keeping Acidity in balance Dr. Partap Chauhan
Often to please our taste buds, we overburden our digestion. Overindulging gastronomical desires can easily lead to gas, pain, indigestion and acidity. Another factor for this could be improper lifestyle. Hyperacidity is caused by excess of acid in the stomach. When diet and lifestyle is not proper, our digestive system is thrown out of balance. Hence, today’s fast food generation is commonly affected by this problem.
Reasons of Hyperacidity Ayurveda considers multiple reasons for hyperacidity, of which vitiation of Pitta is considered to be the primary. Because of this, foods taste sour, we get sour eructation, foul odour from mouth and general digestive disorders. Here are some of the common reasons of hyperacidity: Overeating Eating non-veg foods in excess Excess consumption of sour fruits and yogurt Eating oily and spicy foods frequently Stress, anger, lack of sleep Holding urination or defecation Excess salt in food Sleeping in excess during the day Obesity Pregnancy
Advanced age As a side effect of chemotherapy
Symptoms of hyperacidity People who are affected by hyperacidity cannot eat or rest properly. If not treated on time, this can easily cause ulcers, which may bleed and cause unbearable pain. To prevent ulcers, it is important to recognize the symptoms and get timely treatment for hyperacidity.
The common symptoms of hyperacidity Fatigue
Tendency to vomit after meals
Sour eructation
Yellow or green bile
Nausea
Anxiety
Burning sensation of the stomach
Shortness of breath
Indigestion
Lack of appetite
Ayurvedic perspective of Hyperacidity
Excess pitta dosha is the core cause of hyperacidity. Formation of excess bile is the characteristic of this disease. Balanced pitta is essential for proper digestion, but in diseased form Pitta smells foul and causes diseases.
Avoid tea and coffee Limit the use of onion, garlic, tomatoes, vinegar Avoid fried and spicy foods. Instead prefer a light and easy to digest meal Avoid curd/yogurt during night

Dr. Satya Narayana Dasa
Constipation & Acidity When a child is born its body is very small. With time it grows. The growth happens because of the food ingested. Thus it is very obvious that our body is made of food. In Sanskrit food is called annam. The word annam literally means ‘that which is eaten’. It can also mean ‘that which can be eaten’. In other words, food is that which we eat but it can also be the cause of our death, if not taken properly.

Intelligence of food
Most of the disease that human beings suffer, are caused by food. This is quite a paradox that something that we eat to remain healthy gives us the opposite effect. Why does this happen? Ayurveda says that the reason for this is not using our intelligence properly, prajnaparadha. Just as when we buy a car we know what type of fuel the car runs on. If you put wrong type of fuel, say diesel in a petrol-run car, then car will not run. No one fills a petrol-run car with diesel. But when it comes to our own body we are not careful what we put in it. Our body, however, is very resilient. It can tolerate a lot of misuse. When misused, it sends us signals. If we do not pay heed, then it can crash down and we become bed-ridden.
Significance of emotions in digestion
Constipation and acidity are two such signals given by our body to be wary of our diet. We should, however, know that food is not the only cause of acidity and constipation. They can also happen because of emotional imbalance. The ancient teachings of Ayurveda tell us that our emotional state has a dramatic impact on our
physical health. Human beings are emotional creatures. It is our emotions that guide and control our physical body. Most of our physical actions spring from our emotions. Emotions have a direct impact on our digestive system. For example, if our life is in danger or we imagine it to be so, then our body automatically prepares itself to combat the danger. It needs extra energy to confront the situation. May be we need to physically run away or we need to fight, or we need to mentally find a solution for the imminent problem. In either case we need energy either in our legs, arms or in the brain. Digesting the food in the belly consumes a great amount of energy. During emergency situation, such of fear, anxiety or stress, the digestive system is put on a hold and the energy that goes into digesting food is directed to the part of the body where it is needed to protect us from the cause of fear, anxiety or stress. All other emotions, such as anger have similar effect on our digestive system.
Choose foods according to your digestion
According to Ayurveda, our body has a type of energy called Samana Vayu which is the integrating/digestive
Food when consumed can have three effects on us. It can nourish our body, it can act as medicine and cure disease, and it can also be a cause of disease.
22
PARAMAYU Jan 2018
capacity of the human mind-body system. The energy of Samana Vayu is what enables us to digest and absorb the nutrition from the food we eat. It is also the force responsible for digesting our life experiences. When this force is weakened due to emotional disturbance, it has a direct effect on our capacity to digest food. When food is not digested properly we can get acidity or constipation. The emotion of fear disturbs apana vayu. This can lead to constipation or IBS. The emotion of anger disturbs pitta. This can lead to heartburn and acidity. Anxiety, stress and depression can also lead to constipation.
Maintain Emotional Balance
According to Ayurveda, the emotional body can be cleansed the same way we purify the physical body. We can treat emotional imbalances with diet and lifestyle. For example, turmeric (curcumin) and omega-3 rich oils, can help treat emotional issues, such as depression, PMS, and anxiety. We can also treat digestive issues with emotional processing techniques. Emotions can be digested, just like food, by becoming an indifferent observer. If we simply observe and feel the emotion, it will rise, fall, and come to a natural state of completion. By being surrendered to God, and accepting a particular situation that is causing us emotional imbalance we can digest the emotion. We can let go of what is not needed and keep what is useful. It is similar to the assimilation of food from which we derive some energy and throw out the rest as refuse. Ayrvedic massage, practice of yogasnas, pranayama and eating sattvika diet is very helpful in resolving the emotional imbalance. If the problem still persists one can take help from a good psychotherapist. For such services one can refer to http:// vedicpsychology.jiva.com/

