or simply letting small feet explore the beauty of nature. Reflections Holiday Parks are for everybody, including the four-legged members of the family. Twenty-four of our parks welcome pets, making it easy for the whole family to share the experience.

4: Accommodation options

1: Unforgettable experiences

Campers come in all shapes, sizes and levels of enthusiasm. Regardless of if you are a beginner or highly experienced, we have accommodation that suits.

When you reflect on your past, it’s not just the moment you remember, but the emotion: the joy, fun and excitement or the calm and serene. A perfect destination is one that lets you experience all this and more. Imagine relaxing ocean side, exploring stunning bushland, or kayaking across pristine waterways. Just thinking about it lets the stress drift away. There’s something to be said for the feeling of sand between your toes or cool grass under your feet. The quiet moments of a sunset and the mesmerising trance of a camp fire. You deserve to treat yourself and the family to an experience they’ll cherish for life.

Maybe you like the idea of being close to nature but still desire the creature comforts of air conditioning or a bit of glamping! That’s fine, a holiday should always be a holiday. Choose from luxury or basic cabins, or caravan and camping grounds with powered or unpowered sites.

5: We give back to communities What goes around comes around, and unlike other holiday destinations we actively invest back into our parks and the surrounding reserves.

2: Locations as magic as the experience Reflections Holiday Parks are uniquely located on some of the most iconic sites in Australia. From magic stretches of unspoilt coast, to the best kept inland secrets. This lavish, natural beauty is only possible on Crown Trust reserves. You’ll discover pristine landscapes as individual as you. The perfect place to fuel your wanderlust!

This helps to ensure that our natural and community spaces are preserved and maintained for generations to come and wonderful for visitors now. As you unwind, remember that funds raised from your stay go back into caring for and re-developing local parks and surrounds. Your break reinvigorates both you and the environment.

3: For family, friends & the furry ones You may like travelling solo or holidaying with family and friends. Our parks are the perfect place to share memories and reconnect with your tribe. From friends who love extreme-adventuring iii

LIGHTHOUSE Meander through rainforest, world class beaches to the lighthouse.

The Lighthouse… Meander through rainforest world class beaches to the lighthouse. The light that shines by night over Cape Byron Marine Park emanates from a tower as famous as the town of Byron Bay itself. Built at the turn of the 19th century to protect ships passing along the coast, Cape Byron Lighthouse stands resolute on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. Operated by resident keepers until 1989, its now automated light is clearly visible from the Byron Bay Township. Take a guided tour of the lighthouse, learn more about this iconic white tower and find out about shipwrecks and stories from the sea in the Maritime Museum which is below the lighthouse and the artwork inside is ‘a must see’.

You’ll enjoy some of the best views of the ocean and hinterland including regular sightings of turtles, dolphins. It is the most easterly point of Australia, and one of the best places to see humpback whales as they pass on their annual migration between May and October. Please note • The Maritime Museum is open 10am to 4pm daily • Remember to take your binoculars if you want to whale watch • It can be a busy place on the weekend, so parking might be limited • Parking fees apply

16

Walking Track Enjoy spectacular coastal views along the Cape Byron walking track that takes you on a hike through rainforest, beach, grassland and clifftops to the lighthouse.

State Conservation Area • It’s a good idea to put sunscreen on before you set out and remember to take a hat and plenty of drinking water • Keep on track, keep away from cliff edges • Take your swimwear as you may like to have a swim on the way You’ll need a good two hours to properly experience the walking track – but it’s so rich in delights, don’t be surprised if you reach the end and feel like doing it again.

Unwind and enjoy the view as you walk. The 3.7km loop leads you on a hike through rainforest and across clifftops with stunning views of the ocean and hinterland. En route you’ll wander through the shade of bangalow palms and ancient burrawangs, across kangaroo grasslands, along picturesque beaches and up to Cape Byron Lighthouse.

