BYRON BAY From world-renowned beaches to lush hinterland surrounds, Byron offers something for just about everyone with an eclectic and laid-back mix of alternative, surfie and trendy culture. Originally known as Cavanbah or ‘meeting place’ by the original Bundjalung people of the area, Byron continues to live up to its traditional heritage with people flocking from everywhere to shop, surf, scuba dive and of course, walk the famous Cape Byron Lighthouse track. Located at Australia’s most easterly point, this walk offers a stunning vista of migrating whales as well as resident dolphins and leopard sharks. Known to many as the Rainbow region, Byron is home to a thriving local community of musicians and artists and hosts a variety of colourful markets and festivals. The beaches are also popular for romance, with the Byron Bay Surf Club being a favourite wedding venue.

Byron Bay

A Coastal town in the north eastern Australian state of New South Wales. It’s a popular holiday destination, known for its beaches, surfing and scuba diving sites. Cape Byron State Conservation Park is on a headland with the bightest lighthouse in Australia. Between June and November, humpback whales can be spotted from headland viewpoints such as the Captain Cook Lookout.

Wake up, grab a coffee on the go, do the lighthouse walk and jump in the ocean all before you start your day exploring world class Byron Bay. ‘Comma is here to remind you of the sublime in stillness. That amidst the clamour of modern life, time is your greatest currency. As the name implies, Comma stands for taking a moment to breathe, regenerate, find calm, and begin again. We believe in the healing power of touch, in conscious minimalism, warm neutrals, pacifying low light, and baptism by oiled up limbs. But there’s more to Comma than a moment of day-spa-induced sopor. Comma represents a lifestyle that’s enriched and balanced inside and outside our walls. A place where you’ll have the sort of holistic massage experience that will make you wonder how you ever went on without it. A place that is yours as much as it is ours..’www.commabyron.com @ commabyron

a travellers’ destination, and by 1973, when the

Aquarius Festival was held in nearby Nimbin, its reputation as a hippy, happy, alternative town was

established, although tourism facilities remained minimal. From the 1980s, tourism began to develop in earnest, with the cash-poor surf-

in a prevalence of alternative “new-age” shops, “spiritual” services such as meditation and yoga

classes, and holistic healing/’wellness’ retreats. As at 2018, the town is cited as having around 9,000

permanent residents, while being visited by over 2.2 million visitors each year. +Source - WIKIPEDIA

STATE CONSERVATION AREA • It’s a good idea to put sunscreen on before you set out and remember to take a hat and plenty of drinking water • Keep on track, keep away from cliff edges • Take your swimwear as you may like to have a swim on the way You’ll need a good two hours to properly experience the walking track – but it’s so rich in delights, don’t be surprised if you reach the end and feel like doing it again. Unwind and enjoy the view as you walk. The 3.7km loop leads you on 16

IMAGE VIA @CATFOODTACO a hike through rainforest and across clifftops with stunning views of the ocean and hinterland. En route you’ll wander through the shade of bangalow palms and ancient burrawangs, across kangaroo grasslands, along picturesque beaches and up to Cape Byron Lighthouse.

Scuba Diving

Julian Rocks has over 1000 recorded species of tropical, temperate and pelagic fish, fantastic snorkelling or diving visibility all year round. One of the most prolific fish dives in the world. Situated within the Cape Byron Marine Park and just 2.8 kilometres from shore, Julian Rocks was named one of Australia’s top snorkel destinations by Australian Geographic and rated as one of the best dive sites in Australia. The marine life is amazingly diverse and abundant. In the winter months, it is an aggregation site for the endangered Grey Nurse Shark. In the summer, Leopard Sharks and Manta Rays frequent

the waters near Julian Rocks. Due to the wide diversity of marine life, professional photographers often flock here and along with diving courses learn underwater photography from the best. As well as being a well renowned dive site snorkelling tours are available every day. Snorkellers are taken to the most protected areas where depths are shallow and you will see as much marine life as the divers. A memorable introduction to the mysterious underwater world of the region! The boat trip itself is fun where you can regularly see dolphins and whales when in season. Dive and snorkel trips depart daily. Check our web site for details byronandbeyond.com

The marine life at Julian Rocks is amazingly diverse due to tropical warm currents mixing with cooler temperate water

Learn To Surf Having a go at surfing is at the top of the must do list when visiting Byron Bay. Don’t just jump onto any surf school bus for your lessons, make sure your bus stops in town for surfing at the famous Clarkes or Belongil beaches that have made Byron Bay “the place” for the best lessons. Also although it’s tempting to go to your local surf shop and buy the latest pro model, the reality is that the modern short board is virtually impossible to learn on. It is hard to control, not very buoyant and hard to paddle. Surf with BlackDog Surfing to get the best waves, on the right board in the bay on the day. BlackDog Surfing have more local knowledge & local experience than any other surf school in town. The owners are on the beach each day & the team of instructors are the best in the bay. They know where to go to find the safest waves on the day & will not take you surfing when the surf is too big and dangerous for you.

