How can the arts participate in developing practices and cultures of sustainable worlding?

The global ecological crisis is amplifying the interconnectedness of all living things, as the planet’s ecosystem strains under the weight of historical capitalism and geopolitical conflict. But discussions and interventions across geographies and disciplines responding to this era of polycrisis are often perceived as remote, as governments and corporations seemingly prioritise profit over sustainability and everyday struggles. Small Acts / New Flows reflects on that problem by considering small steps as actions that embody the common saying: the only way out is through.

Taking a fluid and networked approach to the act of learning, Small Acts / New Flows unfolds across three interconnected parts: The Alternative School, a four-week syllabus of workshops designed and led by invited artists and collectives focusing on ecology; Workshops for Emerging Arts Professionals, a one-week programme of close-door exchanges exploring the politics and ethics of institutional labour and sustainability in the arts; and Public Gathering, a forum convened by participants in both programmes.

The Alternative School: Small Acts (7 September–6 October 2024) foregrounds communities exploring issues of ecology through art and urban design via public engagement activities intended to activate a multi-sensory experience of knowledge transfer. Workshops, guided tours, and field trips anchored to the themes of ‘Learning from The Ground Up’, ‘Interspecies Coexistence’, and ‘Grounding in Daily Practices’ will be led by artists, art practitioners and designers including Hong Kong Soil by TMML, Urban Diary, Chris Michael Owen, Fredie Chan Ho-lun, Hong Kong Bird Watching Society, Theadora Leung, Wong Pikkei, Catherine Clover,Yip Kai-chun, Wayla Amatathammachad, Dr. Tommy Hui, Brian Wong and Wanwu Practice Group. Taking place in Para Site’s tenth-floor annex Learning Space and Hong Kong’s outlying islands, participants will learn to take small steps to connect to the living environment and with other species, resituate themselves within the ecosystem, and consider how to translate their experiences into everyday habits.

Workshops for Emerging Arts Professionals: New Flows (23–30 September 2024) is a laboratory for emerging arts professionals to reflect on the arts ecosystem and their role and agency within it. Adopting a circular model of exchange, leading figures in the field will host exchanges and workshops in Para Site’s Learning Space alongside off-site visits, interrogating the ethics of art work, diasporic solidarity, collaborative models, institutional forms, and sustainable futures. Facilitators include Adeline Ooi, who has directed initiatives to position Hong Kong, and Asia more broadly, into a crucial art world meeting point; Mai Abu ElDahab, director of Mophradat, a non-profit association supporting artists from the Arab world, generating inventive approaches to funding, commissioning, collaborating, and gathering; Guangzhou-based artist collective BOLOHO, now participating in CHAT’s Seed to Textile programme; Cem A, the artist behind @freeze_magazine; and Sakiya, a progressive academy connecting art, science, and agriculture in Palestine and beyond. Throughout, participants will consider the idea of professionalism after professionalisation and explore ways of practising together.

Small Acts / New Flows - A Public Gathering (29 September 2024) functions as both a culmination and point of departure. This afternoon forum invites Alternative School and Workshops for Emerging Arts Professionals participants and facilitators to share ideas and learnings that have emerged throughout both programmes with the public, connecting ideas of collective institution building and community engagement with ecological practice. Details to be announced.

Para Site Alternative School / Workshops for Emerging Arts Professionals 2024: Small Acts / New Flows is generously supported by the S.H. Ho Foundation Limited. The programme is curated by Alice Wong and Stephanie Bailey in collaboration with Billy Tang, Celia Ho, Jessie Kwok, and Stefan Luk of Para Site.

Storytelling can be used as a tool to understand interspecies coexistence in cities, and to inspire action in response to observations and reflections in our living environment.

In this workshop, Urban Diary will guide participants in exploring urban ecology through non-fiction storytelling. The team will first introduce the theoretical foundations of this methodology, then share methods, techniques and ethics for documenting community stories. This will be followed by a practical outdoor walking exercise, where participants are encouraged to use their senses to observe and associate, so as to craft unique narratives about nature in our community.

This workshop will focus on sonic ecologies and their relevance for city making practices. Specifically, the workshop will focus on passage migrants, migratory birds that are flying through Hong Kong between Russia and Australia on the north-south East Asian Australasian Flyway.

In September, when this workshop takes place, the birds will be flying over Hong Kong and south to Australia. Migration is dangerous for the birds for many reasons including the glass skyscrapers of large cities. The birds have great difficulty navigating the light and reflections of the glass and frequently crash into the buildings. In the mornings there can be carnage on the pavements below. With an orientation to languaging and landscape, and sound in relation to architecture and urban space, this workshop will comprise sitespecific interspecies listening and voicing to explore and build connections between birds, people and place.

We sometimes forget that humans are animals. By inviting participants to learn to move like an animal, to approach the relationship between body and space, and to create their own dance through methods of Butoh (also known as Dance of Darkness), this workshop introduces ways of expressing emotions beyond the confines of human languages.

The workshop is open to all levels of experience. Movement artist Wong Pik-kei will introduce the basic philosophy and physical exercises in Butoh. Developed on skills based on master Tatsumi Hijikata ( 土方 )’s Butohfu ( 舞踏譜 , fu means "notation" or “manual” in Japanese), Pik-kei will lead participants to explore the transmutation of the human body into other forms. Participants will explore the expression of sorrow and joy and create a spatial sculpture collectively through improvisation.

Age: 6 or above

‘Bird-window collisions’ refer to what happens when birds fail to recognise a glass curtain wall or mirror as an obstacle and mistakenly think they can fly into it, thus hitting the building and causing injury or even death. According to Global Bird Collision Mapper, over 400 cases of bird collision were recorded in Hong Kong. Bird-window collisions are just around the corner.

In September, when autumn migratory birds start to arrive in Hong Kong, arts practitioner Theodora Leung, together with Hong Kong Bird Watching Society (HKBWS), will guide participants to learn about the local issue of bird-window collisions. An outdoor tour will identify potential bird collision hotspots, explore how different actions in daily life can bring about changes, and consider what we can do to co-exist with birds in urban space.

Oceans and rivers are presented on maps as a monotonous, almost uniform, blue colour. In fact, different waters have their own unique ecosystems and face different crises due to urban development and other anthropogenic factors.

‘Not Just a Patch of Blue’ is a field trip exploring rivers, marine ecology and art-making as social interventions. Wayla Amatathammachad, founder and director of the Prayoon For Art Foundation from Thailand, will share his longstanding interest in the Mekong River's ecological collaboration with art interventions, as well as Low Fat Art Fes, a public engagement art project that he initiated. which also focuses on the river's ecology.

In the afternoon, Yip Kai-chun, one of the founders of the ‘Inter-island Festival’, will lead the participants on a boat ride to share the curatorial concept of the ‘Inter-island Festival’, which will be moored at Peng Chau, Cheung Sha and Pui O. Dr. Tommy Hui of the Science Unit of Lingnan University and Brian Wong, researcher of Liber Research Community, will point out the impact that coastal development around Lantau Island has had on coastal and intertidal ecologies.
