Surprising

by Dr. Susanne Bennett

Allergy Anecdotes Approximately 55 percent of Americans suffer from allergies. Pollen, dander, dairy products, gluten, and mold are just a few of the most common allergens. In fact, if you don’t suffer from allergies, you are actually in the minority! Countless people think that their low energy, problems with digestion, or headaches are “normal,” when in fact, they may be the signs of undiagnosed allergic reactions. People who suffer from one allergy also tend to suffer from many others because allergies are often a sign of a deeper dysfunction in your system. Only by getting to the root cause of these allergies can a person eliminate them. So, what might you want to know about allergies?

What to know about common issues.

There are seven types of foods that cause the majority of food allergies. These include: dairy products, gluten products (wheat, barley, and rye), sugar, alcohol, peanuts, eggs, and mold-containing foods (such as many dried fruits, moldy cheeses, and mushrooms). By eliminating or even reducing your intake of these foods, you can help reset your body’s load of allergens and eliminate your allergy symptoms.

There aren’t always visible or seemingly related signs. Allergens don’t always affect the system the way you might think (like with an obvious rash or hives). Plus, symptoms may not appear related. For instance, respiratory allergies can affect more than just the respiratory system, and food allergies can affect more than digestion. In fact, allergic sensitivities to food, such as sugar, can cause joint pain due to inflammation. Gluten sensitivity can produce lethargy and brain fog. Likewise, inhaling mold doesn’t simply affect breathing. It can also cause headaches and itchy skin. Finally, many chemicals, such as MSG or artificial sweeteners can even affect our emotional well-being, producing nervousness and anxiety.

Are you using dairy alternatives? Another common allergy is to soy. While avoiding dairy is essential for healing certain allergies, replacing it with soy can give some people terrible digestion and tiredness. Try almond or coconut options with your allergist’s guidance.

The environment is loaded with allergens. Allergens are carried in our furniture, our cars, the air we breathe, and the water we drink. Toxic chemicals and fungi are two very common types of allergens that may be hidden in our everyday environments. Drugs and creams may worsen allergies. Americans spend more than $4 billion a year to fight their allergies. The majority of that money is spent on doctor visits and medications. Antihistamines and other drugs may provide temporary relief, but their use may be accompanied by uncomfortable side effects. By loading their bodies with difficult-to-process chemicals, people who use such medications may be making their allergies worse. If you’re using beauty products and soaps with chemicals in them (sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens, and phthalates — just to name a few), you may be wearing your body down with chemical allergens. Pores are permeable; you absorb whatever is applied to your skin! 12 I parentguide News I December 2014

MB 12/14

parentguidenews.com

Runny noses and itchy eyes can be due to more than pollen. Pollen is often thought of as the only airborne allergen. However, this allergy is seasonal and usually disappears once plants stop releasing pollen. If you have typical hay fever symptoms (runny nose, watery eyes, swelling, and itchiness) that last year-round, you may actually have mold allergies. Mold is common in any damp area in the home, such as bathrooms and basements. While black mold is visible to the eye, many other forms of mold are not as easy to spot and will build up in humid areas. Mold can also be ingested when we eat certain foods, such as peanuts, dried fruits, green salads, and moldy cheese (Roquefort blue cheese, brie cheese). These should be avoided for mold-sensitive individuals. We can be allergic to chemicals in our tap water. Tap water in America won’t produce acute allergic symptoms. However, it is filled with numerous chemicals to which people have allergic sensitivities. The buildup of such chemicals in our bodies over time can wear them down and lead to even more allergic symptoms. Many people experience itchiness and discomfort after swimming in a chlorinated pool, yet they drink chlorine almost daily in their tap water. Likewise, small amounts of other chemicals, such as arsenic, mercury, fluoride, and even uranium are allowed in our tap water. For this reason, having a carbon-filtered reverse osmosis water purifier is essential to help deal with water-borne allergens. Bad gut bacteria can make you allergic to many foods. There are more than three trillion bacteria in your gut. They help process and digest foods, as well as extract nutrients. However, through improper care of fruits and vegetables, untidy kitchens, and exposures in urban environments, we may ingest bad bacteria that hurt our digestive systems. Bad bacteria in our gut make it

