Editor’s Welcome Welcome to Byron, great place to fall in love with, the hardest place to leave. I have travelled throughout Australia for the past 21 years, promoting our destination which is Byron Bay, as Publisher of the What’s On the Visitors Guide Byron and Beyond and also the Byron Bay and Northern Rivers NSW Accommodation Guide to attract visitors to come and stay in our picturest Byron region. Our visitation is on the increase year by year. Please be respectful to our locals and fellow visitors. With approx. 2.2 million people visiting last year. Byron has become very popular, and has groups visiting from the very young to the very old, from corporate executives, mega superstars to backpackers and buskers. Many come to revisit and refresh old memories of having a wonderful time in Byron in past years, or to visit and catch up with friends and family. Others want to rejuvenate ones wellbeing by going for a surf at one of our many world class beaches, with beautiful white sand under foot or relaxing on the beach soaking up a tan, or visiting one of our many massage theropists, or to simply just cheer up, slow down, chill out, relax and unwind! Amongst Byron’s huge variety of activities to choose from eg kayaking with the dolphins. This activity is great fun for the whole family to enjoy. Be a hero and donate to our Dolphin Research Australia fund who do absolutely amazing things with limited resources solely to benefit these wonderful aquatic creatures who live in our Cape Byron Marine Park. These donations are very much appreciated. Some other activities that are great fun with friends to enjoy are ballooning or skydiving over Byron or snorkelling/scuba diving at Julian Rocks- we have a unique and diverse underwater world to explore just
3k’s off our main beach. Have a look at our top 10 must do activities list on page 9. Horse riding for the kids and the farmers markets are not to be missed. Pick up some of our region’s best organically grown fruit and produce grown locally by our local farmers in some of the richest volcanic soil on the planet, having a taste sensation all of its own, which you will not forget! Byron has many art galleries to visit. Some are tucked away in secluded settings, creating the mood to appreciate unique creations of art and culture. Some glass creations are only found in Byron and beyond. Visit Brunswick Heads, the backdrop for the latest filming of “Sea Change” which has kept the locals a buzz with excitement. Bangalow is a surreal village, great shopping, is worth visiting, meet the locals. Mullum is unique and worth exploring, the gateway to Crystal Castle. Remember SURF SAFETY to swim between the flags, don’t swim after consuming alcohol, swim with friends, look after each other when partying, be tolerant of others opinions and have fun when in Byron.

Less travel time... World first Solar Train running in Byron Bay It was three years on 16 December since the Byron Solar Train took her first passengers as a fully solar powered train. 70 years since she was first built using aircraft technology developed during the second world war. That technology – which fused an aluminium body onto a lightweight steel carriage frame – is why she is lighter than “light rail”. The solar train service generates far more energy than required for the nine return trips daily between the burgeoning North Beach precinct and Byron Town Centre. In fact an incredible 72.9% of the power generated so far has been exported to the grid. All thanks to a 4.6 billion year old power source. The service operates every day except Christmas Day, taking locals and visitors along the scenic coastal track past littoral rainforest, endangered coastal wetland and over Belongil Creek, part of Cape Byron Marine Park.

Located at Australia’s most easterly point, this walk offers a stunning vista of migrating whales as well as resident dolphins and leopard sharks. Beaches
N W
E S
BEAC HES Byron Bay has some of the most beautiful beaches in Australia
01 Belongil to The Wreck
02 Main Beach to Clarkes
This beach starts at the western side of the Main Beach car park and heads west away from the Lighthouse. Another great wave in Byron Bay that was formed when ‘The Wollongbar’ was washed from the old Byron Bay jetty during the 1920s. ‘The Wollongbar’ was then used as the major transport for all the tourists coming from Sydney to visit The Bay. You can still see the ‘rudder’ and ‘the boilers’ sticking out of the sand. Here both Lefts and Rights break on sandbanks that are always there because of The Wreck. From here, all the way along Belongil Beach gets its good share of waves. It is great for both the experienced surfer and the beginner. The waves vary from fast hollow dumping waves, to soft spilling waves, dependant on what the swell and sandbanks are doing. It will pick up most swells from the north to the south and likes a west to south west wind but also a south east is surfable. The sweep is here if the swell is here.
This beach runs from the end of The Pass back down to the carpark at the Byron Bay Surf Life Saving Club. This is Byron Bay’s main patrolled beach. The waves here are often fast and hollow but can often get small spilling waves depending on how big the swell is. There are both Lefts and Rights here, as long as the sandbanks are in good shape. There are often rocks along here that come and go with the sand flow. It likes the wind to be from the south east to south west, and will pick up most swells. The sweep often comes with the swell, so you have to look for an exit point before you get to the rocky car park, otherwise you will get back to the beach in front of The Wreck, past the rocks.

