Joo Choon-Lin: Come Out and Play at 8Q! Exhibition:
2 June – 7 August, 2009
Venue:
Hanart TZ Gallery, 202 Henley Building, 5 Queen's Road Central, Hong Kong
Artist:
Joo Choon-Lin
Curator:
Dominique Chiu
Title of work: Come Out And Play at 8Q! Medium: Stop-motion animation Duration: 06:02 mins Year: 2009
With highly self-reflexive use of various media, Joo Choon-Lin blows life into her colorful characters and renders an absurd fantasy of a battle between Ringmaster and chocolate monsters. The artist let the materials and environment carry the storyline to where it unrolls. The brilliant interplay between media—meticulously drawn images and their smudged ghosts on flat surfaces, deftly made 3D sculptural figures and nebulous shapes in water, shows Joo’s sensitivity towards the characteristics of each medium.
Joo Choon-Lin (Born in Singapore, 1984) is a graduate (Diploma in Fine Art) of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore. Her visual language comprises the sensitive use of colour, virtuosic mark-making and broad experimentation with wide-ranging media. Joo's versatility is evident in her experimental animation which she creates by using traditional image-making techniques of drawing and photography. Her storyboards consist of sequences of drawing, erasing and re-drawing, and animating them using stop-motion photography techniques. Her works have been showcased in group exhibitions in Hong Kong and Singapore. She also had a solo exhibition Come Out And Play At 8Q! in 8Q Singapore Art Museum. She is currently living in Singapore. http://www.ringmastertoymaker.wordpress.com
