Para Site is delighted to collaborate with Hong Kong artist IV Chan to present newly-commissioned works in 'Poop Me to the Moon' at 2023 Art Basel Hong Kong. The collaboration is an extension of Chan's participation in Para Site's public programme 'PS Paid Studio Visits' initiated in May 2020, a free-to-attend online programme series of virtual studio visits to support local artists' livelihoods during COVID-19 shutdowns. To celebrate the finale of the virtual PS Paid Studio Visits series as life slowly resumes pre-pandemic pace, Para Site invites IV Chan to materialise her insights incubated from her participation in ‘PS Paid Studio Visits’ in the Para Site booth at Art Basel Hong Kong 2023. Fairgoers may also revisit the previous sessions at the booth and read through selected publications from previous institutional programmes.
Through her practice of creating soft anthropomorphic sculptures, installations, poetry, and performances, Chan reflects on her problematic bodily experiences, while addressing themes revolving around body politics, psychoanalysis, base materialism, and mythology. Probing the idea of a 'problematic body', her research explores alternate perspectives and anticipations of one's mortal flesh. In this presentation, the artist employs Julia Kristeva's psychoanalytic concept of 'abjection' to revisit her childhood memories, exploring the boundaries between enjoyment and anxiety through a child’s worldview.
In the Para Site booth, Chan sets up a wooden structure that resembles the bunk bed she had shared with her sister in their childhood bedroom. With soft sculptures and carpet designs resembling human excrement oozing out of the structure and spilling over the floor, this intimate yet uncanny space materialises a child’s longing for a mother’s attention and grief for her absence. The artist also includes four wall pieces consisting of embroidered underpants framed in children’s magnetic drawing boards. Turning objects of shame into trophies, these small sculptures represent the child's desire to regain the mother's approval and once again become her object of desire.
IV Chan’s practice explores the complexities of the human body and soul through sculptures, installations, and performances. She sees our corporeal existence as tragic and ludicrous; sordid and pure. While inspecting her own problematic bodily experiences, she is fascinated by the interrelationship between original sin and its catharsis with a focus on the mother and child complex. Her tactile and somewhat playful sculptures touch upon the breadth of bodily experience and the metaphysical. She employs a range of techniques to piece together these interwoven narratives and concepts where textile is manipulated, sewn, punctured, and stuffed while coming into contact with an array of other media from beading to wax.
Chan has received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, a Post Graduate Diploma in Visual Art from Goldsmiths University of London, and an MFA from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Chan was selected to be an artist in residence at Tai Kwun in 2021 which resulted in a performance of her work What did mother not tell me at the JC Cube. She also took part in the Para Site Paid Studio Visits in 2020, a programme initiated in response to the pandemic. Apart from exhibiting, Chan has extended her artistic interests to art direction and costume design for films and theatre productions. Chan is currently a part-time lecturer at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
她曾於2021年為大館駐留藝術家,並於賽馬會藝方演出 作品《What did mother not tell me》。 Para Site Paid
Studio Visits