Accommodation The four Clarke’s Beach Cottages have direct access to Byron Bay’s main beach and are surrounded by National Park. Staying here is just magnificient, you can wake to ocean views and the sound of crashing surf. Alternatively the two lighthouse cottages where the former keepers used to live have been fully refurbished, heritage listed cottages (circa 1901) makes this a truly unique holiday experience. Be the first to see the sunrise on Australia’s mainland and enjoy watching dolphins, turtles and whales. To enquire about NPWS holiday accommodation in the lighthouse keeper’s cottages or the beach cottages go to www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/bookings

Learn to

SURF

Having a go at surfing is at the top of the must do list when visiting Byron Bay. Don’t just jump onto any surf school bus for your lessons, make sure your bus stops in town for surfing at the famous Clarkes or Belongil beaches that have made Byron Bay “the place” for the best lessons. Also although it’s tempting to go to your local surf shop and buy the latest pro model, the reality is that the modern short board is virtually impossible to learn on. It is hard to control, not very buoyant and hard to paddle. Surf with BlackDog Surfing to get the best

waves, on the right board in the bay on the day. BlackDog Surfing have more local knowledge & local experience than any other surf school in town. BEACHES Byron Bay has some of the most beautiful beaches in Australia

01 Belongil to The Wreck

02 Main Beach to Clarkes

This beach starts at the western side of the Main Beach car park and heads west away from the Lighthouse. Another great wave in Byron Bay that was formed when ‘The Wollongbar’ was washed from the old Byron Bay jetty during the 1920s. ‘The Wollongbar’ was then used as the major transport for all the tourists coming from Sydney to visit The Bay. You can still see the ‘rudder’ and ‘the boilers’ sticking out of the sand. Here both Lefts and Rights break on sandbanks that are always there because of The Wreck. From here, all the way along Belongil Beach gets its good share of waves. It is great for both the experienced surfer and the beginner. The waves vary from fast hollow dumping waves, to soft spilling waves, dependant on what the swell and sandbanks are doing. It will pick up most swells from the north to the south and likes a west to south west wind but also a south east is surfable. The sweep is here if the swell is here.

This beach runs from the end of The Pass back down to the carpark at the Byron Bay Surf Life Saving Club. This is Byron Bay’s main patrolled beach. The waves here are often fast and hollow but can often get small spilling waves depending on how big the swell is. There are both Lefts and Rights here, as long as the sandbanks are in good shape. There are often rocks along here that come and go with the sand flow. It likes the wind to be from the south east to south west, and will pick up most swells. The sweep often comes with the swell, so you have to look for an exit point before you get to the rocky car park, otherwise you will get back to the beach in front of The Wreck, past the rocks.

03 The Pass

05 Tallow Beach

The most famous wave in the Bay, where you have all extremes in one wave, from the point, which is hollow and fast breaking all the way past the rocks, and you must be experienced. Once past the rocks, it will break towards Clarks Beach, where the waves are more spilling and more suited for beginners.

Tallow Beach is the long open beach on the southern side of the lighthouse. It is an open beach that will pick up all swells. It should only be surfed by experienced surfers, unless it is very, very small. The waves are fast and hollow, but can sometimes be spilling waves. It likes all winds from the North East, North West to South West. The waves will break, no matter how small the surf is … Lefts and Rights. The south swell should be avoided, as this will push you onto and around the rocks. There are always rips and currents along this beach.

