ASTRONOMY & NATURE AT NIGHT

See a different side to nature, exploring the stars and night sky. A trained guide will take you through the nature preserve while you learn about the many constellations, how to navigate at night, astronomy, and the nocturnal animals in the area. Walking will be on both concrete and unpaved trails. All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an enrolled parent or guardian.

Bird Walk

Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve, with its many different habitats, attracts a diversity of bird species. Join us on the bird walk, where we will use our eyes and ears to discover our avian neighbors. Any age is welcome. In order to hear the bird songs, this will be a quiet walk.

Family Rock Climbing

Family rock climbing is designed for families who want to learn to climb together. Family rock climbing teaches parents the skills necessary to safely climb with their children in an indoor climbing gym. Maximum harness size is a 42” waist and 28” thigh. Price includes one adult and one child. Additional adult or child may also enroll at a cost of $15. Children must be six years of age or older. Please have one adult for every three children.

Haunted Family Camp Out

Join us at Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve for an evening of outdoor games, nature walks, story-telling near the fire, s’mores, and family fun! There will be a tent decorating contest, pumpkin painting, and be sure to bring some candy for ‘tent or treating’. Price is per person. Children under 2 are free. Bring your own picnic style dinner. A small pre-packaged breakfast will be provided in the morning.

Nature Of Oak Point Park Guided Walk

Walk along beautiful Rowlett Creek, through an old growth forest, or amble through a meadow of prairie wildflowers. The beauty and diversity of Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve will amaze you on this guided walk. Learn about the birds, plants, animals, and more, including their names, historic uses, and hidden secrets. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Please register if you plan on attending.

EARLY ACHIEVER’S PRESCHOOL ACADEMY (3-5 YRS)

This fun-filled academic preschool program class utilizes a hands-on, theme-based yearly curriculum that focuses on the academic, social, emotional, physical and creative development of each student. This ongoing academic preschool covers areas of reading, writing, science, safety, health, social studies, math, art, music and movement. Must be potty trained. All supplies are included. Please bring a snack.

INTRO TO MATH & READING (3-6 YRS)

Your preschoolers will learn to take their first steps towards reading and math. Using stories, games, art, and crafts each class will be aimed at preparing your child. Concepts will include an introduction to reading, writing, spelling, rhyming, letter, and sound recognition, adding, subtracting, graphs, time, money calendars, and more. KINDERMUSIK® FEATHERS (NEWBORN/18 MOS/PARENT)

Feathers, the musical poems of Woody Guthrie, bird songs, and the naturally occurring sounds in nature help babies develop an early appreciation and accelerated aptitude for language, movement, and music through the foundations of this class. Do-Si-Do - pick up your baby and dance. Dance the Charleston, the Tango, and the Cha-Cha and learn why dancing with your baby helps develop vital learning skills from head-to-toe. In this class, we’ll play a variety of baby appropriate instruments, and dance with fun props! KINDERMUSIK® WIGGLES & GIGGLES (18 MOS-3 1/2 YRS)

In this unit, you’ll discover more than 30 songs, 15 dances, and eight different instruments which create these unique music activities designed to reflect the importance of movement in the life of a toddler. Home materials will include streamed music for the semester, two themed story books, “Watch Me,” and “Pete & PJ,” and a speciallymade pair of zigzag blocks, an instrument to develop rhythm and hand-eye coordination. LYRICAL DANCE (4-6 YRS)

Lyrical dance is a dance style that embodies various aspects of ballet, jazz, acrobatics and modern dance. Join us for this fun, upbeat class.

PRE-K/KINDER BALLET & TAP (3-5 YRS)

This class emphasizes age-appropriate technique and the development of gross motor skills, balance, musicality and performance abilities. Beginners will learn dance class etiquette. The classroom atmosphere promotes confidence building, teamwork and friendship. The class concludes with two yearly recitals, for which non-refundable recital fees are paid directly to the instructor. The instructor will provide performance dates. Required attire includes a leotard, tights, pink ballet shoes and black tap shoes.

