Reproductive performance is a complex trait that includes things like conception rate, age at puberty, days to first estrus and displaying heats. Daughter pregnancy rate (DPR) is a good general indicator covering the whole range of traits for lactating cows. HCR and CCR provide more detailed information about a sire’s particular strengths and weaknesses in regard to reproduction. Semen purchases are a key factor in the profitability of your herd. This is a fact that’s underappreciated by many. Bargain semen purchases may not be as wise as they appear. There is a performance difference in the semen products on the market and it’s important to understand the value the products deliver. Did you know that sires that transmit 20 pounds more Combined Fat and Protein (CFP) deliver $20 more return per straw of semen? Did you know that, in sires of equal genetic merit, a sire with a +2.0 Sire Conception Rate (SCR) will deliver $10 more return per straw of semen than a bull at -2.0 SCR? NEW LOGO DESIGNATES A2 CERTIFIED SIRES Select Sires is proud to introduce new information about the A2 status of our sires with the August sire summaries. Select Sires has conducted additional DNA testing to certify which bulls are true A2 beta casein transmitters. The extra testing, supervised by the a2 Milk Company, provides more detailed results of which beta casein variants a sire transmits and also verifies those that are true A2 transmitters. Bulls with the A2A2 genotype that have passed this verification testing are identified with this special label throughout this sire directory.
The FeedPRO index optimizes the selection for increased production. • J.P. Gibson compared digestible energy intake between high- and low-milk producing genetic lines for Friesians and Jerseys and proved that high-milk genetics were more efficient than low milk genetic lines in both breeds.1 FeedPRO maximizes profitability by moderating body size and promoting a balance of milk, fat and protein that can allow your herd to produce more milk from less feed. FeedPRO optimizes the selection for increased production and moderate body size while maintaining body condition score and daughter fertility. ®
• R.F. Veerkamp’s research pointed out similar findings. His data showed that if two cows are of equal body weight, the cow with 25 percent greater milk production will have a 10 to 15 percent higher feed efficiency value. Any time body weight drops, maintenance requirements also shrink, and feed efficiency should improve. A 25 percent loss in body weight at the same level of milk production boosts feed efficiency by 10 to 12 percent.2 The FeedPRO index also identifies bulls whose daughters maintain body condition, improving the herd’s ability to maintain a positive energy balance. • Maintaining body condition has a strong correlation with dairy form. Retaining this body condition under high production has a positive relationship with less days open, improving Productive Life (PL) and reducing other metabolic disorders as shown by research from the University of Guelph.3

Prominent Dairy Scientists Endorse FeedPRO: “Feed efficiency is a critical issue to dairy farm profitability, and we are currently researching methods of selecting for more efficient cows,” says Chad Dechow, Ph.D., dairy genetics research scientist. “Though we have much to learn, I find Select’s application of this science to be sound and useful for today’s dairy producers. In my review of FeedPRO, I found that daughters of FeedPRO sires have an advantage, on average, of 13 to 18 cents per day in income over feed cost when compared to the active A.I. average. US JERSEY BOARD APPROVED REGISTRATION GUIDELINE CHANGES Recently, the AJCA board of directors made changes to how cattle in the Genetic Recovery Program and the Jersey Expansion Program will be handled. Genetic Recovery Program – Effective March 14, 2015 The program will now require: 1. The Original Animal (OA) to have a Herd Register (HR) status parent (sire or dam) OR be genotyped. 2. Record males only at the Genetic Recovery (GR) level, provided the bull and both parents are genotyped. Jersey Expansion Program – Retroactive to January 1, 1999 The program will change the labels associated with the names of cattle having inheritance outside of the Jersey breed. 1. Females can be recorded at all levels (J1 through J6). 2. Males can be recorded at J4, J5 and J6 levels, and only when the bull and both parents are genotyped. 24