more difficult to process what are known as fermentable carbohydrates. These are the short-chain sugars that are found in countless foods such as beans; broccoli; cabbage; and pitted fruits such as peaches, plums, and cherries. Humans have a difficult time digesting these fermentable sugars because we lack the enzymes to break them down. The end result is intolerance to fermentable carbs, which can produce bloating, gas, cramping, and constipation. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is often the direct result of allergic sensitivities produced by bad gut bacteria. Furniture and cars can trigger chemical allergies. Increasingly, much industrial production depends upon what are known as volatile organic compounds or VOCs. These compounds, such as formaldehyde, are found in many glues, vinyl products, paints, fuels, carpets, and plastics that we encounter daily. For instance, furniture made of particleboard will often use formaldehyde in its glue, while the “new car smell” is actually that of volatile organic compounds in the paint, leather, carpet and glue. VOCs can produce a host of allergic symptoms, such as an itchy throat, headaches, brain fog, and confusion. At high concentrations, it is especially harmful to human health. Allergic sensitivities can make you feel hungover without drinking a drop of alcohol. If you’ve ever woken up irritable, with poor concentration, and with low energy, you might be having a “sugar hangover.” If you eat too much fruit and sugar, the yeast and mold that are common in the gut will begin to ferment it. This fermentation produces an autointoxication that is similar to what happens when you drink too much alcohol. Your body has a “brewery” churning in the gut. As a result, you may feel exactly as you would when hungover! With these bits of information in mind, you should be armed with the knowledge to ask more questions of your healthcare professional to get the answers you need for your family’s allergy care.

Sleep Tips by Debbie Sasson

t is estimated that between 40 and 80 percent of children on the autism spectrum suffer from problems that involve falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking too early. Scientists are unsure exactly what causes this high incidence of sleep challenges, but a big part of the issues stems from struggles with integrating an often over-stimulating world. As a certified sleep consultant and the director of a camp with many children who have special needs, I’ve had firsthand experience with all types of sleep problems. Read on for great tips about how to encourage a good night’s rest.

At camp, I’ve noticed that children on the spectrum have to work really hard all the time to maintain a level of “homeostasis,” or feeling good, in a “neurotypical” world. It’s as if our campers, on a daily basis, walk around performing their everyday tasks while simultaneously doing long division in their heads. In order for them to successfully take on the world, these campers truly need to be well rested, perhaps even more so than a “typical” child.

Ho to encouw r good ni age a ght’s rest.

As a parent, you can help foster healthy sleep habits with the following suggestions.

H Like all children, those with autism need to exercise every day to stay healthy. In order to do this and get to sleep at a reasonable hour, kids should exercise at least two to four hours before trying to sleep.

H Children with autism most likely require an extended amount of time to calm down and become sleepy. At least 30 to 45 minutes should be put aside in the child’s daily schedule to allow for this relaxation period, which means that homework may need to get done earlier or saved for the morning.

H Research shows that dim lights while getting ready for bed create an increase in melatonin, the “sleep hormone” in our bodies. A light dimmer in the child’s room might be well worth the investment.

H Children with special needs often require a great deal of predictability in their lives, and bedtime routines are no exception. Kids may benefit from a sleep rules chart in their room that is age appropriate. It should include the evening schedule from taking a bath, dimming lights, and putting on pajamas to reading, turning off the lights, and settling in to sleep.

H Kids who struggle with sensory integration may find the use of PROOF weighted blankets to be helpful. Others may prefer to sleep on the floor or a hard, rather than a “squishy,” mattress.

H Although it feels counterintuitive, many kids who have trouble www.parentguidenews.com • 212-213-8840 falling or staying asleep at night are often overtired and require an earlier bedtime. It is not unheard of to have school-age children on the spectrum in bed with the lights off between 7:30pm and 8pm.