Good Rules Are the Basis of a Healthy Society
Good rules are necessary for a healthy individual, society or nation. Without them there is nothing to keep people off the wrong path and guide them on the path of rightness. The founders of every successful nation understood this and hence they had instituted constitutions to guide their countrymen. On the 26th January, 1950, the constitution of India came into effect and since then this day has been celebrated as the Republic Day of India.
The history of Republic Day
On this day, the nation attained autonomy and became a republic. This day goes beyond the boundaries of religion, caste or creed and is celebrated by everyone irrespective of their personal choices, faiths and beliefs. This day unites the nation in celebration of the sacrifices that were made in freeing the motherland from the rule of colonial establishment which started with the East India Trading Company on Indian shores. A republic means a place where the people have rights and responsibilities and are bound by laws, which ensures equivocal development of every individual of the republic.

Significance of rules and laws in human life
Rules define what is right and wrong. It guides what should be done and what not. Not following the rules usually entails punishments through which these rules are enforced in a society. Without rules, a society can become overwhelmed with problems and disrupt the normal way of life. Similarly, without rules our body can also be overwhelmed with diseases. This is set of rules, or rather guidelines are collectively known as the Dincharya. Dincharya defines the guidelines for key aspects of our health: • Food • Sleep • Sexual Abstinence
These three are the pillars of a happy life. When these three are not in their ideal state, the body becomes weak and eventually succumbs to diseases. A person who maintains balance in these three aspects leads a happy and healthy life. Ayurveda recommends a schedule for every task from the moment you wake till you sleep. Doing this will keep you healthy and disease-free. By following the advices of Dincharya, a person can lead a healthy life without diseases. Just as the constitution is essential ensuring a nation’s progress and prosperity, similarly, Dincharya ensures health and prosperity of a person.

Childhood Under Threat from Constipation Constipation is not just limited to adults only; irregular bowel movements can be a problem in children too. When infants are transitioned from breastfeeding to solid foods, stool becomes hard. Even school going kids can also feel pain while passing stool. Without timely treatment, this can become a bigger problem for your child. Jan 2018 PARAMAYU

C
onstipation is a state of the bowels during which the motility decreases, stool becomes hard and painful to pass. Children may subconsciously hold on which can make the stool even harder and cause bloating. Eventually, they may associate the process of passing stool with pain and become stressed every day.
Ayurvedic Explanation of constipation
Undigested foods become stuck to the intestines and cause a vitiation of Vata. Excess vata disrupts digestion and the function of the large intestines even further. In children this can become a bigger problem since they are unable to express their problems like adults.
Causes of childhood constipation
Just in the case of adults, children are also affected by the diet they take, the amount of fluid they drink and regularity of bowel movements. Lifestyle and diet is at the root of the problem in both adults and children, let us take a look at some more common reasons: 1. Starting solid foods: When toddlers are given solid foods, the process of digestion changes and it may take some time for the gut to process solids. Usually a child on breastmilk passes stool 3-4 times a day. Transition to solids may lessen to 1-2 times a day, which is normal. This can be solved with proper potty training. More on that later. 2. Holding natural urge: The process of passing stool may cause anxiety in some child. As a result, he or she may become reluctant

