgetful, unable to recall even the most basic information, like phone numbers and addresses. In the olden days, before civilization had completely developed, man was always at the risk of being attacked by wild animals. As a result, we developed the “animal instinct” that was essential for us to stay alive. When we went into survival mode, the brain shut off all nonessential information that's stored in our longterm memory and went into an adrenalin overdrive, purely guided by instincts. With the advent of modern societies, that danger was removed. However, thousands of years later, our brain still holds on to that primal animal instinct, which is at odds with the physical world we live in. This creates an imbalance in the mind and is considered the primary source of stress.

The Eternal Path of Safety We must learn how to use our intellect. Usually, we tend to worry about things that are yet to pass. Such worrying is useless, since it serves no purpose other than to make us more stressful. And with that begins a downward spiral that ultimately ends in our failure. That's why it's imperative we grab a minute for ourselves, take a step back, breath deeply, and clear our head. We must stop and think, “Is this worrying really going to solve my problem? Can it help me succeed in any way?” You'll find that the answer is invariably a “NO!” So there's no point worrying unnecessarily. As Lord Sri Krishna says in the Bhagawat Gita, a man should remain steadfast in success and failure, in joy and sorrow! If we follow his wise words, we'll have a better time facing our day-to-day challenges. And that's how we'll be able to lead a peaceful life, despite being surrounded by challenges.

STRESS & ITS EFFECT ON MARRIED LIFE Marriage isn't only about physical union between a man and woman. They have to bond on an emotional and spiritual level as well. And this can only happen if both of them take the effort to build a strong relation based on love, trust, and sacrifice.

O

ur ancient scriptures have laid down 16 traditional values that are essential and integral to our lives. One of them is marriage, which, through religious and societal sanction, allows a man and woman to start a domestic life together. The modern times that we live in are extremely dynamic and these rapid changes are bound to reflect on the life of a married couple as well. However, if they have great understanding between themselves, the relationship will be able to weather almost any difficulty life throws at them. Otherwise, things can turn sour really quickly. The marriage will be torn apart by stress and dissent and the husband and wife will go from being friends to foes in no time at all.

HERE ARE A FEW SITUATIONS THAT CAN WREAK HAVOC ON A COUPLE'S MARRIED LIFE: 1. Financial problems: Inadequate funds to meet personal or family expenses, bad

financial planning, incurring excessive debt. 2. Responsibility of kids: Inability to spend enough time raising the kids properly. 3. Interference from relatives: Unnecessary meddling from both the husband and wife's family. 4. Poor communication: Lack of constructive conversation carried out in a calm and balanced manner. 5. Professional stress: Letting work related problems take a toll on the relationship. 6. Physical tiredness: Hectic routine that leaves little or no energy for physical intimacy. 7. Bad habits or behavior: Negative traits like addiction, excessive criticism, and backbiting can weaken a marriage. 8. Poor health: Prolonged illness, lack of mutual

Deeper Ayurveda / Kid’s Special Everyone and everything changes with time. With each passing decade, the new generation experiences a reduced quality of life. The effects can clearly be seen on children, who are paying the price for this development.

A

sk anyone which phase of life they'd like to relive, the answer will most likely be “childhood”. If life is a garden, children are it's most beautiful flowers, making the whole world come to life with their laughter, exuberance, and innocence. The main reason why we're so drawn towards children is because they don't have ulterior motives. They are pure, free of pretense, or the need to manipulate anyone. They also don't differentiate between “mine” and “theirs”. The love they feel is universal and so is their ability to trust. However, we're seeing a decline in these qualities. Children are maturing faster than ever, and in the process, the best part of their lives is becoming shorter and shorter. They've even started experiencing problems like stress and depression — a phenomenon that was unheard of before. But it's true, nonetheless.

Here are a few factors that can trigger tension among children:  Illness or diseases

Usually kids are unable to talk openly to their parents about the things that trouble them. It's up to the parents to notice changes in their behavior and figure out what is wrong.  Prone to frequent outbursts of anger or

crying How to Deal with Stress

 Financial problems at home

By their very nature, children are extremely loving and affectionate. That's why it's important that you shower them with love, care, and respect. This wholesome and appreciative environment helps them feel emotionally and mentally secure. There are plenty of other things you can do to keep them stress free.

