41. Doctor Granny – Mental Stress

The Mind and its

Effects on Health – Dr. Partap Chauhan

T A healthy mind equips a person to cope with the adverse effects of stress in his/her personal and professional life. Dr. Chauhan explores the relation between the mind and our health and provides some valuable tips for mental well-being in the process.

his might have happened with you as well. You experience many times of symptoms and problems in your body, you go to the doctor and go through all the tests. Strangely, the reports show that there is nothing wrong with you. The doctor might even recommend you to consult a psychiatrist. No wonder modern medical science is rigid in its perspective and limited in scope, but even then, it considers that an imbalance in the mind is manifested in physical symptoms. Today, we are seeing an unprecedented increase in the occurrence of autoimmune diseases, a condition that has no explanation in modern medical science. All that we know about autoimmune diseases is that the body's own immunity system starts to attack a part of our body system, identifying it as an enemy or invader. This is a very mysterious disease of which the answer perhaps lies in our mind. Ayurveda considers both the mind and body as the source of disease. The Charaka Samhita even goes on to say that diseases

originating in the body affect the mind and vice versa. According to Ayurveda, there are two chief factors or causes that are responsible for disease: Pragyaapradha or the misuse of intelligence; and asatyemindriya arth or the misuse of the senses.

Mind's role in disease:In Ayurveda the emphasis is always on the eradication of diseases from its roots. Hence, understanding the role and functioning of the mind becomes very important in treating diseases. As the state of the body is defined by the state of the three doshas, namely vata, pitta and kapha; the state of the mind is defined by the state of the three gunas, known as sattva, rajas and tamas. While a dominant sattva guna signifies a healthy mind, a dominant rajas and tamas guna denotes a diseased and imbalanced mind. A mind dominated by rajas and gunas is influenced by lust, anger, greed, obsession, envy and pride, which lead to various diseases of the mind and body. An excess of the above two gunas confuse and corrupt the mind, leading to 'pragyaapradha' or the misuse of intelligence. In autoimmune diseases, in which the body's own immunity attacks the body, the characteristics are similar to the body losing intelligence and going out of control. Perhaps, the causes of this disease can be explored within the mind.

Ways to keep your mind healthy:To keep our mind healthy, we have to increase the elements of sattva in our diet, lifestyle and thoughts. There are simple ways to start towards the path of mental well-being. We should eat fresh fruits, fresh food, dry fruits, salads, fresh milk, honey and pure water. Also, adequate amount of fresh air and exercise is important, as well as spiritual pursuits, and pure and positive thoughts. According to Ayurveda, not only what we eat, but what we see (television,

films), what we listen (songs, talk shows, people), and what we think—all these factors influence our mind and body. Hence, we should maintain the qualities of sattva or purity in what we eat, see, listen, think and act.

How to strengthen your mind:If your mind is weak, you cannot fight disease. On the other hand, one with mental strength can overcome disease against all odds. Hence, it is important that you have a healthy and positive state of mind to fight and overcome disease. If you follow the below given daily regimen or dincharyas, it can help you maintain positive thoughts, boost your morale and strengthen your mind.

Sleeping and eating on time and waking up before sunrise. Regular Yoga, Pranayama and meditation.

Head massage with sesame oil.

Maintaining cleanliness of the body and the sense organs. There are many herbs and medications in Ayurveda that nourishes the brain and helps to maintain balance in our mental functions. Panchakarma therapies such as shiroabhyanga and nasya also help us to keep the mind healthy. For a happy and relaxed mind it is important to maintain positive personal and professional relationships, and a clean and healthy diet and lifestyle. Therefore, if you or any one of your closed ones is suffering from disease, you should keep in mind that just popping pills is not enough. You also need to keep you mind happy, calm and healthy. As per Ayurveda, a healthy person is one who is mentally peaceful, cheerful in spirit, and healthy in body. You can be that person if you resolve to start from today, right away from this moment.

T

he mind, body, senses and soul are integral parts of the unit called a human being. They are interrelated and influenced by each other. Probably the oldest example of this mutual influence is found in the first chapter of Bhagavad Gita. In the events leading to the battle of Mahabharata, Arjuna, the greatest warrior on the side of the Pandavas, was ready to fight after the conches were blown, signaling the commencement of the battle. But when Arjuna saw that the assembled warriors on both sides were his own relatives, including his grandfather Bhisma and honorable guru Dronacharya, he started to have doubts in his mind. He lost the enthusiasm to fight and became confused. Soon he felt that his head began reeling and his body began to tremble. His mouth was parched and he felt feverish. Arjuna felt so

weak physically that he could not hold his bow. He was even unable to stand. His weak mental state had a visible influence on his physical body.

