ost of us parents hear that pleading tone from their child at some point asking: “Pretty please may we get a puppy?!” As such, we should all be prepared to make the correct decision for our clan. Though some of us aren’t convinced, it’s important to know that being a pet owner isn’t as rough as you may think. Pets foster family bonds, teach kids responsibility, promote physical activity, encourage a nurturing personality and provide comfort. Overall, welcoming Fido into the home can help kids become the following.

Responsible. As child education theorists might agree, children need the opportunity to learn things on their own. By having a family pet, your children can be encouraged to love and care for them, leading them to understand the importance of nature and the responsibility of life. Being given the opportunity to show responsible decision making can help youngsters not only understand the responsibility of life, but also develop skills that will teach them accountability and respect for animals.

Empathetic. Being able to empathize is an important part of emotional and social development for kids. It af10 I parentguide News I August 2013

fects behavior toward others and the quality of social relationships, especially into kids’ future years. Young children are not cognitively able to experience empathy but an early development of empathy can help a child grow into a compassionate adult. In the article Children and their Pets: Exploring the relationships between pet ownership, pet attitudes, attachment to pets and empathy, Joanne M. Williams and her colleagues say that pet ownership offers children the opportunity to engage in nurturing and caring behavior toward another living creature. This is likely support the development of empathy. Giving your children an opportunity to care for an animal (with your help, of course) teaches them the importance of responsibility and allows them to learn compassion, care and kindness toward living creatures.

Physical activity. In today’s society, there is an overwhelming number of children who are not as physically active as they should be. Owning a dog, for example, can encourage children to go outside and play. Throwing a ball and chasing a romping pet around the backyard can truly lead, even in a small way, to a more active lifestyle. Studies of physical activity and exposure that goes into famparentguidenews.com

ily pets and the positive effects it can have on children have been an eye opener to those looking for the positive effects of owning animals. For example, in Pets and Children, Judith J. Becerra, she concludes that “having a pet can lower high blood pressure, prevent heart disease and reduce depression. By exposing children to germs, pets may help build children’s immune systems. Another concern is that of allergies in childhood. The study Clinical & Experimental Allergy by Lodge, C. J., and his colleagues shows that children who are raised around pets to the age of 12 have had decreased or had no effect on allergic disease.

Proof

Comforted. It’s important for parents to make sure children feel safe and comforted. Pets can offer the aforementioned and foster the experience of bonding. Moreover, developing a bond with a pet can teach children the importance of love, compassion and friendship. With a simple cuddle of a bunny can change a child’s mood from tears to giggles and smiles. A lick on the cheek from a furry friend can turn a frown into a broad grin. From early childhood to adulthood, these levels of emotional support from a pet can lead to better overall mental and physical health. These are the same reasons therapeutic animals are used in school settings, hospitals and nursing homes.

now that you’ve seen some of the positive reasons to own a family pet, you hopefully know all the reasons that “Yes is the right answer to, “Pretty please may we get a puppy?! Kira Hayes is a mom or two and studies psychology full-time at National University. Her pet family has always been large and currently consists of a Friesian Sport horse, an Australian Shepherd, a Golden Retriever puppy and a 2-year-old rabbit. She volunteers her time at animal shelters, veterinarian offices, horse farms and special needs animal farms. She can be contacted at kira.hayes@gmail.com.

A Fare Fight W

by Gabrielle Welch, NC, CHHC

Saving kids from processed foods.

e live in a world of fake, fast, and junk foods, which are easy, convenient, and cheap. But now we’re paying a price for consuming such foodstuffs— and so are our kids. One in three children born in the year 2000 is expected to be obese by the time he reaches the age of 18.

How did we get here? Simply put, children have become removed from the source of their food. Do apples, carrots, and ground beef magically appear on supermarket shelves? Where does the food we eat come from, and is it really food? When your child eats something, does he understand that it originally came out of the ground from a seed, or that it was recently a living, breathing animal? Processed food in a wrapper or bag that has been highly altered and processed for taste is not healthy food! When we eat processed, alternative foods comprised of sugars, salts, and fats, we crave more. That’s how the fast food industry and junk food manufacturers get rich and our kids get sick. By consuming cheap fare that is highly addictive and genetically modified, our bodies begin to deteriorate. Even worse, our kids now expect food to be incredibly salty (think pre-packaged lunches) or incredibly sweet. So when you try to give them an apple or carrot, they think it tastes “blah.” Some children don’t even know what real food tastes like anymore.

additives in food

The brain is the most food-sensitive organ in the body. Consuming toxins on a daily basis dramatically impacts children’s health, IQ, and performance in both the classroom and on the playing field. We must educate our children with the powerful knowledge of keeping a healthy, nutritious diet in order to maintain a well-balanced life. With obesity rates on the rise, our children are at a greater risk than ever before. Putting an end to the standard American diet of highly processed foods and sugary drinks can prevent disastrous health concerns, such as high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, and heart conditions.

