EDITORIAL Parcours des Mondes is ce leb rating its nineteenth y ear in 2 0 2 0 . G iven th e f act th at it h as long been home to the highest concentration of art dealers anywhere on the planet, it was fitting— perhaps even inevitable—that Paris’ 6th arrondissement was chosen in 2001 as the location to stage the world’s most important tribal art event. Given the complex international context we find ourselves in today, it is more vital than ever that the realms of art and culture continue to function. If not, “then what are we fighting for?” as some attribute Winston Churchill to have said. A s such , it is a p ositive develop m ent th at Parcours des Mondes w ill b e ab le to b e h eld as p lanned this year, from September 8–13, 2020, as always in the historic Beaux-Arts neighborhood in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. A wide variety of unique and fine artworks from five continents will once again converge at the intersections of Rue de Seine, Rue Mazarine, and Rue Guénégaud. Everyone from inveterate co llect ors to m ore ca sual art lovers w ill b e ab le to ap p reci ate, co ntem p late, and acq uire th e artw ork s th at are som etim es co llect ively ref erred to af f ect ionately in F rench as les arts du Lointain, or “arts from faraway places”. ÉDITORIAL Le Parcours des mondes atteint en 2020 sa dix-neuvième année d’existence. Compte tenu de sa concentration en galeries d’arts unique au monde, il était inévitable que le VIe arrondissement soit choisi en 2001 pour accueillir le plus grand événement mondial dans le domaine des arts premiers et nous en sommes très fiers. Malgré le contexte international complexe que nous connaissons, il est plus que jamais indispensable que les domaines des arts et de la culture continuent de fonctionner. « Sinon pourquoi nous battons-nous ? » aurait dit Winston Churchill. C’est donc une très bonne chose que le Parcours des Mondes puisse se tenir cette année, du 8 au 13 septembre, dans le quartier historique des Beaux-Arts, en plein cœur de SaintGermain-des-Prés. C’est au carrefour de la rue de Seine, des rues Mazarine et Guénégaud, que convergeront une multitude de pièces uniques provenant des cinq continents. Collectionneurs aguerris ou simples amateurs d’art pourront ainsi apprécier, contempler et faire l’acquisition d’œuvres appartenant à ce que l’on nomme joliment les « arts du Lointain ». Permettez-nous enfin d’adresser nos remerciements à Pierre Moos ainsi qu’à toutes les personnes qui ont rendu possible cet incontournable rendez-vous de l’art tribal à travers le monde. Merci à eux d’avoir réuni une cinquantaine de marchands d’arts premiers et un très grand nombre de galeries participantes autour d’une passion commune, celles des arts premiers.

