Practice Yoga for Holistic Growth
T
he instinct to live a long life is natural and shared by almost everyone around us. For centuries, it has inspired people to work hard and unveil the secret to longevity. In this hope, they’ve made many discoveries and inventions through the ages.
What is yoga?
Yoga has a lot to offer humanity. In addition to physical health and fitness, it can also help people achieve mental peace and spiritual well-being, while discovering their true calling in life.
Yoga is an ancient art and science that was discovered by great sages to achieve long life and happiness. It also helps people understand the actual purpose of life and realize their ultimate goal. The word yoga originates from the Sanskrit term “yuj”, meaning ‘connection’ or ‘union’. In general, the meeting of elements called yoga. This union naturally increases their combined power, importance, and utility.
Different definitions but one goal To understand the importance of life and how a person can achieve the main goal of life through yoga, it’s essential to understand the message Lord Shri Krishna passed on to Arjuna in the Bhagvad Gita. Lord Shri Krishna says, “yoga karmasu kaushlam”,meaning that perfection of duties is yoga.

“The state where all thoughts, emotions and desires naturally and spontaneously subside without any forceful suppression is called yoga”. Many sages and experts have explained yoga techniques in their own way for the benefit of mankind. The Vedas and Upanishadas or other knowledge giving ancient texts are based on facts that guide people on how to lead a healthy and happy life. Whether by way of Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Dhyan Yoga, or Gyaan Yoga, one thing is quite clear that it’s very hard to control the mind without continuous practice or implementation of self discipline. It is impossible to have a healthy and happy mind if you have unregulated desires.
Yoga is Incomplete Without Dedication To learn and practice yoga in its complete sense, dedication is necessary. Doing it irregularly or half heartedly will not serve any purpose. By practicing yoga the right way everyday, a person can get a lot of benefits. A trained yoga practitioner can face any difficult passage of life and achieve the goal he’s set his eyes on. Maharshi Patanjali described eight parts of yoga, which are collectively known as ‘Ashtang Yoga’. They are yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharna, dhyana and samadhi. Regular practice of Ashtang Yoga prevents the mind from becoming corrupt and impure. Furthermore, a person becomes more capable of controling his mind by increasing coordination and balance at the physical, psychological, and intellectual level. As a result, the healthy body connects with its inner self and creates a healthy world by being benevolent towards the society.

Here are a few tips that should be followed to make yoga an easier and more pleasant experience.
Always try to keep pure thoughts in mind while practicing yoga. Tell yourself that you’re healthy and strong and want to improve yourself even more.
To get the desired goal, yoga practice requires your complete faith as well as dedication.
To deal with internal enemies like lust, desire, attachment, ego, selfishness, etc., and to make the mind pure and calm, you need to practice yama (non-violence, truth, celibacy and non-possessiveness) and niyama (sanitation, contentedness, penance, self-introspection, and meditation). Practicing yama and niyama will invigorate your spiritual practice (sadhana), simplify your life, make you fearless, and eventually eliminate the conflicts of the mind.
Yoga should not be limited to just a few postures or breathing techniques. It involves discipline of the body, mind, and soul.
Yoga Dharma, Manav Dharma Having understood the importance of yoga, more than 175 countries of the world have agreed to adopt and practice it. In addition, they’ve also decided to celebrate ‘International Yoga Day’ on 21st June every year. This goes to show that yoga is the force that can inspire people to lead peaceful, prosperous, and healthy lives. Come, let us adopt yoga to make life healthier, happier, and more energetic. Let us free ourselve from bouts of anxiety, hopelessness, depression, stress, and fatigue. Note: Before practicing yoga, it is advisable to consult your doctor. You should also practice yoga under the guidance of a trained expert.