THEY WILL ORGANISE YOUR LESSON/S AND HAVE YOU CATCHING WAVES IN NO TIME

All the instructors are totally qualified and experienced local surfers that help you in the surf 100% of the lesson and are committed to being safe and having heaps of fun. Everything you need is provided. All you need to do is bring a positive attitude, enthusiasm and a smile! The one thing that all participants have in common is how much they love the sensation of riding their wave!

BEACHES Byron Bay has some of the most beautiful beaches in Australia

01 Belongil to The Wreck

02 Main Beach to Clarkes

This beach starts at the western side of the Main Beach car park and heads west away from the Lighthouse. Another great wave in Byron Bay that was formed when ‘The Wollongbar’ was washed from the old Byron Bay jetty during the 1920s. ‘The Wollongbar’ was then used as the major transport for all the tourists coming from Sydney to visit The Bay. You can still see the ‘rudder’ and ‘the boilers’ sticking out of the sand. Here both Lefts and Rights break on sandbanks that are always there because of The Wreck. From here, all the way along Belongil Beach gets its good share of waves. It is great for both the experienced surfer and the beginner. The waves vary from fast hollow dumping waves, to soft spilling waves, dependant on what the swell and sandbanks are doing. It will pick up most swells from the north to the south and likes a west to south west wind but also a south east is surfable. The sweep is here if the swell is here.

This beach runs from the end of The Pass back down to the carpark at the Byron Bay Surf Life Saving Club. This is Byron Bay’s main patrolled beach. The waves here are often fast and hollow but can often get small spilling waves depending on how big the swell is. There are both Lefts and Rights here, as long as the sandbanks are in good shape. There are often rocks along here that come and go with the sand flow. It likes the wind to be from the south east to south west, and will pick up most swells. The sweep often comes with the swell, so you have to look for an exit point before you get to the rocky car park, otherwise you will get back to the beach in front of The Wreck, past the rocks.

03 The Pass

05 Tallow Beach

The most famous wave in the Bay, where you have all extremes in one wave, from the point, which is hollow and fast breaking all the way past the rocks, and you must be experienced. Once past the rocks, it will break towards Clarks Beach, where the waves are more spilling and more suited for beginners.

Tallow Beach is the long open beach on the southern side of the lighthouse. It is an open beach that will pick up all swells. It should only be surfed by experienced surfers, unless it is very, very small. The waves are fast and hollow, but can sometimes be spilling waves. It likes all winds from the North East, North West to South West. The waves will break, no matter how small the surf is ‌ Lefts and Rights. The south swell should be avoided, as this will push you onto and around the rocks. There are always rips and currents along this beach.

04 Watego’s Beach Wategos Beach is the most easterly beach in the Bay. It is very popular with long boarders and is a great family beach. The waves are mostly spilling and will break all the way to The Pass. All swells will get there, except a strong south swell. There is often a sweep (side-shore current) along this beach that will carry you towards the rocks and 'The Pass'. You must always watch for an exit point to avoid being carried past the end of the sand, otherwise you must keep surfing to 'The Pass'. 21

Watch the Whales As Byron Bay is the most easterly point of Australia, it is here that whales pass by extremely close to the mainland on their journey to the warm, shallow waters of Queensland to give birth to their young and some species are accompanied by the males to mate. Humpback whales are the stars of the annual whale migration and are one of the most common whales you will see. The male humpback whale is famous for its extraordinarily long and complex songs which travel very far throughout the oceans. Get up close to some of the most awe-inspiring marine life on earth and go kayaking with dolphins and turtles on a guided sea kayak tour. Prepare to be amazed, as the whales may pass gracefully nearby. It is important to stay 100 metres from the side of their path and 300 metres if a calf is present. However it is amazing how curious they are and like to come closer to investigate. What an amazing feeling it is to make eye contact with such a wonderful creature.

WAYS TO SPOT A WHALE Seeing a whale ‘blow’ is sometimes the first sign of a whale you will see, when looking out to sea. Whales spray water up to 4 metres into the air! They often travel in groups at an average speed of 10k an hour. So if it is May to July, look a little north of the ‘blow’ to see a whale ‘surface’ or ‘breach’. Look south of the ‘blow’ from August to Sept. While breeching is done by Humpback whales, Southern Right Whales also follow the migration track.