04 Watego’s Beach Watego’s Beach is the most easterly beach in the Bay. It is very popular with Long boarders and is a great family beach. The waves are mostly spilling and will break all the way to The Pass. All swells will get there, except a strong south swell. There is often a sweep (side-shore current) along this beach that will carry you towards the rocks and 'The Pass'. You must always watch for an exit point to avoid being carried past the end of the sand, otherwise you must keep surfing to 'The Pass'. 23

WHALES

As Byron Bay is the most easterly point of Australia, it is here that whales pass by extremely close to the mainland on their journey to the warm, shallow waters of Queensland to give birth to their young and some species are accompanied by the males to mate. Humpback whales are the stars of the annual whale migration and are one of the most common whales you will see. The male humpback whale is famous for its extraordinarily long and complex songs which travel very far throughout the oceans. Get up close to some of the most awe-inspiring marine life on earth and go kayaking with dolphins and turtles on a guided sea kayak tour. Prepare to be amazed, as the whales may pass gracefully nearby. It is important to stay 100 metres from the side of their path and 300 metres if a calf is present. However it is amazing how curious they are and like to come closer to investigate. What an amazing feeling it is to make eye contact with such a wonderful creature.

Ways to spot a whale

25

Seeing a whale “Blow” is sometimes the first sign of a whale you will see, when looking out to sea. Whales spray water up to 4 metres into the air! They often travel in groups at an average speed of 10k an hour. So if it is May to July, look a little north of the ‘Blow’ to see a whale Surface or “Breech”. Look south of the Blow from August to Sept. While breeching is done by Humpback whales, Southern Right Whales also follow the migration track.

One of the unique joys of the Northern Rivers is the consistent access to a diverse range of local markets. Each one has its own distinctive charm and Weekly farmer’s markets are the highlight of the week for fresh locally grown produce. Buy freshly picked produce that is full of nutrients gleaned from our rich volcanic soils and get back in step with what nature intended. Procure products ranging in variety from tasty fruit and veg to home cured meats, free range organic eggs, baked goods and nutrient packed raw foods. Indigenous arts and crafts and other beau-

tiful things made by local people using unusual natural materials are joined by unusual jewellery stalls, funky one of a kind clothes and colourful imports from Africa and Asia. You can pamper yourself with a massage to soothe away your aches and pains and choose from a wonderful range of natural skin and hair care products and when you need a break you can try some freshly squeezed sugar cane juice or perhaps a steaming cup of chai. The kids can have their faces painted and delight in the original toys, games and fun fairy outfits. A perfect day out and a perfect place to find that original gift to take back home.

bush tucker. The remnants of elaborate fish traps still exist on North Creek. These traps consisted of rock walls surrounding small pools, fish would become trapped as the tide began to ebb.

Ballina is located about a 30 minute drive south of Byron Bay. The Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is located here and regular jet services are provided to Sydney and Melbourne.

Because of its geographical position it was only natural that Ballina was one of the first places settled by white man. The Ballina Naval & Maritime Museum provides a detailed insight into the history of the area. All major transport was carried out by ship, with the Richmond River providing a natural transport link to settlements further inland and a means of transporting red cedar downstream to be shipped around the globe. When the supply of

The Ballina area was first home to the wider Bundjalung Nation and was a meeting place for the Bundjalung people. The Bundjalung people in the area were treated to a smorgasbord of seafood and

timber began to dwindle dairy farming became the next big industry in the area. Today Ballina is a modern regional town offering all types of accommodation, shopping and eateries, with a river that is a natural magnet for visitors and locals. At Fawcett Park, in the town centre, you can enjoy al fresco dining with river vistas while the kids play nearby. The beaches of Ballina are magnificent surfing beaches. Lighthouse Beach and Shelley Beach are easily accessed. Entry to South Ballina Beach is accessed via the car ferry and offers outstanding surfing and beach fishing with 4WD access.

