PARCOURS DES MONDES

12 - 17 SEPTEMBER PARIS, SAINT-GERMAIN DES-PRÉS

P ARCOURS DES MONDES 2017 Parcours des Mondes, the premier international tribal and Asian art fair, will be more remarkable than ever this year. Now in its sixteenth year, the show, which takes place in the streets of the Saint-Germaindes-Prés neighborhood of Paris, will feature outstanding programming and events. In addition to the many exhibitions that participating dealers will present, this year’s honorary president of Parcours, Javier Peres, is both a contemporary art gallerist with an international reputation and an important African art collector. Espace Tribal, a place for tribal art related interactions, will stage an exhibition that expresses his distinctive perspective and unusual approach to melding contemporary and African art. Parcours des Mondes will also place special emphasis on French Polynesia this year in conjunction with the launch of an important new reference book on tapa cloth.

P ROGRESSIVE PROGRAMMING This year, as they do every year, participating dealers will present a wide variety of high-quality and original thematic exhibitions. Charles-Wesley Hourdé will investigate the affinities that Pablo Picasso had with tribal art in his Picasso masqué show, which will examine the artist’s discovery of African art, his first acquisitions, his collection, and the influence these objects had upon his work. Lucas Ratton will focus on the Bamana culture of Mali, the ritual sculptures of which are powerful and penetrating. Abla and Alain Lecomte will present an exhibition titled Bateke: The Sophie and Claude Lehuard Collection on the art of the Lower Congo. Polynesia will be the focus at Michael Evans’ gallery, where he will show an important collection of weapons from the South Seas in an exhibition titled War Clubs of the South Pacific. Oceanic art enthusiasts will also have the opportunity to see rare tapa cloths from the Solomon Islands and the Lake Sentani area of New Guinea exhibited by Anthony J.P. Meyer. Exhibitions dealing with specific subjects rather than specific areas also will illustrate the diversity of nonEuropean art. Yann Ferrandin will present Prestige et Pouvoir (Prestige and Power), a selection of ceremonial objects both symbolic and utilitarian that function as social markers attesting to man’s cultural traditions, artistic abilities, and desire for power. ExtraExtraordinaire a selection of exceptional and original artworks from around the world, will be on view at Alain Bovis’ gallery. Kapil Jariwala will explore the realm of esoteric beliefs with his Mapping Belief exhibition. Finally, an important selection of paintings from the Australian APY Lands, including a majestic three-meterlong work that was the winner of the 2016 Telstra Prize at the Darwin National Museum, will be displayed by Aboriginal Signature. The full list of the thematic exhibitions presented this year is available on page 6.

T WO MAJOR EVENTS Conceived of two years ago as a place for viewing and developing an appreciation of the arts of Africa, Oceania, Asia, and the Americas, Espace Tribal this year will have an exhibition relating to Parcours’ honorary president, Javier Peres. Peres, an internationally recognized contemporary art dealer based in Berlin and an avid collector of African art, will create a vibrant installation at Espace Tribal. His conception is personal and ambitious, asserting aesthetic bridges between non-European art and the works of contemporary artists. Important contemporary paintings and sculptures from Peres’ own collection will be installed alongside Nigerian artworks selected from dealers participating in Parcours des Mondes. This intersection of periods, genres, and cultures will create a stimulating dialog relating to the mixing and marrying of different art forms. The subject will further be explored in-depth within the framework of Café Tribal, a series of morning events featuring a variety of specialists moderated by Elena Martínez-Jacquet, editor-in- chief of Tribal Art magazine.

PARCOURS DES MONDES

12 - 17 SEPTEMBER PARIS, SAINT-GERMAIN DES-PRÉS

Parcours des Mondes will also put a special emphasis on French Polynesia, as it associates itself with the publication of an important new reference work on tapa cloth entitled « Tapa, De l’Ecorce à l’Etoffe, Art Millénaire d’Océanie » (Tapa – From Bark to Fabric, the Millennia Old Art of Oceania), edited by Editions Somogy. The book was made possible thanks to the contributions of many international specialists and contemporary artists. Throughout the fair, a number of events associated with the publication of the work will be programmed at the Espace du Crous on Rue de l’Abbaye, including an exhibition of large contemporary tapas (from Tonga, Fiji, and the Marquesas Islands among other places), the projection of a variety of films on tapa all over Oceania featuring the presentation of a new program every day, and a series of lectures on tapa by the authors of the book.

