Winter-Spring 2018 Classes G.O.A.L. courses encompass the study of history, arts, sciences, literature/writing, wellness, and other topics. Our aim is to provide adults 50 years and older a no-stress, continuing education environment that includes interesting lectures, stimulating discussions, and social interaction; all at a very reasonable price. Classes are offered at Carpenter Park Recreation Center.

With the purchase of a G.O.A.L. membership ($112), individuals 50 years and older can register for up to six G.O.A.L. continuing education classes out of roughly 20-25 classes being offered each session for free. These same classes average $48 for non-G.O.A.L. members. A G.O.A.L. membership also gives you the opportunity to register early and guarantees you a spot in the class of your choice. Fred Smith Lone Star Nation Charles Fred Smith is a native Texan who served 40 years in the U.S. Army and retired in 1995 as a Brigadier General. Mr. Smith has a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Abilene Christian University and a M.S. degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. He has had numerous military assignments all over the world and retired in Plano. He is presently an instructor in the SAIL Program of Collin College. His primary area of instruction is modern (post 1800) history with a particular interest in the 20th Century. Summary: Texas is unique in that it joined the union as an established and recognized nation. The story of how this happened is an adventure in learning, as Texas is a meld of cultures that came together at a critical time in United States history. In many ways, Texas provided the backdrop for the idea of Manifest Destiny, or the settling of the West. The story of Texas is the story of America in a nutshell. Learn how this unique gathering of white settlers, Mexicans, Native Americans, AfricanAmerican slaves, fugitives and even a couple of politicians whom their voters sent packing ultimately became something greater than the sum of its parts.

Explore Modern Architectural History (1880’s - present) by taking virtual tours of some of the world’s most famous cities. Learn modern influences affecting each city’s development, famous modern landmarks and their importance to the city’s fabric, and visit the interior of some of the world’s newest structures. The Life & Works of Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci painted some of the world’s most appreciated works of art, but this universal genius of the Italian Renaissance also conceptualized such modern marvels as the tank, “flying machines,” cannons, solar power, and the calculator. For the past several years, he has taught art, personality, math, and history programs for people 55+ at both UNT and Collin College. CYNTHIA TARI Opulence & Extravaganza: Royal Palaces & Gems
Cynthia Tari holds professional degrees in both law and architecture, with minors in art and art history. She worked for three seasons as the site coordinator and site recorder for an archaeological excavation outside Rome, Italy along the ancient Via Gabina. This site produced many significant historical artifacts, the most prominent being an ancient mosaic floor emblema depicting a Greek mythological scene. The room’s mosaics and in situ stone revetment are now housed and on display in the National Museum in Rome, Italy. Ms. Tari’s architecture experience includes working on high-rise building projects such as 125 High Street in Boston, as well as historical renovations, institutional projects, largescale residential, and single-family residential projects. Ms. Tari is also an attorney, mediator, and arbitrator in the fields of family and construction law and has worked on many high-profile cases, including the Dallas Cowboy practice facility collapse and the Fort Worth Water Gardens case. Linda Wexler is a retired high school teacher and has taught U.S. and World History in collaborative learning environments throughout her career.