When it comes to guiding children along a path of healthy eating, American parents face a remarkable challenge. From genetically modified foods and artificial sugars to toxic additives like MSG, food coloring, and cheap substitutes like high fructose corn syrup, harmful ingredients may be present at practically every meal. Most parents don’t realize the Gabrielle Welch, NC, CHHC, is a mom activist, public speakeffects of toxic eating until their kids are sick, build allerer, and author of Pizza Trap: Every Mom’s Guide to Breakgies, or are malnourished. Self-Defense

by Charley and Tracy Vega

Teaching kids about personal safety.

Have you signed up your child in a martial arts class? They are extremely popular and amazing for self-confidence and discipline. Of course, enrolled students learn how to defend against a punch or a kick. However, the reality is that a perpetrator isn’t likely going to punch or kick your child. The attacker will probably grab children by the arm or cover their mouths. Further, kids can be tricked into unsafe situations by simply having a conversation. One of the easiest conversation starters can occur when your child’s name is printed on his shirt, backpack, lunch box, jewelry, or other accessory. If a unbeknownst attacker calls out to your child by his name, your son would probably engage with the stranger. We teach our kids not to be rude, but they should know there are times when it’s okay to be distant. For a safer and more creative alternative, make stickers with your child’s favorite cartoon character or a picture of a pet. This way, his belongings have something that is specific to him. Tell his teacher or daycare professional that this is how you would like to identify your child. We are all familiar with the term “stranger danger.” It’s scary to say it, yet kids hear it all the time. Wouldn’t it be helpful to talk to them about a safe list? When you make a safe list for your child, you’ll want to involve him. Pick five to seven people at most to put on the list. It could include a grandparent, an aunt, an older sibling, etc. Once you have identified who will be on the list, test your child’s knowledge of each person. Make a game out of it. Ask your child questions that will help him to identify the people on the safe list: What color car does Uncle

Mike drive? Do you know how to spell Pastor Joe’s first and last name? Do you know Aunt Barbara’s cell phone number? Instead of children viewing everyone as a potential threat, kids can look to those they know and trust. Let them know if anyone other than the people on their safe list tries to pick them up or take them somewhere that it’s wrong. Let them know you would never send a stranger to get them, only someone on their list. You can also apply these same techniques to when the kids are home alone. If the phone rings and they don’t recognize the name and number on the caller ID, don’t allow them to answer. This should also be the case if someone comes to the front door. If you are not expecting anyone, and the kids can see the person at the door is someone they don’t know, never allow them to answer or open it. You don’t want anyone to know they are home alone. One of the simplest things you can teach your child is personal space. We all have a comfort zone. If someone approaches you or your child, making you feel uncomfortable, put your hand up toward the approaching person’s eye level and say something like, “What do you want?” or, “Please stop, you’re making me uncomfortable.” You get the idea. This tells the potential intruder that you and your child are not easy targets. Without saying a word, it also alerts people around you that you are uncomfortable. Most likely, someone will call 911 to say there could be a potential problem. This is a great technique for kids to use since they already raise their hands in school all the time! Have some fun and practice with them. It could just save a life.

T

he age-old debate of hands-on versus hands-off parenting hit new levels with the emergence of Amy Chua’s Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother (Penguin Books) and Pamela Druckerman’s Bringing Up Bébé (Penguin Press HC). Tiger mom and laissez-faire parenting styles do carry both positive and negative effects for children, and both approaches need to be blended in order to parent children to their best potential. We have all heard stories about the extreme tiger moms— their children come home from school with a 99/100 on an exam and are punished for not receiving a perfect score. This type of parenting may breed anxiety in children, and they tend to struggle massively with decision making and self-esteem. When parents are constantly telling children what to do and not to do, their independence and decision-making skills become stunted as it is not necessary for them to think for themselves. Tiger parents tend to think that they are building their children’s self-esteem by constantly pushing them to be perfect. However, they are actually depleting their confidence by constantly reiterating to their children that they are not good enough. Although children of this extreme parenting style do feel supported by their overly involved parents, I would personally advise against this parenting style. Tiger-parented children base their qualities and traits on externals, like how smart they are or how they excel at a particular sport. Should they fail, even slightly, they will completely internalize their feelings and 16IR_Aug I parentguide News I August 2013