W INDS OF INNOVATION While collectors and art aficionados attend Parcours des Mondes in increasingly great numbers, the fair is exploring new territory and promote fertile new dialogs. Non-European art is a living entity and its objects are an integral part of the daily life of the many cultures from which it comes. It adapts to different contexts, whether it be gallery and museum displays or collectors’ homes. The complexity of tribal art allows it to thrive in different environments and function through multiple facets. While it has great symbolic, cultural, and intrinsic dimensions, it also a seamless and stimulating part of everyday life in Western collections, while still presenting connections with other times and places. To bolster this spirit of exchange and sharing, in the 2017 show Parcours des Mondes will increase its presence on social media. A new Instagram account (@Parcoursdesmondes) will provide Internet users information about how the fair unfolds and will offer sneak previews of some of the important works that will be presented. Parcours des Mondes continues to expand its scope. Two years ago, the fair officially began to include Asian art, and this year it is knocking at the door contemporary art. This year’s show will emphasize the connections between non-European art and other artistic genres to demonstrate to what extent Asian and tribal art are accessible to all people, not just to a cognoscenti elite. The fruits of rich and age-old cultures, these arts engender primal aesthetic responses. Acquired knowledge of how they were created and used only enhance our appreciation of these remarkable art forms. Far from being esoteric, the visual power of tribal art is remarkable and immediate. Parcours des Mondes underlines these qualities and makes them available to the public at large.

J AVIER P ERES, HONORARY PRESIDENT OF THE 2017 P ARCOURS DES M ONDES

Javier Peres was born in Cuba in 1972, and was an attorney prior to opening his contemporary art gallery, Peres Projects, in San Francisco in 2002. The gallery is now established in Berlin. His keen eye and his audacious choices quickly made him the talk of the international art scene.

Javier Peres born in Havana, Cuba, 1972 © photo Adrian Parvulescu

Javier Peres has collaborated with major artists, many of whose careers he helped launch. His gallery shows at the most world’s prestigious fairs: Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach and Art Basel Hong Kong, Frieze New York, Frieze London, FIAC, Independent Brussels and New York, and his exhibitions there have achieved widespread recognition for their exceptional quality.

Peres is passionately interested in African art, and has, over the last twenty years, built up a phenomenal collection which he continues to nourish regularly, traveling the world over in search of works that move him, and attending tribal art events in order to stay in touch with the market. For him, African art has intrinsic and internal powers that enhance its attraction to him, and have a very strong influence on him. While his love for tribal art remained private for a long time, the collector has, for several years now, been more open about it, and has become involved in creating dialogues between it and contemporary art. He has organized several exhibitions in his gallery, such as « Group Spirit » and « Wild Style » which marry these artistic periods. Tribal art is a source of inspiration to him, and influences his choice of contemporary artists as well as the aesthetic criteria he uses to determine what contemporary art interests him most. In his Berlin apartment, he likes to mix his tribal art works with those of major contemporary artists, such as large-format paintings and designer furniture, and make it possible for his visitors to experience his unique perception and eye. Peres is an inveterate globetrotter and shares his passion for both tribal and contemporary art with the rest of the world through social media. Hyper-connected and hyperactive, the young collector seeks to break down the barriers between artistic domains and promotes a personal, open and inclusive vision to a broad audience by means of images and articles which he posts daily on social media. Tribal art is an important part of his digital and computer-related activities, and he has a decidedly modern approach to how he combines it with contemporary art. Find Javier Peres on Facebook, Instagram et Twitter @peresprojects.

T HEMATIC EXHIBITIONS This list is not comprehensive and is subject to change

« Gems from the remote Australian APY lands desert » By Aboriginal Signature • Estrangin Fine Art, Brussels, exhibiting at 41, rue de Seine This exhibition is dedicated to the artists of the APY lands, a first for Paris, and presents the most beautiful creations from this desert’s five art centers, which are regularly recognized with international prizes. The majestic three meter high work which won the 2016 Telstra prize in the painting category at the National Museum of Darwin will be displayed on the occasion. All of the works shown were selected in situ in this isolated 102,000 square kilometer territory, which is home to 2500 Aborigines who celebrate their sacred stories of the Dreamtime.