AEROBATS KINDERGYM GYMNASTICS-GIRLS (3-5 YRS)

Enroll your daughter today and let her experience what it is like to be a real gymnast. Students will be taught beginning gymnastics skills on the vault, bars, beam and floor in a fun and safe environment. We make no guarantees that students will move on to the Olympics, but we do guarantee we will provide them a lot of fun!

LIL’ SLUGGERS® MASCOTS (2 YRS/PARENT)

The Mascots curriculum is designed for children to begin their baseball experience in a fun environment that introduces the basics of the game. Children will learn simple base running and recognition, hitting, holding the bat properly, hitting the ball off of a tee, base running and recognition, overhand throwing motions, two hand fielding, and much more.

LIL’ SLUGGERS® MINORS (3 YRS)

The Minors curriculum is designed for children to continue their baseball experience in a fun environment that reinforces the fundamentals of the game. Players will learn proper stance and level hitting off the tee, introduction to pitch hitting, base running and recognition, throwing, twohanded fielding, and much more.

LIL’ SLUGGERS® MAJORS (4 YRS)

The Majors curriculum expands on slightly more technical instruction and game situation skills. Students will learn base running and sliding techniques, proper hitting stance, follow through and level swinging off the tee, as well as begin hitting from a pitch by the coach. Students will also work on proper throwing and catching motions.

LIL’ SLUGGERS® HALL OF FAMERS (5-6 YRS)

The Hall of Famers curriculum is designed for children to continue improving their fundamental skills while preparing them for next level tee-ball. Participants will learn the five steps of hitting formation, base running and recognition techniques, accuracy and distance throwing mechanics, fielding and catching techniques.

SOCCER SPARKS® SOCCER SKILLS (2-3 YRS/PARENT)

Parent and child soccer. By playing fun games, children improve their blossoming balance, coordination, and general motor skills. Aside from learning how to dribble and strike a soccer ball, children and their parents will also get the opportunity to share those first, unforgettable, goal-scoring adventures together.

SOCCER SPARKS® SOCCER SKILLS (3-4 YRS)

Kick the ball. This class is designed to help kids develop their large motor skills by running, dribbling, and kicking the ball while having lots of fun. Children will learn the very basics of soccer through skill demonstrations and games as they transition from parent/child to individual participation.

SOCCER SPARKS® SOCCER SKILLS (4-5 YRS)

Soccer Sparks classes offer participants the opportunity to develop fundamentals and skills of soccer through a variety of drills and training sessions. Our curriculum is very carefully designed and instructed by USSF licensed coaches to fit each age group’s physical, mental and soccer abilities and to prepare them for the next level of play and spark a lifelong passion for the sport.

TINY-HAWK® SOCCER (3-4 YRS)

Enjoy running and kicking just like the big kids. Learn the basic techniques of the game while building self-esteem and learning to follow instructions in a nurturing, fun environment.

TOT GYMNASTICS (19-35 MOS/PARENTS)

This 45-minute, parent-involved class includes guided activity as well as time for exploration and opportunities for your child to be independent. The instructor is there to help guide the activities and introduce skills for your little one to try when they are ready. In this class, we work on introductory gymnastics skills, locomotor skills, jumping and landing on their feet. We also incorporate group activities, safe risk-taking opportunities, and success-oriented activities that children can perform on their own to establish a strong foundation of self-confidence. Every child must be accompanied by one participating adult. Both children and parents must wear athletic attire.

Strengthen vocal technique through various exercises including breathing, harmonizing, timing and performance techniques. Sing and perform songs from popular musicals, and holiday classics. A showcase will be performed on the last day of class.