H Many parents (and doctors) fall into the trap of quickly moving towards the use of synthetic melatonin (the sleep hormone mentioned earlier). There have been a few studies that question the safety of ongoing, nightly use of such products in children. Encouraging healthy sleep habits with the tips above may offer a better place to start. Try integrating these suggestions into your child’s routine, and have sweet dreams!

ocial skills are critical to success at school and in programs. A dear friend once coached me on how to set expectations regarding my child’s friendships. She said, “Your child only needs one friend to feel validated. Teach her how to have one good friend!” With this concept in mind, here are some simple and effective parenting tools to teach your child how to be more social at school and in after-school or weekend activities. With your encouragement, your child may be able to make even more than one friend!

1) Develop confidence and self-respect.

Before a child can venture outside the safety of her family nest, she needs to trust and believe in herself. To foster confidence, believe in your child, and let her know it. Teach her the value of trying and succeeding or rebounding after an un-met expectation. Accept your child for who she is and where she is developmentally. Show interest in projects and programs by asking questions about them. This will build pride in your child’s accomplishments.

s d n e i 6 ways to encourage your child to be social in programs.

2) Help your child to understand non-verbal cues.

The ability to process non-verbal social cues is an essential part of normal communication. While some children are naturally very adept at picking up signals through body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice, other children struggle in this regard. It’s perfectly fine for your child to struggle with these cues. With a little practice, she can catch up with her peers. Facial expression flashcards and silent movies offer wonderful opportunities to practice learning non-verbal cues together. Studies show that just eight weeks of targeted non-verbal social attention can significantly improve a child’s social awareness, which will certainly aid in making friends during after-school programs.

3) Read fiction stories.

New research shows that reading books to or with your child may enhance social skills and the ability to develop a “theory of mind.” A developed theory of mind enables a child to see the world from the perspectives of others, to have a sense of empathy, and to understand that other children have motivations that may clash with her own. After reading a story, ask your child for her opinions about events and characters in the story. Point out certain scenarios that demonstrated how to (or how not to be) a good friend. Your child can use these small lessons (how to share, empathize, etc.) while participating in activities with her peers.

6) Encourage children to be metacogni-

Odds are, your child already has some common ground if she’s in a particular program or activity with peers. This can serve as a wonderful foundation for a budding friendship. Enroll your child in programs that truly match her interests and hobbies, not simply classes that are geared toward increasing academic knowledge (unless, of course, she loves solving math problems in her spare time, too!).

Metacognition simply means “thinking about thinking.” All children have thoughts and feelings about social situations, but many children struggle to understand how the information racing through their minds fits into the bigger picture. Scientific studies show that talking to your children and encouraging them to think about their thoughts can improve their social skills through awareness. “Why do you feel uncomfortable around Susan?” “Being around Kevin makes you happier? Is that because he is honest with his words?” “Mark seems like he shares well; is that why you like to have playdates with him?” Enabling children to sort out their thoughts and feelings goes a long way toward making them capable and confident in social situations. Help your child to use words to solve conflicts, recognize emotions, and self-regulate.

5) Be a good role model.

Parents should participate in networking groups and attend parent workshops and speaker programs where they can make new friends of their own. The Language Workshop for Children Manhattan, Upper Eastside and Westside (212)396-0830 info@thibauttechnique.com www.languageworkshopforchildren.com CNN called Director François Thibaut “one of a very few experts in teaching languages to small children.” Since 1973, his famous Thibaut Technique classes, camps and preschools have introduced French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and Italian to children ages 6 months to 9 years by capturing the critical years when they possess their strongest capacity to absorb language and imitate native pronunciation. During each session, children receive a brand-new, glossy, full-color workbook/CD, which is jam packed with original language-rich songs (and ages 3 and older get an LWFC storybook, too). Best of all, LWFC instructors are native speakers. LWFC materials won six major children’s educational media awards. Parents magazine named the LWFC one of “6 Classes Worth the $.”