 Increased stress of homework and other school work

Spend some time everyday to listen and talk to them

Inform them in advance if you're going to move homes, change cities, or switch jobs

Talk to them about the virtue of being patient, empathetic, and calm

 Insecurity caused by the birth of a younger sibling  Pressure from the family or the society  An atmosphere of fear or violence around them  Death of a relative they were close to  Stress of exams and grades

/ Beauty

Think about it for a minute: Can cosmetics make a sick person look as attractive as a person who is naturally fit and fine? Is there any product that can match the glow of a truly radiant skin or restore the healthy pink touch to the cheeks? No. True beauty comes from within and is usually accompanied by emotional and mental wellbeing because stress can work insidiously to wreak untold havoc on the body.

Busy schedule, pollution, and irregular diet have made our lives more susceptible to stress. Not only does this affect our health, it also robs our skin of its glow and beauty.

Some outward manifestations of stress are:  Hair fall, dandruff, dryness of scalp, dull

and white hair  Excessively oily or dry skin  Pigmentation and breakouts like pimple,

acne, blackheads, etc.  Dark circle under the eyes, red or swollen

eyes  Wrinkles or fine lines on the face  Being distracted while talking  Excessive irritability or anger  Irregular breathing and tremor in the

limbs  Weak and brittle nails  Unexplained weight loss or weight gain  Feeling tired, listless, sad or hopeless

HOW TO LOOK BEAUTIFUL WITHOUT USING MAKEUP There's no denying that a beautiful face, a glowing skin, and bright eyes can captivate our fantasy, more so if they're accompanied by a soft-spoken, melodious voice.

T

he definition of beauty has changed over time. Modern culture lays emphasis only on outward appearance and women the world over are using all kinds of creams, lotions, and cosmetics to look appealing. Not only is the effect of these products temporary, but, very often, they also lead to side effects.

As you can see, things are far from good when you're buckling under the pressure of stress. But what are the outward manifestations of remaining emotionally and mentally healthy? Here are a few signs of being stress free:  Radiant and supple skin  Bright and sharp eyes  Thick and silky hair that maintains its

natural color  An attractive face that has a natural glow

about it  An attentive and happy mind  Pleasant, polite, and sociable demeanour  An upbeat and positive personality  Optimistic and energetic outlook to life

5 Common Foods that Are Causing Stress & Tension The secret to living a simple and happy life is not all that complicated. We must use our wisdom to maintain balance in every situation of life and understand the difference between good and bad. This will help steer life towards the path of truth and perfection.

O

ver the centuries, man has progressed significantly in all spheres of life. However, this has not been without its side effects, most commonly reflected in the lifestyle that we lead today. And, usually, the first two casualties are diet and sleep cycle. When it comes to food, we pretty much eat anything and everything without considering its effect on our body. We starve ourselves because we don't have enough time to pack our meals or we eat junk food to satiate our hunger. Binge eating to appease our cravings has also become very common these days. All this can have adverse reactions on our body and mind, usually manifesting in the shape of physical illnesses and emotional turbulence. Here are 5 common culprits that are known to increase stress and tension in the body. 1 Salt Excessive intake of salt increases blood pressure and puts a great deal of stress on the heart. It also leads to the production of high amounts of adrenalin, popularly known as the stress hormone. Eating food items that are too salty can damage the sensitive lining of the stomach and cause problems like acidity, constipation, and piles. 2 Sugar This sweet saboteur is responsible for problems like diabetes and obesity. When there is too much sugar in the bloodstream, it can lead to the production of hormones like adrenalin and cortisol. This can give you a false high, which is usually accompanied by a rapid dip, followed by laziness, tiredness, and emotional upheaval.

4 Fast Food Junk food is low on nutrition and fiber, which can upset the balance of hormones, resulting in irritability, stress, and anger. Since they are high on saturated and trans fat, junk food can lead to cholesterol, heart diseases, obesity, diabetes, blood pressure, and renal problems. Finally, harmful fats present in fast food are known to reduce brain function as well. 5 Alcohol Excessive consumption of alcohol can inhibit the production of serotonin, which works to maintain balance within the brain. It can also impact our ability to take decisions and lead to moral degradation. Finally, alcohol is known to upset the digestive process and cause several liver problems too.

3 Caffeine Too much caffeine in the bloodstream can lead to palpitation and high blood pressure. Other side effects include excitability, irritability, queasiness, and insomnia. Caffeine from sources like tea, coffee, soft drinks, and chocolate are known to directly impact the nervous system.

The desire to become rich in a short span of time has led us all into a furious and never ending rat race. And we're paying for it in the form of poor health and medical complications.