« Arts de Haute Volta » By Dandrieu-Giovagnoni, Rome, exhibiting at 15, rue des Beaux-Arts The arts of the Volta River regions are still relatively little known as old sculptures are very rare. This exhibition, made up of about fifteen masks, statues and utilitarian objects from Mossi, Lobi, Bobo, Gurunsi, Bwa and Nuna cultures promises many discoveries to interested collectors. This art seduces with its variety, its often geometric and abstract forms, and the richness of its colors, with brown, red and white predominating. A feast for the eyes and for the spirit!

« ExtraExtraordinaire » By Galerie Alain Bovis, Paris, exhibiting at 9, rue des Beaux-Arts Extraordinary is what isn’t usual, an exceptional and original object, a rarity. Extraordinary is what by virtue of its qualities ranks above the others, a remarkable, fabulous and marvelous object. With this exhibition, Alain Bovis invites us to travel across the continents through objects which are… extraordinary.

« Des falaises de Bandiagara aux plaines de Bamako » By Galerie Laurent Dodier, Avranches, exhibiting at 35-37, rue de Seine « This year, the exhibition I have been preparing for over two years will be on Africa, and more specifically Mali. As these were weapons skillfully crafted from exotic hardwoods, made for ceremony, dance and warfare »

« New Beginnings - New Gallery / Same Address » By Galerie Flak, 8, rue des Beaux-Arts The Flak gallery will present its latest thematic exhibition entitled ”New Beginnings” in an entirely renovated and enlarged gallery. PARCOURS DES MONDES

12 - 17 SEPTEMBER PARIS, SAINT-GERMAIN DES-PRÉS

« Pouvoir et prestige » By Yann Ferrandin, Paris, exhibiting at 33, rue de Seine On the occasion of the 2017 Parcours des Mondes, Yann Ferrandin is presenting an exhibition titled Prestige and Power, devoted to symbolic and visual ceremonial objects which function as social markers that attest as much to man’s desire for power as they do to the traditional cultures and the skills of the artists that made them. Since time immemorial, tribal societies have associated a wealth of very diverse artistic creations with their practices of governance, their social codes and their spiritual universes. A conception of man and his relationships with his peers is revealed by these objects, which may take many forms (staffs, adzes, rattles, stools, and headrests for instance) and are reserved for use by chiefs, shamans and recognized initiates. They illustrate a world of marvels, of metaphors and of ideas, and tell of myths and rituals at the same time as they are an integral part of everyday life. They are associated with both the profane and the sacred, and their aesthetic and moral values are inseparable. This exhibition will offer a larger public as well as those with more prior knowledge an opportunity to discover and learn more about these moving works through the presentation of objects of astonishing beauty (most hitherto unpublished) from a variety of stylistic traditions and geographic areas, selected according to the highest aesthetic standards. The exhibition will be accompanied by the publication of a catalog which will be available at the gallery.

« L’Emprise des masques » By Charles-Wesley Hourdé, Paris, exhibiting at 40, rue Mazarine «L’Emprise des Masques» presents an ensemble of African and Oceanian artworks carefully selected for their aesthetic quality, their age, but also their affinity with Picasso’s work and life. Despite his famous «l’art nègre, don’t know!», there is no doubt that Pablo Picasso got inspired by non-European art when elaborating his artistic identity. In all of his work, Picasso transfigured the human body and shape, like a demiurge. As if wanted to make them wear masks and then depict them through his personal prism. Masks are central to to the artist’s life. Peter Stepan, who studied Picasso’s relation with them, noted that it is often difficult to know whether the artist’s masked characters have a mask-shaped face or wear a mask. Several series of photographies show the painter’s love for dressing up. Thus, it is no surprise that Pablo Picasso primitive art collection mainly comprised masks. Beyond non-European artworks, the mask - from Antique mythology or Spanish archaeology - has been a mental and artistic process by which Picasso frequently transformed his surroundings. Hence, «L’Emprise des Masques» invites you to explore the Spanish master’s passion for masks through a selection of African and Oceanian artworks which aesthetic is closely related to the artist’s. Is should be noted that some Pablo Picasso’s drawings will be put in dialog with the tribal pieces.