How the mind influences the body The Vedas consider that our physical body is the crystallization of our mental tendencies carried over from our past lives. Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita (8.6) that our mental state at the time of death determines our next body. This is true not only at the time of death but at other times also. A person's state of mind represents his identity. A change in mind brings a change in behavior, including the physical appearance. The face of person is said to be the index of the mind since it changes with the change in emotions such as anger, sadness and joy.

Detachment paves way for tranquility – Dr. Satyanarayana Dasa

Detachment from the material world is the essence of every spiritual philosophy in the world. Dr. Dasa explains how detachment can pave way for peace, harmony and prosperity in our lives.

Indeed it is not only the face but the whole body which undergoes a change with the change in the state of mind. This is most visible in case of an angry person who experiences an increased rate of breathing, pulse rate and blood pressure because of his/her emotions.

The deleterious effects of stress Stress, if experienced regularly, has a very detrimental effect on a person's health. When under stress a person's digestive system becomes slow or even turned off. Moreover, a person under stress may eat more than one's regular diet to feel a sense of relief from stress, or may resort to smoking and drinking. All this further burdens the weakened digestive system which results in formation of ama or toxins in the form of undigested food. If ama is not cleared from the body it will clog the channels in one's body leading to various types of ailments. According to the World Health Organisation, stress will be the greatest danger to health in the future. Our lives are becoming more and more stressed. Children, adults, youth and grown-ups are all under the vice like grip of stress. School examinations, deadlines and work pressure, noise and traffic, broken family relations, job insecurity, inflation, insufficient income, daily news on the TV and newspapers, all lead to unwanted stress in our daily life.

Going beyond the body & mind According to Ayurveda when one's mind is centered and peaceful, the digestive systems functions well and one does not have food cravings. But this is a rare phenomenon in today's world. Most people do not know how to handle stress – or rather they don't know how to handle stress in the right way. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Sri Krishna teaches Arjuna to perform one's duty while maintaining an evenness of mind. Attachment to actions and their results is the root cause of stress. This is inevitable as long as we keep on misidentifying ourselves only with our body and mind. Ayurveda clearly states that life is a combination of body, senses, mind and the conscious self (atma or soul). Among these four things atma is our real identity and other three are acquired identities for this particular life. However, out of ignorance of our conscious self we consider our self only a combination of body, senses and the mind. This puts us in the dualities of love and hate, like and dislike, gain and loss, victory and defeat, and success and failure.

ask oneself - why one is worrying about a particular action, situation, relation or object or person? Can worrying about these things really provide a solution? If the answer is no, which invariably is, then we should consciously give up such worries. Many a times we are in constant anxiety which serves us no good purpose. If something is inevitable, beyond our control then it is unwise to worry about it.

We should not apply our emotions and thoughts on useless things and things that are beyond our control. Much of what we worry, think and feel emotional about is not of much value. We must stop all such useless thoughts and worries by using our intellect through introspection. Thus, we can stay peaceful in mind and healthy in body.

Significance of Makar Sankranti in India

Lord Krishna advises us to rise above these dualities. Instead of craving the pleasure arising from objects and the respective senses, he recommends us to be satisfied in our inner being. The pleasure arising from senses are temporary, limited and condition one to material objects, situation and relations. Ultimately, this leads to suffering and nothing else. There is a dire need for this wisdom and perspective in today's world, more than any other time in the history of mankind.

Spiritual Significance

How to achieve detachment One can cultivate detachment by beginning with introspection, known as swadhyay. We must observe our own mind without getting tangled in the web of thoughts, emotions and desires arising inside. One should regularly

Makar Sankranti conveys the message of detaching your mind from material belongings and dedicating it to God. It is a moment or an occasion when a person takes a resolute vow to dedicate his life to God—seeking him and finding him in all his endeavors. This day is considered an opportune moment to dedicate one's life to God.

Ayurvedic significance It's customary to donate and consume til (sesame seeds) and food items made from gur (jaggery) in

Makar Sankranti. As per Ayurveda, sesame seeds are consumed during this time of the year to prevent aggravation of vata. If you do not take til and gur during the peak of winter season, which is Makar Sankranti (it is celebrated every year on 14th of January), kapha diseases will aggravate in our body during the spring season and vata diseases in the rainy season. Til and gur is also donated during this festival so that the poor, who can't afford buying them, can also benefit from these products.

