World Class Diving & Snorkelling at Julian Rocks with Sundive Byron Bay
Sundive is Byron Bay’s only Padi 5 Star dive centre They have been taking divers out to explore Julian Rocks for over 30 years, offers daily diving and snorkelling trips as well as Try Scuba experiences for non-divers and all Padi courses
Julian Rocks has been protected for over 35 years and is one of the top 20 dives sites in the world according to National Geographic and one of the top 10 snorkelling spots in Australia Julian Rocks offers an abundance of big marine life and dramatic seasonalchanges that create a unique level of biodiversity year round. It is home to many different shark and ray species and is one of the few sites in the world where shark encounters can be guaranteed
As the temperatures rise above 22 degrees from December until May, leopard sharks migrate to Julian Rocks forming, possibly, the world’s largest aggregation They are the stars of the summer diving, gracefully gliding between divers with their beautiful spotted patterns In this season manta rays also make guest star appearances coming to the rocks for a clean and to check out the divers
Around mid-May, when temperatures drop below 22 degrees the leopard sharks head north to warmer waters and are replaced by the more temperate grey nurse sharks Ferocious looking with their irregular pointy teeth, grey nurse sharks are actually extraordinarily placid and very chilled around the divers

Three different species of wobbegong sharks are also resident at the rock year round and there are so many that it is impossible not to encounter few of them
The other iconic year-round residents are 3 species of sea turtles Young green turtles hang in the shallows close to the top of the rocks and delight the snorkelers with very close encounters, hawksbills grace the coral bommies and huge pre-historic looking loggerheads have called the rock home for longer than Sundive existed
As well as the big animal action, Julian Rocks thrives with huge schools of fish, stunning corals and sponges and an incredibly variety in smaller life with an array of nudibranchs, shrimps, octopi, morays and other unusual critters