emotions and become closed off. On the other extreme, parents who utilize the French style raise more independent children than their tiger counterparts. But children raised under this style tend to rely heavily on learning themselves, rather than being taught right from wrong by their parents. These laissez-faire parents may have an unrealistic view of what children can accomplish at a young age. Their children may not get enough of the tools or structure they need in order to effectively develop life skills. I also wouldn’t recommend the “Bébé-style” of parenting. Children need limits and structure in order to grow and function in society. Parents need to be involved in teaching their children in order for them to learn to solve problems in an effective way. An ideal style is blending both the tiger and laissez-faire parenting approaches. With this combination, parents partner with their children and teach them the skills they need, but they don’t micromanage them or take a hands-off mentality. Both extremes are not intuitive to the success and growth of a healthy child. It is important to provide structure for children while allowing them to experience their own consequences. I have seen that many baby-boomer parents who grew up in a laissez-faire environment have now turned into tiger parents with their own children as they feel the need to be overly involved. I find that the most beneficial way for parents to teach children parentguidenews.com

life skills is through role playing. For example, if your child is having a problem with a teacher or friend, sit down with him and act out a conversation between your child and that teacher or friend while portraying your child. By playing the role of your child, you will teach him how to effectively speak to someone and discuss an issue rather than forcing him to figure it out on his own. If we give children the tools to be their own advocates, they will. In addition, their confidence and independence will blossom. Not only will children reap the benefits of a parent who isn’t extreme, but also parents’ anxiety will significantly decrease, giving children the means to work out their problems. by Michael L. Fitzgerald

for

When you’re running around after a toddler all day, thinking about his college education may not make it to the top of your priority list. College may seem a long way away, but your child’s first day of preschool can quickly turn into his freshman year. We all know that the value of a higher education is undeniable. However, the price of receiving a college education is also undeniably high. During the past decade, college costs have increased nearly 51 percent. Many families rely on financial aid to combat these costs, thinking that assistance will come in the form of scholarships and grants that do not have to be repaid. The fact is about 60 percent of federal financial aid is in the form of loans that not only have to be repaid, but also done so with interest. As a way to offset the need for loans and keep families from getting saddled with debt, Section 529 college savings and prepaid tuition plans are manageable and affordable alternatives. A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged investment plan designed to encourage saving for the future higher education expenses. This means all withdrawals from 529 plans for qualified education expenses remain free from federal income tax. Many states mirror the federal tax advantages for 529 plans by offering state tax-deferred growth and tax-free withdrawals for qualified higher education expenses. Saving for a loved one’s college education is one of the most rewarding things you can do for his future. But, it can be challenging if you don’t know where or how to start. To begin, the College Savings Plans Network (CSPN) recommends the following steps.

Qualified 529 Expenses Checklist Tuition Room and Board Mandatory Fees Books Supplies Equipment required for enrollment or attendance 18 I parentguide News I August 2013

Affordable alternatives to offset the cost.

Define your savings goals: Determine how much you want to save for your child’s education. Do you want to save for tuition only or room and board, as well? Are you planning to fund four years of college, or just two? Will the school be public or private? Defining your goals will help you to establish how much you should save and measure your progress. Find your fit: Nearly every state offers at least one 529 plan. You can determine which college savings plan is best for your needs by comparing 529 plans by feature and state. States often offer special benefits for residents such as state income tax deductions/credits, matching grants, or scholarship opportunities. Many people who select a 529 savings plan choose age-based investment options, as the account will automatically adjust the risk level as the beneficiary grows up. Budget: Use a college cost calculator to determine the estimated cost of college when your child is ready to enroll. This could help you decide how much to incorporate into your monthly budget for college savings. Or, you can choose to save nearly any amount of money that your family budget allows. Start early and save often: If you can, start saving as early as possible, right after your child is born. The earlier you start saving the easier it is. You’ll be able to put away a smaller amount and will have more time for your money to potentially grow. It’s never too late to start, but the later you do it, the more aggressive you’ll need to be with your investments. Save as much as you can afford: Take a look at your budget and see how much you can dedicate toward saving for college. Many plans offer minimum contributions that are as little at $25 a month. Even that small amount a month can add up over time. The key is to get started and gradually increase your monthly savings over time. Review routinely: It’s also advisable that the account owner routinely reviews the account and determines if the risk tolerance or life circumstances have changed. Things like having another child or a change in job status can influence how much you can afford to save. Review and adjust your savings strategies accordingly.