Hey Rohan, Why don't you concentrate on your studies!

How to enhance your kid's

How could you forget that lesson I taught you only yesterday!

Mental Powers Wondering how to teach your child to achieve mental focus, concentration and clarity in this world full of distractions? Make use of these natural herbs and simple tips to enhance your child's mental powers.

Why are you so inattentive?

D

o those quotes above sounds familiar to you? Perhaps it does if you are a mother. Today's world is full of distractions because they are so many things to do, listen, eat, play, learn and experience. If you being an adult can't handle all the onslaught of distractions, how can you expect a little kid to be untouched? Though today's kids are lucky to have the best of technology to make learning a fun experience, there mental state hangs in a precarious balance. Now they have the internet, mobile phones, video games and a plethora of gadgets that vie for their attention every moment of their waking lives. Their problems are again compounded by the types of foods and beverages that they take. Cold foods and beverages such as ice creams, cold drinks and dairy products increase vata in the body. In Ayurveda

an aggravated state of vata leads to memory loss, which is the reason why your child doesn't remember his/her lessons.

Your child should avoid these things to maintain optimum mental health: Excessive intake of ice creams, chocolates, cold drinks, dairy products and other cold foods. Items such as chips, cookies, junk food, processed and canned foods. Foods that lack prana or life force such as meat, stale food or food that is not freshly cooked. Waking up late and playing games or watching TV late into the night. Excessive loud music and stimulating beverages like tea, coffee and hot chocolates.

Ayurveda and your child's memory Ayurveda provides a safe and lasting impact on your child's mental health by improving memory and mental performance. Psychological health or a healthy state of mind depends on the sense organs and their functions such as awareness, attention, concentration, assimilation, retention and recall. In Ayurveda there could be many causes for poor memory and IQ, the primary ones being malnutrition and chemical imbalances in the brain functions which could be physiological or influenced by drugs and antibodies. Vitiated kapha dosha is responsible for memory problems because it leads to a dull mind and disinterest in things. Also, vitiated vata dosha can lead to stress and confusion, leading to the obstruction of knowledge and memory since vata is

responsible for all nervous functions and memory. Therefore, in order to improve your child's memory both vata and kapha should be balance in his physiology. A balance state of vata and kapha helps in enhancing memory while a balanced pitta dosha plays a major role in improving mental sharpness and IQ. To ensure that your child maintains an optimum mental health till adulthood, you need to start early with the right diet and inculcate the right habits in him/her.

Ayurvedic herbs to improve memory Brahmi – From ages, Brahmi has been considered a tonic for the brain. It improves brain power and helps to make the memory sharp and clear. Due to its calming and nurturing properties, Brahmi is also very useful for highly stressful work or study environments. It is an ideal herb for students and people who are involved in research and academic work. You can also try Jiva Brahmi Tablet, a wonder product for improving your child's mental faculties. Shankhpushpi – This herb provides enormous benefits for brain health and cognitive functions. Shankhpushpi falls under the category of 'medhya rasayana' in Ayurveda, which means it is effective in boosting memory. This fact has been accepted by modern science as well that the herb improves memory, concentration and cognitive function. Students can use this herb for enhancing memory and relieving exam stress. Kushmand (White Gourd) – Kushmand acts as a brain tonic and is effective in improving memory. This medicinal plant is also used as a vegetable and acts as

a tranquiliser and therefore useful in schizophrenia, debility and memory loss.

A

Vacha - Vacha is a herb which is believed to enhance intelligence according to Ayurveda. I

n Ayurveda, sleep is known as the three pillars of health which provides the foundation for physical, mental and emotional well-being. When it comes to a beautiful skin, sleep plays a vital role because it is the most rejuvenating of all beauty treatments. Sushruta, the legendary Ayurveda expert, compared sleep to Bishnu's role in creation – that of a creator and the one who provides nourishment. Chronic lack of sleep, or poor-quality sleep, has an incredibly negative effect on the way we feel - and on the way we look. When we are asleep, our cells rebuild and repair themselves (the human growth hormone (HGH) functions only at night). If you don't sleep, this function is impaired. Note: HGH is produced mostly during the deep sleep phase.

If you sleep badly, you are likely to become stressed, and this can cause the capillaries to tighten up, affecting the flow of nutrients to the skin and scalp and causing the skin and hair to look dull. But what is a good night's sleep and how it affects your looks? Let's find out.