India In Action:
A Jiva Initiative to Build a Healthy, Wealthy, & Peaceful Society
India in Action is a community program launched by Jiva to promote the values of maintaining cleanliness, giving charitably, and achieving good health through Ayurveda. The India in Action initiative was launched on December 25, 2015 in an event organized held at the Jiva Public School. The ceremony was presided by Sri Rishipal Chauhan, who elaborated that Indian in Action was conceptualized as a step towards building a healthy, wealthy, peace loving, and fearless society. It was to provide every individual with •An aim of life •A philosophy of life •A value of life •A style of life Designed to be an ongoing community effort, India in Action has three main focus points a) Promoting cleanliness through the Throw it Right campaign –
Students from Class 11 and 12, accompanied by their teachers, went into the areas around the school and educated people on the importance of keeping their surrounding clean and disposing waste properly. b) Spreading the concept of good health by promoting the Body Type Test – This was done in a bid to connect every day life to the principles of Ayurveda and promote awareness of individual body constitution. c) Learning about the joy of giving to those less fortunate than us. Students of the school went out at distributed woolen clothes, blankets, and food to the underprivileged and needy. India in Action has since
conducted several community support programs, all in keeping with the broader aim of this initiative. In fact, the Body Type Test was so well received that we went on to organize them in LIC offices, Resident Welfare Associations, and even the Marwari Mahila Samiti in Calcutta. It is heartening to see support and appreciation India in Action has received from students, parents, teachers, and community members alike. We are encouraged to pursue this dream with even more zeal and enthusiasm and keep up the effort to building a stronger, healthier and more empowered India.

Ayurveda
and Yoga - Dr. Partap Chauhan
Ayurveda is not just about natural therapy and home remedies. It is the complete science of life that imparts detailed knowledge about healthy living. Similarly, Yoga is considered a spiritual practice that keeps ignorance at bay.
A
yurveda and Yoga need no introduction at all. Both have achieved phenomenal recognition and success at a global level. Although there are several treatment methods and exercise options available, the increasing popularity of Ayurveda and Yoga indicate their importance and usefulness among the masses. It is believed that having a healthy body and happy mind are crucial to everyday life. They also help you achieve short and long term goals. But, this can only happen with knowledge about Ayurveda and Yoga. Let's find out how, despite inherent differences between both, Yoga and Ayurveda are connected to each other.
Origin
Various physical, emotional, and spiritual ailments can hinder the efforts you're making to attain this goal. Ayurveda helps balance the body, mind, senses, and soul, keeping you free from diseases and helping you attain that blissful state where you become one with the Divine Power. As you can see, both Ayurveda and Yoga show the path of liberation from the bondage of a mundane life by maintaining perfect health and wellbeing.
The Vedas are accepted as the primary source of knowledge for anything related to Indian civilization and culture. It was this Vedic tradition that also gave rise to Ayurveda and Yoga. You'll find several literal meanings of the word 'Yoga' in the dictionary, but in essence, it means to connect to God by identifying our own reality. Similarly, Ayurveda also mentions that 'ayu' or 'life' is not just about physical growth and ageing. It takes a holistic view of life and advocates a balanced and healthy combination of body, mind, senses, and soul.
In the absence of complete facts, most people have very limited knowledge about Ayurveda and Yoga. For them, Yoga is all about asanas (postures) or pranayama (breathing exercises) and Ayurveda is a practice that cures diseases using herbs. However, the truth is that both are complete sciences that focus on other important factors, like the mind and the senses.
Purpose
Parts of Yoga and Ayurveda
Ayurveda and Yoga may have very different methodologies, but they are connected and

supplementary to each other because they share the same purpose or goal. Yoga, with its purification practices for the body and mind, aims to connect the individual to his / her inner self and the higher soul. Likewise, Ayurveda also emphasises that the main purpose of life is to attain 'moksha' (salvation) by following your 'dharma' (duty) in all that you do, whether you're searching for artha (livelihood) or fulfilling your kama (desires).
Functioning
Yoga is classified into eight parts as given below.

This assists in cleansing of physical as well as mental impurities. To cure disorders of the mind, Ayurveda recommends Sattvavjaya chikitsa, a mode of treatment that includes different techniques of yoga and meditation. For internal purification, there is shat karma, or six different procedures that include Dhauti, Basti, Neti, Tratak, Nauli, and Kapabhati. Here, Jal neti, Sutra neti, and Kapalbhati are used to clear impurities in the nose, throat, and brain. Vamandhauti, Gajakarni, and Dandadhauti target the stomach region while Shankhprakshalan, Agnisaar, Nauli, Basti, and Ganesh kriya are used for impurities in the intestine. Vaman (Emesis) is effective in stomach-based kapha disorders, Virechana (Purgation) in pitta disorders, Basti (Medicated enema) in vata disorders, Nasya (Nasal administration) in ENT and brain related disorders, and Raktamokshan (Blood letting) treats blood impurities. In the end, we can say that Ayurveda and Yoga assist each other. They are two separate branches of one tree. Both are important to achieve the ultimate goal of life, which are liberation and self-realization.