The mission is to preserve, celebrate and respect children’s right to play. As an early childhood program, children receive a quality educational experience within a nurturing environment that links families and educators in a community of natural learning and care. for you! Dancing Divas and Dudes believes that dance improves many fundamental foundations: from math (putting patterns together, counting and retaining) to giving presentations (listening to the music, smiling, remembering the steps, being aware of your peers and being in front of an audience). Students truly celebrate the art of dance at Dancing Divas and Dudes. Building on three generations of dance schools in Texas, this inspiring program shares teaching techniques and dance styles amassed during the last 90 years. Founder Julie Swift coupled her expertise in dance with her mother and grandmother’s teaching ideas to create this unique, evolving program that is taught at preschools as well as two studios on the UWS and UES. Classes for younger children combine ballet and tap, while the older students may select ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop or acro. Company members compete at Dance Competitions. Parents say that along with learning new moves and techniques, their children gain self-esteem, body awareness and a sense of accomplishment that fosters overall learning and development. Dancers are able to remember their well-choreographed dances independently, and students gain stage presence and confidence by performing throughout the year, including at an annual recital. Pediatric Mental Disorders PART 2

The appointment and diagnosis.

I

by Henry A. Paul, M.D.

n last month’s article Pediatric Mental Disorders Part 1, we covered what mental disorders are and how to know when medical attention is needed. This month, let’s dig deeper. You know your child needs to be seen regularly. But, how do you tell him he needs to go to a psychiatrist? I usually instruct parents to tell their child that they have been concerned about some issue, to name it, and then say they have spoken to a doctor who talks to children about such matters and that an appointment has been made. A good rule of thumb is to give the child enough notice in days for each year of age. So for a 6 year old, I would advise offering him a little reminder of the appointment with the talking doctor each day for six days. For most children, that will suffice. For more anxious children, it might be necessary to describe the doctor and the office. Further, emphasize that

Miss Part 1? Find it at www.parentguidenews.com.

there are no physical interventions, such as needles, and that you will be in the room with the child, if necessary. For the most part, it is better to downplay the appointment so fears won’t build in anticipation. For example: “Joey, we made an appointment with Dr. Paul who talks to kids about school behavior. You can talk to him about what some of the teachers have been saying to you.” At no time should the visit to a doctor be presented as punishment, as a last ditch effort because you “can’t take it anymore,” or for any reason other than to make your child feel better. When you come to the office, you’re usually greeted by the doctor. In most cases, the child is invited to come in on his own. If this proves impossible, I usually invite parents in, at least for the beginning of the session. Sometimes the parent(s) have to stay the whole time if there is high anxiety. Usually the parent is able to stay nearby in the waiting room after a short period of time. The interview with the child is preferably conducted by simply speaking to him. Believe it or not, most children liked being talked to as adults instead of being pulled into a playroom and bombarded with toys that could serve as distractions. Some children who have difficulty conversing for whatever reason, be it age, anxiety, a language disorder, etc., may need the introduction of very limited aids, such as drawing tools, writing implements, puppets, balls, dolls, and so on. After exhausting the presented problem, the physician may do an inventory interview discussing other areas. For example, if the problem was behavior in school, other topics to address could include friendships, family life, hobbies, etc. It may be necessary to have an additional interview with the child to learn about all the important areas of his life. In such an interview, information is gathered, and the psychiatrist also evaluates physical health, coordination, hearing, language and speech skills, eye contact, frustration tolerance, motor activity, relatedness, neurological issues, evidence of mood disturbances, psychotic symptoms like false beliefs, temperament, degree of alertness, intelligence, academic skills, coping abilities, and overall adjustment. After seeing the child, I might ask to see the whole family together, especially if family issues are the focus of the problem. It can be enormously helpful to see how people communicate with each other. Following the questions and interviews, the psychiatrist determines the problem. This process goes further than assigning the child a diagnosis from a manual. It offers a broader appreciation of the child’s development, the family integrity, and the school and friend environment, as well as a view of where things might be going wrong and a plan to get things back on track. All in all, a child psychiatric evaluation can take up to four or five separate interviews. By the time you leave the last interview, you should have a pretty good idea of what the psychiatrist thinks the problem is and if further diagnostic testing is needed. Lastly, a tentative treatment plan is made that should include the type of therapy the child needs, including some form of talk/verbal therapy and possible medications. You’ll likely have many questions, and there should be time allowed for this and further contact by telephone for questions which might enter your mind later. After all, the goal is to help the child get on track in his environment. From the beginning, the psychiatrist should be picturing the end of treatment and working toward that goal. Not only will you be involved in the treatment, but you might also be given the option to get your own counseling or treatment; any help and support you get and any progress you make in your life will reflect on your child, as well.