ARTFUL EXPLORATIONS HOLIDAY ART CAMP (6-13 YRS)

Give your young artist an opportunity to peak their interest in fine art by learning different techniques of oil and acrylic painting on canvas, watercolor painting, oil pastels, charcoal drawing, and more using different mediums. They will learn color theory, brush strokes, perspective and more. You’ll want to frame and hang their masterpieces. Not an arts and crafts class. Dress for a mess and bring paper towels and a snack each day. A $45 supply fee is due to the instructor on the first day of camp.

ACRYLIC PAINTING: PAINT POURING: DIRTY POUR (7-15 YRS)

Your artist will indulge in this exciting paint pouring technique while watching incredible cells form before their eyes. We will be pouring several paint colors (of their choice) into a cup and pouring them onto an 11” x 14” canvas; creating something amazing. All supplies are included, along with a take home tray. Aprons are available and we recommend wearing clothing you don’t mind getting paint on.

Your artist will be creating beautiful, one of a kind art work on stretched canvas. Your artist will be creating beautiful, one of a kind art work on stretched canvas. While celebrating uniqueness and creativity, we mix, pour, spread, swipe, and torch acrylic paints using an array of unconventional tools. Anyone can create something beautiful. Basics Of Hand Building With Clay

Using hand-building and coil techniques, students will get a feel for making beautiful works of functional and sculptural ceramic art. Students will create their own designs as well as copy examples of historic pieces. This class will help develop your sculpting skills and empower you to a higher artistic ability. Tuition does not include clay material. You will need to purchase 25 lbs. of clay prior to the start of class. The most common clay used is called trinity white. This beginner’s level soap-making class uses the hot process method. After learning soap-making safety and some science, we will use a simple recipe and create and customize our very own soap. BELAY TRAINING (16 YRS & UP)

Learn the basics of climbing and rope-handling, including tying a figure-eight knot, climbing commands, and belaying. All equipment required to climb is provided. Maximum harness size is a 42” waist and 28” thigh. Participants must register in groups of two or more. Parent/guardian must complete waiver for those under 18 years of age.

Pencil Art

This still life, floral, and landscape class explores clay-based, wax, graphite, watercolor, charcoal, and pastel pencils. Many people admire the talents of portrait artists, but they may not realize that much of the ‘so-called’ talent is simply techniques anyone can learn. Soap Making

This beginner’s level soap-making class uses the hot process method. After learning soap-making safety and some science, we will use a simple recipe and create and customize our very own soap. This class includes detailed guidance, all materials, helpful notes, and a list of reputable suppliers. Please note we will be using sodium hydroxide, a caustic material. Safety gear will be provided and required during the class. Class meets at LRC.

Enjoy a relaxing watercolor session. You will create an 11” x 15” watercolor work of art. The image is already on the watercolor pad, ready to paint. All supplies are included.

You Can Paint

Even if you’ve never held a brush or can’t draw a straight line, you’ll be amazed at the beautiful oil painting you can complete in one fun and inspiring lesson. Beginners learn basics of color mixing, brushstrokes, and perspective while completing a detailed landscape or seascape. All supplies are provided. Bring paper towels and wear old clothes. AARP’s drivers’ safety course is for people 50 years of age or older. Please check with your own insurance company first to see if they accept the certificate. It cannot be used to dismiss traffic citations. Pay $4 now for facility usage and $20 on the day of class to the instructor if you’re an AARP member or $25 if you’re not a member. Beginning Monday, September 18, the SJC Staff will lead a one-mile walk Monday through Friday in Harrington Park. Meet at the south doors of the center at 9:30am to join us. Together we will walk 30 miles in 30 days!

Friday Tai Chi Practice

Class begins with a 10-minute warm-up exercise. Then class will practice many Tai Chi forms beginning with 8 form, then 16 form, 24 form, 48 form, and 42 form. After a brief pause, class will continue with Tai Chi sword and Tai Chi fan routines. Please note this is not an instructional class. Prior experience with Tai Chi forms is required to benefit from class.