PARAMAYU Jan 2018
The most common reason for constipation is lack of fluid in diet or medication. But interestingly, stress or emotional reasons can also constipate a child.
to the process. Fecal impaction is a problem which happens when the child does not pass solid stool, which results in liquid stool to leak out and soil underwear. 3. Improper potty training: Children should be trained to maintain a regular lavatory schedule. If they are uncomfortable using the new equipment, they will avoid going to the potty. One way to make it easy for them to go to the potty is to use the potty in front of them and talking to them. 4. Anxiety of the process: Children will become reluctant in starting a process that they know will lead to unhappy incidents like being washed with cold water or scrubbed harshly. If the past experience of passing stool was stressful, then there is a good chance that they will fear similar experience again. This can cause anxiety. 5. Effect of certain medication: Some medicines are known to cause stress in children and adults alike. Wrong medication can happen because of wrong diagnosis of the problem. For instance, if fecal impaction is diagnosed as diarrhoea then the medicines will cause the stool to harden even more. Do not medicate children without first consulting an experienced paediatrician.
6. Lack of fluids: Parents often usually ignore the fact that children need fluids too. Lack of enough fluids can cause dehydration or constipation. 7. Eating habits: Not chewing food properly, eating too fast or eating foods that do not include fibres are known causes of constipation.
How to understand your child has constipation?
Some common signs of constipation are: 1. Pain when passing stool 2. Standing on tip toes or clenching butt cheeks 3. Soiling the underwear (because of fecal impaction) 4. Straining while passing stool 5. Less than 3-4 bowel movements in a week (normal bowel movement is 1-2 per day)
Kid’s Special DEEPER AYURVEDA
Diet and Lifestyle Do not give your child fast foods or fried foods. Instead, teach them the significance of eating their green leafy vegetables and high-fibre foods. You can incentivise good dietary habits with simple rewards. For example: 30 minutes of TV time for eating all vegetables. Give your child enough fluids in regular intervals. If plain water does not interest them, mix a little honey in it. Fruits are high in dietary fibre. Give an apple or ripe banana to your child every day. One teaspoon of castor oil a day can be helpful in regularizing bowel movements. Apply a drop or two of castor oil on the navel area is also helpful. Soak a couple of figs overnight. Give your child the water and the figs next morning.
The role of parents
As a parent you should closely watch every small activity of your child. Keep an eye on the consistency of stool. If you see it hardening or liquefying, ask how your child feels. Ask about pain, discomfort or burning sensations. Make a diet chart that includes good amount of fibre, fruits and grains in their diet. Physical activity and facial expressions are also good indicators of how your child feels. If your child shows no interest in playing, remains unhappy or cries, something could be wrong. Seek the help of a paediatrician if the problem persists for long. Jan 2018 PARAMAYU

xcess fat in the body isn’t just bad for our image, it is the precursor to a whole host of diseases that can lower the quality of our life significantly. Cardiac problems, high blood pressure, kidney problems, enlarged prostrate, joint pains, diabetes - the list of diseases caused by obesity goes on. In winters, we usually become lethargic and drop physical activities to bare essentials, which makes it hard for the body to burn fats and they begin to accumulate.
Excess fat - it starts with the waist, thighs and stomach and then engulfs the entire body.
Drink Mint Tea. Coconut oil has a thermic effect on the body and boost metabolism. Try it. Workout before breakfast. This kick-starts your metabolism and helps in burning more fat. Sip on lemon juice and honey mixed with water.
What’s preventing you from getting a flat tummy?
The first step in reaching your fitness goals is to first understand the obstacles that are in your path to fitness. Here are some common ones: 1. Overeating: The most common reason because of which we gain weight is the combination of overeating and lack of physical activities. Overeating could be either because you love food or you are under some psychological stress and eating makes you feel better. If it is the later, please seek immediate medical help from an expert. 2. Vata Increasing diets: Carbonated drinks, fried, spicy and oily foods increase vata. When vata is increased it strengthens digestion in association with higher pitta and hence you tend to eat more. When you eat more, the excess carbs begin to accumulate as fats. This now leads to excess kapha dosha. If you are obese, then avoid both vata-type and kapha-type foods. 3. Little to no physical activity: Regular physical activity helps in burning fats and prevents it from becoming accumulated around the waist or thighs. Hence it is neces-