A general and child and adolescent psychiatrist, Henry A. Paul M.D., has practiced in New York City for more than 30 years. He has appeared on hundreds of national and local television and radio shows. He has evaluated, treated, and prescribed medication for thousands of young people in settings that include hospitals, outpatient public clinics, residences, foster agencies, and private practices. Further, he has followed their progress over the course of many years. He is executive director of the Karen Horney Clinic. your needs, your neighborhood

Use parenting skills to propel your career.

From M.O.M

to C.E.O.

by Debora J. McLaughlin

In the American household, a mom is a woman that leads her team without hesitation or apology. She’ll immediately stop a fight between siblings and uphold vital standards for behavior to keep the home front sane. So, why sit at home after the kids have gone to bed and stare bleary eyed at your laptop while wondering if you have what it takes to succeed in your career? Why not put the essence of your mommy skills to work with only a few simple tweaks? If you are trying to move up the ladder, but keep stumbling on some of the bottom rungs, use three key skills you already have outside the home.

1.

Be descriptive yet succinct. Women are great communicators. You enjoy telling a bedtime story and offering the sounds, descriptions, and voiceovers to enhance its detail. While this is a nice mommy attribute at home, this elaborate communication style can result in eye rolling from colleagues. Use your great ability to communicate, but think of yourself as a reporter in the workplace; just give the headlines and if the full story is needed, offer it in bullet form.

2.

Use the word “no” in your work conversations. You don’t hesitate to say, “No!” when your little darling tries to put a slice of pizza into the brand-new Blu-ray player. So why do you hesitate to say, “No,” to those coworkers that may interfere with progress in your career? Say, “No,” to doing the work that belongs to others, say, “No,” to people who don’t respect your boundaries, and say, “Yes,” to being in charge of your time and your career.

3.

Debora J. McLaughlin, C.E.O. of The Renegade Leader Coaching and Consulting Group, is author of The Renegade Leader (Balboa Press) and the forthcoming Running in High Heels. McLaughlin coaches women on how to use their feminine DNA to advance in their careers, businesses, and leadership. Books are available at www.therenegadeleader.com and www.amazon.com. Visit www.ignitemyspotlight.com to learn more. 40 I parentguide News I August 2013

Don’t hesitate to have your voice be heard. When you are taking a 26-hour road trip to Disneyland, and the twins have threatened to annihilate each other before you even reach the Sunshine State, do you hesitate or wait for a polite pause in the conversation to voice your concern? You know if you do, someone’s going to be crying in the backseat before you even reach the next toll booth. In the business world, you’re protecting your career. If you wait for someone else to make a point before you do, they will. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told the Washington Post, “Learn to interrupt.” Use your power voice and be heard. Express your ideas. Ask for and plan for your own career advancement. Brag, keep inventory of your successes, and don’t be afraid to share them. You already have what it takes to be a C.E.O. inside and outside the home: leading others, achieving goals, building guidelines for behavior, and creating shared values. Use your mommy skills and advance your career.

No More Mold

Add flavor to your dinner with RiceSelect’s new Royal Blend line. The Royal Blend with Quinoa combines Texmati Light Brown with quinoa and freekeh for a rich flavor blend. Another new product, Royal Blend with Flax Seed, mixes Texmati Light Brown with whole wheat pearl couscous, black lentils, and flaxseed to add strong proteins, vitamins, and fiber to your meal. The Royal Blend White, Brown & Red Rice is a great alternative to normal white rice. Perk up your next meal and learn more at www.riceselect.com.