A good night's sleep A good night's sleep means a healthy, restful sleep when you are able to fall asleep easily as you switch off the lights. The goal is to achieve deep slumber of 6-8 hours without the help of medication. You should wake up rested and refreshed in the morning. Your immune system, fat metabolism, muscle growth, cell repair and anti-ageing functions, all happen during the night. Therefore, it's important that you sleep soundly to look and feel beautiful.

Powerhouse of protein Almonds are concentrated in protein. A quarter cup of almond contains 7.62 grams of protein – while a typical egg contains just 5.54 grams. About 20 percent of raw almond is high quality protein, a third of which are essential amino acids.

Less calorie content Food scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently published a finding almonds have about 20 percent fewer calories than previously documented. Though full of nutritional power, almond is very low in calorie content compared to other sources of protein.

Sleep is one of the best, natural beauty treatments available to you. Don't cut on your sleep if you want well-toned, radiant and healthy glowing skin. Here are some valuable tips to help you look beautiful like a sleeping beauty!

For a healthy mind and body, it is necessary to have regulated and sound sleeping habits. Staying up late aggravates vata and causes many vata-related disorders. Therefore, it is very important for your beauty and your overall health to sleep early and wake up early.

How bad sleep can affect your skin? When you lose sleep quality, it shows on your face in the form of tired skin sags, eye bags and dullness. Lack of sleep causes blood vessels to dilate, causing the look of dark circles. While you sleep, your skin renews itself. New skin cells grow and replace older cells. If you don't sleep well, your skin doesn't get the opportunity to renew itself. It leads to premature aging. Unhealthy sleep leads to the reduction of ojas (vitality), the vital nectar of life which is extracted from food. Staying up past 10 PM aggravates vata and pitta, and can promote skin dryness, redness, and a drawn, tired look the next day. Sleeping past 6 AM aggravates kapha and promotes fluidretention, puffiness and a dull look.

Avoid cell phones and computer use after 9 PM. Eat a light meal before going to sleep. Take an early morning walk in the rising sun. It is one of the best-kept secrets of beauty.

Tips for good sleep and good looks Go to bed at a regular time. Set the alarm for the same time each day even weekends - to develop a regular sleep-wake rhythm. Make sure the bedroom is dark. No coffee, tea or hot chocolate before bed. Instead drink hot milk. Try deep breathing, or tensing and relaxing different groups of muscles around the body. Don't exercise immediately before going to bed. Go to bed by 10 PM and latest by 11 PM. Arise by 6 AM. Avoid cell phones and computer use after 9 PM. Eat a light meal before going to sleep Take an early morning walk in the rising sun. It is one of the best-kept secrets of beauty.

T

he human mind is one of the most complex and beautiful part of creation. Indian philosophy has always given precedence to the power of the mind in one's life. It is now a known fact that the state of the mind plays a big role in the prevention and management of various disorders. According to modern science, mental disorders or psychological problems chiefly arise from trauma or a chemical imbalance in the brain. Whereas in Ayurveda, it is believe to occur due to an imbalance of the two

gunas – rajas and tamas. When these two gunas affects the mind and intelligence, it creates an imbalance, resulting in a variety of mental disorders.

Astrological configurations related to psychological problems: ď‚&#x; Affliction of the following planets:

Moon, which signifies the mind; Mercury, which signifies the nervous system; and Jupiter, which signifies wisdom and discernment.

Astrology &

Mental Disorders Jyotishacharya Shanker Vats

Home remedies for a sound sleep Have a glass of whole milk (full cream) with green cardamom powder before going to bed. Have 1 teaspoon of licorice root (mulethi) powder with a glass of milk on an empty stomach in the morning. Have 15 ml juice of green coriander with 1 teaspoon of honey twice a day. Massage your feet with lukewarm mustard oil 2-3 times a day and before going to bed. Have a head massage with lukewarm oil before going to bed. Mix 1/8 teaspoon of roasted cumin seed powder with the pulp of 1 banana and eat it before going to bed.

An individual's tendency to mental disorders can be identified through the position of the planets and signs in the birth chart. Below we will explore the various configurations in the birth chart to identify mental disorders, which the author believes can help us in taking preventive measures.

 An afflicted Lord of the fifth house. The fifth

house corresponds to thinking, logic and wisdom.  An afflicted ascendant and/ or Aries, both which

indicates the head.  Kemadruma Yoga – This is a condition which

occurs when the Moon has no planets in either of the signs surrounding it. When there is no planet in the 2nd or the 12th house from the Moon, it denotes an issue with the soundness of the mind.