INTRODUCTION Parcours des Mondes is now in its nineteenth year and has established itself in the field of nonEuropean art as the world’s premier event for the arts of Africa, Oceania, the Americas, Asia, and anci ent ci viliz ations. It will host about fifty French and international dealers this year, once again showing the finest artistic creations from five continents. In this catalog, which features the most highly respected art g alleries in th eir areas of sp eci aliz ation, y ou w ill see som e of th e m asterp iece s th ey w ill be exhibiting from places as varied as the Côte d’Ivoire or Gabon, Australia, medieval Japan, and even the Roman Empire. After having opened Parcours des Mondes to A sian art in 2 0 0 5 and to classical archaeology last year, we have decided to maintain this multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural course that allows our collectors and visitors to enjoy the widest possible variety of artw ork s select ed w ith rig orous cr iteria to m eet th e h ig h est standards of q uality and artistic excellence. In most cases, we are witness here to the ancestral and traditional skills and abilities of artists w h ose nam es h istory h as not retained b ut w h ose virtuosity rem ains th eir leg acy . I t is th is w orld of artistic sensib ilities th at Parcours des Mondes h as b een f ocu sed up on and h as b roug h t to its audience s f or th e p ast nineteen y ears. The 2020 edition of the fair will be no different in this respect, despite the COVID-19 crisis which has hit our corner of the art world—and indeed the entire cultural milieu we hold so dear—very h ard. A lth oug h th e p andem ic w ill req uire us to im p lem ent sp eci al m easures th is y ear, Parcours des Mondes ow ed it to its f aith f ul dealers, visitors, and co llect ors to co ntinue to of f er th em a w indow onto the wealth of the world’s cultures, within a framework that complies with the government mandated health directives, of course. In order to ensure everyone’s well-being, clear signage is p osted and a ca lendar f or online ap p ointm ents is availab le f or every g allery th at h as req uested it. These will help manage the flow of visitor traffic and clearly define the social distancing rules th at need to b e ob served. M ask s and disinf ect ant g el w ill b e distrib uted up on req uest and at no ch arg e. P rotect ing our dealers and attendees w h o h ave b een f aith f ul to us f or nearly tw enty y ears now is our h ig h est p riority . Solidarity between all the actors involved in the market for these “arts from remote places” is vital, and th ank s to th e w ill and tenaci ty of our p artici p ants, w h o h ave sh ow n th eir determ ination to keep up their standards and their efforts whatever it takes, forty-five of this year’s fortynine galleries will be physically present in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. INTRODUCTION Établi depuis maintenant dix-neuf ans, le Parcours des mondes s’est imposé dans le paysage des arts extra-européens comme la manifestation de référence dans les domaines des arts d’Afrique, d’Océanie, des Amériques, d’Asie et des civilisations anciennes. Réunissant une cinquantaine de galeries françaises et internationales, le Parcours des mondes est un véritable tour du monde des productions artistiques des cinq continents. Dans ce catalogue, qui regroupe le nec plus ultra des galeries d’arts spécialisées dans les arts anciens, vous trouverez autant de chefs-d’œuvre, qu’ils viennent de la Côte d’Ivoire ou du Gabon, des confins de l’Australie, du Japon médiéval, ou encore de la civilisation romaine. Après son ouverture aux arts asiatiques en 2005 et à l’archéologie classique lors de la précédente édition en 2019, nous avons choisi de maintenir cette vision pluridisciplinaire et pluriculturelle qui a permis aux collectionneurs et aux visiteurs de se confronter à une multiplicité de créations, de sensibilités et d’expressions artistiques, selon une sélection répondant aux critères les plus exigeants en matière de rigueur, de goût et de soin. Car il s’agit bien là d’une mise en exergue des savoir-faire ancestraux d’artistes dont trop souvent l’Histoire n’a pas retenu le nom, mais se souvient de la virtuosité. C’est cette vision, tout à la fois sensible et esthétique, que le Parcours des mondes a su mettre en lumière aux cours des dix-neuf dernières années. L’édition 2020 n’échappe pas à cette règle et ce malgré la crise sanitaire liée à la Covid-19, qui aura durement frappé notre secteur et l’entièreté du milieu culturel qui nous tient tant à cœur. En dépit des contraintes inhérentes à cette pandémie, le Parcours des mondes se devait, pour répondre aux souhaits des marchands, des visiteurs et des collectionneurs, de montrer une fois encore toute la richesse des cultures du monde, et ce, bien entendu, dans le respect des normes et consignes sanitaires édictées par le gouvernement. Afin garantir la sécurité de tous, une signalétique précise et un calendrier de rendez-vous en ligne – disponible pour chaque galerie en ayant fait la demande – ont été mis en place afin de faciliter la gestion des flux de visiteurs et in extenso la bonne tenue de la distanciation sociale en vigueur. Masques et gel hydroalcoolique seront également distribués gratuitement. Protéger nos membres et visiteurs qui nous assurent de leur fidélité depuis bientôt vingt ans reste pour nous une priorité. La solidarité entre tous les acteurs du marché des arts dits « du Lointain » étant indispensable, c’est aussi grâce à la volonté et la ténacité des galeristes et des participants qui ont eu à cœur, coûte que coûte, de maintenir leurs efforts, que sur les 49 galeries ayant répondu à l’appel, 45 seront présentes à Saint-Germain-des-Prés, comme le veut la tradition. Pour les autres, nous avons choisi de développer en parallèle à notre édition physique un volet digital, permettant à tous les exposants absents en raison de la pandémie d’être représentés au sein de notre manifestation sur notre site internet (www.parcours-des-mondes.com) et d’être eux aussi, d’une certaine façon, parmi nous. Cette volonté d’exister, les participants du Parcours des mondes l’ont également mise à l’épreuve afin de proposer, comme chaque année, une série d’expositions thématiques de qualité pour approfondir toujours plus notre savoir sur toutes ces spécialités. Enfin, c’est avec joie que le Parcours des mondes s’associe cette année avec la Monnaie de Paris et son exposition sur les poids à peser l’or Ashanti : Akan : les valeurs de l’échange, une exposition qui tombait à point nommé pour la XIXe édition du Parcours des mondes. Ainsi, en attendant, peut-être, des jours meilleurs, nous continuerons à défendre, avec force et vigueur, notre ardent désir de partager notre passion pour les arts anciens de tous les horizons. Globe-trotter and art lover Norberto Izquierdo first encountered arts du Lointain ( ‘ arts f rom f araw ay p lace s’) whilst travelling in Oceania. This initial meeting blossomed into a real passion, which he has nurtured for more than ten years now. As he criss-crossed the world, he firstly f oc used on th e c ulture and art of O c eania and A f ric a. I n rec ent tim es, h e h as tak en an interest in Pre-Columbian art. When in Paris, he is a frequent visitor to the art galleries and specialized bookshops of the Arts District centred around Saint-Germain-des-Prés. In common with other c ollec tors and art lovers, h e h as an ac tive p resenc e on soc ial m edia w h ere h e sh ares h is love f or tribal art and seeks to encourage a greater aesthetic appreciation for this field. a w ork of art in its ow n rig h t. What do you think makes Parcours des mondes so special? I’ll never forget my first Parcours des mondes. It represented the first time that I felt confident enough to cross the threshold of some of the top tribal art galleries. Ever since that time, more than 10 years ago, I’ve had a renewed interest in art from far-flung places. The Beaux-Arts district in Saint-Germain-des-Prés takes on a very special, almost exhilarating atmosphere. It’s a great opportunity to meet art lovers, collectors, experts and dealers from all over the world, in some cases for the first time. In your position as Honorary President, which values do you want to impress on collectors and art lovers? Dialogue and interaction. Naturally, I mean this in the sense of people with a common passion sh aring