Located in central Ballina, only a short walk to the RSL Club and other great shopping and dining experiences. Sit back and relax taking in the stunning views over the Richmond River, enjoy a stroll along the boardwalk observing the amazing nature that inhabits the area. 4 Kerr Street Ballina, 2478 NSW 02 6681 5677

Blessed with a beautiful beach and river, families keep returning to experience the simple pleasures of Brunswick Heads.

w ic k H e a d s B r u nAsPlace to Relax

Simple Pleasures abound in this small coastal village situated at the mouth of the Brunswick River. Unspoiled by development, timber bridges link the colourful village to a safe, gentle river beach and the spectacular surf beach that spans the coastline all the way to Byron Bay – just 10km south. Come and enjoy the village atmosphere with no large scale resorts or high rise apartments instead hosting a wide range of family friendly accommodation including over 60 boutique holiday rentals, three caravan parks along the river and a number of motels. You don’t have to leave your furry friend at home either with pet friendly places to stay, eat and walk. This is foodie heaven! You’re spoiled for choice with 25 eateries, from hip cafes to award-winning restaurants, all serving inspired food and the freshest local produce. Enjoy a sun downer and live music at one of Australia’s best beer gardens at the iconic Hotel Brunswick. After 30 years the curtain is lifted on the Brunswick Picture House with family friendly movies and a monthly ‘cheeky cabaret’ for parents and grandparents to enjoy. Amongst the natural beauty of the beaches and river there is a unique shopping experience to be had with an eclectic range of boutiques, second hand fare, contemporary Aboriginal art and craft and one of the shire’s famous river front markets every first Saturday of the month. 48

For those wishing to be pampered there are hairdressers, a Beauty Spa and a range of fitness and wellbeing activities to choose from. A truly ‘all round’ holiday experience reminiscent of the simple family holidays we used to enjoy with a bit extra thrown in. The Brunswick Heads Fairy Trail is a delight for children and adults alike. Fairies love to holiday in Bruns too. Follow the clues, available from the Visitor Centre, to find more than 20 unique fairy houses hidden around town. Another favourite with the kids is Torakina Beach. Shady nooks make swimming in the gentle and protected waters of Torakina, inside the river mouth feel like a tropical heaven as you enjoy the vibrant colours of the river as it changes throughout the day. Discover the delights of the majestic Brunswick River and its abundant bird-life on an award-winning eco-cruise. Or join a group kayak or stand up paddleboard tour for a unique experience of the Brunswick River. Located only 15 minutes north of Byron Bay and thirty minutes from the Gold Coast and Ballina Airports, Brunswick Heads simply has something for everyone!

GREAT FOR KIDS The kids can enjoy themselves in the river or at Torakina Beach, safe family haven only metres from the surf beach.

World Heritage rainforests, dramatic mountain ranges, fertile green fields, uncrowded beaches... Coming from Byron ….

Spend time wandering through the Tweed Valley and the numerous waterholes that connect to the stunning Tweed River.

Heading north from Byron Bay, take the Tweed Valley Way towards Murwillumbah. Approximately 10 minutes off the highway you’ll find the delightful town of Burringbar. Turn left down the main street and head to the quaint Fallen Leaf cafe, a delightful place for a relaxing coffee, tea and locally-made treats. Home to lush farm and grazing land, Burringbar will soon host the region’s first cheese cellar door, Tweed Valley Whey, tipped to open early 2018.

The great outdoors is the way of life in the Tweed and with the Tweed River connecting the villages an abundance of nature based activities are on offer for visitors and locals alike. Take a river cruise, hire a house-boat or simply picnic by the river by one of our many parks and playgrounds. The Tweed’s passion for artistic ventures can be felt through its vibrant creative community. Celebrating cultural festivals, village gatherings and the spectacular Tweed Regional Gallery. A sense of place is found in the numerous valley & coastal towns-where you will find boutique, vintage and unique treasures.

From Burringbar, head to Murwillumbah where you’ll arrive on the southern-end of town at the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre. Perched high on the hill with stunning views west towards Wollumbin (Mt Warning), spend some time exploring the exquisite works.

A sustainable lifestyle is fed by the rich volcanic soils, crystal clear abundant water and temperate climatic conditions that provide a perfect environment for growing fresh produce and Australian native foods.

Heading out of Murwillumbah, continue past the Gallery and meander through farmland towards the village of Uki. Take in views of Wollumbin along the way as you enjoy lunch at one of the eclectic café’s, the historic hotel or, if you happen to be there on the third Sunday of each month, stop in at the localmarket at the Buttery Bazaar.