I firmly believe that the root cause of diseases is a lack of connection with love. So, when I hear Dr. Chauhan say, “Don't be scared of oil; oil is love, ”I understand exactly what he means. YOUR INTEREST IN AYURVEDA I became interested in natural medicines in my late teens when I realized that allopathy did not treat patients or cure diseases in a holistic manner. That’s why when I became a therapeutic masseuse, I wanted to include an element of spirituality in my practice. It was around this time that I met Satya Narayana Dasa Babaji and heard about Dr. Partap Chauhan. I realised that Ayurveda was what I’d been looking for all my life. Our forefathers had left us an extraordinary user manual, explaining in great detail how to live rich, healthy, and balanced lives. CHALLENGES FOR AYURVEDA IN YOUR COUNTRY In the West, people talk about a healthy body and mind, but there’s a lack of awareness about nourishing the soul. When it comes to balancing the body, the senses, the mind, and the soul, they’re absolutely clueless and have no idea where to begin or even who to turn to for help. STATE OF AYURVEDA IN FRANCE There’s something special about France. Here, religious and spiritual matters are almost taboo. However, we are also the highest consumer of tranquillizers in the world. This indicates that the French population is under great stress and I believe Ayurveda can be the solution to this problem.

YOUR ASSOCIATION WITH JIVA Since I became associated with Jiva, my life has changed completely. I now work for A Ciel Ouvert, a French organization founded by Alain Chevillat. One of its departments is dedicated to the promotion of Ayurveda in France, in partnership with Jiva. Part of my job is to help people discover Ayurveda through massages and other specific Ayurvedic treatments. We follow the Jivananda daily routine and practise meditation too. I feel happy when I see people enjoying this daily experience and connecting to their true nature. I firmly believe that the root cause of diseases is a lack of connection with love. So, when I hear Dr. Chauhan say, “Don't be scared of oil; oil is love, ”I understand exactly what he means. After a massage, when people leave, they take with them the love that’s present in the oil and in the massage. That is the real nourishment that Ayurveda is giving us. FUTURE OF AYURVEDA IN FRANCE Ayurveda in France still has a long way to go. A majority of the nation has never even heard of it! At the same time, a lot of people are switching to natural treatments. It’s also encouraging to see allopathic practitioners take an interest in Ayurveda, since their status allows them to sensitize a wider audience. I think slowly and steadily this ancient knowledge will be promoted in France and Dr. Chauhan's dream to take Ayurveda to every home will be achieved.
Yoga is inseparable from Life — In Conversation With Padmashree Bharat Bhushan
Q1. What is yoga according to you? And how can people practice it in such a busy lifestyle? PBB: Yoga is losing yourself to blend into He, the Almighty. It is the most wonderful art of life and the key to never failing happiness; what people call bliss. It is the best tool to achieve whatever is attainable in life. For me yoga is everything. I am a proud yoga seeker and a servant of this noble science. As for making time for yoga in our busy schedule, when it’s at the cost of your life, you’d do anything to survive. Once we realize the significance of something in our life, we find time easily. Moreover, the practice of yoga does not need any
separate time from your busy lifestyle. In fact, it increases and multiplies the hours of the day, if practiced and applied to your life. In the end, if we don’t have any time for yoga, we should be ready to find enough time for the hospital! Q2. How did you personally get attracted towards yoga at such an early age? PBB: Since childhood, yoga has been part of my lifestyle. I should say it’s integral to who I am. Seeing my activities and the way I lived, my parents and teachers started noticing some difference. As I grew older, people, especially the youth, started calling me Guruji. I don’t know why. The excellence