THE BIGGEST LITTLE TOWN IN AUSTRALIA IS SURE TO BE INSPIRATIONAL AS SOON AS YOU DRIVE IN TO THE VIEW OF MT CHINCOGAN. Mullumbimby is an Australian town in Byron Shire in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. It promotes itself as “The Biggest Little Town in Australia”. The town lies at the foot of Mount Chincogan in the Brunswick Valley about 9 kilometres (5.5 miles) by road from the coast. At the 2016 census, Mullumbimby and the surrounding area had a population of 3,596 people. Locals refer to the town as “Mullum”. The name “Mullumbimby”, meaning “small round hill”, was given to the district by Aboriginal people. The name is derived from the Bundjalung-Yugambeh dialect mulubinba (possibly also pertaining to a native fern which grew in the vicinity). Mullumbimby is a centre of alternative or counter culture in the Byron Shire. A day out in Mullum is definitely part of the Byron experience.

A DAY IN MULLUM EAT DAY - PUNCH & DAISY -You will find Punch and Daisy Café

tucked away at the end of Stuart Street, Mullumbimby. The first sign that you are in for a treat at Punch and Daisy is the mouth-watering smells that greet you at the entrance. Freshly picked garden herbs, charred organic sourdough and the aromatic fragrance of brewed Moonshine coffee fill the air. Classic breakfast items like the poached eggs salsa verde and the bacon and egg croissant continue to bring smiles and contentment to our diners. Inspired by the culture and spirit of Mullumbimby and the Northern Rivers, we are continuously evolving in the way we cook, create, and connect with our community, customers and of course our farmers who are the ones who dictate the quality of the food. www.punchanddaisy.com @punch_and_daisy

PATISSERIE - SCRATCH PATISSERIE

- A desire to bake traditionally using organic and local produce led Greg and Angie to start the patisserie in 2010. Over the years, the business has grown from it’s beginnings providing market shoppers with fresh pastries at the Byron and Mullumbimby Farmers Markets, and wholesale pastries around the Byron Shire, to include a shop in Mullumbimby selling their range of specialty cakes, tarts and pastries. www.scratchpatisserie.com.au @scratchpatisserie

This is a once a year event, and is an

opportunity to both get a little fitness in as well as see the views from the top of Mt Chincogan. Food supplied on the day by Mullumbimby Public School at affordable prices. Whilst the event is underway, directly in front of the Mullumbimby Ex-Services club will be family friendly fun and entertainment, including food and drinks. Dust off your running shoes and get ready for a great day out. This event is generally held in September.

SHOP - MULLUMBIMBY HERBALS - The essence of Mullumbimby.

Mullumbimby Herbals stocks an extensive range of high grade organic herbal and naturopathic medicines. To ensure the optimum strength of their herbal preparations they source the fresh herbs from dedicated local organic growers and manufacture most of their own tinctures using traditional and time tested techniques as well as incorporating the latest and most effective extraction techniques.

EXPLORE- MULLUMBIMBY FARMERS MARKET- every Friday morning

7am-11am, is where you’ll see Mullum at its colourful best. Since its opening in 2010, the market has become the gathering spot for Mullumbimby’s vibrant community, re-inventing the age old tradition of a community market meeting place. Set under magnificent fig trees in the lush foothills of Mt Chincogan, it’s a wonderful place to shop for fresh produce, meet with friends, enjoy a market brekkie and local coffee, and soak up the fun and friendly vibe. There’s live local music each week, plus a dedicated kid’s space to keep the little ones entertained. The market also hosts regular workshops and special events throughout the year. The market is a not for profit organisation, which means every dollar you spend goes toward supporting local farmers, the community and a more sustainable future.

@craigparryphotography There are numerous riverlets and many shore based fishing spots as the Richmond River widens and flows through the township of Ballina to the rock walls and out to sea. Ballina is located about a 30 minute drive south of Byron Bay. The Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is located here and regular jet services are provided to Sydney and Melbourne. The Ballina area was first home to the wider Bundjalung Nation and was a meeting place for the Bundjalung people. The Bundjalung people in the area were treated to a smorgasbord of seafood and bush tucker. The remnants of elaborate fish traps still exist on North Creek. These traps consisted of rock walls surrounding small pools, fish would become trapped as the tide began to ebb. The beaches of Ballina are magnificent surfing beaches. Lighthouse beach and Shelley Beach are easily accessed. Entry to South Ballina beach is accessed via the car ferry and offers outstanding surfing and beach fishing with 4WD access. Ballina’s etymology is not entirely certain. One view holds that it is a corruption of a clan name for the Bullina band of the Arakwal. It has been argued [citation needed] that in this tribe’s Bundjalung language, bullinah meant “place of many oysters”. This theory argues that the Aboriginal name reminded the predominantly Irish settlers of “Ballina”, so the name’s origin could be an accidental or deliberate corruption of the Aboriginal form. Another view is that town’s name comes from the Irish place name Ballina (Béal an Átha, “mouth of the ford”), which is found in several parts of Ireland.