sary to maintain regular physical activity. 4. Excess or very little sleep: Too much or too little sleep disrupts natural metabolism. The body becomes unable to process fats. 5. Age: As age progresses, metabolism slows down naturally. This is why seniors are more likely to become overweight. Hormonal imbalances in advanced age is common, which also contributes to the problem of obesity. 6. Post-Pregnancy: As part of the natural birthing process, a pregnant woman’s body contains more fat to support the growth of the foetus. This excess fat stays on after the baby is born. Proper exercise and dietary discipline can reduce post-pregnancy obesity. Dietary guidelines to eat healthy Cut down on high carb foods such as polished rice and potato. Choose organic and fresh foods over processed and fast foods.
Choose nutritious multi-grains instead of wheat flour, pasta, spaghetti or noodles.
Yogasanas to cut fat
Yoga is a wonderful way to maintain healthy metabolism and keep your body in shape. Try these yogasanas for a flat tummy. Please do these yogas under the supervision of an expert. 1. Chakki Chalanasan: The word literally means ‘churning like a mill pose’. This pose moves the abdomen and helps you cut fats. 2. Balasana: The child pose, known as Balasana, is effective in strengthening the tummy muscles and burns fat. 3. Paschimmottasan: The bend-forward asana stretches the belly, back and hamstrings. This pose cuts fat, improves digestion and regulates blood pressure. Additional advantages of this pose are relief in headaches, increase in energy, and good health of the uterus and ovaries. T
he digestive system is a profound word which includes multiple organs in the digestive tract such as esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and multiple accessory digestive organs such as the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system is also the seat of several diseases such as indigestion, constipation, conservation, bloating, dyspepsia and sometimes serious ailments such as ulcers or cancer. In astrological birth charts, the 5th section is used to deduce ailments of the liver, pancreatic glands, and other organs in the abdominal region. Liver diseases, indirection, jaundice, hyperacidity, formation of stones, ulcers and tumours are all connected with the 5th section of an astrological birth chart. Leo dominates the 5th section and influences diseases that have been mentioned above. The only exception to this rule is the small intestine, which is ruled by the 6th section of the astrological birth chart. The sun is considered to be a causative agent of indigestion according to Indian astrology. You may have noticed that, when the sun is mild or covered in clouds, digestion may become weak. Many people observe this during the rainy season is also. Symptoms such as indigestion, bloating and gas formation are also commonly reported when the sun is not at its brightest. Hence, for good digestion, unhindered sunrays are important.
1. Presence of Saturn in Lagna, or association with the sun or the moon in any other section of the birth chart can influence a person to eat irregularly, or eat cold foods which eventually causes health problems. 2. Weak digestion and low digestive fire is often caused by the presence of the moon in the 6th section of the birth chart. The position of Shukra (the planet Venus) in the birth chart dictates whether a person likes fried and oily food. People who have both the Sun and the Venus adjacent to each other in their birth chart, are more likely to prefer fried & oily foods. If Venus is influenced by the planet Mars, then the preference shifts towards hot and spicy food items. Similarly, when Venus is influenced by Saturn, people tend to eat irregularly. Dominance of Saturn on the digestive system gives rise to lethargy, slow digestion and slow movement of food in the digestive tract. As a result, fluids in the body (blood, lymph, digestive fluids) as well as gases are attracted. Over time, this also influences how the toxic elements in the body are eliminated. Strong dominance may result in poor digestion and irregular elimination, thereby Hence, if the 5th or 6th section of the astrological birth chart is ruled by Leo or Libra, the person is more likely to suffer from constipation and indigestion problems. Some Common Reasons of Constipation According to Astrology
3. Association of the moon and Venus in the 6th or 8th section also leads to indigestion. Let us take a look at an example of constipation caused by position of planets in the birth chart:
The planetary and constellation placements of this birth chart is indicative of a life filled with digestive health problems. The position of sun, which is the principal in maintaining a strong digestion is overpowered by Saturn which is leading to multiple digestive complications including constipation. The best way to deal with this is to seek treatment for existing digestive problems and take preventive measures to prevent further issues. Jan 2018 PARAMAYU