You were awarded the Padmashree in 1991 by the President of India for your remarkable work in the field of Yoga. What was it like? PBB: Being awarded the Padmashree created history. It was such a lovely surprise. Living on the principles of yoga, I gained ideal health, an attractive figure, a calm mind, and a cheerful heart. More importantly, I was able to do some good to society, nation, and the world. This gave me a lot of joy. Also, achieving the first ever Padmashree at the young age of 39 was a bonus. I was the symbol of the government’s recognition of yoga. I felt truly delighted that my work earned the first ever Padma award to yoga science. It made me more responsible as I felt that my country and the science of yoga had high expectations from me. I wanted to work to widen the horizons and deepen the roots of yoga all over the world. As a result, lifestyle diseases in India are growing rapidly. Q5. Your message for the young generation? PBB: Messages are given by great souls. I am a simple yoga sadhaka. mit Gupta was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis in 2006 and for the next ten years, he experienced severe pain in the back, hips, and shoulders. He fought long and hard against the disease, but when all his efforts, money, and time did not provide any significant results, he started to tire. In June 2015, after having exhausted all other options, Amit finally decided to try his hand at yoga.
When teaching proper breathing, the first step is to get your kids to breathe through their noses. The second part is to get them to breathe from their stomachs rather than their chests. What happens when you breathe this way is that the stomach expands outwards, causing your intestines and other innards to move out of the way. This makes room for the diaphragm to pull the lungs down to their fullest capacity. As a result you get the largest breath of air possible. Deep breathing has many implications for learning. It can control nervousness. In the future, whenever your children are facing a stressful situation, encourage them to take deep breaths from their stomachs. Within a few breaths, tension will ease and clarity of thought will return.
Wise Up To Exercise Exercise is good for you and your children. Kids who exercise regularly are less prone to allergies and colds and miss fewer school days. They are also less likely to develop diseases. Exercise also increases their ability to concentrate and memorize. It’s

Stretching It Out Due to our somewhat unnatural lifestyles, our bodies get contorted into strange positions that they were never intended to be in, resulting in the muscles getting constricted and the blood flow slowing down. Teaching your children to stretch regularly is a practice that will benefit them immensely in their school-going years — and their adult lives as well. Our Bodies Need Rest Too! Sleep and rest are intrinsic to the learning process. Some children believe that by increasing study time, they’ll be able to learn more. But there are diminishing returns on certain investments — and studying is one of them. Rest provides children with time to shuffle and organize new information, as well as stock up on and create fresh supplies of brain cells. Without proper rest children will not be able to assimilate and retain what they’re learning.

The Common Meaning of Yoga The word 'yoga' in Sanskrit has various meanings, depending on the context it is applied to. In Jyotisha vidya (astrology), it refers to a special combination of planets, days, or constellation, such Kala-sarpa-yoga or Amrita-siddhi-yoga. In this particular sense, the Hindi word 'jugaad', too, is derived from the Sanskrit word yoga. In philosophy, the word yoga either means union with God or making one's mind free of all thoughts.
Preparing the Body for Birth In Ayurveda, getting pregnant is not considered an unexpected outcome of indulging in a pleasurable act. In fact, it talks in great detail about how one should prepare for conception by being healthy at the physical, psychological, spiritual, and financial levels.
Types of Yoga There are various types of yoga such as Karma, Jnana, Dhyana, and Bhakti yoga. In Bhagavad Gita, Lord Shri Krishna describes all of them in great detail to Arjuna. However, he recommends only Bhakti yoga to Arjuna, calling it the best of all types of yogas (Gita 6.47). It is the essential message of all our Indian scriptures. The other types of yoga have some very specific requirements and eligibility and, for this reason, they're not applicable to all.
Importance of Bhakti Yoga Bhakti yoga, on the other hand, is universal. It can be practiced by everyone, regardless of their gender, age, nationality, creed, or status in society. In Bhakti yoga, you surrender yourself to God and dedicate all that you do as
In Ayurveda, the word 'yoga' means a specific combination of herbs. In mathematics, it means to add numbers. In engineering, yoga means using a machine, contraption, or a process to achieve something.