03 The Pass
05 Tallow Beach
The most famous wave in the Bay, where you have all extremes in one wave, from the point, which is hollow and fast breaking all the way past the rocks, and you must be experienced. Once past the rocks, it will break towards Clarks Beach, where the waves are more spilling and more suited for beginners.
Tallow Beach is the long open beach on the southern side of the lighthouse. It is an open beach that will pick up all swells. It should only be surfed by experienced surfers, unless it is very, very small. The waves are fast and hollow, but can sometimes be spilling waves. It likes all winds from the North East, North West to South West. The waves will break, no matter how small the surf is … Lefts and Rights. The south swell should be avoided, as this will push you onto and around the rocks. There are always rips and currents along this beach.
04 Watego’s Beach Wategos Beach is the most easterly beach in the Bay. It is very popular with long boarders and is a great family beach. The waves are mostly spilling and will break all the way to The Pass. All swells will get there, except a strong south swell. There is often a sweep (side-shore current) along this beach that will carry you towards the rocks and ‘The Pass’. You must always watch for an exit point to avoid being carried past the end of the sand, otherwise you must keep surfing to ‘The Pass’. 13

Learn To Surf
Having a go at surfing is at the top of the must do list when visiting Byron Bay. Don’t just jump onto any surf school bus for your lessons, make sure your bus stops in town for surfing at the famous Clarkes or Belongil beaches that have made Byron Bay “the place” for the best lessons. Also although it’s tempting to go to your local surf shop and buy the latest pro model, the reality is that the modern short board is virtually impossible to learn on. It is hard to control, not very buoyant and hard to paddle. Surf with BlackDog Surfing to get the best waves, on the right board in the bay on the day. BlackDog Surfing have more local knowledge & local experience than any other surf school in town. The owners are on the beach each day & the team of instructors are the best in the bay. They know where to go to find the safest waves on the day & will not take you surfing when the surf is too big and dangerous for you.
THEY WILL ORGANISE YOUR LESSON/S AND HAVE YOU CATCHING WAVES IN NO TIME
All the instructors are totally qualified and experienced local surfers that help you in the surf 100% of the lesson and are committed to being safe and having heaps of fun. Everything you need is provided. All you need to do is bring a positive attitude, enthusiasm and a smile! The one thing that all participants have in common is how much they love the sensation of riding their wave!

The Lighthouse

LIGH
Meand world class
CAT_FOOD_TACO
The Lighthouse… Meander through rainforest and world class beaches to the lighthouse. The light that shines by night over Cape Byron Marine Park emanates from a tower as famous as the town of Byron Bay itself. Built at the turn of the 19th century to protect ships passing along the coast, Cape Byron Lighthouse stands resolute on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. Operated by resident keepers until 1989, it’s now automated light is clearly visible from the Byron Bay Township. Take a guided tour of the lighthouse, learn more about this iconic white tower and find out about shipwrecks and stories from the sea in the Maritime Museum which is below the lighthouse and the artwork inside is ‘a must see’. You’ll enjoy some of the best views of the ocean and hinterland including regular sightings of turtles, dolphins. It is the most easterly point of Australia, and one of the best places to see humpback whales as they pass on their annual migration between May and November. Please note • The Maritime Museum is open 10am to 4pm daily • Remember to take your binoculars if you want to whale watch 18
• It can be a busy place on the weekend, so parking might be limited • Parking fees apply
WALKING TRACK Enjoy spectacular coastal views along the Cape Byron walking track that takes you on a hike through rainforest, beach, grassland and clifftops to the lighthouse.
STATE CONSERVATION AREA • It’s a good idea to put sunscreen on before you set out and remember to take a hat and plenty of drinking water • Keep on track, keep away from cliff edges • Take your swimwear as you may like to have a swim on the way You’ll need a good two hours to properly experience the walking track – but it’s so rich in delights, don’t be surprised if you reach the end and feel like doing it again. Unwind and enjoy the view as you walk. The 3.7km loop leads you on a hike through rainforest and across clifftops with stun-