Mold can wreak havoc in any home, causing harm to the entire family, but now there is a new automatic fan switch called DewStop to help solve that issue. The DewStop senses steam and moisture and automatically offers ventilation. It turns on and off when needed to stop the spread of mold. The DewStop is simple to install and can be found at Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowe’s, or www.dewstop.com.

Season National Family Fun Month Finish your summer off right, with your family. August is National Family Fun Month, and it is the last chance you get as a family to do fun things together before the start of the school year. Plan a picnic, book night, or family game night. Pick a weekend for camping, amusement parks, or one last trip to the beach. Select something that the whole family will enjoy, and remember to do it all together.

Frame Your Vacation If your children are looking for the perfect way to spend their rainy day, help them make a Vacation Map Picture Frame. It is a great way to relive your vacation while giving your children a new picture frame for their bedroom. Look for more fun rainy day ideas at www.kaboose.com.

What you need:

• Maps of your vacation route or area • A wooden picture frame • White acrylic paint • White craft glue • Water • Paintbrush • Scissors • Stickers relating to your trip • Acrylic sealer spray

How to make it:

Remove glass from frame and paint the outer and inner edges of the frame. Let dry. Cut sections of your maps. Lay sections over the frame, and be sure you don’t cut them too small. Overlap different sections to cover entire surface of frame. Once you have enough sections of the map to cover the entire frame, position them where you want and bend the excess map around the frame edge. This will create creases for you to trim with scissors. Trim the edges so that your map pieces fit perfectly onto your frame. Put some white craft glue into a small dish and add enough water to thin it to painting consistency. Working with one section at a time, paint a thin layer of glue mixture onto a small section of the frame. Lay the map for that section down on top of the glue mixture and add a little glue mixture on top. Continue this process until all map pieces have been glued down. Once all map pieces are dry, spray the entire surface with acrylic sealer. Add scrapbook embellishment stickers to decorate. Replace the glass and insert your favorite picture.

Mix It Up August 31 is National Trail Mix Day. Instead of going to the store and buying a pre-made bag, here is a recipe perfect for a summer snack that your children will love and can help you make. Visit www.recipe.com for more trail mix recipes.

What you need:

• 1 c. bite-size fish-shaped crackers • 1 c. toasted oat cereal with nuts and honey • 1 c. pretzel sticks or twists • 1 c. raisins, dried tart cherries, dried cranberries, and/or chopped dried pineapple 50IR_Aug I parentguide News I August 2013

National Watermelon Day Keep cool as the summer comes to an end with homemade watermelon sorbet to celebrate the August 3 holiday. It is a delicious way to keep your children happy without having to run to the ice cream parlor. For more homemade sorbet recipes, visit www.allrecipes.com.

What you need:

• 4 c. diced watermelon • 1 c. white sugar • 3 Tbs. lemon juice • 1 dash salt • ¼ c. cold water • 1.25 oz. envelope unflavored gelatin • 1 c. heavy cream

How to make it:

Combine the watermelon, sugar, lemon juice, and salt in a large mixing bowl; stir to coat evenly. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Blend the mixture in a blender until smooth; return to the bowl. Pour the cold water into a saucepan. Sprinkle the gelatin over the cold water; let stand for one minute. Place the saucepan over low heat; cook for two minutes. Stir the gelatin mixture into the blended watermelon mixture. Add the heavy cream; beat with an electric hand mixer at medium speed until the mixture is fluffy. Transfer the mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer’s directions until it reaches “soft-serve” consistency. Transfer ice cream to a one or two-quart lidded plastic container; cover surface with plastic wrap and seal. For best results, ice cream should ripen in the freezer for at least 2 hours or overnight.

Fan Off Join your children for craft time and help them make funny face paper fans. It is a great way to fulfill your children’s time with creativity and laughter. For printable fans and a virtual guide check out www.mrprintables.com/summer-crafts-paper-fan.html.

What you need:

• Paper • Wooden dolly pegs (clothes pegs) • String or yarn

How to make it:

Use your favorite wrapping paper or scrapbook paper or draw your own fun faces on blank side. Make sure the paper is thin enough for easy folding. Start folding like an accordion. Fold the last strip each side backward and glued it so the end is stronger and not sharp. Hold the bottom of the accordion and insert about an inch deep into the wooden dolly peg, making sure there is a tight fit. Wrap the joint with the string and tie.