acts of devotion to Him. Hearing about God, chanting His name, meditating on Him, and worshipping Him are considered the primary requirements of Bhakti yoga.
Method of Bhakti Yoga According to the great sages of India, chanting the name of God and meditating on his divine qualities are the best ways to come closer to that Universal Power and attain happiness during kaliyuga. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu recommended the chanting of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. 500 hundred years ago, he predicted that this mantra would be chanted all over the world. Now his prophecy has come true. Even in Western countries people have become attracted to doing kirtan. There are regular kirtan festivals in Europe and America where devotees gather in thousands and sing devotional songs continuously for a few days. Kirtan is very easy. Anyone can participate in it. Even if you cannot sing (or prefer not to), the least you can do is listen to the beautiful songs of God. Kirtan is the easiest means of purifying one's heart. Everybody likes music. Instead of listening to boring songs, you should listen to kirtan and bhajans about God.

hen you're out to create something, it's really important to equip yourself with extensive knowledge and prepare yourself in a way that you're able to do justice to the task. For a couple, having a child is important since it completes the family. However, modern lifestyle and increased stress have become the cause of several ailments, including complications related to conception. The growing number of fertility clinics and use of latest technology to help with conceiving a child are proof enough of how serious the problem really is.
Ayurveda elaborates on the appropriate diet, lifestyle, and thinking that a person should adopt based on their constitution. Apart from such guidelines, many useful herbal combinations are also mentioned that help both men and women with conception. These are known rasayana, or rejuvenating preparations.
Four Aspects of Conception Ayurveda identifies four contributors to successful conception – healthy seed (semen and ovum), healthy uterus, proper nutrition, and the right time. When all four aspects function well and are balanced, they facilitate natural conception. If any one of them is affected negatively, you may have trouble getting pregnant.
Importance of Vata Dosha Blood circulation, respiration, excretion, and transportation are considered the main functions of vata dosha. Vata is known as prana, or life energy. The apana vata, one of the five types of vata, is naturally responsible for menses, secretion of semen, and elimination of urine and stool. The pelvic area, or the reproductive system, is one of natural locations of the vata dosha. Therefore, when vata gets aggravated, it is unable to carry out its natural functions and can create semen related disorders and irregularity in menstruation cycle. This can ultimately lead to many problems in conception.
Pre Conception Yoga These days, most people are familiar with the fact that yoga can help ease stress and provide necessary nutrition to parts of the body by improving blood circulation. n the current competitive atmosphere, it’s considered essential to be an all-rounder since it allows you to fulfil the different ambitions that you have in life. If your efforts don’t bear fruit or you’re unable to achieve your goals, you might develop an inferiority complex, which, in turn, can lead to many disorders. Long time back, childhood was considered to be a period that was free from all stress and tension. But in the times that we live in, the scene has changed drastically. Even children are no longer tension free. There are several factors that could be responsible for this - going to school at such an early age, the load of their daily study-homework-tuition routine, excessive exposure to television, spending time on mobiles and the laptop instead of indulging in physical activities, increased insecurity due to living in nuclear families, and decline in moral values and culture because of absence of proper guidance from elders.
Childhood And Ayurveda According to Ayurveda, this primary phase of life is dominant in kapha dosha. Kapha provides lubrication and nutrition and sustains proper growth and strength in the body. This also helps develop mental attributes like patience, affection, forgiveness, and tolerance. It is this phase that acts as a solid foundation for the future. Sunlight For Healthy Bones Lack of knowledge has lead people to be unappreciative of the sun and its life-giving powers. For them, its role is limited to regulating temperature, controlling the seasons, and tanning the body. It's time to get rid of such misconceptions and understand the role of the sun in our lives.
A
ccording to astrological texts, all nine planets are a part of this universe created by God. These planets work on the principle of 'cause and consequence', which means that the lives of people are affected by their actions. Their characteristics, physical feature, behaviour, likes and dislikes are all determined by a specific combination of these planets.
Importance of Sunlight in Daily Routine To understand the importance of the sun in our daily life, imagine for a minute your existence without it. The whole planet would be thrown into darkness and no one would be able to see anything. Cultivation would come to a standstill and, in the absence of plants or crops, there would be no oxygen to breath and no water to drink. Without the sun, all necessary life-giving elements would be destroyed.
Sunlight & Its Effect on Health Sunlight affects physical and mental health in many ways. Some of these are elaborated below: It is key to the process of photosynthesis that is required for plant growth The body clock responds according to the movement of the sun It increases secretion of serotonin that protects us from depression Sunlight helps kill different bacteria or germs It enhances immunity and keeps us protected from infections Exposure to sunlight is beneficial in many medical conditions, like cardiac disorders,
The sun is known as the king of all the planets because of the vantage position it occupies at the centre of the solar system. It is responsible for the existence of the life force that is integral to all living things on this planet. The sun is also the main source of the digestive fire within our body. Finally, it is responsible for a lot of other things, including lightning in the sky and the light that causes the stars and moon to shine. And let's not forget that the sun drives away darkness and illuminates everything so that we are able perceive their true form. 28 – Paramayu – Apr. 2016
blood circulation, cholesterol problem, and diabetes Sunlight helps in liver related ailments, metabolic dysfunction, and elimination of waste It also works in cancer related to the intestine, breast, blood, prostate, pancreas, and lymphoma It is beneficial in joint and muscular pains and also eases inflammation
Sunlight & Vitamin D To maintain health and to avoid different diseases, exposure to sunlight on a daily basis is important. As the main source of energy, regular and balanced exposure to sun plays a significant role in nurturing and strengthening the bones. It also boosts the production of vitamin D that helps absorb calcium needed for healthy teeth and bones. Deficiency of vitamin D can lead to several complications, including rickets in children, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and poor bone density. In places where the sun appears for a short period of time, people tend to suffer from many health issues. Same goes for those who may not get the opportunity to step outdoors very often. They should consider plantbased sources of vitamin D to make up for the deficit in their body. However, this vitamin is fat-soluble, so you must add fat or oil to your diet to help it dissolve easily in your body.
Sources of Vitamin D Apart from sunlight, there are other plant-based sources that provide this vitamin. Some of them are mentioned below: Curd Mushroom Cheese Fortified grains Oatmeal Whole cereals Soya milk Tofu Almond milk Milk and its products According to medical recommendation, the daily allowance of vitamin D should be between 600 and 4000 International Unit (IU). Now that you've understood the importance of sunlight, open your doors and step out to enjoy its goodness!