ning views of the ocean and hinterland. En route you’ll wander through the shade of bangalow palms and ancient burrawangs, across kangaroo grasslands, along picturesque beaches and up to Cape Byron Lighthouse.
ACCOMMODATION The four Clarke’s Beach Cottages have direct access to Byron Bay’s main beach and are surrounded by National Park. Staying here is just magnificient, you can wake to ocean views and the sound of crashing surf. Alternatively the two lighthouse cottages where the former keepers used to live have been fully refurbished, heritage listed cottages (circa 1901) makes this a truly unique holiday experience. Be the first to see the sunrise on Australia’s mainland and enjoy watching dolphins, turtles and whales. Watch the whales
As Byron Bay is the most easterly point of Australia, it is here that whales pass by extremely close to the mainland on their journey to the warm, shallow waters of Queensland to give birth to their young and some species are accompanied by the males to mate. Humpback whales are the stars of the annual whale migration and are one of the most common whales you will see. The male humpback whale is famous for its extraordinarily long and complex songs which travel very far throughout the oceans. Get up close to some of the most awe-inspiring marine life on earth and go kayaking with dolphins and turtles on a guided sea kayak tour. Prepare to be amazed, as the whales may pass gracefully nearby. It is important to stay 100 metres from the side of their path and 300 metres if a calf is present. However it is amazing how curious they are and like to come closer to investigate. What an amazing feeling it is to make eye contact with such a wonderful creature.

BEST VIEWING LOCATIONS • Cape Byron Lighthouse • Broken Head Nature Reserve track • Lennox Head – Pat Morton Lookout • Ballina – Main Beach and Shelley Beach • Evans Head – Goanna Headland • Yamba – Pilot Hill and Pippi Beach • Tweed Coolangatta - Point Danger
WAYS TO SPOT A WHALE Seeing a whale ‘blow’ is sometimes the first sign of a whale you will see, when looking out to sea. Whales spray water up to 4 metres into the air! They often travel in groups at an average speed of 10k an hour. So if it is May to July, look a little north of the ‘blow’ to see a whale ‘surface’ or ‘breach’. Look south of the ‘blow’ from August to Sept. While breaching is done by Humpback whales, Southern Right Whales also follow the migration track.

Cape Byron Marine Park
Photography by Jon Natoli
Cape Byron Marine Park extends from Brunswick Heads in the North to Lennox Head in the south and was established to conserve marine life in the region. The Marine Park has many beautiful assets such as small rocky islands, coral communities, riverine estuaries, coastal creeks and lakes and amazing rocky reefs. There are dolphins, fish, seabirds, plants, sponges, corals, anemones and rare/ threatened species such as sea turtles, grey nurse sharks and black cod as well as whales and shorebirds which migrate through the Park and can sometimes be seen from the shore. Like all marine parks in NSW, Cape Byron Marine Park has been zoned to ensure a balance between conservation and public use and enjoyment. Restrictions apply to activities such as commercial and recreational fishing, spear fishing, collecting and anchoring. So remember to get a marine park zoning plan users guide before fishing or collecting in the Park. Paper copies of the guide are available at marine park offices, visitor information centres, accommodation outlets, general stores and fishing supply outlets. The guide is also available for free on smart phones and tablets from the Avenza Map Store and as part of the NSW DPI FishSmart app. To use the Avenza Map download the app from iTunes or Google Play.

Be a hero and donate today !! Donations over $2 are tax deductible
BYRON BAY’S DOLPHINS Byron Bay is home to a resident community of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins who can often be seen from the Cape Byron Headland moving between Tallows Beach and Wategos Beach. This area is their critical habitat as it is where they rest, feed, and care for their young. In an ever-changing world, dolphins face a cocktail of threats from human activities. Please help care for Byron Bay’s dolphins during your stay by respecting their space and following the NSW dolphin watching regulations. Do not approach closer than 50m and 150m if there are calves, do not attempt to touch, or pursue the dolphins as it causes high levels of stress, and leave no litter behind. For over 15 years, the marine conservation charity, Dolphin Research Australia has been researching Byron Bay’s dolphins. For further information about the Bay’s dolphins and the organisation head to www.dolphinresearchaustralia.org.