Common Travel Health Issues
Nausea or vomiting is common health issue that people face when they travel. Eating spicy, oily foods before embarking on a trip can lead to bloating, gas or acidity. Usually on a trip, you have to sit in a sedentary position for long and that limits your physical activity, hence digestion becomes slow. Light and easy to digest foods are recommended when you are about to start a journey. If your journey is a short one, carry meals from your home and if you have to eat outdoors, avoid spicy and deep fried stuff. Here are some easy to follow travel tips that you can follow and eat healthy on your trip:
1. Instead of buying
packaged chips from the market you can buy potatoes and make chips at home. Better still, you can make mix nuts for healthy travel time snacks. In a bowl take dried fruits, nuts, sesame, pumpkin seeds and mix well. You can store this for months without worrying about it going stale.
2. Wash whole fresh fruits
and pack them in zip lock bags or air tight containers and carry them with you. Instead of buying fruits from a vendor eat these fruits. Fruits kept in the open attracts flies, dust and dirt. Never eat anything that is exposed to open air when you are travelling.
To ensure that your trip goes on without any detours to the doctor’s clinic, you need to watch what you eat. Eat healthy, stay fit, keep your energy levels high and enjoy every moment of your trip.
3. If you are thirsty, do
not drink from roadside taps, hotels or any source that you are not sure of. Prefer coconut water, or carry clean water with you. If you cannot find clean water, you may also chew on a juicy fruit like apple or orange. It is important to stay hydrated when you are travelling and fruit juices are very good in replenishing the lost water and maintaining the correct electrolyte in your body.
4. Yogurt could be a good
choice for snack, but yogurt has a sour potency and can cause gas or acidity, so choose wisely.
5. Whenever you feel like
indulging your sweet tooth, snack on a homemade granola bar instead of buying one at the store.
6. Start your journey with
something light. Avoid eating spicy or heavy foods since that will be difficult to digest, churn around in your stomach and may cause bloating, especially when you are on a bumpy stretch of road! Jan 2018 PARAMAYU

How does Diabetes Affect Vision?
The retina is a thin, light sensitive membrane which is necessary for the perception of vision. There are minute blood vessels on the retina which are essential for proper functioning of the eye. When blood sugar increases these minute blood vessels rupture, leading to bleeding, swelling in the retina and loss of sight. As the problem proceeds, new blood vessels are developed, but since these are weak there is always a chance of them rupturing and causing blindness. Symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy

Home Remedies for Acidity
ACidity What is Acidity?
Digestive enzymes are acidic in nature. Gastric juices help in digesting the food but in excess this may lead to gastritis which causes gas, bloating and a feeling of heaviness. Irregular diet and eating habits increase acid levels in the stomach which is acidity. as a result, we experience a burning sensation in the throat, chest, and abdomen. This is what is known as acidity.
Causes of Acidity Irregular meal timings, spicy foods & eating junk foods
1.
Drink Amla (Indian Gooseberry) juice in the morning on an empty stomach
2.
Do not stay awake till late at night
Soak raisings overnight and eat them first thing in the morning
3.
Do not eat spicy foods
Drink pomegranate juice in the morning
4.
Do not eat baked or roasted foods
Add coriander, fennel and mint in your diet
5.
Caraway is also a good home remedy for decreasing acidity. Boil caraway seeds and strain the water through a sieve. Drinking this water in the morning is helpful.
6.
Drinking cold milk is also beneficial in acidity
7.
Consume 1 teaspoon rose petal jam once or twice daily for relief in acidity
Tips to Keep Acidity in Control
Avoid excess exposure to the sun Practise Pranayama to keep stress in check Do not eat sour foods, coffee, tea, tobacco Do not fast excessively
Eating under stress Smoking, drinking alcohol and not chewing food properly Staying awake till late at night Because of the above reasons, the amount of acid in stomach increases and rises though the food canal. This upward rise of gastric juices is the cause of burning sensation in the abdomen and throat. Other symptoms of increased acidity are headaches, sour eructation, dyspepsia etc.
Note: By following the above mentioned home remedies will provide relief in keeping excessive acidity in check. For proper diagnosis and treatment, please talk to a doctor. Jan 2018 PARAMAYU