« Lignes claires - Matières obscures » By Galerie Olivier Larroque, Nîmes, exhibiting at 2, rue de l’Echaudé While African art is essentially figurative, it does sometimes tend towards a form of abstraction. This may happen through subtractions, which push stylization towards a complete purity of line, or on the other hand through saturation, which drowns the sculpture under an accumulation of materials or various objects that finally obscure it. This exhibition is dedicated to exploring a confrontation between these two contrasting aesthetic approaches and moreover reveals interesting parallels with major modern and contemporary Western art forms.

« Entre grâce et brutalité. La Côte d’Ivoire dans les collections italiennes » By Dalton Somaré, Milan, exhibiting at 22, rue de Seine

PARCOURS DES MONDES

« Mapping belief: mapping the world » By Kapil Jariwala, London, exhibiting at 25, rue de Seine Central to our exhibition this year for Parcours des Mondes is the use of cartographic and diagrammatic representation to express the relationship of Man to both his terrestrial world and the greater cosmos. This amalgamation of different pictorial languages is both visually exciting and intellectually intriguing. Broadly speaking the scope of the exhibition can be divided into two main areas – theoretic cosmic maps and functional maps products of religious and secular communities in India from the 18th and 19th centuries especially from Hindu and Jain religious sects but also from Rajput courts. A map is a diagrammatic set of codified symbols and instructions that informs the map user to his whereabouts and to help him navigate a course to his desired destination, maps are made by people who have travelled the terrain represented – showing landmarks, physical features, buildings, trees, mountains, hills, streams and rivers. Above all maps are functional they are tools that will guide the user. So how do you map and represent the cosmos? Given that these cartographers haven’t travelled across ions of time a space or can be certain of their calculations to chart the heavens. Essentially they are maps of belief that are informed by a complex belief system. that has prescribed by religious authorities who have woven cosmic theories with metaphysical beliefs. In the exhibition we will be showing : Jambudvipas – cosmic maps that show the universe according to the Jain concept of creation. Two monumental scale pilgrimage maps of Satrunjaya the holy temple complex in Palitana, Gujarat. Rajput paintings where cartography is interwoven with a narrative representation.

« Batéké. La collection Sophie et Claude Lehuard » By Galerie Abla et Alain Lecomte, Paris, exhibiting at 4, rue des Beaux-Arts Abla and Alain Lecomte’s thematic exhibitions are always inspired by that part of Africa they have the greatest affinity for, the Lower Congo. What is fresh each time is their desire to present things in a new light, while always retaining a same “backdrop” of art, magic, and medicine…

« Bambara » By Lucas Ratton, Paris, 33, rue de Seine For the September 2017 Parcours des Mondes, Lucas Ratton is showing an ensemble of Bambara works. This Malian ethnic group has produced a great diversity of objects, and its exceptionally rich sculptural traditions resonate with a correspondingly wide variety of rituals. After his last exhibition on animals, Lucas Ratton had the opportunity to assemble this group of Bambara sculptures, and it represents the fruit of several years of research. Parcours des Mondes, as the most important event of its kind in the tribal art world, will be the perfect venue for sharing our passion for these Bambara masks, marionettes and other ritual sculptures that never cease to amaze with their modern forms, and arouse unique feelings and reactions in those who view them. A catalog will be published for the show.

« Ivorian Combs » By didier Claes, Brussels, exhibiting at 12, rue des Beaux-Arts For his new participation to the Parcours des Mondes, didier Claes will occupy at the gallery La Forest Divonne to exhibit a selection of 18 combs from Republic of Côte d’Ivoire. These wooden pieces are delicately carved figurative part, sometimes covered with brass, and allude to several forms of Ivorian culture: the art of hairstyle and ornament. The combs constitute a “mixed” encounter between the masculine world of the sculptor and his potential sponsor and the feminine world of the person who used this utensil most often and sometimes received it as a gift. With the renewed interest in the recognition of Ivorian master-sculptors and their workshops, this exhibition of combs shows first and foremost the diversity of forms and styles, and the immense talent of the artists who created them.