3. Offspring status advances one level when sired by an HR-status sire or when a parent is three or more generations higher than another. 4. For all other combinations, offspring status will be no higher than that of the lowest status parent. 5. For cattle descending from OA Oomsdale Gordo Goldie Gratitude, the number found inside the brackets will represent the generations of HR qualifying parentage. This boardapproved action will be applied to the above-named cow and all descendants for six generations. HAPLOTYPES IMPACTING FERTILITY With our growing knowledge about the bovine genome, experts have predicted for some time that we’d likely discover numerous cattle genetic defects. Human genetic researchers estimate that we each carry four or five genetic defects. It’s reasonable to expect that these exist at a similar level in cattle. USDA researchers along with international collaborators have identified haplotypes that appear to cause embryo loss or stillbirths when these haplotypes exist in the homozygous state. These genetic conditions have not been directly observed and we do not know the exact genetic or biological cause of why the embryos or fetuses are not viable. Because of this, they’ve been given simple names of Jersey Haplotype 1 (JH1), Jersey Haploytype 2 (JH2), Brown Swiss Haplotype 1 (BH1), Brown Swiss Haplotype 2 (BH2) and Ayrshire Haplotype 1 (AH1). These haplotypes appear to have a recessive mode of inheritance where animals with zero or one copy of the haplotype are completely normal. Those that inherit two copies of the haplotype are lost as embryos or are stillborn. The impacts of these haplotypes vary and are dependent on their frequency in the population and at what stage of gestation the pregnancies are lost. JHI has a frequency of 23.4 percent. JH2 frequency is 2.6 percent. BHI exists at a frequency of 14 percent and BH2 exists at a frequency of 20.5 percent. Only one haplotype has been discovered in the Ayrshire breed (AH1) and it exists at the highest frequency of 26.1 percent. It’s im-
portant to realize that the negative impact of these haplotypes is already accounted for in the routinely published sire conception rate (SCR) evaluations and daughter pregnancy rate (DPR) genomic evaluations. So, if you are using these traits in selecting your A.I. sires, you’re already avoiding or compensating for these new genetic conditions. The haplotypes each represent a distinct and unique genetic condition. They are not related to each other. The haplotypes have no impact when a bull that is heterozygous for BH1 is mated to a cow that is heterozygous for BH2. The risk is only experienced when animals are heterozygous for the same haplotype. Select Mating Service (SMS) is an excellent tool for managing these genetic conditions. By using the SMS program, herds with at least one generation of pedigree information on their cows can use heterozygous bulls with less than 1 percent chance of lost pregnancies from known conditions. Handling Frozen Semen Straws
Proper semen handling is essential to maintain optimum reproductive performance of your A.I. breeding program. To maintain the high quality of semen you purchased from your Select Sires representative, you must pay strict attention to the many details of semen handling outlined on this poster. If you have questions about the correct handling procedures for Select Sires semen, please call you Select Sires Reproductive Solutions Specialist. STRAW RETRIEVAL AND THAWING • Avoid raising straws above the frost line. (1) • On new canes, bend the identification tab up to a 45º angle. (2) • Use the forceps to remove one straw at a time from the top. If it takes more than 10 seconds to retrieve the straw, lower the canister back into the tank and allow to re-cool for 20 to 30 seconds. (3) • Shake the straw gently to remove excess liquid nitrogen and promptly place in 95º F (35º C) water to thaw for at least 45 seconds. Thaw only as many straws as you can use in 10 to 15 minutes. When multiple straws are thawed, do not allow direct contact during thawing process. (4) • To retrieve straws from the bottom goblet, grasp the cane and raise it until the straws are even with other cane tops. Hold the cane and canister with one hand. With your forceps in the other hand, remove the desired straw and place it in the thaw water. (5) LOADING THE INSEMINATION GUN • Before loading the insemination gun, pre-warm the barrel by stroking it vigorously with your hand five or six times. • Make sure the plunger is back about six inches to allow for insertion of the straw. • Remove the straw from the thaw water and wipe it completely dry with a paper towel. • Check to see that the straw contains semen from the desired bull and that a small bubble is at the crimped end. • If the bubble is not at the crimped end, gently tap the straw until the bubble moves to its correct position. • Place the cotton plug end of the straw in the gun. It will stop at exactly the right depth. • Wipe the scissors with a paper towel and cut the straw at a right angle ¼" below the lab seal. (6) • Slide the plastic sheath over the straw and gun and firmly attach the sheath and gun together. (7 and 8) • Inspect the straw end of the gun to ensure a proper seal between sheath and straw.