Mental disorders are of many types. The chief ones among them are: Phobia (Fear) A phobia is an abnormal fear about a thing, situation, place, animal or anything conceivable by the human mind.

Astrological signs: 1. Mars is the planet that signifies courage and strength. If Mars is positioned in a debilitated sign and in aspect or conjunction with the ascendant, it makes a person fearful and nervous. 2. Jupiter in conjunction with Saturn in the birth chart makes a person prone to excess fear and phobia. 3. If a person born in the night has a weak Saturn in the tenth house, it makes a person fearful.

Mania Mania is an abnormally elated mental state, characterized by feelings of euphoria, lack of inhibitions, racing thoughts, talkativeness, risk taking, irritability, and diminished need for sleep.

Astrological signs: 1. If Moon or the Sun is afflicted by a malefic planet and in aspect with Rahu and Ketu. 2. Moon and Rahu is placed in the twelfth house and there is more than one malefic planet in the eighth house. 3. If Saturn is positioned in its afflicted or hostile sign with Rahu and Ketu, and is in conjunction or aspect with an afflicted Moon and Saturn.

Depression Depression is a disturbance in mood, thought, and body characterized by feelings of sadness, despair, loneliness, self-doubt and guilt.

Astrological signs: 1. If the fourth house contains a malefic planet or is in aspect with a malefic planet. 2. The ascendant signifies the soul of a person. If an afflicted planet is in the ascendant, it shows lack of confidence. A malefic planet in aspect with the first house may lead to depression. 3. The fifth house signifies intelligence. If the fifth house is in aspect with a malefic planet or in conjunction, it may lead to depression.

Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder that distorts the way a person thinks, acts, expresses emotions, perceives reality, and relates to others. People with schizophrenia often have problems functioning normally in society, at work and at school, and in relationships.

Astrological signs: 1. If Moon and Rahu and Ketu is positioned in the fourth house or if the Moon has any type of relation with Rahu and Ketu in the fourth house. Or if the Lord of the first house and the fourth house is afflicted by Rahu and Ketu it may signify schizophrenia. 2. If Moon is placed in the nakshatra (star) of Rahu and Ketu. 3. If the first house is afflicted by Rahu and Ketu and the fourth house from the ascendant or Moon is afflicted by Rahu and Ketu.

In today's fast-paced and competitive world, mental disorder are now a common problem. We can avoid and manage these problems by regular practice of meditation, Pranayama and Yoga.

Ayurveda has always considered that diet plays an important role in defining the state of the mind. Clinical research in modern medical science has also corroborated this fact time and again. Below we will try to figure out the relation between the diet and the mind.

A

s everything on earth has a primary guna, diet may be classified into the categories of sattvic, rajasic or tamasic. Anything we hear, smell, watch, taste or touch may be divided into one of these three groups. Mind balance in Ayurveda means modifying the mind guna from tamasic or rajasic to sattvic through a modifying diet. That is, choosing those foods and activities that are sattvic in nature in preference to those that are rajasic or tamasic. With consistent and dedicated attention to diet, environment and sensory experiences, total mind balance can be achieved. What we are eating now is very different from what we use to eat just 2 decades ago. Food production and manufacturing techniques, changing lifestyles and increasing access to processed food, has brought down the rate of fresh and nutritious produce that our ancestors use to enjoy. At the same time our intake of fat, sugar, alcohol and additives has gone much higher.

Ayurvedic diet for a

Healthy mind

Recent evidence suggests that good nutrition is essential for our mental health and that a number of mental health conditions may be influenced by dietary factors. The relation between the diet and mind Recent evidence suggests that good nutrition is essential for our mental health and that a number of mental health conditions may be influenced by dietary factors. Recent research have shown that food plays an important role in the development, management and prevention of mental health problems such as depression, schizophrenia, ADHD and Alzheimer's disease. Clinical studies in India have demonstrated a direct relation between sattvic food and sattvic behaviour and qualities. Also, the same has been seen in studies in the West, where links between diet and behavior has been observed in numerous controlled studies.

Diet tips for a balanced mind:Avoid food without chetana or prana A healthy diet consists of whole food, eaten in a natural state. Peeling or cooking is the only exception to ensure digestion and assimilation. Foods that are frozen, processed, genetically modified, and laced with preservatives, artificial flavors and additives are not recommended in Ayurveda. Such food lacks in chetana (living intelligence) and prana (vital life-energy) – it disturbs the intellect and diminishes mental functions.