The many and varied restaurants, markets and food events are brimming with local produce and flavours that reflect the abundant food production of the region.

From Uki, you can make your way back towards Murwillumbah, stopping first at the base of Wollumbin. A visit to this world-heritage national park is a must-do and see attraction.

Coming from the Gold Coast … You can take the freeway, but we recommend you head inland from Currumbin (QLD) and make your way over Tomewin Mountain Road. A scenic route that leads you into Chillingham where you can visit the award-winning Buck’s Farm. Wander through the extensive range of Australian native trees, citrus and exotic Asian food plants or browse through a range of locally-made products in the farm shop.

A strong sense of place with great cultural significance to the local Bundjalung people, we recommend doing the Lyrebird walking trail at the base of the mountain. This 0.6km return walk takes you across Breakfast Creek to a lookout set in the subtropical rainforest. After your walk, take a drive back towards Murwillumbah, stopping to wander the streets inspired by the Art Deco history.

From Chillingham, head further west to the historic village of Tyalgum where you can stop in for a taste of local produce at the gorgeous Flutterbies café.

Heading north out of Murwillumbah for about 10 minutes you will reach Tumbulgum. This delightful historical town adorns the Tweed River and offers a choice of fantastic dining options from cafés to the historic Tumbulgum Hotel-featuring an outdoor beer garden, children’s playground and restaurant.

Driving 25minutes east from Tyalgum, you will arrive to Murwillumbah, a thriving town set alongside the majestic Tweed River. Home to the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Centre as well as the many modern café’s, children’s playgrounds and riverside hotels and clubs.

Watch the sun set over the Tweed River, then make your way to the main freeway for an easy drive back down the highway, past the cane fields, taking in the last crowning views of Wollumbin as you return to your destination.

Leaving Murwillumbah and heading further east, you’ll make your way to Salt Village and Kingscliff. Home to gourmet eateries, ice cream and coffee shops, take a stroll along the sandy beaches or relax in one of the beachside hotels as you watch the end-of-day waves.

For further inspiration & ideas to create an itinerary to stay & play longer in The Tweed, visit one of our friendly staff at the visitor information centres located in Kingscliff, Murwillumbah or Tweed - call 1800 674 414 or www.destinationtweed.com.au

Showcasing the cultural and natural history of the Tweed Shire

2 Queensland Road Murwillumbah 2484 | (02) 6670 2493 | museum.tweed.nsw.gov.au

Tweed Regional Museum The Tweed Regional Museum is one museum that operates across three branch locations; Murwillumbah, Tweed Heads and Uki, and in association with these three local Historical Societies. The three locations connect the Tweed Shire from the coast to the mountains, providing a unique journey into the history, people and places of the majestic Tweed Valley.

Murwillumbah Branch The Murwillumbah branch is located in the original Tweed Shire Council Chambers of 1915, with a spacious contemporary extension. Permanent displays provide a glimpse into past settlement and development; changing displays showcase the Tweed Regional Museum collection and contemporary stories about places, events and people significant to the Tweed community. TRM Murwillumbah offers a program of public events and workshops, guided tours and a dedicated children’s area.

Tweed Heads Branch During 2017 the Tweed Heads branch underwent major refurbishment. The original Tweed Heads Court House, constructed in 1926 and moved to the current site in 1985, is now the centerpiece. The story of this heritage building and of law and order in the Tweed, together with highlights from the Museum’s extensive photographic collection, are featured. Uki Branch The smallest branch of the Museum is in the picturesque village of Uki, nestled at the base of Wollumbin – Mt Warning. This branch is a local heritage resource centre showcasing the stories of life over the years in the remote upper reaches of the Valley.

Admission to all Tweed Regional Museum branches is FREE All images supplied by Tweed Regional Museum Photographer Justin Ealand