« Tropéa & Yoruba. Résonnances de perles, d’hier et d’aujourd’hui » By Galerie Schoffel de Fabry, Paris, 14, rue Guénégaud During Parcours des Mondes 2017, Galerie Schoffel de Fabry will confront the beaded artworks of contemporary artist Yveline Tropéa, with those of the ancient Yoruba people from Nigeria. Yveline Tropéa has been navigating between Ouagadougou and Paris for more than ten years, having installed a studio in both cities. Her work is deeply rooted in Africa, but also in a inner universe that leads her to automatic drawing, free from any borrowing. This exhibition goes back to the origins, by bringing to life the connexions that exist between the beads of contemporary embroidered artworks and those of ancient crafted pieces from the Yoruba kingdom. Through a vast range of both past and present masterpieces (paitings, drawings, divination bags, headdresses, regalia), the gallery will show how the mythological message of the Yoruba creations and the free spirit resulting from the subliminal dreams of Tropéa are united by the same desire of permanence.

« L’Emotion des formes : Plastique et dynamique africaine » By Galerie Éric Hertault, Paris, 3, rue Visconti Subsaharian art is based on the abstraction of geometric shapes, hence inducing an indefinite rhythm, an aesthetic emotion devoid of any logic. An indissociable beauty emerges from the juxtaposition of bizarre shapes where disproportion, deformation, and sometimes exagération of the sculpted volumes match a subtle harmony, stimulating emotion and imagination. This thematic display of carefully chosen masks and small effigies will be guided by the notions of emotional attraction, aesthetic coherence and subjectivity of the taste.

« African and Oceanic Art from historic collections » By galerie Patrik Fröhlich, Zürich, exhibiting at 3, rue Visconti This exhibition is formed by a careful selection of 16 artworks from Africa, Oceania and the Northwest Coast of America. Coming from the collections of renowned, historic and prestigious collectors and dealers – among them Arthur Speyer form Berlin, Jef Vander-Straete from Belgium, André Breton/ Paul Éluard and Tristan Tzara from Paris and Max Kofler from Switzerland – these works of art have been choosen by some of the bestknown individuals committed to the art of African and Oceania. Each of them succeeded in building a very personal collection, whereat the pursuit of the highest quality was the shared element. The exhibition will be accompanied by an eponymous catalogue.

« A Collection of Early Celts, Hand Axes, and Projectile Points » By Thomas Murray • Asiatica - Ethnographica, exhibiting at JSC Gallery _ 3, rue des Beaux-Arts Thomas Murray will be offering his personal, highly selected collection of ancient stone and bronze celts, axes, projectile points, scrapers and other tools from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Age from around the world. Formed over a 35-year period, this grouping includes examples from the Sahara to Papua New Guinea, Alaska to New Zealand, with ancient Indonesia and Mainland Southeast Asia also strongly represented. Many of these stone artifacts were made for ritual purposes, hence their great beauty. Some of the stone objects go back to more than150 thousand years, but most would be located on a timeline from 10, 000 BC to 200 AD. Transitions have been of particular interest to the collector: for example, from Stone Age to Bronze Age and therefore early metal tools of classical form are also included in this collection. There are 185 pieces in the collection, which is being offered as a whole.

« Portraits in the garden of sculptures » By Joaquin Pecci Tribal Art, Brussels, exhibiting at 32, rue de Seine The Joaquin Pecci gallery is happy to present you its latest exhibition in its new space at 32 rue de Seine. A new space, a new dynamic, fostered by an intimate scenography where you will comme face-to-face with varied sculptures and masks from Central and West Africa and the Himalayas. One part of the exhibition will literally feature «heads»: Lobi, Ekoi, Not, Akan, Kastine or Bamoun, so as to magnify the art of portraiture that these sculptors have mastered. These heads are carved in wood, sometimes covered with hide, or modeled in terracotta. Each head is the seat of the vital force and the soul of the ancestor or the deceased; it sometimes turns into the protector of the family, a political agent or the focus point of a ritual. Portraits in Africa, whether conceptual or naturalistic, depict real people that were part of a family and contributed to the life of their community.