Grand voyageur et amateur d’art, c’est à l’occasion d’un voyage en Océanie que Norberto Izquierdo a eu son premier contact avec les arts extra-européens. De cette rencontre est née une belle passion, cultivée depuis dix ans. Au gré de ses voyages à travers le monde, son intérêt s’est porté, dans un premier temps, sur les cultures et les arts d’Océanie et d’Afrique, puis, plus récemment, sur l’art précolombien. Lorsqu’il est à Paris, il n’est pas rare de le croiser dans les galeries et librairies spécialisées du quartier des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Présent sur les réseaux sociaux, il fait partie de ces collectionneurs et amateurs actifs sur la toile qui partagent leur amour pour l’art tribal et en promeuvent la beauté. ENTRETIEN Qu e

Longtemps, mes acquisitions ont été principalement guidées par l’émotion, j’accumulais simplement les œuvres. Avec le temps et les conseils avisés d’experts et de marchands, j’ai compris qu’une bonne collection, c’est non seulement l’expression d’un coup de coeur, mais également de la patience et de la raison. Aujourd’hui, ma perception a changé, je perçois une collection d’art comme une œuvre à part entière. Qu ’ e s t - c e m

C’est à cette occasion, que j’ai osé, pour la première fois, pousser les portes des grandes galeries d’art tribal, sans appréhension. Et depuis plus de 10 ans, je nourris une passion renouvelée pour ces arts du lointain. Le quartier des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Germain-des-Prés se retrouve animé d’une ambiance, d’une atmosphère particulière, euphorisante. Une occasion idéale pour rencontrer ou retrouver des amateurs, collectionneurs, spécialistes et marchands venus des cinq continents. En

L’échange. L’échange au sens du partage entre passionnés bien entendu, mais aussi au sens de la transmission de l’art tribal, notre passion, aux personnes non initiées. Le Parcours des mondes, le plus grand salon d’art non occidental au monde, est l’événement idéal pour créer ces rencontres et inciter les non-initiés à franchir les portes des galeries d’art. Je suis convaincu que de ces échanges naîtront de nouveaux passionnés qui transmettront, à leur tour, leur engouement pour l’art tribal.