David made a living from his art during this time, travelling with his wife and two young children with the idea of choosing an ideal location to reside and establish an art gallery. Ultimately he realized that Ballina where he was a junior surf club member, was still the ideal location and returned here in 1972 . He established Mackay Harrison Galleries in 1978 and this year marks his 40th year of operation, during his time in Ballina he was an active member of Ballina apex, in partnership with June Zentfeld established the southern Cross arts festival and assisted in the running as a parent, this ran for thirty years as a fundraiser for the school. He also floated the idea with council of establishing the Maritime museum here, with the Centre piece being the La Balsa Rafts. He formed the La Balsa committee and actively salvaged the rafts from the river to be stored on land along with the Florrie in a place ready for the museum. He established his own foundry and ran this for 17years, casting his bronze figures which at one stage employed eight workers, he now has contracted this out to other foundries and getting back into painting as well as the sculpture.

The Byron area boasts many international cuisines ranging from fine dining in 5 Star restaurants specialising in Seafood; internationally famous Angus beef from Kyogle and Casino (the beef capital of Australia); freshly made pasta creating your favourite Italian dishes; Indonesian and Thai restaurants serving delicious creations and Asian teas, the best tofu burgers in Australia or just good old fashioned fish and chips with views of the beach and live music Friday and Saturday nights.
Elements of Byron has a stunning restaurant “Graze”. Savour the moment as you dine in style, overlooking their spectacular, luxurious, heated pool as a backdrop. Certainly one of the must do’s in the region if you are a food lover is the Sample Food Festival held in early September at the Bangalow Showgrounds. Exhibitors from all corners of the region come to share their wares, their passion and their knowledge, and is a great experience for the discerning food lover. It is a “must for the culinary calendar”, drawing in the best chefs in Australia for the taste of local cuisine. Alternatively we offer a relaxed, shared based degustation style menu. The price is $100 per head and consists of eight (8) different dishes. The beverage list is equally fluid! THE BIGGEST LITTLE TOWN IN AUSTRALIA IS SURE TO BE INSPIRATIONAL AS SOON AS YOU DRIVE IN TO THE VIEW OF MT CHINCOGAN.
Mullumbimby is an Australian town in Byron Shire in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. It promotes itself as “The Biggest Little Town in Australia”. The town lies at the foot of Mount Chincogan in the Brunswick Valley about 9 kilometres (5.5 miles) by road from the coast. At the 2016 census, Mullumbimby and the surrounding area had a population of 3,596 people. Locals refer to the town as “Mullum”. The name “Mullumbimby”, meaning “small round hill”, was given to the district by Aboriginal people. The name is derived from the Bundjalung-Yugambeh dialect mulubinba (possibly also pertaining to a native fern which grew in the vicinity). Mullumbimby is a centre of alternative or counter culture in the Byron Shire. A day out in Mullum is definitely part of the Byron experience.
Food supplied on the day by Mullumbimby Public School at affordable prices. Whilst the event is underway, directly in front of the Mullumbimby Ex-Services club will be family friendly fun and entertainment, including food and drinks. Dust off your running shoes and get ready for a great day out. This event is generally held in September.
SHOP - MULLUMBIMBY HERBALS - The essence of Mullum-
bimby. Mullumbimby Herbals stocks an extensive range of high grade organic herbal and naturopathic medicines. To ensure the optimum strength of their herbal preparations they source the fresh herbs from dedicated local organic growers and manufacture most of their own tinctures using traditional and time tested techniques as well as incorporating the latest and most effective extraction techniques.

EAT DAY - PUNCH & DAISY -You will find Punch and Daisy
EXPLORE- MULLUMBIMBY FARMERS MARKET- every Friday morning 7am-11am, is where you’ll see Mullum at its colourful best. Since its opening in 2010, the market has become the gathering spot for Mullumbimby’s vibrant community, re-inventing the age old tradition of a community market meeting place. Set under magnificent fig trees in the lush foothills of Mt Chincogan, it’s a wonderful place to shop for fresh produce, meet with friends, enjoy a market brekkie and local coffee, and soak up the fun and friendly vibe. There’s live local music each week, plus a dedicated kid’s space to keep the little ones entertained. The market also hosts regular workshops and special events throughout the year. The market is a not for profit organisation, which means every dollar you spend goes toward supporting local farmers, the community and a more sustainable future.
Café tucked away at the end of Stuart Street, Mullumbimby. The first sign that you are in for a treat at Punch and Daisy is the mouth-watering smells that greet you at the entrance. Freshly picked garden herbs, charred organic sourdough and the aromatic fragrance of brewed Moonshine coffee fill the air. Classic breakfast items like the poached eggs salsa verde and the bacon and egg croissant continue to bring smiles and contentment to our diners. Inspired by the culture and spirit of Mullumbimby and the Northern Rivers, we are continuously evolving in the way we cook, create, and connect with our community, customers and of course our farmers who are the ones who dictate the quality of the food. www.punchanddaisy.com @punch_and_daisy
PATISSERIE - SCRATCH PATISSERIE - A desire to bake traditionally using organic and local produce led Greg and Angie to start the patisserie in 2010. Over the years, the business has grown from it’s beginnings providing market shoppers with fresh pastries at the Byron and Mullumbimby Farmers Markets, and wholesale pastries around the Byron Shire, to include a shop in Mullumbimby selling their range of specialty cakes, tarts and pastries. www.scratchpatisserie.com.au @scratchpatisserie