The up-to-date aquatic facility now includes: FINA compliant 50m heated pool with eight 2.5m wide lanes for competition swimming and water polo 25m x 15m heated enclosable pool, can be used for swimming lessons, children’s play, lap swimming and rehabilitation. EAT EVENING - CHÉ BON - ‘Gastronomie Francaise’.

When Pascale and Rodolphe’s paths crossed, it was success at first sight. Together they created ‘Happy Friend Family Restaurant’ in the old town of Lyon which is classified world heritage by UNESCO. Seeking new challenges, they decided to move to Australia. After one year travelling around the country they settled in Tintenbar in 2006 to create Ché Bon. The aim of this cultural exchange experience is to share French traditional way of life and have you spend an unforgettable time at Ché Bon.

BALLINA’S BIG PRAWN

Ballina is home to the world’s largest prawn (made of concrete and fibreglass). On 24 September 2009, Ballina Shire Council voted to allow the demolition of the Big Prawn, but this permission was never acted upon. Bunnings Warehouse purchased the site and refurbished the Prawn as part of the redevelopment. The Prawn now sits on a stand next to the entrance of the Bunnings warehouse car park. Ballina’s Big Prawn is another of Australia’s iconic big things. Built in 1989, the Big Prawn has undergone a makeover and was reopened in July 2013. It now has a tail! Visit another of Australia’s big things and while here grab your own fresh catch from one of the seafood stores on the opposite side of the road.

New Italy

WELCOME TO HISTORIC NEW ITALY!

Our Museums and facilities stand on acreage that was once part of the original New Italy settlement, on the Pacific Highway in Northern NSW, between Byron Bay and Grafton. Historic New Italy is a great place to rest, enjoy an excellent coffee at our Café and an Italian experience in the Australian bush land. Dedicated volunteers wanting to preserve the memory of the pioneering Italian families built the mud-brick Museum/Café, Italian Pavilion, Gift Shop, Community Hall and Glass Art Workshop buildings during the 1980s and 1990s. This quiet stopover off the highway has ample free parking and space for caravans, picnic areas and room to walk your leashed dog. Often kangaroos can be seen lying about watching the site’s visitors.

HISTORY

New Italy had its beginnings in 1880, when poor farming families from the Veneto region in Northern Italy were beguiled by Frenchman, Marquis de Rays, to purchase land in a phantom paradise in the Pacific named La Nouvelle France (an imaginary kingdom east of Papua New Guinea). On their arrival they found there was no promised colony. After enduring disease and starvation in the festering tropics, the survivors were eventually brought to Sydney in April 1881. Over time the majority reunited at what is now called New Italy on some of the last land available for selection in northern New South Wales. As the community grew, establishing a fledgling silk industry, it embraced the diverse cultures of the region. We commemorate the stories of the expeditioners and those families who established the vibrant community of New Italy, carved out of the Australian bush.

LOTS TO SEE AND DO

The New Italy Museum tells the pioneering story of the New Italy settlement while the Italian Pavilion showcases the broader history of Italian migration to Australia and our Northern Rivers region. The volunteer-run Casa Vecchia Gift Shop, situated in a replica of Antoniolli’s old mud brick house and wine shop, has a stunning array of Italian and Italy-inspired gift items as well as artwork by local artisans. Revenue raised from here goes towards the site’s heritage development and its ongoing maintenance.

60

At the New Italy Glass Art Gallery, glass blower Ian O’Driscoll crafts intricate figures and colourful jewellery. Carnevale Italiano. If visiting in early April, join us for Anniversary Day. On or around 7 April, descendants of the pioneering families gather for a day of celebration and plant a tree in the Park of Peace to give thanks … with much good food, wine, music and dance for all to enjoy! Visit newitaly.org.au for to find out more. 8275 Pacific Highway New Italy (10 minutes south of Woodburn) NSW 2472 PO Box 5139, East Lismore NSW 2480 info@newitaly.com.au • www.newitay.org.au OPENING HOURS: 7 days/week 9am ~ 4pm. Entry is free or by donation. ‘Wow! What a wonderful place. Really impressed with the curation of both museums. Keep up the great work.’ Jane D

DID YOU KNOW? Mount Warning is the central volcanic remnant of an ancient shield volcano, the Tweed Volcano, which would have been about 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level or just under twice the height of the current mountain. This volcano erupted around 23 million years ago. As the mountain’s central vent cooled, it shrank, forming a depression at the top that has greatly eroded.