Little Picasso NYC 313 E. 61st St., NYC 10065 (646)559-1588 www.littlepicassonyc.com Little Picasso NYC is a children’s art studio. It is a place where children can have fun, get messy, create, and experiment with studio and visual arts. The youngest group of children being 2-years-old and older, as there are no limits in age, are taught to think outside the box and venture into their own magical world of pure imagination while exposed to studio skills at their age appropriate level. The educators believe that traditional art methods implemented for children, including coloring books and adult-manufactured stencils, simply stifle children’s artistic development. At Little Picasso’s classes and programs, young artists use colors, photos, shapes, dough, texture, animals, cut-and-paste, sculpting, drawing, sketching, and much more to discover their inner Picasso. Through multimedia expression, your child is encouraged to be an innovative thinker, problem solver, effective communicator, creative entrepreneur, a leader of the future, and a sharing and caring individual with an emotionally balanced and healthy mind. It is not an arts and crafts establishment. It is an artists studio for budding young artists. Learn more about the specific offerings on the Little PIcasso NYC’s website. I

ndia is amazing, complex, and incredible. All the brochures and guides you read before a trip just somehow don’t seem to nail the explanation. Someone told me long ago that it’s just something you’ve got to see and experience for yourself. I learned this firsthand to be true when I visited with my husband daughter. Traveling so far with a child in tow is not easy, but it’s absolutely doable and worth it!

My travels have been beyond extensive, in all sorts of places, and I will tell you that the level of hospitality in India is on an entirely different level. It is intuitive, gracious, discreet, and genuine, and it really must be experienced to be believed. It’s natural. There’s something beautifully courteous in Indian culture that I believe is innate and cannot be taught. My family and I only saw a small cross section of India, which goes on for thousands of miles through a myriad of subcultures, customs , languages, and landscapes. India should be experienced multiple times; in fact, one may need years to fully complete the journey! For busy families short on vacation time, however, taking an initial trip is great. When you’re ready to go, there are some tips to keep in mind. I debated for quite a while whether or not to bring my daughter who was age 3½ at the time. My husband and I have been taking her around the world with us since she was weeks old, but because the itinerary we had planned was somewhat aggressive, I (for the first time ever) had some reservations. I trusted my instincts, though, and we brought her, which was completely the right decision. Here are my tips to do India right with a child in tow!

Tip 1

Choose the right partner to handle your booking. VIP services, such as having a priority greeter at the airport upon arrival at 3am and swiftly passing through customs, is priceless. Being able to bypass enormous lines, getting your luggage transported ahead of time to your next hotel destination, and having a top-quality vehicle to ride in for the very long drives make all the difference. 26 I parentguide News I December 2014

IR 12/14

parentguidenews.com

Tip 2

When it comes to hotels, go luxe or go home.

Hotels in India can vary drastically between 4 and 5 stars with regard to services and atmosphere, but the upside is that 5-star hotels can be surprisingly affordable. They often have all of the amenities you need to travel comfortably with children. My picks in Delhi are the Aman and the Leela Palace. Check out Aman for it’s understated “wow factor.” It’s best feature? A private patio pool for endless fun for jet-lagged children day and night. The Leela staff couldn’t be more welcoming, even taking great care to drop off a welcome basket filled with refreshing snacks and magazines for families. The same rule goes for trains, as rail travel is a large part of an Indian adventure. Travel only in the first class sections, which are entirely inexpensive and replete with friendly vendors passing through the cars constantly selling snacks, tea, and just about everything else you can think of. Standard trains here are not lavish, but seats are slightly bigger than the average airline economy seat with plenty of legroom, power outlets all over the walls, and decent storage space for a small bag.