« Paris - Cotonou - Paris : Kifouli Dossou & Coco Fronsac » By Galerie Vallois, Paris, 35, rue de Seine This exhibition will feature about fifty Gelede contemporary masks by Kifouli Dossou, and ancient photographies retouched by French artist Coco Fronsac, inspired by the same masks. This exhibition is part of the Vallois gallery’s annual program for 2017: « Paris - Cotonou - Paris ». This series exhibits each month works of artists originating from Benin, or having special links with this country located in West Africa.

« Paris - Cotonou - Paris : Edwige Aplogan & Charly d’Almeida » By Galerie Vallois, Paris, 41, rue de Seine The Vallois gallery will present during Parcours des Mondes the 6th exhibition of her program « Paris - Cotonou - Paris », which highlights contemporary artistes from Benin troughout the year 2017. For this occasion, the gallery located on the 41 rue de Seine will display the works of two artists renowned in the disciplines of painting, sculpture and installation: Edwige Aplogan and Charly d’Almeida.

« X masques de Côte d’Ivoire » By Galeria Guilhem Montagut, Barcelona, exhibiting at 6, rue Jacques Callot These are the objects that first caught the eyes of the first aficionados and artists, then fascinated them, and then finally completely changed their ways of seeing and thinking. They were amazed to discover that in the darkest parts of the darkest forests, anonymous sculptors had anticipated their most contradictory preoccupations – cubist, surrealist, and expressionist – and thus moved them to speak of Art.

« Luba Hemba Cariatides » Bernard de Grunne

nard de Grunne Tribal fine Arts

By Bernard de Grunne - Tribal Fine Arts, exhibiting at Galerie Patrice Trigano _ 4bis, rue des Beaux-Arts We invite you to discover a focused exhibition based on a specific style of the Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo: the standing caryatid Hemba stools. An essay on these powerful symbols of the Luba and Hemba Kingdoms will be published in a catalogue, to be released in exclusivity for the preview day on Tuesday 12 September. This publication tells us about the historical evolution of these royal stools, from the most ancient prototype styles to the kneeling and standing caryatid and atlantes styles. These thrones are considered as prestigious objects, they were mostly used for rituals, representing the strength and the power.

PRESS RELEASE PRACTICAL INFORMATION

T H E L E A D I N G ASIAN ART FAIR

I N T E R N A T I O N A L TRIBAL ART FAIR

PARCOURS DES MONDES

12 - 17 SEPTEMBER PARIS, SAINT-GERMAIN DES-PRÉS

W HERE The Beaux-Arts neighborhood of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris, 6th arrondissement. Participating galleries are located on the following streets: rue des Beaux Arts, rue Bonaparte, rue de Seine, rue Visconti, rue Jacques Callot, rue Mazarine and rue Guénégaud.

W HEN Tuesday September 12 through Sunday September 17. Opening: September 12, 3 pm - 9 pm Wednesday through Saturday, 11 am - 7 pm Thursday until 9 pm ; Sunday, 11 am - 6 pm

W HAT Thanks to the number, quality, and variety of its participants, Parcours des Mondes is presently the world’s leading international tribal art e fair. Every year since 2002, it has brought together an ever-increasing number of galleries with specialties in the arts of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. With its ongoing success as a firm foundation, this year’s show will include Asian art, a field that has had relatively little representation in Paris until now. Parcours des Mondes is now the most important international event for both tribal and Asian art. This year, half of the participants will come from abroad. They will include galleries from Belgium, the United States, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, Spain, Italy, Morocco, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and other parts of France, and will join their Parisian counterparts who maintain a permanent presence in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood. This Quartier exceptional gathering of experts and artworks takes place at multiple SAINT-GERMAIN-DES-PRÉS venues, the participants being located in galleries each at most a short stroll from the others. Visitors to the show experience an unparalleled selection of art offerings as they walk the charming and picturesque streets of this historic neighborhood, which has become the world capital for tribal art. Each gallery offers an individualized and intimate presentation of exclusive masterpieces from Africa, Oceania, the Americas, or Asia. These range from easily affordable ethnographic works to rare and coveted artworks much sought after by collectors. The fair’s success hinges on a combination of complementary elements: the healthy state of the tribal art market, an ever increasing interest in the arts it represents, the efforts made by dealers to produce high-quality thematic exhibitions, and those made by the fair’s vigilant management to ensure that the highest standards are upheld. Parcours des Mondes is rigorous in its selection of dealers it includes and of the material they display. Arts