Alstonville is a charming village set amongst fertile, green rolling hills known for their rich red volcanic soil perfect for growing avocados, macadamia nuts, tropical fruits and coffee. The historic buildings have all the charm of yesteryear housing a number of art and antique galleries, an historical museum and places to relax and enjoy the locally grown coffee. Originally known as Duck Creek Mountain, the village of Alstonville is central to many farms, orchards and nurseries and is famous for its Tibouchina Trees which line the streets and add a vibrant green and mauve colour throughout the village when flowering. Alstonville has a number of festivals and major events throughout the year including a rodeo and numerous trade fairs and expos at the large community centre. Located half way between Lismore and Ballina, Alstonville was established by the cedar cutters over a hundred years ago and you can still see a remnant of the ‘Big Scrub’ at Victoria Park where you follow a boardwalk through this sub-tropical rainforest.

VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE 6 River Street, Ballina NSW 2478 www.discoverballina.com.au There are numerous riverlets and many shore based fishing spots as the Richmond River widens and flows through the township of Ballina to the rock walls and out to sea. Ballina is located about a 30 minute drive south of Byron Bay. The Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is located here and regular jet services are provided to Sydney and Melbourne. The Ballina area was first home to the wider Bundjalung Nation and was a meeting place for the Bundjalung people. The Bundjalung people in the area were treated to a smorgasbord of seafood and bush tucker. The remnants of elaborate fish traps still exist on North Creek. These traps consisted of rock walls surrounding small pools, fish would become trapped as the tide began to ebb. The beaches of Ballina are magnificent surfing beaches. Lighthouse beach and Shelley Beach are easily accessed. Entry to South Ballina beach is accessed via the car ferry and offers outstanding surfing and beach fishing with 4WD access. Ballina’s etymology is not entirely certain. One view holds that it is a corruption of a clan name for the Bullina band of the Arakwal. It has been argued [citation needed] that in this tribe’s Bundjalung language, bullinah meant “place of many oysters”. This theory argues that the Aboriginal name reminded the predominantly Irish settlers of “Ballina”, so the name’s origin could be an accidental or deliberate corruption of the Aboriginal form. Another view is that town’s name comes from the Irish place name Ballina (Béal an Átha, “mouth of the ford”), which is found in several parts of Ireland.

BALLINA’S BIG PRAWN
Ballina is home to the world’s largest prawn (made of concrete and fibreglass). On 24 September 2009, Ballina Shire Council voted to allow the demolition of the Big Prawn, but this permission was never acted upon. Bunnings Warehouse purchased the site and refurbished the Prawn as part of the redevelopment. The Prawn now sits on a stand next to the entrance of the Bunnings warehouse car park. Ballina’s Big Prawn is another of Australia’s iconic big things. Built in 1989, the Big Prawn has undergone a makeover and was reopened in July 2013. It now has a tail! Visit another of Australia’s big things and while here grab your own fresh catch from one of the seafood stores on the opposite side of the road. 54

New Italy had its beginnings in 1880, when poor farming families from the Veneto region in Northern Italy were beguiled by Frenchman, Marquis de Rays, to purchase land in a phantom paradise in the Pacific named La Nouvelle France (an imaginary kingdom east of Papua New Guinea).
On their arrival they found there was no promised colony. After ‘Wow! What a wonderful place. Really impressed with the enduring disease and starvation in the festering tropics, the sur- curation of both museums. Keep up the great work.’ Jane D vivors were eventually brought to Sydney in April 1881. Over time the majority reunited at what is now called New Italy on some of the last land available for selection in northern New South Wales. As the community grew, establishing a fledgling silk industry, it embraced the diverse cultures of the region. We commemorate the stories of the expeditioners and those families who established the vibrant community of New Italy, carved out of the Australian bush.