HOME DETOX Over a period of time, ama (or toxins) gets accumulated within the body, resulting in diseases. To prevent that from happening, it's necessary to detox your body regularly.
W
hy Detox is Important
We live in a time where advancement in modern technology and rise of machines have contributed significantly to pollution in the environment. The body and the mind are constantly exposed to pollutants in the form of harmful food, chemicals, radiation, atmospheric changes etc. Some of these we are able to metabolise and throw out of the body. Others remain undigested and form ama or toxins, which do not get thrown out of the body. This waste material circulates throughout the body, eventually getting stored in the weak spots, leading to a host of disorders. Therefore, to enjoy good health, it is important to go in for detoxification periodically.
Who Needs Detox? Ama can form in anyone - the elderly or the young, the healthy or the unhealthy. This means detox is for everyone. Those who are sick can detox their body as part of their treatment. People who are healthy should do it as 36 – Paramayu – Apr. 2016
a preventive measure. How to Apply Detox Jiva has come up with a very simple way to cleanse the body naturally. The process can be done at home under the guidance of a Jiva doctor. The home detox program includes a three-dimensional approach: 1. Destabilize the toxins from the deeper cells of the body 2. Increase the body's capacity to burn ama or toxins 3. Expel them from the body through purgation These objectives are achieved through the use of very simple techniques like: ● Oiling: This is done both externally and internally. Some popular methods of
Yoga and meditation and a restricted diet are also part of the detoxifying program. They help achieve better balance in the energy flow of the body. This, in turn, makes the natural healing systems of the body function normally.
oiling are self-massage, oil pulling, and putting two drops of oil in each ear and the nostrils. ● Steam Therapy: Steam can be taken in through sauna or hot water showers. ● Herbal Teas: Jiva herbal tea and other natural decoctions help clean the srotas (channels) of different tissues. ● Jiva anti-ama or Aampachak mixture: It helps the body burn ama. ● Detox formula: This formula removes the toxins from the body. In addition to this, the program calls for yoga, meditation, and a restricted diet. They help achieve better balance in the energy flow of the body. This, in turn, makes the natural healing systems of the body function normally. Give your body a new lease on life with the Jiva Home Detox Kit. If interested, speak to a doctor and get your kit along with proper instructions on how to use it.
“Yog bhagaye rog, nitya isko apanyen Is path par chalne wale, jag mein khushiyan paayen.”
