VOLUNTEERS LOVE PLANO! When Plano was named the 2019 Happiest City in America by WalletHub, we felt the love at VIP. Our local media asked, “What was the secret that makes Plano residents so happy?” The answer can be found among the volunteers who donate their time to the community they are proud of. Each time our story was told, we emphasized how volunteers are essential to the City’s mission of providing excellent programs and services. This year, 110 volunteers reached the milestone of serving the City for 10 years or more. These individuals serve in a range of departments and almost all of them call Plano home. Finishing out our year of recognition, I was honored to receive a national IMPACT Award from the Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement. This award recognizes emerging leaders in the field of volunteer management. DEDICATED TO SERVICE This year we celebrate 110 volunteers who have served more than ten years of service with the City of Plano. Six volunteers from the Plano Animal Shelter gave a combined 38,325 hours to the shelter’s mission of providing exemplary services. The Plano Public Library has 14 volunteers with a combined 190 years of service across all five locations. They bring friendship and positivity to the library team in countless ways. The Plano Police Department has 23 dedicated volunteers who have patrolled neighborhoods and supported community education programs. Sustainability & Environmental Education has 14 volunteers who continuously promote recycling, living green and stewardship of our natural resources. Thank you to everyone who has answered the call to serve.

VIP SUPERVISOR OF THE YEAR Each year VIP recognizes a staff member who excels at leading volunteers in their department. This year’s Supervisor of the Year is Heather Harrington, CVA, sustainability volunteer coordinator for the Environmental Health & Sustainability Department/Live Green in Plano. Harrington was chosen for this award because of the fantastic work she has done to elevate her volunteer program and provide meaningful opportunities for the volunteers she works with. One volunteer shared that she “encourages volunteers to actively participate and demonstrates the quality of service leadership, which is quite rare and unique.” Because of her ability to motivate volunteers in their service, City of Plano programs are a leader in environmental health and sustainability volunteer programs. When asked how Heather felt after receiving her award, she said she was “truly H E AT H E R H A R R INGTO N , CVA honored to be the recipient of the prestigious Volunteers in Plano Volunteer Supervisor of the Year award. I have the privilege of working with Live Green in Plano Volunteers who are dedicated environmental stewards, and are passionate about making our community (and world) a better place. I feel very lucky to work with such wonderful volunteers, and for a city that values volunteerism. Volunteers are truly the heart of our city, and it is very fulfilling serving alongside them.”
CITY STAFF SUPPORT AREA NONPROFITS This year, Plano staff engaged in activities that supported their neighbors going through difficult times and the agencies that serve at-risk populations. Through a volunteer event at the North Texas Food Bank, staff learned about food insecurity and packed 6,875 meals. At the annual coat drive, staff donated 200 coats which went directly into the hands of our homeless neighbors through a partnership with Streetside Showers. The Adopt-An-Angel program finished strong with donations to Meals on Wheels of Collin County and the Assistance Center of Collin County. We provided 73 Plano residents a joyous holiday season. Our staff are committed to responding to the needs of the community through collaboration with our nonprofit partners. Thank you to all Plano staff who participated in these activities.
TRAINING PROVIDES STAFF WITH TOOLS FOR SUCCESS Each year VIP presents training opportunities for paid staff to gain confidence in their leadership of volunteers. This year, we partnered with subject matter experts who facilitated discussions on program evaluation and providing inclusive volunteer opportunities. Thank you to Brianna Hobbs from the University of Texas at Dallas, Dr. Laura Keyes from the University of North Texas, Morisa Myrick from My Possibilities, and Diana Corona from the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program for giving staff real strategies to empower their programs.