Eat a Wide Variety of Food Eat a wide variety of food for balanced nutrition—whole grains, lentils and pulses, vegetables, fruits, dairy, nuts, healthy oil or ghee, spices and pure water. Ayurveda recommends that you include all of the six tastes at each main meal you eat—sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent. Avoid aerated drinks as they interfere

with the absorption of nutrients by the body. According to Ayurveda, each meal should be a feast for all of your eyes. When your plate reflects an appealing variety of colours, textures, flavour and aromas, your digestive juices start flowing freely in anticipation and your body, mind and heart are all fulfilled by the eating experience.

My New Year Resolution!

Add a Little Fat and Some Proteins Although excessive intake of fats is considered harmful, do not count out fat entirely from your diet since essential fatty acids are vital for our brain the solid part of which is primarily composed of fat. The synapses in the brain that are involved in creating and maintaining memories are formed from fats. As the body does not produce fats, it is important for us to get them from external sources such as our daily intake of food. Ayurveda prefers ghee (clarified butter) over other forms of oils and fats. The use of almond oil too is good for your mental health. Similarly, protein is also important for the brain as it stimulates the neurotransmitters that are associated with memory. Therefore, eating natural food products containing high-protein contents can improve verbal and non-verbal memory together with mental flexibility. The list of high-protein food items may include soyabean, all varieties of dals, gram and moong sprouts, milk, yogurt, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, beet, carrots, celery, corn and cucumber. Since Ayurveda advocates sattvic food, it is always better to get your proteins from vegetarian food only.

Switch to Natural Antioxidants The brain is susceptible to damage by free radicals produced due to a variety of factors such as stress, pollution, germs, chemicals, radiation, smoking, alcohol, and exposure to excessive heat or cold. Free radicals have been widely linked to disease and aging. Antioxidants are, therefore, crucial for the effective functioning of the brain. The best way to provide your system with antioxidants is through whole, uncooked plants in the form of fruits, vegetables and sprouts.

Shirodhara Releases mental & physical stress S

hirodhara is one of the most effective purification and rejuvenation therapies in Panchakarma. It is an amazingly relaxing therapy which gently releases stress and tension from the mind and body.

Step 2. A rhythmic stream of medicated oils at a specified temperature from a specified height is poured on the middle of the forehead. The warm oil helps to calm aggravated vata in the nervous system.

The word shirodhara if broken into two denotes “shiro” meaning head and “dhara” which mean stream. Therefore, shirodhara is an even flowing (streaming) of oil over the forehead for an extended period of time for relaxation, rejuvenation and healing. This technique aims to bring physical and emotional balance by rejuvenating the spirit and preserving health.

Step 3. The procedure lasts for 30-35 minutes and is followed by an Ayurvedic head massage. The practitioner will work on the specific marma points to help stabilise nervous function, inducing calmness, and helping the mind become bright and clear.

There are four types of specialized forms of shirodhara known as tailadhara, ksheeradhara, takradhara and jaladhara. It is a form of external snehana or oleation for the body.

How shirodhara works Shirodhara works primarily on the vata nadi sanstha or the nervous system, as it is referred to in Ayurveda. Shirodhara is traditionally used to calm the nerves, balance vata constitutions, strengthen the nerves, release stored emotions, and purify the mind. In Ayurvedic treatment, it is considered an important tool in the pursuit of higher states of consciousness. Shirodhara is one of the best therapies for providing relief in migraine.

octor Dadi says – “stress is a word that I hardly remember using in my time, we were constantly busy working and use to do a lot of physical work. But I never remember I had stress. This was maybe because we were eating a healthy diet and were physically active.” Nowadays mental stress has become a common problem, whether you are at home or in office you are constantly juggling between multiple things—multitasking. We run here and there and then grab a cup of tea or coffee to soothe the mental stress—but it only makes us feel worse because these beverages are stimulants and it does nothing to relax.

Nature never intended us to be perpetually stressed. When we are stressed the adrenal glands secretes a hormone known as cortisol, which kicks in when the body requires an emergency response. Prolonged levels of cortisol in the bloodstream, also known as the 'stress hormone', have many negative effects, including: Impaired mental performance. Blood sugar imbalances. Higher blood pressure. Decreased bone density. Lowered immunity and more.

In Ayurveda, the mind has three states or gunas, namely, sattva (wisdom, purity), rajas (action, passion) and tamas (inertia, ignorance). Mental stress increases when sattva decreases and rajas and tamas increase. debility. Now here is Dr. Granny