Tip 3

Get out and explore out of your comfort zone. While Delhi has no shortage of interesting historical sights and a Taj Mahal visit is an absolute must, I find the most intriguing areas for children are found off the beaten path. My family was treated to an authentic puppet show at a fair one day, and the next one, we wondrously observed people at peaceful prayer, offering blessings to the skies. Another day, we met the top “color blocking” artisan in the modest factory he’s used for decades. We also reveled in the simple but new-to-us sensation of dizzying rickshaw rides. A tiger safari is also quite phenomenal at Ranthambhore National Park. The Aman-i-Khas resort is the perfect option for families wanting to explore this nearby wildlife sanctuary. The hotel staff welcomes visitors with refreshing drinks and cold towels. You’ll stay in a luxury tent complete with 5-star hotel amenities and enjoy food prepared by chefs who can please parental palettes while satisfying children’s preferences for treats like hot chocolate and pizza. The safari drives can be lengthy, but they’re so worth it. If you do happen to capture a glimpse of the elusive tigers, you’ve got bragging rights for life. India is amazing. Don’t try to figure it out all at once. Just go with the flow with eyes and mind wide open, and you’ll be treated to one unforgettable adventure. For the Woman behind the Mom

Those Pesky Kids

by Dr. Sherrie Campbell

5 ways to cope when you love your BFF but not her brood. Whether or not we can readily admit it, sometimes we find that the friends we love have kids we don’t like. Yes, this statement may be shocking to read in black and white. But even if you adore children, they’re still people; and well, you don’t always get along with everyone you meet in life! In reality, it all comes down to parenting. Children are a reflection of the parenting, time, love, and attention they receive at home. You can’t control these factors, which means you might end up in a situation that entails awkward, stressful social gatherings. No doubt, loving your BFF but disliking her children puts a strain on your friendship. To deal with this unpleasant scenario, consider the following suggestions. 1. Don’t spend time with your friend if her kids are around.

The easiest and most obvious solution is to avoid being around your friend if her children are present. Instead, invite your bestie to a girls’ lunch, ladies’ night, an adults-only movie, a fitness or art class, etc. This way, you get the benefit of time spent together sans kids.

2. Avoid playdates between your children and your friend’s family.

The already-stressful situation is even more challenging if you and your BFF have children of similar ages. Your kids may have the same feelings as you do about these particular peers and would also prefer to spend time apart from them. It’s your responsibility to take care of your children in this situation while maintaining your friendship. If a playdate is proposed, distract your friend with trying to plan adult time instead. 32 I parentguide News I December 2014

IR 12/14

parentguidenews.com

3. Discuss parenting techniques that have worked with your kids.

This could be a tricky talk to navigate. Being a parent is the toughest job out there, and some people may be sensitive when it comes to suggestions about how to do it. Even so, it could be worth attempting to chat with your friend about parenting skills that have been lifesavers for you. Usually moms and dads are aware on some level that their kids are acting out or being annoying. Casually bringing up some preferred parenting methods could be helpful to your friend, who just may not be a natural when it comes to child rearing — especially if this her first time doing it.

4. Put distance in the friendship.

When a person clearly is not teaching her children to be respectful, polite, and decent human beings, it can change the feelings you have for your friend. If it becomes too stressful to be around this friend’s children, and you no longer see her the way you once did before she had them, you may want to back away from the friendship for a while or altogether.

5. Be honest with your friend.

If things are tense and the tactics mentioned are not working, gently express your thoughts and emotions to your friend. Make sure

you don’t refer to her or her children in purposefully hurtful ways, but rather use simple and truthful statements about your feelings. For example, you could say, “I love our adult time together and want to continue to nurture that. However, I have a hard time being around your children (as do my kids) as I don’t feel they have yet learned to respect other people’s boundaries, which I’m sure you are working on.” In this way, you are clearly stating your needs and feelings while broaching the issue at hand. The apple usually doesn’t fall from the tree. Parents whose children are not disciplined tend to come from parents who have a hard time disciplining themselves. Give your friend the benefit of the doubt, though, and see if there are any tips you can try that could help. If she still seems oblivious, then limit your time with your friend to adults-only time or reevaluate the relationship.
